WHO MIGHT BE LONELY? From the Superintendent’s Desk Larry Baker, CVCS Superintendent There are two girls on the elementary campus I talk with almost every morning. Emma and Sadie* are the best of friends. They come to school on different buses so whoever gets to school first usually waits with me until the other one shows up.

One day Emma’s bus was quite late, and Sadie and I had time to talk.

“You two are really good friends, aren’t you?” I started, knowing where I wanted to take the conversation.

“Yes. We’re best friends,” Sadie responded with a smile.

“That makes coming to school so much fun, when you have such a good friend who can’t wait to see you.” Even as I said it, I remembered having the same thing when I was in second grade. Ken Veenema, or “V,” was my best friend and we never seemed to get tired of seeing and spending time with each other.

Emma’s bus was nowhere in sight, so I continued. “Sadie, do you think there might be girls here, maybe in your own classroom, who don’t have a best friend, like you and Emma?”

I’m not sure if she was listening closely, but she was not running away, so I continued, “Can you imagine how lonely it would be if a girl didn’t have any friends?” Finally, knowing that my time was about up, I left her with a challenge. “You should look around today and try to find a girl who looks lonely. You could be her friend.”

Emma’s bus was pulling up. The bigger kids got off first and headed to the middle school and high school. Emma was one of the last ones off. When she saw Sadie, her eyes got big and they ran and gave each other a hug, just like every morning since school started.

Off they went.

I will have to revisit that conversation with Sadie. Loneliness was not God’s intention. He created us as social beings and for anyone to feel isolated and alone saddens Him. This business of joining God in his work of restoration is not an “adults only” game. Even a first or second grade student can see what makes Jesus sad. And a lot of times they can do something about it. That might be picking up some trash. It could be apologizing for saying something mean. It might be sharing a sandwich with a classmate who forgot his lunch. Or, it could be spending time at recess with a girl who looks lonely.

My prediction is that Sadie will be a student who never lacks for friends. She’s cute, outgoing, smart, and just very personable. That’s my prediction and I hope it’s true. But my dream, my prayer, is that from second grade on through high school, there will never be a lonely girl, there will not be even one student who feels like she has no friends, simply because that’s the way it is when Sadie’s in the class.
