Thank you from the Editor Wait… don’t turn the page, this is not a boring editors letter…

Luxury Escape to exclusive Rae’s on Wategos, Byron Bay inclusive of dinner & spa treatments

Well I hope not anyway! What I should say is that it’s not a self-important monologue about me, or a summary of all the wonderful features in this magazine, you’ll discover those soon enough just by turning the pages. This is just a simple note to say… THANK YOU FOR PICKING UP OUR THIRTEENTH ANNUAL EDITION OF WA CUSTOM HOMES! I know for the superstitious minded 13 is an unlucky number, I’m not really sure where that whole 13 thing originated but I certainly don’t see it as unlucky – quite the opposite. I feel very fortunate that for 13 years both our amazing West Australian lifestyle and our economy have enabled us to print a magazine filled with beautiful homes like the ones between these pages. If you’ve bought this mag because you’re building your dream home, then YOU need to be doubly thanked, as all of us clever people know it’s only by continuing to spend that we stimulate the economy and grow. So enjoy our lucky 13th edition and I look forward to saying thanks again next year in our 15th WA Custom Homes. (Yes I hear 14 is not so lucky for some of our readers, so we’ll be skipping that one!)

COLOUR 2017 We all know colours go in and out of fashion – for everything from interior décor to clothing and graphic design, but who decides what’s hot and what’s not? You’d be excused for thinking it’s the fashion elite, or interior design gurus of the world – the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Kelly Hoppen – right? Well think again…the colour tendsetter of the western world is in fact PANTONE®.

If you’ve ever designed a logo, approved a brochure or had a business card printed, you’re probably familiar with the name PANTONE – a company which has built its reputation by developing colour matching formulas. Well it is in fact PANTONE ”Colour Forecasters” who research colour popularity and trends, based on that they predict what colours will be popular up to two years ahead. Designers and manufacturers of all kinds - fashion, interior, furniture and more tend to base their collections and new ranges on the PANTONE forecasts, which is why you see the same colours in all the stores. So what are the colours for 2017? Many of the hues for next year echo the colors of nature, both muted and earthy and vivid and bright and, from Hazelnut, a pale earthy tone, to the vibrant Primrose Yellow, Pink Yarrow and Flame. There are several blue tones from the dusty Niagara, and rich Lapis Blue to the appropriately named Island Paradise which looks like the water of Bora Bora.

PANTONE ® 19-4045 TC X Lapis Blue

PANTONE® 13-1404 TPX Pale Dogwood

By keeping your walls a neutral colour and investing in major pieces of furniture in classic styles and neutral tones you can regularly update your décor and keep your home looking current with rugs, cushions and throws in the latest trending colours.

PANTONE’S 2017 COLOUR OF THE YEAR – GREENERY Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, was very philosophical about the choice saying ‘Greenery’ symbolises “the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment” and “the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.” So here’s to a green year!

LAKE COMO

If your dream home is a rustic manor on the edge of Lake Como, then this new custom design by Maughan Building Co might be just what you’re looking for. You won’t have George Clooney for a neighbour but surrounded by the detailed stonework, grand archways, cedar window frames and other Tuscan style details it’ll certainly be easier to visualise him waving from his balcony next door whilst you manicure your hedges.

22

WA CUSTOM HOMES

The inspiration for this beautiful home came from a recent trip to Europe taken by Maughan Building Co, Builder & Director, Rob Maughan, in fact the design concept has been laid over an original photo taken by Maughan at Lake Como. Talking about the aspect of his travels that inspired him, Maughan recalls, “I had a gap in projects and thankfully my travel agent convinced me to take a tour from Rome through to Venice as it was a trip that supercharged my sensors! Rome is the most incredible place I’d ever been, the people, the food & of course the architecture are unbelievable. The trip took in Cinque Terre - “God’s Country” I call it, an eclectic bunch of buildings that somehow complement each other to form a beautiful place.

In the past I’ve predominantly designed very contemporary homes, with clean and simple lines, but after my trip I had the idea to design a Tuscan cottage... somehow it’s grown into more of a palace than a cottage, definitely something I like to think George Clooney might reside in.

Often previously wondering about the authenticity of other “Tuscan Style” homes being built in Perth, after seeing the ‘real thing’ first hand, Maughan was compelled on his return to design a home with true Tuscan characteristics and style.

