In my preamble for our Melbourne edition this year I mentioned how each city seems to have its own unique style and personality, which even flows through to the homes being built. To be honest, I did also say in the Melbourne edition that I have no bias, but having grown up in Sydney I can’t say that with confidence. I adore Sydney… why wouldn’t I? It’s the most beautiful city in the world – right? And surrounded by our stunning harbour and beaches, it’s only expected that the homes would also be quite outstanding. In saying all that I have spent years looking at luxurious, multi-award winning homes from all over the world and if you were to base ‘Sydney’s style’ only on the homes that we are featuring in this edition of Sydney Custom Homes I don’t think there are any words to describe it other than SPECTACULAR… show-stopping, draw-dropping, unbelievably SPECTACULAR. I think that’s a fitting description of everything about my home-town. Let’s see what you think…

ALCHEMY COLLECTION A LUXURY ITALIAN EXPERIENCE

COLOUR 2017 We all know colours go in and out of fashion – for everything from interior décor to clothing and graphic design, but who decides what’s hot and what’s not? You’d be excused for thinking it’s the fashion elite, or interior design gurus of the world – the likes of Karl Lagerfeld and Kelly Hoppen – right? Well think again…the colour tendsetter of the western world is in fact PANTONE®.

16

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

If you’ve ever designed a logo, approved a brochure or had a business card printed, you’re probably familiar with the name PANTONE – a company which has built its reputation by developing colour matching formulas. Well it is in fact PANTONE ”Colour Forecasters” who research colour popularity and trends, based on that they predict what colours will be popular up to two years ahead. Designers and manufacturers of all kinds - fashion, interior, furniture and more tend to base their collections and new ranges on the PANTONE forecasts, which is why you see the same colours in all the stores. So what are the colours for 2017? Many of the hues for next year echo the colors of nature, both muted and earthy and vivid and bright and, from Hazelnut, a pale earthy tone, to the vibrant Primrose Yellow, Pink Yarrow and Flame. There are several blue tones from the dusty Niagara, and rich Lapis Blue to the appropriately named Island Paradise which looks like the water of Bora Bora.

PANTONE’S 2017 COLOUR OF THE YEAR – GREENERY Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, was very philosophical about the choice saying ‘Greenery’ symbolises “the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political environment” and “the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.” So here’s to a green year!

Adaptable Luxury Built on five acres, this resort-style home in Dural by Gremmo Homes exemplifies the Australian lifestyle incorporating extensive external living areas into a stunning contemporary design. From the street the home has a striking presence with an inspired mix of organic materials including feature free formed stone walling and hardwood timber cladding that contrast against the smooth white of the rendered walls and soften the geometrical angles.

The immediate feeling within this beautiful home is a dramatic sense of space created by soaring ceilings that have been made possible due to a second level void. Stunning double storey feature windows fill the home with an abundance of natural light whilst connecting the interior to the luxurious outdoor entertaining area and creating an internal feature of the a built in spa and pool that wraps the edges of the rear walls.

32

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

Utilising the natural contours of the site, the home has been built with a step down from the warm and inviting lounge to the open plan kitchen and dining area where the beautiful Spotted Gum timber flooring transitions to a stone tile. A geometric tile splash back and exposed brick feature wall combine to create an atmosphere of urban cool in the kitchen, whilst state of the art European appliances and a hidden scullery are consistent with the appointments you’d expect of a home of this calibre.

NAUTILUS You’d expect the winner of the Housing Industry Association’s most prestigious annual award, to be outstanding in some way, after all the home is up against luxury homes by some of the country’s most awarded builders, this home however by Sydney’s Sammut Developments, winner of the HIA-CSR Australian Home of the Year 2016 is outstanding in every way.

40

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

Occupying four lots on the foreshore of Burraneer Bay with 3,950m of roofed area set over six levels, just the sheer scale of this home is quite extraordinary. Add to that the extensive list of exceptional amenities that include 7 bedrooms, 2 separate guest pavilions, 20 bathrooms, 6 kitchens, a commercial grade bar and bowling alley, a gymnasium, a cellar, an underground tunnel and music room all built on a sloping block to exacting and luxurious specifications and you start to get a very clear picture of how truly deserving this home is of it title.

