Scott and Jana sat with me at a round table in my office.

They were young parents who wanted to enroll their oldest child, Robert, in kindergarten for the following school year. I knew Scott and Jana.

They were former students of mine from when I was their high school principal. That probably explained their nervous fidgeting as, once again, they found themselves sitting in my office, albeit under way different circumstances.

I knew I would be able to eventually put them at ease, but I wasn’t eager to do that so quickly.

Once a high school principal, always a high school principal, I guess. After my allotted 15 seconds of small talk, I went to my first and most important question: “Can you please provide for me a description of the person you’d like Robert to be when he graduates from high school?”

Generally, mothers cry when I ask that question, not even wanting to think about this precious five-year-old leaving the house for college. The wise dad resists the urge to roll his eyes at the teary-eyed woman sitting next to him. When the emotions are under control, we talk about the hopes and dreams parents have for their children.

How would you answer that question?

Scott and Jana were raised in Christian homes, attended a Christian church faithfully, and wanted the best for little Robert. I don’t recall their exact answer – it’s been 16 years since I conducted that interview – but a summary of the best answers I’ve received over the years would go something like this.

“Mr. Baker, I want my daughter to love God with all her heart.

“My prayer would be that when my son graduates from high school he possesses a faith of his own, a spiritual maturity that will guide his decisions.

“Honestly, I want my child to have good friends and I want him to be a good friend.

Further, I expect him to be prepared well for the next step in his life.

“If God calls my daughter to a career, I want her to be prepared to pursue that career.

“My expectation is that my 18-year-old son will be respectful, well-liked, kind, and filled with integrity.

“At 18 and ready to graduate, I want my daughter to look back and be able to say that she had done her best, that she had worked hard, studied diligently and pushed herself to be the best she could be. And I want her to be content with that.

“When my son graduates from high school, I want him to give the valedictory speech. Mr. Baker, let’s just plan on that.

“Our desire for Robert is that, by 18, he has matured into a Christian young man who wants to serve God with all his heart.”

In Deuteronomy 6, God commanded his people to love Him with all their heart and soul and strength. He further commanded them to do everything they possibly could to impress that command on their children. God is still commanding his people to do that – to love Him with heart, soul and strength. And God is still commanding parents to impress that command on their children. In the interviews I’ve conducted over the years, I’ve witnessed parents who still take those instructions seriously.

At the conclusion of the interview with Scott and Jana, Scott rose to shake my hand. He looked me in the eyes to say, “Mr. Baker, it’s our job to train Robert in God’s ways. We are the parents and we believe God gave him to us with that task. We are here, today, because we want help. We want other people in his life pointing him in that same direction.”

So, Why CVC? If you are parents, like Scott and Jana, who want your children to grow and mature into responsible Christian adults eager and able to follow God’s will and God’s call on their lives, you should enroll your child in a school that wants that exact same thing.

Each Thursday, the high school student body gathers at 8:55 a.m. to fellowship and worship God. Aside from occasional pep rallies, this is the only event that brings the entire high school together. And standing at the front of them is a group of students who have come together each morning of the semester — some days to read the Bible, some days to pray, some days to practice, some days to meditate and some days to do all of the above. They call this crew Impact.

I myself was once involved in Impact at CVC. (Let’s not discuss how long ago that was.) Along with a handful of other students, I grew into this group that laughed together, prayed together, worshiped together and had as strong of fellowship as one could ask for in high school. But that was when we held chapel in the gym. And now, we have chapel in the, well, chapel.

So for a refresher course, I walk into the high school chapel, and observe as the Impact class takes their spots and gets ready for the worship in which they’ll lead the students. The drummer comes in first, practically jogging and then hopping onto the stage. (Stairs are for singers, I guess.) Jeremy Lyzenga, the Impact and chapel coordinator (and high school Bible teacher), tests the microphone by beatboxing into it. The three students in the back of the house adjust the light and sound, and there’s a spasmodic, bright and brief light show.

Eventually the full band is up on the chapel stage, prepping for a song, and the drummer starts out with driving toms, a sturdy, yet hollow sound, to begin “And They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love.” They continue with practice, working out kinks, figuring out harmonies, and encouraging each other throughout. As they wrap up practice, they gather together in a circle, to discuss who will introduce the speaker, and when they’ll come up to the stage and return to their seats.

