Dear Cushing Friends, As we begin a new year and new decade, we at Cushing have much to be grateful for. I am privileged to witness daily what makes Cushing such an extraordinary school: the excitement for learning and outstanding teaching in our classrooms, the amazing breadth of interests and talents our students pursue beyond the classroom, and the warmth and kindness of our community. Along with these measures of vibrant campus life, we celebrate the following milestones:



• The fiscal year that ended June 30 was record-breaking, with the highest-ever level of giving to

our annual fund. Included in this magazine is the annual report, listing our honor roll of donors from July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2019. My sincere and heartfelt thanks to all who have supported Cushing and made this success possible. I invite and encourage each of you to join us by making a gift this fiscal year (by June 30, 2020), as we work to build on last year’s success.

• The admissions season was also one of our most successful ever. The current admissions cycle is on track to meet or surpass last year, connecting us with more students and families to share the life-changing education and community that Cushing offers.

If you know students who would benefit from our rich academic, athletics, and arts programs as part of our great community of Penguins, please introduce us to them.

• If you have been on campus recently or are following us on social media, you know that the ongoing physical transformation of Cushing continues. The construction of the new Cooke Hall and the refurbishment of Drew Common will be completed in Fall 2021, adding another premier dormitory in support of our residential life program. As you know, Cooke Hall is the latest in an



unparalleled series of additions and improvements in our campus renewal plan, which has been generously funded by the E.G. Watkins Family Foundation. Please enjoy this brief video highlighting this truly impressive campus transformation.

• Behind the scenes, my work with the Board of Trustees and the administration to ensure Cushing’s long-term financial sustainability continues. Know that each dollar you invest in Cushing is spent carefully, with great purpose.

THE RINK We hosted the 11th Annual Pink the Rink event on December 14, 2019 at Iorio Arena. This event, a major fundraising effort for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, includes several hockey games, raffles, contests, and a rink full of Cushing community spirit. This year’s Pink the Rink was held in memory of Michelle Benedetti, mom of Ryan Basile ’20, a player on the Thirds Boys’ Hockey team, and cousin of April Winter, Cushing’s Associate Athletic Trainer. The event raised more than $7,500 for Dana-Farber.

Cooke Hall Construction is on schedule for the new Cooke Hall dormitory, which will sit on the perimeter of Drew Common overlooking Quimby Field. Cooke will house 60 students and four faculty apartments.

Athletics Highlights Our Penguins showed their skills, sportsmanship, and perseverance this past fall, from pre-season to the playoffs. Among the highlights: Field Hockey finished the regular season ranked #2 for the Class B NEPSAC tournament. While the loss in the playoffs was very disappointing,

the team played tremendous field hockey all season long. The offense exploded for 59 goals while the defense racked up seven shutouts. It was a full team effort each practice and the results on game days were impressive. Seniors Sarah Potter ’20, Kyla Bourque ’20, Maddy Biondi ’20, and Kahnya Alicandro ’20 will be greatly missed for their talent and temperament!

Varsity Girls’ Volleyball finished the regular season ranked 4th for

the Class C NEPSAC tournament, and Cushing hosted the first home playoff quarterfinals in many years. We beat fifth-ranked St. Luke’s

and advanced to the Quarterfinals for the first time in recent history.

The team then lost a heartbreaker to the eventual Class C Champions.

Team members Kate Montigny ’20 and Julia Cole ’21 were invited to the NEPSAC All-Star tournament. Montigny ultimately made the

All NEPSAC team, while her sister Erin Montigny ’21 and Cole were

given Honorable Mention nods. This team never stopped working and

improving, beating teams that they have not beaten before, including Lawrence Academy (Class B champions in 2018). This year was a true team effort and we will miss our seven graduating seniors.

Varsity Girls’ Soccer had their best overall record in over ten years.

