In Appreciation of Stephen D. Rose Throughout the years, Curtis has been the fortunate beneficiary of the love and dedication of many parents whose gifts of time, wisdom and caring have contributed to making Curtis the exceptional school and community it is today. Stephen Rose is one of these individuals who has given so much of himself to Curtis. Stephen joined the Board of Trustees as a member in 2006. Since then, he has sat on every Board committee, beginning with the Finance Committee. He has been Board Treasurer, and he was instrumental in growing and securing Curtis’s endowment by instituting an investment strategy that ensures a strong foundation for the school’s future. Dan Rothbauer, Curtis’s COFO, also credits Stephen with “providing steady, thoughtful and measured counsel and leadership that assured the school’s stability during the worldwide financial crisis that began in 2008.”

Groups of teachers gathered on a regular basis in depth of study groups to dive into curricular discussions around writing and mathematics, and they formulated Goals for Learning in these disciplines. Our new makerspace was a beehive of activity, drawing children in all grades to experiment, tinker and participate in design challenges. In its second year, Curtis’s unique Educational Travel Fellowship program gave six of our teachers the extraordinary opportunity to travel to Egypt, New Zealand, Italy, Costa Rica and the eastern United States. We look forward to seeing the ways in which these experiences will enrich curriculum and teaching practice. Our critical work around inclusivity continued with the formation of the Parent Group on Inclusivity and the Faculty Inclusivity Group. We also worked tirelessly and with excitement to plan for the inaugural year of Curtis’s World Language Program and to restructure the 6th grade academic program in order to better prepare our students to transition to secondary school.
At the core of every conversation, whether about specific areas of curriculum or general programs, we begin by asking ourselves: “How can we best serve our school mission and steward it forward in an ever more dynamic world?” In our daily interactions with our students and, beyond graduation, our alumni, we endeavor to nurture and grow young people of character who are also critical thinkers, effective communicators, respectful collaborators and resilient problem solvers. Our school community could not be more proud of the boys and girls who grace our campus with their natural curiosity, joy of learning and sincere appreciation for the friendships they have with each other. We are so grateful for the unconditional love and support each member of our community contributes to our treasured school. The countless hours that our volunteers give so generously to Curtis and the financial generosity of our community that supports the work of our faculty, staff and Board of Trustees do not go unnoticed. To all of the members of our community, please accept our deepest and heartfelt appreciation for the myriad ways you ensure our ability to realize the school’s mission. Stephen D. Rose Chair of the Board of Trustees
Stephen has been Curtis’s superb Chair of the Board of Trustees since 2012, guiding the Board with exceptional judgment, expertise in a broad range of fields, and a huge store of personal warmth. A landmark of his legacy includes overseeing the crucial work of navigating the search for the best Head of School to carry forward Curtis’s mission and the subsequent transition to Meera Ratnesar’s inspired leadership. After five years of deft and devoted service as Board Chair, Stephen stepped down in June of this year, but we are extremely fortunate that he will continue to sit on the Board as a member and lend his insight, knowledge and great affection for Curtis to the Board’s work. As Board Chair, Stephen has left an indelible imprint on his colleagues. Katherine Holmes-Chuba, who has served alongside him since 2008, says, “Stephen’s tireless energy and commitment was something to behold. He was present at every meeting, including all the committee ones … and always with a hug and a smile!” Trustee Alex Nehorai notes Stephen’s “ability to be a great father, husband, and leader in his field, while still finding the time to give to our community.” Curtis School and the Curtis community are deeply grateful to Stephen for his dedicated service as Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Early in April, I made my way to Reggio Emilia to attend a conference about the renowned teaching approach that is named after this city, where it originated shortly after World War II. Reggio Emilia remains a mecca for observation and demonstration of this influential educational philosophy, and teachers from Africa to Australia and everywhere in between streamed into this northern Italian city to take part in the conference. Unlike traditional teaching, the Reggio Emilia approach is not a “method.” Instead of modeling a task or sharing knowledge with students, teachers dialogue with them and provide materials to further discovery. Touring a classroom, I observed a teacher leave paper and markers near a group of boys who were playing with Hot Wheels cars, and later, she brought sheets of plastic and an overhead projector. Soon all four boys were designing racetracks, projecting them onto the floor and racing their cars. Without being prompted, they proceeded to critique their designs and brainstormed together how they might tweak them. My research question was: “Can the Reggio Emilia approach work in a traditional school like Curtis?” Environment is considered the “third teacher,” in addition to parents/classroom teachers and the child, and is recognized for its ability to inspire children. Natural light and plants are utilized in classrooms to blur the line between indoors and outdoors; there are many open areas for collaboration; and abundant materials are available for self-expression. We have one of the most beautiful elementary school campuses in Los Angeles; why not bring some of that indoors? In addition, each group of children is unique, and classrooms can reflect this by adapting the environment instead of remaining the same from year to year. I look forward to seeing how the Reggio Emilia approach can further enrich our learning environment at Curtis.