Cinque Terre Italy

“With any style of building, design & material selection is paramount, and I would jump at an opportunity to build this home or something similar in an authentic style utilising local rock and stone and other quality natural materials. In fact my dream would be to replicate a whole Tuscan village!” says Maughan. “If I was being honest with myself, my trip really challenged my thought process as to what makes a beautiful home, nothing in these authentic homes is plumb, level or square but here I was appreciating this and seeing home design in an entirely different light. This really hit home for me after returning to Perth where I was soon setting up a laser level for a ground slab for accuracy within millimetres over a 500m2 area.” Laughing Maughan says… “I think that’s where you really see the true beauty in imperfection.

Your Own Private Resort It takes an amazing property to be featured on the cover of our luxury homes annual and this stunning new home by Mandurah Homes in the southern suburbs of Madora Bay is truly outstanding. Situated on a generously sized corner block, no expense has been spared in the design and construction of this beautiful home which with its expansive proportions and luxurious appointments could easily be mistaken for a boutique resort. Utilising the natural contours of the site, the home’s formal entrance stands grandly at the top of ten stairs, giving the home a dramatic approach whilst maximising the size of the block and providing garage space for four vehicles in the undercroft garage. Given the close proximity to the ocean, materials were chosen to ensure that the home had minimal maintenance requirements, including powder coated aluminium windows intercepted with carefully placed cedar claddings for aesthetic detail, compact laminate for the linings of the wide eaves and, ultra-steel Colorbond roofing. Marine grade stainless steel has also been used in external finishes.

Through the towering front door, the entry hall opens out to a vast, mostly open plan, living space. Here, clever use of columns and timber framing gives each of the different living areas definition, without enclosing them behind walls. And, the already huge 846sqm home feels even larger thanks to extensive glazing and frameless bi -fold doors that open out to the stunning outdoor area.

An abundance of luxurious materials including imported stone flooring, marble countertops and timber add a natural warmth to the home whilst contrasting with the high gloss cabinetry that has been used in the kitchen, cellar, concealed scullery and connected alfresco area. Luxuriously fitted, the alfresco has been finished in exquisite detail with a gas fireplace set into a marble clad wall and kitchen complete with pizza oven.

This family residence a top Bicton’s Blackwall Reach reflects its river’s edge environment and the ‘enhanced living’ aspirations of the owner. Hillam Architects, David Hillam faced the architectural challenges of cutting into a hillside and maximising views to achieve the success of this impressive family home. David Hillam answers a few questions for us about this impressive home: What were the clients’ expectations for their new home? The client wanted a zoned family living space over the three levels of the home with a kitchen hub, where all the family living spaces would come together. A generous guest suite was an important part of the brief. Both guest and master bedrooms have been deliberately set at split levels allowing greater privacy whilst providing spectacular views. Substantial outdoor living and entertainment spaces were also a key requirement for the project. What are the focal points of this home design? The extensive glazing of this home allows the beautiful rivers edge environment to appear directly on the clients doorstep, to be able to view the great outdoors from almost every room in this home makes it feel as though you are amongst the natural environment when in the comfort of your own home. The zoned living areas are also uniquely designed for a growing families lifestyle without inhibiting the spectacular surrounds of the home. Do you have a favourite feature in this home? The standout feature of this home for me is the bold visual connections between the inside and outside spaces. How did the windows and doors play a part in the client’s requirements? The extensive floor to ceiling glazing sections provides panoramic river views throughout the entire home. What is also a clear standout is that there is no clear boundary between the inside and outside elements with the installation of multiple full height glazed sliding doors on the entertaining decks and spaces. The high performance glazing reduces the solar gain on hot summer days whilst still providing abundant natural lighting throughout the entirety of the home. Why did you choose Jason Windows? The client personally requested Jason Windows because they provide a quality product suite which is great value for money. With a showcase of products and meeting rooms in their Showrooms located in Welshpool & Bunbury both architects and clients can utilise the Jason Windows offices as their very own design studio. Positioned in Cottesloe, the vision for the home was to create a modern interpretation of the beach shack, utilising a neutral palette of natural materials that would enhance the beauty of its ocean-side location. Working with a narrow block of only 10m and a site with a four meter drop from front to back, exceptional design initiatives have delivered a home that despite the limitations of the site is not only functional but architecturally stunning.

