LIFESTYLE LETTER
Bacchus or Dionysus, It’s Still California
October 2026 PUBLISHER
Ben Malkin | ben.malkin@citylifestyle.com CO-PUBLISHER
Robin Chesler | robin.chesler@citylifestyle.com
The October issue of Conejo Valley City Lifestyle is in many ways my favorite issue of the year. For certain, it’s the most fun. Our enjoyment of what is probably the “signature product” of California, premium wine, has always been more experiential than being a pedantic wine wonk. The Wikipedia definition of Bacchus is that he is the Roman god of agriculture, wine and fertility, and a master of general revelry. He is the exact Roman equivalent of the Greek god Dionysus, representing grape harvests, winemaking and emotional liberation through festivity. SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!!! In this issue we feature our top-shelf award-winning local wineries, where fine wine from Napa, Paso and our local AVA in Malibu is enjoyed along with music from great rock and pop bands, art experiences, yoga and even a dog-friendly environment. NABU Wines in Thousand Oaks, Mizel Estates in Hidden Valley and Nectar of the Dogs in Simi Valley can save you a trip up north to wine country. Bring some wine home and store it in your new wine cellar built by Cellar Masters. You can also stash it at their storage facility. A few months ago we were delighted to be invited to Daou Vinyards 2023 Soul of a Lion release event, Soul of a City, at TAO in Hollywood. Soul of a Lion is their flagship wine—a Bordeaux blend, 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot, that earned a well-deserved 99 rating. The event and the setting at TAO were a complete success; a perfect example of our experiential enjoyment of the wine scene. Finally, on a much more serious note, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Please donate, and if possible, get involved in an activity promoting awareness. Wear pink.

AWARD-WINNING WINE, GREAT MUSIC AND A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE
For those of you who have visited NABU Wines, you already know just how special this place is. This unique urban winery has been producing handcrafted, award-winning wines since 2012 while also bringing some of the best live music Los Angeles and the Conejo Valley have to offer. Owner Greg Barnett often says, “It doesn’t matter if you don’t know who is playing on a Friday, Saturday night or Sunday afternoon; every band is great!” And that’s exactly the spirit of NABU Wines—great wine, great music and a welcoming atmosphere that keeps guests coming back. NABU Wines was honored with six wins in the 2026 Best Readers’ Choice Awards presented by the Los Angeles Daily News this year, taking home the titles of Best Wine Tasting, Best Winery, Best Live Entertainment, Best Night Spot, Best Paint Night and Favorite Happy Hour! When you visit NABU’s winery, you may not know quite what to expect, but the moment you step inside, you realize you’ve arrived at a true wine destination. While NABU Wines continues to produce wines from Napa Valley and the Malibu Coast, its winemaking has expanded to several AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) throughout California. In Mendocino County, NABU produces Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Talmage Bench in Ukiah, along with Pinot Noir from the southern Sonoma Coast. From the Central Coast, NABU produces Albariño and Sauvignon Blanc from Paso Robles. This diverse selection allows NABU to showcase the distinct character and personality of each region, bringing them together under one roof in the Conejo Valley. This year, NABU Wines achieved outstanding results at the Los Angeles International Wine Competition, earning an impressive six Silver and two Bronze medals for its Red Blends, Late Harvest Port, Chardonnay, Albariño and package design. These award-winning wines represent grapes sourced from Napa Valley, the Malibu Coast, Paso Robles and Mendocino County, showcasing NABU’s commitment to crafting exceptional wines from some of California’s most celebrated wine regions. Why NABU? We’re asked this all the time. “When my wife, Janet Barnett, and I started the winery, our main focus was producing wines from Napa Valley and our local mountains of Malibu. That’s where the name NABU came from,” says Barnett. Any connection to “Star Wars?” “No,” Barnett laughs. “But we do have fun with our name every May 4th, Star Wars Day, at the winery. People arrive in costumes with lightsabers and more. It’s a lot of fun!” NABU Wines is the only winery in the Conejo Valley open every day at noon for wine tasting, making it an ideal destination for wine lovers throughout the week. Their signature wine flight features white, red and blended wines, thoughtfully curated by the knowledgeable staff. Each pour comes with a story, as the NABU team takes great pleasure in sharing the inspiration, winemaking process and unique character behind each wine with their guests. When you look around NABU Wines, you’ll quickly notice that music is a big part of the experience. The Barnetts have deep roots in the music industry, having started their careers in the 1980s immersed in the glam and heavy metal scene on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, California. During those early years, they created album covers, rock photography, magazines, band logos and show graphics for local bands and touring acts. That creative history remains an important part of NABU Wines today. The winery features vintage audio equipment and an extensive vinyl collection spanning decades and genres, from jazz and rock to heavy metal, current releases and everything in between. Guests are welcome to choose a record from their collection to spin on the turntable—or bring along one of their own favorites to share. FYI, NABU Wines offers a great Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 3-7 p.m., featuring special pricing on wines by the glass and by the bottle, as well as on wine tastings. It’s the perfect way to unwind after work, meet up with friends and enjoy some award-winning NABU Wines. NABU Wines also provides a unique and inviting setting for private events. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary, holiday or hosting a company gathering, the winery offers a relaxed atmosphere where great wine, music and good company come together.

