BLONDIE TYPEFACE DESIGN & DIGITALIZATION | BRAND DESIGN
DESIGN OBJECTIVE Create a hand-rendered version and a digitized version of a typeface that is consistent and unique. The typeface is to be displayed in a booklet that includes the origin of the typeface, type anatomy, and an example of a brand that shows how the typeface could be used. CREATIVE BRIEF Blondie is a sans-serif typeface that has a simple, retro feel. This typeface design is unique because of its singular style that features a combination of upper and lowercase letters. The typeface is a tall, thin, bold type that is best featured as display type. The letter forms were created in Adobe Illustrator and then transformed into a typeface using an extension called Fontself.

Create die lines and produce each box. Display the brand for the products in a style guide and create a digital and print ad series for the products. The branding reflects a vintage barbershop style and is very masculine because of the dark colors and strong typography.

LILY MAE’S BOUQUETS BRAND DESIGN | PACKAGING | PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY | DIGITAL MARKETING
DESIGN OBJECTIVE The goal of this project was to gain an understanding of digital marketing efforts, brand identity, web design, and product production through creating a new subscription box company. This process included creating a cohesive brand identity, brand voice, curating and planning social media content for multiple platforms, producing one month’s box, and branding its components while also developing and designing a website for the brand.
CREATIVE BRIEF Lily Mae’s Bouquets is a flower subscription box company. The business is unique because of the heartfelt story behind its origin as well as the reason that Lily Mae, the owner, continues the business. She wants to honor her grandmother’s love for flowers and pass on the knowledge that her grandmother shared with her. The primary target audience is middle-aged women who enjoy receiving flowers and want to learn more about flowers and gardening. Lily Mae’s Bouquet’s branding is meant to convey casual sophistication. The logo mark is a floral bundle that represents the brand’s fun, playful side. The logotype is handwritten to allude to the personal touch with which each box is shipped. The flow of the type also adds a sense of elegance to the brand while the tagline typeface grounds the brand with its simplicity. The color palette is represented as various pinks and greens that are vivid and bright to convey a happy feeling when viewing the brand assets. Other forms of the floral elements are repeated in the secondary logos, patterns, and other graphic elements.

THE DIRT BUCKET BRAND DESIGN | WEB DESIGN
DESIGN OBJECTIVE Choose a household object to illustrate and graphically reduce. Using the graphically reduced version of the object, create a logo and brand identity for a business. Create a brand identity package for the business, including a business card, letterhead template, and a social media page. Create a branded microsite that is separate from the company website, but would lead customers to the main website.
CREATIVE BRIEF The Dirt Bucket is a landscaping and lawn care company. The graphically reduced wheelbarrow is represented in the negative space of a lime green circle. The dirt is displayed in a brown color for emphasis, and also has floral elements sprouting from the dirt to symbolize growth. The logotype is placed under the circle logo in the same lime green color, with “dirt” in the same brown color in the logo. The typeface chosen for the logotype is sans-serif, which is similar to the linework in the wheelbarrow graphic. The microsite is an expansion of the branding and includes tips for keeping your lawn looking great between lawn care appointments, and a graphic that mirrors the brand and creates interest on the page.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES SERIES POSTER SERIES DESIGN
DESIGN OBJECTIVE Create a poster series that displays the six Primary Principles of Design using cut paper. CREATIVE BRIEF Each primary principle of design is represented as a different cone of ice cream. A limited color palette was chosen to keep the pieces unified as a series. The typography chosen supports the vintage ice cream shop theme displayed throughout the posters. The cone, typography, and layout of each poster are consistent so that the ice cream stack and the portrayed flavor are the most dominant on each piece.

SEA GARDEN SCULPTURE SCULPTING
DESIGN OBJECTIVE To create a unique sculpture out of found objects. CREATIVE BRIEF During the Spring 2020 semester when classes were online, our professor had the members of the course make a sculpture out of objects found in our homes. This creative piece is very special to me because it includes the shells from my family’s last vacation together before my Dad passed away. The metal piece on the bottom is from my Dad’s shop, representing my father as the base of the sculpture. I arranged a variety of shells and sea glass to create an abstract floral scene, and I used wire to create tall flowers that sprout up out of the shells, representing the growth that comes from difficult times of loss.

