CUSHING TODAY 2
— DR. RANDY R. BERTIN

Dear Cushing Friends,

It is a privilege to write to you as Cushing’s 13th Head of School. Karen and I, along with our four children, are grateful for the warm welcome we have received, and we have been delighted to settle into this very special community on this beautiful campus. Returning to our New England roots has been a wonderful homecoming.

As an educator, I was drawn here because it was clear to me that Cushing exists for students, a fact that is both explicit in our mission statement and lived out daily in the work of our dedicated faculty and staff. We are committed to putting in place everything our students need to succeed – programs, facilities, talented and creative classmates, and the people to guide them in achieving their potential. From my many visits with alumni, families, and friends, I know that Cushing has provided that commitment to generations of students. A Cushing education transforms students’ lives and then ripples widely beyond in their lives as alumni.

I have begun my time at Cushing Academy by listening. I am in the process of meeting with every employee of the school and am also reaching out to alumni, parents of current students, parents of graduates, and current and former trustees. I am asking them about their experiences with Cushing and what they hold as a special part of the school. I am also asking for feedback on potential areas of improvement as we look toward the future. These exchanges, as well as my daily experiences on campus with faculty, staff, and especially students, will help to form my work for many years to come. If we have not spoken, I invite you to a conversation. I look forward to hearing your story and how Cushing has impacted and transformed you.

Among the many sounds of campus life this fall has been the hum of work on ambitious construction projects. At our opening Convocation, I noted that we could have “Growth in Progress” signs all across campus — the Dining Commons, Ash House, and many other areas of construction. The greatest “growth in progress,” however, is at work in each of our students. I asked them to start with the end in mind, thinking about what success will look like for each of us this year. Success for me is progress working toward the goals of our strategic plan while helping to improve our school’s ability to serve our students today and to make Cushing an attractive option for students of the future. I encourage each member of the wider community to think about what you envision for Cushing, and to help us fulfill that vision.

I hope you will visit campus during the coming year. I look forward to all of us working collectively, in community, to turn our goals into our shared future. Thank you for your support of this great school.

Convocation and Installation

During Opening Weekend, on Sunday, September 2, the Cushing community assembled for Convocation and the installation of Dr. Randy R. Bertin as 13th Head of School. Reestablished as an annual tradition in 2013, Convocation now marks the start of each academic year and this year also provided the setting for the celebratory welcome of Dr. Bertin.

With anticipation, students gathered by class outside the Main Building for the procession into the Chapel, with seniors taking pride of place as the last to enter. Associate Director of Admissions Bill Troy then delivered the welcome remarks to new and returning students on behalf of the faculty, in which he encouraged the student body to pursue excellence in their work and their treatment of others, to remain thankful and enthusiastic, and to “be proud to be a Penguin.”

In their reflections, Student Body Co-Presidents Holden Fry ’19 and Jill Stone ’19 advised their peers to take full advantage of their time at Cushing. Encouraging new students to discover what they can achieve, Holden noted, “Cushing Academy is a wonderful environment to try new things, so take advantage of all the opportunities that will come your way.” “We should not settle this year,” said Jill. “At no point should we stop trying to grow.” Both speakers highlighted the ability and the privilege that students have to shape not only their own lives, but the lives of those around them.

Board of Trustees Chair Colette de Labry then formally installed Dr. Bertin as 13th Head of School. Presenting him with the school’s ceremonial medallion, she offered the Board’s charge: “Dr. Bertin, one hundred and fifty-three years after our founding, the Board has unanimously chosen you to continue our founder’s vision and to uphold the mission of the Academy today. The Board of Trustees entrusts Cushing to your leadership.

We look forward to working with you, and we wish you every success as you commit yourself to ensuring that Cushing lives out its mission daily: to exist for students and to develop curious, creative, and confident learners and leaders.”

Before his opening address, Dr. Bertin introduced seven new faculty and staff members: Visual Arts Teacher Linsey Laserte, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid Dan Morrissey, Biology Teacher Christine (DiMauro) Pawlikowski ’06, Latin Teaching Fellow Kelly Platt, Mathematics Teaching Fellow Sarah Swenson, Spanish Teacher Karin Valencia-Bedard, and Director of Athletics Jennifer Viana.

