It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

What are you thankful for this holiday season? We can think of a few things. Because C’ville is such a caring community, we’re thankful to have so many compassionate local nonprofits to which we can donate during this season of giving back.

We’ve listed a few (although there are so many more!) that you can contribute to this year. And because it’s the time of year to give rather than receive, we’ve highlighted several places to shop for the perfect holiday gift AND where you can feel the spirit of the season, from The Shops at Stonefield to Barracks Road Shopping Center.

Even though the temps are dropping, snow is imminent, and it’s tempting to stay inside by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate, now is one of the best times of the year to get out, explore, and enjoy the holiday décor. Do you like to shop around for the holidays, bouncing from one shopping center to the next? Or do you prefer to knock your holiday gift list out in one fell swoop by visiting only one shopping district?

Charlottesville’s vibrant shopping scene has you covered either way for the holidays.

We know that the downtown mall is one of the best places for all of our holiday shopping wants and needs, but there are plenty of places outside city center to get our shop on this Christmas, too.

There may be no reason to shop anywhere else after a visit to Barracks Road, home to dozens of locally-driven boutiques like Scarpa, Folly Home Furnishing, Albemarle Angler, Rebecca’s Natural Food, and Oliva, along with such national retailers as Anthropologie, Lilly Pulitzer, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and Yankee Candle. Make sure you pop into The Virginia Shop for Cavaliercentric stocking stuffers, The Happy Cook for the top brands in kitchen and cookingware, and Great Outdoor Provision Co. for gifts for lovers of the outdoors.

Since The Shops at Stonefield opened in 2012 on the corner of Hydraulic Road and Seminole Trail, it has become one of C’ville’s top shopping destinations.

And Stonefield is where serious holiday shoppers want to spend the season gifthunting among an eclectic mix of shops like BlueMercury, Kendra Scott, Mincer’s, Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, Whimsies Kids, Chocolatesville, and the just opened Sephora. Stonefield will no doubt be decked out in festive lights and holiday decor this year, which always makes gift shopping that much better.

Show some love to Fashion Square Mall this holiday season, where you likely spent many a day in your youth during the 80s and 90s living the indoor mall rat life. Fashion Square has Victoria’s Secret, J. Crew Factory (yes to discounted J. Crew!), Bath & Body Works, Spencer’s Gifts, Eddie Bauer, Build-a-Bear Workshop, Kay Jewelers, and many others, including anchors Belk and JC Penny, where you are sure to find just the right present to put under the tree.

The newest shopping district on the block, 5th Street Station is anchored by Wegmans, Field & Stream, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.

While one might not think of Wegmans as a source of prime holiday shopping, don’t forget the grocery chain has an aisle dedicated to homewares and home entertaining, if you are looking for a last-minute gift. It’s also a great place to find stocking stuffers and hostess gifts, like organic beauty products and craft beer and wine. Pop into PetSmart to find holiday treats for the pet in your life, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa for a gift card for that friend who needs some pampering, and of course Field & Stream and Dick’s for presents for the sporting enthusiast on your list.

Blink and you might miss it – but you won’t want to. Add Seminole Square Shopping Center to your must-visit list, and make sure you stop into The Crystal Connection, where you’ll find a wide selection of jewelry as well as healing energy-infused crystals, gems, stones, and rock clusters (in amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, and so many more) that will raise your gift-ee’s holiday vibration.

You’ll also find a mix of unique local shops and retail chains that include Andrew Minton Jewelers, Edible Arrangements, Laughing Sheep Yarns, Tobacconist & Gifts, Marshalls, The Party Starts Here, and Plan 9 Music that should knock out a few hard-tofind items on your holiday shopping list.

Like many Ronald McDonald House Charities, the local house – located a few blocks from the University of Virginia Medical Center – helps families with sick or injured children stay together by providing a temporary, home-like environment in addition to other support, resources, and comfort offerings. The local Ronald McDonald House hosts up to 1,000 family stays annually, 365 days per year, so the need is there.

Providing compassionate care and safe, loving homes to lost, abandoned, or homeless animals is the local SPCA’s mission, and if you’re a dog or cat lover, the holidays are a great time to break open your wallet and help a pet in need. The local SPCA supports a variety of ways to donate, from an Amazon Wish List to “In Honor of” memorial gifts.
