ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT AFTER LIVING ON A PRE-PANDEMIC AND PANDEMIC WORLD AND THE DIFFERENCES THAT THIS TWO BRINGS, I WANT TO TAKE THIS PROJECT TO A PERSONAL SIDE OF ME, THE CONNECTION WITH THE OCEAN AND ITS POSITIVITIES RELATED WITH A LIFE IN A POST-PANDEMIC TIME WHERE WHAT EVERYONE WANTS IS , TO FIND A PLACE WHERE TO HAVE FUN, RELAX AND ENJOY YOURSELF, LEARNING AND INTERACTING WITH OTHERS WITHOUT CONSTRAINS AND RULES. I WANT TO DESIGN A PLACE WHERE EVRYONE IS WELCOME, A PLACE WHERE HUMANS WILL LEARN TO APPRECIATE NATURE, CARE, AND RESPECT IT. A SPACE WHERE STUDY AND REASERCH FOR MARINE LIFE AND ECOSYSTEMS IS THE MAIN IMPORTANCE SO WE CAN LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES ALREADY DONE AND IMPROVE OUR DAILY LIFE RESPECTING THE NATURE THAT SORROUND US. FOR THIS, MY IDEA IS TO DESIGN SPACES TO CONNECT WITH THE OCEAN, AND IT’S SPECIES, SUCH A SPACES WHERE YOU CAN WATCH THEM AND RELAX, WHERE YOU ARE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THEIR EVOLUTION AND SYSTEM. A RESTAURANT / COFFESHOP WHERE ALL THE PRODUCTS ARE LOCAL AND COME FROM THE SEA AS A SUSTANIBLE WAY. ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SCUBADIVING, SNORKLE, BEACH CLEAN UPS, TALKS AND EVENTS RELATED TO MARINE LIFE IMPORTANCE WILL BE GIVEN IN THIS RESORT. ISLE OF WIGHT- CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE SITE VICTORIAN HONEYMOONS / 2020 HONEYMOONS ISLE OF WIGHT Victorian Era Honeymoons:

Isle of Wight during the Victorian Era:

- As soon as the wedding ceremony was finished, couples were sent off to far away/ secluded areas in a carriage drawn by white horses.

- Black, brown, or the wedding dress was meant to be worn as the “travelling” outfit for the bride

- British seaside villages knowns for fishing ports and transit areas - During the industrial revolution with the increased communication systems, cities and towns held an unhealthy atmosphere with the constant chaos as well as poor air quality conditions - The wealthier people started to reach out to the calmer and more entertaining parts of the country o Ventnor o Ryde o Osborne (known for the love between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert)

Purpose/ focus of Victorian honeymoons

Osborne House, representing the romance of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert: - Built in a Italian ‘palazzo’ style - Designed to blend in with the setting of Isle of Wight o Temperate climate and panoramic views reminded Prince of Naples - Inspired by British precedents o Thomas Hope’s Deepdene (Surrey) o Charles Barry’s Trentham (Staffordshire) - Even though Osborne house is meant to tell the story of the private lives of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, it became known as a symbol of the power of the British monarchy and its empire, influencing architecture worldwide.

OSBORNE HOUSE - 1880 DEEPDENE, SURREY

- Focused on the concept of reorientation - Allowed the couples a chance to adapt and change to create a lifestyle of their own, in the future, to build their own routines and families o The couples were to understand the views and perspectives of each other.

- In 1972 the site reopened as Ventnor Botanic Garden, acquired by the South Wight Borough Council and subsequently by the Isle of Wight County Council.

- The site remains in public ownership.

1940s

- It was a Victorian Hospital - Was a pioneer in the treatment of Tuberculosis (TB) in the UK introducing both the ‘sanatorium’ regime and innovative architectural and hospital environmental design. They thought that the sea air would help cure people with TB. - Was one of the biggest hospitals in the south.

- The main building was demolished in 1969.

1970s CHANGES ON LAND THROUGH THE YEARS

ISLE OF WIGHT- CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE SITE VENTOR’S BOTANIC GARDEN The Ventor Botanical Garden was founded in 1907 with approximately 1000 worldwide temperate and subtropical plants that are showed. The plants are organized by which region they originate from.

The microclimate of Ventor Undercliff is an avarage of 5 degrees warmer than the mainland.

