Looking back now, Bari describes her personal growth since coming to the Academy as “exponential.” Naturally, boarding school was a significant adjustment at first. Exploring new opportunities became easier after a friend invited Bari to the Open Doors club, which focuses on issues relating to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

“This was a space where I could be myself,” Bari explained, “and I branched out from there.” By senior year, Bari was president of Open Doors, and was also a member of the Black Student Union and other clubs. “I’ve learned a lot about myself and have a strong interest in social justice,” she said. “I find

What a difference a year makes!

In April 2020—during the early days of the pandemic—Tony Fisher Day, Cushing’s annual celebration of volunteerism, looked radically different. The student community was entirely remote and engaged in service projects independently in their hometowns or virtually.

Students could be found working hard to clean up the campus and surrounding locations. Despite unusually blustery weather, including some spring snow flurries, students banded together to give their time and energy in support of one of Cushing’s most revered traditions.

Since 2005, Tony Fisher Day of Service to Others, named in honor of late alumnus, trustee, and well-known philanthropist M. Anthony Fisher ’69, is a time for Cushing to send students out into surrounding communities and across Massachusetts — and sometimes beyond — to make a difference. While this year’s opportunities, including cleaning up campus locations, a local Little League field and playground, and many other projects, were closer to home, Penguins put heart, soul, and often a little elbow grease into their assigned duties.

Recognizing that many Cushing students were still off campus due to pandemic restrictions, an innovative virtual service program allowed students on campus to be joined by their remote counterparts all over the world as they tackled the challenges of climate change through a collaboration with MIT’s Spark Learning series.

Welcome New Faces GREG POLLARD Director of Advancement

An 18-year veteran in advancement and

Academy as the new director of advancement.

Greg comes to Cushing from Babson College, where he was the senior associate director of development. He has extensive experience in independent schools, including as director of advancement at Kimball Union Academy in

New Hampshire and the Ransom Everglades School in Florida.

“I am pleased to welcome Greg to Cushing, and I know he will take the Academy’s development efforts to new levels, which will increase the impact we make on our students’ learning and lives,” said Head of School Randy Bertin.

The Restaurateur

Philip Raskin '76

Philip Raskin ’76 came to the food industry as more of a businessman than a “foodie.” Having some exposure to restaurants by selling them equipment, he decided to take a risk: When a spot opened up in Philip’s neighborhood, he negotiated a lease with the landlord over a cup of coffee. So began Philip’s career as a restaurateur, during the height of which he had three flourishing eateries amidst the competitive culinary scene of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Philip is the first to admit that success did not come immediately — an early concept that tried to introduce cheesesteaks to a West Coast palate did not take off. Time and perseverance were key to finding a winning formula, and Philip discovered inspiration from a restaurant he admired in a neighboring community. “Why reinvent the wheel?”

Philip describes the restaurant business as exciting because it is full of ups and downs, even for established proprietors.

Now retired and living in Arizona, Philip observes that the restaurant world remains challenging today: “It’s a labor-intensive industry, and human resource and staffing issues can be time consuming and stressful.” Philip also recalls “empowering people,” especially at the management level, as one of the most satisfying aspects of his restaurant career. Celebrities such as Will Ferrell were guests at BarLago,and Philip fondly remembers a night when actors Don Johnson and Cheech Marin closed the restaurant down after filming the television series Nash Bridges nearby.

Philip credits his Cushing experience for nudging him to grow up quickly as a student. Initially a reluctant boarder, Philip came to greatly appreciate the campus, his friends, and teachers. In particular, he cites the influence of former Head of School Dr. Joseph R. Curry. “I didn’t quite realize it at the time, but as well as being a head of school, Dr. Curry was a businessman, and all that goes with that.” Years later, a visit to Oakland, California by Dr. Curry proved to be prophetic. Looking around Philip’s first restaurant over a lunch visit, the lifelong mentor told him, “I think you are going to end up running more than one of these.”

WITH HASSAN S. ROBINSON '91

Hassan S. Robinson ’91 is principal of Highland

Elementary School in Manchester, Connecticut.

Previously he served as the assistant principal

at Bennet Academy in Manchester and taught at O’Connell Elementary School in East Hartford.

Hassan has also taught at East Hartford High School, Sunset Ridge School, and O'Brien Elementary School — all in the East Hartford School District. He began his teaching career in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Robinson also played minor-league baseball with

the Houston Astros for five years after getting his undergraduate degree. Hassan and his wife, Julie, have three children.

What are the other challenges as a principal?

The other challenge is our commitment to making

diversity, equity, and inclusion part of the curriculum.

