T-Shirt Design Competition Design Objective My concept was designed around the intent of evoking emotion and connecting with the audience for a screen-printed t-shirt. The design structure represents the state of North Carolina while adding a wow factor to create a design worth wearing. Limitations in the design included a multi-color job with the option of a 5th color being that of the t-shirt.
Design Brief For this design, I sought to create a design that would celebrate North Carolina’s nautical history and stand out in a crowd. This design is an illustration of Blackbeard and incorporated tentacles from the legendary cephalopod sea monster, Kraken, into his beard. Blackbeard is a part of North Carolina history due to his reign as a pirate along our coast and is featured as the main focal point element within the design. The tentacles of the Kraken are in place to represent the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Kraken provided movement and rhythm to the overall design. The helm featured in the design background provided emphasis and movement to the design but is also a nod to the legendary dominance that Blackbeard had while sailing along the Atlantic. The placement of the banner along the tentacles draws your eye towards the center of the composition and shows contrast with the rest of the design. This design was then taken into a 3-color rubylith for screen-printing.

Adventures in Wonderland Design Objective
The overall concept of this project was to create a new take on the Adventures in Wonderland. Creating a 3-dimensional look for the graphic of the front cover.
Design Brief The ability to find a statement or quote that I can relate to was the concept of this design. A majority of people remember things about Alice but almost always tend to forget about the quality of other characters. I wanted to draw emphasis on the Mad Hatter because of the significance of his large green hat with the measurement slip and the pins. The exaggerated hands of the clock create movement in the piece and fulfill the esthetic of oddness that goes on in Wonderland. The paper engineering for the book cover gives a still 3-D element that creates a fun yet playful look. The vines along the front and back cover help draw the reader’s eye to encompass the full scope of the book.

Portland Puffins Wayfinding
Design Objective The overall scope of this project was to develop a professional league sports team brand and identity that would be expanding into wayfinding and environmental design proposal for the stadium.
Design Brief A full scope of sports team marketing and research provided important information on the best place to house a new NHL team. The name “Portland Puffins” is derived from the fact that the puffins nesting grounds are located within Portland, Maine. Even though puffins are not known for their aggression the team branding is designed to give a fierce look to compete with other NHL teams. Sven, the puffin is the primary logo that is larger to show hierarchy while drawing the viewers eyes in. The derived colors chosen are from the actual colors of the puffin, but the cyan is in place to create balance. The hashtag of #puffyouup is in place to create a slogan when the team has matches at home or away. A secondary and tertiary logo has been created, which would be used in different marketing materials and for merchandise for fans to purchase. The wayfinding elements include but are not limited to escalators, seat signs, elevators, sidewalk crossings, and a welcome sign. The environmental design is created and in place to hype up the fans.

Cortipril
Pharmaceutical Branding Design Objective While researching pharmaceutical brands in developing the brand identity for a prescription depression anxiety medication, comes Cortipril. My branding was then constructed to enhance the marketing message of “clarity from within” for the medication. The brand was then further developed with the packaging for the medication, along with developing a trade show booth and marketing materials.
Design Brief I enveloped a marketing message to coincide with the brand that ultimately drove the design and assets of the logo. The marketing message is “Clarity from Within.” This is based on the idea that depression medications help clear your brain to be able to complete your everyday tasks. Depression is a very well-known and everyday struggle for the vast majority of individuals around the world. A typographically driven logo design is a trend that is popular amongst Big Pharma. The mark for Cortipril is a circle with two leaves attached while the half circles are not connected; however, they are spaced enough to show the differences between them. The individual circles are a different tint of color to show the contrast of change that takes place when taking the medication. The color blue represents a calm emotion, which is what our medication will envoke in its clients. The green leaves are in place to show that nature is clear and clarity can come naturally from all aspects. A trade show booth was created to educate about the benefits of Cortipril. The image on the back panel consists of a clear landscape and is present to inform the onlookers what the medication is and how it can help.

Big Top Num Num’s Sweet Shop Branding Design Objective The scope of this project is to fully develop the concept of a brand identity for a sweet shop. By utilizing and researching marketing strategies to further enhance the business by curating a full-scale social media marketing campaign. Taking the brand of this company to then develop and code, by using HTML and CSS coding systems, a microsite for Big Top Num Num’s.
Design Brief Big Top Num Num’s is a sweet shop that specializes in carnival sweets and treats. The hospitality of the sweet shop brings in demographics of all walks of life. The primary logo was designed to represent that of a big top at the circus. The name of Big Top Num Num’s is being shown in the DeLousiville font. This typeface gives the carnival feel to complete the overall esthetic of the brand. The tagline of Spectacular Sweets Twisted Treats is in the Lao MN font. This typeface gives a grounding point for the carnival theme to sit on. The primary logo was expanded into a secondary logo with the mark is moved to the left of the name. Patterning was developed to be used in the promotional materials as well as the products in the establishment. The branding was also used to develop a digital marketing strategy. A full social media campaign was created along with the hashtag #yumyumnumnums to allow our targeted audience to embrace our brand and aesthetic. The microsite was established to coincide with the brand, but it also lives outside of the company website to be used for events or promotional efforts.