WINES
Wild of Spirit. Warm of Heart. On a gorgeous fall afternoon, you stroll through a stunning vineyard surrounded by mountains and vast blue sky as far as the eye can see. Afterward, relaxing at a lovely table set among the vines, you savor a flight of luscious, velvety red wines. You’ve just experienced the unexpected magic of Mizel Estate Wines, nestled in the heart of Thousand Oaks’ Hidden Valley, just 25 miles north of Los Angeles.
PERFECT PROVENANCE
The name “Mizel” is a blend of the names of the owners, Michael and Zelene Fowler, who established the vineyard in 2014 with the goal of creating world-class wines. Mizel Estate Wines are grown on a 38-acre estate in the Malibu Coast AVA (American Viticultural Area). The geography of Mizel Estate, located on a fertile valley floor protected by mountains, provides ideal growing conditions for exceptional fruit. The grapes bask in the valley’s warmth, yet are cooled by ocean breezes, which allows them to retain their acidity. When you taste Mizel’s fine wines, you drink in the pure expression of their vineyard. Mizel’s Winemaker, Guillaume Fabre, says “creating great wine is a question of balance; that unique equation that enables an ideal blend of climate, soil and the grape itself.”
HANDCRAFTED ELEGANCE
Mizel Estate Wines is a boutique, limited-production winemaker, focused on quality. Sustainably grown and hand-harvested, only the choicest grapes are used for Mizel Wines.
“Mizel’s dedicated team has control over the entire winemaking process, which allows us to consistently produce excellent wines,” says Michael Fowler. Mizel grows six French grape varieties on their estate that are well suited to their terroir: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Syrah. Throughout the growing season, the vines are nurtured under the direction of Estate Manager Hector Ambriz and Winemaker Fabre, who bring forth the premium characteristics of each individual block of Mizel’s extraordinary fruit. As harvest approaches, the grapes are carefully monitored to ensure that each variety is harvested at its peak. The winemaking commences in Paso Robles, with Fabre managing crush and fermentation, carefully developing each grape variety’s unique flavor profile. Afterward, each varietal is aged in superlative French oak for 18 months. “There is a little bit of an art and science to figuring out which types of oak and how old the barrels should be for each varietal. Guillaume is the expert, and he knows best,” shares Michael. When the aging is complete, the Fowlers meet with Fabre to taste wine from over 30 different barrels to decide which ones to blend. This passionate winemaking team combines their expertise and perspectives to skillfully blend Mizel Estate’s signature wines: First Impression Bordeaux Blend, Easy to Please Grenache and Smooth Touch Syrah. Each vintage is meticulously blended based on the characteristics of the fruit from the year’s harvest. The results of the Mizel team’s efforts shine through in their opulent red wines. Mizel’s exquisite, nuanced red wines dazzle the palate with lingering flavors of fruit and spice. CONTINUED >

