From the Grounds up Rain didn’t dampen the spirits of more than 3,000 graduates of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences during the University of Virginia’s 189th Final Exercises Saturday, May 19. The university conferred 7,072 degrees—4,238 baccalaureate degrees, 2,377 graduate degrees and 457 first professional degrees—during two graduation ceremonies (students in 10 UVA schools and the Data Science Institute walked the Lawn on Sunday).

Of those graduating with baccalaureate degrees, more than 400 were the first in their families to earn a college degree. University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan, who is retiring at the end of July, gave the commencement address both days, as is the tradition for outgoing presidents.

UVA alum Bruce Kothmann decided to challenge the university’s new speech policies when he read from the Bible on the steps of the Rotunda in early May. University police told Kothmann that was not allowed because he needed permission a week in advance and, in any case, the Rotunda is not one of UVA’s designated free speech zones for unaffiliated people—including alums.

Sex reassignment pioneer Dr. Milton Edgerton, a plastic surgeon who performed some of the first genital reconfigurations in the country in the 1960s at Johns Hopkins University and then in 1970 at the University of Virginia, died May 17 at age 96.

groups showed up strapped with assault rifles and wearing camouflage tactical gear, but the former have maintained that they independently attended the rally to serve as a buffer between the increasingly violent alt-right and counterprotest groups.

“It became so overwhelming that the only thing we could do was pick people up off the floor,” Curbelo told C-VILLE after the suit was filed last October.

The lawsuit, which names 25 groups and individuals, was filed by Georgetown University Law Center’s Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection last October on behalf of the city and several local businesses and neighborhood associations.

ix militia groups and their leaders named in a lawsuit aimed at preventing white supremacist and paramilitary organizations from showing their mugs around Charlottesville again have settled, agreeing they won’t engage in coordinated armed activity in any of the city’s future rallies or protests.

The latest round of defendants to bow out includes the Pennsylvania Light Foot Militia, New York Light Foot Militia, III% People’s Militia of Maryland, and their commanding officers: Christian Yingling, George Curbelo and Gary Sigler.

The city’s FY 2019 budget provides $225,000 for City Council’s own staff, including a researcher and spokesperson. A recent job listing on Indeed.com for the latter, officially called the “council outreach coordinator,” offers a starting pay between $21.36 and $31.25 per hour to “develop, implement and champion council community engagement initiatives,” among other tasks.

wo years ago, City Manager Maurice Jones announced the hiring of Al Thomas, Charlottesville’s first African-American police chief, who abruptly resigned 20 months later on December 18 following a scathing independent review of the handling of the violent events of August 11-12.

Jones introduced his latest police chief pick May 15: former George Washington University chief and Pittsburgh police commander RaShall Brackney. And with a petit protest by civil rights attorney Jeff Fogel in City Council chambers, Brackney got a small taste of the activities that have dominated much of local government over the past two years.

Brackney was chosen, says Jones, out of 169 applicants—more than twice the number the last time the job was open. All city councilors, who confirmed Brackney’s appointment at their May 21 meeting, were on hand to welcome the new chief.

Mayor Nikuyah Walker, who has criticized police profiling and mass incarceration, says she had difficulty “getting on the same page” as the rest of City Council when looking for a new chief, and was concerned about who would want the job after what happened last summer. She describes her interview with Brackney as “refreshing,” and says she’s “hopeful.”

Councilor Wes Bellamy notes that when he talked with Brackney, she said, “Community policing is somewhat of a buzzword,” and that she wants a “transformational style of policing.” He points out that

Brackney will be the city’s first AfricanAmerican female chief—although when talking to reporters afterward, she said she’s “multi-ethnic” and that she doesn’t think race or gender were reasons for her hiring, which “professionalism transcends.”

The need for a new style of police leadership was apparent from other councilors’ remarks. Kathy Galvin found “a marked difference” in Brackney’s delivery and wants to get back to “a feeling you can trust police.”

And Mike Signer says there are “increased demands for a new kind of policing” and protection of free speech in the face of the

But you can’t just throw yourself away, your wellness away, because you play violin in a band. It doesn’t make any sense to do that.”

Matthews adds, “I can’t say, ‘I can’t wait till he comes back,’ because I don’t know what’s going to happen. But right now being away is better for him. Nobody is happy about this situation. Except that we’re happy he can figure some stuff out. I hope he does. But I’m going to miss having that whirling-dervish Adonis-Muppet over there on my right. I know the audience is, too. But we can’t serve that desire.”

For years, Tinsley has hosted the Boyd Tinsley Clay Court Classic, a women’s invitational tennis tournament at the Boar’s Head Sports Club, which was most recently held in April.

“We’re just talking it over right now,” says Boar’s Head marketing and communications manager Joe Hanning about the future of the tournament. He says he’s “shocked like the rest of Charlottesville.”

“I’m truly hurt by the one-sided account that appeared on a blog about me yesterday,” says Tinsley in a statement. “I will defend myself against these false accusations. ...

These accusations have caused embarrassment for my family, my friends and my fans.

I will fight both in and out of court to repair the damage that has been done.”

Frost-Winn’s lawyer, Jason Hatch, responds to Tinsley’s denial in Rolling Stone: “We are disappointed in Mr. Tinsley’s complete lack of personal responsibility for his actions.”

His is not the first lawsuit filed against Tinsley. Getty Andrew Rothenberg, Tinsley’s former personal assistant, filed a $10 million suit in 2015 that alleged Tinsley’s “cult of personality has a dark side that Tinsley has gone to great lengths to hide,” and claimed Tinsley was a “sexual predator” who used gifts, jobs and access to other celebrities “to gain leverage over the people in his world which he currently calls Narnia.”

Rothenberg described eight unidentified people who had allegedly been victimized

by Tinsley. Rothenberg was convicted of embezzling from Tinsley between 2009 and 2012, sentenced to nine months in prison and ordered to pay $1.25 million in restitution. The lawsuit was thrown out.

“Everyone knew,” says a local familiar with the band who spoke only on the condition of anonymity. “There’s going to be other people coming out.” The source says rather than getting Tinsley help, those around him “enabled” his behavior.

“This was an open secret within the company,” says a former Red Light employee, who also spoke only on the condition of anonymity.

“The band was not aware of these allegations until they read about them yesterday in the media,” says DMB publicist Allison Elbi in a May 18 email.

In a May 14 interview in Vulture before the Consequence of Sound story came out, Matthews says, “I have a deep love for Boyd,

n a move that has Charlottesville and the music world reeling, the Dave Matthews Band parted ways with longtime violinist Boyd Tinsley, 54, late May 17 following an explosive story that detailed a lawsuit against Tinsley for alleged sexual assault, harassment and long-term grooming.

Tinsley has denied the allegations in an online music news site Consequence of Sound article and in the lawsuit.