Named after the winding feature staircase at the entry of the home constructed with millimeter precision to resemble a Nautilus shell, this home was destined to be a winner from the outset. With grand ideas for a resort style home, the owner approached Sammut Developments proclaiming he’d like to build ‘Australia’s best home’, there commenced a close collaboration between owner and builder that extended over several years to see his dreams realised in this spectacular residence.

42

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

In order to minimise the profile of the home the six tiered structure has been built into the sloping site. In fact almost half of the home sits below actual ground level. This required a total of 6500 cubic meters to be excavated (equivalent to 3 ½ Olympic size swimming pools), part of which was also for the 8m deep 15m long tunnel that allows the beach to be accessed without the need to descend even one stair.

The shell of the home has been constructed with concrete; over 2300 cubic meters in total were used, reinforced by 300 tonnes of steel. A home of this magnitude might seem ostentatious however the owner’s vision was for a resort style residence that could be shared and enjoyed with family and friends, where guests were welcome to stay, and feel at home and in fact contained within the enormous structure are four separate living quarters. Each of the six levels leads to a terrace which at the lowest is via a 13m glass door that totally opens the home up to the outside and the beautifully landscaped gardens. Incredible feats of engineering can be seen in many of the concrete awnings that cantilever out over the terraces, some up to five meters wide and also fitted with pergola systems and skylights.

Extensive glazing floods the home with natural light however despite this and the expansiveness of the home it has a very warm and inviting ambience, something that was commented on by HIA judges. This can be credited to both a well thought out floor plan and an abundance of quality natural materials such as luxurious timbers and stone that create an earthiness and warmth. Recycled materials sourced by the owner himself have also been used in various areas of the property including reclaimed bricks used on the walls of both the bowling alley and tunnel adding a rustic quality to both.

This extraordinary home has so many outstanding features that they’re impossible to outline, however many are said to be firsts for a residential property within Australia such as the three lifts, and 4.2m high Swiss made doors that disappear into the wall cavities. It’s not the size or the unprecedented inclusions however that saw this home recognised with one of the building industry’s highest accolades it was…“the level of detail and mirror-perfect finish, delivered spot-on every time over the vast amount of rooms…” that most impressed the judges.

A total of 750 tradespeople worked on Nautilus over the duration of the project with over 100 individual tradespeople on site at one time on many occasions, requiring expert coordination by the Sammut team. Sammut carried out all the landscaping work which included the restoration of the heritage listed boat shed and the demolition of a harbor pool to create the beach. Over 6000 plants were installed, in the stunning terraced gardens many of which were mature trees, including a 3.5-tonne magnolia tree that was craned in.

The success of the project is credited as a collaborative effort between the owner who had a passion to see this incredible home come to life, the architect who helped make it work and the builder. Considering the enormity of the scope of work, the delivery of a home of this size and of this caliber in just three years is nothing short of remarkable a true testament to the skill and experience of this award winning team.

Out of this World

LIGHTING WOW! This is what you’re most likely to utter when viewing one of Sharon Marston’s lighting installations for the first time. Not because of the size although some of her installations are nearly room size, and not because of the intricacy of detail that goes into each of the installations with some containing several thousand pieces woven together, but purely because of the ethereal quality of her work that gives it a look that is quite ‘out of this world’.

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

55

It’s easy to see how Marston’s background in jewellery design may have influenced her work, with each installation sparkling with gem-like qualities, however it was while photographing costume designs during her work in the theatre and noticing how light interacted with woven nylon that her interest in lighting design was first sparked.

56

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

Since 1997 Marston has experimented with a diverse range of materials fusing fine bone china, hand-blown glass, and woven polymers with fibre optic filaments in unique ways that create the ethereal qualities that are present in all her work irrespective of shape and size.

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

57

The breathtaking pieces have certainly captured people’s attention and the company’s impressive client list includes luxury private residences all of the world and a number of prestigious commercial installations including Harrods, King of Saudi Arabia’s Royal Lobbies, Trump Soho Tower in New York, Michelin star restaurants in London and a recent mammouth sized sculptural installation at the Marina Bay Sands casino in Singapore

58

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

Each Sharon Marston light is designed and engineered specifically for the space, ensuring that every piece is completely unique and optimal for its surroundings. The company now has a team of technicians and engineers who work directly with clients as well as architects and interior designers, to produce these stunning intricate works of art. A standard size installation takes around three months to build at an investment of GBP10,000 plus with some larger installations taking up to 7 months to create and costing several hundred thousand pounds. For more on Sharon Marston, see

www.sharonmarston.com

Measuring 20m in length 10m in width and 15m in height, this stunning installation at Marina Bay Sands Casino in Singapore incorporates 48,000 hand-crafted flora inspired shapes that tumble down the atrium and encircle the two escalators at the entrance and took over 7 months to complete.