With senior leadership stemming from the defensive end, co-

captains Ashleigh Reid ’20 (goalie), Zoe Wilcox ’20 (center back), and

Jenna Viglione ’20 (center back) guided the team with determination and grit. Erin Rutherford ’21 led a relatively young offense with

help from Caroline Lilley ’23 and Lily Stone ’22. The team’s record

made them eligible for play-offs and gave the team excitement and ambition for continuing their growth in 2020.

Varsity Boys’ Soccer was defined by a strong work ethic, positivity, and a team-first attitude for both games and practices, resulting in significant improvement over the course of the season. The team

swept Vermont Academy in two games, both one-goal wins late in

the game. Tight wins on the road against Wilbraham & Monson and

Winchendon also provided momentum. Our captains Harry Harmon ’21, Cooper Caiozzo ’21, and Jerry Zhao ’20 showed good leadership.

JV Girls’ Volleyball finished the season with 7 wins and 6 losses,

which is remarkable given the talented teams we played and the fact that half of our team had no volleyball experience at the beginning

of the season. We are proud that our team had the desire and courage to try something new, and we are thankful that the team embraced

the chance to learn and develop together. We never felt discouraged

this season because we gave our best in every game and won and lost

with grace and grit. Our best game of the season was a 2-1 victory over Worcester in which the third set went to extra points.

Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country hosted its first home meet in three years, as home meets had been postponed due to construction on

campus. Runners enjoyed a modified version of the old course. As

a bonus for that race, Cushing beat Winchendon School. The team

also welcomed aboard two new coaches, Meredith Mikell and Teresa Kirkpatrick. The team also continues to be fortunate to have the

support of a friend of the program, Greg O’Connell. In addition to

helping to pay for members of the team to attend running camp in

the summer, this year Mr. O’Connell helped to outfit the team with long-sleeved running tops.

Football was led by captains Jack Neil ’20, Harrison Redkey ’21,

and Mike Vecchione ’21. Neil earned the Finest Contribution Award

and the Defensive Most Valuable Player for his play and leadership,

JV Girls’ Soccer carried the biggest roster (19) in recent history, with 10 players learning to play soccer for the first time.

JV Boys’ Soccer played their last game in a way that summarized

selections. Redkey, Vecchione, and Garrett Reardon ’23 received

match despite the ups and downs. They responded with impressive

addition, he garnered All-Evergreen League and All-New England Honorable Mention All-Evergreen League selections. Vecchione

earned the team’s Offensive Most Valuable Player Award for leading the team in every offensive category including rushing yards (400), receiving yards (250), and scoring (9 TDs). Other award winners

for the season were Nick Lynch ’21 (The Richard T. Devin Award for Sportsmanship) and Garrett Reardon ’23 (Most Improved).

most consistent players came through, one with a winning goal. The team was coachable, hard-working, and responded to challenges, and they did not want the season to end.

Thirds Boys’ Soccer enjoyed fantastic senior seasons from Yusuke Hirota ’20, who helped to lead the defensive unit, and two-time

captain Ryan Ebensberger ’20, who stood tall in goal all season long,

making one acrobatic save after another. A particular team highlight was a 1-0 win over Kimball Union Academy in a tightly-contested match from start to finish.

Winter Athletics Preview Varsity Girls’ Basketball has high optimism for the season

and is aiming to return to its winning ways. With strong senior

leadership in co-captain Kate Montigny ’20 plus a returning nucleus of six experienced players and five new faces, the blend of talent

promises that the Cushing girls will be an exciting, competitive,

and hardworking team to watch. With a 4-2 start to the season, the Penguins look forward to meeting the challenges of a demanding Class B schedule.

Varsity Boys’ Ice Hockey has added high-end talent to a strong core

of returning players with the goal of claiming the Elite 8 New England Prep School Championship. The 2018-19 Penguins had a successful

season, storming through the quarterfinal and semi-final games with victories over Phillips Exeter Academy and Noble & Greenough before

dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 game to Kent School in the Large School Championship game. This season, the team placed 3rd in the E.G. Watkins ’56 tournament and holds a record of 10-6-1.