He had previously announced he would not be touring with the band February 2, the same day an attorney for James FrostWinn filed a demand letter to settle his claims of assault and harassment. On Twitter, Tinsley said he needed a break to focus on his family and his health.

A statement from DMB says, “Though Boyd is no longer a member of the band, we are shocked by these disturbing allegations and we were not previously aware of them.”

Some find it hard to believe band members and Red Light Management knew nothing of Frost-Winn’s allegations, and social media lit up following the story.

“Of course they knew. The whole town has been calling it Fiddlegate for years,” says @arkSHOP on Twitter.

“A lot of the town knew,” says musician Jamie Dyer on Twitter. “I drew the line with Boyd in the early ’80s and he never messed with me again.”

Songwriter Lauren Hoffman writes on Facebook that three young men “separately confided their experiences to me” in the late ’90s.

Frost-Winn was 18 and homeless when he first met Tinsley in 2007. The two became friends, and in 2014, Frost-Winn joined Tinsley’s Crystal Garden band.

He filed a $9 million lawsuit May 17 in Washington state alleging Tinsley created a hostile work environment “where compliance with sex-based demands was tied to the band’s success,” Consequence of Sound reports.

Frost-Winn, a trumpeter, says Tinsley often requested his and band members’ dirty socks, and he describes waking to Tinsley masturbating beside him with his hand on Frost-Winn’s butt. Tinsley blamed the incident on a pill mix-up, according to court documents.

The two slowly became friends again with Tinsley bestowing gifts on the young man.

But he also began sending more sexually explicit texts. A screenshot of a March 18, 2016, text from Tinsley calls Frost-Winn “boner material” and says he’s masturbating to the thought of photos of Frost-Winn and suggests he shave his pubic hair for an upcoming photo shoot.

“You are the dirty pretty boy of the band,” says the alleged Tinsley text. “I have to sexu-

“dangers of extremism” that present challenges from “those who would terrorize us.”

Brackney stressed the “importance of setting a vision and tone for the community.”

And she says she’d gotten tough questions from the community and from the police rank and file, who were “not shy” about saying what they wanted from a new chief. “Law enforcement is at a crossroads right now,” she says, and can “reshape the narrative on how we engage the community.”

The new chief currently lives in Arlington, and asked for local neighborhood recommendations from the attendees at her debut.

She retired from GWU in January after fewer than three years heading the force.

While there, she was named in a federal lawsuit by a former student, who alleged Brackney violated Title IX policies when the university rescinded the student’s enrollment after a domestic dispute with her boyfriend at an Elliott School of International Affairs welcome event in 2016, according to the Hatchet, GWU’s student newspaper.

Brackney nearly rolled her eyes when asked about the suit, and said that had nothing to do with her decision to leave George Washington.

She also faced an investigation in Pittsburgh in 2007 when she picked up a friend who had plowed into three parked cars. According to the Post-Gazette, officers investigating the crash were disturbed by Brackney’s intervention. The district attorney called the incident “troubling,” but said he lacked evidence to file criminal charges.

The new chief was not deterred from taking the Charlottesville job after the city’s national notoriety following last summer’s deadly Unite the Right rally, and says she is more concerned that the city be able to tell its own story and “have its own conversations about the upcoming anniversary in ways it might not have been able to before.”

And while she’s read all 250-plus pages of the Heaphy report, the city-commissioned independent review of its handling of last summer’s hate rallies, she declined to judge the actions of her predecessor. “We have to make sure we embrace the recommendations,” she said.

Brackney says her first priority is to get to know the community. “If the first time I’m giving you my business card is during a crisis, then I’ve already failed.”

When she starts June 18, Brackney, 55, will earn $140,000. The salary of former chief Thomas was $134,509.

With more than 30 years of law enforcement experience, she sounds ready to tackle the new job. “I have stamina and grit. And I found the local organic juice bar.”

Fogel took the opportunity before the press conference to berate new city spokesperson Brian Wheeler for not providing notice that the special meeting was a press conference—”I sent out a notice this morning,” said Wheeler—and stood holding signs criticizing current police leadership.

“Fire Gary ‘Damn right I gassed them’ Pleasants,” read one of Fogel’s signs, referring to Deputy Chief Pleasants’ order to use tear gas at the July 8 KKK rally. “If he wouldn’t follow the leader then, why would he follow the leader now?” asked Fogel.

At another Fogel interjection, Bellamy put his fingers to his lips to shush the attorney.

“That’s a very small sacrifice compared to what Corey Long and Donald Blakney are facing, so it’s hard to complain,” says Martin.

“I’m getting the straight white guy treatment. ...I have a whole lot of privilege. It’s easier for me to do this than other people.”

Adele Stichel, a rising third-year law student who was at the library on the day of Martin’s arrest, is calling for UVA to rescind the no trespassing order against him.

“I remember being shocked that [Martin] had been arrested while Mr. Kessler had not,” she says. “I think what Eric did was very brave and helped to reveal a troubling attitude that I and others have often sensed from the UVA administration, which is that resistance to white supremacy is somehow a greater threat than white supremacy itself.”

Martin says other supporters—the majority of whom he doesn’t know, including parents of students—have reached out to check on him, thank him or offer to pay his legal feels. In a letter of support from 250 signatories across the country, including many professors and students at Fordham, he’s called an “exemplar of the kind of activist-theologian the academy (Fordham) is presently cultivating.”

Over the past year, Charlottesville has been ground zero for white supremacist action and counterprotest, and some critics say it would all go away if ignored.

“That’s an argument that pays no attention to facts or empirical data,” says Martin.

“That’s exactly what UVA tried to do, and clearly, eight months later, it did not go away.

It keeps coming to the heart of their campus and terrorizing their students.”

hen about 40 protesters gathered at the University of Virginia School of Law library in April to chase off Jason Kessler, one man was arrested—and it wasn’t the one who brought hundreds of torch-wielding white supremacists to Grounds last summer.

As Kessler sat doing legal research for his upcoming lawsuits in a room that wasn’t open to the public, it appeared to those who wanted him gone that the university had offered him a safe space. UVA law spokesperson Mary Wood now says Kessler was not given an office, and was being assisted by a law librarian in the librarian’s office.

But to clear up the confusion at the time, Eric Martin decided to study with Kessler, and was escorted out in handcuffs shortly thereafter.

“I just thought it would help clarify the status—does he have a private office or not?” says Martin. “And the second thing I thought was, ‘Hold up. They had eight months to protect their students by barring this white supremacist who brought people that maced and beat students and beat one of the librarians into a stroke.’”

Martin, a part-time Charlottesville resident who also lives in New York while teaching and working toward his Ph.D. at Fordham University, was reading The Rise and Fall of Apartheid as he sat with Kessler and was told by multiple people that he wasn’t allowed to be there.

