On the Move and Gaining Momentum The story of Curry College over the past year is one of turning vision into reality.

Our Curry Commitment program – the only job guarantee program of its kind in Massachusetts – was rolled out to the Classes of 2027, 2028, and 2029.

“People hear ‘finance’ and think it’s all numbers.

But really, it’s about understanding a narrative; how money moves, why decisions are made, and what those decisions mean.”

Dr. Mashuk Rahman

For Dr. Mashuk Rahman, finance doesn’t start with spreadsheets, complex formulas, or intricate data. It starts with a story.

Dr. Rahman’s professional story began here in Massachusetts, where he studied finance as an undergraduate before traveling south to earn his Ph.D. at the University of New Orleans. Along the way, he discovered something unexpected: he didn’t just enjoy learning about finance, but he also loved teaching it. Inspired by professors who connected markets to real-world events, history, and current headlines, he realized finance wasn’t isolated from other fields. It was intertwined with them.

And that interdisciplinary mindset now shapes the new Finance degree program at Curry.

In his classroom, students build from the basics, step by step, learning how to think through challenges, which is one of the key components to working in finance. “The numbers can look intimidating at first,” he says. “But once you understand the framework, it all starts to make sense.”

He compares it to investing. Everyone understands the idea of buying something low and watching it grow. From there, the math becomes a tool, and a way to tell the story of what’s happening behind the scenes.

With the small class sizes at Curry, Dr. Rahman can challenge his students academically while still supporting them as individuals. In advanced courses like Financial Modeling, students analyze real data, present market research, and tackle projects that mirror professional-level work. But he’s quick to point out: you don’t have to be a “math person” to thrive in this major.

“The students who do best are the ones who are curious,” he explains. “Finance is all about asking questions. Where is the market going? What’s the bigger picture?”

Mia Schena ’27 always knew she wanted a career centered on helping others. When she arrived at Curry, she began that journey in nursing, inspired by the compassionate care her grandfather received during his battle with Parkinson’s. But during her first year, a new opportunity shifted her path in an exciting direction.

After learning about Curry’s Exercise Science program, she immediately felt drawn to the new major.

Combining her passion for helping others with her lifelong love of sports, the program offered a path that felt both natural and energizing.

Now in her second year as an Exercise Science major, Schena is putting that passion into practice as an athletic training intern at South Shore Orthopedics, as part of the program’s first cohort of clinical placements. From the moment she stepped into the clinic, she began building real-world skills—working alongside experienced athletic trainers, assisting with patient flow, preparing casting materials, and fitting braces for patients while guiding them through proper use.

As her confidence has grown, so has her role in the clinic. What began as observation has evolved into meaningful, hands-on involvement, giving her a clearer understanding of both patient care and the behind-the-scenes processes of the industry. “There’s so much more that goes into the field than I realized,” she said. “It’s not just treating the injury—it’s understanding documentation, insurance coverage, and all the behind-the-scenes work that supports a patient’s recovery.”

Schena has also found that her classroom experience directly translates to the clinical setting. The case studies and work inside the Exercise Science Lab at Curry allows her to approach each patient interaction with both knowledge and confidence.

For Schena, the most rewarding part of her experience is the human connection. Whether working with young athletes or elderly patients, she values the opportunity to make someone feel more comfortable in a stressful moment. “Even just talking to someone and helping them feel at ease can make a big difference,” she says. And as a member of Curry’s women’s soccer team, her perspective as a student-athlete allows her to relate to patients in a meaningful way, supporting them not just physically, but emotionally as well.

Kylerr Bucano ’15

Operations Manager

The Hip Hop Museum When Kylerr Bucano ’15 stood on the Commencement stage to receive the prestigious New Era Award, it was the culmination of four years of helping to shape his community. He was a prominent and influential fixture on campus back then: a resident assistant, captain of the men’s basketball team, and president of both the Criminal Justice and Communication honor societies. Today, he’s applying those same leadership principles he developed at Curry to a landmark project: the launch of the Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx.

Inspired by faculty members like Professor Karen Lischinsky, Bucano initially sought a career in the criminal justice system, but eventually found his true calling in prevention and advocacy. He began his professional journey as a case manager for a GED program, helping at-risk youth navigate housing, food insecurity, and educational hurdles. His commitment to helping others led him to New York University, where he earned a Master of Social Work degree. “I always had that passion for helping

Today, Bucano is at the forefront of a cultural revolution. Working with his father, CEO Rocky Bucano at the Hip Hop Museum, he’s helping to document and celebrate the history of a genre that has shaped the world. In his role, Bucano manages social media, oversees project management for the museum’s evolving “Revolution of Hip Hop” exhibits, and ensures the museum’s story is told with accuracy, respect, and authenticity.

Bucano’s advice for current Curry students is to dive into every opportunity the College offers. Looking back at his decade-plus since graduation, he knows that the “soul feeding” work he does today is a direct result of being an active, engaged student — whether he was supporting classmates and teammates on campus or guiding young people in the community through difficult circumstances.

Today, as he helps to preserve the legacy of hip hop culture, his goal has remained the same — to make a meaningful impact.
