Business spotlight: Akard True Value Akard True Value Hardware, a Zionsville staple, has been open for nearly 65 years, yet it and its owners never stop finding new ways to support the community.

JJ Akard started the business in 1955 when he bought Zionsville Hardware, changing it to his namesake while living in an apartment above the store when he returned home from Vietnam.

When it first opened, the store was on Zionsville’s Main Street. In the late ‘70s, JJ’s son, Steve Akard, purchased the store from his father and moved it to the Boone Village Shopping Center a little more than a mile away, where it now resides.

Two decades later, Steve’s daughter, Leigh Ann Akard, returned to Zionsville after having been raised there as a child. She moved back with the intention of raising her own children there, instilling them with the strong sense of community that she had when she was growing up.

“I was not getting into hardware; that was the furthest thing from what I was going to do,” Leigh Ann said. “But, you know, you come back to your roots. I’ve been back 21 years, and the business just keeps growing and evolving.”

Despite initially thinking otherwise, she became a coowner of the business along with her father in 1999. Leigh Ann, 46, and Steve, 73, have operated the family business together out of the 25,000-square-foot storefront at 25 Boone Village ever since.

“Our roots are Zionsville,” Leigh Ann said. “That’s what makes the Village strong. Community is so important.

We jokingly call ourselves the Cheers of Zionsville, where everyone knows our name. And we wanted everyone to surround our kids with a great atmosphere.”

Part of the Zionsville community Leigh Ann loves the most is the support its residents have for each other.

“The hearts are so amazing. The compassion is so genuine and authentic. This community can come together and do the most amazing things,” she said.

The business and the Akard family have done work to support the community by hosting blood drives and backpack drives and collecting shoes for an annual shoe drive.

The store also serves as an everyday collection spot for the Caring Center, a nonprofit in Lebanon that aims to stabilize families in crisis, and it’s always looking for new partnerships with local nonprofits.

Leigh Ann, with the help of another local business owner, created the HAWK Foundation, a nonprofit established to benefit children with special needs.

The nonprofit works each Christmas to serve families that have members with special needs by throwing a Christmas event and giving gifts.

“This year’s family wish was for a little boy (asking) for Santa to visit him before he passed away,” Leigh Ann said.

“And we were there on Saturday and Sunday, and in the wee hours of the morning, the little guy passed away.

“We get more out of giving than we get. You’re more blessed to give than to receive.”

But in the last few years, the Akard family has been blessed with receiving support in addition to giving it.

Tragedy struck three years ago when Leigh Ann’s granddaughter, Charlotte King, was hospitalized with respiratory syncytial virus for five weeks. The community rallied around the family, and Charlotte was able to recover. But a year and a half later, Leigh Ann’s oldest son, Charlotte’s father, Stewart King, died unexpectedly.

“The community, the way they came around (us), is just amazing,” Leigh Ann said. “We feel very humbled because in what we’ve given, we’ve received far more than we’ve ever given. They’re helping us every day.”

A much-loved tradition: Christmas in the Village Each year, the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce hosts Christmas in the Village, a month-long event that highlights various Zionsville businesses and storefronts on Main Street and in Boone Village.

The event starts the Saturday after Thanksgiving and continues through Christmas, with most events scheduled for weekends during the holiday season.

The first weekend plays host to a parade and tree lighting with Santa sightings at both. A lot of businesses have events going on at their locations so that they can have a reindeer out front or other activities that entice people to visit.

The event features many kid- and family-friendly activities, including wagon rides, a barrel train and opportunities to visit Santa at his little house on Main Street. It also features activities dedicated solely for adults, such as its Ladies Night, where women can shop at some of the myriad boutiques on the town’s brick street, and a Christmas crawl at the town’s various bars and restaurants.

“This past year, we started something new called Santa on the Move to make sure many of the businesses in midtown were also welcomed with Santa – so they felt included in our Christmas activities – and we hope to expand that,” Zionsville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Allyson Gutwein said. “We had a cookie-decorating, scavenger hunt, snowflake seek and find at zWORKS. It was a fantastic year.”

