UNIQUE DAF XD ELECTRIC FINDS DUTCH APPLICATION FROM RACETRACK INSPIRATION TO MILK COLLECTION
V
an Der Mierden Transport of the Netherlands has taken delivery of a unique ‘DAF XD Electric’. The one-off vehicle will be used for transporting dairy. The fully electric tractor unit is inspired by the iconic DAF racing truck from 1996. The sensationallooking vehicle combines a striking design with the latest zero-emission technology. The truck will be deployed by Van Der Mierden Transport for milk collection transport, an application that is perfectly suited to the many possibilities offered by an electric truck. The DAF Electric features the appearance of the DAF Race Truck from the 1990s. The vehicle is based on a DAF XD 350 FT 4x2 tractor unit, the ‘International Truck of the Year 2026’. The truck is visually distinguished by a unique colour scheme and striping that refer to the famous DAF race truck. The special XD Electric is equipped with a 350 kW (480 hp) driveline powered by a 525 kWh battery pack, enabling a range of

more than 500 kilometres on a single charge, depending on the application. Van Der Mierden operates several special vehicles within its fleet. When the company learned about this eye-catching truck through DAF dealer Truckland, its interest was immediately sparked. “With this DAF, we demonstrate that sustainability, operational practicality and a distinctive design go hand in hand,” said Julian van der Mierden, managing director of Van Der Mierden Transport. “We deliberately chose an innovative and sustainable electric solution that can be deployed directly in day-to-day operations. Like our customers, we care about nature and the future of the next generations.” Van Der Mierden Transport has been in business for more than 60 years and is a true family-owned company. The business started with a horse and cart, collecting milk churns from local farms. Today, its state-of-the-art fleet consists almost entirely of DAF trucks. ●

BYD TAKES THE COVERS OFF NEW ELECTRIC HEAVY TRUCK ETT 44 COMBINES HIGH PERFORMANCE, ADVANCED BATTERY TECHNOLOGY AND DRIVER-FOCUSED ERGONOMICS
B
YD Commercial Vehicles has revealed its most advanced European product line-up to date, showcasing a complete range of electric transport solutions from urban distribution and municipal applications to regional and longhaul logistics. Built on BYD’s vertically integrated approach, the portfolio combines proprietary vehicle technologies, Blade Battery innovation, ultra-fast megawatt charging solutions, energy storage systems, intelligent energy management and financial services into a single ecosystem designed to simplify fleet electrification and maximise operational uptime. Unlike traditional vehicle manufacturers, BYD delivers a fully integrated mobility and energy solution, acting as a true one-stop-shop partner capable of supporting customers throughout their transition to zero-emission transport At the heart of BYD’s approach is the belief that the future of transport will not be defined by the vehicle alone, but by the seamless integration of vehicle, energy, charging infrastructure and intelligent fleet operation. Through its proprietary Total Cost of Mobility (TCM) philosophy, BYD helps operators optimise every element of their business, from vehicle efficiency and charging

performance to energy procurement, infrastructure utilisation and lifecycle management. This integrated vision enables fleet operators to reduce operational complexity, improve uptime and accelerate the path toward profitable electrification. Stella Li, executive vicepresident of BYD, said: “We have already put FLASH Charging into practice in passenger vehicles. Today, we are bringing this technology to commercial vehicles, starting with our trucks. With 1.5 Megawatts of charging power, it can charge from 20% to 80% in about 20 minutes – delivering up to 248 miles of range. Less time charging. More time on the road. “Greater efficiency for every vehicle. From batteries and solar power to energy storage, FLASH Charging and commercial vehicles. We provide a onestop Solution for Sustainable commercial transport. One company. One ecosystem. One total energy solution.” Leading the display is the new BYD ETT 44, the company’s flagship heavy-duty electric tractor and the most powerful expression of BYD’s vision for the future of long-haul transport. Designed from the ground up as a native electric platform, the ETT 44 combines high
performance, ultra-fast charging capability, advanced battery technology and driver-focused ergonomics within a purposebuilt architecture engineered to maximise productivity. However, the ETT 44 represents more than a technological achievement. As the flagship model of the BYD truck range, it embodies a new design direction for commercial vehicles, demonstrating how functionality, innovation and emotional appeal can coexist within a modern heavy-duty truck. The ETT 44’s Blade Battery is backed by a 10-year /1.2-million-kilometre warranty as standard – well beyond the 2–3-year base-vehicle warranties and 6-8 year battery warranties typically offered across the European market, where extended
coverage is usually a paid option. Combined with BYD’s Total Cost of Mobility (TCM) approach, which manages vehicle, energy consumption, electricity pricing, charging infrastructure, operations and financing as a single, optimised system, the ETT 44 is designed to give fleet operators confidence across the vehicle’s entire lifecycle. The vehicle introduces a bold and confident design language that reflects the same attributes found in BYD’s technology strategy: innovation, integration, efficiency and forward-thinking ambition. ● Below: BYD ETT 44 is the company’s flagship heavy-duty electric tractor and the most powerful expression of BYD’s vision for the future of longhaul transport

