Dear Cushing Friends, As we close out this most unusual semester at Cushing Academy, we can all celebrate the poise with which our students and staff prioritized the health and safety of our community as they navigated their everyday responsibilities. The balancing act of maintaining academic rigor, enjoying the school experience, and adhering to the myriad of mandated guidelines for controlling the virus has shown the strength, fortitude, and incredible heart of Penguin Nation.

It is not so much despite these hardships, but because of them that we tout the successes you will see in the pages of this issue of Cushing Today.

The COVID-19 pandemic engulfed the nation in March, forcing Cushing to undertake new operational changes and regulations to provide a safe educational and physical environment for our community. Many sacrifices, including those made by our families, have been evident on every level of the Academy. We do not take the resilience shown by our students and faculty for granted. In carefully following the guidelines established by our medical team and the Bring the Penguins Home Task Force, we successfully mitigated the spread of the virus on and off-campus. It was through the courage and sacrifices of our students and families that this was possible, and I am incredibly grateful to each of you.

During this year, several events in the US and around the world brought into focus the issues of racism and bigotry. We are committed to doing what is necessary to create a learning and living environment to combat these issues. In this commitment, we have further embraced our mission to truly “exist for students” as we strive to create an anti-racist environment.

These two formidable societal challenges have not diminished our spirits and passion for academic excellence and a healthy Cushing community. As you will see in this issue, we successfully completed a virtual commencement, achieved athletic championships, and performed a spectacular fall play. None of this could have been possible without the mental strength, grit, and stamina of our dedicated students and faculty.

As we look forward to the semester ahead, I am proud to be part of a community that remains dedicated to developing curious, creative, and confident learners and leaders, even in these unsettled times. I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy new year.

Cushing's Response to COVID-19

"For several days preceding September 26, attendance had been dwindling noticeably; some students had Spanish influenza and many more thought they had. Study room was a bedlam of sniffling, sneezes and coughs, and in town like conditions prevailed. The local board of health got together and decreed that all public gatherings should cease, and then came the unheard of spectacle of Cushing closing its doors in the middle of a term.”

The above account from a campus publication had an

unexpected echo 102 years later, when Cushing once again faced

the need to close its doors in the middle of a term. However, this time Cushing’s campus was silent for five months as the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, made its way across the globe.

Cushing’s leadership quickly went on high alert as the virus began, with Head of School Dr. Randy Bertin and the Board of Trustees proactively monitoring the rapidly-changing situation. Dr. Bertin’s first correspondence to parents about the virus, on January 25,

The Academic Office created a new academic schedule encompassing both types of classes to serve students located in time zones worldwide.

Once the spring term was successfully underway, concurrent planning began to prepare for reopening the campus in the fall. In a May 15 email to parents, Dr. Bertin announced the launch of the Bring the Penguins Home Task Force, including subgroups focused on all aspects of school life: academics, student affairs, athletics, facilities, human resources, dining, and admissions. The task force and the Senior Steering Committee—including a physician and an epidemiologist who specialize in infectious diseases—worked tirelessly to understand COVID-19 and use this knowledge to inform decisions regarding necessary operational changes. The team developed an extensive operations manual to guide Cushing’s safe reopening for the 2020-21 school year.

Over the summer, the task force continued its planning work, ensuring alignment with rapidly changing federal, state, and local guidelines. Dr. Bertin shared the comprehensive plan to reopen the campus with families in mid-July.

And then, on March 23, Cushing announced that spring term would take place remotely, thus ending the on-campus experience for the 2019-20 academic year.

Unlike in 1918, technology allowed us, and people around the world, to continue academic instruction and transition to remote operations. Before deciding to conduct the spring term remotely, Dr. Bertin and the Academic Office determined the necessary plans and protocols for ensuring a robust learning experience. The extended spring break allowed faculty to learn how to deliver their classroom teachings via a virtual platform.

While interscholastic competition was not possible, coaches got creative: we enjoyed intrasquad scrimmages (the boys' basketball and baseball teams met on the baseball diamond on two occasions), faculty teams against students, and other ways to keep things fun. In the classrooms, teachers ably employed the new Meeting Owl video technology to bring the classroom to our

distributed remote learners. The Visual and Performing Arts departments modified their programs but still put on a fall play, a photography show, and a dance performance.