One of those was Stephen Parr, the law school’s chief administrative officer, who brought a few law enforcement officers with him.

“The police were clearly waiting for him to make a decision,” says Martin, who adds that Parr told him he was trespassing and asked him to leave. The alleged trespasser who, among other things, teaches Christian

nonviolence, says he replied with something along the lines of, “That’s fine. I’m not going to. The students don’t feel safe and I’m going to stay here until Kessler leaves.”

Laughing, Martin says, “And then he had me arrested. I understood that it was possible when he said I was trespassing, but I didn’t think they’d be dumb enough to walk me out of there in cuffs and leave [Kessler] in there. They made their choice on who was the bigger threat at that table.”

Though Martin says some students were in tears, too afraid to attend their classes near the building that Kessler was holed up in, the university is following through with the trespassing charge. He’s scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing May 22, after C-VILLE goes to press, and says the hearing will be continued to a later date because he’ll be out of town.

Martin will be defended by Jeff Fogel, who has represented several other community activists, and says he will plead not guilty.

After being cuffed, escorted out of the library and taken to jail, Martin was banned from the university. Kessler was also later banned, which Martin says is a sign that he was correct in his peaceful protest of allowing the “white supremacist” access to a private room that day.

“I would imagine that this is extremely embarrassing to [UVA],” says Martin. “I can’t believe they’re pressing charges.”

The ban presents a problem for Martin, who has been using the law library to do research for his dissertation. At the time of his arrest, he had 20 books checked out and received an email from the library, which said he needed to return them, but couldn’t do so on campus. They arranged a meetup at the university police department, which Martin calls “high comedy.”

“T

ake your shoes off,” says Joshua Kwasi.

A delegation of 56 people, most representing Charlottesville, pause for a moment, eyes darting and sweeping the stone floor, glancing toward the sandy, exposed path before them.

“Why?” asks one member.

“Because this is sacred ground,” says Kwasi, the tour guide at Assin Manso, known as Slave River, in Ghana, Africa.

There is a silence heavier than the humidity of the rainforest as people slowly take off their shoes, then tentatively step toward the edge of the stone floor, hovering before plunging their feet onto the worn path.

The path is a sliver of the more-than-300-mile route on which captured Africans were marched, dragged and sometimes died as they were taken to the coast before being forced onto ships bound for the Americas. And now, barely 200 years since the enslaved previously walked the path, the delegation members slip their toes, then their feet, into the same sands, which have remained otherwise undisturbed and protected, “as a reminder to all of us, the lessons of history,” says Kwasi.

A natural tunnel of dark green shields the path from the sun; the sand is soft, the walls of thick brush and bamboo on either side feel protective.

“Here, you can see pineapple plants on the left side, every few feet. These are 400 years old. They were planted to show a path to escape, if possible—it leads away from the river, and to safety,” says Kwasi. Pineapple regrow each year, even after being harvested. They don’t look extraordinary, but on this path, the significance of their presence is enough to make visitors catch their breath: The pineapple plants were once beacons of hope, a last chance for those lucky enough to make a successful run for it.

After a few steps, nobody watches where they walk. Wildlife, rocks and sharp plants haven’t been on this path for a long while.

Low voices are muffled by the warm air, stifled beneath the canopy. It is difficult to see ahead, with a number of meandering turns. But at last there is a clearing, and an archway: a smooth white gate reading Last Bath in black letters. A delegation member grasps the side of the gate, gazing down the hill at what looks like a serene landscape: Two thin rivers, embracing at a fork in a bamboo grove, quietly ripple toward the western coast of Ghana, where it will meet the Atlantic.

“Those clumps of bamboo shoots are centuries old; imagine—each of those clumps,” says Kwasi, gesturing to half a dozen along the river banks, “once saw 30 to 40 enslaved persons shackled to them overnight.” Only the whispers of the rivers merging are heard for a moment. “This is site of the last bath. We call it that because after marching 300 miles, many had not bathed. They were covered in defecation, menstrual blood, vomit. ...They needed to be cleaned before auction,” says Kwasi.

One of the most emotionally powerful moments on the trip was the visit to Assin Manso—Slave River. The site has been preserved in its entirety since the slave trade began in the 15th century. The delegates walked barefoot on the sacred path to the site of the Last Bath, the final freshwater the enslaved stepped in before they were marched to auctions at the slave castles and put on ships. For every group that visits, a guide performs a ritual to invoke the ancestors and offer blessings and protection to all. Afterward, some delegates left messages on the Wall of Returned.

“Bath,” normally carrying a connotation of comfort, in the slave trade was as horrifying as every other aspect. “It was very violating and humiliating, especially for the women,” says Kwasi. The river was the last freshwater in Africa the enslaved stepped into before being imprisoned in the slave castles and taken to the ships. Many who rebelled or fought against molestation during a bath may have been drowned. Parents may have drowned their own children to release them from their fate, Kwasi says.

At the entrance to Assin Manso, Kwasi points to two headstones with the names Crystal and Samuel Carson.

“These are the only former slaves who have been repatriated to Ghana, and here they will rest, free forever,” says Kwasi. “One is Crystal, who was one of the first documented in Jamaica who starved herself to death; preferring death over enslavement under her master,” he says. Their remains were returned and reburied in Ghana in 1998. Every July 1, there is a celebration to honor their return.

Beyond their gravesite is a wall, a “memorial of returned”: It’s a place for descendants of the enslaved to write their

names and a message, if they choose. To the side is a small theater where the delegation watches a short film, Goodbye Uncle Tom. The graphic film shows a glimpse of the reality of the slave trade at the Last Bath, the auction and on the ships. Delegates grimace at scenes showing guards making the enslaved eat by forcing their mouths open with rusty tools and dumping gruel down their throats, or the methods in which they treated those with diarrhea.

The delegation is led down worn steps, past children carrying bundles of firewood, to the shore. Members are invited to step into the river. Some leave tokens, others hold hands, and many clutch their chest as they touch their fingers to the surface, feeling the silky water rush over their skin. Salty tears fall into the fresh, clear water. Several bow their heads.

The group is quiet as the guides perform “libations,” a ceremony of pouring special liquor into the river, thanking the ancestors for protection and welcoming the delegation to Assin Manso. Thunder rolls overhead as the last drop of alcohol hits the river.

“A Sister City relationship works best when there is a grassroots effort within the community,” says Terri Di Cintio, co-chair of Charlottesville Sister City Commission, about forming a partnership, of which Charlottesville has four. “It can take [several] years of back-and-forth exchanges, paperwork and official agreements between both municipal governments before a Sister City arrangement is established… it’s not an easy friendship that is simply ‘struck up.’