SIGHTS OF SAVANNAH BRAND DESIGN | POSTER DESIGN
DESIGN OBJECTIVE Create a unique shop-local event and associated branding for the event. Expand the event concept and branding by creating an event map. The map should include a diagram representation of all locations that the event will include, icons that correspond with the overall branding, and information about the event.
CREATIVE BRIEF Sights of Savannah is a one-day tour of the highlights of the city, including restaurants, an art gallery, and a park. The branding is classic and soft, to represent the historical nature of the city. The logo mark is a graphic of a popular fountain at a park in Savannah. This iconic image of the city ties the branding to the architectural history and the tour because the park is one of the event’s stops. The logotype is classical and pairs well with the stroke weight of the logo mark. The map poster is an extension of the branding and includes the same color palette of blues and white while adding pops of yellow and green to give it some variation and interest. The additional colors help to create hierarchy and interest within the poster.

AGD REBRAND REBRANDING | PRODUCTION
DESIGN OBJECTIVE Create a fresh new brand, recruitment plan, and marketing plan for the Advertising & Graphic Design (AGD) Program at Catawba Valley Community College. Two teams of seven students were tasked with creating solutions for the best version of the AGD Program and space. After brainstorming, designing, producing, and pitching the design team’s ideas to a panel of administration and AGD alumni, a team would be chosen to implement these changes in the program.
CREATIVE BRIEF As one of the members of the chosen team for the AGD Rebrand process, I was a part of a team that successfully provided solutions for the AGD Program. The selected group delivered a fresh new brand, new recruitment materials, and the mission statement “Design, Develop, Deliver” that will be carried out through all marketing efforts. This phrase embodies what the AGD Program represents: graphic design, personal development, professional skills, and a supportive environment! As a part of this team, I participated in brainstorming and ideation for the new brand, production of marketing materials for the presentation, and I also designed the style guide and the new project sheets for the program. For the implementation of this new brand, I served as a Creative Director. My team’s focus was the AGD physical space. We rearranged furniture to best fit the program, organized some areas in the space, designed and installed large window perf graphics that branded the space, pitched some other unique ways to enhance the space, and created a look book template for the program.

AI MAGAZINE SPREAD PAGE LAYOUT | PHOTO MANIPULATION
DESIGN OBJECTIVE Design a four-page magazine spread and cover page for the Spring 2021 edition of Print Magazine. Use Adobe InDesign to design page layouts that present the given article and include appropriate photography and visual elements that relate to the article topic.
CREATIVE BRIEF This magazine spread has an eye-catching color palette of bright orange and teal. The main inspiration for this piece was the image of the eye presented on the magazine cover and the first page of the article. To make the color of the eye bold to fit the color palette and make all other aspects of the image black and white, Adobe Photoshop was used. This design choice emphasizes the color of the eye and helps keep the overall color palette consistent throughout the magazine spreads. All of the pages have triangular blocks of color to also maintain the consistency throughout. The cover features a Photoshop composite of multiple images to create interest in the article “Why We Need to Create AI That Thinks in Ways That We Can’t Even Imagine.”

EXPRESSIVE TYPOGRAPHY HAND-LET TERING
DESIGN OBJECTIVE Explore creativity with hand-lettering by choosing a quote to display in a unique hand-lettering style. CREATIVE BRIEF This piece was inspired by retro elements and colors. The quote chosen for this project was “Always be kinder than necessary.” A rough sketch of the quote was drawn before the final product to confirm the spacing and size of all of the letter forms. The hand-drawn, bubbly, retro type helps to convey the bold theme of the piece. The colors used in this piece are bright pink, orange, and yellow to emphasize the 70s aesthetic. The final hand-drawn version was taken into Adobe Illustrator to digitize it for a more refined result.

CATAWBA FARMS BRANDING AND CRAFT BEER SERIES PACKAGING DESIGN | BRAND DESIGN | PRINT PRODUCTION
DESIGN OBJECTIVE Design a series of craft beer labels for a local brewery’s release of new craft beers. Research the business and establish a design concept to carry through the series. Design and produce collateral that would support the design concept and pitch the labels and collateral to the client.
CREATIVE BRIEF The first step was to research other labels and the clients’ business as an entrepreneurial industry. The concept that was chosen highlights a part of history. Barn quilts were the inspiration for the theme of the overall series. Each of the six labels highlighted a symbol that was represented in a geometric, barn quilt style. Each can was differentiated by establishing the main color for each while keeping the typography and placement of items consistent throughout the series. After producing the beer can labels and applying them to cans for prototypes, some additional collateral pieces were added to support the concept. The series design was pitched to a panel that included the clients and faculty members from Catawba Valley Community College. After pitching the concept, our group was chosen, from a total of four groups, to work with the clients to implement the label designs and concept into their business. During this time, we also developed a new generation of their current logo and designed secondary logos to represent the different avenues of their business.