Two buildings separate the sleeping and living zones and are connected by a gallery walkway and central courtyard that allow the home to take in an abundance of natural light and views of the surrounding pine trees. The front of the home houses the bedrooms, and privacy and energy efficiency has been added via 140 custom made metal screens that wrap the building, skilfully joined so that each panel blends seamlessly with the next giving it a striking sculptural appearance. Naturally the screens shade the windows, and framed off the double brick walls by100mm, heat absorbed by the screens is deflected rather than transferring to the building, rising between the screen and the wall like a solar chimney.

Aesthetically the screens conceal practical elements such as downpipes, wall vents, hot water units and windows positioned for practicality rather than appearance. The pattern itself was designed as a symbolic reference to the aerial view of the Norfolk Pines as they align down the avenues of Cottesloe, and internally the pattern adds a beautiful filtered light into the home that dances off the internal walls and surfaces.

Second Storey Illusion Working with a restricted site of 368m2, a building width of only 7.5m, and in the heritage suburb of Subiaco where two storey homes are not preferred, meeting the clients brief for a family home with a feeling of generous space and retention of a backyard was challenging to say the least. From the street, the house appears to be a single storey home, with feature handmade recycled brickwork that wraps from the front elevation into the entry of the home complementing the heritage aesthetic of the area. A second storey however is cleverly concealed within the timber framework , with the roof sheeting also used as cladding on the walls of the upper level so that it seems to almost disappear into the roofline.

Requests that may appear simple enough‌ but when working with a small site with a 4m diagonal forward slope, and consideration for future sub-division of the site, the job becomes a little more challenging!

Overcoming obstacles to meet a client’s brief and deliver a beautiful home is the testament of both skill and experience and in this case the outcome is a true credit to builders, Artique Homes who ticked all the boxes on the client’s wish list and then some. Blending traditional Australian Colonial style features such as bull-nosed verandahs, frieze work and timber battened gables with a light ‘Hampton’s style’ palette of natural materials that includes cream feature stone and white painted balustrading the home has a lovely classical elegance. Working with natural slope and shape of the site the home has been built over three levels with a three car garage, gym and cellar at the lower level, the main open plan living areas and master suite on the mid-level, and guest rooms and additional living areas on the top floor. Incredibly this beautiful home also includes a music room, theatre room and activity room and has achieved a 7.5 star energy rating.

TRADITIONAL TOUCH Over the years Glass Artist Kim Fitzpatrick and his team at Tradition Stained Glass in Perth have built an uncompromised reputation as experts in their field, having worked on many public buildings and churches undertaking delicate restoration work on existing windows and also creating new and beautiful glass art, such as a recent installation at Parliament House in Perth. However, an area of great pleasure for Kim is working with home-owners to create something uniquely beautiful for their home, and this project in Coogee saw TSG completing a varied range of glass artworks that combined together to add elegance and character to this stunning new home.

With an elevated site they’d had for many years overlooking beautiful Cockburn Sound, owners Frances and Kevin Bucat finally set out to build their dream home and of course like all dream homes it had to incorporate all the finishes and details they’d always imagined, which for Frances was an abundance of lead light windows. Working with the Bucats TSG custom designed and created a number of traditional style lead-light panels for both doors and walls throughout the home, including three incredible 3 meter high panels that are a spectacular feature of both the front façade of the home and the formal lounge room.

124

These spectacular 3 meter lead-light panels have been triple glazed for coastal living conditions and are stunning feature from all angles of this new Coogee home.

At the rear of the home, TSG have created unique contemporary fused glass artworks to embellish the area around the pool. The technique used in creation renders the panels nearly unbreakable and the largest panel mounted above the pool has been installed on a lightbox for stunning effect, adding a beautiful ambient light to the courtyard.

Most cherished by Frances is a beautiful hand painted window installed on a curved internal wall to her sewing room. Designed and painted by Kim himself in vibrant colours with stunning detail, the window represents a scene from France’s childhood growing up in rural and is sure to be a treasured piece of family history for future generations.

Externally, materials were chosen that would stand up to the rigours of ccean-side living. Stainless steel Colorbond roof sheeting and cladding was chosen, along with commercial window frames. Internally polished concrete floors throughout mimics the sand of the beach opposite and stone cladding featured on both the external faรงade and internal walls of the home add natural warmth.