This trip was organized by the Charlottesville-Winneba Foundation; although it was a Sister City visit, it was not organized through the Sister City Commission. The delegation trip, therefore, was paid entirely through the foundation and by the delegates, and not the SCC, Charlottesville taxpayers or the city. Di Cintio says visits from Winneba to Charlottesville have been limited due to visa complications.

The foundation has sent a delegation to Winneba to explore, study and connect with the city and culture on five different occasions. The size and interest of this delegation—the largest that has ever visited—was spurred by the events of August 12 and the controversy surrounding the Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson statues: How does Ghana grapple with its past? What do Western Africans see when they look at relics of a dark past? Where does Charlottesville fit in with the slavery narrative?

that continues to impact people,” says Norris. “There are painful parts of our past, but opportunities for leaving a legacy. …I wish we could’ve brought thousands of people— we need more experiences like this.”

The trip itinerary included an exploration of Winneba and the market, a visit to Cape Coast and Elmina slave castles, the Assin Manso River and Kakum National Forest, along with sites that Charlottesville and UVA support through initiatives. Throughout the week, diplomatic visits with Winneba’s City Hall leaders, the University of Education’s chancellor and board and Central Ghana’s prime minister and related dignitaries were arranged.

And, in the middle of the trip, May 4 and 5, was the annual Aboakyer Festival, in which the region’s tribes and strongest male warriors venture out into the bush to catch a deer by hand, as part of a sacred ritual overseen by the region’s tribal chiefs and leaders.

The foundation was built on the friendship between Ghana native and Charlottesville resident Nana Ghartey and Norris in 2009. Norris helms the foundation, a nonprofit that connects the cities through efforts and initiatives that extend beyond the standard Sister City stipulations laid out by the Sister City Commission, which promotes understanding and fosters relationships in Charlottesville through cultural, educational and humanitarian activities.

t the University of Education in Winneba on the second day of the trip, the delegation hears a lecture on the transatlantic slave trade from professor Eric Sakyu Nketiah, who discusses the extent of the global slave trade.

“One of the triggers for the Americas getting involved in the trade was due to the exhaustion and deaths of the Native American slaves; they needed the manual labor as they were industrializing,” says Nketiah. The economic expansion of Europe and the New World drove Portugal south into Africa, where tribes and leaders were already engaged in slave trades across the African continent, and with Greece, India and Egypt. Historians estimate that 15 million enslaved Africans were taken to the Americas alone.

As a coastal city, Ghana was at the heart of the trade, and was targeted by the Dutch, Danish, Portuguese and British for colonization. Roughly 80 to 90 percent of all enslaved Africans came in and out of Ghana, many having been captured from surrounding countries, most prominently Nigeria, the Congo and Burkina Faso.

And an institutionalized form of slavery existed in Africa, before the Atlantic trade began. Ato Ashun, a guide at Elmina Castle, says, “They were considered servants, and were indentured due to crime, debt, prisoners of war, pawns or other circumstances. They could buy or marry their way out,” he says. “It is not the same degree or treatment as when the Europeans came to enslave the peoples.”

There was a system of “managerial ability,” which meant servants could, with time and effort, become the head of house and marry into the system, and become royalty. “In Ghana, there are so many chiefs whose ancestors were not royal, but became so through hard work,” says Ashun. “This was not possible at the plantations in North America.”

Europeans began participating in the slave trade in 1410, setting off a 400-year-long transatlantic trade, and a series of inter-tribal wars in Africa, with a domino effect of weapon smuggling, family betrayal and capturing individuals for trade.

In 1471, Don Diego from Portugal set off to Ghana to build the first slave castle. “It was the first instance in which a chief sold land legally to Portugal; he had been hesitant due to cultural differences,” says Ashun. “The Portuguese promised to use the castles for materials and other imports; they did not follow that promise.”

“Most coastal countries and tribes participated in the trade,” says Nketiah. “It wasn’t until 1526 that King Nzinga Mbemba of the Congo protested and voiced opposition to the trade.”

His voice was drowned out by the overwhelming global demand for slave labor, and of other leaders of African tribes and nations, as the Industrial Revolution spurred the urgency for palm and groundnut oil consumption and growth of other cash crops, including tobacco and cotton.

“There is an outright denial of truth of our history of slavery,” says Dr. Clifton Latting, a Birmingham, Alabama, resident who witnessed and participated in the civil rights movement in the ’60s and ’70s, and a delegation member.

“My history begins with slavery. School taught me that Africa was nothing but animals and wild people swinging through rainforests. It is an atrocity that we need to confront, and everyone needs to face the truth of our country.”

espite an ocean between them, Winneba and Charlottesville are sisters through commonality (their populations and the size of the cities are comparable), and several initiatives that tie them together. After becoming sister cities in 2010, they have had to meet certain requirements in order to maintain the friendship, as established by the Sister City Commission.

Centuries prior, Winneba had been home to some of the first peoples in Ghana—during a migration, Northern Africans from the Sahara came south seeking water, and many settled alongside the lagoon at the outskirts of the main city.

Today, the lagoon and the fishing village that stands where one of the original villages once stood, Akosua Villa, is a World Heritage Site, stretching far into the bush and toward the distant hills. The site is maintained in part by the efforts of the University of Virginia Center for Cultural Landscapes

rom Slave River, it is a 31-mile journey to the coast; in Ghana, that means to either Elmina Castle or Cape Coast Castle—they are within a 15-minute drive of each other.

Pulling into Cape Coast on the third day, delegation members notice the resemblance to European architecture; the structures are starkly different from the landscape of the other cities they have traveled through, which typically have smaller, one-room buildings and structures made of tin roofs and mixed materials for walls. These buildings have smooth stone walls, archways, tiles for roofing, balconies and windows with shutters.

The bustling energy of the coastal town is also in contrast with the more laid-back feeling of towns further away.

Rounding a corner, Cape Coast Castle comes into view: A white stone building streaked with black, rust surrounding window frames, waves grabbing at the sides that dip below sea level. Canons point at the bus windows as it makes another turn and pulls up to the bridge.

“The way waves break on the walls at Cape Coast…there is a thunderous sound as you enter the courtyard. A wave smacked the castle when we walked in, and it went right through our bodies, giving us chills,” says Brandon Dillard, manager of special programs at the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello. “Many people here, even for the last moments of their lives, may have heard those and felt those reverberate in their skin.”

A guide shows the delegation a plaque revealed when President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama visited Cape Coast Castle in 2009. Beside it stands the entrance to the dungeons for enslaved men. There is a steep slope down; many walk tenderly through the darkness, gripping someone’s had for support or running their hands along the wall.

It is near pitch-black in the dungeon. The entrances have low arches, beckoning one to duck, but the ceiling opens up higher once inside. At the top of one corner is a small vent of air—most dungeons have no vent or windows of any kind.