My summer travels traced America’s past from St. Augustine, Florida, north to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I traveled to the sites of some of the thirteen English colonies and early European settlements, where I explored firsthand elements of daily colonial life, reasons why some Europeans decided to settle in the New World, and connections between Colonial America and America today. In the course of two weeks, I stopped at more than ten locations that included historically significant destinations such as Wormsloe Estate in Savannah, Georgia; the Old Slave Mart Museum in Charleston, South Carolina; George Washington’s home, Mount Vernon; Jamestowne Settlement; and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, just to name a few. Through my travels, I peeled back the layers to deepen my understanding of early American history. I am energized and excited to share my experiences and insights with my students in our daily social studies units and look forward to further enriching the fifth grade interdisciplinary colonial project that is a central and much enjoyed (by both teachers and students) piece of the fifth grade curriculum.

We were thrilled to receive a fellowship grant that allowed us to travel to the beautiful Caribbean coast of Costa Rica in order to study the rainforest. From the gorgeous forest canopies of Cahuita National Park to the sloth-lined shores of Punta Uva, we had the opportunity not only to observe this country’s wildly diverse residents firsthand, but also to learn about the ways in which the flora and fauna provide for both the creatures of the forest and humankind as well. A visit to the indigenous village of Talamanca delivered a crash course in medicinal plant usage, and a bonus lesson in chocolate making that was as delicious and informative as it sounds! We made lifelong human and animal friends at the Toucan Rescue Ranch, and we also visited the world-famous Sloth Sanctuary to learn all about one of Costa Rica’s most famous— and misunderstood—animals: the sloth. Did you know that sloths are actually two- or three-fingered, as opposed to “toed”? All sloths have three toes; it’s the fingers that distinguish them! It was a trip of a lifetime, bursting at the seams with lessons to bring back to Curtis students about one of the most precious, vital and complex ecosystems of our planet, and about our role in understanding, respecting and preserving it.

Seeing Egypt had been a dream of mine ever since I was a young child. I have always been curious and fascinated by ancient civilizations. When I learned about the Educational Travel Fellowship program, I decided that I would apply for a grant to visit Egypt, even though 2016-2017 was only my first year teaching at Curtis. I was, therefore, delighted, surprised and so grateful to receive a fellowship!

I traveled nearly the whole length of Egypt along the river Nile, visiting Alexandria, Cairo, Luxor and Aswan, with stop-overs at small villages along the way. The city I was most looking forward to was Luxor. I dreamed of seeing the Great Hypostyle Hall of the Karnak temple complex. Walking through this structure and standing among its massive columns, more than 3,000 years old, was absolutely magical and an experience I will never forget.

The hall consists of 134 columns arranged in 16 rows; each column measures 10 or 21 meters in height. Some 30 pharaohs contributed to the construction, which started in the Middle Kingdom and lasted into Ptolemaic times—more than 2,000 years. I cannot wait to share with my Curtis students about the colors and writing techniques that were used in ancient Egypt. On some artifacts and structures (including columns in the Karnak temple complex), these pigments, made from natural substances, are still visible and remarkably vibrant after thousands of years. I plan to replicate some Egyptian artwork and hieroglyphs with students, and we will even make our own papyrus paper to make our projects authentic to ancient Egypt.