MD+A Architects have been working with homeowners for over a decade to produce a substantial portfolio of spectacular homes and satisfied clients.

There are many talented architects who can claim the same, however the MD+A difference is a unique integrated design and construction project delivery system that produces this result in less time, with less hassle and for less cost for both the design and completion of your new home. We do this entirely through the intelligence and efficiency of the revolutionary process we have created.

HOW WE WORK The first thing we do is establish a detailed and comprehensive brief. We then fully design a concept set of drawings which includes all plans, elevations, sections, perspectives and even a fly around video so you can fully appreciate our vision for your new home. From here you are able to make any changes and modifications you like to finalise the design and enable us to prepare a full cost estimate for the project. At this point we will offer you our comprehensive range of services right through to construction completion. Each option is fully itemised so that you may pick and choose exactly which services you need. Our construction delivery system has been custom designed and refined over many years to deliver you control and flexibility and provide substantial cost savings. You will have a very clear picture of the total build price based on actual quotes before you sign any contract. During the project you can make design alterations which may or may not effect the budget without hassle or penalty. The MD+A method is far superior to a conventional lump sum fixed price quote method. Our system has the owner and builder working together harmoniously with clear expectations which provides a win, win situation. MD+A offers all the respective benefits you receive working separately with an architect and a builder, but in one simple process.

Adding to the high impact interior is Brendan’s expert curation of statement furniture and décor – many of which are custom made. The house is punctuated by these visual highs, while their treatment and placement make them seem natural and effortless.

TRANSFORMATION Creating a functional modern home, whilst maintaining the home’s classic characteristics is not an easy achievement. Situated on one of the area’s most prestigious streets, on a huge 1851m2 block, a key objective in the transformation of ‘Carrington Lodge’ was to stay true to the original French pavilion/boutique style of the home, whilst improving the floor plan and adding extra living space. Whilst the changes to the façade may not have been significant, inside is a totally different story. The home has been opened up

substantially to create a modern space, perfect for family living. At the centre of the home is an expansive openplan, kitchen, living and dining area with high ceilings and feature timber flooring that flows through the entire area. With a new island bench, the stunning chef’s kitchen includes an amazing amount of storage, corian stone bench-tops, and new state of the art, European appliances.

The home is flooded with light, thanks to extensive skylights and walls of stacking French doors and arched windows - a design characteristic that has been maintained throughout the home including the bay windows in the master bedroom and formal lounge at the front of the home. The stackable doors open on two sides to a large, covered alfresco area, creating a seamlessness between the interior and exterior living areas. An entertainers dream, the alfresco includes a built-in gas fireplace and barbeque, and a wall mounted television. Planning For The Future: How to Look After A Bottle Of Wine For A Celebration 30 Years From Now Buying a bottle of fine wine for drinking far into the future is easier said than done. However with planning, and a decent wine cellar, it can be achieved with a minimum of fuss. In your lifetime, how far have you realistically planned into the future? Discounting dull commitments such as mortgages, the reality is that many of us live day-to-day, week-toweek, and month-to-month, without any real consideration for what the coming years may hold - that’s all part of the surprise. However, wine aficionados may see things a little differently. When they purchase a rare, valuable bottle of wine, there is little to no chance that they’ll be opening it to accompany that evening’s fish and chips. More likely, it will

102

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

take pride of place in a fine wine cellar, left to age in meticulously-controlled conditions for years - perhaps even decades. Almost for as long as wine has been made and consumed by humans (a 9,000 year old a rice and honey effort from Ancient China is the earliest known example, according to Scientific American) we’ve been keeping that certain bottle on the rack for only the most special of occasions. With this in mind, have you ever considered purchasing a vino that you won’t drink until far

into the future? It’s not simply a case of picking a bottle of the shelf, putting it into wine storage and hoping for the best in three decades’ time the process of caring for an aged wine is a little more complicated than that. Here’s how you can pick a wine that will serve you will in the future! Choose a wine designed to age Not just any wine will improve with age. According to an article written by Pete Spande for Business Insider Australia, the vast majority of wines that we buy should be consumed within a comparatively short five years, with

many deteriorating just 18 months after bottling. The truth is, only a select few wines can age well past the 20 year mark. Even the most reputable of wine years can have a bad run of weather, ruining the terroir and markedly decreasing life expectancy. Therefore, it can pay to do your homework with regards to how your chosen year ranks, and there are numerous online sources to help you. Additionally, it’s also worth bearing in mind that if you had your heart set on a beautiful red Burgundy, but conditions weren’t especially great that year, you can always look around for a similar vino in a different area that enjoyed a stellar growing period.