And they close practice in prayer. Prayer for each other, prayer for the speaker, and prayer for the entire campus.

After practice, I was able to talk with a few of the members of the Impact team: Sarah, Sadie and Beth, all junior girls, and all with a clear love for music and for Jesus. As I talk to them a little more, I learn that one of the singers today is a guest.

I ask her how the campus views the Impact team. Without a beat, she responds, “Everyone recognizes them and knows them. They [students] might not know their names, but they know that they’re in Impact. They look up to them.” This is a curious answer, since shortly before that, Impact member/ singer/pianist Sadie Elsenbroek responded to the same question with a humble shrug: “Oh, well, they just know we’re in Impact.”

Generally the songs that Impact leads the students in worship go in this thematic order: “praise, confession, surrender,”

Still wondering how and when this class started? I asked the same of Dan Ruiter, Impact guru (former coordinator) and sound tech whiz (official title: Auditorium Director). He gave me a relatively straightforward answer: “It would be about 13 or 14 years ago that we put it into a class structure. [Former principal] Gary Adams said his previous school did this. I said I'd like to try it out too. The rest is history.” As a part of that history, I’m amazed at how students are given the opportunity at Central Valley Christian to be involved in so many things, from sports to plays to clubs to Impact.

That Thursday’s set list included: “They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love,” “Take My Life and Let It Be,” and “Lay Me Down,” following the usual pattern.

I moved on from the students involved in Impact and started querying the staff for a few answers. I asked Lyzenga why Impact is important to CVC and the ways that the class has affected him.

generally very positive. We approach Impact more like a team than a class in a lot of ways. The environment is one where we can learn from each other, and we do so by a lot of trial and error. It is also really great to see students passionate for music and worship leadership, and to see them encourage and stretch each other to become better musicians and leaders.”

At a recent meeting wherein a few directors, principals and the superintendent gathered, Dan briefly gave an overview of his recent trip to an audio and tech conference in Southern California. He recalled how as he told strangers and old friends alike about the programs he helped with at Central Valley Christian, they kept coming back (to his surprise) to the same term: “vision.” Indeed, while having three students running audio and visual (and really, really large soundboards) and eight students playing music every week, can sometimes lead to crossed eyes and a slight tension headache, the vision continues. The ability to have high school students come of their own volition, and get involved through music, tech, and leadership, is something that must be grounded in vision.

Multiple students mentioned that it was difficult to join Impact because of the daily time commitment--they had no time left in their schedule for study hall, yet they chose to join because they wished to lead Central Valley Christian Schools’ students to a closer walk with God. For the students, this is an example of choosing Others over self. For the staff, it’s an example of helping cultivate responsible Christian adults, both onstage and off.

Some Thursday morning in the near future, if you visit our chapel, you can take part in this vision yourself.

He confirmed most of my suspicions (which I was able to craft having been a student in Impact some 10-12 years ago): “Impact provides students exposure to spiritual leadership early on. If there’s one thing I try to stress to them, it’s that they are leaders on this campus, and like it or not, students look up to them (literally on stage and figuratively) as they go through the rest of their high school days. It is a chance to instill confidence, and to grow important life skills of communication, and organization along with the theological and musical knowledge and experience that is gained.”

He continued, “As Impact coordinator, I get the immense blessing of starting off every day with these great kids. They are a lot of fun to work with, and they are very teachable, and 5

I think Impact is important because it is great for students to grow closer to God through worship. It affects others by growing closer to God and it has helped me get closer to God as well because I get to learn and study new worship music. — Bradin Chea I think Impact is important because it helps us develop a further relationship outside of our classes. In our classes they try to incorporate God in what they teach and we can honor God by worshiping him not only at church but at school. For Spiritual Emphasis Week, (February 7-9) Central Valley Christian's elementary campus invited artist Tessa Davidson to lead chapels and teach classes based around this year's theme: "Others: It's Not About Us." Ms. Davidson is a professional artist and art educator working outside of Little Rock, Arkansas. She strives to explore the relationship between fatith and the visual arts through employing Christian themes in her work. Her work can be viewed at: tessadvaidsonartist.com.

Spiritual Emphasis Week is a time set aside out of each year at CVC that helps students focus in on the theme for the year through having chapel three times in one week with an invited speaker.