We realized we needed to understand the kids in front of us. This has been something we have been challenging ourselves with for about seven years, from the books on the shelves to how we talk about race in the classroom.

Our read-aloud books are hugely important. We feature titles such as The King of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes to make sure our students—roughly 60% are students of color—see themselves. That work has to begin at the elementary school level.

Are there any takeaways from COVID, Lessons learned?

The struggles and triumphs of educators seemed especially highlighted in the pandemic era. How are teachers at your school holding up?

Teachers are perfectionists, and I tried to tell them

that it was okay for once not to be. I would say, “This year we go with the flow.” I wanted to stay calm and lead by example. I would remind them that this is an unusual time and to be mindful of that when they start being too hard on themselves. But, yes, it was a roller coaster!

Sometimes we might hear, at the end of the school year, that teachers can’t wait for summer vacation. This year, I heard more often, “I want to get back to the classroom.”

Our teachers came back to stickers on the floor and desk shields—a different world.

We were fortunate to have a strong and innovative superintendent who centralized decisions in a way that made the path clear for teachers and administrators, and less politicized. We are a large district, roughly 7,000 students [2,000 would stay remote]. My school was fullyin person last November—220 in school and roughly 100 students who chose to stay remote.

Our students are so resilient. Our kindergarteners who began last year had not known something different than a mask and a desk shield, but they did so well.

What would you say to current Cushing students who are considering a career in education?

Go into the career for the right reasons: 1. For the

students, to develop them for the future. 2. For their families, to be an advocate and support for them as well. 3. As corny as it sounds, to build the future. These students are the future.

Who were the teachers at Cushing who made a difference for you?

The Wennings — Marcy and Bill Wenning were

like second parents to me. The day I was drafted (by the Houston Astros) in 1994, I actually wanted to go be somewhere I felt comfortable, so I drove to Cushing and to the Wennings. When the call came it was at their house!

Wayne Sanborn, who was Dean of Students at the time, was a mentor to students of color. Coach Wayne Hancock, Coach Rich Devin, and Coach Bret Torrey. All these amazing mentors. I always say that my year at CA was the year I grew from a boy to a man. It was my first experience on my own—and I had the support system to succeed.

Why Springfield College?

It was this huge family tree that led me to Cushing and to

Springfield from the Hefeles (Hassan lived with Steve G’84 and Lynn Hefele at his high school), to the Wennings [Bill Wenning G’85 Springfield College] to the “Waynes’ [Wayne Hancock ’75 and Wayne Sanborn ’72]. They provided me with a blueprint. They all had connections to Springfield College!

I am currently involved with diversity, equity, and inclusion as part of a subcommittee of the alumni council of Springfield College. Our goal is to figure out how to better support our current Springfield students of color, and to create a mentoring program for alumni of color when they graduate. Our goal is to bring alumni of color back and to support them.

Do your students know about your baseball career? Is it something you downplay or highlight?

For many student-athletes, playing professional baseball is the dream and you got to live it. What do you think people would be most surprised to learn about your experience?

That it’s a daily grind, a job, and a lot of pressure. Don’t get me

wrong— it was amazing and I’m so grateful for the experience—but it’s a day-to-day job and a lot of work.

What advice would you give Cushing students who will be playing at the college level?

Enjoy it! Cherish the experience because it goes by so fast and

is over soon. Enjoy the friendships, especially because they are so precious. Just appreciate the experience. So few athletes will go professional after college. And have a priority list—take one day at a time. It’s a privilege to be a college athlete.

Final thoughts on Cushing?

Cushing was a turning point for me. Cushing saved me. I had

the support system, so I knew I could not fail. I was able to succeed academically in a way I hadn’t before. That one year meant so much to me and had such a great impact. I still keep in touch with friends—I talk to Stratos Costalas ’92 all the time!

I don’t really bring it up. Sometimes the parents might and I’m

always happy to talk. In the end it’s more important to me to be known as the principal.

Wayne Hancock began his distinguished Cushing career of 38 years in 1977. A Gardner native, Wayne was hired to teach history and coach baseball. Until his retirement in 2015, he shared those dual passions, shaping the lives of his students and earning honors as a Teacher of the Year and as a member of the Massachusetts High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. His players won eight Central New England Prep School Championships, and in 2018, the Wayne Hancock Baseball Diamond was dedicated on Adams Field. At the dedication ceremony, then–Co-Head of School Peggy Lee reflected, “Wayne’s example of setting high expectations in the classroom and on the field, as well as his strong support of both students and colleagues, has left an indelible mark on Cushing’s history.” Wayne’s many other roles included dorm parent and director of Cushing’s Native American Preparatory School (NAPS). He is an honorary member of the Class of 2015.