Dr. Bertin thanked the community for its warm welcome to his family. Referring to our mission statement, Dr. Bertin encouraged students, saying, “If you commit to a strong effort in your pursuits at Cushing, I believe you will feel that indeed, Cushing exists for you” and urged them to take advantage of all that is in place for them to succeed. Dr. Bertin concluded, “Let’s be kind, work hard, and have a great school year together as we celebrate the common purpose of our remarkable community.”

After the singing of the Alma Mater, the faculty led the way to Quimby Field for the all-school handshake. The community then gathered together for the first formal dinner of the year in the newly renovated FisherWatkins Dining Commons.

Fisher-Watkins Dining Commons and Ashburnham House Renovation

Cushing’s comprehensive plan for facilities renewal continues to transform our campus and provide the very best in our student-centered culture. Following the addition of the Watkins Field House, Lee House and Sanborn House, a new turf field, and improvements to Iorio Arena over the past three years, the big reveal of 2018 was the overhaul and expansion of the Fisher-Watkins Dining Commons and the renovation and reconfiguration of the adjacent Ashburnham House, our largest boys’ dormitory.

Joining the complete renovation of the existing dining facility is a 15,000 square-foot addition, which features a state-of-the art kitchen and servery. Remodeled from the ground up, Ashburnham House includes 24 reconfigured double-occupancy rooms, two new bathrooms, new stairways, an elevator, renovated community room, and three remodeled faculty apartments. The connector between the dining facility and Ash House includes three new classroom spaces and a stairway leading to the lower level, which, at the time of this printing, is under construction and will include a remodeled student activity area, cyber lounge, mailroom, and campus store. The complex has received walkways leading to a patio area with landscaping and seating, creating another communal space.

Cushing’s Student Body Co-Presidents

Jill Stone ’19 and Holden Fry ’19 are Cushing’s Student Body Co-Presidents. Each is an advocate for the other, as well as the entire student body. The duality of their leadership status lends itself to greater support and opportunities for collaboration. In addition to being Co-Presidents, Jill and Holden both serve as tour guides, assist the Student Weekend Activities Team and the Student/ Faculty Senate, are seasoned Varsity athletes, and have been involved with the performing arts at Cushing.

How did the two get to where they are today?

Jill, the eldest child of longtime faculty members Beth and Dave Stone, grew up on campus. Over the years, she has called Alumni, Cooke, Sawyer, and Lane House her home. With countless Cushing students to look up to, Jill always imagined becoming a Penguin herself.

For Holden, the path to Cushing was inspired by the experience of his older brother Ashton ’17. “When he came back from breaks, I slowly started realizing a change in him. His whole mentality of life itself was changed. He was happier, more mature from living on his own, and he saw things differently.”

Although they were highly enthusiastic about joining the community from their respective public schools, the pair soon found that a successful transition to Cushing required significant personal investment in their own experience and for them to take chances, all while staying true to themselves. Along with new and challenging coursework, Jill had to balance her lifelong passion for dance and soccer. Thanks to guidance from her teacher Mrs. Harmon, Jill found that being busy not only gave her structure and accountability for her work, it allowed her to meet new friends. As a day student, Jill made a conscious effort to immerse herself in campus life. “I would always be somewhere on campus, in a common room, the student center, or outside. Every year I tried to meet new people and put myself in a position where I could do just that,” she said.

As a boarding student far from his hometown, Holden found dorm life initially difficult. Like Jill, Holden looked to members of the Cushing community for support. With the help of his upperclassmen friends Andrew Charman ’17, Matt McGrath ’18, and Michael Outzen ’18, Holden learned to branch out socially; he met some of his closest companions, and living on

campus became fun and rewarding. When it came time to run for Student Body Co-President, Holden decided to give back to the school that gave him so much. “I wanted to leave an impact on Cushing, to make the most of my graduating class’ senior year, and to leave a good influence on the underclassmen. I wanted to be in a role where all of that was possible,” he said.

Over the course of three and a half years, Cushing has allowed the pair to push their limits and, as a result, thrive. With half of their senior year nearly over, the Co-Presidents plan to continue living their Cushing experience to the fullest so that others may do the same.

