The Overture Awards The Cincinnati Arts Association’s Overture Awards recognizes, encourages and rewards excellence in the arts among Tri-state students in grades 9-12. Its mission is to encourage arts education as an integral part of a student’s academic experience and to create an environment that encourages training in, and appreciation of, the arts. The Overture Awards Competition is the area’s largest solo arts competition and offers awards in six artistic disciplines: creative writing, dance, instrumental music, theatre, visual art, and vocal music. For the 2022 competition, students may win $3,000 (one awarded in each discipline) or a $1,000 finalist award (a total of eighteen awarded). Judges at all levels of the competition are from the professional arts community.

Founded in 1992, the Cincinnati Arts Association (CAA) is a not-for-profit organization that oversees the programming and management of two of the Tri-state’s finest performing arts venues – the Aronoff Center for the Arts and Music Hall – and is dedicated to supporting performing and visual arts.

Each year, CAA presents a diverse schedule of events; serves upwards of 700,000 people in its venues; features the work of talented local, regional, and national artists in the Weston Art Gallery (located in the Aronoff Center); and supports the work of nearly a dozen resident companies. KARLEY BURDICK • Grade 12, West Clermont High School • Studies with Just Off Broadway Karley is a member of Just Off Broadway’s national award-winning convention and competition team. She has received numerous competition awards and scholarships, and also teaches. While at the School for Creative and Performing Arts, she performed lead roles and solos in numerous productions, including The Nutcracker and Alice in Wonderland. Karley intends to pursue a BFA in dance.

AVA CASSIDY • Grade 11, School for Creative and Performing Arts • Studies with Just Off Broadway Ava is a junior dance major at the School for Creative and Performing arts. She also trains at Just Off Broadway and is a member of their nationally recognized performance team. Ava has had the privilege of performing in school productions, with the Cincinnati Ballet, and with Lachey Arts. She has won numerous awards in dance at workshops and competitions across the country. Ava plans to pursue a BFA in dance in college.

BRAYLAN ENSCOE • Grade 12, Laurel Springs School • Studies with Just Off Broadway Braylan took her first ballet class at de la Dance Center at the age of four and continues to train there as a part of their pre-professional ballet program. Braylan also teaches and trains in all genres of dance at Just Off Broadway where she is a member of their nationally recognized performance and convention teams.

She has won numerous regional and national dance awards including 2022 Miss Dance of America and the 2021 Overture Award for dance. Braylan looks forward to performing live on stage this year in the finals. She plans to attend Chapman University in the Fall, where she will major in dance.

NEHA GUNDA • Grade 12, William Mason High School • Studies with Cultural Centre of India Neha is a 17-year-old Indian Classical Dancer trained in the styles of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. She attends William Mason High School, has competed in various local and state dance competitions, and has performed at esteemed events such as the International Women’s Day Festival. She is thankful for the endless support received from her teacher, family, and friends!

CHARLOTTE HAGEN • Grade 11, Mariemont High School Charlotte is a junior at Mariemont High School and the founder of her school's creative writing club. In previous years, she attended workshops through Butler University, Kenyon College, and Denison University. When not writing, Charlotte is practicing cello, keeping up with schoolwork, or reading the nearest book. She hopes to one day write the same kind of stories that helped her fall in love with literature in the first place.

NKEMDILIM (ANNA ROSE) MATU • Grade 10, William Mason High School Anna is a sophomore at William Mason High School, an editor of her school's literary magazine, and a Junior Varsity player on the MHS Academic Team.

She has received two Scholastic Silver Keys in poetry and one in painting. A lover of thunderstorms and creepy-crawlies, Anna writes to admire the world and to learn to live with its flaws.

ELIZA O’KEEFE • Grade 11, Walnut Hills High School Eliza is a junior at Walnut Hills High School. Her work has been recognized

by YoungArts and the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. She is an editor at Polyphony Lit and has attended the Sewanee Young Writers’ Conference.

DEEYA PRAKASH • Grade 12, Sycamore High School Deeya is a senior at Sycamore High School, and she is so excited to return to the Overture Awards for the third year in a row! After writing her first short story about fish in kindergarten, she has only grown fonder of creative writing and is very excited to pursue it in college. Aside from her love of memoir, creative nonfiction, poetry, and even the occasional rap, Deeya also enjoys playing golf, reading, and competing for her school's Mock Trial team.