ISLE OF WIGHT- CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE SITE MUSIC CULTURE AND FESTIVAL - Hippy Festival / Current Festival The award-winning Isle of Wight Festival is steeped in history and famed for mixing iconic legendary artists with the hottest up and coming acts.

Isle of Wight Festival’s colourful carnival of indie, rock, pop and electronic music is back for a 16th round since its celebrated modern reboot. (in 2020)

Festival 1969:

Festival 1968:

- Bob Dylan attracted the world’s media and 80,000 to 100,000 festival goers - Location: Wootton - Notable line-up: Bob Dylan, The Band, The Nice.

- The first Isle of Wight festival - Attracted about 8,000 festival goers to Hell Field near Godshill.

- Location: Food Farm - Notable line-up: Jefferson Airplane, Arthur Brown, The Move.

Festival 1970: - Mark Woodnutt would need proof that the festival was a threat to public and environmental health.

- Foulks’ company Fiery Creations reminded the council of the lack of trouble during the 1969 festival and the good publicity the island received because of the event.

- Disruptions: attempted to break down the perimeter wall the day before the festival began, declared free prompting a queue of concerned workers and creditors seeking immediate payment backstage, 117 arrests possession of drugs - Attracted around 600,000 festival goers.

- Location: East Afton - Notable line-up: the Who, Miles Davis, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, the Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Sly and the Family Stone and Gilberto Gil; Jimi Hendrix.

Festival 2002-2020: - Attracted around 8,000 - 72,000 festival goers - Location: Seaclose Park - Notable line-up: David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Coldplay.

Main aim of festival: The aim of this event is to bring people together to talk about what makes them feel happy, to try out different activities for free and, maybe ... to discover a new sense of well being

ISLE OF WIGHT- CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE SITE REGATTA CULTURE + FERRY ECONOMY

FERRIES AND CONNECTION TO MAINLAND • There are two main operators for the route Red funnel and White link.

• There are a few direct ferry lines connecting the island to the Mainland : • Red Funnel: Southampton- Cowes/East Cowes 25 minutes • Whitelink: Portsmouth-Fishbourne 45minutes Portsmouth- Ryde 22 minutes Lymington- Yarmouth 40 minutes • The services operate daily and provide access to the major cities on the island. This allows to aid in infrastructure especially during festival, Regatta week or during the summer

SAILING • The island has about 12 sailing/ yacht clubs • Due to the prevailing winds most of them are located on the northern part of the island on the solent.

• The historical aspect of yachting/sailing having a strong connection with the aristocracy can be easily spotted as most as 7/12 of the clubs have Royal affiliation with most members of the Royal family being members

THE SOLENT

COWES WEEK

• The Solent is known for being a popular sailing spot in the UK. The so called passage is shielded form direct gusts of wind and by the Southern side of UK mainland and the Northern side of the Isle of Wight. Due to its tides it can be sailed through during any time of year.

• The first race was held in 1826 and has been a part of the island life ever since. A s a result of its popularity the amount of participants has grown immensely over the centuries. Now, 1000+ boats participate in Cowes week with 40 races daily over the course of the week.

• The Regatta also bring 100, 000 visitors to Cowes and 8,000+ crew members.

• The tides can change extremely quickly and all participant in sailing are advised to keep an eye out, because of these radical changes the Solent has a few tricky areas where people are advised to be careful.

• Most amateur sailing participants will stay on their boat during the racing, however the professional crews (top of the end) will stay ashore in a rented ‘crew’ house , this is due to their inability to store anything on their boat (extra weight= slower boat.) The rental are usually located in close proximity to Cowes center and harbor.

• The race usually takes place in the first half of August.

ISLE OF WIGHT- CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE SITE MILITAR BATTERY Terms: Battery – A group of guns, usually no permanent troops are stationed there.

Fort – A fort commands a group of 2 or more batteries and usually has a permanent garrison of troops.

Time-line: 1862 – The Needles Old Battery was built (but after 30 years it became outdated)

1895 – The Needles New Battery was completed.

1885 – A tunnel was dug towards the cliff face (which eventually led to an observation post + search light in 1899)

1945 – Both batteries deactivated by Ministry of Defence after WW2 Both sites now listed as Grade II

1887- The elevator down to the beach was completed.

1955 to 1971 – Top secret space rocket/missile centre built.

