Aida Algarin, a native Rhode Islander, and her team at Central Carolina Doulas have become a key part in making the birth and postpartum experience a positive one for families here in Fayetteville.

Aida’s inspiration emanates from her faith and an unyielding passion for serving others instilling confidence, and hope in those who doubt themselves. Aida gives back to her community by volunteering, particularly in areas related to childhood safety and perinatal mental health. Her business motto, “Confidence is Key,” mirrors her commitment to empowering others. In her leisure time, she enjoys the company of her children and immerses herself in audiobooks. When it comes to a beloved Fayetteville landmark, Lafayette/Linear Park holds a special place in her heart. Moreover, Aida remains deeply involved with organizations such as Safe Kids of Cumberland County, Partnership for Children of Cumberland County, Postpartum Support International, and The Carrying on Project of Fort Liberty, demonstrating her steadfast dedication to community involvement and support.

Jay and JJ Dowdy are second and thirdgeneration real estate professionals, carrying on the legacy of Jay’s father, Butch Dowdy, who founded their company in 1984. This father and son team specializes in helping clients with real estate transactions, and what sets them apart is their commitment to treating clients like family, prioritizing relationships over transactions.

JJ takes immense pride in his father’s ability to manage a successful real estate business while raising a family with four children, while JJ and his siblings are what makes Jay beam with pride. JJ’s biggest life lesson is to treat everyone with respect, regardless of their background. His motivation comes from helping clients achieve their homeownership dreams.

JJ’s personal motto is “Work hard, play harder,” while Jay’s is “JUST DO IT.” They both enjoy unwinding through activities like boating, skiing, and golfing before grabbing dinner at their favorite local spot, Antonella’s.

Jay served as the President of the Local Board of Realtors in 2009 and 2017 and has received numerous accolades including Realtor of the Year in 2010, and consistently ranks among the top 1% of real estate brokers in the nation, earning him the 10 years Legend Award. He’s most proud of being featured on the 2023 America’s Best list.

One of Jay’s life lessons is to “Never say ‘never’,” and he advises young people to pursue their passions wholeheartedly. They are both is actively involved with Man22 Suicide Awareness, showing their commitment to making a positive impact in the community.

N. Blair Fisher

Bringing three decades of experience in education is N. Blair Fisher, the newly appointed Head of School of Fayetteville Academy.

Blair is deeply rooted in the rich history of Fayetteville, his family’s lineage stretching back over 150 years, boasting prominent figures such as a newspaper publisher, high-ranking Army officers, and even Mayor George Herndon. Blair’s first job was on the family farm, instilling a strong work ethic from an early age. As an “army brat,” he carried this dedication through his own years of Army service.

Blair’s educational journey took him through institutions like William and Mary, George Mason University, and Kennesaw State University, where he earned multiple degrees. He shares his life with his wife Jen, who has also made significant contributions to the field of education, and their sons Zach and Kyle, alongside a menagerie of three dogs and two cats. Despite his professional accomplishments, Blair’s proudest achievements revolve around being a devoted husband and father.

Blair was inspired by the profound influence his own teachers had on him to pursue a career in education. His mission is to “pay it forward” by positively impacting the lives of young people, just as his teachers had done for him.

Fayetteville Academy, a renowned PreK-12th grade institution, stands as one of the Southeast’s top-ranked independent schools, known for its signature STEAM program, emphasis on

communication skills, a unique partnership with the UNC university system, and outstanding athletic and arts programs. Under Blair’s leadership, the school is poised for exciting growth, with new programs, partnerships, and opportunities on the horizon.

His personal motto, “Don’t Be; Become,” reflects his commitment to continuous self-improvement. He imparts valuable lessons to his students, emphasizing the importance of always seeking selfimprovement, doing the right thing, and never settling for limited potential.

In his leisure time, Blair enjoys exercise, gardening, reading, and exploring new destinations. Upon his return to Fayetteville, he greatly enjoyed showing his family iconic landmarks like The Cameo, the Tallywood sign, and the Eiffel Tower at Bordeaux. Blair is thrilled to witness the city’s growth and transformation, particularly the revitalization of downtown Fayetteville.

Chris Fletcher from Fayetteville, North Carolina, began as a janitor at Manna, a pivotal starting point not only for his career, but also in his life.

Chris’s passion lies in his role as a dedicated leader at Manna, where the mission is clear: to be the best church for its city. He attributes this calling to a divine intervention that redirected his life from pursuing a law degree in his early 20s.

Family is the cornerstone of Chris’s life, with his beloved wife, Rachel, and their four children serving as his pride and joy. He values his faith, marriage, and parenthood above all else.