ADVICE FOR NEW PENGUINS

“Take responsibility for your own work. Branch out and don’t be scared to make what you want of your Cushing experience because you have a lot of control over your time here.” - Jill

“Never get discouraged. Always try new things. Cushing’s community is the most supportive I’ve ever been in and you have the ability to do whatever you want. I say just be yourself.”Holden

Mountain Day

Although weather caused us to postpone Mountain Day (twice!) in late September, it didn’t stop Penguins from making the trip to nearby Mt. Monadnock on October 16 to celebrate one of Cushing’s oldest traditions.

While the day proved to be a bit chilly and windy, the sun was shining, the sky was a perfect blue, and the views were awash with New England’s beautiful fall colors. As always, it was a welcome break from classes and a wonderful sight to see the majority of our community reach the summit of this famed New England peak.

Cushing’s Mountain Day tradition began under Dr. Hervey Cowell, who served as headmaster from 1887-1926 and enjoyed scenic fall hikes in the nearby mountains. The annual climb was formally dedicated in Dr. Cowell’s honor by his successor, Principal James Vose, and Monadnock became the chosen destination in 1926. Mountain Day has been celebrated nearly every year since.

Meet Jennifer Viana

After leading the athletic department at Lesley University for seven years along with coaching softball and serving as an administrator there for a total of 19 years, Jennifer (Jen) Viana joined the Cushing community as our new Director of Athletics on July 1, 2018. In addition to proving herself a results-oriented athletic administrator, Jen has earned a well-deserved reputation as a record-setting athlete and as an internationally renowned coach. In addition to her experiences and accolades, she brings to Cushing a tremendous passion for sports and supporting the student-athlete experience.

WHY CUSHING

“I was looking to get into the high school athletics world – specifically at a boarding school since I was coming from a residential college environment – and it was really important for me to know that the school was supportive of athletics. I found exactly that at Cushing. Everyone – from Dr. Bertin, to the faculty, staff, parents, and students – is proud to be here. They, along with Cushing’s alumni, are very proud of the school’s athletics program and of carrying on a great tradition of success. Additionally, I wanted to find a place where I could be involved with and have an impact on student development. Cushing presented all that and so much more.”

A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

“Cushing has a deep history of excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts, and I am humbled to help lead the program with the same expectations. I have some big shoes to fill after the many decades and commitment by those before me, but I am excited to see how we can continue that legacy and elevate the program in the coming years and well into the future.”

FIRST IMPRESSIONS; FIRST SEASON

“Right away, I was welcomed into the community. We have remarkable facilities here that continue to improve and enhance the Cushing experience. As we headed into the fall season, I loved getting to know the players and coaches and seeing their level of commitment to their teams and the school itself. Whether competing at home or away, they’re all wonderful representatives of CA. They are resilient, hard-working, and they aim to be better the next day. All of that can be seen in this year’s Varsity Field Hockey team. Our coaches turned the program around in a short amount of time and with our returners and a number of new players on the roster, they made it to the first round of post-season play for the first time in five years. It will be exciting to see how some of those multi-sport athletes, along with a strong recruiting class in girls’ hockey, for example, will maintain that momentum.”

ON NEW INITIATIVES

“One of the fall’s highlights for me was the launch of the Special Olympics Young Athletes program. [See next page.] The excitement and care that our students brought to the sixweek program went beyond my expectations. The hope is to offer the program again in the spring. It benefits not only the young participants and their families but also the members of our community.”

Jen has demonstrated a strong work ethic and commitment to excellence, and she sets goals for high achievement among her students, both on and off the playing fields. Please join us in welcoming her to Penguin Nation!

Penguins Partner with Special Olympics Young Athletes

As our traditional fall athletic season began, one new team made its debut. On Sunday, September 30, the Cushing community welcomed children ages 2-7 with and without intellectual disabilities to play and learn together through the Special Olympics Young Athletes program. The six-week inclusive play initiative provided a guided experience with activities designed to strengthen motor skills, enhance social and emotional learning opportunities, and provide lots of fun.

Twenty Cushing students volunteered to lead the inaugural event by running activity stations and sharing the joy of sports, foundational skills, and learning with attendees. The first session was a huge success and the number of enthusiastic Cushing volunteers increased exponentially.