Working with Chindarsi Architects, Cassari Group have a constructed an award winning beauty. Only from the rear garden can you truly appreciate the unique architecture of the addition which incorporates a new living, dining, kitchen and alfresco area and an upper floor master suite and balcony. The sloping angles of the roof and contemporary lines are in stark contrast to the heritage style of the original home but clever use of materials such as polished Jarrah floors and stained glass blend old with new beautifully.

Cantilevering out from the rest of this addition the kitchen has been perfectly positioned between the main living area and alfresco, allowing the owners to taking full advantage of WA’s outdoor lifestyle.

A simple and monochromatic colour scheme is warmed up with dark oak floorboards, gold accessories, textured and patterned fabrics and an Escea DX1500 gas fireplace. 5. Designed by Paul Meschiati & Associates, this Dalkeith home contrasts the cool sophistication of marble with the warmth of wood and a double-sided DX1500 by Escea.

A commissioned portrait is a very personal undertaking whether it is a portrait of yourself, a family member or perhaps a loved pet. Explicit trust is given to the artist to capture the true essence of the subject and it is a skill that is more than just a learned technique, it requires an innate talent, one which Perth artist Jana Vodesil – Baruffi possesses in droves. Whether from a sitting or a photograph, Jana has an ability to interpret facial expressions that go beyond the visible and reveal the character of the subject, encapsulating it on a canvas for future generations to treasure - not just as a family heirloom but as a magnificent work of art.

In 2013 as part of “Permanent Impressions,” a benefit for the Leukemia Foundation, Jana created a fifty portrait collection celebrating women of WA. The resulting book, was awarded a bronze medal in the Best Regional Non-Fiction category of the 2014 Independent Publisher Book Awards in New York. Another area of Jana’s work are her Visual Diaries which focus on beautiful images from her extensive travels around the globe. These works capture the essence of destinations such as the northern Italian countryside, streetscapes in the Bahamas and the majesty of the Alps and form another realm. Her lifelong interest in art has led to an award-winning career and numerous exhibitions. Vodesil-Baruffi was one of just 30 WA artists selected to exhibit at Matilda Bay Art Award, and she won first prize at the City of Melville Art Exhibition and the Bicentennial Exhibition in York. In 2014, she launched the contemporary Australian Surrealists movement with exhibitions at the Metamorphosis Art Gallery.

ANOTHER AREA OF JANA’S WORK ARE HER VISUAL DIARIES WHICH FOCUS ON BEAUTIFUL IMAGES FROM HER EXTENSIVE TRAVELS AROUND THE GLOBE.

Jana Vodesil-Baruffi continues to combine her art with involvement in the global issues with a new collection of Fantastic Realism paintings based on the oppression of women in the developing world. Builder of Choice Having a new home architecturally designed is a thrilling experience for any home owner, but without a great builder, even the greatest architectural drawings are just pieces of paper. Bringing your vision to life in all its glory requires not just expertise, but a passion and commitment to deliver your dream home just the way you dreamed it. For the owners of this new home in Claremont the builder of their choice was Maughan Building Company.

150

WA CUSTOM HOMES

Having previously built their expansive, traditionally styled home in Dalkeith, the clients were very familiar with the process. This time however they wanted something quite different. With grownup children and young grandchildren, a compact low-maintenance contemporary home was the brief. Something that was minimalist in design but with unique architectural features, finished with quality materials but with an open and airy feeling, that would still provide sufficient room to comfortably entertain the whole family.

With finalised architectural drawings, the owners contracted Maughan Building Co to see their vision for their new home come to life. After working for many years with other leading luxury home builders in Perth, owner and builder Rob Maughan started Maughan Building Co in 2008. And it’s his personalised service and commitment to exceptional standards that has seen Maughan Building Co recognised with several industry awards.

Finished to exacting standards, this stunning contemporary home was built down from the sloping streetscape to allow the home to be constructed from front to rear on one level plain. The luxurious finishes include Isernia stone tiles throughout the main living areas which flow through to the external verandahs. Accessed via wide, zero threshold doorways the home opens up to create an expansive indoor / outdoor entertaining space.

Significant thought in the design stages and considerable skill in execution has achieved the minimalist, slightly industrial feel of this home. Polished plaster on the walls and custom-made doors without frames disappear into wall cavities. Strip LED lighting has been flush mounted to highlight the crisp angular lines of the master bedroom en-suite which leads to a fabulous outdoor shower for hot summer days and warm moonlit nights.