Only a select few wines can age well past the 20 year mark. There are also a great raft of wines made with ageing in mind, and these tend to be reds wrought from the classic wine regions of Europe - Bordeaux, Burgundy, Piedmont and Rioja. Clarets from California’s Napa Valley are also a viable option. Part with the cash and buy the bottle The very best wines aren’t even up for sale for a fair few years after they are harvested. This can actually work in your favour, as you’ll be able to do a little research to ensure that you get exactly the bottle that you’re after. The longer the time span between the vintage year of the wine and its actual release date, the more expensive they tend to be. This is because you’re paying for both the wine itself, and the five or six years that it has been in storage.

How to buy your bottle

Store it properly

Don’t just go to your local supermarket and pick a bottle off the shelf - the chances are that it won’t be age worthy. For a wine with quality practically guaranteed, most connoisseurs will either head to a specialist auction or make their way to the winery itself. The very best wines aren’t sold until years after their harvest.

You’ve invested a lot of time, effort and money into choosing that perfect bottle of wine, so it would make little sense to store it improperly. Wine aficionados will know that light and heat can destroy a spectacular wine in mere hours, so keeping it in the correct conditions is vital if you want your wine to taste heavenly in 30 years’ time.

In this modern world of instant communication, there are several wine auctions that take place online. These auctions can be a veritable treasure trove of rare wines, and if the auction goes your way, you may even pay less than you were initially prepared to. It can also help to research which wines will be up for grabs - this will leave you better prepared and help you focus on the bottle that you really want.

You’ve invested a lot of time, effort and money into choosing that perfect bottle of wine, so it would make little sense to store it improperly. By going directly to the winery, though, you may well be able to pick up a bottle that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. Additionally, you can guarantee that the wine you pick up will have been kept in absolute optimal conditions - something that cannot always be said for those sold at auction. It only takes a few hours of direct sunlight or warm temperatures to ruin a bottle forever, so when you buy at the winery itself, you do so with the greatest peace of mind.

There are many storage solutions out there, but the key is to placing your valuable bottles in a climate-controlled wine cellar or cabinet, such as one from the wide range of Vintec and Transtherm wine cabinets. With wine cellaring cabinets from small 30 bottles units, to 4000 bottle Walk-In Cellars, and an extensive array of styles and features, Vintec and Transtherm wine cabinets have a wine storage solution to suit every need. All fully climate-controlled, they recreate the perfect storage conditions found in the best natural underground cellars to protect your wines, i.e: l by eliminating important temperature variations which denature your wines. l by maintaining humidity levels above 50%, so corks don’t dry and crack. l by keeping UV light away from your wine, with specially treated tinted glass doors Vintec and Transtherm are recommended by the most respected wine critics and are chosen by the leading sommeliers and restaurants across Asia Pacific. “There is not a square wall in the house – everything is off the radius” Director Peter Phokos said of the build, and looking around the time and skill that has gone into achieving the stunning end result is very apparent. Using a mix of high quality materials and detailed finishes, superior craftsmanship was absolutely essential to enable each unique feature to combine together and create the luxurious end result. With precision paramount, two stonemasons worked full time on the extensive stone work throughout the home cutting each stone individually both to size and to varied widths.

Working with a steep, sloping site and a unique fan shaped design that enabled the home to take full advantage of the water views, the complexity of the build was not restricted to the internal finishes. Incredible accuracy was required when pegging the site to ensure the home would piece together perfectly.

Even the beautiful infinity edge pool posed difficulties being positioned above a council sewer liner requiring exceptional care throughout construction. With the complexity of the build and with so many superior finishes throughout you may be surprised to hear what Peter Phokos is most proud of. “…the angled roof on the front of the building, the grooves of the roof blades line up with the inside of the house so that if you put a laser line through that, they would be dead straight, that gives me the most pleasure.” A humble response from the builder whose team has created this incredible landmark home despite the many obstacles and with the attention to detail seen throughout, clearly deserving winners of this prestigious award.