NEW TACHOGRAPH LATEST TECHNOLOGY AND DRIVER HOURS CAUSES HEADACHES MODULE LAUNCHED OVER REPAIR COSTS
E-TRAINING WORLD OFFERS EDUCATION FOR NEW HGV DRIVERS
E
-Training World has launched a new driver training module providing essential education on the effective use of tachographs and the safe implementation of driver hours regulations. The training is designed for new HGV Drivers, drivers returning to the industry and as a refresher for existing drivers to understand how to use tachographs correctly to ensure safety and compliance.
FLEET OPERATORS MUST ENSURE THAT DRIVERS ARE TRAINED IN TACHOGRAPH USE The module is also relevant to van drivers operating in the EU, following the recent regulation change. From 1 July 2026, vans and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of 2.5 to 3.5 tonnes that are used for international commercial freight transport or cabotage must be

fitted with a second-generation smart tachograph (known as Smart Tachograph 2 or G2V2). Tachograph requirements previously applied only to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. However, the threshold has now been reduced to 2.5 tonnes and applies to UK drivers even if the vehicle crosses the EU border just once. The drivers of these vans are also now subject to the same driving time and rest period rules that currently apply to HGV drivers under EU Regulation 561/2006. “Fleet operators must ensure that drivers are trained in tachograph use and understand driving and rest time rules, as well as ensure tachographs are installed and functioning correctly,” said Graham Hurdle, managing director of E-Training World. “Tachographs create a complete picture of the driver’s day, ensuring accuracy, compliance and safety on every journey. They protect drivers, promote responsible, compliant transport and are an essential part of secure, legal fleet management.” ◼
EMISSIONS RELATED SYSTEMS PROVE THE BIGGEST MAINTENANCE CHALLENGES Increasingly sophisticated emissions systems, electronics and powertrain components are changing the profile of heavy commercial vehicle repairs, according to new analysis of the past five years by Warranty Solutions Group (WSG). According to WSG’s claims intelligence, NOx sensors account for 14.1% of all authorised HGV warranty claims, making them by far the most common repair across the UK truck parc. Turbochargers account for 4.8% of claims, followed by engine ECUs (4.2%), AdBlue pumps (3%) and water pumps (2.1%). Camshafts, EGR valves, alternators, brake chambers, radiators, brake APM units, starter motors, ABS wheel speed sensors and air compressors also feature prominently. This, says WSG, demonstrates the wide range of mechanical, electronic and emissions-related systems now requiring specialist diagnosis and repair. Perhaps most significantly,
emissions-related technology now represents one of the biggest maintenance challenges facing truck operators. NOx sensors, AdBlue pumps and EGR valves all feature within the most common warranty repairs, highlighting how modern Euro VI vehicles have become increasingly reliant on sophisticated emissions-control systems. Dennis Brett, claims director
FAULTS THAT OCCUR REPEATEDLY ACROSS THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES THAT HAVE THE GREATEST IMPACT
at Warranty Solutions Group, said: “One of the biggest misconceptions is that the highest repair bill represents the biggest reliability issue. In reality, it’s often the faults that occur repeatedly across thousands of vehicles that have the greatest commercial impact." ◼

