Town’s budget calls for more firefighters

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com The Town of Zionsville plans to add six firefighters, give raises of about 3 percent to town employees and have temporary deficit spending in 2027.

Those were some of the highlights from Zionsville Mayor John Stehr’s budget presentation Aug. 30 to the Zionsville Town Council. The annual presentation gives council members and the public an overview of next year’s proposed budget.

Stehr said the town plans to dip into its reserves to cover deficit spending over the next two years. The town has $40 million in reserves, amounting to an 85 percent surplus, which is well above the recommended 15 to 20 percent. The town’s 2027 budget projects using about $1.6 million in reserve funds to cover the spending gap.

“We do have a five-year plan in place that shows we can spend this money now to sustain our operations and the level of services expected by our constituents,” Stehr told the council.

The deficit spending is because of the expected impacts of property tax legislation that will reduce how much tax revenue the town collects as the legislation is phased in over the next couple years.

Stehr said by 2030, the town should be back to a positive cash flow.

Changes to local income tax law will change how the revenue is allocated and allow municipalities to set their own rate. Local governments are expected to shift to local income taxes for

funding services.

The town has had a soft hiring freeze since Senate Enrolled Act 1 was signed into law, but that’s ending. Stehr said the town wants to hire six more firefighters next year with 18-23 more in the next four years to meet Zionsville Fire Department’s staffing needs.

A grant could net ZFD additional staff if the town’s application is successful.

Stehr said a smaller reserve fund could help the application process.

The budget also proposed another street technician for the Department of Public Works, an IT employee focused on police and fire and a deputy director for the planning and building department.

Stehr said the hiring freeze has been challenging for the Zionsville Planning & Building Department in recent years.

“The volume of work has only been increasing,” he said.

Town employees will receive 27 paychecks in 2027 the way the calendar falls, which will result in additional pay

of 3.85 percent, which the town intends to make the new base in 2028.

The Zionsville Police Department does not plan to hire any additional officers next year; however, with new neighborhoods shifting to the urban service district — the Courtyards of Russell Oaks, Courtyards at Heritage Trail and Wild Air — Stehr said up to five more officers will be needed by 2031.

The last couple phases of an Oak Street pathway project, including the construction of a bridge on the west side of town, will be moved to 2028 to fit the budget.

The 2027 budget calls for paying one naturalist from Zionsville Parks & Recreation through programming fees.

Stehr said the intention is to eventually pay all naturalists this way as programming fees are a sustainable way to pay the parks staff without impacting the parks department’s actual budget.

The Zionsville Town Council will have a first reading of the budget at its Sept. 21 meeting.

DISPATCHES  Arson hearing moved to October — A hearing on whether a teenager accused of lighting a downtown Zionsville home on fire will be tried in adult court was moved to October. Prosecutors have requested to try the 18 year old, who was 17 at the time of the alleged crime, as an adult. A hearing was scheduled Aug. 27 but it was continued. The fire was at the Kogan Antiques and Lighting Store. A probable cause affidavit stated the suspect admitted to others that he lit an Israeli flag on fire that hung on the home.

 Feasibility study sought for Carpenter Nature Preserve — The Zionville Parks and Recreation Department is accepting proposals for a feasibility study for the newly opened Carpenter Nature Preserve. The Zionsville Parks Foundation, which will fund most of the study, approved the department to seek proposals. The study is meant to evaluate the nature preserve and a future nature center for educational programming.

Town plans 2 plazas for Main Street

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Two more public gathering spaces are eyed for the Village.

The Town of Zionsville plans to construct two “pop-up plazas” along Main Street, according to Deputy Mayor Justin Hage.

The Brick Street Pop-Up Plaza will just be south of the Scoop and west of the Baker’s House on the site of a former house. It’s a public-private partnership whereby the property owner will lease the land to the town, Hage said.

A rendering shows trees, multiple types of seating, tables, landscaping and a mural screen fence. Hage said it could be used as extra seating for local businesses, like the Scoop, as well as during the Zionsville Farmers Market.

Tax increment financing funds will be used to revitalize the space. The Zionsville Redevelopment Commission voted Aug. 25 to use TIF funds to support the project.

“I think it’s a great example of a way we can reinvest some of that increment that has accumulated and be able to bring some infrastructure, and again, some public opportunity to enjoy this area,” Hage said.

Hage said a lease is still being worked out with the property owner but will likely be for five to 10 years.

the space and make it more friendly for socializing.

The redevelopment commission approved spending $230,000 in tax increment funds on the projects.

A TIF district is an area of land where increases in property tax revenue are captured by a municipality for economic development.

“These are relatively economical ways to bring public spaces to the forefront, be able to, again, leverage our tax increment finance to have infrastructure to benefit the businesses, benefit the residents, and benefit our visitors with outdoor spaces,” Hage said.

SullivanMunce Cultural Center’s GhostWalk returns for a 24th year, featuring actors telling stories of historic Zionsville. The 45-minute walking tour through the Village will feature up to eight different vignettes from local history.

The fall tradition is a way for visitors to learn about the people, places, legends and stories that have shaped the town. The route and stories change each year, so those who have attended before will likely hear something new.

The project will cost about $12.6 million and be financed through a few different means. More than $7 million in bonds will cover most of the project.

Other funds will come from existing cash the town has as well as leftover bond money from 2019. Some of the cash is from sewer charges.

George Lewis, the town’s engineering supervisor, said the upgrades are needed because it is hard to find parts for some equipment because of age. The improvements also will help the wastewater plant operate more efficiently, he said.