We have been fans of the premium wine from DAOU Vineyards in Paso Robles for many years. The family heritage, the spectacular setting and hospitality of their vineyards and tasting room and, most of all, their best of the best Paso Robles AVA Cabernet Sauvignon have always made DAOU very special. Our most recent Paso Robles visit was featured in our July 2026 “Explore” issue. That visit to DAOU Mountain included tastings of their Patrimony Reserve wines (all 100s on the “Chez Benny” wine score scale) and a meal worthy of three Michelin stars if they were a restaurant—it was a lifetime memory! Lucky us! Robin and I were then invited to attend their Soul of a City introduction to their 99-point rated 2023 Soul of a Lion, DAOU Vineyards flagship wine. The wine is spectacular: a Left Bank Bordeaux-style blend that’s 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. Of course, we said YES! When and where? We will be there! Hollywood? Okay, let’s plan a staycation at a nearby hotel to really enjoy ourselves and avoid Uber or driving. Held at TAO in Hollywood on April 23, the event featured curated tastings of the new vintage alongside rare library selections, with a special media tasting led by Senior Winemaker José Alberto Santos and wine expert Dev the Somm (Devin Reed). The dynamic celebration of wine and culture also included a welcome toast from DAOU Brand Ambassador Laura Reynolds, along with immersive elements such as a custom perfume bar and a live mural. TAO is almost more of an experience than a restaurant; it’s a great setting for a modern sultry film noir. I will let the photos tell the story. DAOU 2023 Soul of a Lion is top, top shelf. We have a case stashed away for aging or a great steak dinner. Knowing me, I predict that it will be finished off well before it ages. Learn more at Daouvineyards.com. CONTINUED >

Beyond the Buffet Las Vegas, America’s Culinary Capital
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MELISSA CURTIN
Las Vegas has long evolved from its all-you-can-eat budget beginnings into one of the most dynamic dining destinations in the country. Today, the city is a playground for culinary heavyweights and rising stars: where Michelin-recognized chefs, global-inspired menus and boundary-pushing concepts converge under neon lights. My last getaway to Las Vegas followed a road trip through the stillness of Death Valley, trading desert silence for sparkly Sin City. The 2-hour drive out of the hottest, driest and lowest-elevation national parks in North America capped off hiking and rejuvenation at The Inn at Death Valley. As the mountains loomed in all directions, some capped with snow, we slid through the rugged rural town of Pahrump before cruising by miles of Joshua trees in the Mojave Desert. Just a couple hours later, the cool desert air and starry skies were replaced by traffic, signs touting the latest greatest show and the glitz of jam-packed theme-driven hotels with blaring lights.