Varsity Boys’ Basketball was voted #1 in the NEPSAC AA conference in a preseason coaches’ poll. Cushing opened the season in Toronto

playing two of the best programs north of the border. Following the trip to Canada, the team played in the National Prep Showcase in

New Haven, Connecticut, one of the premier basketball tournaments in the U.S. for talent and exposure. This season’s schedule includes competition against schools from 11 different states, including Florida, Kansas, and Ohio.

The mission of Cushing boys basketball is to get better every day.

With that target in mind, Cushing expects to make another push

for the AA title. The goal of the program overall is to return to the

National Prep Tournament, which has only been done once in school history (2017). The event takes place at Albertus Magnus College in

New Haven, and invitations go to the top ten teams in the country.

Varsity B Boys’ Ice Hockey is focused on skill and character

Varsity Girls’ Ice Hockey’s season outlook is more positive than

ever with continuous and consistent improvement both in on-ice

strategy and hockey IQ as well as off-ice strength and conditioning.

The team is scheduled to play every top team in the NEPSAC league and continues to hold one of the toughest schedules in the league.

The team motto, “You have to beat the best to be the best,” continues to fuel the commitment to excellence in the locker room. The roster is filled with passionate and hardworking athletes who are ready to make it to the postseason. Big wins versus rival Winchendon,

Skiing kicked off their 2020 season on January 10 at Wachusett

Mountain in Princeton, Massachusetts in the Central Massachusetts Ski League Weekly Race Series. These races include both Giant

Slalom and Slalom events and take place under the lights in an

exciting dual course format. The NEPSAC Alpine Championship will take place at Shawnee Peak in Maine on February 12, 2020.

Cushing ski racers have an impressive weekly training schedule

which includes on-hill gate training as well as dryland and ski tech

training. This year’s team boasts a number of returning veterans as well as some promising new faces. Training has been going well as

the mountain had an early November opening, and the athletes were able to log some significant snow time before winter break. After a

long layoff and a quick tune-up, the athletes are ready to step on the racecourse to compete!

Arts in Review MUSIC Our performing arts students have graced the Cushing community with an abundance of talent this year. From musicians and singers to dancers and actors, we have no shortage of inspiring performers. Furthermore, in keeping with Cushing’s commitment to offering unparalleled piano facilities for our students, we were excited to enhance our fleet of Steinway instruments when we took delivery of a new piano for our primary teaching studio in September.

We have many new enthusiastic and skilled student musicians on campus, and sixty students took weekly private instrumental and voice lessons in the first semester. In our Music Theory and Jazz History classes, students study music from various perspectives, and a Classical Music Club formed this fall to gather weekly and listen to and discuss a wide variety of art music. Two students, Ray Duan ’20 and Shirley Shi ’21 (pictured at right with Music Director Desh Hindle), were honored in November with admission to the Massachusetts Central District Band; they will represent Cushing in a festival and concert in mid-January in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The Chamber Music Players presented a program of classical music just before Thanksgiving break, while the Jazz Ensemble, Chorus, and A Cappella singers had a busy fall preparing for the annual beloved Winter Celebration in December.

In the second semester, we look forward to our first Coffeehouse event of the year; a pair of field trips to hear the Boston Symphony Orchestra; the opening of our winter musical, Into the Woods, during Winter Family Weekend in February; and a solo recital just before Spring Break. Through all of these events, lessons, classes, and performances, Cushing’s student musicians stretch themselves in creative and exciting ways.

THEATRE The fall production of Deathtrap opened on Halloween and featured two veteran actors and three additional newcomers to Cushing and our theatre program. A challenging choice with a bevy of literary references, both to Broadway thrillers and famous movies, Deathtrap seemed a natural choice boasting the title of “the longest-running comedy/thriller on Broadway.” A wonderfully creative student crew helped Mr. Craig Fifield to design and create a collection of murderous props. Deathtrap filled the audience with suspense, provided numerous cliffhanger scenes, and lived up to its reputation for Broadway-level entertainment.