“I was originally looking for leadership and community service opportunities for our students because I believe in giving back,” said Jen Viana, Director of Athletics. As the program unfolded, however, it became clear it would result in much more. “It was simply awesome to watch. Our student volunteers wanted to be there and contribute. Some found a special connection with a certain child; others enjoyed adapting activities to best suit participants’ abilities. For others, this was a way to step out of their comfort zone and assume a leadership role. I knew this would be a growth opportunity for our students, but I feel that for some, it could be life-changing.”

We hope to offer the program again in the spring. Watch our website for details!

“We taught the kids how to do many physical and athletic skills but the main goal for everyone was to treat one another with kindness. At the end of each session, I loved seeing not only our guests but also the Cushing volunteers leave with smiles on their faces.”

“It was really heartwarming to see how people with and without disabilities can have so much in common and are able to play together and have fun.”

“I loved seeing how happy the kids were and how everyday life is precious. I hope they left knowing how the Cushing community is very respectful to everyone no matter where they are from or who they are.”

“I volunteered for the Special Olympics because I have always loved helping out kids with Down syndrome and all different disabilities. I hope the program reminded people that everyone can be a good person and can treat others the same.”

Cushing’s New Treblemakers

Twelve pairs of shoes lined up neatly in an arc around three tall, cylindrical microphones designed to pick up sound from multiple angles in a wide breadth of space. Twelve sets of eyes flickered back and forth among the crowd before settling on me as notes vibrated between their ears. I nodded at our soloist; her lips turned upward as she cupped her hands behind her back. Twelve sets of lungs took in breath as one group took new life.

The journey that led to the formation of Cushing’s first a cappella group began almost two years ago, though it was long in the making. I met with Desh Hindle during my interview process in the spring of 2017 to discuss the possibility of starting an a cappella group on campus. Several attempts had been made over the years by students and faculty to establish a group, but none had managed to grab enough traction to get off the ground. The commitment, after all, is substantial - music needs to be arranged and students need to be regularly assembled in the crevices of free time that exist between athletic practices, dinner, and study hall. Despite this, having organized and participated in two groups prior to my time at Cushing (the Octet at St. Mark’s School in Southborough, MA and the Tar Heel Voices at

UNC-Chapel Hill), I was confident that if the students were passionate about the group, we could bring thought to reality.

And passionate they were. We began meeting in the late winter of 2018 and quickly identified our goal for the year: performing at the end-of-the-year Awards Ceremony. While juggling athletic, theatrical, and extracurricular activities, the original 12, as they are fondly known, worked tirelessly to meet weekly - and occasionally twice a week - to learn and rehearse new music. Their hard work paid off, and, as Brianna Coppinger ’19 notes, they were able to “have fun while focusing on improving our performances and singing together.” As anyone who has worked in performing arts can attest, it is a rare and wonderful occurrence to work with a group that blends together so perfectly in not only tone, but also mindset, enthusiasm, and dedication.

These same qualities have extended into our work this year - we have found a more permanent meeting time, set our sights on a number of exciting new songs, and are hoping to expand our performance opportunities both at Cushing and within the greater independent school and local communities. While our horizons are expanding, our core remains unchanged; we are a diverse representation of our student body who share a singular pursuit in creating our own euphonic corner of the sky. As Fan Chu ’19 reflects, “this group embraces everyone; we are like family.” In essence, this is what makes a cappella so remarkable: the blending of different persons, lived experiences, and voices into one harmonious being that is beautiful because of its differences, not in spite of those differences.

A cappella has given me a home time and time again. I think of my own a cappella families, of weddings, births, and reunions, when I look at the sixteen young faces in front of me each week at rehearsal; what we are making here is so much more than music.

For a behind-the-scenes look at the painting’s creation, watch this 4 Quarters with the Denver Broncos documentary.

Commissioned by the Denver Broncos to serve as a one-of-a-kind tribute to NFL legend Peyton Manning, Will’s recent work, Omaha, captures the intensity of Manning’s famous battle cry at the line of scrimmage. Both an athlete and an artist at Cushing, Will Day ’89 could not have foreseen the particular convergence of the two in this project.

The origins of Omaha began with a lucky conversation at Boulder’s Black Lab Sports, a unique business incubator that stresses connections between business, art, fitness, and technology. There, Will met Mac Freeman, the Chief Commercial Officer for the Broncos organization, and that chance meeting led to this opportunity. “At Cushing, we were taught that art and creativity transcend all kinds of lifestyles. As both an artist and a football fan, this project was so exciting.”

