JUNE 8 - 14, 2022 ISSUE 3123

Take a Day Trip! BY KEN WILSON

You won’t have to go far, not if you want to see dinosaur fossils, hear glorious classical music, or learn about Virginia’s most heroic civil rights activists. Not if you’d like to go swimming in fresh flowing water in a beautiful nature preserve, hike one of the highest peaks in the Commonwealth, or mountain bike through rolling farmland or past charming shops and Civil War battlefields. Grab a pouch and pack a lunch, or hit a museum café and splurge on dessert—these are day trip days, and we have destinations aplenty.

Nelson County Scenic Loop If the weather is hot and the humidity’s high, you can see the gorgeous Virginia countryside in your air-conditioned car. Try driving the Nelson Scenic Loop, a 50-mile tour along Route 151, Route 664, the Blue Ridge Parkway (built as a WPA project in 1935) and Route 56. The Loop rises in elevation from 850 feet in the foothills of the Piedmont to 4,050 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Breweries, cideries, farm markets, restaurants and historic structures including an 1830s manor house beckon along the way.

Wintergreen Music Festival Central Virginia’s classical music lovers needn’t travel to the Berkshires or even to Wolf Trap to hear a live orchestra or string quartet in summertime. The Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy hits the beautiful mountainside Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County every July with a month’s worth of classics and new compositions. Artistic Director Erin Freeman has jazz and pops concerts along with the core classical programs planned for the 2022 festival season, this July 6-31. This year’s familiar favorites will include Tchaikovsky’s epic Fifth Symphony, Mozart’s heartrending Symphony No. 40, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2,

part of the exhibition Whistler to Cassatt: American Painters in France. Elsewhere in the museum, Frances Benjamin Johnston and Keris Salmon’ photographs of early Southern architecture are on view through January. One of America’s first female photojournalists, active in the 1930s, Johnston documented not only stately manors and their crumbling interiors, but humbler structures like cabins, barns, taverns, mills, and the homes of the enslaved. Multi-media artist Salmon’s photos of former plantations in the U.S. and the Caribbean help us better imagine the lives of both slaves and slaver owners. Salmon juxtaposes quiet, luminous interior and exterior scenes with texts culled from archival sources including ledgers, logs, legal documents, diaries, interviews, and slave auction records. VMFA’s European Art collection includes more than 10,000 objects, including paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, and works on paper. Its collection of African art—figures, masks, textiles, regalia, and ritual objects—is one of the

whose musical jokes and tortured final movement shocked the cognoscenti when it premiered in 1803. Movie Night will feature live music to cartoons and Orson Welles’ 1938 silent screen comedy, Too Much Johnson. Family friendly options will include performances of Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and Bluegrass Friday Nights.

Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia Housed in a grand old building dating to 1832 and incorporating both Greek and Federal architectural features, the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia in Richmond has a mission “to tell the complete and inclusive story about America” by celebrating the rich culture, contributions, and histories of African-American people in Virginia. The museum’s focus is outstanding citizens such as Tuskegee Airman Lt. Col. Howard L. Baugh, early NASCAR driver Wendell Scott, and trailblazing civil rights activist and attorney Oliver W. Hill, a leading lawyer in one of the five lawsuits consolidated into the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas (1954). Other displays highlight key places, people and moments in Black history. Emancipation Oak in Hampton Roads, site of the first official reading in the

South of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, is one of these. Another features the Richmond 34, a group of Virginia Union University students who conducted a sit-in in February, 1960 in downtown Richmond to protest segregated lunch counters. Guided tours are available by reservation.

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fine arts lovers will want to see the more than 100 paintings by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, Mary Cassatt, and John Singer Sargent and others on display through July 31 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, as

most comprehensive in the country. With its extensive holdings of Native American, ancient Mediterranean, East Asian, Pre-Columbian art as well, the museum is a day-long delight. Admission to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is free—365 days of the year.

The Science Museum of Virginia Richmond is also home to the Science Museum of Virginia, housed in an elegant, converted 1917 train station, with its four floors of permanent exhibitions and touring exhibitions, interactive labs and awesome artifacts. The museum’s Content for Curious Minds includes hundreds of hands-on experiences. Part showroom and part workshop, the Forge is a makerspace dedicated to innovation, design and fabrication where museumgoers roll up their sleeves and create whatever they fancy. Shows in the museum’s “one of a kind” Dome theater explore the galaxies and the movies too. The Science Museum of Virginia is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Planet Shark: Predator or Prey show lets guests trace millions of years of evolution, come face-to-face with the great white shark, and learn the true impact of the shark fin trade. The exhibit includes shark models cast from real animals, a collection of real teeth and jaws, and

rare fossils up to 370 million years old. Dinosaurs Alive brings dinosaurs, their behavior and their ancient environments to the big screen with scientifically accurate computer generated imagery (CGI), as paleontologists from the American Museum of Natural History uncover new fossils, including what may be the oldest dinosaur ever found on this continent. Superpower Dogs takes viewers around the globe to meet lifesaving dogs like Follow Halo, a puppy in training to join a disaster response team, and Ricochet, a Californian surf legend who helps people with special needs. Museum admission runs from $16 for adults to $10 for preschoolers. Kids two and under get in free. Individual shows are also ticketed and may be reserved online.