IAA 2026: THE TRUCK INDUSTRY FACES REALITY
IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026 WAS SUPPOSED TO DEMONSTRATE HOW QUICKLY THE TRUCK INDUSTRY IS MOVING TOWARDS ZERO EMISSIONS. INSTEAD, THE OVERRIDING MESSAGE FROM HANNOVER WAS RATHER MORE COMPLICATED: THE TECHNOLOGY IS ARRIVING, BUT THE MARKET, INFRASTRUCTURE AND ECONOMICS ARE STRUGGLING TO KEEP PACE.
W
alking around the vast Hannover exhibition halls, there was certainly no shortage of new technology. Battery-electric trucks are becoming increasingly capable, ranges are growing and megawatt charging is moving from presentation slides towards reality. But diesel was far from dead, hydrogen remained firmly on the agenda and manufacturers appeared
14 | O C T O B E R 2 0 2 6
increasingly determined to talk about the practicalities of running trucks rather than simply announcing ambitious environmental targets. That was perhaps the defining feature of IAA 2026. This felt less like a technology demonstration and more like the point at which Europe’s truck manufacturers started asking how the transition is actually going to work.
MAN goes further MAN used Hannover to unveil the latest generation of its eTGX, with revised aerodynamics, improved recuperation and a new battery generation offering around ten per cent more usable energy. The headline figure was impressive: up to 720km of range for the new 6x2 tractor equipped with seven batteries and 644kWh
FE ATURE
Dynamic, an extensive evolution of its R- and S-series rather than a completely new truck. Aerodynamics have been tackled through redesigned A-pillars, digital rear-view mirrors, extended side skirts, revised door handles, wheel covers and changes to the front of the cab. Scania says the combined improvements can reduce overall energy consumption by around two per cent. Inside, there are revised materials, seats and lighting, together with an optional 800mm reclining bed. It is typical Scania: evolution rather than revolution, concentrating on the details that drivers and operators actually notice. Scania also demonstrated how quickly electric capability is developing. Its latest capacity. A 4x2 tractor can achieve up to 660km. Efficiency has improved by up to three per cent and the truck is capable of MCS charging at up to 750kW. Perhaps more significant was the breadth of MAN’s electric offering. The eTGL, eTGM, eTGS and eTGX now give the manufacturer an electric range stretching from 12 to 50 tonnes. MAN hasn’t abandoned combustion either. A new 598hp engine tops the conventional range, while a formidable 60-tonne TGS 8x4 aimed at mining applications provided a reminder that there remain plenty of jobs for which batteries are not yet the obvious answer. long-haul electric configuration offers up to 720km range, backed by increased battery capacity and MCS charging. DAF expands the New Generation family DAF arrived with one of the widest collections of practical product developments at the show. Most significant were the XG and XG+ Electric, extending DAF’s electric range beyond the XD and XF. Depending on configuration, DAF quotes more than 550km from a charge, while new battery positioning options can substantially improve axle loading and payload. The electric range has also expanded into 6x2, 6x4 and 8x4 configurations, including construction applications and dedicated BDF chassis. There was plenty happening on the diesel side too. New configurations include an ex-factory five-axle 10x4 and particularly interesting ultralow chassis for car transporters, available across XD, XF, XG and XG+. DAF also introduced TruckIQ services including remote software updates, PreDiagnostics and Smart Service Alerts, reflecting another noticeable IAA trend: uptime and connectivity are becoming almost as important as the truck itself. Mercedes-Benz backs several horses If one manufacturer illustrated the industry’s reluctance to put everything behind a single technology, it was Mercedes-Benz Trucks. The eActros Lowliner made its public debut, extending the eActros concept 16 | O C T O B E R 2 0 2 6