It was evident from the beginning that Omaha was not going to be a traditional portrait and that the result would be a true collaboration. Will felt an easy connection with Manning, as they met at the locker room and in the stadium, where Manning spoke about his emotions at the most intense game moments. Will wanted to express what it might be like to be in Manning’s shoes — to be at the epicenter of the “controlled chaos” as Manning described it. What did it feel to be in that locker room? On the field with the crowd roaring and everyone’s focus on you?

Omaha

Will enjoyed his interactions with Manning and felt it especially important to listen and learn. Manning’s excitement translated into the color and energy Will put on the canvas. “The goal was to give the fans a timeless moment. I chose intensity, the movement, the crowd engaged.”

He was also struck by Manning’s willingness to take a risk and apply the first stroke of paint on the canvas. Risk is something that Will expresses a healthy respect for, as he does

greatest football players of all time, was risky. “The project could have gone wrong, but part of the theme here was taking risks, and he (Manning) did so.” The result, Omaha, is permanently on display at Mile High Stadium. Both Manning and his father have prints in their homes, as well.

At Cushing, Will found that he wasn’t pigeonholed as a student, an athlete, or as an artist, and he praises Cushing for providing opportunities for students to step out of their comfort zones to pursue new avenues. Reflecting those values, Will took what he describes as “the scenic route” to his career as an artist, following work in finance and architecture. Will says that the Academy also reinforced the work ethic that he grew up with, when he was taught by his father to “be grateful for work, to respect work, whatever you are doing, whether you are the janitor, or the teacher”- or an artist.

for a little fear, as well. Encountering fear and risk in the creative process is a state he remembers feeling acutely during his Cushing days. Largely considered a contemporary abstract expressionist, he acknowledged that the project, memorializing one of the

1977

Chuck Johanningsmeier writes, “Still living the good life out here in Nebraska! Our two oldest (Emma and Grace) have now left the nest but we still have our youngest, Andrew, with us. For the past few years I held (sat in?!) the Wardle Chair of the College of Arts & Sciences, awarded for outstanding teaching and research, and now I’ve been named to a university-wide Isaacson Chair for outstanding research in my field (American literature, with an emphasis on understanding historical readers). Just checked out the photos of Mountain Day 2018, and boy, did those bring back good memories!”

1978

Robin Lockwood Hall writes, “Hello, old friends! My family and I are enjoying life in Southeastern Connecticut. I have settled into an enjoyable career with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services New England Properties, a realtor in Mystic, Connecticut. It’s been VERY rewarding for me that our son John attended Cushing for three years, graduating in 2016. John’s three years at Cushing proved to be as AWESOME, full of special dorm parents, coaches and teachers — not to mention friends and roommates — as I experienced during my two years at Cushing. I am currently serving on two Cushing commissions helping to locate and get more alumni involvement — the backbone of the success of Cushing! I LOOK FORWARD TO GOING ‘BACK IN TIME’ WITH YOU ALL THIS JUNE FOR OUR 40TH AllSCHOOL REUNION!!!!”

1983

Sandra Sullivan writes, “Had a nice visit in Gloucester with Kim White Sousa ’75 who was a faculty member when I was at Cushing. My husband Tom and I had a great ride on Kim and her husband Philip’s boat. She didn’t even make me call her Miss White!!! Thanks Kimmy for being such a great friend from day one.

Looking forward to the NYC alumni event on December 3 and Reunion in June. Hope we can get many from class of 1983 to attend! See you all soon!”

1985

Brett Torrey writes, “I am in the midst of my fourth year at Cushing as Director of Alumni and Parent Relations and I am really loving the experience. Our older son Matt graduated from the University of New Hampshire last May and is now gainfully employed in Boston. Our younger son (and special boy) Kyle is a senior at Oakmont Regional High School here in Ashburnham. Being back on campus and working with classmate Bruce Lemieux and his wife Karen is something I cherish daily. My wish for our class is to continue to lead the way above all other classes regarding engagement with Cushing. Last Reunion we had 41 member of the Class of ’85 show up (a record for any class, by the way), which was awesome and I would love to see us shoot for 50 or more in 2020 for our 35th. I would also love to have all of the 85-ers consider a gift of some amount to the Annual Fund this year and try to raise our participation from the mid-twenties to 50% or more. Even a gift of $19.85 (or more) makes a difference. Thanks to all who have been consistent with supporting CA in recent years. Please come back this June for Reunion, or any time that you are in the area. Thanks, everyone! I am proud to be a member of this wonderful class.”