Next, add a discerning client who desires a home that not only represents the highlights of their own travel experiences, but that provides a feeling of wellbeing that surpasses their stays in some of the world’s most glamorous hotels. The result? Luxe Lodge.

Almost every element of this high-end luxury hotel-esque ‘weekend retreat’, (yes this is just the owners weekender), was custom designed by Mark Gacesa of Ultrapsace who worked on the client’s main residence located in Brisbane. And with an area of around 900sqm this home boasts so many unique features they’re difficult to mention.

Mark’s material specifications included extensive use of timber, both inside and out, complemented by natural stone and rock as well as marbles and granites all. Perhaps less expected is the use of natural hides, real and faux fur, leathers, and even thatched wall coverings. Plenty of metal was used too, but custom finished of course to a specific shade to give it an aged bronze appearance.

FOR GREAT TASTE JUST ADD STEAM Now you can be sure of exactly the right amount of steam to create delicious results every time – effortlessly. The ProCombiPlus™ oven features our advanced humidity sensor to ensure the ideal taste, texture and colour when roasting meat, steaming vegetables, baking soufflés or making delicious SousVide dishes.

Humidity also prevents moisture from evaporating, locking in taste and preserving the texture of your ingredients with gentle and even heating so that nothing gets destroyed. This way, you get a golden brown crisp exterior without overcooking or under-cooking the interior. When baking, steam allows dough to rise more quickly and thoroughly because of how well it conducts heat. The humidity also prevents the dough’s surface from drying out too quickly and causing resistance in the rising process. Steam’s heat also produces a more complex caramelisation on the dough’s surface, creating thick and delicious crusts every time.

Understanding why heat creates taste and texture allows you to explore the potential of every ingredient, whether it’s precision induction heating or exciting new techniques such as steam and SousVide. The First

DOLCE & GABBANA/SMEG REFRIGERATOR ARRIVES

in Australia

Launched to worldwide acclaim at the Milan Design Fair in April (2016), the first Dolce & Gabbana/Smeg limited edition hand-painted refrigerator has arrived in Australia!

SYDNEY CUSTOM HOMES

127

In an innovative collaboration between the revered Italian fashion designers and the country’s leading kitchen appliance supplier, a strictly limited edition of 100 retro design FAB28 refrigerators will be hand-painted by a group of Sicilian artists, with each unique design reflecting the sizzling colour and Sicilian folklore that D&G is so famous for. Each refrigerator takes many, many hours to complete so the production rate is slow and the queue of interested buyers long!

The latter, based in Palermo, has created two designs, each depicting a traditional scene from Sicilian life. One shows fishermen catching a large octopus, with Mount Etna in the background while the other shows a verdant agricultural scene with lemons and sunflowers and a farmer picking his fruit by the light of the moon. Each refrigerator is completely covered in hand-painted artwork – front, sides and top – that relates to the signature scene on the door front.

Australia’s first D&G hand-painted refrigerator, painted by Sicilian brothers Antonio and Giuseppe Bevilacqua, will go on display at Winnings’ new store in Canberra. Characterised by a chromatic explosion of yellows and reds inspired by the Sicilian sun and the lava of Mt Etna, the design features sumptuous friezes and rich geometric patterns depicting the battle between Argante and Tancredi and another with Anthea of Babylon.

A total of 100 FAB28s will be transformed into luxury items that epitomise the passion for style and design that both Dolce & Gabbana and the family-owned Smeg brand are revered for.

An impressive collection of six refrigerators has just been completed, this time by renowned Sicilian artists Gianfranco Fiore, Tommaso Provenzano and Michelangelo Lacagnina.

Prices and availability in Australia on application.

No two refrigerators are the same and numbers are strictly limited to just 100 – so each piece is destined to be the most highly desirable collector’s item or family heirloom.