into high-volume transport, while the established eActros 600 remained central to Mercedes’ electric long-haul strategy. Alongside it was something altogether different: the NextGenH2 Truck. Using liquid hydrogen and the cellcentric BZA150 fuel-cell system, Mercedes says the truck can cover well over 1,000km between refuelling stops. Around 100 vehicles are planned for the small-series programme, with the first entering customer operation from the end of 2026. And then there was diesel. Mercedes unveiled its new Powerliner powertrain generation, designed around higher power and torque and a downspeeding philosophy intended to improve fuel efficiency. Hannover therefore presented three parallel MercedesBenz strategies: battery, hydrogen and increasingly efficient combustion. That probably tells us more about the real direction of the market than any prediction of the death of diesel. Volvo pushes electric beyond 700km Volvo’s stand demonstrated just how quickly the limitations traditionally associated with electric trucks are being eroded. Series production has now started on its new heavy electric generation, including the FH Aero Electric with extended range, capable of up to 700km on one charge. But the attention-grabber was an electric 18 | O C T O B E R 2 0 2 6
FH developed for combinations operating at up to 80 tonnes GCW. At 76 tonnes Volvo quotes up to 420km range, while at 64 tonnes the figure increases to around 450km. MCS charging at 680kW can take the battery from 20 to 80 per cent in approximately 36 minutes. Volvo also continues to invest heavily in combustion. Its new 13-litre engine architecture supports diesel and gas, including renewable fuels, with hydrogen combustion planned as a future development. Again, the message was technology neutrality rather than one solution for everything. Renault Trucks returns Renault Trucks made a significant return to IAA with both electric and diesel developments. The headline electric truck was the E-Tech T 780, offering up to 660km range. Its e-axle frees chassis space for additional high-energy-density NCA batteries while helping deliver payload of up to 27.4 tonnes. Alongside it was the 2027 T High with Renault’s new DE13 R diesel engine, available with up to 540hp and 2,800Nm. Renault claims fuel consumption and CO₂ improvements of up to four per cent compared with the previous generation. A changing world order There was another unavoidable element to Hannover: China. The presence of manufacturers from China and other
emerging markets continues to grow, while companies such as SuperPanther are no longer simply displaying concepts. Its eTopas 600, for example, is moving into European series production. That increased competition matters. European manufacturers are simultaneously being asked to invest billions in new powertrains, meet demanding CO₂ legislation and defend their home markets against increasingly credible overseas competitors. And that explains the mood of IAA 2026. The technology on display was arguably more impressive than at any previous Hannover show. Electric trucks capable of 600–700km are moving towards normality, megawatt charging is becoming tangible and manufacturers have stopped treating zero-emission trucks as experimental side projects. But there was noticeably less triumphalism. Operators ultimately buy trucks to make money. Range matters, but so do payload, residual value, charging availability, energy prices, finance, uptime and total cost of ownership. IAA Transportation 2026 demonstrated that Europe’s truck manufacturers can build the vehicles. The much bigger question now is whether Europe can create the conditions in which operators can afford to run them. ●

he developments were presented at the recent IAA Transportation Show in Hanover, with DAF adding electric versions of its XG and XG+ trucks, extending its zero-emission range into longhaul applications. The new models share their electric driveline and lithium iron phosphate battery technology with the XD and XF Electric. DAF says its electric trucks can now cover more than 340 miles on one charge, depending on configuration and use. The batteries are covered by an eight-year warranty and can be charged to 100% daily without affecting their durability, according to the manufacturer. New electric configurations include 6x2 tractors with a steered pusher or trailing axle for heavy distribution work, alongside 6x2 rigids for tipper and demountable body 20 | O C T O B E R 2 0 2 6
applications. DAF has also introduced 6x4 and 8x4 electric rigids with driven tandem axles for construction fleets. A revised battery layout removes the pack from beneath the cab and positions up to four packs further back. DAF says this reduces the front axle load by around 700kg and could increase available payload by up to 2.5 tonnes. DAF also says some electric models can carry up to 500kg more than equivalent diesel trucks when additional weight allowances for zero-emission vehicles are taken into account. DAF is also introducing a package of digital fleet support services under its TruckIQ banner using the PACCAR Connect platform. Remote software updates will allow drivers to install vehicle updates without visiting a workshop.

A PreDiagnostics service will provide dealers with information about required work before the truck arrives, allowing technicians and replacement parts to be prepared in advance. Smart Service Alerts will use vehicle data to identify potential faults before they result in an unplanned stoppage. DAF has also introduced onboard systems that monitor vehicle weight and real-world fuel consumption, including instantaneous and lifetime totals. A new drowsiness and distraction system will warn drivers if they look away from the road for more than six seconds. DAF has also expanded its diesel XD, XF, XG and XG+ ranges with additional axle configurations. These include a five-axle 10x4 rigid for heavy construction work, with a technical gross vehicle weight of up to 54 tonnes. New car transporter chassis have also been introduced in 4x2 and 6x2 formats. Their chassis height has been reduced to 83cm to
maximise loading space within the fourmetre legal vehicle height. The XD can be specified with a lower or sloping cab roof, allowing a vehicle to be carried above the cab. Single-driver XF, XG and XG+ models also gain an optional rear storage system, while the XG and XG+ can be ordered with a 90cmwide bed. “DAF is proudly presenting its full range of first class diesel and electric truck program at IAA Transportation 2026”, stated Jim Walenczak, DAF Trucks’ president. “We offer a tailor-made solution for every transport task, which – together with an extensive series of outstanding and pro-active services – results in the best transport efficiency. In short: DAF Transport Efficiency. At the same time, we introduce new features for ultimate driver comfort. We perfectly combine the drivers dream with operator’s delight, putting DAF on the road to further growth in Europe and beyond.” ● O C T O B E R 2 0 2 6 | 21