When we arrived at Conrad Las Vegas at Resorts World, we went straight to the room, courtesy of advanced online check-in and a digital room key that made arrival easy and discreet. The property features three Hilton brands—Las Vegas Hilton, Conrad Las Vegas and Crockfords Las Vegas—featuring entertainment, theatre, shopping, spas and worldclass dining. From the 58th floor, a 5.5-acre pool oasis, with seven distinct pool options, beckoned 52 floors below. But after the drive, we weren’t leaving the comfort of the suite, until our first reservation through a stealthy entrance to a secret speakeasy off the casino lobby. On a shelf in the fake Japanese toy storefront, a push of the secret trinket grants entry to Here Kitty Kitty Vice Den. The swanky lounge serves up Singaporean flair with an unforgettable menu of cocktails—some that glow in the dark, others with Matcha and Mezcal, and several with surprises like the Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey Espresso Martini with Reese’s Pieces bits. A Beertails menu—infused spirits with beer—offers uncanny concoctions not found anywhere else. Just a few feet away, one-year-old Stubborn Seed features a dimly-lit, stylish and moody restaurant inspired by prior success in Miami and led by Jeremy Ford, a Top Chef winner with Michelin-starred pedigree. Decked in red leather banquettes, dramatic glass chandeliers, a Big Wave graffiti art piece and sexy art murals, it’s a celebration of food with a glass-fronted kitchen inviting guests to admire the chefs in action. While the restaurant specializes in multi-course tasting menus with playful options, we chose to select our own dishes, starting with plump oysters from Washington state with eyedropper hot sauce, paired with Moet bubbly and an order of Cacio e Pepe Cheesy puffs that tasted like French gougères. Choose from a high-end menu of fresh fish, caviar and raw bar items inspired by the Mediterranean coast. Guest favorites include dry-aged fish, a two-tiered seafood tower, seafood paella, crab cigars and tableside flambe salt-baked branzino. The flavors of the Dover Sole, Prawns and King Crab Alla Vodka pasta are exceptional. A tasty Sancerre or Greek Assyrtiko are perfect complements to decadent starters like Bluefin Sashimi or Caviar and Jamon Iberico Croquetas topped with gold leaf. A night here is Oh La La Las Vegas Under the Sea! The Wynn never disappoints, with sushi-led Mizumi recently proving to be one of the Top 10 meals of my life. This time, for night three, I traded Japanese culinary artistry for the Wynn’s new hard-earned reservation ticket: Sartiano’s Italian Steakhouse. On the terrace, the coveted tables overlook the golf course and Sphere in the distance. Don’t miss the decadent Caviar Cannoli bites, Fluke Ceviche and luscious light meatballs. Ordering a surf-and-turf medley should be on your indulgent itinerary: Medium-rare Ribeye topped with Truffle Short Rib and Egg Yolk Raviolo paired with a plate of loaded lobster Bucatini with a spice kick. Here at Sartiano’s watch couples and groups “ooh” and “aah” over 40-ounce dry-aged Bistecca alla Fiorentina, sliced tableside, and creamy fettucine tossed and twirled on a rolling cart, swimming in springtime asparagus among shaved “blankets” of prosciutto, replacing truffles for the season. For the ultimate dessert finale, Sartiano’s Butterscotch Budino is a must. Who’s counting calories at this point? Gastro-entertainment may be the best reason to visit Las Vegas, with compelling dining options worthy of any celebration, featuring great food staged as spectacle. The buffet era is long gone. What's replaced it is a town where the culinary journey is absolutely worth the trip. We were blown away by the outstanding preparation of the wood-fired Australian Wagyu Skirt Steak, with tempura mushrooms and skillet of truffle patatas bravas, doused in shaved parmesan. The Ember Grilled Branzino with brown butter piccata arrived with colorful flowers and tomatoes in a sinful sauce. This was only the start of an allstar roster of global culinary talent in Las Vegas. To keep the night going, we sipped wine and rare spirits at the top of the Conrad Hotel above the shining Las Vegas strip, at Alle Lounge on 66. The Conrad’s stunning panoramic space also hosts the quiet and private-feeling continental breakfast and evening Social Hour during the day, offering a sense of calm and stability above the city’s chaos. On night two, the Wynn Las Vegas was calling from a half mile away for an unforgettable dinner followed by a high-tech immersive 360-degree theater show called “Awakening,” the Wynn’s mesmerizing visual experience with wild costumes, laser lights, disappearing characters and acrobatic stunts like ballet atop a dancer’s head. Dinner at PISCES at the Wynn is everything you want Las Vegas to be, starting with the escalator descent to the decadent Bar Parasol and the Lake of Dreams waterfall and Mediterranean fantasy. Just a year old, the theatrical space, with mosaic floors, glamorous hand-blown Italian globe lighting and copper mirrored portholes, boasts a seafood bar display and views of a cascading 45-foot waterfall that morphs into a color-changing light and sound show with moving animatronic frog and emojis.

