Sexual Assault Resource Scope Agency

Mission Eliminate sexual violence and its impacts through education, advocacy, and support to all individuals affected by sexual assault and abuse.

1 in 3 women, 1 in 6 men, and 1 in 2 transgender individuals have experienced sexual violence at some point in their lifetime.

Based on the population in our service area, we estimate that 44,888 women and 12,342 men in our area will experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime.

Together, we can build a community free from sexual violence.

When survivors lack access to mental health, medical, and legal assistance, they are more likely to experience severe and long-term post-traumatic stress. Survivors recover a sense of well-being more quickly when they feel fully supported by family and friends.

Established in 1974, SARA has an unmatched ability to address this need. Hope and healing is made possible by your generosity.

Central Virginia Community Justice provides a brave space for those involved in crime or harm to decide how the harm should be addressed, outside of a courtroom. People who have been harmed ask for what they need to heal, and those who are responsible for harm grow by taking action and accountability. This is restorative justice (RJ). RJ is a voluntary, confidential process that studies show reduces trauma symptoms, increases empathy, reduces reoffending, and makes communities safer.

We positively impact our community by creating opportunities for healthy aging through social engagement, physical well-being, civic involvement, creativity, and lifelong learning.

What big plans does your nonprofit have going into 2024?

Because of our generous donors, The Center is able to offer more than 150 programs every week addressing multiple dimensions of wellness for adults 50 and better. The impact our supporters have on the region’s public health and overall well-being is immense. Happily, over 10,000 people come to The Center for this healthy aging programming every year, but there are over 60,000 older adults living in Charlottesville and its surrounding counties – every single one of them deserves the opportunity to age to the best of their potential. As we move into a new year, our goal is to continue to extend the incredible power of The Center’s healthy aging mission to anyone in our area who wishes to increase their years in good health. This will require creating even more relevant, meaningful programs accessible to older adults with a full range of interests and abilities. Working alongside our community partners, volunteer instructors and program leaders, and philanthropic supporters, we’re looking forward to furthering the reach and impact of these healthy aging opportunities.

The Garden, located at 950 Melbourne Road, is free and open to the public from dawn to dusk. We invite the community to enjoy the Garden with friends and family this holiday season. Park on Melbourne and enjoy a walk on our trails for a convenient natural respite. We also offer Little Nature Explorers in the Garden for children ages 3-5 and their caregivers. Every session has a new topic and includes storytime, art, and nature discovery. This program, free of charge, takes place in the Garden on the first Thursday and third Tuesday of the month (weather permitting). Walk ins are welcome at this free program, but we invite you to register by emailing programs@piedmontgarden. org to receive reminders and weather notices.

Facilitating Change Through Restorative Justice Central Virginia Community Justice is the only organization providing restorative justice (RJ) services in Charlottesville& Albemarle. In a restorative process, those who were harmed ask for what they need to heal, and those who are responsible for harm grow by taking action and accountability. We serve adults and youth involved in criminal charges or community harms, at no charge to any participant.

LVCA promotes adult literacy through equitable, inclusive, free, confidential, one-to-one English and Citizenship tutoring.

What big plans does your nonprofit have going into 2024?

2024 is a very special year for Building Goodness Foundation -- it is our 25th Anniversary! We are thrilled to celebrate this special milestone with events and projects all year long, including International Women’s Day on March 8 and our Volunteer Celebration in the fall. In 2024 we are kicking off the next 25 years with increased school construction in Guatemala, and more home projects in Haiti. These projects will expand access to education and safe housing for thousands of our global neighbors who are living in challenging circumstances.

How does your organization contribute and give back to our community over the holiday season? Do you have any special interests or programs you feature this time of year?

Everyone has something to give and every act of generosity counts

The holiday season in the U.S. may be a new experience for immigrants and refugees who have just arrived in our country and community. Our tutors always do a fantastic job of helping their students learn about our traditions and help them feel included in the festivities.

The holidays are not about where someone is from; they are about sharing our time together and celebrating the holidays. It's a great opportunity to reach out to a new neighbor and welcome them into our community.

Over 1,200 student volunteers are serving more than 75 local community partners this semester in our Education & Youth, Animals & Environment, Human Services, and Health & Medical Services program placements. This time of year is critical for Holiday Sharing, a student-led initiative that raises money to provide food and gifts for families that could use a boost during the holiday season. In addition, CASH (Creating Assets Savings & Hope), a program that leads our free tax preparation assistance initiative, is ramping up for tax season by training student tax preparers for their IRS certifications and seeking sponsors to help fund the operation of sites around the community.

As the holidays approach, it’s time for our annual fundraising campaign. This year, we are focusing on purchasing a van with matching funds from a generous matching grant we received from the Perry Foundation.

People can make a donation on our website toward our Cultivate Community Engagement mobile! And, of course, we want to remind folks that we are always looking for volunteers to help with our monthly fruit and veggie taste tests in the Charlottesville City Schools and at garden workdays.

We are excited to announce we will be upgrading the entire lighting system in both our theaters thanks to a $165,000 capital improvement grant from the Perry Foundation and the generosity of several long-time Live Arts supporters. This investment enables us to lower energy costs, shrink our environmental footprint, and make it easier to attract the next generation of lighting designers and board operators. Our EXPECTATIONS season continues in February with musical KINKY BOOTS running February 16-March 10, the Virginia premiere of Donja R. Love’s FIREFLIES March 29-April 20, and our second annual WATERWORKS new works festival May 17-June 2. With registration for our youth summer camps set to open early January, there are endless opportunities to get involved in 2024.