STAYING SECURE ON THE ROAD THIS WINTER
AS 24 HELPS YOU CARRY ON WITH GREATER CONFIDENCE THIS WINTER
THE EXPERTS AT AS 24 OFFER SOME TIMELY ADVICE FOR BRITAIN’S BUSY TRUCKERS

inter requires HGV drivers to think ahead. Shorter days, changing weather and busy schedules can make every journey more demanding. You check your vehicle and plan your route but it is just as important to protect your fuel card and transactions when you stop to refuel. A lost or stolen card can disrupt a driver’s day and create extra work for the fleet manager. AS 24 combines secure fuel cards with practical tools that help fleets stay in control across Europe! Protection at every refuelling stop AS 24 fuel cards use encryption technology and an anti-cloning chip designed for professional use. Every transaction requires PIN authentication, including contactless payments, while NFC technology supports the secure exchange of data. Through the AS 24 Customer Area and

Fleet Manager mobile app, fleet managers can monitor cards, adjust spending limits and set usage rules at any time. If a card goes missing, they can block or temporarily suspend it in a few clicks, with changes taking effect across Europe. The same tools give fleet managers a clear view of transactions and invoices, making it easier to spot anything unusual. When winter schedules change at short notice, that visibility helps them respond quickly and keep drivers moving with fewer interruptions! For further protection, the optional CardControl service keeps a card locked by default. When drivers arrive at a station, they send an SMS to activate it for one hour, reducing the risk of fraudulent use without complicating their stop. Making the journey easier Security is one part of the journey, but
knowing where to refuel and having fewer arrangements to manage matter too. With more than 2,000 stations across 29 European countries, AS 24 helps drivers find a stop that fits their route. You can check a station’s location, available fuels and opening hours before setting off, so you know what to expect when you arrive. For cross-border journeys, the 4G PASSango toll box simplifies travel across European toll networks. PASSango Europe covers France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, plus selected bridges and tunnels. Fleet managers can activate the countries they need, manage toll boxes remotely and track transactions through the Customer Area. PASSango EuroPilot adds GPS vehicle tracking and location-based checks on fuel transactions for fleets that need greater visibility. Your winter security checklist Keep your fuel card separate from its PIN and never share your security details. Before setting off, check where you can refuel along your route so you can plan your stops with confidence. If your card goes missing or a transaction looks unfamiliar, report it straight away. AS 24’s security teams respond to suspicious activity throughout the year, and a dedicated assistance hotline is available 24/7. With secure transactions, convenient places to refuel and simpler toll travel, AS 24 helps you carry on with greater confidence this winter! ●

NEW TRUCK TECHNOLOGY CAUSES MASSIVE SKILLS SHORTAGE SAFETY SYSTEMS AND ELECTRIC MOTORS ARE CHANGING THE FACE OF TRANSPORT – BUT AT PRESENT THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE TO FIX THEM WHEN THEY GO WRONG
T
he latest driver assistance systems on trucks and vans are helping to save lives, while the increasing use of zero emission vehicles is helping to clean up the planet. But both advances come at a financial cost, as transport firms are discovering. Apart from the fact that zero emission vehicles cost more to buy than dieselengined variants, another major costly problem is beginning to become clear – there’s a huge shortage of technicians who can work on electric vehicles and advanced safety systems, either when they go wrong or when they are involved in a crash. And that shortage is driving up insurance costs, extending collision repair times and undermining consumer confidence, according to Thatcham Research. Over 70% of repair and salvage
professionals say the sector is facing a skills shortage More than 70% of repair and salvage professionals surveyed by Thatcham identified the widening skills gap as a growing challenge requiring industry-wide action. The study, conducted in partnership with the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), also reveals that evolving vehicle technologies, including electric vehicles and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), have compounded the issue due to increased repair complexities. Thatcham Research data illustrates the scale of the challenge: repair costs increased by 50% between 2019 and 2024, primarily by technological advancement and the specialist skills required to repair modern vehicles safely and effectively.
The Automotive Academy has trained 5,000 technicians over the past five years 24 | O C T O B E R 2 0 2 6
Survey respondents said other factors influencing the skills gap include an ageing workforce and talent migration to other industries offering better opportunities. Massive shortage The survey follows latest data from the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) warning that only a quarter of UK technicians are qualified to work on electric vehicles and that the shortfall could reach 44,000 technicians by 2035. Dean Lander, head of repair sector services at Thatcham Research, warned that the automotive repair sector stands at a crossroads. “As vehicles become more sophisticated, the gap between the skills our industry needs and the talent available is widening. This directly impacts insurance premiums, repair times and customer satisfaction across the UK.” Thatcham Research says industry-wide action is a must. The organisation’s own Automotive Academy has trained more than 5,000 technicians over the past five years, equipping them with the cutting-edge skills needed to handle today’s increasingly complex vehicles. Dean continued: “We need industry-wide commitment to invest in training, creating and promoting sustainable careers to attract the next generation of talent into this vital sector.” The survey also highlighted clear ways to address the current skills gap. A significant majority of respondents (61%) pointed to the need for greater visibility and promotion of apprenticeships within the education sector, underscoring