Although the end of the pandemic remains out of sight, Dr. Bertin’s vow to parents back in May continues to guide Cushing’s efforts each step of the way: “Underlying our strategy for the return to on-campus learning will be a conviction from our leadership that even a phenomenon as unprecedented as COVID-19 cannot change the essence of who we are as a community. Like most unexpected occurrences, its consequences are still unknown, and the path for addressing and overcoming it will take a strategic and longer-term commitment. Our team is ready to meet this challenge head-on while maintaining the commitment to Cushing Academy’s deeply-rooted mission and the promise we offer to students and families.”

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

This year we saw the rise of racial injustice and inequality move to the forefront of our national consciousness. The Academy is reckoning with what this means for our community now and in the future. We have work ahead of us to be part of the solution, and we are committed to sustaining this work at the Academy for the long-term.

• At our second forum in late September, I spoke to all students and faculty about our institutional commitment to the work of equity and justice, reaffirming Cushing’s commitment to these issues.

I noted that one way to do so is to embrace the concept of being a good upstander rather than a bystander. The concept of speaking up for others and acknowledging harm even when—or perhaps especially when—you are not the one being harmed is now incorporated into our policies about how we treat one another.

2019-2020 Winter Athletics Highlights Varsity Boys’ Basketball began the 2019-2020 season in Toronto, Canada where they participated in the inaugural Naismith Classic. The tournament featured six top American prep schools versus six top Canadian prep schools.

Traveling north of the border was a new experience for the team. However, competing against the best teams from around the country was business as usual for the Penguins. Upon returning from Canada, Cushing began regular season NEPSAC play and recorded a regular season Class AA record of 15-0, won the regular season title, and earned the #1 seed in the New England playoffs.

For the third time in four years, Cushing solidified its place on the national stage, ranking in the top 10 nationally and earning—for the second time in school history (and in the last three years)—an invitation to the National Prep Championship. The team also earned an overall record of 23-7—just one win shy of the most wins in program history.

Cushing’s out-of-league schedule was arguably the most difficult in the country, competing against great teams from Canada, Kansas, New Jersey, Maryland, and New England. Thanks to Cushing’s success and strength of schedule, the Penguins earned invites to some of the top prep showcase events in the country, where hundreds of college coaches travel to recruit the best of the best in high school basketball.

After the 2019-20 season, eight players made the leap to college basketball. Among the eight, three will play at the Division 1 level: Malachi Ndur (Brown University), Isaiah Gray (Cornell University), and Toby Okani (Duquesne University). Dan Braster is planning to play Division II on a full scholarship (New York Institute of Technology). Moving on to play Division III are Sean Okpoebo (Trinity College), Will Campbell (Bard College), Clay Bolster (Colby College), and Coby Gold (Macalester College).

Varsity Girls’ Hockey endured a back and forth series of disappointing losses and hard-fought wins at the outset of their path to success in the 2019-2020 season. With time and tenacity, however, the team achieved a five-game win streak, and eventually earned a sixth-seed placement in the NEPSAC Dorothy Howard Small School Tournament.

Energized and empowered by their growth as a team, the Penguins needed to defeat three opponents to whom they had previously lost to secure championship victory. Two upset wins against #3 seed St. Mark’s (quarterfinals) and #2 seed Brooks (semifinals) granted #6 seed Cushing the chance to face #1 seed Rivers in the final game.

2020 Spring Season at Home and Beyond When Cushing adopted a temporary remote learning model in the spring of 2020, what did this mean for athletics? Thanks to adept thinking from the Athletic Department, Penguins

In early May, our girls’ lacrosse, softball, and tennis teams (and

their coaches) participated in a virtual 5k run/bike fundraiser to

raise money for the One Love Foundation, which educates young people about healthy relationships. This was also a joint effort with the Kimball Union Academy Girls’ Lacrosse team.