ISLE OF WIGHT- CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE SITE MILITAR BATTERY The Batteries: Highdown Rocket site and Development centre: Old Battery is a Victorian coastal fortification built to protect the naval dockyards at Portsmouth from attack

by French warships.

Remote location and seaward facing slopes made it ideal for testing. The Highdown Space Rocket Development centre was built on the site of the Needles Old Battery, developed 2 space rockets ‘Black Night’ and ‘Black Arrow’. The rocket testing site is located close to the new battery site. In 1971 the only all British satellite was launched into orbit because of the work.

The battery was part of a chain of defence surrounding the city (Portsmouth), with other forts on the isle of wight and the mainland. It used a new type of gun which could pierce the armour of iron clad ships. It was permanently manned during WW1 and WW2; the area was used to trial new technology like searchlights and train local volunteers.

The old battery is now a museum which offers exhibits of the underground rooms, models of the rockets and access to the searchlight position giving a clear view over the needles. The new battery and Highdown rocket site are also accessible. It gives visitors insight to how a Victorian Battery would work, a glimpse into the life of a soldier during the WW2 and technology development.

The chalk cliffs had been damaged by the vibrations caused from firing the gun making the chalk to crumble into the sea below. The grounds were also too small for the newer guns; therefore, The Needles New Battery was built on higher ground (122 meters above sea level) for the new larger guns.

Old Battery became a lookout post. Position Finding Cells and Fire command post were built as the ‘eyes’ for the New Battery, alerting to any hostile ships.

After WW2, it had been put into maintenance and finally closed in 1954, the area also become repopulated with rabbits. (The National trust brought the site and opened it to the public in 1982)

ISLE OF WIGHT- CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE SITE RADIO SIGNALS - Marconi

- Marconi made the first radio which worked over some distance - Before Marconi was hertz - Marconi was sponsored by Queen Victoria - 1st trial was run from a hotel down at the needles. The hotel does not exist anymore but a plaque remains there to commemorate tis. 1897 Royal Needles Hotel - TV/satellite/radio/fiber optics all derived from Marconi’s work COURT ROYAL / MADEIRA HOTEL BOURNEMOUTH

ISLE OF WIGHT- SPECIFIC SITE ANALYSIS SOIL MATERIALS / COMPOSITION Chalk being an alkaline substance there is some group of plants that will grow as atop layer in the soil due to them specializing in growing in that type of soil. The soil layer ranges from 1m down to just a few centimeters in depth.

The shape came from many years of erosion coupled with millions of years of sedimentary chalk being built up, the composition came through the movement of tectonic plates which forced the layers of chalk to become more vertical to the extent that alum bay near the needles sees nearly vertical stacks of chalk.

The geology of the Isle of Wight is dominated by sedimentary rocks of the Cretaceous and Paleogene age. This sequence was affected by the late stages of the Alpine Orogeny, forming the Isle of Wight monocline, the cause of the steeply-dipping outcrops of the Chalk Group and overlying Paleogene strata seen at The Needles, Alum Bay, and Whitecliff Bay.

The chalk on the needles is much more indurated than elsewhere, it is so hard that Rowe (1908) found it almost impossible to remove a fossil from the stack, this is unlike the chalk on alum bay where the chalk is softer.

This chalk outcrop runs through the center of the Island from Culver Cliff in the east to the Needles in the west and then continues under the sea to the Isle of Purbeck.

‘The Isle of Wight is officially one of the sunniest places in the UK. The island as a whole enjoys an average of over 37 hours of sunshine a week compared to the national average of 29.7 hours.

2012 Shanklin was asserted to have received 2,018.7 hours of sunshine.

The Isle of Wight is known for having its own weather, in comparrison to the rest of England.

The town of Ventnor is famous for even having its own microclimate;this is due to its sheltered position beneath the cliffs. This can be seen in other areas of the Isle of wight such as the South (in the area known as the “Undercliff ”) surrounding Ventnor has its very own microclimate.

On average, it’s the South Island that sees the most of the good weather, with Shanklin, Sandown and Ventnor all averaging up to 5 hours of sun a day, This microclimate is produced by being south facing and protected in the lee of the high downland that surround the town. peaking at 8 hours during the summer months.

Needles pfound on teh far East side of the island, thus does not recieve the extent of the microclimate privilages.