The group is made up on about 30 people. It’s crowded, and within moments, the heat is unbearable, making people shift with discomfort, some wiping their brow. There is a faint stench, of air trapped below for years upon years, and something else not quite identifiable.

“One thousand men were put in here at any one time, for 400 years. Many stayed up to three months in one of these dungeons,” he says.

“This floor seems smooth, blackened and soft,” says the guide, gesturing to everyone’s feet. “There is brick, deep down, but this blackness is nearly a foot thick of fossilized feces, blood, tissue, bodily fluids, hair, from centuries and millions of enslaved held here.”

His words are a punch to the gut, and the smell suddenly becomes apparent.

Along the walls and covering parts of the floor are cement heads, sculpted with faces depicting pain, horror, fright.

at the School of Architecture. The program researches and provides feedback for how the region can preserve and protect the waters, with the influx of pollution. It has been predicted that within 20 years, “climate change will change, or erase, this [body of water] completely,” says a local guide.

The delegation toured the local area Trauma and Specialist Hospital, which has a partnership with UVA Health System. Annually, through the Charlottesville-Winneba Foundation, in an initiative started by the late Holly Edwards, a large shipment container of medical equipment, books and resources for patient care is donated from UVA to the Winneba hospital. The sprawling hospital campus has paintings on the walls, and nurses dressed in rich green uniforms push carts into rooms. There is no AC, but fans whir overhead in each patient care room. In the pediatric center, paintings of Disney characters adorn the walls. Karen Ellis-Wilkins, resident chaplain at UVA Health System, blessed the infants and newborns at the center, and brought suitcases full of hygienic and care items to donate to the hospital.

The doctors welcomed the delegation, and spoke of the benefits of the relationship.

“We are able to keep this hospital great because of you… the bond with UVA gives us an opportunity to provide care and facilities to mankind of Winneba,” says the head doctor, Dr. Richard Anongura. Walker explained the delegation’s mission was to explore the origins of slavery, and visit the establishments of Charlottesville’s sister city.

“We are growing to overcome [slavery],” says Anongura.

“It is so tough to understand. …I share your emotions. We need to keep collaborating to move forward; you cannot sit in one place and despair.”

Across the street is a secondary school that Walker hopes will establish a connection and pen pal program with Charlottesville High School, to exchange ideas.

Another Winneba initiative is the Helen Project, of which Walker served as first vice president. “This initiative was started by a delegate from a previous trip,” says Norris. “It’s an example of an ordinary citizen in Charlottesville coming up with something extraordinary out of one these journeys to Ghana.”

The project gives grandmothers the resources and finances to run their own businesses and take care of orphans.

“I haven’t been involved in the last year since campaigning, but I’m really interested in helping out with their cause through whatever means necessary,” says Walker.

Many delegates found inspiring the matriarchal structure of the city; most of the entrepreneurs and business owners were women while the men were typically seen fishing or doing construction work.

“Even the children are entrepreneurs. Each family has a specific commodity, but even when there are competitors, they work as a team, working together by any means to survive and help each other out to survive,” says delegate Tanesha Hudson. “We do not have that in Charlottesville, but if we did, we would be unstoppable.”

that is blindfolded. “This shows how many of them left this dungeon—blind, and not knowing where they were going next.”

He is quiet for a moment as the delegation looks around the dungeon. A wave breaks the silence, and the guide beckons the group forward to the female dungeon—much smaller, and divided into sections. Both women and children were housed in the same dungeon, and some women gave birth while imprisoned.

“Not surprisingly, the babies died very shortly…and their bodies tossed into the sea,” says the guide.

Flowers and gifts in heart shapes are left alongside 250 sculpted heads. The hairstyles are striking, distinct and unique for each woman. “They reveal what tribes they may have come from…some hair is not all of the way finished, to show the manner in which they were captured: They could have been in the middle of getting their hair done,” says the guide.

Just beyond the female dungeons is a glimmer of light.

The sound of the ocean is louder.

A flood of light pours in from the Door of No Return, an icon at each castle. “The last point every enslaved person in Africa traveled through before going to the Americas,” says the guide.

He lets each delegate go through the door, out into the port, where hundreds of small fishing boats are lined up.

Young boys are outside, selling art and trinkets to tourists.

The guide beckons everyone back through the door. “You are the lucky ones. Everyone who went through that door never came back through, but you did,” he says.

The delegation visits the second slave castle on the second to last day of the trip, just as the golden hour arrives. The coastline is awash in gold, palm trees silhouettes against the yellow sky. In the distance, a darkened, sprawling figure surrounded by jagged rocks sits on a jutting peninsula: Elmina Castle.

“History not memorized or learned from is doomed to be repeated,” says guide Ato Ashun at the entrance to the world’s largest and oldest slave castle. “This is not a place to visit, but a place to correct.”

There is a heavier feeling at Elmina than at Cape Coast.

The courtyard is more open, but something sinister lingers on the once-white walls streaked with gray. A moat void of any water today surrounds the castle. The ocean is turbulent, but the high walls muffle the sounds of the sea.

In the courtyard, Ashun explains that slaves who rebelled were beaten in front of the other prisoners as a warning. “And if they were especially difficult, they were put in the cell of the condemned; beaten, then thrown in total darkness and without air, food or water—there they stayed until they died.”

There are centuries-old carvings in the cell, shaped like a handprint. “We aren’t sure if they are tallies of how long prisoners lasted…or formed by those who clawed at the walls desperate to escape,” says Ashun.

Winding around the castle, Ashun shows the delegation the female dungeons. They are more open than previously viewed cells, at first a seemingly welcome sight, until Ashun says, “There are no doors, just bars, so the governors and soldiers can pick who they want, then rape them as they please.” When an enslaved female was assigned as a mistress to a governor at the castle, she would often stay longer, until after she gave birth; the child would be raised apart from her, and she would eventually be killed and replaced, or sent on a ship bound for the New World. Often, though, women died in childbirth.

“They were given no help during menstruation or childbirth. They were often humiliated or ‘tested’ by soldiers in front of the other women…and those who could not be tamed were strung up and forced to stand for days, chained to cannonballs and refused food and water,” says Ashun.

The male dungeons are bleak, windowless, without ventilation, void of humanity. In the corner, a small door opens. Elmina’s Door of No Return faces a solitary dock for a boat to pull up.

Each delegate takes a moment to pause in the doorway, put their hands on the sides and step through, before coming back into the darkness and ducking through to the main dungeon.

The castles today stand as reminders to the world. They are not glorified. They are not cleaned. They are, simply, what they are: Black marks on history, encased in white walls.

A courtyard in the center of the castles was often a place of public torture and humiliation for the enslaved. Beneath the cobblestone and brick were the dungeons, separating males and females. Each had a route to the Door of No Return that led the enslaved to boats that took them to the Americas, never to return to their homeland.

he sun has set on the western coast of Africa. The waves play at the shore near the Windy Beach Lodge, lapping at the base of palm trees surrounding the patio where dinner is served.

