Subscription Box

Treasure Quest Design Objective: Research subscription boxes to find possibilities for nonexistent examples. After determining a viable option, the assignment directed the creation of the subscription box, a search for content materials, the design of social media pages, and the development of a marketing booklet for the package. A webpage was also created to display the social media efforts and display the monthly fee for the subscription. Design Brief: Treasure Quest is a board game/table-top RPG subscription box. Treasure Quest is derived from fantasy gameplay where the objective is a treasure, and the journey to reach that treasure is through a quest. In conceptualizing the packaging for the box, the packaging consisted of bright blue, orange, yellow, and pink. Dice, pawns, and some fundamental gaming elements were pulled for the imagery on the box. This imagery was chosen to match our target audience’s interests. The target audience for Treasure Quest is young males aged 16-25 with disposable income. Once decided upon, the physical box style, logo, and pattern choice was created—photographs of the box were then taken to be used in creating social media graphics. Social media posts for Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook were made for Treasure Quest. The web page was created to add another element of branding for the box and show the subscription service’s price points.

Household Item Graphic Reduction

Wash Wizard Design Objective: Take an everyday item and turn it into a logo. After converting the object into a logo, then create a business based on it. Additionally, create an animation to promote our company.

Design Brief: Wash Wizard is a Laundromat based in Boulder, Colorado. Wash Wizard aims to bring the old act of going to the laundromat and modernize it, while also maintaining a fair price. The target audience of Wash Wizard is college students attending the University of Colorado, who require a local laundromat that will not only finically meet their needs but is also sensitive to modernization. The process began by choosing ten items around the house and sketching these items. Through drawing them, the most visually interesting was then chosen. In looking at a washing machine, it was determined that many styles could apply to a washing machine. Names were then brainstormed to match the multiple techniques that could be used for the household item. Wash Wizard was chosen, and to tie the name in the logo together, the washing machine was designed after a crystal ball.

Type Layout

Data Today Design Objective: Practice type layout by creating a visually pleasing layout for a four-page article spread, sidebar article, headings, pull quotes, and compelling photography. An animated cover was developed to expand upon the branding further.

Design Brief: Data Today is a technology-based magazine that wants to bring the news of the future to people today. The cover of Data Today features a robotic-like person with a virtual reality headset. The animated cover features the background developing and shifting into an alternative location. This is to simulate virtual reality simplistically.

Shop Local campaign

Cycle and Snap Design Objective: Create an event to boost tourism for a chosen city. For the city, create an event that could feature local shops, restaurants, and famous tourist spots. Design a map and poster to encourage tourists to visit the city.

Design Brief: The event Cycle and Snap is a bicycling tour accompanied by photography, centered in Dublin, Ireland. A map to show the route with stops along the way for the local businesses was designed for tourists. A poster was created that displayed the path and points of interest to promote the event. Cycle and Snap’s logo consisted of cool tone colors. The emblem features both bicycle spokes and a camera—accompanying icons to indicate the various activities also had to match the branding.

Craft Beer

Catawba Farms Design Objective: My team visited with clients from Catawba Farms to discuss potential branding for their beer line. We conceptualized beer labels, a keg collar, and a draft pull template for the brewery. We also had to create additional promotional items. My team came up with the idea to feature the Catawba Valley in our design. We used bright colors for the design to give the cans a playful feel. We also included imagery to fit each beer name and story.

Design Brief: My specific role within this project was to create some of the imagery on the can. I made patterns for the background of each can that included ingredients found in the corresponding beer. I started the layout for the keg collar that we presented to the client and my team and collaborated to create the finished product. For the promotional items, I also pitched to my team to make a branded cooler. I designed the layout with my team, and we produced it in-house.

CVCC Art Show

Vision Design Objective: Create a theme for Catawba Valley Community College’s upcoming art show. Create a legacy theme that would apply to this year and years to come. Develop a name that could carry over into the future. The physical collateral consisted of postcards, banners, posters, and a website promoting the students and the art show.

Design Brief: The process began by brainstorming and coming up with names that would apply to Visual Art, Advertising + Graphic Design, and Photographic Technology. “Vision” was chosen as the naming convention to represent the different programs because Vision is vital in all the featured fields of study. In addition to the naming convention, a Photoshop composite was created that would encompass all of the three programs. An eye is composed of a camera lens, drawing, and coding to make up the three departments within the composition. The logo “Vision” was kept simple so that it would easily fit with the future themes. The color palette is purple and pink to give off a futuristic feel.

Storybook composite

The Shoemaker and the Elves Design Objective: Take a fairy tale, along with a movie genre at random. Create three Photoshop composites of scenes from the story with those two elements in mind, using royalty-free photographs to compose the images.

Design Brief: Create a storyline of ideas for the scenes; once three scenes were decided upon, gather photographs and manipulate them to form a scene. The first scene portrays the shoemaker’s workshop so that viewers could put themselves in the story. To create the illusion of nighttime adjustment, layers were used. The second scene is the elves dancing on the window sill by using silhouettes to create the illusion of shadows. The last scene is the elves hiding from the old couple in the story, for this composite. Many clipping masks were used to create the scene. To enhance the project further, the cover art was developed. Simplified versions of tools were used to pique the interest of young children who will read the story.

Re-branding

AGD Re-brand Design Objective: The AGD Rebrand was a group effort to pull it off. My team, consisting of myself and six others, were given the task to conceptualize a new brand for the Advertising and Graphic Design Program at Catawba Valley Community College. We created a microsite, recruitment video, promotional items, poster, and social media posts to present our idea for the rebrand. We presented all our collateral to our professors, alumni, and school superiors. Design Brief: My role in our group was to create mockups for the promotional items, interview the alumni, film, and edit the recruitment video. My main task was to focus on the recruitment video. In the video, I interviewed first-year, secondyear, and past students of the AGD program. This was to highlight the maturity of a designer throughout the program. Additional branding for the AGD Rebrand was developed in the form of a podcast. The Super Thursday Podcast was created to promote the Advertising + Graphic Design program and the students in the program. Within the podcast, I work on filming and editing the podcast footage.

App Prototyping

Moti Buddi Design Objective: Find apps that do not currently exist in the market. This design opportunity was a practice in UX/UI design. Prototype an app as well as design it for a target market. Throughout the whole process, focus on user experience.

Design Brief: Moti Buddi is a motivational app designed for children. This tool encourages children to do their daily chores by giving them a companion that also does tasks. In order to understand how children and parents would perceive Moti Buddi, personas were created to understand the user better. Personas are giving a member of the target audience a face, name, and personality. It is a way to understand customers better. Sketches, wireframes, skins, and then actually prototyping the app followed personas. After all of this was done, I had an opportunity to present Moti Buddi to a panel at CVCC’s Advertising and Graphic design shark tank. In this presentation, Moti Buddi tied for first place for concept and design.

Independent Study

City PostCards Design Objective: The independent project I chose to do was a Postcard/ City promotion collateral. I wanted to take cities I found very interesting and graphically reduce them to fit a postcard. Also, to show off a few of my multimedia skills, I decided to make a digital postcard with animation. Design Brief: This project started from practice in shape building. I made the city of London in Adobe illustrator, and I decided to expand it into two additional cities, Tokyo and Sydney further. I enjoy illustration and animation, so that was the driving force behind my decision to do this independent project.