ISLE OF WIGHT- SITE ANALYSIS - SUSTAINABILITY APPROACH TO THE SITE THE SPECIFIC AGENDA TO THE SITE

ENERGY The Isle of WIght Council has a vision for the Island to be “self-sufficient in renewable energy by 2020”. In order to acheive this goal, the Island would need to produce 575 GWh of electricity. The council employed a third-party specialist to undertake a thorough investigation in order to establish the capacity of the Islands existing electrical infrastructre. It concluded that the implementation of sustainable energy on the existing electrical system may cause overloading as the current sub-sea and overhead lines do not have the capacity to carry the electricity that would be produced by the proposed schemes. If replaced, an offshore wind farm could provide up to 100MWe, while a tidal energy scheme could provide 11kV.

TRAVEL In order to meet its annual target of 6% reductions in carbon emissions the council promotes the use of car shares, public tranport, walking and cycling. A survey conducted by the council shows that 77% of journeys made by Island residents are between 2-5 miles. This may be too far to walk for most, however cycling would provide benefits to both the Island residents and the envronment.

As such the council plan to improve the cycling network sothat it can be accessed by all. The council also encourages residesnts to purchase electric cars by offering a free 12-month parking permit to owners of new, zero emissions EVs.

TOURISM Reducing the dependency on motor vehicles to visit the island is high on the councils agenda. According to the ‘CYCLEWight’ strategy, “cycle tourists spend 9% more per trip than typical tourists”. It is therefore in the councils interest to increase the level of cycling across the island, which will subsequently improve the local economy. To acheive this, the council are proposing improvements to existing road and cycle networks, enabling greater accessibility and therefore increased use. These improvements include a greater level of signage, improved road surfaces and the implementation of cycle storage at popular tourist destinations.

BUILDING The Isle of Wight Council has implemented ‘The Island Plan’, which sets out the requirements that must be met for new developments. This will ensure that the council have greater control over the island’s growth, and as such they will have the ability to support and manage new growth in a sustainable manner. These requirements ensure that new developments happen in the right place, fit in with the character of the Island and are developed alongside the right roads, schools, services, retail, leisure and community facilities.

SUSTAINABILITY In 2008, the Isle of Wight Council introduced ‘Eco Island’, a sustainable community strategy for the Island to 2020. Its goal was to acheive “the smallest carbon footprint in England by 2020”. At the time, the Islands ecological footprint was three times more than the amount it could sustain.

THE FIVE CHALLENGES REMAIN - NOT ENOUGH PROTECTED AREAS AT SEA - there are not enough protected wild places at sea. The UK’s network of Marine Protected Areas needs to protect the whole range of wildlife in our seas.

- FISHING– after the significant reform of the Common Fisheries Policy we have begun to see some of our fish stocks recover. But there are still significant discard issues. We need to make sure that this process is continued which will benefit jobs, consumers and wildlife - LACK OF PLANNING OF COMPETING INTERESTS – fishing, oil rigs, wind farms and gravel extraction from the seabed all take a huge toll on UK seas, fragile seabed habitats and the wildlife that lives in them; we need to plan our seas so that we have space for wildlife to recover and to provide certainty to industry as to where they can develop and fish.

- SEVERE POLLUTION – sewage, farming chemicals, plastic litter washed out to sea, abandoned fishing nets and noise pollution from new developments at sea are killing wildlife and adversely affecting human health - HUMAN BEHAVIOUR – our success in tackling these threats ultimately rests on people’s understanding and accepting the need for change.

FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BOTTOM PART OF THE BUILDING THE IDEA IS TO APPLY AND USE RECYCLED PLASTIC FOUND IN THE OCEANS AS INSULATION, KNOWING THAT THE ADVANTAGES ARE CLEANING THE OCEANS AND SAVE ANIMALS FROM DYING BECAUSE OF THE PLASTIC THAT HUMANS THROW AWAY. ALSO, USING PLASTIC AS INSULATION HELPS THERMAL AND ACCOUSTIC COMFORT.

ISLE OF WIGHT- TECHNOLOGY STUDY 1:50 TECHNICAL SECTION + EXPLICATIVE DETAILS DIFFERENT TYPES OF BRICKS ARE MADE FROM PLASTIC FOR WALL BRACKETS AND CEILING BEAMS. IN ADDITION, CEMENT, WATER AND POLYSTYRENE FOAM ARE ALSO USED.
