Humanitea Spice Co. ●Design Objective Create a unique monthly, quarterly, or annual subscription box. The subscription box should be produced with one of the month’s contents inside. Produce the box using dielines. Create and populate their social media profiles with engaging content, and compile findings into a Digital Marketing Case Study. A website prototype should be created for the subscription boxes using images of the box and multiple pages of content.

●Design Brief Humanitea Spice Co. is a tea and spice monthly subscription box that strives to educate consumers on how to utilize the power of spices and teas. The Humanitea logo is a teacup with a cross and a pestle sitting inside. The teacup is surrounded by ripples that resemble a saucer using figure-ground. The company is dedicated to reliable and safe sourcing of materials that strive to be waste-free or sustainable. The box comes with three teas and three spices along with recipe cards. It also contains swag items such as stickers and a box of tea filters for those who do not use loose-leaf tea. The Humanitea website’s homepage introduces the box and showcases user-generated content from their social media. The shop page allows you to purchase bulk spices, extra tea filters, and artisan-made goods, and the explore page teaches visitors about the spices. Social media marketing was also explored to determine the best platform to post based on the target audience. thebarnettstudio.com

AGD Rebrand ●Design Objective The Advertising and Graphic Design (AGD) Program at Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) is determined to rebrand the program identity. This update includes a new logo, newly branded collateral, a new recruitment package, and a rebranded space. The design required incorporating the predetermined “AGD green” color but may include new colors.

●Design Brief The newly rebranded logo incorporates a geometric typeface to signify the structure and organization of a left-brain thinker. While the slightly offset line work represents the creative right-brain thinkers, both logical and creative thinkers thrive in the program. The tagline chosen for this rebrand is “Design, Develop, Deliver” and is the basis for the corresponding graphics. The tagline ties back to the creative process the program follows as well as the three stages in which students participate in the program: a first-year student, a second-year student, and alumni. This progressive development is further represented through the rebranded icons that all mimic the triangle shape and share the color palette of the rebranded logo. The image of a triangular ruler is used to represent “Design”, a pen tool for “Develop”, and a paper airplane for “Deliver”.

Hand-Lettered Quote ●Design Objective Create a hand-lettered typography piece using a quote, phrase, or lyric. Keep the styling consistent and explore hierarchy using type. Display a commercial use for the piece.

●Design Brief The phrase used here is a quote from Elizabeth Gilbert in the book Eat, Pray, Love: “Stop wearing your Wishbone where your Backbone ought to be.” The style of this is reminiscent of the gilded manuscripts in the days before the printing press. Those hand-drawn works of art took whole lifetimes to create. The Blackletter typeface for the words “Wishbone” and “Backbone” is a sturdy, heavy font that represents the strength of a backbone and the quote itself. A simpler font with similar stroke variations and slanted terminals was used for the “Stop wearing your” and “ought to be” words to compliment the style of the aforementioned blackletter typeface. To create continuity throughout the piece some of the terminals and descenders on the letters extend into thin, curled flourishes. The color scheme is neutral black, tan, gray, and gold. The gold is meant to mimic the look of the actual gold leaf used in old manuscripts. This quote means an individual must replace wistfulness with courage to succeed. A backbone, albeit unseen, represents a person’s core belief; without it, one cannot stand up for what they believe in. thebarnettstudio.com

Helix Dry Bar & Salon ●Design Objective Create a branded identity package using a graphically reduced household object. Use at least one Gestalt Theory in the design. Create a full-color and one-color version of the logo, a business card, and letterhead. To add to the brand, animate the finished logo and code a responsive microsite to house it.

●Design Brief The logomark is a curling iron in the wand-style and a strand of hair wrapped in a helical motion around it, hence the brand name Helix. In this finished mark, the Gestalt Theory continuation is present. The full-color logo is one color—purple—at separate tint levels while the single color logo involves linework to convey the same effect using shape. The logotype “helix” is connected to the mark by the strand of hair wrapping around the barrel and seamlessly flowing into the “h”. The script typeface used complements the curves in the hair strand and fits directly into the mark. The logo features animated sound effects in time with the movement. All sound effects used were produced and recorded in-house. Helix Dry Bar & Salon is launching its new haircare line. To advertise these products a responsive microsite was created, showcasing a time-period hair contest with rules and a form to enter. Extra graphics and photo manipulations were also used to elevate the site.

Magazine Layout ●Design Objective Create an appealing magazine cover for Print Magazine showcasing the main inner article using three to five photos for a composite. Using typography and visual hierarchy, create the layout for the given article. In the layout, include a sidebar and a pull quote related to the article given. All imagery should be cohesive and enhance the article enticing readers.

●Design Brief A magazine layout was created using the article titled “Machines Might Actually be Better than Humans at Creativity” which is about artificial intelligence. The imagery used draws on technology and electronics. The photo composite created for the main image inside the article, and the cover of the magazine is a robot hand and a human hand reaching towards each other. This motion is meant to resemble The Creation of Adam painting. This ties back to the article title as well comparing the action of the robot to an artistic activity such as painting. All other imagery included relates to technology and has been manipulated to fit the chosen color scheme.

Typeface Design ●Design Objective Using knowledge of type anatomy, create a unique typeface design. Specify the classification and use known relationships between letterforms to create a cohesive typeface design. Create a type specimen poster and booklet showcasing the unique typeface anatomy.