Now our theatre program is gearing up for the musical Into the Woods. Musically challenging and quite different in style and genre from last year’s West Side Story, this musical offers unique opportunities for a variety of versatile and strong actors and musicians. Competitive auditions yielded a cast and crew of more than 45 people, including faculty directors. The talented cast, uniquely comprised of many seniors, promises to give a beautiful telling of Sondheim’s classic show. We already know how sorely our theatre program will miss these seniors after they graduate this spring!

Two field trips in the fall offered Performing Arts students a chance to visit Boston and see national premieres of The Purists at The Huntington Theatre and Moby Dick at The American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge. Any opportunity to see productions on a professional or community/ school level is encouraged by the department and greatly enjoyed by students and faculty alike. The department is looking forward to the annual spring New York City trip for seniors, and a London and Ireland trip is currently on the books for the spring of 2021. The more theatre, the better!

DANCE The Dance program has grown substantially over the past ten years, increasing in the number of experienced dancers who come to Cushing in part because they can continue with their dance experience in a serious, supportive, and unique way. Cushing dance students can take dance classes during the academic day for academic credit, which allows them to participate in other areas of interest after school, including sports, theatre, or art. Students can alternatively choose the After-School Dance Program, which focuses on nurturing students’ creativity as they learn the basics of composition, choreography, and technique.

Academic classes in dance build not only technique in modern dance, ballet, and contemporary movement but also develop an appreciation of dance as an art form through the study of choreography, composition, dance history, and improvisation.

Students leave Cushing able to major or minor in dance in college, or they may use their dance experience to enrich their work in all areas of life and business.

This past fall the dance program produced one major concert and also performed for Fall Family Weekend, Admissions Open House events, and Winter Celebration. The annual fall concert, Fusion, was packed full of original student choreography. Styles ranged from classical ballet to modern dance, contemporary, classic jazz, and hip hop. Highlights of the student work included The Goddess Glimpse, choreographed by seniors Angela Tao ’20 and Barbara Wang ’20 to express their awe of Buddhist statues they had the opportunity to view in China over the summer. Sophomore Chloe Hachey ’22 created a moving work, People Help the People, to express the need to act kindly towards others. Senior Ashleigh Reid ’20 created a moving portrait of a powerful poem written and spoken by the PulitzerPrize winning poet, Toni Morrison. Denishawn work is always present in Cushing’s dance concerts, as Director Rebecca Rice and her mother, Mona Rice, founder of the Cushing Dance program, studied with their grandmother and mother, Marion Rice, a student of Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, creators of the Denishawn style. This year the piece was Waltz in A Minor, created by Marion Rice in the 1930s and passed on through three generations of the Rice women dancers.

New Art Gallery Dedicated to Rod Tate ‘57 On the evening of November 7, Cushing dedicated a new art gallery to the late Vernon R. “Rod” Tate ’57, a longtime devoted member of the Cushing family as an alumnus, Trustee, and Trustee Emeritus.

As a kid, I was always excited about things that other kids were not. When I read Cosmos by Carl Sagan, his passion for astronomy was a huge influence on me. And then there was Star Trek. I only watched the show as a kid because my parents did, but later I began watching Star Trek: The Next Generation and I was hooked. In college, Star Trek became more than just a TV show for me; the idea of the potential to find new frontiers in outer space is a powerfully positive message that offers hope. As we deal with intense world problems like climate change, the fictional universe of Star Trek suggests we can tackle challenges and succeed, even becoming better. I love bringing that message to teenagers now.

Professionally, two of my high school science teachers inspired me tremendously. They were a married couple at Orme who taught me chemistry, astronomy, and geology. They supported me and believed in me. For any student that means the world.

being a mom and a career teacher. As for many women, it can be very difficult to regain that balance. After our son was born, I spent my “me” time running, which helped me work on myself, and I became better at running. I even ran the Boston Marathon twice.