Dr. Elane Geller, Holocaust survivor, addresses student body On Friday, January 20, CVC had a special opportunity to hear an address from Dr. Elane Geller. Dr. Geller lived through concentration camps as a young girl, and her message was one of standing up to hate and injustice. The message gave the student body and other society attendees the opportunity to discuss World History, and to put faces to the unspeakable atrocities that have happened in the world.

The stories of our parents, our faculty, and our students speak of something far deeper than robust academic programs and exceptional staff. For many families, enrolling their child at CVC is a decision spurred by a desire to partner with a school that has the same goals as they do: to instill a love of learning; inspire a love for neighbors; and ignite a love for God. Read on to see the answers each of these interviewees came up with when asked: “Why CVC?”

This is my second year teaching at CVC, and I feel so blessed to work here. I taught for three years at a public school prior to CVC, and I would say the two biggest reasons why I love teaching here is Christ and community. I felt so free my first year at this school because I was not only allowed to, but also encouraged to share God’s truth with my students.

The first month or so, I had to remind myself to pray with my students, because it was something I was not used to doing.

I told my students to please remind me to pray with them if I forgot, because at my former school, I wasn’t allowed to pray with my students. Their little jaws dropped like that was the worst thing in the world! When Christmas comes around, and Easter later in the year, I am so overjoyed that I can speak the truth that it’s all about Christ! I love the discussions I can have with my students about the Bible - children understand so much more than we give them credit for! I also love that we can regularly study God’s Word and memorize it. Those verses are something we can carry in our hearts for the rest of our lives, to equip us for what lies ahead.

My second big reason why I love my job here is the CVC community. I remember at the start of the year, when I

went to all-staff devotions. Once again, it was something I was not used to, and it was so refreshing! In the midst of all the craziness we face as teachers, to come together and remember why we do what we do is a wonderful opportunity.

I am not only thankful for the wonderful staff I can work with, but also the supportive parents. When teaching at a public school, there is always an attempt to encourage family involvement, and there are some wonderful parents that respond to it, but many times my efforts felt one-sided.

Parent-teacher conferences in the fall were stressful for me because often, it was my first time communicating with the parents of my students. Now at CVC, I look forward to that time to meet with parents, because there has already been much communication and building of relationships between me and the parents of my students.

To be honest, I was initially worried that teaching at a Christian school would make me too comfortable in a Christian “bubble”. However, I am so amazed at how God has used my profession as a window of opportunity when I am out and about in other parts of Visalia, California, and even the world! When I strike up a conversation with a stranger, and we share about our lives, I can say right off the bat, “I teach first grade at a Christian school”. There it is - an opportune moment, that has blessed me with such wonderful discussions that never would’ve happened, had CVC not been a part of my story. I am so thankful for my job here, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I first heard about CVC from my friend Jaalen. Jaalen came in as an 8th grader and encouraged me to come check out CVC. I used to go to Hanford High. Even though I was taking a bunch of AP classes, I wasn’t challenged at all. Now my environment is completely different and the academics here are central.

I enrolled in CVC last fall and started attending in October 2016. Even though it wasn’t at the beginning of the year, it was easy enough for me to get plugged in, since I knew Jaalen already. I also knew a few others because I came to all the CVC games before I enrolled. Now that I’m involved in football, I know even more people. I really like being on the football team and now I’m looking into joining the track team to stay in shape.

Of all the staff, my favorite teacher is Mrs. Maciel. She’s super open with students, speaks her mind and doesn’t hold back.

The most challenging class I’ve had thus far is Bible.

I haven’t taken a Bible class before, and even though I’m a Christian and go to church, there’s so much I don’t know about it all. I’m learning a lot through that class.

My mom is also really excited that I’m at CVC. She feels that I’m being challenged regularly, and that the environment is a positive one.

If someone was looking at CVC and asked me, “Why CVC?” I’d tell them that if you want more college exposure and more challenging academics (including Bible) come here!

THE CAVALIER said Central Valley Christian School, and had nothing but great things to say about the school. So I went online and did some research on CVC. I scheduled a tour, and Nicole Mulder gave me a tour of the school, introduced me to the teachers and staff and answered all of my questions. I loved the school; everyone was very kind and very helpful. I knew then and there, that this was the school my kids needed to attend.