Award Winning

DESIGN

With a string of top industry accolades to their name, one Australian design team have been leading the way in contemporary kitchen and bathroom design combining sleek and sophisticated finishes with function in ways that are catching not only the eye of judges. The dynamic duo behind Minosa Design - Directors Darren Genner and Simona Castagna, formed Minosa Design in 2002 combining Simona’s many years of experience in interior design with Darren’s 25 years experience in trades as both a wood machinist and in production management in the kitchen industry. It is perhaps a fusion of both talents in theoretical design and practical trade experience that has made this team so successful. Their designs are certainly stand outs – mixing luxurious materials in sophisticated ways that push the boundaries of traditional conceptions of kitchen and bathroom design.

A dilapidated 1920’s heritage listed home in Sydney’s Crows Nest had been the home to squatters and the homeless for many years before being saved by its new owners with a vision to transform it in to a magnificent family home. The design for the new kitchen and bathroom by Minosa that formed part of the rear extension required careful consideration. Whilst being contemporary and finished with state of the art appliances and top quality materials the new areas of the home had to blend harmoniously with the restored heritage parts of the home. Clean and simple lines including cabinetry which conceals most of the kitchen functions and expert material choices such as timber veneer and a large format tile imported from Europe have been carried through to the bathroom, imbuing both areas with a rustic warmth whilst having a contemporary urban feel.

A Parisian style kitchen that ‘disappears’ was the brief for this Woollahra renovation and Minosa have executed it with stunning effect. The room is both luxurious and sophisticated whilst still having a warmth and elegance that epitomises European style. The ‘French’ feel has been achieved with panelled walls painted a brilliant white, contrasting with a modern twist on traditional herringbone flooring that has used longer boards stained in a dark chocolate and finished with a matt polyurethane coating. Panelled pocket doors that match the wall panelling glide open effortlessly to reveal a large work zone and small appliances. Luxurious hand-picked Calacatta marble tops both the island bench and its side panels whilst a servery in French Oak adds a touch of rustic ambiance to the room. In order to maintain the streamlined appearance, electronic door openers were applied to the fridge and freezer eliminating the need for handles on the doors and also function cleverly to close the doors if accidentally left ajar. German manufacturer TECE consistently ask…

Can we do it better, faster, more attractively?

TECElux is the toilet terminal for all toilet functions of today—and tomorrow.

Features of the TECElux include: ■

Press and flush was yesterday. The toilet of today can do so much more: Rinse and blow dry, purify the air, and flush automatically. But often, the aesthetics are sacrificed for other benefits. TECE has now created a form that unites all functions. TECElux places the system components behind the wall, where they are invisible. An extremely flat glass facing closes the inspection opening and conceals the cistern. The connections for water and power are concealed behind the glass facing as well as optional odour trap and height adjustments.

LED “sen-Touch” flushing system-the buttons illuminate as you approach the terminal & flush operates electronically An invisible ”ceramic-Air” air freshening/odour extracting device located behind the glass panel The “m-Lift” function allowing you to adjust the height of the ceramic pan, even after installation Easy access panel to allow upgrades and maintenance on all these features inside the wall

With its simple aesthetics, TECElux blends in beautifully with the architecture of any bathroom.

TECElux Mini flush plate TECElux Mini is an electronic, real glass flush plate for the TECE cistern. Flush actuation is touch-free or by means of a light tap on the button area. The approach sensor recognises when a person approaches and activates the illumination of the button area, additionally serving as an orientation help in the dark. Using a programmable remote control it is possible to individually set the recognition range, actuation time and the illumination level of the display. It is also possible to set additional functions such as a hygiene flush or automatic flush with the remote control. TECElux Mini has a sleek minimalist design in black or white scratch resistant glass and can be flush mounted.

Another successful Ceerose project, Harbour Mill at Pyrmont cleverly weaves modern apartments within the remnant facade of the Edwin Davey Flour Mill, which was built in 1896. Preserving as much of the mill’s history as possible was a priority for Mr Doueihi because of a family connection to the site. His father ran a bakery in Cowper Street, Granville, and he’d often take the young Edward to the mill to collect supplies. An integral feature of the design was restoring the remnant facade, and integrating it with the new structure The facade of the new structure is built from large sliding panels which reference the original warehouses of the area, and which offer excellent environmental performance.

Cliff Face Renovation This luxury renovation project by Mardini Constructions is outstanding in more ways than one. A 1914 heritage home in Bellevue Hill perched more than 18m above street level on a fragile rock formation required a complete renovation. In quite a dilapidated condition with extensive dry rot, and termite damage renovation of the near century old home would have been a daunting task in itself. Add to this, however, the brief to create a new street level garage, a cantilevered concrete pool and a poolside cabana where currently the rock foundations of the home existed and you start to get a clearer picture of what was achieved.