1990

Sonya (Muller) May stopped by to check in with fellow Penguins and to see the latest developments on campus. Sonya is pictured here with classmate Heather Hill and their math teacher (from 30 years ago!!!) Mark Burke.

1995

Lindsay Haigh writes, “Hello, all! Just wanted to give a quick update to my fellow Penguins about where I am and what I have been up to. I live in Atlanta, Georgia and just celebrated my first year of marriage to my beautiful wife Stephanie. We have four great four-legged children (Gizmo, Buddy, Charlie, and the newest addition Fenway). I had an amazing opportunity earlier in the year where I got to step away from my law practice for a time and follow my love of cooking by appearing on Season 9 of MasterChef on Fox. Although I am now back to practicing law full-time, through my MasterChef experience, I have now teamed up with EatWith.com and am hosting various culinary events. This year has been a blast and I am looking forward to continuing to build on my culinary dreams!”

Medeia Cohan-Petrolino writes, “I live in Glasgow, Scotland now with my husband, young son, and our insane dog. In addition to my day job running the Creative Entrepreneurs Club here, I also moonlight as a children’s author, having had my first book, Hats of Faith, published this past year in the UK and Europe, and now out in the US and Australia. I’m now focused on running school workshops across the UK introducing young school children to the shared custom of faith-based head-covering and religious tolerance.”

“My name is Jay Pratt and I was a PG and a captain of the basketball team. I saw a Facebook post in regard to updating Class Notes for the magazine, so I figured that I would give you an update on my life.

I am the President of Life Solutions Group located in Danvers, Massachusetts. We are an independent financial planning and benefits firm, founded in 2010. Our purpose is to help individuals, families, and business owners create, protect, and accumulate their wealth so they can fully realize all life’s possibilities. We have a strong presence in the Boston area but do work across all of New England. We currently have a team of 15 experienced agents who share our passion for helping educate our clients and making sure that they are protected in all stages of life. Here is a link to a recent article that I was featured in. This will give you a lot more detail on my entire story. If you need any more info, please feel free to contact me. Our website is www.lsgadvisors.com. Have a wonderful day.”

2005

Michael Golze earned his Master’s in College Student Development and Administration from Shepherd University in West Virginia in 2015. After working at Shepherd for a couple years as a Student Center Assistant Director, he began a new position as the Summer Programs and Events Manager at Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore this past February.

2010-2011

Penguin Pride soared with a large Cushing contingent at the wedding of Conor Sheary ’10 and Jordan Sullivan ’11 in August (pictured on right). Please join us in congratulating the Shearys and be sure to watch for Conor (twotime Stanley Cup winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins) and his new team, the Buffalo Sabres.

2012

“My name is Emilie Winter and as a proud Penguin, I would like to share some exciting news in my life that took place this year. In

2017, I wrote, acted, and produced a short film called (Un)knownEncounters (original title: Encontros(Des)Conhecidos) that was shot in my hometown of Curitiba, Brazil.

This film has been included in the official selection of several international film festivals throughout the country, including: South Texas International Film Festival, Glendale International Film Festival, Official Latino Short Film Festival, and Latino Film Market. Here is the film poster, as well as the film preview.”

2015

Vincent Grimaldi writes, “This past March I had the opportunity to present a research poster that was published in London, England. A small research team and I had been working on a year-long project that studies how college athletes can use information and communication technologies to better prepare themselves for a future beyond the field. We submitted our preliminary findings to the iConference, a well-known academic conference in the information science field.

We were elated to find out they had accepted our research and would fund our trip there to present the results. As you can imagine, it was a fulfilling experience, which constantly reminded me of how thankful I am to have grown up with passionate mentorship.”