Recovered from a property owned by the clients in Bridgetown, the timber in this workbench was once a part of an old shearing shed and believed to be over 100 years old. Adding not only some rustic charm to the otherwise ultra modern home, but a piece of WA history, Maughan straightened the buckled boards and crafted a workbench for the client which is now a treasured part of their new home.

Thrilled with their new home, the clients attribute Rob’s preparedness, attention to detail and determination to “get it right” to the outcome of their home which is a building of exceptional standards. “We are delighted with our new home and the entire building process has been well organised by MBC from start to finish. The costing was in line with contract budget reflecting MBC’s accurate estimate process and Rob’s expertise in all aspects of the building process ensured a positive experience. It is without reservation that we recommend MBC as a builder of fine homes.”

Stunning... POOLS BY DESIGN An outstanding feature of the beautiful home in Madora Bay that graces the cover of this edition is this spectacular infinity edge pool and spa by Perth’s multi-award winning custom pool builder, Pools by Design. With the home’s extensive glazing and emphasis on seamless indoor / outdoor living, the pool was highly visible from most of the home and a central part of the outdoor entertaining area therefore it had to look exceptional - and exceptional may just be an understatement…

164

WA CUSTOM HOMES

Working closely with Iliadis Architects & Mondo Landscapes the pool has been constructed above ground in a unique design which separates it from the house by a ‘moat’, alleviating the requirement for extensive fencing and allowing the exceptional beauty of the pool to be fully appreciated without obstruction. The moat contains feature lighting which highlights the shimmering glass mosaic tiles that cover the entire outer wall of the pool along with the water as it cascades over the infinity edge. Carefully placed river stones conceal the drain at the bottom of the moat which feeds water back into the pool. At the entry to the pool area is a raised decked cabana where the owners can lounge and enjoy the illusion created by the pool’s fully tiled interior that the water is dancing across the pool, along with the custom made water feature installed on the planter wall that creates another stunning visual of films of water flowing into the water below.

With its stunning 12m infinity edge, glass mosaic tiling, custom made stainless steel bar stools and mid pool piers with LED lit water features it’s no surprise this beautiful pool has become the highlight of client’s extensive outdoor entertainment areas (that also include a tennis court and basketball court). The pool also has a clever pool blanket system to minimise evaporation when the pool is not in use, however is completely invisible when retracted!

Offering the ultimate in luxury with a six person spill over spa that has been fully tiled in mosaic tiles embellished with gold leaf, it’s no wonder that the owners of this beautiful pool wanted it to be visible from every living space. The Port Coogee pool was expertly engineered so the pool walls could form part of the boundary of the property and so there was seamless integration between the pool and the home, which has also been enhanced by a glass window from the pool to the lower level cellar.

Charming Cottage to Spacious Family Home Situated on an established residential street in East Fremantle, this historic cottage started life the same as many other homes on the street. It had been designed to suit the needs of family life decades ago, but now, the quaint cottage was lacking space and functionality for its growing family of five. The award winning team at Kensington Design transformed this charming historic cottage into a spacious and bright family home while respecting and reinforcing the existing character of the property, and having only minimal impact on the mature gardens.

174

WA CUSTOM HOMES

Kensington Design’s solution was to keep the original four room cottage and add a new two-storey addition to the rear, connected to the original cottage via a two-storey void that contains the new, yet traditional, staircase and floods light into this central space.

Throughout the home quaint details reflect the original era of the home, including timber detailing and period tapware and furniture hardware in the kitchen. A neutral palette of polished jarrah floorboards and crisp white cabinetry has allowed bright splashes of colour to be introduced in the interior styling. Despite the open plan design of the living, dining and kitchen area, the sunken lounge area has been made to feel cozy through separation with a low wall, a recycled brick fireplace and traditional styled built in bookshelves that nod to the original home’s past.

176

WA CUSTOM HOMES

In the upper floor of the addition is a luxurious and private master bedroom suite with views into the surrounding tree canopy and a Juliet balcony from which to enjoy them. The original aesthetic of the historic cottage was expertly retained. In fact, from street level it is almost impossible to see the two-storey addition to the rear. Only when guests enter through the front door does the home offer clues as to what surprises lie ahead.