Due to the absence of interscholastic competition, teams held intrasquad scrimmages in uniform to keep their skills sharp as ever. The New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) allowed out-ofseason sports to practice and as a result, Penguin fans witnessed a unique array of teams in action this semester including hockey, basketball, softball, baseball, and lacrosse.

We commend our Penguin athletes and coaches on their flexibility, resilience, and dedication to their sports during challenging circumstances. Through it all, Penguin Nation will continue to cheer—Roll Pens!

Visual Arts Highlights Penguin Claims Scholastic Art Awards Last May, Cheng “Cindy” Zeng '21 received three Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for her digital painting, Rust Moonlight. In the first round of the competition, she received a Gold Key award, a regional award given to the best works (out of 18,000 nationwide submissions) submitted to local programs. Cindy was also one of five Massachusetts nominees for an American Visions Award, the highest regional honor that an artist could receive. Ultimately, Cindy was selected for a National Medal—an impressive accomplishment!



Jeannie had begun to think about retirement and had cut her hours to part-time when duty called early in 2020. As it became clear that COVID-19 was coming to all communities, Sanborn returned to her role at Heywood full-time. She counts the coronavirus pandemic as her fourth public health crisis; she also created hospital policies for HIV/AIDS, H1N1, and Ebola.

Things got busy rapidly. “The patients came quickly,” notes Sanborn, and “more just kept coming.” She describes those initial days as “exhausting, challenging and yet inspiring.” Sanborn usually worked seven days a week, averaging 60 or 70 hours, with her husband Wayne driving her to work early in the mornings and picking her up in the evenings. But, she is quick to say that she “never wanted to be anywhere else.”

Sanborn’s admiration for her colleagues at Heywood is clear, and describing the teamwork and camaraderie she experienced still moves her. “We had to rely on each other for everything and work as a well-oiled team. We had to do more with less, and we became very creative in our approaches even when situations were less than ideal.

Jeannie is grateful for the outpouring of support from the greater community, including businesses, schools (including Cushing), and individuals who provided hand-sewn masks, gowns, face shields, and even meals for healthcare workers. She was also incredibly touched by the community’s prayer vigils in the hospital parking lot and the staff’s emotional send-offs when a COVID-19 patient goes home. “The community has been exceptional, and it was truly a gift to work during this pandemic.” She was careful to keep herself as healthy as possible during the height of virus activity, crediting “Coach’s” support, the frequent rounds of takeout

This pandemic has taught us all to work better as a team, to learn and communicate in different ways, and to be creative problem solvers.” Jeannie hopes that Cushing students embrace public health guidelines and stay safe.

Reunion 2020 was one such event altered by the global pandemic. Brian Drourr '91 "I am a fourth-generation photographer now living in Burlington, VT. While at Cushing Academy, between 1988 and 1991, the metalsmithing studio was like a second home to me. It was not until I studied photography at Johnson State College in Vermont that I received my first formal photography training. I finished my undergraduate studies at Prescott College in Arizona studying leadership and psychology. I then returned to Boston to pursue my Master of Social Work at Simmons University. It was not until my move to Vermont a few years later that I really took the deep dive into professional fine art photography over 15 years ago. Since then, I have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers from Arizona Highways to Vermont Life, Patagonia catalogs, and the Burlington Free Press. I have hung in galleries across New England and was in the Boston Globe. I was even featured as NASA's prestigious Astronomy Photographer of the Day once. In the end, however, regardless of accolades and the like, photography is my escape and happy place where the impossible becomes a reality for all to see. I just have a passion for finding light in the darkest of places!"

2010 - PREPARING FOR A FUTURE ON THE FRONT LINE The COVID-19 crisis has strengthened the resolve of many in their chosen calling. One such Penguin, Madeline Lane '10, is in the midst of a rigorous nursing program, and she is more than ready to join that crucial work. We caught up with her late last spring as the pandemic was unfolding.

After studying biology and education at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, Madeline moved to Colorado and became an EMT in a hospital setting. She credits having real-world clinical experience as pivotal in her decision to return to school to study nursing full-time. And yet, it wasn’t just that experience that solidified nursing as the right career for her.

“I’d always been interested in medicine and teaching. Nurses are educators, and so I found my happy medium.” Madeline began a four-year nurse practitioner program at UMass Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts, last fall.