My trip to New Zealand was filled with adventure. I visited a fifth grade classroom and participated in a “Love Your Water” presentation; planted trees and took part in harbor cleanups; and learned about the Maori language and culture. One of the most memorable places I visited was the Orakei Marae. The Marae is sacred to the Maori, and you must receive a ceremonial blessing from a male member of the tribe with status to enter certain areas. Each visitor must also introduce themself and share where their mana comes from—mana is where one gets one’s power/energy, usually a specific place. The ceremony was so touching as we shared our stories. Afterwards, we embraced our host in the Maori way by touching noses and shaking hands. We in turn were embraced by the spirit of the Maori ancestors and their representatives of today. During my trip, I volunteered with a coastal conservation organization. The labor of gardening, pulling weeds, cutting trees, and
trekking through water to clean the harbors was intense. It pushed me beyond my comfort zone and took determination, and I will share those moments with my students. I never considered myself as someone with a green thumb, so getting into the dirt and moving plants did not feel natural. The finished project made everything worthwhile, as I was reminded of how plants and trees help to prevent erosion and counter climate change. My meeting with New Zealand students was another high point. I was so impressed by their knowledge about the environmental effects of plastic in the oceans. They knew which marine animals have been affected by littering, and they had been practicing using alternatives to plastic. Their example fired me up and I am excited to help our students learn how they too can be active in contributing to the health of our oceans.

Curtis continues to thrive in other areas, too. Our admissions and outplacement remain stellar, our arts and sports programs are the envy of our peers, and we remain extremely strong financially, with our endowment at record levels. Curtis’s strength and success would not be possible without the tireless efforts of a large number of people. First and foremost, on behalf of the whole Board of Trustees, our thanks go out to Meera and her entire team, who work with great energy, enthusiasm, and joy to make Curtis the special place we all love so much. Our thanks also go out to the many volunteers who graciously contribute their time, energy, and resources to all of the many activities and functions that are a big part of what makes Curtis so great.
Curtis’s trustees are volunteers who contribute a significant amount of their time and energy to ensure the strategic and financial strength of our school. For the 2017-2018 year, we welcome four new trustees, Vanessa Keith Garcia, Tracy Minker (’88), Jon Wimbish, and Rachel Yang. Each of these individuals has already been serving Curtis well, either on a Board committee, or as a PA or alumni leader. We are excited and fortunate to add such outstanding new members to the Board of Trustees. (Profiles of these new trustees appear on the pages that follow.) We also have three extraordinary outgoing trustees, Hassan Iken, Steven Levine, and Michael Tuchin, who stepped down from the Board at the end of the last school year. Each brought great judgment, commitment and collegiality to our Board. Hassan served for seven years, including as Chair of the Committee on Trustees and as Chair of the Major Gifts Committee. Steven also served for seven
years, including as Chair of the Investment Committee. Michael served for ten years in many important roles, including as Chair of the Advancement and Major Gifts Committees and as Co-Chair of the Head of School Search Committee. Hassan, Steven, and Michael were exceptional trustees and they will be missed. I know the entire Curtis community would like to thank them for their service. On a more personal note, after serving a five-year term as Board Chair, I stepped down at the end of the 2016-2017 school year. Allan Schweitzer (’79) succeeds me as Chair, and the Board of Trustees could not be in better hands. Allan is smart, strategic, dedicated, thoughtful, and warm. In addition to bringing the added perspective of being a Curtis alumnus, he has already been serving Curtis in a number of important ways, including as Chair of the Advancement Committee and as Co-Chair of the Head of School Transition Committee. Allan is just the right person to lead our Board as Curtis enters its next, wonderful phase. It has been a great privilege serving as Board Chair these past five years. Vanessa is a Special Projects Manager for the United States Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California, and lends her expertise to the executive officer of the court. Earlier, she was a founding teacher of Muscota New School in New York. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from UCLA and a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Teacher’s College, Columbia University.