P R O J EC T F E AT U R E M A R D I N I C O N ST RU C T I O N S

Blending new with old in this project was unlike any usual type of renovation, it required major excavation of the site. In total over 2500 tonnes of rock and soil were removed. Most remarkably, as a result of both the steepness of the site and the lack of access, tradesmen were initially required to abseil down the 18m cliff face and excavate with jackhammers, in order to then create a platform for a 4 tonne excavator. Over 1000 tonnes of sandstone excavated from the site was then cut into blocks of random shapes and sizes. A stonemason then meticulously hand laid the cut blocks used to create the 12m high wall that extends from the new cabana up to the original house. Some of the rock face wall was also finished by stonemasons and left exposed, to stunning effect. An 18m lift shaft was also installed in the rock face, again posing considerable difficulties with concerns that there would be water leakage into the lift shaft pit at garage level, that sat below the water table. Considering the many obstacles, and the exceptional outcome of this project, it’s no surprise that Mardini Constructions were recognised by their peers, receiving the NSW 2012 Master Builders Association Award for Best House Addition / Alteration over $5 million.

Labour of Love As a builder who works on multi-million dollar projects you would expect considerable care and love to go into building his own home, and this is definitely evident in this beautiful Earlwood property, the family home of Director and owner of Mardini Constructions, Elvis Mardini.

Built on a site that used to house an old bungalow style shop-front that Elvis frequented as a child, is now a tri-level, 5 bedroom home that incorporates ample space for their growing family and open-plan living spaces, amplified by 5m high ceilings in the living areas. Finished with a selection of natural materials, including reclaimed sandstone and recycled jarrah timber, the home has a lovely,

natural warmth, whilst exquisite chandeliers and antiques give the home a luxurious ambience. Flowing gracefully over the natural contours of the site, the rear of the home opens out to a fabulous alfresco area, which leads down to the mosaic tiled pool and a rear cabana for intimate evening soirees.

Funky Monkey Bars is the brainchild of Shane Roberts, who back in 2009 resorted to designing his own set of monkey bars for his two young daughters after failing to find what he wanted in pre-fabricated sets. Bombarded by requests from neighbours and friends to build one for them too, Shane developed Funky Monkey Bars into a business and in 2014, Shane was joined by Colin Burdle, a structural engineer from the UK who saw further possibilities for the concept in both additional flexibility and features that now make ‘Funky Monkey Bar’s fully customisable to the requirements of each individual family. The design and quality of the Funk Monkey Bar playgrounds have caused the company sales to skyrocket and their Yangebup, Perth-based business has recently been awarded the Business News Rising Stars Award, recognised as one of the Top-10 fastest growing companies in Western Australia. With their quality construction and flexible designs it’s no wonder these modular sets of colourful monkey bars are turning the heads of practical parents who are looking to get kids outside and active.

There are three restaurants serving world-class food, the 360 Rooftop Restaurant, with panoramic ocean views and a choice of Indonesian and western food, SONO Teppanyaki offering contemporary Japanese cuisine, and live cooking shows, and Sea Fire Salt, the cliff-side BBQ restaurant. For those who want to venture out for the evening for an intimate and romantic evening alone, the resort also offers Dining by Design - a private dining experience where couples can choose their own menu as well as dining location around the resort. With everything on offer Anantara Uluwatu Bali Resort & Spa is a fabulous place to begin… or continue your romantic journey.

JUNGLE HOUSE Brazil Aptly named ‘Jungle House’, this home in Brazil designed by architects at Studio MK27 is situated amongst dense Rain Forrest like vegetation in a mountainous area of the Paulista Shore. Built into the topography of the site the home has been designed to optimise the connection between architecture and nature, projecting out from it’s mountainside location to blend with the tree tops and take in the views in the distance.

Emphasising the connection with nature, a considerable amount of timber has been used in the construction of the home including timber screens that cover windows and bedroom balconies. The large open plan living area of the home is on the upper level and open on both sides to enjoy cross ventilation. On one side Jacuzzis and a fire pit enjoy a connection with the mountain whilst on the opposite side an expansive deck with infinity edge pool has been built into the concrete slab with views looking out through the surrounding tropical vegetation to the ocean in the distance.