Erica Carpenter, owner of Fivethirty home, said Christmas in the Village greatly benefits Zionsville businesses during the holiday season.

“As a business owner, obviously, I’m always trying to get the word out about what we have to offer here in our store. It’s definitely a positive impact for me. It’s a positive impact for the small businesses here, and it creates a lot of exposure for us.

“It used to be a small parade and then a separate day with a tree lighting, when the tree was in the middle of the street,” Carpenter said. “It’s grown into something that is definitely a destination.”

Gutwein said the increase in traffic alone is great visibility for businesses, and not only important for the day that the people visit during the holidays, it’s important year-round.

“It gets people to pay attention to what we have there and not just come back during the holiday season but (also) encourages them to come back all year because of these activities that draw them in during the holidays,” Gutwein said. “And the fact that we have such a charming, quaint town, such a vibrant business community, that’s really important for people to see not just for the holidays but year-round.

“You get a lot of vacationers during the holidays and during the summer just because people have time to travel with their families because kids are out of school; families are traveling for the holidays specifically,” Gutwein said.

“That’s a great time to showcase our town. We’re trying to do a lot of marketing that brings people back year-round.

Events are fantastic. We want them to come each and every time they think of some place to go shop and dine, and having these events drives that.”

From back in the day to today: The Friendly Tavern The Friendly Tavern’s building was built in the 1870s. The restaurant originally was a wagon works factory that made carriages and shipped them by railroad.

Workers forged steel in what is now the bar area, and on the second floor, which was built as an addition many years later, workers assembled the carriages.

The building eventually was bought and became Russell and Son, a family owned plumbing and heating company.

The owner, Charles Russell, later relinquished the business to his sons. And in 1958, one of them, Hearn Russell, converted the business into a restaurant, naming it The Friendly Tavern.

“It’s certainly the oldest restaurant in Zionsville at this point,” current owner Scott Barnes said. “It’s a central part of the community because so many people know of it, and it does draw people to the area.”

Barnes, 65, started in the restaurant business 45 years ago by taking odd jobs to help pay for his schooling at Butler University.

In 2002, Barnes bought The Friendly Tavern after he had managed various restaurants for 21 years with a management company. He wanted to focus on a single restaurant and propel it using his decades of restaurant experience. Barnes said the real estate, coupled with a successful business in a growing area with a diverse clientele was too much to pass on.

During the last 18 years, Barnes has seen Zionsville’s population grow. The town’s population has swelled from 11,364 to 26,710, as of 2017, according to the United States Census Bureau’s most recent estimates.

“It’s diverse because they come from all over,” Barnes said. “They’ll come down from Frankfort. They’ll come from Kokomo. They’ll come from Danville, Avon, the whole west side. They come up from Greenwood. I get them from all over the place. And some of them are regulars that come from Fishers, Carmel, Geist area.”

A lot of the regular customers come once or twice a week, Barnes said. And it isn’t uncommon to see a line out the door of The Friendly Tavern most days of the week when the weather is pleasant.

“I think people like the feel of the tavern,” Barnes said.

“They like that old tavern feel rather than – everybody has new and shiny restaurants. And I think you have to have good quality food and quality service, and be friendly.

“We know a lot of the people by name. The restaurant business is just treating people like family and not just a number – knowing their names, knowing what they drink, their habits, those kinds of things. Servers and everyone buy in, and we treat people that way. From a restaurant standpoint, I couldn’t find a better restaurant to own.”

A strength: Zionsville Community Schools Zionsville Community Schools has championed two programs that school officials say will propel current students for years to come.

ZCS serves two townships: Eagle and Union townships in Boone County (a portion of Eagle Township is in the Whitestown municipality). It enrolls more than 7,000 students and boasts a 98.2 percent graduation rate, though school officials are investigating ways to bolster that rate.

ZCS Superintendent Scott Robison said the continued development of the school system’s Strong in Every Way program, which aims to foster student grit and develop assets for students, has improved the school system in a host of ways.

“It has really driven (our) ability to make some hard decisions,” Robison said.

The program, funded in part by a Lilly grant, led ZCS officials to increase staffing for its safety programming and delay school start times based on research indicating later start times are more advantages for young people and their sleep patterns.