Traditional Charm with Modern Style The stylish design and functionality of this Kensington Design home proves that good things come in small packages. Winner of this year’s HIA WA Award for Small Lot Home of the Year, this quaint home is nestled on a residential street in the Perth suburb of Doubleview where it utilises every square centimetre of its small 277 sqm lot thanks to a zero set back requirement on the southern boundary. Careful planning has allowed for a functional family home that boasts a double garage and remarkably a generously sized outdoor living space too.

178

WA CUSTOM HOMES

The home has been given a sense of grandeur with its formal entrance through the covered porch, perfect for welcoming guests, while the owners enjoy direct entry from the garage when coming and going. A highlight of the home is the L-shaped open plan living area that allows for a kitchen, dining and living space, set on three sides of the courtyardlike alfresco. Plenty of windows, and the northern aspect, bring in ample daylight, and while the home is furnished with modest fixtures and flooring choices, the exposed brick wall at one end

of the living area adds a touch of the unexpected. The master bedroom suite is located on the upper floor, providing an extra sense of privacy for the owners. This floor is also home to a separate lounge that adds a layer of flexibility to the home as it can be used as a playroom when necessary or as a relaxing lounge space for the adults when the kids are downstairs. Practical as well as functional, this home was built with EPS panels for the upper floor to guarantee excellent thermal performance while helping to keep costs down and construction speeds up.

A Seamless Addition Another award winner for Kensington Design, this home recently picked up the HIA WA Award for Best Renovation / Addition Project in the $450 to $650k range and it’s easy to see why. The home has been transformed into a spacious and bright arena for family living, combining form and function with modern design elements.

180

WA CUSTOM HOMES

One of the highlights of this addition project was the skilful use of the site’s natural topography. Working with the gentle downward slope of the site, Kensington Design created a split-level rear addition that nestles into the lot, thereby reducing the height impact of the upper floor on neighbouring properties. This height impact was further reduced thanks to the attic style children’s bedrooms on the upper floor of the addition. Here the sloped walls allowed for the overall roof height to be lower while providing the children with character bedrooms featuring dormer windows and boarded ceilings.

Downstairs, the new open plan living area is the perfect family space with generously sized kitchen that includes informal seating alongside the breakfast bar while the good sized dining table creates a more formal space and flows seamlessly into the living area. Here, the polished concrete floor (found throughout the addition) contrasts with the exposed recycled brick that serves to not only add warmth but also a modern context to the overall style.

Award Worthy Addition No design and construction project is without its challenges, but when your brief is to take a heritage listed building and modify it to meet the needs of today’s modern family, challenges are an inevitable reality. Perhaps that is why this Tallwood Constructions project in North Fremantle is so special. Despite the considerable challenges the resulting home is impressive in every way. A delight to its owners and to the industry, who awarded it the 2016 HIA Award for WA Renovation / Addition Project of the Year.

As Managing Director of Tallwood Constructions, Alex Campbell said “The best projects are those where there is a truly collaborative and team work approach by all involved, clients, architects, builder, suppliers and trades. Kris Keen from GKD was involved with all of the decisions at every step of the way and Matt, the owner’s dedication and passion for the build was an inspiration to all involved.”

In the clients’ eyes, everything about the project was successful, from start to finish, “From the first minute of meeting Alex and his Tallwood team our gut told us that these were the builders to use and our gut was proved right, time and time again,” said Matt and Nancy Clarke, who felt it was largely Tallwood’s passion and enthusiasm that resulted in such a beautiful yet practical home. The Clarkes were full of praise, going on to say that Tallwood had, “an instinctive feel for building beautiful things, a work ethic rarely seen, excellence and an ability to handle all those involved with tact and consideration without ever sacrificing the vision. The result has been a journey that, thanks to all those involved and particularly Tallwood, we have loved. More importantly, the result has been our incredible home which, as a living and breathing thing, reflects not only those within it but those that built it for us.”

This revered home is now a seamless combination of old meets new. Modern touches include the polished concrete floor while the recycled red brick driveway and gorgeous tessellated tiles give a nod to the past. An open and modern kitchen brings the home up to today’s style of living and the entire ground floor is bright and open thanks to the large curved sliding door out to the Alfresco. And while modern features such as home automation and intercom systems have been added, the shell of this home remains a Heritage Listed Building fitting of its location in historical North Fremantle.