CHRISTY KIM • Grade 10, William Mason High School Christy is a sophomore at William Mason High School. She won the first prizes in the David L. Pierson Concerto Competition in 2021, the Jack & Lucille Wonnell Young Artist Concerto Competition in 2020, and the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra (CSYO, Concert) 2018-19 Concerto Competition.

She has performed at Music Hall and was the concertmaster of 2022 Ohio Music Education Association Southwest All-State Orchestra and the CSYO (Concert) for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.

GRACE KIM • Grade 9, William Mason High School • Studies with Randolph Bowman Grace is a freshman at William Mason High School. She received the second prizes in the National Flute Association Junior Soloist Competition in 2021, the 2021 Louisville Young Artist Concerto Competition, and the Central Ohio Flute Association Competition in 2019. She also won the first places in Laudie Porter Memorial Competition in 2021, Jack & Lucille Wonnell Young Artist Concerto Competition in 2020, and the Flute Society of Kentucky Junior Soloist Competition in 2019.

ARI WEBB • Grade 11, Wyoming High School • Studies with Alan Rafferty Ari is a 16-year-old Venezuelan-American cellist from Cincinnati, Ohio. In 2021, Ari won the State of Ohio Buckeye Auditions and was selected to perform in the NPR radio show From the Top in a performance with artists Tessa Lark and Peter Dugan. He is a winner of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition and will perform with the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra in the Spring of 2022.

KELIANG YAO • Grade 9, Seven Hills School • Studies with Soyeon Kate Lee Keliang is a 15-year-old pianist and a freshman at The Seven Hills School.

Keliang started playing piano at the age of four and is a student of Professor Soyeon Kate Lee. Keliang loves classical music and has won many awards, including the 2021 Ohio MTNA Competition (senior alternate), the 2020 New Albany Symphony Concerto Competition (honorable mention), and the 2019 Ohio MTNA Competition (junior winner). In addition to playing piano, she enjoys reading and spending time with friends.

SELA FOSTER • Grade 11, The Foster Academy • Studies with Kelly McKenzie-Thurley Sela Foster is a homeschooled junior in high school. She attends all of her classes at Thomas More University and Northern Kentucky University as a dual-credit student. From the time she was a young child, her heart has always belonged to music. Singing a multitude of genres, she found her passion for jazz several years ago while studying with Kelly McKenzie-Thurley. Jazz's freedom and challenging melodies fuel her passion as she cultivates her art form.

CLAIRE HARDEK • Grade 12, Indian Hill High School • Studies with Dr. Kimberly Buczek Claire is overjoyed to have been selected as a finalist for the Overture Awards!

In her spare time, Claire enjoys participating in Mock Trial and theatre productions. Her favorite past roles include Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera, Jo March in Little Women, and Cosette in Les Misérables. She is excited to announce that next fall she will be attending Duke University to study Economics and Voice.

LUKE RANDAZZO • Grade 12, School for Creative & Performing Arts • Studies with Golden Voice Studio Luke is a senior at the School for Creative and Performing Arts and has been taking voice lessons with Kathy Cammett for four years. Luke has also been performing in the Young Artists Preparatory Program for the last four years, performing selections from The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, and others. Luke is currently applying to undergraduate conservatory programs such as Juilliard and CCM for a degree in Vocal Performance.

ELLA VAUGHN • Grade 11, Walnut Hills High School • Studies with Musical Arts Center Ella's earliest memories include singing and performing. Now a junior at Walnut Hills High School, she has a passion for music. Ella participates in musical theater at her school, studies voice with Karl Resnik at the Musical Arts Center, and is in the Young Artist Preparatory Program for opera training. She loves to sing and plans to study music in college, majoring in vocal performance.

BRIANNA BIRKLE • Grade 12, Mercy McAuley High School Brianna has always been fascinated with art, especially with creating colored pencil portraits. Currently, she combines her interests in diverse art mediums (including drawing, photography, fashion, and baking) with her passion for history and the art nouveau style. She hopes to continue creating artwork that is shaped by her fascination with history and to pursue a career in art conservation.