Red Hawk Red
Wine Branding and Packaging Design Objective Develop a new branded wine label and accompanying packaging for a wine collaboration between Catawba Valley Community College’s Alumni Association in Hickory, NC, and The Winery at Catawba Farms in Newton, NC. Our design embodies the culture and message of both organizations as they are working together to build a brighter future through this business development. The project was designed in a team setting, and my partner who assisted in the design process was Carina Garcia of CG Design Co.
Design Brief Our primary objective for the design of Red Hawk Red was to incorporate a slight inclination of the CVCC logo and that of a hawk itself without it being a hawk. The rises in the wings are to draw emphasis on that of the hills in the CVCC logo. The use of figure/ground with the wings makes the viewers’ eyes fill in the gaps to complete the hawk and the layout of the wings. The movement of the waves through the wing helps the viewer to look at the design from one tip of the wing to the other. With the wings spread out, it looks as if the hawk is taking flight or is in mid-flight. Carina and I created three tiers to our gifting suite prototypes. We developed a gift bag, box, and a tag that could be used as part of the promotional materials. We coordinated with a photographer and directed a photoshoot of all our prototypes depicted in the images. This concept was presented to a panel of judges amongst a total of 5 design teams.

Essentuals
Branding and Packaging Design Objective Developing a brand for a product of choice was the point of this creative effort. The design team developed a business idea, complete with company branding, a product line, market analysis, product nomenclature, and effective packaging. These points of emphasis revolved around creating a product and concepting a design that matches the packaging design well. Defining the distinctive nomenclature of the business and identifying the materials needed to create the product are critical tasks that were planned and identified.
Design Brief Essentuals is an all-organic massage oil company. The name Essentuals is a combination of the words essential and sensual. Branding for this product features hand-rendered doodle flowers. This floral theme was intended to create an overall naturally organic impression. With no outlines on the doodles, this makes the overall designs organic and natural. Using soft pastel colors helps to continue the natural look. Placing the logo and wordmark on the black background helps to make the colors and flowers stand out. This dark background makes the pastels pop off of the packaging. This is a product that would stand out on a shelf and a customer would be interested in looking at to see if it is something that they are interested in.

City Harvest
Food Desert Branding Design Objective The challenge of this project was to develop an easily identifiable brand for a non-profit organization that assists communities located in food desert areas. Researching food deserts and curating free stock photography to use is part of the ideation of the bi-fold brochure. The concept of the brand was then expanded into a microsite and volunteer pack.
Design Brief Designing the logo for this brand is centered around natural colors. The plant growing up in the middle of the cityscape is to draw attention to the importance of farmers and homegrown fresh fruits and vegetables. Using natural colors helps to show the importance of naturally grown food and the benefits it provides to those living in food deserts. The brochure is created to inform individuals about the efforts to reduce the number of food deserts as well as improve the lives of those without convenient access to nutritious food. Using stock photography helps to show the positive benefits of providing options for fresh food and creating motivation for volunteers. The volunteer pack includes reusable bags, buttons, pens, a USB flash drive, a notebook, and a drawstring bag. These items are all incorporated with the brand of the brochure and website.

Inkquery
for the tattoo curious Design Objective This project utilizes knowledge of design theory along with interactive design components to develop a user-centered approach in designing an app for smartphones. By using research, ideation, personas, wireframing, concepting, prototyping, and user testing, these preparations are intentional steps to further enhance the final design of the app. Creating a user-friendly experience defines the focal point of the design. Photo credit to Shannon Annas for some photography included in app design.
Design Brief Inquery was a multi-step development that encompasses research into user experiences, personas, and ideation. The primary mission for Inquery is to allow within proximity of the user to research local tattoo parlors and artists, within proximity of the user, regardless of the location within the United States. This app allows the user to create a profile for their personal use. While in this app, the user can search for tattoo artists based on the type of tattoo that they may be seeking. Users can click on specific types of tattoos desired, and the app will locate tattoo artists within the set mileage that specializes in that specific type. When a user selects the tattoo artists, the app allows him or her to look at some of the work completed by that artist. The access provided by the app also offers the option to schedule an appointment at an available time. The use of the colors is to stick with the traditional tattoo colors. The target audience of Inkquery is any tattoo enthusiast from 18—65 years old.