Guided by his mother’s advice — “Don’t marry someone you can live with, but someone you cannot live WITHOUT,” — Chris has built his life around this principle.

What truly motivates him is the profound sacrifice of Jesus, driving his dedication to his faith and his community. He lives by the mantra, “The truth shall set you free.”

In moments of relaxation, Chris finds solace in sports, date nights dining at Sakura with his wife, and the soothing strains of music.

Fayetteville holds a special place in Chris’s heart, with the Ghost Tower being a cherished landmarkthe very site where he proposed to his wife.

In addition to his work at Manna, Chris is actively involved with Fayetteville Soccer Club, reflecting his commitment to making a positive impact in our community.

Portia Grady, the visionary owner and executive chef behind The Friend’s Table, is a proud North Carolinian with deep roots in the state. Born in Wilmington and raised in Charlotte, she embodies the warmth and hospitality synonymous with Southern culture.

The Friend’s Table, Portia’s innovative culinary venture, redefines the brunch experience by blending trendy dishes with Southern comfort food, creative cocktails, and the vibrant energy of a live DJ. Her culinary passion shines through signature dishes like shrimp and grits, which have become hallmarks of her restaurant.

Her commitment to excellence is reflected in the numerous accolades she has earned, including the Open Table 2023 Restaurant Award. A proud alumna of UNC Pembroke, where she earned a B.S. in Elementary Education, Portia furthered her education with an MBA from UNC. Now, as a Doctoral Candidate with expected completion in 2026, she continues to expand her knowledge and influence, recently being accepted into the prestigious Yale School of Management Women’s Leadership Program.

Since 2018, Portia has independently employed and trained over 60 local talents, offering them a platform to build their careers. Recently, she has created fulltime salaried positions for some of her restaurant crew members, reflecting her commitment to providing stable, rewarding opportunities. Her leadership extends beyond the kitchen, as she actively engages in her community by adopting 12 local teachers to supply their classrooms with materials for the school year, ensuring they have the resources needed to succeed.

Her entrepreneurial spirit has also led her to expand The Friend’s Table’s catering services to professional athletic teams and local businesses, further solidifying her impact in the culinary world. She draws inspiration from the people around her—those she admires, collaborates with, and those who look up to her as a mentor. Her journey is one of continuous growth, always seeking to reach new heights and make a positive impact.

Steve & Debbie Milburn

Steve and Debbie Milburn, the Faces of The UPS Store, are a remarkable couple whose dedication to service has left an indelible mark on both their military careers and their community. With a combined service record of 48 years as retired Army Lieutenant Colonels, they embody the values of leadership, commitment, and selflessness.

Their journey began when they met at Fort Dix, NJ. They were married in 1980 and have two children, Katherine and Patrick, whom they raised with the same principles that guided their careers.

Steve’s path led him to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY, where he honed his leadership skills and developed a deep sense of duty. After retiring from the Army in 1996, he and Debbie decided to make Fayetteville their permanent home, bringing their wealth of experience and dedication to the local community.

Together, they established a thriving business with three UPS stores, serving Fayetteville for over 27 years. Their three locations and experienced staff offer a wide range of services, from shipping and mailing to mailbox rentals, notary services, engraving, and more. They even have a state-of-the-art print and sign shop capable of producing everything from business cards to vehicle wraps on various materials and sizes.

What truly sets Steve and Debbie apart though, is their unwavering commitment to community service. Their dedication has garnered recognition, including the prestigious 2021 CityView Power of Giving: Community Impact Award. Steve’s community involvement extends far beyond their business; he has held leadership positions in numerous organizations, contributing his time and expertise to causes close to his heart.

In addition to their financial contributions, Steve and Debbie generously provide print products from their UPS stores to support local non-profits. Their unwavering commitment to giving back demonstrates their passion for making Fayetteville a better place for all. STEVE MILBURN 1954-2023

It is with great respect and admiration that we remember the life and legacy of Steve Milburn. Steve's commitment to our nation and community was nothing short of remarkable. As a graduate of The United States Military Academy at West Point, he dedicated two decades of his life to active duty service, with much of that time spent at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Upon retiring in 1996, Steve and his wife, Debbie, chose Fayetteville as their permanent home. Steve's service to the community was extensive and impactful. He served as the Board President for The CARE Clinic, Finance Council Chairman of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, and as the Board President of the Armed Services YMCA of Fort Liberty. His involvement also extended to the Exchange Club of Greater Fayetteville, where he held the position of President.