The first day of school, Matthew and Ashley were very nervous - a new town and a new school. I think I was just as nervous as they were, but by the time I walked back to my car, I felt a sense of relief. I knew they were in a great school and a safe place.

Lori Reeves had arranged for some students in Matthew’s grade to show him around and make him feel comfortable. As I took Ashley to her class, Mrs. De Groot showed her to her desk and cubby and a couple of girls from another class came to the door all excited, saying “We want to meet the new girl!” It was so comforting to me knowing they were going to be okay!

My husband and I have been in the dairy business for 17 years.

We recently moved our dairy business to Visalia in September 2016. We moved from Escalon, a small town up north, where we had lived for 13 years. Our small town had a couple of elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. Our children attended school there from preschool through high school, with the exception of Ashley, who is in 6th grade.

Now that they have been at CVC for a few months, they really like it. They have made friends and settled into their new routines. They enjoy the academics and Bible. We have always been involved at church, but they enjoy learning more about God, the Bible and how to use what they have learned on a daily basis.

While looking at the dairy facility we are currently at in Visalia, we met the neighbors and I asked them about the schools in the area. I asked them where their children went to school. They all

I could not be happier with our choice of school for Matthew and Ashley. I look forward to watching them grow and succeed in everything they do at CVC.

learning, but also one of calling. Teachers dedicate themselves to educating the whole person and to equipping students to live a life that explores and elevates all that is important and eternal.

There are days at CVC I will never forget: third grade multiplication tables, fourth grade California mission building, fifth grade state fair (go Massachusetts!), band concerts, fall festivals, volleyball games, missions trips to Mexico and everything in between. But 'Why CVC?' is so much simpler: because of teachers along the way who continued to make this investment in us, we are better learners, friends, advocates, stewards and believers.

Here in Christian higher education we talk a lot about the ‘narrow ridge’ – that is, finding our place between intellectual curiosity and Christian commitment, truth and grace, responsibility and compassion. The way I see it, CVC thrives as a result of this commitment, too.

It’s not always easy to draw a straight line between trigonometry and success in our industry, but regardless of the careers my former classmates and I have chosen, having been a Cavalier gave us a compelling reason to pursue whatever we do with knowledge and with tenacity, humility and grace. THE CAVALIER How three CVC teachers worked together to build a lesson plan spanning three classes and multiple grade levels to create a heavy metal moment There are a couple of classes you might imagine go together: Bible and History. Band and Choir. Psychology and Government. (Okay, that last one might be a bit of a stretch.) But what’s truly imaginative is a collaboration begun this past school year with Art, Chemistry and Metal Shop.

CVC’s Science Department Head and Chemistry teacher Steve Gann wanted to work with other teachers to help students bridge the gap between classes. Science is not just for the sake of science, and when used in tandem with art and with metal shop, it could create something bigger (or bronzer). Of the partnership, Mr. Gann had this to say: “For several years, both Kurt [Mr. Saltzman] and I had been bouncing around the idea of forging and casting metal. But making that work as a chemistry lab was a tricky thing. My class does not provide the tools, time, or training for such work. His classes did, though. We hoped we could collaborate someday if the right project turned up. A couple of years ago, I finally stumbled upon the Caveman Chemistry book and read the Bronze experiment. I immediately thought, ‘OK, this could really work!’ I could do the chemicals and Kurt could do the casting….The only problem was the lab called for a kiln to heat homemade clay crucibles to 1900°F. The 14

only person who had the equipment to do that was Kevin [Mr. Langmaack]. I approached him about the project and he quickly got on board. We had our team put together by November of 2015, giving us until February to do the project.”

So, let’s do a little chemistry. In our minds (If you have a personal kiln, please don’t try this at home. If you don’t have a personal kiln, please also don’t try this at home). For this particular example of teamwork, we begin with Mr. Langmaack, the art teacher. He had each student create a crucible. (Hint: not the Arthur Miller play). A crucible used in chemistry and metalwork is a metal or ceramic container that can be used to melt metals at very high temperatures. For the lab, students used clay to form what looks like a sort-of goblet, complete with a hollowed-out funnel-shaped inside and a lid. (See photos.) The clay crucible was fired once in the kiln, ready for the next step.

