Jason Mott’s Hell of a Book is a story of race, family, love, and justice that is by turns hilarious and moving. The New York Times calls it “powerful, timely, and provocative.” Time magazine calls Robert Jones, Jr.’s, novel The Prophets, about two struggling gay slaves in Mississippi, “scintillating” and “lyrical.” The Washington Post calls it “sinuous” and “multivoiced.” National Book Award judge Hannah Oliver Depp will moderate the conversation.

promote and celebrate books, reading, literacy, and literary culture. This year’s banquet of readings, discussions, classes, and story times is set for March 16 through 20. Most programs are free and open to the public, though COVID-19 safety measures will reduce capacity in many venues. National Book Award Favorites Three 2021 National Book Award honored novelists will discuss ancestors, ghosts, and community on March 19 at 4:00 p.m. at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center. The latest mysteries by Kellye Garrett, Naomi Hirahara, and Alma Katsu explore sisterhood, both biological and chosen. The New York Times bestselling author, Laura Lippmann, calls Kellye Garrett “a break-out star in crime fiction.” In Garrett’s new thriller, Like a Sister, the death of a Black reality TV star is just another ho-hum murder, except to her estranged half-sister, who refuses to believe the official story and embarks on a dangerous search for the truth. Naomi Hirahara sets her 2021 mystery, Clark and Division, in 1944 Chicago, where a young woman searches for the truth about her revered older sister’s death. Gleaned from thirty years of research, and rich with period details, the novel shows the struggles of one Japanese American family newly released from incarceration in a California internment camp. Alma Katsu’s Red Widow is a spy thriller written by an intelligence veteran about two female CIA agents who strike up an unusual friendship when the agency’s Russia division is threatened from the inside. Ellen Crosby, author of the Virginia Wine Country mystery series, will moderate a conversation between the three writers on March 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center.

Charlottesville writer Jocelyn Nicole Johnson’s much praised debut, My Monticello, comprises five stories and a novella, each set in Virginia, and is being adapted for a film on Netflix. Exploring Family Bonds The three women in Exploring Family Bonds, March 17 at 10 a.m. at JMRL’s Central Library, have written meditations on parenting, building families, and finding connections between identity and blood history. Julietta Singh’s The Breaks: An Essay considers race, inheritance, and the challenges of gay mothering. The New York Public Library called it one of the “Best Books of 2021.” Taylor Harris’ work has appeared in O Quarterly Magazine, The Washington Post, Parents, McSweeney’s, and more. Harris’ heart-wrenching memoir, This Boy We Made: A Memoir of Motherhood, Genetics, and Facing the Unknown, examines the bond between a mother and a mysteriously ill child, as Harris bumps up against the limits of everything she thought she believed about science and medicine, motherhood, and faith. Jan Beatty’s lyrical American Bastard explores her experience as a child born to unmarried parents as she travels across

continents to find her birthfather, a Stanley Cup-winning Canadian hockey player, and her birthmother, a workingclass woman from Pittsburgh. The book takes a hard look at the West’s often romanticized conception of adoption. Independent researcher Elizabeth Birdsall, whose current work examines children’s agency in child custody disputes, will lead the conversation.

Grieving and Healing: the Poetry of Rita Dove and Victoria Chang UVA’s Rita Dove is a Pulitzer Prize winner and a former United States Poet Laureate. In Playlist for the Apocalypse: Poems, her first volume of new poetry in twelve years, Dove brings us the voices of a resentful elevator operator, an exuberant octogenarian dancer, and a mordantly humorous spring cricket philosophizing about hip hop, critics, and Valentine’s Day. In the book’s final, personal section, “Little Book of Woe,” Dove journeys from terror to hope as she learns to cope with debilitating chronic illness. In her 2020 collection of poems, Obit, Victoria Chang considers “the way memory gets up after someone has died and starts walking.” Chang found a fittingly personal way of processing her grief over her mother’s death: over a feverish twoweek period she wrote scores of poetic obituaries for “civility,” “language,” “the future,” “Mother’s blue dress,” and other felt losses. Obit was longlisted for the 2020 National Book Award in Poetry.

Dove and Chang will read from their work at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center on March 20 at 3:00 p.m.

Yes, Virginia, There Really Are Rust Belt Vegans If you dare, or if you doubt, page through Rust Belt Vegan Kitchen, a community cookbook showcasing little known Rust Belt cuisine and old-fashioned Rust Belt know-how. You’ll find vegan versions of regional standards like Polish pierogis, Detroit coney dogs, and Mexican conchas. Editor Meredith Pangrace will talk about these recipes and demonstrate one or two on the Festival’s Facebook page, on March 18 at 2:00 p.m.