Steve was a devoted member of the Fayetteville Planning Commission, a Board Director for CEED, and contributed his time and expertise to the Salvation Army Board of Directors and the Fayetteville Airport Commission. His dedication extended beyond official roles, as he was a loyal Kiwanian for over 27 years. Within the Carolina’s Kiwanis District, he earned the titles of Distinguished Club President and Outstanding Lieutenant Governor, and his service was recognized with the Hixon and Zeller Fellow awards.

Steve's generosity knew no bounds. He consistently supported nonprofits both financially and through the provision of print products from his multiple UPS Stores. In 2021, his selfless service and unwavering dedication to the Fayetteville community were honored with the CityView Power of Giving: Community Impact Award.

Steve Milburn's legacy of service and his impact on the Fayetteville community will be remembered and cherished for generations to come. His selflessness and commitment serve as an inspiration to us all. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this time of remembrance.

THE FACES OF TEAM GROOVER AT RE/MAX CHOICE

Cody, Shari & Shawn Groover

Shawn, Shari and Cody Groover are the dynamic team behind Team Groover RE/MAX choice. Shawn and Shari hail from Orlando, Florida, while Cody has always called Fort Bragg home.

Shawn’s first job had him selling newspaper subscriptions door to door at the tender age of 13, while Shari worked at the Florida Mall. Their combined expertise led them to the world of real estate, where they offer full-service solutions for buyers and sellers.

Their passion for providing top-notch service sets Team Groover apart. Shawn’s distinguished membership in the Psychological Operations Regiment adds to their unique profile.

They are most proud of Shawn’s military service, much of which was spent right here at Fort Liberty. Life lessons? “You can achieve anything with hard work” and “Stay focused.” Their best advice comes from Shawn’s First SGM: “You have to work hard to achieve your goals.”

For young people starting out, they emphasize having a plan and refining it continuously. What motivates them? The joy of handing over new home keys, especially to first-time buyers.

In their downtime, Shawn enjoys golf, and Shari finds solace in gardening. Their favorite local spots include the Downtown Market of Fayetteville and Luigi’s restaurant. They also give back to the community by supporting local non-profits, including FAPS, and Shawn’s 7-year involvement with the Fayetteville Police Foundation. They’re also animal lovers, caring for three dogs, three cats, four parrots, and even a duck named Dave, who they recently discovered is actually a “Diane”!

Their personal mottos? “Life is a team sport” and “Always do the right thing.” Whether it’s serving their clients or their community, Team Groover embodies these principles.

Audrey Hasslocher, originally from San Antonio, Texas, has an inspiring journey that led her to the world of digital marketing and public relations. Having overcome a challenging upbringing as a foster child and the constant changes that come with life as a military spouse, she has managed to build a loving family, pursue education, and make a positive impact through her business.

Her business, Freebird Communications, is a digital marketing and public relations agency dedicated to enhancing brand visibility and online marketing for businesses. Audrey and her team offer a diverse range of services, from social media management and web design to SEO, public relations, and community engagement, helping businesses generate leads and expand their digital presence. What distinguishes Audrey and her company is her creative flair and design expertise. Every marketing campaign she spearheads is marked by innovative thinking, stunning graphics, and a keen understanding of the brand’s target audience.

Audrey’s passion for people led her into this career, particularly the community aspect of marketing and public relations. Building connections, engaging with customers, and fostering loyalty between businesses and their consumers are her driving forces.

One of the most significant life lessons she imparts is the belief that if something is meant for you, it won’t pass you by. Audrey advises young individuals starting out to take the first step, conquer fear, build a supportive network, and embrace evolution and growth in their endeavors.

The horizon holds exciting prospects for Audrey and Freebird Communications, with her primary business continually motivating her. She has also initiated a passion project called The Blossom Tribe, fostering a space for creatives and entrepreneurs to find community and support for their creative pursuits.

For relaxation, Audrey enjoys spending quality time with her three vibrant daughters, engaging in outdoor activities such as pool visits, trips to the coast, and exploring the city together. She’s a foodie with a long list of favorites, including Blue Moon Cafe, Ichi-Kaku Ramen, and Tacos Way NC food truck among her favorite Fayetteville spots.

CHEF YOHEI KAMIYA

A native of Nagoya, Japan, is Chef Yohei the owner and executive chef of Ichi Kaku Ramen, the restaurant Fayetteville Foodies cannot stop raving about! From a young age, Yohei has found inspiration in Iron Chef Morimoto, a Japanese chef recognized by Americans despite language barriers. His approach to entertaining while cooking has shaped Chef Yohei’s approach to bringing delicious food and cherished traditions from his native Japan right here to Fayetteville.