“WE UNDERSTAND THAT TASTES ARE UNIQUE FOR EACH PROJECT, SO THEIR WINE CELLAR IS PERSONALIZED TO SUIT THEIR NEEDS. YOU DREAM IT, AND CELLAR MASTERS WILL CREATE IT!”
Have you ever wondered if it’s time to create a wine cellar in your home? How many bottles of wine do you have? How many cases? How many wine racks or refrigerators are currently storing your collection? Perhaps you have a growing wine collection you’d love to display in your home or business. These are some of the questions Scott Berry, owner of Cellar Masters, hears every day from homeowners and wine collectors.

It’s always nice to see our work in the wild,” says Berry.
GETTING STARTED WITH CELLAR MASTERS
Cellar Masters offers a wide range of solutions for homes and businesses, including wine walls, under-stair installations, contemporary designs and traditional wine cellars. The company has been designing, building and serving cellars since 1990. “Wine features can start with a small collection or larger,” says Berry. “Some wine walls are for display and at room temperature, and for temperature-controlled environments in your living room or dining room, we have been very creative in building them for our clients.” The possibilities are almost endless. A wine feature can be designed to store cases, large format and individual bottles while

FINDING SPACE IN UNEXPECTED PLACES
One recent project demonstrates just how creative wine storage can be. Cellar Masters installed a wine cellar in the kitchen of a Westlake Village home, transforming an underused desk area into a stylish storage feature with black oil-rubbed locking steel doors and glass. “You just never know where you can place your collection,” says Berry. That creativity is at the heart of what Cellar Masters does. The company has assembled an experienced team to design, build and install custom wine cellars and wine storage solutions for homes and businesses. Cellar Masters has built more than 2,500 custom wine cellars throughout the region and across California. Whether your collection consists of a few special bottles or hundreds of cases, Cellar Masters can create a space that is both functional and beautiful, designed specifically around your collection, your home and your lifestyle. Nectar of the Dogs Wine

LOCA LLY SOU R CE D | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Nectar of the Dogs Wine (NOTDW) is more than a tasting room, it’s a destination built around the simple idea that great wine is better when it’s shared, and that every bottle can help make a difference.
Nectar of the Dogs Wine was born from a passion for wine and a commitment to helping dogs in need. With handcrafted California wines, a lively calendar of events and a mission to support dog rescue, NOTDW has created a space in Simi Valley where guests can sip, socialize and celebrate while giving back to a cause close to the brand’s heart.
MORE THAN A TASTING ROOM
Nectar of the Dogs Wine was born from a passion for wine and a commitment to helping dogs in need. The company’s mission goes beyond producing quality wine; a portion of bottle sales supports local nonprofit rescue Outta the Cage, in addition to other local rescues. That spirit of giving is part of what makes the brand unique. The dog-inspired identity is playful and welcoming, but the mission behind it is meaningful: bring people together, create memorable
experiences and use the business as a vehicle to give back. “At its core and since the beginning, Nectar of the Dogs Wine was inspired by the love of the rescue dogs that changed our lives, and our love of wine,” said Founder Melanie Garibay. Giving back is only part of the story. Garibay also envisioned NOTDW as a place where people could gather and feel at home. Since opening its tasting room in 2023, the response from the local community has helped fuel the company’s growth. “Opening the tasting room was a labor of love, and the overwhelming support from the community has made it all worth the hard work and effort,” says Garibay. That sense of welcome is evident in the dogfriendly tasting room’s personality. Dog lovers, wine