Work encompassed significant infrastructure beneath Drew Common, improving this important center of campus activity. Cushing’s most energy-efficient building, it is the first dorm to be tied into the new central heating plant located at the Fisher-Watkins Dining Commons, which was renovated in 2017-2018.

Performing Arts in Review Members of Cushing’s Performing Arts Department became masters of improvisation in a year like no other. Faculty rose to the challenge and found ways to continue to guide students and help them develop new skills even amid unusual barriers.

THEATRE

Cushing Theatre presented two full main-stage productions, in many ways embracing the challenges of pandemic restrictions rather than fighting against them. COVID protocols, of course, had to be of primary concern. A few years ago, Performing Arts Department Chair Julia Ohm saw a play in Boston, a new work that intrigued her. Small Mouth Sounds, by Beth Wohl, requires a small cast of diverse actors without any specific family themes or requirements. The setting was a retreat—specifically structured around silence. “What could be better?” Ohm thought. “We could stage it outside the library, a space we’d used before and in fact a beautiful arc-like shape, reminiscent of theaters of ancient Greece.

Cushing’s music program was bustling throughout the year, working mostly remotely. Students learned about the multi-track digital recording and audio editing process and even explored composition.

Performers worked individually, listening to each other’s recorded excerpts while adding their own synchronized recordings. Audio and video recordings of all of their work are available by visiting

Additional musical highlights:

• The Cushing Jazz Ensemble created virtual performances of Joe Avery's Blues, Born Under a Bad Sign, and On the Sunny Side of the Street.

• The Cushing Chorus created a virtual video performance of Sam Cooke’s civil rights anthem, A Change Is Gonna Come, and also composed and recorded an original choral piece, We No Longer, which utilized lyrics derived from poems that the singers wrote in reaction to the events and protests of the previous summer.

• The Cushing Chamber Players carried on despite many pandemicrelated restrictions, creating audio recordings of five challenging pieces and a virtual video performance of four additional works.

• Two of the chamber musicians, senior violinist Jeffrey Cheung and freshman pianist Sarah Li, also performed in a virtual recital in May. DANCE

Dance students and faculty began the year by embracing virtual options. In the fall, the Cushing Dance Department presented its show, RENEW, as an informal video exhibit. A mix of studentchoreographed pieces along with Director of Dance Rebecca Rice’s original pieces, dance styles included modern, tap, ballet, and more.

In the spring, students in the dance program worked on Denishawn scarf dances created by dance pioneer Ruth St. Denis, as well as original modern contemporary and ballet pieces. Advanced Dance students incorporated scarves in “DeLachau” (1920), and the Intermediate Dance class worked on a creative contemporary modern piece. It was a beautiful way to end this unusual year.

Visual Arts Highlights This was a year that called us all into more solitary pursuits, and Cushing’s Visual Arts programs—always one of the strongest at any secondary school anywhere—continued to thrive.

A fall highlight was a surprise “pop-up” photography show installed in the wee hours of the morning along the Main Building walkway.

During Cushing’s Winterim session—in between the fall and spring terms—visual arts students wrote a story of their own life, illustrated it, and created a handmade book as part of a project called “The Value of Story.”

Through the year students, guided by skilled faculty, worked in Cushing’s workshops and beyond (even those learning remotely!) to create beautiful paintings, drawings, metalworks, jewelry, glassworks, ceramics, photographs, and architectural creations.



The gorgeous works that came out of the 2020-2021 school year were celebrated in the Cushing Academy Visual Arts Magazine.

In addition, Cushing students garnered an enormous number of outside accolades. Cushing visual artists received 45 awards this year



Archival images were incorporated into both videos, as well as in memory albums honoring the Reunion years ending in 0, 1, 5, and 6. Other popular pages celebrated Cushing traditions, offered video tours showing recent campus improvements, and presented a time capsule of historical and pop culture events. Alumni from the Classes of ’70 and ’71 were welcomed to the Gold Key Society with virtual flipbooks from their yearbooks, and a real-time, virtual get-together was held on June 5.

“We were thrilled to provide a website that showcases the greater Penguin Nation, alongside the classes who were celebrating milestones,” Brett said. “We also encourage alumni to return to campus for future reunions, or anytime they can. When even a single alumnus comes back to campus, it’s a reunion.”

In June 2022, the Academy hopes to host the biggest inperson reunion ever, with alumni from all graduating years invited to join us on campus. At that time, the Class of 2000 will open the time capsule that was to be opened on the occasion of their 20th reunion.