Tell us about your other interests outside the classroom.

SCUBA—when I was teaching in California, I earned my certification as a Divemaster and then did a ton of diving with students when I taught in Florida. Other interests include horseback riding, karate (I have a black belt), and writing. I have published two science fiction stories and am working on a novel, and I published a nonfiction book (Faster After Baby) about running post-pregnancy.

Blogging is a current interest of mine, as well.

What is your favorite thing about Cushing?

The students here are very genuine, and they truly enjoy their time here. The Cushing community has a really grounded sense of identity and purpose, which I have observed is not always the case for schools.

WATKINS SCHOLARS

Students share their experiences at Cushing The Watkins Scholar Program, established in 2016 by Trustee Emeritus Edward G. Watkins ’56 and the E.G. Watkins Family Foundation, awards full, need-based scholarships to twenty high-achieving students who possess a love of learning, strong leadership skills, and a desire to contribute significantly to Cushing Academy. This year the first class of Watkins Scholars is graduating, and here they reflect on their time at Cushing.

Ashleigh Reid ’20 Ashleigh Reid remembers that when she first visited Cushing, everyone said hello, which made her feel like she already belonged. And so the decision to come to Cushing was an easy one! Now, nearly four years later, she can’t believe graduation is just a few months away. Since becoming a Penguin through the Watkins Scholar program in her freshman year, Ashleigh has taken advantage of many opportunities and is proud of having put herself out there by trying new things. She has danced and played basketball, tennis, and volleyball—all for the first time! She went from being a brand-new dancer to having a solo that she choreographed herself in the dance recital. Through these experiences, Cushing helped bring her out of her shell, exposed her to people from all over the world, and opened many doors for her future. “Cushing changed how I think about things,” Ashleigh says. “I am a better writer; I know how to have meaningful conversations with people of other beliefs and values; and, I learned that I can be an athlete and an artist, and I can make a difference.”

Lucy Norton ’20 Lucy Norton recalls writing a letter her freshman year to the Watkins Family Foundation thanking them for their generosity. She had a keen awareness of the immense honor it was to be named a Watkins Scholar, and that with that honor came responsibility: “I wanted to prove to them they bet on the right girl,” she recalls. Now, in her role as Student Body Co-President, Lucy takes the microphone every week and leads the Cushing community through Friday assemblies. Four years ago she never could have pictured herself confident enough to speak in front of the entire school, but today she sees her role as one way she can give back. Lucy plays volleyball, ice hockey, and softball, and she enjoys her participation in the Honor and Disciplinary Councils, something she says is not only important but is a testament to her own growth, maturity, and character. What stands out most to Lucy, though, is the community she has found at Cushing. “I found my family here,” she says, “and it completely changed the trajectory of my life. I gained confidence, and I feel settled in a way I never did before.”

Maria Vicuna ’20 Maria Vicuna knows that Cushing has truly changed her life. While she found it hard to leave her family, Maria found herself at Cushing, continuing to work on her musical talent while also playing sports for the first time. That once-new experience blossomed into the honor of being named a captain of her soccer team this year. Now Maria is looking forward to what lies ahead. She will be the first person in her family to attend college; her parents have always reinforced the importance of education and came to the United States to make a better life for her. She hopes to study education in college and use her degree to set others up for similar opportunities by becoming an elementary school teacher. Maria reflects, “Cushing has expanded my world and my mind, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today if not for this opportunity.”

Ryan Basile ’20 “Cushing has changed me for the better, which would not have happened without the generosity of the Watkins Family Foundation,” Ryan Basile says. “I owe who I am to Cushing and the experiences I’ve had over the last four years.” As a proctor, Ryan is especially aware of the responsibility that such a leadership role requires and the impact it can have. “I remember how much the proctors helped me my freshman year, and I like that I’m able to give back in that way,” he explains. Ryan is also a head tour guide and helps out at admissions events, talking to prospective students and families about his Cushing experience. He was particularly gratified by being asked to give a speech to the student body about the importance of the honor code, something he takes very seriously. Overall, Ryan has enjoyed the opportunity to interact with all different kinds of people in his time here and feels that Cushing has given him “the tools to tackle anything” that may come his way.