enthusiasts, music fans and neighbors can all find a reason to stop by and stay awhile.
CRAFTED TO BE SHARED
At the heart of Nectar of the Dogs Wine is small-production, handcrafted wine. The brand’s portfolio showcases a diverse collection of wines, from crisp, refreshing whites and rosés to rich reds and distinctive blends. Vineyard sources span some of California’s celebrated growing regions, including Napa Valley, Atlas Peak, Paso Robles and Lodi, allowing the winemaking team to explore different varietals, styles and expressions while maintaining a commitment to quality. Guests can experience the wines through tasting flights, glasses or bottles, making the tasting room an easy place to discover something new whether you’re a longtime wine enthusiast or simply looking for a fun place to spend an afternoon or evening.
SIP, STAY & CELEBRATE
If wine is at the heart of Nectar of the Dogs Wine, community is its soul. The Simi Valley tasting room has become a gathering place for live music, special events and experiences designed to bring people through the doors and give them a reason to stay awhile. The calendar features live performances, themed nights, trivia, wine releases and other events that turn a traditional tasting room visit into something much more social. NOTDW provides an expansive industrial-style space that makes an ideal setting for private events. The nearly 3,000-square-foot venue can be transformed to accommodate a wide range of occasions, including milestone celebrations, rehearsal gatherings, fundraisers, holiday parties and corporate events. From intimate gatherings to larger celebrations, each event is uniquely tailored to meet the guest’s creative vision. The staff’s extensive experience in event production brings a level of expertise that helps make planning and execution seamless from start to finish. Plus, the venue’s comprehensive production package includes professional audio, video and lighting, providing everything needed to elevate events featuring live music, presentations, performances and other entertainment. Ultimately, NOTDW is about bringing people together, with a great glass of wine in hand and a good cause at heart. Whether you stop in for a tasting, come out to hear a local band, gather friends for a celebration or book the space for your next event, the experience is designed to be shared. Because at Nectar of the Dogs Wine, every gathering has the potential to become something more: a great memory, a stronger community and, with every bottle, a little more help for dogs in need. For more than 25 years, Southern California Reproductive Center (SCRC) has been helping patients build families through advanced fertility care grounded in medical expertise, individualized treatment and a physician-led approach. Founded in 2000 by reproductive endocrinologists Dr. Mark Surrey and Dr. Hal Danzer, SCRC has grown from a single Beverly Hills practice into one of the most established fertility practices in the United States, now serving communities throughout Southern California. In August 2026, SCRC reached another milestone with the opening of a new satellite location in Westlake Village. Located within CURE Medical at the Center for
Health & Wellbeing at the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village, the new location brings SCRC's reproductive care closer to patients in the Conejo Valley and surrounding communities. The expansion reflects a simple idea that has remained central to SCRC since its founding: Fertility care should be both highly specialized and accessible to the people who need it. “This is an exciting moment for our practice and for the patients we serve,” said Dr. Mark Surrey, cofounder of SCRC. “Expanding to Westlake Village reflects our ongoing commitment to making world-class fertility care more accessible
across Southern California. We are proud to grow from a foundation of physician-led values that have guided this practice from the beginning.” BRINGING CARE TO THE CONEJO VALLEY Fertility treatment often involves frequent appointments for bloodwork, ultrasounds and other monitoring. While advanced treatment may be concentrated at a specialized fertility center, the logistical demands of traveling back and forth can add another layer of stress to an already emotional process. SCRC's Westlake Village location is designed to address that challenge. It will CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/C ON E J OVA L L E Y

serve as a central monitoring point for SCRC patients from Santa Barbara and Beverly Hills, allowing them to complete bloodwork and ultrasound monitoring closer to home during treatment cycles. New patients can also begin their care at the Westlake Village location, with consultations available either in person or virtually. The new location is part of a broader Southern California network that includes SCRC offices in Beverly Hills, Santa Barbara, Pasadena and Ventura. Together, these locations allow patients to receive local monitoring while remaining connected to the same physician

group and SCRC's established laboratory and clinical infrastructure. “We built this practice one patient at a time, and that approach has never changed,” said Dr. Hal Danzer, cofounder of SCRC. “Our Westlake Village location is a reflection of where we are headed, a physician-led practice continuing to grow in a way that puts patients first. We’re excited to bring our care closer to communities that have long needed it.” The Westlake Village location in CURE Medical at the Center for Health & Wellbeing at the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village is a setting focused on
individualized medical and wellness experiences. SCRC's presence there extends the practice's physician-led reproductive care into one of the region's premier wellness destinations. A PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO FERTILITY TREATMENT Although technology has transformed reproductive medicine, SCRC believes that successful fertility care starts with understanding the individual patient. “Fertility care is not one-size-fits-all, and it shouldn't be treated that way,” is a principle that guides the practice. Two

