THE VILLAGE by Abi Falase and Tatenda Shamiso, devised in collaboration with young people at the Almeida Theatre puts young people’s voices at the heart of the story.
In a world where out of touch politicians dictate rules that rob children of their futures and their identities, our characters are faced with one choice – to stand up and say no more. As a consequence of this act of protest, the young people face a future in juvenile detention or starting afresh in a society governed by and for the youth of Britain.
This exciting script demonstrates the wild and the wonderful ideas that the young people choose to introduce. With plenty of opportunity to see larger than life characters as well as some genuine and heartfelt young people facing difficult decisions in their new society. Oh – and a government spy of course!
Our work on this project has been so fun! The young performers working on this production have added hints of themselves to their characters. We have had honest conversations about young people’s voices being heard in society and how decisions about their today and tomorrow is made. It has been a joy to work with young people who are so enthused, engaged and supportive of one another.
What we hope you will take away from our show is that you’ll see through all of the comic failings and the farce that develop throughout the show, and see the genuine determination these young characters have to make their world better for everyone.