Natural Treasures, Natural Healing Kat Maier has been a practicing clinical herbalist for over 30 years, and is currently director of Sacred Plant Traditions, a center for herbal studies in Charlottesville. Maier’s book Energetic Herbalism: A Guide to Sacred Plant Traditions Integrating Elements of Vitalism, Ayurveda, and Chinese Medicine traces links between traditional healing practices, essential plant medicines, and ecological stewardship. Solidago plumosa is a rare species of goldenrod found only on the banks of North Carolina’s Yadkin River. The carnivorous Sarracenia alabamensis, commonly known as Alabama canebrake

pitcher plant, grows only in one small, central area of the state. These and other rare and native plants, now threatened by development and climate change, are integral not only to their natural ecosystems but to American Southern identity, argues Georgann Eubanks, author of Saving the Wild South: The Fight for Native Plants on the Brink of Extinction. Studying the area’s astonishingly rich biodiversity, Eubanks finds inspiration in talking with her heroes—the botanists, advocates, and conservationists young and old—on a quest to save these green gifts of the South for future generations. Maier and Eubanks will discuss their research and their travels on March 20 at 11:00 a.m. at the Ivy Creek Natural Area.

Civil War Archives Andrew Lang’s A Contest of Civilizations explores how the crisis of the Civil War challenged the doctrine of American exceptionalism. Caroline E. Janney’s Ends of War shows that Lee’s surrender at Appomattox triggered a period of military and political uncertainty, legal and logistical confusion, and sporadic violence. Jonathan W. White’s To Address You as My Friend collects the letters of AfricanAmericans to the man they hoped so much from, President Abraham Lincoln. Janney, Lang, and White will discuss the war, its aftermath, and its repercussions for the country’s self-understanding on March 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the UVA Bookstore.

American Imperialism: Its Impact and Its Legacy

Seeing Trees, Saving Forests Poet and essayist Diane Ackerman calls Meg Lowman’s The Arbornaut: A Life Discovering the Eighth Continent in the Trees Above Us “an eye-opening and enchanting book by one of our major scientist-explorers.” Once the only girl at the science fair, now a biologist, botanist, and conservationist nicknamed the “Real-Life Lorax” by National Geographic, Lowman blends memoir and fieldwork as she takes readers on an adventure into the “eighth continent” of the world’s treetops. The five beautiful megaforests left on Earth today harbor innumerable species and play an essential role in decarbonizing the atmosphere and slowing climate change. Preservationists John W. Reid and Thomas E. Lovejoy intend Ever Green: Saving Big Forests to Save the Planet as a call

Imperialism, family history, and the immigrant experience are the subjects of Albert Samaha’s Concepcion: An Immigrant Family’s Fortunes, written “to honor my elders.” As Samaha recounts how his mother and her brother Spanky—a rising pop star back in Manila, reduced to working as a luggage handler at the San Francisco airport—struggled for financial security following their immigration to America, he wonders whether their decision to forego middle-class life has been worth the cost. Rooting his family’s own history in Spanish colonialism, American intervention, and Japanese occupation, Samaha considers ways in which the world’s most powerful nations drive global migration.

In Jonathan M. Katz’s Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, the Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America’s Empire, the extraordinary life of a complicated Marine serves as a window on America’s rise to global power—and how it shaped the world we know today. “The book is far more extraordinary than even the life of Smedley Butler,” The Washington Post says. It’s also “a compelling and insightful meditation on the trauma people still feel as a result of Butler’s career and the American ambitions it represented.” Katz and Samaha will discuss the impact of American economic and military imperialism on the lives of ordinary citizens, on March 19 at 10:00 a.m. in Irving Theater, CODE Building on Water Street.

Life in Bogotá, Colombia, is just about perfect for Juana in Juana Medina’s Juana & Lucas: Muchos Changes—until she has to go to skate camp, that is. She can’t even skate! And her Mami is going to have a baby?! When little Africa wants to be a Double Dutch legend like her grandmother, her brother scoffs—how can she win when she’s never jumped rope before? But Africa has a birthmark in the shape of her name—and it tells her she’s always a winner. Brittany J. Thurman’s Fly, illustrated by Anna Cunha, is a sweet story about a young black girl’s confidence and perseverance as she follows her Double Dutch dreams. Picture book lovers can hear these and three other stories, and read along via closed captions in this virtual event on March 19 at 10:00 a.m. The Virginia Festival of the Book is a community effort, presented by Virginia Humanities with the help of the city of Charlottesville along with local foundations, businesses, civic groups, and enthusiastic individuals. It’s good to be a reader in Virginia.