Dinosaur lovers—kids and former kids, that is—can see dino tracks left nearly 210 million years ago in what was then a vast swampy plain near what is now Culpeper. Named Kayentapus, they are the largest meat-eating dinosaur tracks found in Virginia so far. A sculpture of an adult dinosaur depicts a living, hunting, dynamic predator in action, similar to the dinosaur that made these tracks, while the outdoor Dinosaur Discovery Trail displays life-like replicas of 16 different dinosaurs. Dig pits for amateur paleontologists (one with a whale speciman found in Hampton Roads) and a Paleo camp are other highlights of the Discovery Trail.

Virginia Living Museum

The Chrysler Museum in Norfolk was founded in 1933, but it really became impressive in 1971 when Walter P. Chrysler,

The Virginia Living Museum in Newport News calls itself Virginia’s Animal Attraction & Dino Destination. As a sanctuary for orphaned, non-releasable or injured animals, the museum is home to more than 250 species of animals including reptiles, mammals, birds and fish. The museum has one of the largest displays of native plants in the Commonwealth of Virginia, including gardens of native plants for landscaping, and a butterfly garden with plants for wild butterflies and their larvae. Other plants around the museum grounds provide nectar for hummingbirds; fruit, nuts or seeds for birds and mammals; and shelter or nesting spaces for a variety of other creatures.

Chrysler Museum

Jr. donated his collection of more than 10,000 works of art. Today it has fifty galleries, a growing collection of more than 30,000 objects, including an interactive space for families, a renowned glass collection and the only glass studio of its kind in the Mid-Atlantic region. Best of all, museum admission is free. On view through August 14, The Guiding Hand: The Barr Foundation Collection of Torah Pointers is a remarkable exhibition of historic and contemporary Judaica. The focus is elaborate contemporary and historic “yads”—tapered sticks used to point the way through the text of the Torah (the five books of Moses, sacred to Jews)—so that human hands needn’t touch the fragile, handwritten animalskin parchment. Named after the Hebrew word for hand because of the miniature hands typically found on the tip of the pointer,

these yads were traditionally carved out of wood, but sometimes in silver or ivory instead. Others now are shaped from materials like Lucite, paper, graphite, porcelain or glass; some are even ornamented with gold and jewels.

Bike, Hike, Float and Swim in Every Direction It is a challenging 8.5 mile hike from Falls Hollow Trail to one of the highest peaks in Virginia, Elliot Knob, in Augusta County. The 2,425 feet to the top of the trail may take you a good six hours or more. But on the way up you’ll see two small waterfalls. Clearings along the trail offer breathtaking views, and near the fire tower at the summit are two sheltered campsites suitable for overnight tents. The trail can be accessed via a small pull-in parking lot off of VA 42 south of Buffalo Gap. Look for a stop sign with the number 291 attached.

The 9.5 mile James River Heritage Trail takes riders through the woods, and into historic downtown Lynchburg. Various sections of this trail are named the Blackwater Creek Bikeway, the Point of Honor Trail, the Kemper Station Trail, the Riverwalk, and the Percival’s Island Trail. Another easy and notably beautiful trail for both cyclists and hikers is Guest River Gorge Trail in Wise County. Built upon an old railroad grade, this 5.9-mile trail follows the meandering Guest River past eight branches and creeks, finally flowing into the Clinch River. Along the way it winds through woodlands and through a breathtaking gorge past 300-million year old cliffs and rock outcrops. The gravel trail is relatively easy on the downgrade, but more challenging on upward inclines. Many benches along the way let the

winded traveler take a breather and take in the view. Flycatchers, warblers, and tanagers may be seen during the summer months, as well as monarch, eastern comma, and painted lady butterflies. At the water’s edge look for nesting green herons and tail-pumping Louisiana water thrushes. Hanover County’s 26-mile long Ashland Ramble wends through Ashland and other small rural communities, through lovely farmland, and past Patrick Henry’s plantation, Scotchtown. Rated easy, with only a few small climbs, the Ramble is perfect for novice cyclers. A good place to start is the Ashland/Hanover Visitors Center and train station at 112 North Railroad Ave. Parking is available along Railroad Ave. and at the visitor’s center. Look for pretty days these next few months too. Take a day trip. Discover Virginia.