Since joining Curtis, Vanessa has been an active volunteer in the Parents Association and fulfilled many roles. She co-chaired the 2015 Curtis Gras Fair and the Cougar Wear, Family Based Service and Fair Sponsorship committees. Vanessa was a Parents Association Representative for Diversity and Inclusivity (P.A.R.D.I.) and was selected to serve on the Head of School Inclusivity Task Force. She helped to found the Parent Group on Inclusivity (PGI) and leads this effort that continues the school’s critical work on diversity and inclusivity within our community with passion and heart. Vanessa serves the greater Los Angeles community as Vice President of Public Policy for the Junior League of Los Angeles, and the Garcia family regularly volunteers with Big Sunday, L.A. Works, One Voice and various local youth groups. Vanessa and her husband, Jeff, are the proud parents of Fallon (Curtis ’17) and Gentry (5th Grade). Fallon begins middle school at Brentwood School this year.
TRACY MINKER ’88 We are proud to welcome another one of our accomplished alumni to the Board of Trustees this year. Tracy (Myer) Minker is a member of the Curtis 6th Grade Class of 1988 and is a graduate of Marlborough School. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Bates College and a Master of Business Administration degree from Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business and Management. Tracy brings to the Board extensive experience in corporate strategy, management and e-commerce in the areas of manufacturing and retail business. She is the principal and owner of Mendelson & Associates, Inc., a fine jewelry design, manufacturing, and retail corporation that supplies the country’s largest retail chains including Kay’s, Jared’s, Zales and the U.S. Military Retail Exchanges. Tracy is responsible for corporate strategy and heads up Mendelson’s e-commerce and retail divisions. Previously, she led the Strategic Accounts Group for the parent company of Realtor.com, and was responsible for client engagements with Fortune 500 companies. Prior to that, Tracy honed her web development and e-commerce expertise running the business development and client relations divisions of an interactive digital engagement company that designed and hosted websites for the country’s leading corporate foundations. Tracy has been an active member of the school’s Alumni Council since 2007, and she served as its President from 2013 to 2015. Tracy and her husband, Scott, are the proud parents of Curtis Cougars Ethan (4th Grade) and Ainsley (K).
JON WIMBISH We are excited to welcome Jon Wimbish to the Board of Trustees. Jon is the Head of the Middle School at Harvard-Westlake and has more than 20 years’ experience as an educator in independent schools. We are pleased to have the benefit of his expertise as a teacher and administrator in one of the exceptional secondary schools to which many of our own students transition after 6th grade. Jon holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Princeton University and a Master of Arts degree in English from Middlebury College. Jon began his career at Cardigan Mountain School in Canaan, New Hampshire, returning later to California to take a job at Harvard-Westlake, where he taught English and public speaking and served as both a Middle School Dean and an Upper School Dean before assuming his current role. Jon has had a lengthy parallel career in athletics. At Princeton, he played football and volleyball. And between Cardigan and Harvard-Westlake, he has coached teams in football, volleyball, basketball, baseball and golf. As a Curtis parent, Jon has served on both the Advancement and Planning committees of the Board. Beyond Curtis, he sits on the Board of Children Mending Hearts, and he is a regular volunteer with New Friends Homeless Center in Encino. Jon and his wife, Amanda, who is the Chair of the English Department in Harvard-Westlake’s Middle School, are the parents of Curtis Cougars Franklin (5th Grade) and Lila (4th Grade).
RACHEL YANG Curtis parent Rachel Yang joins the Board of Trustees this year and brings experience in higher education with a focus on technology and the economy to her new role. She looks forward to contributing her expertise and we are delighted to welcome her as a new trustee. A Professor of Management, Rachel holds a doctorate in Technology Management, a Master of Science degree in Decision Analysis, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. She has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, UCLA Anderson School of Management, and New York Institute of Technology, and she has been a guest professor at several other universities as well. Rachel uses her background in education, technology, global markets, and project management to serve local and international communities. She is a recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award, and she is an advisor to the International Leadership Foundation. At Curtis, Rachel has been an active participant in the Parents Association, in fundraising, and in the life of the school. She was an auction chair and an International Lunch Day chair, and she has served on the school’s Major Gifts Committee. In addition, Rachel has hosted graduation and grade parties and chaperoned class field trips and orchestra and choir trips. Rachel and her husband, Don Ho, are the proud parents of three children, Angel Hoyang (HW ’18), Joy (Curtis ’16), in 8th grade at Harvard-Westlake, and Glory, in 6th grade at Curtis.

