Cortipril

Pharmaceutical Branding

Design Objective The objective was to develop the branding for a new pharmaceutical. The branding included a logo, tagline, and a modular tradeshow booth to be used in traveling tradeshows to appeal to doctors and hospitals.

Design Brief Cortipril treats depression and anxiety, so the design needed to deliver a message of hope and strength with the branding. The logo used a circular design to symbolize a neuron. This design uses a calming and hopeful blue. The slogan “Understand and Overcome emphasizes the message of educating the consumer about the product. The tradeshow booth combines these ideas using a blue color and circular shapes to create unity in the design. Facts about depression and anxiety found in the left panel help the viewer to understand Cortipril and how it can help them.

East to West Tea Packaging

Design Objective The objective was to design branding and packaging for a product utilizing skills in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The packaging had to be a set of two different styles of the same product and should follow any branding guidelines that were developed as part of the project.

Design Brief This design was for two boxes of tea for a company named East to West. The box for green tea stands out with two shades of green while the black tea box uses two shades of brown. The repeating elements of the compass rose underneath the design and pattern of a topographic map inside the boxes creates unity across the packaging and clearly identifies both boxes as belonging to the brand of the East to West Tea Company.

Red Hawk Red Design Objective The objective of this design was to develop the branding of a wine label and packaging for a new wine made by Catawba Farms in partnership with the CVCC Alumni Association. This design was co-created by Aylin Mendoza of mndza designs. The branding included a logo, label, and a three-tier packaging solution to help market to the community.

Design Brief The logo design started with a feather to symbolize a hawk. By using Gestalt principles, the silhouette of a hawk landing on a branch was added to the feather to create the final logo for the design. The design uses a unique die-cut on a single wrap-around label to allude to the spread wings of a hawk in flight. The neck tag was designed with a die-cut across the bottom to make the shape of a hawk’s head. When placed in the right position on the neck, the dye-cut creates a similar silhouette of a hawk in flight.

Social Issue Posters Design Objective The objective was to create a series of three posters that brought awareness to a specific social issue. The posters had to share a common theme and portray a clear concept in order to bring attention to the issues.

Design Brief The design for these posters focused on poverty and broke that down into the three issues: Homelessness, Overpopulation, and Starvation. The concept of these posters was to reflect on your perception of poverty. The posters each included a mirror that was reflecting an image related to their issue instead of the image of the viewer. This was intended to send a powerful message about how we are always looking at ourselves when there are so many people out there that need help.

Geometric Portraits

Design Objective The objective was to use graphic reduction to create a geometric self-portrait and celebrity portrait. The project utilized Adobe Illustrator software and a series of hand-rendered ideation on the final design.

Design Brief The posters used images cropped above the shoulders to bring highlight the details in each face. These images are by GabboT - Death of Stalin 02, CC BY-SA 2.0, found at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index. php?curid=64461706, and a personal image taken by myself. By using tints and analogous colors, I was able to clearly illustrate the shadows and lines in each face despite only using geometric shapes. Once each portrait was finalized, I used a stylized background to ground the figure and to enhance the unity.

Louisville Racers

Design Objective The objective was to develop the branding for a professional sports team. The branding should include a team name, logo, wayfinding elements, and environmental graphics that engage the audience and establish trust and loyalty with stakeholders.

Primary Logo

Design Brief By placing the NHL team in Louisville, Kentucky, a need was filled for a major league sport in a city that already loves sporting events. The horse logo and team name “Racers” draw on the influence of the Kentucky Derby without creating too much overlap. The logo utilizes sharp angles and straight lines to give it an intimidating feel that is common is most NHL logos. The lightning bolts in the horse’s mane create a strong icon that you see repeated in several places across the wayfinding and environmental graphics.

Animal Hybrid and Magazine Spread Design Objective The objective was to create a magazine spread for a children’s magazine showing artwork and Photoshop manipulated images of animal hybrids requested by the children. Photoshop was used to create the animal hybrids while Adobe InDesign was used to create the spread for the magazine.

Design Brief The design includes both a hand drawn image and a Photoshop image of multiple animal hybrids. Each created animal consists of two different animals. The first is a combination of a buffalo and a gorilla. The second piece is a combination of an alligator and a turtle. I made use of the tools in Adobe Photoshop to patch several photos together to create unique designs for each hybrid after creating an initial illustration by hand. The end works will be displayed in a magazine spread created for children.

Augmented Reality Album Cover Design Objective The objective was to create an album cover utilizing photography selections and digital assets to match the chosen music genre. A multimedia component of augmented reality was incorporated into the design to engage the target audience.

Design Brief This design uses a watercolor style image with a double exposure. The bright colors reflect both the vibe and theme of the album’s music. Unity is brought to the design through the reoccurring use of watercolor paint splotches to achieve a new and unique form of multimedia. The augmented reality elements create interactivity by using the front of the album cover and the Adobe Aero app.

Nevermore Book Cover Design Objective The objective was to create an image for a book jacket by combining various mixed media components through Photoshop. The final design was to include a front, back, and spine on the book jacket.

Design Brief The design was developed as a book jacket for an anthology of Edgar Allen Poe’s work. It was inspired by his poem “The Raven.” Just like in the poem, the raven is used as the central image on the cover’s design. The imagery of a lamp and a wooden door are used as supports. By using script in the background, the design was given contrast and the illusion of an aged manuscript to link it to the era when the poems were written. The design was unified by encasing the book jacket using a ripped paper texture and a purple theme to emphasize the macabre style of Poe’s writing.

Any logo used should have no less than 1/5 of the logo height worth of space on all sides.

Area Fizzy1 Design Objective The objective was to develop the branding, branding guidelines, and packaging for a “sweet treat business. The branding had to include a name, logo, patterns, and packaging that is appealing.

Design Brief The business developed for this design was Area Fizzy1, a craft soda shop and bottling company. The name Area Fizzy1 was developed as a parody of sorts to area 51, the most widely known research facility in the US. The logo continues this concept by incorporating a Flying Saucer, futuristic type, and what looks to be military signage into the design. This top-secret military feel continues throughout the packaging and into the style guide, which is designed to look like a top-secret folder full of sensitive information.
