Founded in 1914, the CharlottesvilleAlbemarle SPCA has been the core of animal welfare in Charlottesville for over a century. We are proud of being one of the first shelters to reach No-Kill status in 2006 and of the work we have done since then to increase our lifesaving capabilities. In 2019, we achieved a 97% live-release-rate, the highest on record at the SPCA. Through adoptions, pet retention and transport, we are working toward ending animal homelessness in our community and beyond. Drs. Daniel and Virginia Flynn established the Georgetown Veterinary Hospital shortly after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine back in 1959. It has remained a family owned and operated practice since then… more than 50 years! We realize that people make the practice. Our dedicated staff is composed of compassionate animal health professionals, the majority of whom have been Georgetown Veterinary Hospital team members for decades.
Dr. Peppard completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia. After working in Italy for a couple years he earned his DVM from the Louisiana State School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Peppard has been with Georgetown Veterinary Hospital since 1997.
Mike Fietz, DVM Dr. Fietz earned his Bachelor of Science and his DVM from Cornell University in New York. After graduating in 2003, he joined Georgetown Veterinary Hospital, and has been with the practice since. He enjoys ultrasonography, soft tissue surgery, and dentistry.
Heidi Stone, DVM Dr. Stone graduated from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. After graduation, she spent time working in large/mixed animal medicine and general, small animal practice.

Founded in 1983, North Branch is an independent school for children ages 3 – 14 (pre-school through 8th grade) in Afton. North Branch offers academic challenge in a nurturing environment, stretching students without stressing them and/or their families. The school emphasizes hands-on learning and cooperation, while giving students a solid foundation in academics, the arts, and life skills. Situated on an 11-acre campus in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the campus includes three classroom buildings, a large outdoor playground, a Nature Trail and Outdoor Classroom, many gardens maintained by teachers and students, and fields and woods for students to enjoy. North Branch School currently enrolls over 120 students and has a faculty/staff of 19, including two alumni. Chef and Owner Shawn Hayes moved to Central Virginia in 1995 after meeting and marrying his wife Rita. They opened a small 30 seat café just hours after their daughter Elizabeth was born. I opened Hot Yoga Charlottesville in downtown Charlottesville on January 27, 2004. Yoga started off, for me, as a means of cross training an active athletic lifestyle. As David Brooks discusses in his recent article in the Atlantic, The Nuclear Family Was a Mistake, we've become too separated from one another and don't have easy access to friends, family, or a support structure. He mentions cohousing as an alternative to isolated nuclear families. In cohousing, everyone owns their private homes but intentionally plan to interact as a community. At Emerson Commons in Crozet, we have designed a pedestrian-oriented neighborhood where we cross paths with each other often. Neighbors can easily take the time to stop and chat. A beautiful club house allows us to have potlucks and neighborhood events together. Neighbors co-manage the community and meet each other that way. A beautiful pool, walking trails by a creek, orchard, raised bed gardens, and multiple play grounds give us further excuses to connect with our neighbors.

Volunteers from the Charlottesville Area Tree Stewards work on a multitude of projects and educational activities benefitting our community. In addition to teaching about trees, Tree Stewards work to improve the environment by planting trees, pruning and caring for trees in public places, removing invasive plants, documenting amazing specimens in our area, and offering young, native trees to plant.