For the metal-elements portion of the lab, Mr. Gann took the students participating in this bronze lesson and had them place copper carbonate and tin oxide inside the crucible.

Over top of these items, they placed charcoal to prevent oxygen from taking part in the reaction happening inside the crucible.

Next, the defining moment: the smelting stage. The crucible was fired in the kiln, which was placed at a temperature of

Coordinating three curriculums and approximately 75 student schedules isn’t easy--and collaborative teaching doesn’t always have a bronze trophy at the end of it. Mr. Gann said, “The most challenging part for me was to take the instructions in the…text and scale them up so four classes of students could do it correctly and safely.” He went on to explain that Mr. Langmaack both helped him procure materials he had difficulty finding, and came into the chemistry classes to teach the art of clay crucible-making. Both Mr. Langmaack and Mr. Saltzman added their expertise to the project, and made it a success story! Ordinarily, we’d say go for the gold, but when it comes to collaborative teaching, this effort was worth more than its weight in bronze.

When our teachers work together for the benefit of our students, the reward is good and the lessons learned are even greater. Instead of simply telling our students why each class and lesson and the concept of “working well with others” is important, our teachers showed them.

What will CVC’s next staff collaboration be? Perhaps a mathematical musical...

1900°F, effectively allowing the expected chemical reaction to occur. The crucible was given time to cool off, and inspected for any sign of bronze piece, or ingot. Ideally, during the firing, liquid copper and liquid tin are created. Since these two metals shared a container, they should have mixed together at the bottom of the crucible, making the bronze (which is a metal containing both copper and tin).

All the ingots were collected and presented to Mr. Saltzman, CVC’s metal shop and wood shop teacher. He took the bronze ingots and melted them down, and poured them into molds.

Mr. Saltzman joined in this project because, in his words: “Integration between different subjects is really important to me.

If you were...a student in school and had the thought, ‘How can I ever use this information that you’re teaching me right now in my future?’...Well, this is a great way to make different subjects real. I teach a lot of different subjects in metal and wood shop including math, science, art, business and history, so it’s really great to be able to work alongside other teachers.”

Curious what the physical takeaway from this lesson is? Word on the street is that there will be a bronze golf putter, made up of all those tiny ingots, melted and molded, up for bid at the School Sale in April. Two years of bronze-creation has resulted in 20-25 ounces of bronze to work with, which should be enough for more than one casting--the best casting out of the two should be up for sale to the highest bidder!

Since the two liquid metals form in the same container, they end up mixing together at the bottom of the crucible making the bronze (which is a metal containing both copper and tin).

The bronze ingots, which were dug out of the crucibles, were collected and melted over high heat in metal shop

The metal shop poured the melted ingots into a form, which can be melted again to create a bronze putter or a similar such item that will be put up for sale in the School Sale in April

1 After graduation, Taylor Gilkey ’06 attended Cuesta College, Cal Poly and FIDM Los Angeles, where she studied Dairy Science and Product Development/Entrepreneurship, respectively. She is currently working in the wine industry on the Central California coast and is engaged to Matthew Laird, who owns Mallard Crop Agency, located in San Luis Obispo. Taylor is also working on her Gilkey.co line of leather goods on the side.

2 Everet '08 and Chelsea '09 Leyendekker

along with their daughter Elliott welcomed son Rhett Nonning Leyendekker into their family on November 22nd, 2016.

3 Steven Potorke ’02 lives in Visalia, and has been married to his wife Jacki for seven years.

They have a temperamental Siamese cat named Seymour. Steven works as a medical technician and Jacki runs a photography business. As a side project, Steven customizes/ builds/repairs guitars and plays music often, sometimes at Radiant Church, where they regularly attend.

4 Kari Weis ’06 moved to LA in 2007, where

she attended design school. Since then, she has worked in design and marketing for an apparel start-up, a boutique financial firm and currently works in Burbank as a Senior Designer at Kaiser Permanente, where she has recently worked on an email campaign for flu awareness and prevention. In 2015, Kari started Kouver--a lifestyle brand consisting of blankets and scarves that are available at local farmers' markets and online.

5 Justin Dixon ’12 graduated from Texas A&M

in December 2016 and is starting a new job with Cargill in Amarillo, Texas in their feed and animal nutrition division as a management associate.