After completing his education at AICHI GakuInn University in Nagoya. Yohei moved to the United States to pursue his dream of opening a restaurant of his very own. Motivated by the sight of customers enjoying traditional Japanese cuisine at his restaurant, he strives to create memorable experiences.

His family and their unwavering support were essential to his 25-year journey to make his dream a reality. He shares his life with his wife Tara, their three children, and a Labrador.

The best advice he ever received came from his late mother, who encouraged him to believe in himself and act courageously. For young people starting out, Yohei emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, hard work, and meaningful face-to-face interactions.

Yohei leads by example, exuding positivity and fun, and fostering a spirit of mutual support within his team. His favorite words to live by are a reminder that the pursuit of goals is often more rewarding than the goals themselves.

When he isn’t in the kitchen, Yohei delves into the world of cuisine through videos, always eager to learn about new culinary experiences. He actively supports local businesses like Boudoir Luxury Boutique & Lounge and HanKate Salon. He also loves getting a bite and a brew at District House of Taps, while The Market House stands as his favorite Fayetteville landmark.

Beyond his restaurant, Yohei is involved with nonprofits such as Holy Trinity, Fizzy Friendz, and The Stack Project, further demonstrating his commitment to giving back to the community that has embraced and supported his culinary journey.

Living in the Fort Liberty community since 2006, Jamie recognized that military spouses with professional degrees can struggle with employment because of the demands of moving, state licensing, deployment and family care. Monica T. Leach

Dr. Monica Terrell Leach, a native of Slidell, Louisiana, is making a big impact as the Provost for Fayetteville State University. She proudly states, “FSU is more than an institution; we’re a community that believes in the power of potential. Our commitment to affordability, flexibility, and unwavering support sets us apart.”

While earning her bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University, she received divine mentorship from the Chancellor who guided her to pursue higher education as a career. She subsequently worked as an Events Coordinator at LSU’s Continuing Education Center to gain practical experience in the field. Her passion and ability to make a difference reflect her outstanding involvement in the community. She gives her time, talents, and treasures as a dedicated member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.; AMI Kids NC Inc., and AsOne Fellowship. Dr. Terrell Leach’s dedication to education led her to be named the Woman of the Year in Education in 2017 and the NC State 40 for 40 in 2019.

In her spare time, Dr. Terrell Leach enjoys spending quality time with extended family, sorority sisters, her husband, Dr. James B. Leach, and her son, Jailen. Her treasured activities include shopping, cheering on their favorite sports teams on TV and traveling to see them live.

She draws inspiration from remarkable figures like Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, Shirley Chisolm, and Ruby Bridges. Her educational journey includes earning a Master of Education (M.Ed.) and an Ed.D. from North Carolina State University, further enhancing her expertise and commitment to fostering learning and growth. Dr. Terrell Leach’s motto is, “Education is the great equalizer. Always strive for greatness.” FSU’s leadership is overjoyed to have such a positive role model who gives tirelessly to the students at Fayetteville State University and the Fayetteville Community.

John Rose

John Rose has been a native of Fayetteville since he was 3 years old. His strong work ethic stems from working at his family’s furniture store in Spring Lake, throughout his childhood. While attending the Fayetteville Academy, he also worked at Video Game Traders, a game store located in the U.S. Flea Mall on McPherson Church Road. John learned how to teach customers how to play the games — and the benefits of utilizing cheat codes for better performance. His other tasks included ordering inventory and gaining additional experience in customer service by processing transactions. He never let his age deter him from his goals.

In 2014, John branched out on his own to sell furniture at a booth at the Bragg Blvd Flea Market. Since then, he opened a 33,000-square-foot premier retail store, located on Murchison Road, and a second location on Reilly Road. He decided to name his store J.R. Furniture because he, his wife, and their three children’s initials are all “J.R.” and they are the ones who motivate him. The store sells name-brand living room, dining room, and bedroom sets. They also offer accent furniture, mattresses, and more at discount prices.

In October 2021, John expanded beyond the furniture business. He purchased all the additional buildings in the Murchison Marketplace, apart from the old Walmart building, and is heavily involved in the revitalization of the Murchison Road corridor. On Fridays and Saturdays, the shopping center hosts the Murchison Road Food Truck Park and brings many new people to the area.

In John’s spare time, he enjoys spending quality time with his family. Fishing and playing golf at King’s Grant Golf & Country Club are some of his favorite pastimes. The principles of hard work, dedication, and stellar customer service inspired team members to strive for excellence — and to work to consistently exceed the expectations of their customers.