●Design Brief Cetacea is a decorative serif typeface with unique features. The serifs on the end of each letterform are curved out on either side to a point and where they meet in the middle, they curve down. In this way, the serifs mimic the look of a whale tail. The name Cetacea is the scientific term for the class of aquatic mammals such as whales or dolphins. This typeface is capital letters only and should be used as a display typeface. The stroke weight varies from the vertical strokes to the horizontal strokes of letters such as K, Z, L, and F. There are several decorative elements to the design such as the crossbar in the A and the tail of the Q. The counters shown in the letterforms O, B, P, R, and Q are small and appear to be swallowed by the heavy stroke weight. The booklet and poster use the word WHALE to showcase the type anatomy of Cetacea.

Craft Beer Series ●Design Objective The Brewery at Catawba Farms is a local brewery that is looking to add made-in-house craft beers to its menu. The company already has five predetermined beer flavors and names. Catawba Farms requires a series of beer can labels that match their aesthetic. They request that the Catawba Farms typeface and a short story relating to the beer be used in the can design. The principal owners have provided the short stories, ingredients per beer, and the TTB government guidelines.

●Design Brief The Brewery at Catawba Farms prides itself on being a local brewery that sources its ingredients within 100 miles of the facility. This design highlights that unique selling point for the brewery by showcasing the cities in Catawba County. Along with their featured city, each can has a monochromatic color palette and a singular larger element pulled from the short stories on the backs of the cans. While each can is connected via the roads, they also all feature repeating graphic elements, such as the bales of hay, stalks of wheat, fences, and houses. These elements help to portray the cans as a cohesive series. The branded collateral pieces chosen to represent this design were coasters, etched pint glasses, tasting cards, and a large-scale poster. These particular pieces of collateral were selected because the roads can easily connect in the same way the design of the cans illustrate, unifying the products. thebarnettstudio.com

Honos Golf ●Design Objective Create a branded product line that contains a series of at least two products. This company product line must include a logo, color palette, along with two accompanying patterns. Create the dielines for the packages, and build the prototypes.

●Design Brief Honos Golf is a golf company that derives its name from the Roman god of military virtue and it is where the word honor comes from. This name evokes a feeling of regality and sophistication. The logomark is an eagle in profile with a golf club resting diagonally across it; the full logo is surrounded by a laurel wreath with the logotype underneath. This design pulls from the symbols associated with the deity. A simplified version of the logo was required to be used on products such as golf shirts, gloves, and the golf balls sold in the package. The two packages are a line of performance-based golf balls. Each package has the same layout, but certain elements on the boxes are different colors. The “Pro-Control” ball is accented with purple, while the “Long Distance” ball is accented with green. The front has a die-cut window for the balls inside to show through. This gives the boxes an interactive element. The patterns used in conjunction with these products have an elegant feel to them. They are geometric in nature and interlock with one another. These patterns are used on the inside of the package with colors that correspond with the product inside. thebarnettstudio.com

SkillsUSA Pin Design ●Design Objective Create a design that represents North Carolina for the 2021 SkillsUSA state-wide competition. If chosen, this design will be produced in the form of an enamel pin for the SkillsUSA national competition and traded with other states for their design.

●Design Brief North Carolina is, among many other things, resilient and steadfast. The main focus of this design was to represent NC in a way that shows where she came from. This pin represents North Carolina through the design of a permanently docked battleship in Wilmington. This battleship was used in World War II to defend the country as a protector of aircraft carriers. She also later served as a training vessel for the United States Navy. As a major player in the war, the battleship survived and was returned to her home state in 1962 and is now a state memorial to WWII veterans. This pin design has a unique feature with the addition of an anchor showcasing the competition year attached by a real chain. This secondary element has a pin of its own that can be placed alongside the larger battleship pin when worn. Like North Carolina, this ship has stood the test of time and is recognizable to many who live here. The battleship stands for community, strength, and endurance. We are an old state with an extensive history that has shaped us into the fearless people we are and this pin design is truly reflective of all that North Carolina is today. thebarnettstudio.com

Design Legend Brochure ●Design Objective Research a graphic design legend and create a custom folded print piece as an informational tribute. This brochure design should showcase the designer’s work and use corresponding graphics, type, and color palette to their known style. Research and write about their career and contribution to the industry.

●Design Brief Susan Kare is the graphic design legend who created icons for the original Macintosh computer in 1984. She started her career at Apple in 1983 as a screen graphics and digital font designer for “The Computer for the Rest of Us” as it was called. Not long after starting her career at Apple, she was promoted to Creative Director of Apple Creative Services. Her original marketing materials are still used in many computer graphics tools such as the Lasso, Grabber, and Paint Bucket Tools. Susan’s influence on the design world paved the way for modern iconography in the digital age. This brochure shows the use of her iconography in its original form and also as it stands today. The front of the brochure shows Kare in 1983 working at Apple surrounded by her revolutionary designs at the time, while the back shows her most recent photo and icon designs taken from her current website. The fold also uses repeating square motifs to tie back to the pixel-based icons from her career with Apple.

M.U.A.H. ●Design Objective Create a unique app that solves a problem. Design the app’s logo and matching iconography for all aspects of the app concept. Produce a functioning prototype of the app and use it to conduct a survey for user testing. Then compile all findings and research into a branded booklet.

●Design Brief M.U.A.H. is an acronym for Makeup Application Help and meant to help a makeup novice or curious creative easily apply their makeup. M.U.A.H.’s logo is a simple continuous line drawing meant to encompass each section of the face. By using a neutral color palette, M.U.A.H. represents anyone of any ethnicity or background. Each icon was created with a rough organic quality to signify how the makeup looks in its natural state. M.U.A.H. is a subscription-based app updated monthly for $1.99 that allows users to quickly recreate a variety of makeup looks ranging from simple to complex. A free version of the app contains basic looks with instructions for a makeup beginner.