Yet Robison said the real strength of the Strong in Every Way initiative is its emphasis on students’ social and emotional responses.

“We found before we won the Lilly grant three years ago that our councilors were treating students for anxiety beginning by about age four and a half, even before many of them had entered kindergarten,” Robison said. “We thought we better get systematic about dealing with it, so that’s why Strong in Every Way and the Lilly grant combined to bring in a special counseling curriculum for grades K through 8 called Second Step.”

Robison said Second Step now is in its second full year and it allows students to have “common experiences that

include the five traits of success identified in our Strong in Every Way program.” The five traits the program identifies are confidence, compassion, determination, ethics and wellness.

“Teaching those things systematically through Second Step and other means across the elementary, middle school, high school years, I think, is going to pay long-term dividends in helping our youth be as prepared as they can be. And, of course, no one is strong in every way, but, certainly, it’s something we aspire to for all of students such that they are as strong in every way as possible.”

In addition, Robison said school systems often have students who do not fit the traditional model commonly seen in school systems, so ZCS started the customized learning program in an effort to allow its schools to better fit those students who would benefit from a customized schedule.

The ZCS customized learning program was designed to meet the unique needs of various junior and senior high school students. Under the program, they are given the opportunity to alter their schedule to meet their needs, whether it means planning around an internship in the middle of the day or altering their schooling to align with a study abroad opportunity.

The customized learning program includes an IUPUI partnership, a community-service course, social and emotional workshops, acollege and career exploration and/or internship course and a work based employability standards course, among other curriculum.

The program, since its start in the fall 2019 semester, has resulted in 227 credits earned for the 36 current students enrolled in the program. Robison said the number was one of the most important data points of 2020 because the students in the program may not have earned any credits without it.

Racing forward with positive economic impact Zionsville has celebrated an influx of new businesses and the start of a series of infrastructure improvements to start 2020.

Zionsville Mayor Emily Styron opened her State of the Town address this year with the announcement that the Zionsville Redevelopment Commission received offers to purchase lots in Creekside Corporate Park, a business park close to the town’s Main Street.

One of the offers includes a 100,000-square-foot headquarters building for the multi-series race team Rahal Letterman Lanigan and a 100,000-square-foot headquarters building for an office user that has yet to be announced – the developer for the latter is William Tres. Together, these companies expect to bring 600 new jobs to Zionsville, many of which will offer six-figure salary jobs.

Styron also announced other new businesses are coming to Zionsville’s Main Street, including a bridal shop and the restaurant Tipsy Mermaid. A duo of distilleries will also open locations in Zionsville – Alchemy Spirit, Hotel Tango – to complement Black Acre Brewing Co.’s second Indiana location, the Corvus- Black Acre Rotisserie, Taproom and Bourbon Bar. “Our priority right now is to look for ways we can build value for our residents, for corporate leaders, our business owners, our service providers,” Styron said, “and we can do that by listening and removing roadblocks and obstacles to provide the services and the goods and experiences that our residents want to have in our town – and to provide

the job opportunities that will really be game changers for Zionsville.”

In addition, the Town focuses on a number of infrastructure projects to expand services to its residents this year. One of which, the Sycamore Street bridge project, headed by the Boone County Highway Dept., will provide a safe entry point for the next 80 years at one of Zionsville’s primary gateways, Boone County Commissioner Tom Santelli said.

“You want new businesses to bring in more customer activity into certain parts of the town,” Styron said. “We are improving the roads to accommodate for that growth in traffic because the economic development initiatives are encouraging more traffic, inviting more people to come into different areas in town. So they are very much a symbiotic relationship: the infrastructure development and the economic development.”

A number of the other planned infrastructure projects will improve and widen county roads within the town’s borders.

Others will provide sanitary sewer services.

“They are all projects that have been planned for years,” Styron said. “They are going to address traffic movement issues. They are going to enable us to, in many ways, extend sanitary sewer to areas that have wanted this for so long on Oak Street. It really is going to improve safety in some areas. When they are finished, they will add to the quality of life and just the general well being of our community.”