2017

Andrew Charman writes, “I’m in my sophomore year at Hamilton College, where I’m currently creating a major that combines elements of studio art, art history, and mechanical physics (with a bit of computer science and environmental studies) to resemble architectural engineering. I’m also volunteering in Clinton teaching Spanish to elementary school students, while I fill out applications to study abroad in Madrid next fall (shout-out to Sr. Sheehan).

2018

Cami Burke writes, “Cushing!!! I am a freshman at the University of Colorado Boulder and graduated from dear old Cushing in 2018. I’m a psych major and the captain of a broomball team. I love being out here hanging in the mountains, skiing, and hammocking. I miss Cushing and all the people there, especially during the fall. Taking photos during fall football games was my favorite activity. I can’t wait to come back and visit :)”

Emily Roller had the chance to hang out with Gino Bastone when she visited U Utah during the National Conference for College Counseling. She also got to see the opening night for Gino’s hockey season (and collegiate career!). Go Utes!

I’m in week five of the rugby season and our team is currently sitting at second in the league at 3-0-1. We’ve got two more games and then playoffs! I play on the wing, so basically, I just wait for the ball to get to me and then I try and score. It’s all of the glory with minimal effort– the ideal sports position.

I hope things are going well on campus; fall was always my favorite time of the year.”

Michael Outzen writes, “What’s up Cushing! I am a graduate of 2018 and am now playing junior hockey for the New Jersey Titans. It’s a blast playing the sport that I love every day. I’m also involved in an anti-bullying group that goes to elementary schools every week to do presentations and stay connected to the community. I miss CA and look forward to coming back, seeing everyone, and catching some hockey games. Roll Pens, baby!”

2017-2018 Annual Report

Dear Cushing Alumni, Families, and Friends,

On behalf of everyone at Cushing, thank you for your most generous support of the Academy during the recent fiscal year (July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018). Your gifts made a tremendous difference, enriching the experience and education of each student, and enhancing the foundation for Cushing’s continued strength.

Your gifts to the Cushing Academy Annual Fund touch every aspect of our work with students as we live out our mission daily, to exist for students and to develop curious, creative and confident learners and leaders. From faculty salaries, team uniforms and theatre costumes, to financial aid, extra-curricular activities and the library, the Annual Fund supports everything we do.

Many of you also gave to areas of interest – investing in our endowment for the long-term future of the Academy, supporting a team or activity, or underwriting a particular need.

Please accept our deep gratitude for your commitment. Along with the listing of all our contributors, this report includes information about our fundraising this year and an overview of the Academy’s revenues and expenses. We pledge to steward your gifts wisely, so that your generosity has the greatest possible impact as we educate today’s Penguins and prepare for future generations.

Warm regards,

6th Annual Golf Tournament Brings Cushing Supporters Together on Cape Cod

On Monday, June 25, 2018, nearly 100 golfers came to The Ridge Club in Sandwich, Mass., to have some fun on the links while supporting the Cushing Academy Annual Fund and Cushing’s hockey programs. Joining many alumni, parents and friends were Buffalo Sabre Conor Sheary ’10, Coach Mike Sullivan of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panther Keith Yandle ’05, and 2018 Olympian Broc Little ’07. This year’s tournament raised nearly $100,000, bringing the total over six years to almost $280,000. Over the years, the funds raised by the tournament have supported the construction of the Watkins Field House, the boys’ and girls’ hockey programs, and the Cushing Academy Annual Fund.

The success of the tournament has been a team effort. George Sullivan P ’11 has been the tournament’s title sponsor for several years. He has been joined by Mark Warsofsky P ’07 and ’09

and M&M Transport, Windover Construction, Tony Mallozzi ’01 and Anthony Joseph Real Estate, and TD Bank. This year, Interstate Electrical, Golden Cannoli, CSL Consulting, Mike Nadler ‘06, Jordan Sullivan ’11 and Conor Sheary ’10, Stacy Silverman ’04, and Fitchburg State University and President Richard S. Lapidus joined in sponsoring the tournament.

In addition, several alumni, friends, and parents sponsored holes, including Jim Kraskouskas ’65, Michael and Nicola Mahoney P’21 and Mahoney’s Garden Center, and Brian Teixeira ’99.

We are grateful for the generosity of our donors and their ongoing support of the Academy and its students through this special day and through all contributions. We hope that you will join us for our next tournament on Monday, June 14, 2019!