patients may have the same diagnosis on paper but require very different approaches based on their biology, medical history and personal goals. SCRC's physicians work with patients to develop individualized treatment plans and explain the reasoning behind those recommendations. The goal is for patients to understand their options and make informed decisions rather than simply follow a predetermined protocol. That philosophy is reflected in the practice's physicianowned structure. SCRC was founded by physicians and remains physician-owned today. Its medical team includes Dr. Mark Surrey, Dr. Hal Danzer, Dr. Carolyn Alexander, Dr. Susan Maxwell and Dr. Diana Chavkin, all reproductive medicine specialists committed to individualized patient care. The physicians also hold clinical faculty appointments at UCLA and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, bringing academic and clinical experience to their work. COMPREHENSIVE REPRODUCTIVE SERVICES UNDER ONE PRACTICE SCRC offers a broad range of fertility services designed to meet patients at different stages of their reproductive journeys. These include in vitro fertilization (IVF), IUI, egg freezing and fertility preservation, donor egg treatment and other forms of third-party reproduction, including gestational surrogacy. The practice also provides male fertility evaluation and treatment, diagnostic fertility testing, genetic testing and preimplantation genetic testing, as well as advanced reproductive and minimally invasive surgery. For couples from all walks of life, SCRC offers family-building options including IVF, reciprocal IVF, donor gametes and surrogacy. The practice also works with single parents by choice and intended parents pursuing donor or gestational-carrier arrangements. Patients may come to SCRC for many different reasons, including unexplained infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, tubal factor infertility, endometriosis, ovarian dysfunction, diminished ovarian reserve or male factor infertility. Others seek fertility preservation to maintain future options, including those facing medical treatments that may affect fertility.
EXPERTISE WITHOUT THE DISTANCE SCRC's physicians say patients consistently value two things: the practice's level of expertise and the personal nature of its care. Patients are supported by care coordinators who understand their history, questions are answered in accessible language and the team strives to ensure that patients feel known rather than processed through a system. That emphasis on continuity extends to SCRC's Beverly Hills flagship location, which houses the practice's own assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratory. Keeping embryology and patient care under the same roof allows the clinical and laboratory teams to communicate directly about each case. The laboratory, combined with SCRC's depth of experience in reproductive medicine, provides an important foundation for the practice's IVF and related services. SCRC's physicians have practiced through decades of advances in reproductive medicine while continuing to invest in new technologies and treatment approaches. LOOKING AHEAD As SCRC enters its next chapter, the Westlake Village expansion represents both growth and a continuation of the practice's original mission. The goal is not simply to add another location, but to make specialized fertility care more accessible while preserving the physician-led, individualized approach that has defined SCRC since 2000. For patients throughout the Conejo Valley, Santa Barbara, Ventura and greater Southern California, the new Westlake Village location offers another point of access to a fertility practice with more than two decades of experience. At its core, SCRC's message remains straightforward: Every patient deserves the opportunity to understand their fertility options and pursue the path to family building that is right for them. There’s Always
Room at the Table
ARTICLE BY KIM PAGANO
Some of the best moments in my life have happened around a table. From the time I was little, I remember having dinner with my parents. Then, when I had my own family, sitting down for dinner with our kids became some of our most meaningful time together. It was our chance to communicate, check in, look into their eyes and really see how they were doing. I think that is something we need now more than ever. Today, that table is filled with family, kids and grandkids, lots of food, laughter and usually everyone talking at the same time! Other times, I’ve sat down with friends, business owners or people I had just met—and by the time we got up from the table, something had changed. We were connected. Even at our family business, lunchtime has always been a little like that. Everyone is usually going in a hundred different directions, but for those few minutes around the table, we stop, catch up, laugh, talk about what’s happening and reconnect. There’s something special about sharing food and drinks with others. It gives us permission to slow down, put our phones aside, look at one another and have a real conversation. Think about your favorite food memories. Chances are, they aren’t just about what you ate. You remember who was there. Maybe it was your grandmother’s recipe that nobody can make quite the same way. Maybe it was pizza with your

