Graphic Reduction Design Objective Develop a brand based on a graphically reduced household object. The logo should work with two colors. Along with the logo, an identity package and animation must be created to support the brand. The identity package should consist of a letterhead, business card, presentation folder, and an envelope. The animation is required to be five seconds in length at 30 fps.

Design Brief Unhinged is a unique brand based on a graphically reduced lock concept. The lock was utilized to create the concept of a divorce party planning service. The logomark of Unhinged uses an upside down lock shape to form the U of Unhinged. Within this logomark, the shape of a diamond ring is used to emphasize the marriage aspects of the brand. The clever tagline provides an uplifting tone to the otherwise serious subject matter. A rounded sansserif typeface was used for the primary typeface to fit into modern trends and to give the brand a more relaxed approach, along with a simpler sans serif typeface for the tagline. The logo of Unhinged utilizes a cool-toned green to appear neutral yet comforting for clients that may have mixed emotions about their divorce. The identity package focuses on the colors of the Unhinged brand and the logomark for familiarity. The Unhinged logo animation features the logo parts coming into the scene one at a time to form the logo. In addition to the other parts of the brand, a 3D printed paperweight was created to showcase the brand’s logomark. The applications utilized include Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Animate.

Packaging Design Objective Develop a brand for a package that could be found within a store. The packaging must include two products that are a part of the same series.

Design Brief Seaboat Joe’s is a brand based on smoked canned oysters as they are often overlooked by the average consumer. Seaboat Joe’s has a focus on the nautical elements of the product and features illustrations intended to stand out from competitors. A slab serif typeface, vivid colors, and the style of illustration highlight the nautical feel of Seaboat Joe’s and pays homage to classic animations. To fit into the quirky nature of the brand, the names chosen for the variety of flavors of Seaboat Joe’s smoked canned oysters are fun and whimsical, such as “Chummy Curry” and “Reelin’ Cajun.” The applications utilized include Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Dimension.


Celebrity Illustration Design Objective Create an illustration based on a pop-culture icon and digitize them in a unique art style.

Design Brief The Weeknd was chosen for this project to reimagine him and his album, After Hours, in a brand new way. A duotone purple and blue color palette and cel-shaded art style was utilized to reinforce the 80s feeling of the album. The illustration of The Weeknd was carried on into a conceptual vinyl record cover, backstage pass, t-shirt, and concert tickets. For the copy on the pieces, The Weeknd’s typography used within many of his marketing materials was used. This includes the sans serif typefaces for body copy and logo. For the other type, a ball serif was utilized to emphasize the age conveyed throughthe design. The applications utilized include Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.


Shop Local Event Design Objective Develop an event concept featuring establishments local to the decided area. Along with the event concept, create a logo, illustrated map, and icon set to support the event within a poster.

Design Brief Passing Through Paris is an event based in France that takes tourists to several local eating establishments to try culturally significant foods. The logo of Passing Through Paris features the Eiffel tower to immediately remind consumers that the event takes place in Paris along with typography that combines a sophisticated serif primary type and a modern sans serif secondary type. The colors used for the event are blues, purples, and off whites to create a simple, elevated, and luxurious color palette. The iconography used within the poster is derived from the purpose of each establishment along the path of the event. Along with the event poster and branding, several items were designed to be souvenirs for guests of the event, including coasters, a wine glass, and a tote bag. The applications utilized include Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.


Video Game Menu Design Objective Develop an animation of a conceptual video game main menu. A logo should be created for the game, along with complimentary UI elements.

Design Brief Mainframe— The Acolytes is a conceptualized cult horror science fiction video game set within space and revolving around the elements seen within the main menu. The logo utilizes a sans serif typeface along with light grey and green to fit into the science fiction setting. Distortion was applied to the serif subtitle to make it represent the cult horror aspects of the game. The buttons and settings menu within the main menu are designed to represent typical science fiction holograms with the colors and effects applied to them. The cursor was added to the final animation to showcase button states and interaction with the menu. To complete the main menu, royalty-free music was added that supported the game’s ambiance. Along with the main menu animation, the box and disc for the game were designed to expand on the premise. The applications utilized include Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Animate.