Polite words of thanks are exchanged, as well as gifts, between the mayors of both cities and distinguished guests.

“We thought, ‘Is it a good idea to study the origins of slavery?’” says Nana Ghartey. “We thought, ‘No, we couldn’t do it.’ But look, we have had one of the most successful trips ever organized.”

“Because of the political climate, there is fighting and heated discussions [in Charlottesville]… but I haven’t done that here,” says Walker. “I know there has been some healing that I’ve needed after a tough campaign year and my first three months [in office]. I want to thank everyone for making this journey. Hopefully the relationships we build here will go far…and I hope we go home and work on how we will connect this experience [to the August events].”

Drinks are raised. The ocean stirs in the distance. A quarter moon, full at the beginning of the week, hangs low in the sky, glowing yellow. Lightning strikes the horizon; high above, stars peek through streaks of clouds. A gentle breeze brings relief from the heat, as delegates hug and shake hands with Winneba citizens, wishing each other well.

As the evening winds down, Anderson stands to deliver a poem she wrote, encapsulating her experience, her voice ringing out across the beach: “When the stories of our ancestors are echoed over and over and over, / My soul will be nurtured, my spirit rejuvenated, my heart will ignite and / My feet will align in your pathways. / It is then that I will walk in the footprint of your history, then sings my soul.”

“[The river] felt very heavy. It rotates a lot in my mind with other thoughts,” says Walker. “It will take a while to process. We’ve been going every day, all day—I’m still thinking about it all. But I’m learning. Just learning—and that’s a positive, when you can go somewhere and learn something.”

A few people have started making connections to the tumultuous events of August 12.

“1924 was an important year: Monticello started giving tours while Virginia was a segregated state, the KKK reconvened in Charlottesville and the statues of Confederate leaders went up,” says Monticello’s Brandon Dillard. “People have this notion that everything was segregated 200 years ago... but actually, that’s the legacy of the post-Civil War era.”

Dillard and Niya Bates, public historian of slavery and African-American life at Monticello, want to push visitors to the presidential home into confronting topics such as rape, consent, power and complicity surrounding slavery.

“There is such emotional power at Cape Coast, and that is something for years we have been advocating for at Monticello,” Dillard says. “They run the gambit of knowing full well that those kinds of horrors happened there, that people suffered, and we want people who visit there to understand and feel it. We have some projects coming up that we will focus on reflection and contemplation. We will focus on systemic racism and what we can do today to move forward.”

For many, there is a feeling of hope, despite the horrors they came face-to-face with.

“And in the midst of all of it, there is a level of pride that I feel, because I come from resilient stock,” says Anderson.

“Everything done to them was meant to break them down, deny them, physically and mentally enslave them, but despite

all of this, I look and see that we have had a black president— we still managed to rise. It gives me hope today. They fought since the first day they came to America, and we are still fighting today—it is in my DNA.”

“I thought that by coming here, it would give me a better sense of the struggle that Africans went through when they were captured and enslaved, and while it has given me a clear depiction of exactly what it was like…it has been really hard…in conversations I have been having, whether it’s statutes or race—slavery is the root of all of it,” says delegation member Myra Anderson.

On the final evening, the delegation held a closed-door reflection on its experience. Smaller groups discussed what they witnessed, experienced, felt and how it related to Charlottesville, August 12 and nationwide issues of race relations.

“Based on the discussions with the group, I’m not sure [if we’re ready to have] those hard conversations, but those are the hard ones we need to have,” says Walker. “People are saying they feel they need to walk on eggshells. They shouldn’t have to feel that they are walking on eggshells. If you keep something to yourself and think it’s okay, it’s not—there is no change that happens from that.”

For many African-American delegates, it was the first substantial number of days in a row in which they said they did not experience racism, discrimination or micro-aggressions in day-to-day activities.

“They made me value the little things more: embracing family, not be so busy, love one another. This is the first week I have been able to breathe easy because I was not discriminated against. They are rich in spirit and rich in culture,” says Hudson.

“When I took time off, I told everyone, ‘I’m going home.’”

Anderson says, “When you have a clear understanding of where you came from, you have a clearer idea of where you are going.”

Some delegates said they need more time to process and reflect on the experience.

“There is no way you will digest everything in just 10 days, but take it all with you when you go home,” says delegate Marie Poole, who has previously traveled with other Winneba delegations.

Master mandolinists Danny Knicely and Jack Dunlap (above) first connected when Knicely apprenticed Dunlap through the Virginia Folklife Program in 2015. A year later, the duo recorded its first album, Chop, Shred & Split, which received a Washington Area Music Award for best bluegrass recording. The two maestros have pushed the boundaries of their instruments in individual ways, but when they get together to perform— whether onstage or around a campfire— musical chemistry creates what they like to call “mandolin fireworks.” $12-15, 7:30pm. In the 50 years since The Oratorio Society of Virginia made its debut with a performance of Handel’s Messiah in the auditorium of Albemarle High School, the group has infused choral excellence into the community through its vast repertoire, high-caliber singers and annual holiday performances. In looking to commemorate the group’s half-century mark, Music Director Michael Slon became inspired by the mural on West Main Street featuring Rita Dove’s poem “Testimonial.” He commissioned Virginia composer Adolphus Hailstork to set it to music, which resulted in The World Called, to be showcased at OSVA’s gala celebration concert. “Hopefully this musical work—along with the poem and mural—will become art for our community,” says Slon. $10-35, 7pm. Free Union, led by Michael Coleman and Rob Dunnenberger, seeks unity in Charlottesville on its new, self-titled EP.

soul-R&B-pop sound, even while not being present at every performance.

Free Union stands for collaboration, for “positivity and community,” says Dunnenberger. It’s there in the sheer act of playing music that’s been collectively written, and it’s in both the musical and lyrical content of those songs too.

“While we present something lyrically, we also play music that sounds good, has a groove that you can move to. But we’re also trying to present ideas on top of that, that get you prepared for change, or wanting change,” says Dunnenberger.

You might get lost in the music, adds Coleman, but at some point, there’s going to be “a line that’s going to wake you the fuck up.” Perhaps it’s one of the lines from “Free World”: “Elaborate illusion / Is that what you meant when you said everyone’s included?” or “Watch what you do and where you step, they’re listening / Watch where you go and who you meet, they’re judging. / And if it’s all a dream, then why am I not awake?”

It’s “showing Charlottesville a mirror of itself,” says Dunnenberger of Free Union’s music, as it asks us all to take a long, hard look at our shared reflection and see the ugliness, the beauty.