EMMA OLSZEWSKI • Grade 12, Ursuline Academy Emma is a senior at Ursuline Academy, where she enjoys all things art and creativity. Outside of school, she continues to do art, and her main passion is painting murals for private homes and businesses. She will be continuing her education through DAAP at the University of Cincinnati and cannot wait to see what the future holds.

MARSHALL SHORTEN • Grade 11, Oak Hills High School Marshall is an award-winning, published artist who has always gravitated to art and finds enjoyment with all elements related to the creative process. He is interested in the exploration of new media through processes such as digital design, animation, and videography. Science fiction and dystopian works and imagery fuel the inspiration for his illustrations. Marshall intends to pursue a career path that will include video editing paired with graphic design.

EMMA WANG • Grade 12, Ursuline Academy Emma has had a passion for art ever since she could hold a pencil. She specializes in sculpture and fashion, although her favorite part about being an artist is experimenting with a broad range of art forms. Her other hobbies include playing the violin and Chinese violin and long-distance running.

CLAIRE DILLON • Grade 11, Sycamore High School • Studies with Melody Wallace Claire's first on-stage performance was in Annie at age five. Favorite roles include The Cat in the Hat in Seussical, Race in Newsies, and Vivienne in Legally Blonde: The Musical. She has danced at The Studio for Dance for 10 years and has trained at The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati, Lachey Arts, and CCM's Musical Theater Intensive (MTI). Claire plans to pursue a Musical Theater degree after high school.

PAYTON HINES • Grade 12, Sycamore High School • Studies with Karl Resnik Payton is a senior at Sycamore High School. For her final season, she will play Elle Woods in Legally Blonde: The Musical this April. Outside of school, she trains with Lachey Arts, Karl Resnik, and CCM's Musical Theatre Intensive (MTI). Payton plans to get her BFA in Musical Theatre. She is incredibly thankful for her Cincinnati arts community, her family, Lea and Drew Lachey, Mr. Whapham, and Karl Resnik.

JOSEPH KAYNE • Grade 11, Indian Hill High School • Studies with Kathy Cammett Joseph is honored to be a finalist in the theater category of the Overture Awards.

Joseph has been performing since a young age and is currently appearing as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. Past roles included Barbary Tucker in Hello Dolly, Laurie Laurence in Little Women, and Bert in Mary Poppins. In addition to theater, Joseph enjoys leading and singing in the self-started nonprofit The Power of Music, competing in Mock Trial, and participating in outdoor activities.

SOPHIA TREFZ • Grade 11, School for Creative and Performing Arts Sophia is a junior at the School for Creative and Performing Arts, where she majors in drama. Sophia has enjoyed acting since she was in the second grade.

This is her second time being in the Overture Awards, and she is excited about the opportunity it brings. She would like to thank her mom for helping her as she strives to become the best performer she can be.

ARTS EDUCATOR AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN ARTS INSTRUCTION The Arts Educator Award promotes and rewards excellence in arts instruction throughout Greater Cincinnati. An educator who teaches any of the following arts disciplines may be nominated: Creative Writing, Dance, Instrumental Music, Theater, Visual Art, and Vocal Music. They can be a high school arts specialist, teaching artist working with high school students, or an arts professional or educator providing private lessons or instruction. Nominations for the award must come from students between the ages of 14-19 who are currently enrolled in high school. Nominations are made by submitting an on-line application with a three-minute video about why the nominee is an exemplary arts educator.

The winner of the 2022 award will receive $1,000. The recipient of the Arts Educator Award may utilize the monetary award to strengthen their program or practice, e.g. artist fee for guest lecturer or master class, purchase of equipment, or a professional learning opportunity, such as tuition assistance for either the educator or for students to study with the recipient or another professional.

History of the Award The Arts Educator Award was first introduced during the 2006-07 Season as the “Theater Educator Award,” which was originally created by Jackie Demaline, former Cincinnati Enquirer theatre critic and arts reporter, as one of the first initiatives of the Enquirer’s Acclaim Awards for Excellence in Cincinnati Theatre. With its move to the Cincinnati Arts Association’s Overture Awards program, in 2015, the Theatre Educator Award has broadened its scope to become the Arts Educator Award.