Need filled: Zionsville Boys & Girls Club The Zionsville Boys & Girls Club fills a need in the community despite not being a typical demographic for the organization, one Boys & Girls Club official said.

“The Community Foundation of Boone County did a needs assessment last fall and the number two issue in Boone County is a lack of activities for kids under 21,” Katie Reasoner, resource development director of Boys & Girls Club of Boone County, said. “Since our niche is that 5 to 18 (age group), we are a big player in creating more activities for that.”

The organization offers after-school programming for kids 5-18 years olds. It also offers sports programs – basketball, volleyball and T-ball – summer camps and community events.

The nationwide organization’s three areas of focus for children are academic success, civic engagement and promoting healthy lifestyles, all of which have specific programs dedicated to realizing these goals.

Reasoner said every week day the organization hosts study power hours directly after school release to help students get ahead with their homework. To promote healthy lifestyles, the organization offers a triple play program which champions healthy habits, daily challenges and social recreation to enrich a childs “mind, body and soul.” It also touts leadership clubs, called Torch Club, centered on civil engagement and fundraising events.

The organization also makes it easier for parents to enroll their children in the club with its transportation to and from before and after school programming from all schools in the community, Reasoner said.

“The mission of the Boys & Girls Club nationally is to be accessible for all kids, the ones who need us the most. So we try to break down as many economic barriers as we can.

You know, Zionsville, Ind., isn’t your typical demographic for a Boys & Girls Club, but, I think, we are misrepresented a little bit because there is still so much need.”

It isn’t uncommon for the Zionsville club to see families with children on free- or reduced-lunch school programs to also enroll with the club, despite Zionsville’s reputation for relative affluence.

“Even if you are in the 46077 zip code, there is still need here, and we have scholarships opportunities for those students.”

But Reasoner said the organization most importantly enriches its children through invaluable mentorships and strong relationships with its staff and volunteers, who vary in age from 18-year-old former club members to 75-year-olds who have worked at one of the county’s club locations for more than a decade.

“Since I handle all the marketing and fundraising, I’m in between all three clubs in the community a lot,” Reasoner said, “but every time I walk in the Whitestown club, Janice (a 10-year-old girl enrolled in the club) runs up and gives me a hug. And I go and find Janice to make sure I get Janice’s hug every time I’m there. I think that’s one of the greatest things I’ve learned from my 18 months of being with the organization: the relationships these kids have with the staff.”

Shari Jenkins says people fuel her two, and soon to be three, Zionsville restaurants Shari Jenkins owns two restaurants in Zionsville: Noah Grant’s Grill House and Oyster Bar and Salty Cowboy Tequileria. As Jenkins greets customers walking through the door, she addresses them by name, smiling. She has known them for years – their names, their regular orders, their personal lives – and they, in turn, have gotten to know her and her staff.

Jenkins had an interest in the restaurant business since she was young, working as a server at a local restaurant to save for college when she was just 14. For years, she continued to work at a restaurant, waiting tables to supplement her income as a teacher.

Jenkins, who grew up in Zionsville in a family of five and graduated from Zionsville Community High School, opened her first restaurant, Noah Grant’s, 13 years ago. She knew she was ready for a challenge, and shifting to something familiar – a familiar line of work, a familiar town – felt right.

“The opportunity came for me to become a partner in a business,” Jenkins said. “And my son was born, and I thought it was a good time to enter the crazy world of the restaurant business. I knew the town; I knew the people of the town, so I knew the needs, or what I thought were the needs.”

In 2014, Jenkins opened her second restaurant, Salty Cowboy Tequileria. Ever since, she has worked to create an inviting atmosphere in her restaurants for both customers and her staffs.

“She definitely makes a focus on making it a family with the staff and the regulars that come in,” Noah Grant’s server Leah Walker said. “She makes an emphasis on people coming back. As a server, she wants us to make a connection with our customers beyond just serving them food.”

Jenkins plans to open a third restaurant in Zionsville, and she never plans to leave the town.

“It’s the people,” Jenkins said. “The people in Zionsville want to support local people. It’s the people of Zionsville: They are just the best customers.”