The trustees establish policy and work closely with the head of school to implement that policy. They provide indispensable overarching guidance that is informed by a variety of professional experience and diverse backgrounds. The work they carry on behind the scenes throughout the year, though often unseen, is crucial to Curtis School’s ability to thrive today and to serve future generations of students and families. Dear Curtis Families, IT WAS MY GREAT HONOR TO SERVE AS LAST YEAR’S PRESIDENT OF THE CURTIS PARENTS ASSOCIATION AND TO WORK ALONGSIDE OUR DEDICATED PARENTS, STUDENTS, FACULTY, ADMINISTRATION, AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES.

The Parents Association had a fantastic year of fundraising in 2016-2017. I congratulate and thank the PA committees and volunteers that organized and ran the Camp Curtis Fair, Party Book, Holiday Boutique, Book Spree, Parking Spot Auction/Raffle, and our inaugural Curtis Celebrates fundraising evening that had over 500 attendees. Because of these efforts, the Parents Association proudly contributed $346,700 to Curtis School, of which $3,765 was used to enhance the 6th grade lunch area and $342,935 was allocated to the Curtis Financial Aid Fund. The PA also provided approximately
$93,000 in additional support through Parent Enrichment programs, the Emerging Artists exhibition, Go Global Week, Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day, faculty and administration lunches, and the Last-Day-of-School Lunch. In addition to fundraising, the PA sponsored many incredible events on campus. Our community volunteered to serve Hot Lunch and assist in the Library, hosted a Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day, led campus tours for Admission Open Houses, and worked Fair shifts. The Enrichment Committees offered thoughtful events and service learning programs that fostered a deeper sense of community and inclusivity. Seedlings & Buds, the Thanksgiving Food Drive, and our Families Helping Families program carried forward the school’s mission to nurture a “compassionate heart.” In the spring, the PA launched Go Global Week, International Lunch Day, and the new Curtis Cares Community Service Day that brought our families, faculty and staff together to benefit several local non-profits in a planned community service effort. The PA also hosted Parent Enrichment speakers, including Nathan Dungan and Derrick Gay, and
events, including a screening of Screenagers with a visit from Common Sense Media, and “Let it Ripple 50/50 Day.” I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as President of the Parents Association in Curtis’s 92nd year. It was a great honor to work with an extraordinary PA Executive Board and all the parent volunteers who generously contributed their time, talent, and resources and whose efforts are a remarkable example of the commitment and dedication that make our community the very best! I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to the incredible Curtis staff, faculty and administration for their support: You are very much loved and truly respected for all your contributions! My family feels blessed to be a part of the Curtis community, which has given us so much. I will remember this year with great fondness, and I thank everyone for their support and friendship that made this year a success.

Parents Association Board 2016-2017 Curtis School is extraordinarily fortunate to be the beneficiary of unstinting support freely given by our active and committed parents and guardians. The Parents Association provides services too extensive to enumerate to the school, our students, our families and employees. Our goal is to develop, in every child, a sound mind in a sound body governed by a compassionate heart. We balance traditional and innovative pedagogical approaches in providing a well-rounded, challenging education. We develop children’s academic, intellectual, creative, athletic, and social potential through dynamic teaching and by actively engaging them in their own learning and moral growth. As a result, our students become young people of character who are also critical thinkers, effective communicators, respectful collaborators, and resilient problem solvers. Curtis graduates leave us as whole, self-disciplined, ethical beings, who are well prepared to pursue, confidently, the next stage in the journey of their lives.