kids on a busy school night, a glass of wine with a girlfriend who needed to talk or a dinner where you met someone who became an important part of your life. I see the same thing happen at our business mixers. We share a meal, but what we’re really sharing are stories, ideas, introductions, encouragement and opportunities. Someone can walk in knowing no one and leave with a new friend, a referral or even a new direction. That’s the magic of gathering around a table. So, as life gets busy, make time for the table. Invite the neighbor. Call the friend you haven’t seen. Sit down with your family without rushing. Ask someone new to join you for coffee. You never know what can happen when you pull up one more chair. Because when it comes to family, friendship, business and community, I believe there’s always room at the table. With gratitude to my family, that always had an extra chair at our table, and to carry on the tradition. EMPOWERING LOCAL CANCER PATIENTS AND FAMILIES THROUGH COMPASSION, EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY
For 35 years, Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara has stood alongside those in our community fighting cancer, as well as their families, friends and caregivers. Their mission is to uplift and strengthen people impacted by cancer by providing support, fostering compassionate communities and breaking down barriers to care. “I found a place where I could learn how to reduce the natural stress and anxiety from several surgeries, a multitude of tests and a year of infusions. I found a place where there were others going through similar experiences, and from whom I could learn that I wasn’t alone, and that I could be a survivor,” said Pat Thomas, a 12-year breast cancer survivor, describing what she found at Cancer Support Community Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara over 10 years ago. During her first visit to her oncologist, the nurse handed her a brochure for Cancer Support Community, encouraging her to seek support.

Pat admits, “When my courage began to wane, I realized I needed some support and decided to see what it was all about.” Conversely, her husband Bill, a retired Navy combat carrier pilot, felt, “I don’t need no stinking group.” Bill tells this story often and now laughs at his first thoughts about a support group. Yet, after attending the Cancer Support Community orientation with Pat, she suggested Bill consider the Caregivers group, led by Cofounder Marty Nason. Bill remembers that the group members became close friends over the 10 years he attended, laughing, crying and supporting each other through their challenges and worries. On top of Pat’s diagnosis, the couple’s young granddaughter had just been diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a very rare cancer that develops in skeletal muscles. Their support groups became safe spaces where they could share their fears. Bill stated, “I needed a place where I could talk without worrying about upsetting Pat or our granddaughter and be able to work out my fears.”
Pat encourages others that may be hesitant to join a support group, “Just try it, for at least five visits. If it isn’t for you, that’s fine. If it IS for you, you will know quickly because you’ll feel stronger. Promise to give it a try and you will be glad you did!” For women, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S., according to the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer is also the second leading cause of death among women. Cancer Support Community offers a variety of breast cancer support groups: Newly Diagnosed, Advanced Breast Cancer and Life After Breast Cancer (all stages). Joining a support group offers a powerful source of emotional support, understanding and empowerment for those facing this diagnosis. Whether someone is newly diagnosed, in early or advanced stages or adjusting to life after cancer, all programs are offered to anyone impacted by cancer. Through shared experiences and guided discussions, participants can reduce feelings of isolation, learn coping strategies and gain valuable insight into treatment options. Many also find renewed strength through active involvement in their recovery, stress‑reduction practices and access to community resources. Cancer Support Community serves Ventura County, Santa Barbara County and the West San Fernando Valley, providing comprehensive, evidence‑based psychosocial support in English and Spanish. All services are FREE and include professionally-led support groups in English, Spanish and Japanese, individual counseling, social events, wellness classes and educational workshops. Cancer Support Community offers over 20 different support groups each month. Some groups are cancer-specific, but also offered are “all cancers” groups, as well as support groups for caregivers, our bereaved participants, survivors, family members and young adults. Whether a participant is impacted by breast cancer or any other cancer, all of the support groups, wellness classes, educational workshops and support services are available to our community of cancer survivors, caregivers and family members. Together, group members build resilience, hope and a sense of connection on their path toward healing. CONTINUED >
