Patter phrases to say as you model the letters or as students form the letters. This aspect of the multi-sensory approach particularly supports students who are auditory learners as they associate the patter with the motor movements to form each letter.

Structure of the Foundation workbook

Letters are presented in a sequence based on the directional movements required: anticlockwise letters, clockwise letters, i family letters and u family letters.

Completing the pages in this sequence will help students develop automaticity of letter formation, as the similarities of movement are highlighted. Numeral shapes are presented at the back of the book but can be completed at any time, to suit your program.

Each letter is introduced with an alliterative noun group as a chant, for example ‘slippery seal s s s’. The noun group promotes vocabulary development and understanding about labels (nouns) and describing words (adjectives), as well as the sounds in words and the letters used to represent the sounds (spelling patterns). Students are not expected to be able to read the chants for themselves at this level, but once the chant is read to them, they can begin to focus on the letters and their sounds and learn to recognise the words by sight. The alliterative noun group and illustrations provide the context for students’ handwriting practice.

The activities on each double page spread then carefully scaffold students through patterning activities, to tracking letters, tracing letters and then to writing their own letters. Start dots and directional arrows give extra support. Activities reinforce the individual letter movement, direction, shape and where each letter starts and finishes. (See the inside front cover for more information about page features.)

Handwriting is linked to the ability to spell. Neat and legible handwriting assists students to develop kinaesthetic and visual memory for letter sequences in spelling. There is a great deal of research that equates children’s good fine motor control with legible handwriting and in turn legible handwriting with spelling ability.

A handwriting lesson

Use the poster on the back cover to reinforce the process of getting ready to write (comfortable posture, warming up shoulders, hands and fingers), getting set to write (considering right or left handedness, correct and relaxed pencil grip), and then writing (correct paper position).

When getting ready to write, use large arm movements as warm-up activities to establish kinaesthetic memory for the handwriting movements. Other activities for developing fine motor control and hand and finger strength are included on the Handwriting Rules!

Introduce the letter name and chant. Develop students’ vocabulary and interest by discussing the animal in the chant and its features. Use the chant to establish the vocabulary and alliteration links with each letter. You may also choose to discuss any anthropomorphism in the visual or verbal text, where animals have been given human characteristics. Have students repeat the chant.

Demonstrate and model the movement and shape of the focus letter. If you have a tablet or smart phone available, download a QR code reader from the App Store and scan the QR code at the bottom of each spread to view an animation showing correct letter formation. Or use an interactive whiteboard to display the animations supplied on the Handwriting Rules!

Explain the head, body and tail lines and the creature used to identify which lines each letter fits between.

Have students practise on their appropriate workbook pages. Reinforce correct letter shape and size, as well as consistency of letter slope.

Assessment

Students can keep track of their handwriting progress by colouring the letters on the ‘My Progress Chart’ on pages 2 and 3.

Teacher assessment of student progress can take place at any time through observation and interaction with students as they are engaged in writing tasks.

Assess students’ pencil grip and hand control and watch that letters are formed correctly with consistent size, shape and slope. Observe students to ensure that movements are fluent and correct. Continued modelling and practice will develop students’ automaticity in correctly forming the letters. More information and checklists can be found on the Handwriting Rules! Victoria CD F–2.

Tear-off desk strip A tear-off desk strip has been provided, with letters on one side and numerals on the other. Use a permanent marker to write each student’s name on their desk strip so they have it as a model.