Kyra Parris ’20 “Kyra was admitted to some very competitive schools at home, but we are confident she would not have become as well-rounded or would have gained so much ground if she had stayed at home. We would choose Cushing all over again.” These are the words of Kyra Parris’ mother, Kimberly Best-Parris, reflecting on how Cushing has affected Kyra over the last four years. Kyra is certainly well-rounded: she is a proctor; has a lead role in the musical; runs Cushing’s sustainability club; is a head tour guide and regular panelist for Admissions events; and participates actively in the dance program, lending her expertise to choreography for performances. And while Kyra says it was hard to leave her family, she knows it was all worth it. Cushing has become her second home, her larger community. “Community is key,” she says. “It’s larger than your family. I am honored to have had the opportunity to be a part of this community for the last four years.”

Brad is also savvy enough to realize that Chance for Life has become a major networking event for Washington, D.C. power brokers, and he describes how the room is filled with heavy hitters from the political and business arenas. The format of the daytime tournament is particularly ideal for networking purposes, as attendees move throughout the event and never know whom they will sit beside from one moment to the next. Brad credits this revolving format for some of the event’s excitement and appeal.

Over the years Chance for Life has had numerous memorable moments, from singer Robin Thicke’s performance to Terry Bradshaw’s footballs tossed to top donors in the crowd. Brad takes pride in the highlights that emerge at each event and feels a certain pressure to create events filled with quintessential moments that people will “talk about the next day.”

But it’s really other kinds of moments that stand out most in Brad’s memory.

She said the house was in terrible condition, and she did not want to show it to me. I insisted. She was so right; I didn’t know how right until I bought it! The house chose me. I had no inten-tion of ever moving to Costa Rica. It took me two years to fix up the house, enough to where I could open it as a B&B. It was a challenge, and I had a lot of fun doing it. Now it is beautiful, comfortable, and everyone loves it and feels at home. We have a great repeat clientele, and it has been very good to me health-wise also. We have Tai Chi and yoga classes. I have hosted many dinner parties, weddings, organization gatherings, meetings, birthday and holiday fiestas. I still have a lot on my Bucket List...so, Cariari Bed &

Hello Cushingites and especially the classes of 1948, 1949, and 1950. After Cushing and Lois Cann, I went to Ste-phens College in Columbia, Missouri, where I majored in Theater & Dance and minored in Psychology & Philoso-phy. I was accepted to Yale Drama but my family decided I had had enough Theater. They wanted me to settle down and have a family. In those days, you didn’t fight back. That is the biggest regret of my life! Eventually I did marry and had three children but never gave up the theater. I worked in every theater in the Boston area, several off-Broadway shows in New York City, and several on Melrose in Los Angeles; I also worked on a few films. I belonged to all the theatrical unions at age 21. I have done many things throughout my life.

The biggest change was when I came to Costa Rica in 2001 to help my son and his wife, who was pregnant with my fourth grandchild. I kept passing this house that you could see had been a beautiful home but had been left to rot! It had been rented, left 22

1957 Ted Robbins writes, “On October 30, 2019, I shot a 41 for 9 holes at Lochmere Golf & Country Club in Tilton, New Hampshire at the age of 81, nine days short of my 82nd birthday, with 3 pars and 6 bogeys using the Senior set of golf tees. There are many strong lasting memories of being the Captain of the Cushing golf team and my senior year under the guidance of Coach Walter Butler and Nelson McLean. That imprint, for the love of the game of golf, still remains strong! I hope all my classmates are healthy, happy and doing well.”