Digital Art Design Objective Create a digital art piece using Adobe Photoshop of an original concept and composition.

Design Brief The Dragon Over The Eclipse is a Photoshop composite featuring a dragon flying over a forest with an eclipse above it, making the dragon appear as a silhouette. The painting features a high contrast orange and purple color palette to emphasize the power of the dragon and create dominance over the scene. The dragon element of the image was created in Adobe Illustrator as a silhouette that could then have effects and textures applied to it to allow it blend into the rest of the piece. The applications utilized include Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.


Process


Magazine Layout Design Objective Develop the layout for the feature article within a magazine and the cover of the magazine itself. The article that must be used and edited is ,”Why we need to create AI that thinks in ways that we can’t even imagine,” by Kevin Kelly. Along with the page layout, a Photoshop composite should be created for the magazine’s cover to relate to the article.

Design Brief This magazine article was built on two spreads and featured an article cover on the first page of the article. Due to the article’s focus on AI, a blue and orange color palette and sans serif typography was used to fit into modern tech trends. The images used within the spreads are focused on people and their interactions with AI, mainly with the use of phones and programming. The composite for the front of the cover uses a surrealist style featuring a woman’s body with a machine for a brain to symbolize AI and the connection with humans. The applications utilized include Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop.


Program Rebrand Design Objective Rebrand Catawba Valley Community College’s (CVCC) Advertising and Graphic Design (AGD) program. Teams of seven should create ideas for how to reimagine the space, the brand, and several other elements of the program.

Design Brief The AGD rebrand allowed for new life and color to be added to the program. The team decided on adding an aqua color to the program’s palette as well as a tint of that color for variety. The logo for the rebrand features the sans serif letters of the program with an offset outline to modernize the logo as well as the “Design, Develop, Deliver,” tagline and the full name of the program. Pieces showcased here include the poster, iconography, the process logo, buttons, stickers, the QR code sticker, the booklet, and the brochure guide to the program. These items were all designed with the brand’s logo in mind in order to be consistent in design. Along with design, production was a major factor in the completion of the rebrand. The applications utilized include Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop.


Subscription Box Design Objective Develop a brand and conceptualize a subscription box that the brand would produce. Develop a physical version of the box along with a brand style guide and a website for consumers to purchase the box.

Design Brief Monmons, short for Monthly Monsters, is a monthly subscription box that delivers pop-culture monster merchandise to consumers every month. The logo for Monmons has a scaled egg as the logomark to represent dragon eggs and tie fantasy into the brand. A sans serif typeface was used as the primary type in order to keep the logo simple with a tagline in a slab serif secondary type. The physical box consists of a cardboard box with the brand logo elements around it as well as an egg that the items for the month would be within. For the website components and brand style guide, the orange and blue colors were used along with a simple scale pattern to add visual interest. The applications utilized include Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe XD, and Adobe Photoshop.

Beer Can Series Design Objective Develop a consistent series of beer can labels representing six different flavors for The Winery and Brewery at Catawba Farms. Along with the can label designs, create collateral items, including a keg collar, tap pull, and stickers that match with the labels.

Design Brief The beer can designs the team created were focused on being simple, modern, and clean. The palette used within each can’s design was monochromatic to keep the designs simple with a rainbow of colors being formed when the entire series is together. The differentiated colors worked as a way for people to easily recognize the beer that they or someone else was drinking. The elements used within each beer include a central rolling hill in the background and a minimalistic symbol for the beer’s flavor. The typography used includes two sans serif typefaces, a cleaner one for copy, and a textured typeface to pull in more of the farm aspects. For the collateral items, the team kept the design consistent by using the colors and elements from the beer labels. The draft pull was created out of wood and 3D printed resin as a prototype to display the idea of the team. To expand on this project, a cooler was designed as an accessory for the series. Production of iconography stickers and other physical elements were included within the pitch to The Winery and Brewery at Catawba Farms.