Free Union also asks Charlottesville to take a look at what’s present—and what’s absent—musically. Free Union isn’t your run-of-the-mill energetic singer-songwriter stuff that people have come to expect from a place where the specter of the Dave Mat-

thews Band hangs over just about every stage in town. Free Union combines soul and R&B with catchy pop sensibilities and a funk-ish groove, and while the music sounds familiar—it’s also fresh growth for Charlottesville’s musical landscape.

In “recognizing multiple perspectives lyrically and stylistically,” the collective can inspire change in a variety of ways, says

Dunnenberger. Playing and “listening to these tunes makes me want to go out and do something bigger than myself, and I hope for other people, it brings that same emotion.” He says Free Union’s “Survivor” gets him particularly excited for that: “Maybe I will be the one to change the world / and if I can, you can too. / You and I will be the ones to risk it all, / because it’s who we are,” the song goes.

None of this is to say that Free Union has all the answers—Coleman acknowledges this outright. “We’re posing questions; we’re figuring this out at the same time as everyone else,” he says.

But what the collective’s emphasis on collaboration and communication does promote is “the idea that we can all work together to make something beautiful,” says Coleman, “whether it’s music, or art, or this town.”

ast summer, Michael Coleman had a realization about the power of music.

The night of August 12—after 24 hours of terror and chaos that included a torch-lit march led by white supremacists and the Unite the Right rally that left three people dead and dozens of community members and activists injured—Coleman took to Facebook Live to play a song to friends and followers.

He’d written “Good Day to Cry” in the months leading up to the 2016 presidential election, downtrodden by the polarization of the United States, by the hatred, the anger and the deepening divisions among people. Coleman began to wonder, “What happened to all of the good things that made us [as a country] who we are, in terms of being welcoming and being understanding of differences?”

But on that rainy August night, Coleman says the song evolved in its meaning. It was no longer about the United States; “it was specifically about Charlottesville,” a song for “realizing that, as a city, we’re pretty broken.

And it’s just calling it out in the hopes that we’ll start a discussion about it,” he says.

What’s more, the responses that the song received made Coleman see the ways in which music can “shape opinion, facilitate discussion” or make people “forget about anything else,” if just for a few minutes, he says.

“If I could push a little more, maybe we’d come out as equal,” Coleman sang. “’Cause love is not dead, it’s just missing all of the people.”

“Good Day to Cry” became the closing track on a recently released five-song EP that Coleman—who played drums in local folk acts The Hill & Wood and Nettles before picking up guitar and lead vocals for his eponymous soul-rock act The Michael Coleman Band—recorded with the musical collective Free Union.

The group celebrates the record’s release with a show at The Southern Café & Music Hall on Friday.

Coleman sings and plays rhythm guitar in the new collective, which he leads alongside drummer Rob Dunnenberger, who has supported various other artists in town, including Devon Sproule, Post Sixty Five, Dillingham, David Wax Museum and The Michael Coleman Band. Dion still lands in the space between irony and sincerity that only Reynolds can capture. The two things that Deadpool 2 can’t overcome in the end are the excessive reliance on meta jokes—the initial mention of how much money the first one made is fine, but it’s not an endless gold mine—and it feels engineered to set up the next installment. The former is frustrating, as the ratio of original to meta gags approaches half; the latter is forgivable but indicative of the fact that this is ultimately a conventional movie with anarchic tendencies that is preceded by one that truly tore up every rule in its way.

Still good, still worth your time, but probably not worth a rewatch.

ith Deadpool 2, the deconstruction becomes the norm. That’s not necessarily a bad thing given how bloated and redundant the X-Men franchise has become, and how terrifically its predecessor broke every taboo while delivering a solid film with a real story of its own.

But how do you skewer yourself when you’ve become the new template? The merc with a mouth sure tries, with a level of self-referential jokes, moments of breaking the fourth wall and meta commentary on an unprecedented level for a movie of this scale—a lot of it is truly hilarious stuff. But no matter how anarchic it may seem or merciless it is against other franchises, the thrill of having no idea what might happen is deadened when it becomes a surprisingly standard setup for its sequel, the forthcoming X-Factor.

(If I may have a meta moment of my own: Does this sound too negative? It’s not supposed to, but that’s what happens when something you love is followed by something you only like.)

Deadpool 2 opens with Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), unable to be killed by conventional means, attempting to blow himself to pieces after suffering an unspeakable tragedy in what has already been a difficult life. When this fails, he is taken in by Colos-

sus (Stefan Kapičić) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and given a new lease on life as an X-Men trainee. Disaster after disaster follows before he discovers what he must do to truly move on while potentially sacrificing his own future.

Russell (Julian Dennison) is a troubled and abused teen whose ability to shoot fire aid him in his goal of revenge, but Wade struggles to put him on the right path, away from a life of killing before it’s too late. Along the way, Wade enlists the help of Domino (Zazie Beetz), whose mutant power of being incredibly lucky is at first dubious until it is invaluable. They are also joined by Cable (Josh Brolin), a soldier from the future who wants to prevent an impending tragedy by any means necessary.

Taking over for Tim Miller is David Leitch, a director with serious credentials when it comes to negotiating different tones while delivering a solid action experience (Atomic Blonde, John Wick). His visual flair and reverence for every set piece is on full display, which is one way Deadpool 2 is superior to the first film. The jokes are spread farther apart but land with no less impact. The writing is clever, and the pathology of Wade’s reliance on humor as a coping mechanism— the trait that first brought him and Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) together so effectively— remains the character’s best feature.

Brown-Douglas opened her on-site eatery on May 12, but she’s been cooking in Charlottesville for years. She started off with UVA Dining and eventually began selling fried chicken at the Sunshine Mini Mart on Cherry Avenue. The chicken sold well, and she says that’s when she realized she could be a caterer.

She took business classes at Piedmont Virginia Community College, signed up for the Community Investment Collaborative program and started her business, JBD Catering & Events.

She began catering for Piedmont Housing Alliance meetings and events and for concessions at Meade and Booker T. Washington parks, all while working out of shared kitch-

ens—affordable kitchens are hard to come by (and expensive to maintain). The Hinton Avenue spot just happened to open up as she looked for her own kitchen.

But that’s not all. Inspired by her late mother, a longtime Charlottesville Parks and Recreation employee who for years boxed up Sunday dinner leftovers to feed children in after school and summer care programs, Brown-Douglas cooks for local kids’ programs, such as the Charlottesville and Culpeper KEYS academies and, two nights a week, for a dinner program at the Friendship Court Apartments.

So while Brown-Douglas believes that Charlottesville’s food and restaurant scene has long needed an eat-in place that offers the promise of a Sunday family meal—familiar food lovingly prepared—and she’s stepping up to fill that need, she says she’ll “never, ever change” the catering aspect of her business, even when her shop gains more customers in time. That’s where her heart is.