1958 Robert Curry writes, “I entered Cushing as a thirteen-year-old in 1954. My family had recently moved to Boston, and I had to leave a small grammar school in Kennebunkport, Maine, where, as a member of a thirtytwo student eighth grade class, I was secure. Cushing was new, strange, and overwhelming for the first few months. In the tur-moil of a very homesick young boy, a woman came to be known to me as Miss Lois Cann, teacher of drama and expression at Cushing. She was a fierce presence in many ways: former teacher of Bette Davis ’26, longtime overseer of morning chapel programs, and director of all the school productions. To be in her class, one had to endure constant observation, constructive criticisms, and often a seemingly belligerent attitude. Over time and under her supervision, I, a most introspective and quiet kid, came to learn about theater, public speaking, musical perfor-mance, and most importantly, self-esteem. Reading scripture, taking the lead in The Mikado, playing Mr. Scrooge, and preparing stories for unrehearsed telling in class was a marvelous experience. Coupled with her strong influence was a kindness and respect that I carry with me even today. Miss Cann enabled me to become, after four years at Cushing and then college and seminary, a minister, a preacher, and a human being with a joy of language, theater, and the art of caring. Now in my eightieth year, I remember the transforming presence of Miss Cann and her love of teaching young men and women.”

Noble Sissle (1899-1975), an internationally renowned lyricist,

Along with founder James Reese Europe, my dad Noble Sissle helped to create the band, but not in the normal military marching band style. Based in Harlem, New York City, this band’s mission was to create the “best damn band” in Uncle Sam’s Army. They recruited top New York musicians and even went to Puerto Rico and signed up some of the island’s best musicians.

the French audience a moment to recognize “La Marseillaise.” Thus, Jazz was introduced to the European continent. When French leaders saw how their citizens reacted to this form of music, they insisted that the band go on tour to help build morale.

In the meantime, the fighting men of the 369th Regiment were not allowed to fight alongside white American soldiers, so the French asked if they could be attached to their units. Permission was granted and the Hellfighters spent 191 continuous days on the front, more than any other American unit. They were bestowed more honors by the French than any other U.S. unit. It took 97 years after his heroism for Private Henry Johnson of the 369th to get a Medal of Honor bestowed posthumously by President Barack Obama in 2015.

In that same year, we began to create the 369th Experience Band with a goal of educating U.S. citizens of the contributions of the original band and the fighting men. By 2017 we secured funding and eventually recruited 42 African American musicians who played in marching bands at 10 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in nine states.

Auditions were conducted with the use of cellphone videos from the prospects, who submitted a variety of musical requirements. The students who were selected were some of the best in their college bands.

By the spring of 2018, we secured funding from the U.S. World War One Centennial Commission, which is the national organization that has two primary missions: coordination of the nation’s centennial celebration in 2018 (the fighting ended November 11, 1918); and raising funds to build an official National WWI monument in Washington, D.C. During Fleet Week/Memorial Day in New York City in 2018, the 42 students flew in from 12 different airports, met each other, sat down behind music stands, and in a two-day practice schedule, they mastered a dozen songs made famous by the original Hellfighters Band.

Needless to say, our staff was very impressed, and when we played a concert on the U.S.S. Intrepid Air and Space Museum on the Hudson River, the Commission was extremely pleased.

The 2019 Fleet Week/Memorial Day celebrations in New York were designed to pay homage to the 100th Anniversary of the end of WWI, and why not have our unique band appear! This time the band was invited to lead the 152 Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade, but not before our performance nd

This trip also included two performances at Liberty Park in New Jersey in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty and a great time at the Marcus Garvey Park Band Shell in Harlem.

Our last planned trip hopefully will take place in France in 2020 to retrace the movement of the original band on their historic 12-month “visit” to the continent. When the Hellfighters returned home in February 1919, the homecoming parade up Fifth Avenue and into Harlem was historic. Although the Hellfighters were denied a parade when they departed New York City in December 1917, people are still talking about the parade that greeted them when
