Babylon is a name that immediately evokes a sense of beauty, luxury, and a hint of drama and indulgence and this aptly named Noosa canalfront home captures that spirit in every way. Built by St Andrews Constructions, the exceptional 650sqm residence is beautifully attuned to its subtropical setting, opening to the water, the breeze and that soft Queensland light. Yet beyond that openness, the home reveals a luxurious, almost decadent undertone: rich textures, crafted finishes and spaces that effortlessly shift from laid-back daytime living to moodier, intimate evenings. It’s a home designed to enjoy, to escape in, and to entertain in absolute style. Anchored by a robust blockwork and concrete structure, the house immediately commands attention, but materiality softens its form. Natural crazy-pave, face brick and thermally treated hemlock wrap the exterior in warm, tactile layers. Inside, the palette becomes even more inviting with oak wall cladding, breezeway brick, Venetian plaster and natural stone tiles combined with intentional greenery that softens the architecture and brings a subtle softness to the concrete.

eople often tell me that I write the way I speak. I’m not entirely sure whether that’s a compliment. When I speak, I tend to repeat myself, hesitate, and assume I’m making far more sense than I probably am. Whenever I’m filmed or interviewed, on radio, TV, or in situations where I don’t know the interviewer, I try my best to be articulate. I’ve learned, sometimes the hard way, that words can scatter, be interpreted a dozen different ways, or end up sounding nothing like what I intended.
We usually think of ‘Chinese whispers’ as something that requires a long chain of people, miscommunicating a message. But the truth is, this can happen with just one person. You can feel you have communicated something quite clearly and yet when it is repeated to another person, it can be mind-blowingly different to what you have just said. Even my relationship with my phone and me speaking into the microphone can turn out quite differently than what I had intended.. still… let’s give it a go, because I’d like to share some thoughts about the paintings that form my latest exhibition “Forever Young” and a little about the story of the photographs behind them. A few threads of life brought me to Australian photographer Colin Beard. One of them was my dear friend Christo Gillard, a man of many skills and an even better storyteller. I’ve spent countless hours in the surf with him, talking music, life, fashion, and whatever else caught his imagination that day. Christo introduced me to Kaye Perkins from Hop On It Design - Kaye was friends with Colin and had secured the rights to Colin’s photographic archive. After a conversation with Colin, she generously gave me access to a selection of his images for me to paint. When Colin Beard was out there with his camera, he wasn’t simply photographing musicians, he was among them. Yes, being a staff photographer for the Australian Rock n Roll magazine GoSet, which preceded Roling Stone, granted him access, but what mattered more was his instinct, his presence and his timing. You sometimes meet someone who has captured a rare moment with someone famous, a sliver of honesty that only happens once. But what I received from Colin was a virtual goldmine of my musical heroes, captured in intimacy and authenticity and I’ve been given the great gift of translating those moments into paint, hoping I’ve done them justice.

The Art of SMART AIR JARtB House is not a typical home – it is a lived work of art. With its bold sculptural façade, the play of geometric forms, and a floating upper volume wrapped in murals, the structure completely blurs the line between art and architecture. Designed by leading Melbourne architect Billy Kavellaris of KUD for his own family, every element of this extraordinary residence is composed with precision. It is a home defined by clean lines and deliberate geometry. Ceiling planes glide without interruption. Walls meet with sharp precision. Light moves through the space in a way that is entirely intentional, guided by the home’s sculptural composition. In a home built on purity of line and spatial discipline, traditional air-conditioning can easily undermine the architecture. Grilles, bulkheads, return vents and access panels all interrupt the very qualities the design depends on. As a result, AirSmart became a natural choice for Billy’s home. “I chose it for several reasons, the Venturi effect, which is how the air moves through the system and the air purification properties but it also integrates architecturally so beautifully most mechanical systems look ugly” Billy says. “They fight the architecture whereas AirSmart respects it.”

Inside, the house unfolds along a 55-metre ‘gallery’ that stretches from the front door through to the rear – a deliberate choreography of circulation and space, where every wall, opening and material has been considered as carefully as the art that lines the walls. Along this uninterrupted axis, traditional grilles would have fractured the sightlines and weakened the gallery effect. AirSmart’s concealed slots and shadow-line outlets allowed air conditioning to run the full length of the spine without ever being seen.

Across 800sqm, the home opens itself to the coastline via three angled forms that capture long ocean views and encourage sea breezes through open living spaces. Materiality is the defining signature of this exceptional residence. More than 1,500 sandstone blocks, each over 300 kilograms, were craned into place to form walls that feel carved from the coastline. Copper, used for the roof and screening and as accents throughout the home add a luxurious element that will age gracefully with the salt air. Exposed timber struts and off-form concrete tie everything together with an honest, tactile beauty. The combination is powerful - earthy, architectural and infused with the essence of its oceanside setting.