She describes her early experiences with nursing school as invigorating, with long classes, labs, and clinical rotations in various specialties. But in the second week of March, she says, “the world stopped,” a sentiment shared by many. As at schools across the country, her education shifted online, and she found herself “wishing we could be done with school so we could help. I know that going into nursing for me was about caring for others, especially when it is most needed. To not be able to help was hard.”

Madeline has been following media coverage of frontline workers during the coronavirus pandemic. “Nurses face the brunt of

patient care, and when patients are struggling, we are often the first person to come to their aid. Nurses support so many others but haven’t always felt supported. The more we talk about it, the better, and the more it comes to light.” Hearing about nurses and doctors not having enough PPE (personal protective equipment) disturbs Madeline, who would like to see more protections in the future. However, she makes it clear that she has no hesitation about pursuing a career in nursing despite the pandemic and is eager to return to the hospital.

Madeline remembers an emphasis on the concept of service at Cushing, especially on Tony Fisher Day. But it was everyday life at Cushing where she saw service in action in the way that “teachers cared for students and their own families.” She specifically cites the influence of dorm parent Haley Sanborn '02 in Alumni Hall, Bernadette Bibber, and Bill Troy. “The level of nurture and care that Cushing provided was in my service, to make me a better student and person. To be exposed to that every day, it’s hard for that not to sink in.” She sees “supporting kids through such an interesting time in their lives socially and academically as one of the greatest services you can provide.” The support that she received at Cushing makes her ultimately want to teach sexual health to high school and college students someday. “I love working with teenagers and young adults,” Madeline states. “If you can have an impact in those crucial years where kids are navigating their lives, that impact is lifelong. Cushing did that for me.”

Madeline recently shared an update: “I passed my nursing licensure exam in September and began working as a Registered Nurse in October at the Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center in Worcester. I’m still in the same program toward becoming an NP, but I’m getting to work as an RN while I continue with my schooling. It has been very gratifying to finally get involved in patient care during this pandemic.”

illness, Bruce passed away on December 2, 2020, in the comfort of his loving family.

Since childhood, Bruce was a presence in the Cushing community, as his father, Ray Lemieux, served as Cushing's Director of Facilities for more than 25 years. Bruce's connection to Cushing started with him being a child on campus, then working part-time, and eventually attending the Academy as a member of the class of 1985. He attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; after graduation, he joined the Cushing faculty as a football and wrestling coach and a member of the Student

During his dedicated service on the Board of Trustees and beyond, Mr. Chun's efforts and assistance were instrumental in helping former headmaster Joseph R. Curry's work to build Cushing's presence and community in Korea and Hong Kong. Mr. Chun and his wife Katy Chun also graciously hosted many Cushing students in their home.

Affairs Office. He fulfilled many roles throughout his career, most recently as the school's Director of Technology. Devoted to his family, Bruce was also a friend to many. He had a great sense of humor and an unwavering commitment to the institution he always called home.

The loss of Bruce's presence will leave a hole at Cushing and in our hearts, and his passing will impact our students and our entire community in many ways. As our on-campus community knows well, Bruce's wife, Karen, is also a long-time employee working in the school's development office. His daughter Katherine, class of 2015, is a faculty member in our Visual Arts Department. His oldest son, Tim, graduated with the class of 2013, and his youngest son, Kevin, attended Cushing for his freshman year. Bruce's deep Penguin roots are also shared with brothers Steve Lemieux ’77 and Andy Lemieux, a former faculty member; nephew Matt Lemieux '01; and brother-in-law Brett Torrey ’85, Director of Alumni and Parent Relations.

As our entire community mourns this sad news, we will keep Bruce and his family in our thoughts and prayers and offer our support for months to come. Bruce was a loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle, friend, and colleague. He will be greatly missed.

Thomas Parkman Cushing created his legacy when he founded Cushing Academy over one hundred and fifty years ago.

Through his Last Will and Testament, he expressed his desire to establish a school for “rising and future generations,” and his story lives on in the generations of students that followed, their lives transformed by their education at Cushing.