DESIGN LEGEND BROCHURE PAGE LAYOUT
DESIGN OBJECTIVE Research a well-known, influential designer and create a unique, folded print piece. The piece should respectfully reflect the chosen designer’s style and display information about the designer and their work.
CREATIVE BRIEF Paula Scher is a graphic designer with a very distinct and bold style. The unique accordion fold of the piece highlights the designer’s name in bold letters on the front and opens from the center to showcase her work. She uses bold typography in her work that is mirrored in the choice of type for the front covers of the brochure. On the inside, some of her famous work is highlighted, along with some information about her and her graphic design career. The bold blocks of color used on the inside of the piece complement her style and help showcase her work and the information in the brochure. The back of the brochure includes an arrangement of some of her most famous logos and design work. This display of Scher’s style adds interest to the overall piece and helps highlight the techniques of Paula Scher and her work.

SIT & STAY UX/UI DESIGN | USER TESTING | BRAND DESIGN
DESIGN OBJECTIVE Research and develop a unique app concept and design an interface that is functional and visually pleasing to best fit the concept. The app should solve a specific problem and be designed with the end-user of the app in mind. CREATIVE BRIEF The concept for Sit & Stay is a vet check-in app that allows pet owners to check in their pet at the vet from the comfort of their car to avoid waiting in busy waiting rooms. The interface is very simple to use, and pet-themed to appeal to pet owners. It has a bright color palette of orange and light blue. Adobe Illustrator was used to create the graphics and overall brand of the app, and Adobe XD was used to create a prototype of the app and work through the screen flow. After completing the prototype, user testing was performed and feedback was given to make the app as successful as possible. This project was pitched to a panel of nine judges made up of industry professional, program alumni, and college administration in a Shark Tank style presentation.

JASON DENVER BIOGRAPHY
BIOGRAPHY
Jason is 25 years old and lives in St. Louis, Missouri. He is currently an AT&T Customer Service Representative and spends most of his time in his apartment because of his job. He is single and moved to St. Louis after he graduated college a couple of years ago. Even though he is away from his family, in Ohio, he enjoys the city and the people he has met there. He recently decided that he wanted to get a pet to keep him company since he stays at home a lot. He adopted a puppy from a friend and named her Bella. He has never owned a dog before and has a lot to learn about taking care of one.
Gabrielle Dawson is 33 years old and lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. She works part-time at a veterinary hospital and is enrolled in NC State’s Veterinary School where she plans to earn a degree and become a veterinarian. She is married and has a 2-year-old boy named Max. Her family, school, and job keep her schedule very busy. She is dedicated to her life goal of being a veterinarian and is motivated to achieve that goal. She has always loved working with animals and enjoys the hands-on experience of working at the veterinary hospital part-time. One thing that she notices when people come in for their pet appointment is that both the pet and the owner are distraught because of the wait. Because she is outgoing and caring, she is customer satisfaction oriented. She wants to help in any way that she can to ease the vet experience for both the pet and the owner. She has several pets of her own and knows what it’s like to take animals that don’t behave well to the vet. An app that makes the vet check-in process better for the patients, would be beneficial to her, the vet tech, because the pet and the owner would both be more calm and cooperative during the appointment.

His main goal at this point in his life is to save up money for his plans and possibly move to a supervisor position in the Customer Service System at AT&T. He is very driven and wants to get things done efficiently. This is the reason that he is great at customer service and why an app that makes the vet appointment check-in process more efficient, is great for a person like Jason. He is always looking for new apps and programs to make every aspect of his life simpler and easier.

She is concerned about taking her cat to the vet because he is getting older and does not tolerate being around other animals. She is afraid that if they have to wait too long in the lobby area, her cat will be unmanageable by the time they get to a room for the appointment. An app that simplified the check-in process would be beneficial to her so that her cat could remain calm. If the cat were to be too upset it may affect the quality and effectiveness of her appointment that day.
