This year’s race, hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville and the Charlottesville Track Club, begins on July 2 and costs $30. “My 4th of July experience has been enriched over the years, thanks to this wonderful community event” says Mark Lorenzoni, co-owner of Ragged Mountain Running and Walking Shop. Starting at Hollymead Elementary School the course continues onto Powell Creek Drive, Shadybrook Trail, Turnberry Circle, back to Shadybrook Trail, onto N. English Oaks Circle, Kendalwood Lane, Ashwood Blvd, and back onto Powell Creek Drive to Hollymead Elementary School.

Monticello Welcomes New Citizens Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello outside of Charlottesville will mark the 246th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and welcome more than 50 new American citizens at its 60th annual Independence Day Celebration and Naturalization Ceremony Monday, July 4. This year’s keynote speaker will be Piedmont Virginia Community College president Frank Friedman. Celebrants will also enjoy music from the Charlottesville Band and Charlottesville Opera, and free root beer floats and kid’s activities on the West Lawn after the ceremony. Parking will be available at Piedmont Virginia Community College, and shuttles from the parking lot to Monticello will run throughout the morning. Registration for timed shuttles is required and is available online. Monticello will also livestream the ceremony on its website and Facebook page.

Carter Mountain Orchard Just minutes from Highland and Monticello is the ever popular Carter Mountain Orchard. The folks at the Orchard will wish America Happy Birthday on July 4 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Carter Mountain provides perhaps the best view around for watching all of the area’s fireworks, which typically begin around 9:00 p.m.

Scottsville celebrates Independence Day on July 4 with a parade, music, and a “cruise-in,” all followed by fireworks. The parade kicks off downtown at 9:00 a.m. Immediately following the parade there will be a “cruise-in” in Dansey Field— that’s a car show designed to give car lovers a chance to sit and talk about cars. There will be food and drink vendors on the field on Irish Road. Music starts at 5:00 p.m. and runs till 8:00 p.m. in Dorrier Park, supplied this year by Orion & the Melted Crayons and then Drew Pace. Fireworks over the historic James River are scheduled for dusk.