the importance of inspiring the next generation to pursue automotive careers. This was followed by 48% who called for increased investment in technical training, reinforcing the need to equip the workforce with the specialised skills required to meet the industry’s evolving demands. Measurable benefits Thatcham Research said that closing the skills gap can deliver measurable benefits across the automotive industry that include reduced insurance costs, improved customer experience and increased trust in the repair process, and sustainable career pathways in a sector vital to the UK economy. Following the Government’s recent Motor Insurance Taskforce Report, Thatcham Research is calling on insurers, repairers, vehicle manufacturers and policymakers to collectively invest in training infrastructure and actively promote automotive repair as a rewarding, technology-driven career choice. Jonathan Hewett, CEO of Thatcham
Research, said: “Skilled technical roles in collision repair should be more widely recognised as a great career choice that will never be re-placed by AI or automation. “We welcome the Government’s An industry-wide commitment to invest in training is needed commitment pipeline of talent our industry needs. to improving skills and training across “Thatcham Research’s Automotive the automotive sector outlined in the Academy is poised to support and fill this Motor Insurance Taskforce report. TRUCK TYRE TALKING
WE SIT DOWN FOR A CHAT WITH THE EXPERTS AT KUMHO TYRE
Q: Firstly, tell us a little about your firm, its history and where it stands in the industry today. A: Kumho Tire has manufactured tyres since 1960 and today is one of the world’s leading tyre manufacturers. Kumho supplies a comprehensive range of passenger car, SUV, van, truck and bus tyres to customers across the UK. Q: When I replace my truck tyres, I just choose the cheapest ones on offer. Would you say that is a wise move? A: The cheapest tyre is not always the most economical choice. Tyres have a direct impact on fuel consumption, mileage, vehicle uptime and maintenance costs. Looking at the total cost of ownership rather than simply the purchase price will often deliver better value over the life of the tyre. A tyre that lasts longer, delivers lower rolling resistance and provides more reliable performance could save significantly more money in the long run. Q: I run my tyres right down to the legal limit before replacing them. Is this the best policy? A: Not necessarily. While it is legal to use truck tyres until they reach the minimum UK tread depth requirement of 1mm across a continuous band covering at least threequarters of the tread width around the entire circumference, waiting until that point is not always the best approach. It can open you up to possible penalties when the tyre dips below the limit. As tread depth reduces, wet-weather performance and traction can deteriorate. Q: I run a variety of vehicles from 3.5-tonne vans to 40-tonne trucks. Do you make tyres to fit all these vehicles? A: Yes. Kumho offers an extensive range of tyres for light commercial vehicles, vans, trucks and buses operating in a variety of applications. Our PorTran van tyre range was developed specifically to 28 | O C T O B E R 2 0 2 6
meet the demands of modern operators, whatever their mission. Kumho’s breadth of range allows fleet operators to specify a tyre policy that is right for them and their vehicles. Q: My firm does not have a proper tyre safety strategy. Can you offer some tips about setting one up? A: Absolutely. Tyres are one of the most safety-critical components on any commercial vehicle, so having a structured tyre management programme is essential. A good tyre safety strategy should include: • Regular documented tyre inspections • The provision of life-extending services and pro-active maintenance • Routine pressure monitoring and adjustment • Driver defect reporting procedures • Wheel alignment and balancing checks • Training for drivers and maintenance personnel • Clearly defined tyre fitment policy Taking a proactive approach can help improve safety, reduce downtime, maximise tyre life and lower overall operating costs. ●