In the parking lot, a young man sits in his SUV, engine running and air-conditioning blasting, digging into a clamshell container holding a JBD Mobile Catering & Events fried catfish dinner.

“He couldn’t even wait till he got home,” says BrownDouglas, visibly delighted. He’s not the only one to react this way to the catfish, she says, before wondering out loud what it must be about the dish that’s been driving her customers wild since she opened the doors to JBD Mobile Catering & Events’ brick-and-mortar location at 816 Hinton Ave. in Belmont two weekends ago. “I don’t use a lot of seasoning,” she says, “but I do cook with love.”

Love is what got Brown-Douglas, a lifelong Charlottesville resident, into food in the first place. Her grandmother cooked huge Sunday dinners not just for their family but for anyone who wanted a meal and some company. “She didn’t care who you were, you were invited to have a hot meal at her table,” says Brown-Douglas. Her grandmother’s greens were “to die for,” and nobody could wait until Sunday dinner to eat them—she and other kids in the family snuck into the refrigerator while their grandmother was at church.

Brown-Douglas now offers those same greens—kale and collards—on her menu, visible on the wall to the right of the counter that on this particular day (the Monday after Mother’s Day) is crowded by cards, a colorful bouquet of flowers and a large purple “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mylar balloon, given to Brown-Douglas by her children.

The menu, written in black and red dry erase marker on a white board, is broken up into sections: chicken (fried, gizzards, livers, tenders, etc.), drinks (soft drinks, water), dinners (chicken, whiting, catfish, pork ribs, chitterling and more, all served with two sides), desserts (cheesecake), sides (collards, kale, mac ’n’ cheese, sweet potatoes, etc.), salads. In blue, she’s written “Have a good day!” “You are loved!” and “Enjoy!” and drawn a few chubby hearts to accompany each note.

Most dishes are family recipes—including the catfish, her grandfather’s favorite—and she’ll offer rotating daily specials of longtime family favorites. Her prices are rea-

Finally, we walked through the gates. As part of the Smithsonian, the zoo is free and you can stroll right in (as, it seems, many local residents often do). The zoo is laid out along one main walkway, with themed side loops like Asia Trail and America Trail, and there’s no need to consult much with a map; if you go with the flow, you’ll hit all the high points. On the way in we looked at an extensive schedule of daily programs—zookeeper chats and feeding demos and the like—but decided just to keep it simple and look at animals.

At first, that seemed difficult; the sloth bear, clouded leopard and small-clawed otter all proved elusive and the dreaded word “boring” arose once or twice. But then we found the panda exhibit and were entranced to see a panda climbing trees and then rolling over on its back, drawing awwws from a large crowd of humans. Immediately afterward, we spotted elephants, and the zoo began to feel more than worthwhile.

We ended up staying nearly five hours. Highlights included the indoor portion of the elephant exhibit (where workers tossed treats to animals standing not 15 feet away from us), a friendly spoonbill bird in the Amazonia exhibit, underwater views of swimming sea lions and—let’s not

forget—a short break for Dippin’ Dots, a snack the girls found both tasty and hilarious.

Every time I suspected we were coming down with zoo fatigue, something rescued us. The zoo path would deliver us to a carousel, or we’d discover an exhibit about elephant dung, and the kids would be revived. Honestly, you’d think the place had been designed for families.

After eating a picnic dinner I’d been hoofing all day in my backpack, it was time to make our exit. There was still more to see (we never even set foot in the Reptile House!), but at some point a parent has to get out in front of the looming energy crash—her kids’ and her own. The reptiles will be there another day.

And so, undoubtedly, will the megachain coffeeshop right across the street from the zoo exit. I slipped in there for a cuppa just before closing, and that’s how we all made it safely home that night.

efore I tell you all about taking your kids on a day trip to Washington, D.C.—one of the best destinations there is—I’ll admit right upfront that such a trip is exhausting. But here’s my secret for making it exhilarating too: Leave your car outside the city and ride the Metro in.

It’ll break up the trip, hugely simplify parking and let the kids escape their car seats. In other words, it makes travel time part of the adventure.

Obviously, an early start is recommended. I do not pretend to fully grok the scope of D.C. rush hour, but I can say this: Leave home early enough to arrive at Franconia-Springfield Metro Station (off I-95, south of the city) around 10:30am, and you should miss the traffic. Or just go on a weekend.

Why Franconia? Well, the drive there—through Gordonsville and Orange—is ultra-scenic, and the parking garage is enormous and cheap ($9 for the day). True, the last 40 miles on I-95 feel tedious; perhaps a surprise audiobook, or just some cookies, would help everybody’s attitude.

On my last trip with my two daughters, as usual, the Metro ride was half the attraction. My country girls, ages 5 and 7, get excited just to ride escalators to the train platform, and the older one enjoyed following the signage in Metro stations and being responsible for her own Metro card.

We saw a plane taking off from Reagan National and spotted Canada geese on the Potomac.

While planning the day, we’d decided to skip the multitude of destinations on the National Mall and check out the National Zoo. But we had to stop off first at our favorite place in Chinatown, New Big Wong—a no-frills Chinese joint with tanks of eels and lobsters in the back. My girls love those, and I love that we can all lunch for under 20 bucks.

Another short train ride, and we found ourselves walking to the zoo entrance. I was reminded that for kids, the journey is everything. They got interested in Russian nesting dolls in a store window, the view of Rock Creek Park from the Taft Bridge, the fountain outside the Art-Deco Kennedy-Warren apartment building. …In short, we weren’t in a rush and that was all to the good.

(Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Ancient civilizations waged war constantly. From Mesopotamia to China to Africa, groups of people rarely went very long without fighting other groups of people. There was one exception: the Harappan culture that thrived for about 2,000 years in the Indus River Valley, which in the present day stretches through Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. Archaeologists have found little evidence of warfare there.

Signs of mass destruction and heavy armaments are non-existent. Art from that era and area does not depict military conflict.

One conclusion we might be tempted to draw from this data is that human beings are not inherently combative and violent. In any case, I want to use the Harappan civilization’s extended time of peace as a metaphor for your life in the next eight weeks. I believe (and hope!) you’re entering into a phase of very low conflict.

Healthy men and women aged 18-35 needed for study on the effect of high blood sugar on blood vessels. Subjects must be non-smokers, normal weight and not taking any medications. Study requires 1 screening visit of 1 hour and 4 ten hour admissions in UVA’s Clinical Research Unit.

Compensation is $1,000. Principal Investigator: Eugene Barrett, MD, PhD.

Seeking men and women, ages 21-75, diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) to determine if the drug AZD4017 reduces liver fat and liver fibrosis in people with NAFLD or NASH as compared to placebo. The study will involve up to 8 visits to the UVA Clinical Research Units. All tests and drugs will be paid for by the study. Compensation is up to $1,200. Principal Investigator: Rita Basu, MD.