Renovated with Charm From the front, this older home in Cottesloe retains its traditional charm, barely giving away the fact that a spacious and ultra-modern addition has transformed the rear of the home. This now modern beauty was created by Tallwood Constructions and was named a finalist in the HIA Awards for Perth Renovation / Addition Project of the Year.

While the original home was given a face-lift with new fixtures and fittings, tiling and paint, it is the new addition to the rear that steals the limelight. The open plan living area incorporates the new modern kitchen, dining and lounge and features an in-ground spiral wine cellar with glass trapdoor access and a suspended fireplace that serves as both a design feature and as a source of heat the room. Floor to ceiling frameless Skyframe panels and doors open out to the large Alfresco and provide a view to another of the home’s highlights, the swimming pool. Its large feature glass side panel adds an extra touch of fun to this stylish family home.

Steep Site Stunner Despite facing one of the steepest and most difficult sites they had ever built on, Tallwood Constructions in collaboration with Dane Design Australia created a stunning home that sits comfortably in its elevated position, overlooking the ocean in Eagle Bay.

Rather than working against the steep site the home was expertly constructed utilising the natural contours of the land to create a games room and master bedroom suite within the undercroft, boasting the same ocean views as the main floor of the home. On the main floor, the open plan design of the kitchen and living gives this home a bright and airy atmosphere that’s further added to by the cathedral ceiling, while extensive use of glass brings the indoor and outdoor living areas together. Outside there’s a large tiled terrace leading to the concrete swimming pool that also features an unobstructed view of the ocean.

The exterior of the home is dramatic with its use of stone and dark stained timber cladding. The same coloured stone continues into the landscaping cascading down the front-facing slope of the site. With its many dramatic design features, it’s easy to see why this home was recently awarded the HIA WA Award for Timber Framed Project of the Year. It received four other HIA SW awards including Innovation in Housing Project of the year and designer Dane Richardson from Dane Design Australia was awarded the HIA SW Award for Residential Building Designer of the Year for this project.

German manufacturer TECE consistently ask…

Can we do it better, faster, more attractively?

TECElux is the toilet terminal for all toilet functions of today—and tomorrow.

Features of the TECElux include: ■

Press and flush was yesterday. The toilet of today can do so much more: Rinse and blow dry, purify the air, and flush automatically. But often, the aesthetics are sacrificed for other benefits. TECE has now created a form that unites all functions. TECElux places the system components behind the wall, where they are invisible. An extremely flat glass facing closes the inspection opening and conceals the cistern. The connections for water and power are concealed behind the glass facing as well as optional odour trap and height adjustments.

LED “sen-Touch” flushing system-the buttons illuminate as you approach the terminal & flush operates electronically An invisible ”ceramic-Air” air freshening/odour extracting device located behind the glass panel The “m-Lift” function allowing you to adjust the height of the ceramic pan, even after installation Easy access panel to allow upgrades and maintenance on all these features inside the wall

With its simple aesthetics, TECElux blends in beautifully with the architecture of any bathroom.

TECElux Mini flush plate TECElux Mini is an electronic, real glass flush plate for the TECE cistern. Flush actuation is touch-free or by means of a light tap on the button area. The approach sensor recognises when a person approaches and activates the illumination of the button area, additionally serving as an orientation help in the dark. Using a programmable remote control it is possible to individually set the recognition range, actuation time and the illumination level of the display. It is also possible to set additional functions such as a hygiene flush or automatic flush with the remote control. TECElux Mini has a sleek minimalist design in black or white scratch resistant glass and can be flush mounted.

JUNGLE HOUSE Brazil Aptly named ‘Jungle House’, this home in Brazil designed by architects at Studio MK27 is situated amongst dense Rain Forrest like vegetation in a mountainous area of the Paulista Shore. Built into the topography of the site the home has been designed to optimise the connection between architecture and nature, projecting out from it’s mountainside location to blend with the tree tops and take in the views in the distance.

Emphasising the connection with nature, a considerable amount of timber has been used in the construction of the home including timber screens that cover windows and bedroom balconies. The large open plan living area of the home is on the upper level and open on both sides to enjoy cross ventilation. On one side Jacuzzis and a fire pit enjoy a connection with the mountain whilst on the opposite side an expansive deck with infinity edge pool has been built into the concrete slab with views looking out through the surrounding tropical vegetation to the ocean in the distance.