Additionally, Lewis said South Village has a capacity of 2 million gallons per day, but actual daily average intake is 1.2 million.

Fund supports caregivers

By Piper Bailey piper@youarecurrent.com For more than seven years, Meghann York watched her mother battle lymphoma and saw firsthand how cancer affects an entire family, including the caregivers who put their own needs aside.

“They can’t really take care of themselves because they feel like the other person is the one really going through it,” York said.

When Pam York died in 2023, her family asked for donations in lieu of flowers to go to a memorial fund established in her honor.

That experience eventually inspired Meghann to find a way to support other families facing cancer.

The Resilience and Renewal program was launched with a $20,000 donation from the Pam York Memorial Fund and began serving patients in June. It is a partnership between the Boone County Cancer Society, Effie Massage and The Cabin Counseling & Resource Center in Zionsville to provide free holistic health services, including counseling, massages, haircuts and pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, to cancer patients and their caregivers.

York’s role as a board member of The Cabin inspired her idea to use her mother’s fund to help other patients and caregivers and led her to reach out to Effie Massage about its preexisting programs for cancer patients.

Cancer patients and their caregivers who live in Boone County can apply for the Resilience and Renewal program with a form signed by their doctor or social worker verifying their diagnosis. Services are provided at the Boone County Cancer Society’s office at 1208 N. Lebanon St. in Lebanon.

“You can’t be the best caregiver possible if you’re not taking care of yourself,” York said. “I would hope they don’t hesitate to take (advantage) of these services, both for themselves (and so) they can be there for the person they love even more.”

New office building OK’d

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Speed drive manufacturer Dart Controls plans to build an additional facility on its property on 106th Street.

The Zionsville Plan Commission approved a development plan Aug. 17 for a 39,525-square-foot office and warehouse building at 5000 W. 106th St. Paperwork filed with the town indicates it will be a multitenant building.

The facility will be on the north part of the Dart Controls property, which has sat undeveloped for decades. Dart Controls, which makes speed motor drives, controls and accessories for electric motors, has been in Zionsville since 1963.

The plan commission granted an architecture waiver because of the sightlines of the building — it cannot be seen from 106th Street.

The company did not respond to an inquiry about the project.

Youth hoopers win title

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com A stellar season highlighted by 40 wins against only three losses was capped with a buzzer-beating basket to win a national title for a group of Zionsville middle school girls.

The Indiana Girls Basketball 2034 team won an AAU basketball national championship in June, knocking off three of the top teams in the nation in the largest tournament of its kind in Hamilton, Ohio.

Coley Norman coached the team that consisted of nine girls, including five from Zionsville: Monroe Norman, Lydia Rieken, Vivian Hains, Spencer White and Charlotte Evankovich.

“They have a lot of love for the game, and that’s the most important thing,” Coley Norman said.

Norman said being a great teammate and staying positive were emphasized throughout the season.

“I think the success really was because of the culture and the communication the girls (had) throughout the season,” he said. “They started to

communicate on the floor and become coaches.”

The team played in the toughest division in the national tournament which drew more than 200 teams. The girls won eight tournaments over the course of the season.

“We wanted to play the best,” Norman said.

Other team members were Cora Dell from Westfield; Alyssa Harrington from Fishers; Blakeleigh Leisure from Tipton; and Ellie Kinnett from Franklin.

Child care support expands news@currentnoblesville.com Child Care Answers, a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening early care and education across central Indiana, has announced the rollout of its new strategic plan, Rise Forward.

The plan marks a new chapter for the organization following the sunset of its longstanding child care resource and referral contract with the state of Indiana’s Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning.

As part of the new plan, CCA will expand hands-on support for child care professionals to Hamilton, Hendricks, Boone and Shelby counties. Child care resource specialists in each county will serve as connectors for child care professionals, family-facing organizations, employers and community partners to help local programs navigate resources and strengthen operations.

“By bringing dedicated specialists back into Hamilton and Hendricks counties, expanding our work there and introducing our work in Boone and Shelby counties, we are creating opportunities for child care profession-

als in these communities to have someone in their corner who understands both the local landscape and the bigger picture,” stated Millie Smith, CCA’s executive director.

CCA also is seeking additional funding to bring the model to more central Indiana communities, aiming to build a framework that counties can adopt and adapt to fit their child care landscape.

CCA also recently launched the Central Indiana Child Care Alliance in Hamilton and Boone counties. The Alliance gives family child care home programs access to coaching and shared fiscal, marketing and HR tools to reduce costs and build sustainability.

“The Alliance takes some of that weight off their shoulders so they can spend more time doing what they love — caring for children and supporting families,” stated Julie Carey, CCA’s shared services director.

Brain, spine office underway news@youarecurrent.com A new neurosurgical practice in Whitestown celebrated a construction milestone last month with a topping-out ceremony, which marked the placement of the final structural beam.

Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine is constructing a 12,000-squarefoot facility at 5993 Perry Worth Rd. in Whitestown. It will have 14 clinic rooms, a pain procedure room and onsite X-ray services. The new site will serve Whitestown and surrounding communities in Boone County and beyond.

“This milestone represents much more than the progress of a building,” said Rebecca Ruegg Cowan, chief operating officer at Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine. “It represents our continued commitment to making exceptional brain and spine care more accessible to the patients and communities we serve.”

Permit activity stable news@youarecurrent.com The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis recently reported that single-family building permit activity across central Indiana remained stable through July 2026, with 978 permits issued compared to 969 in July 2025.

The nine-county region recorded 6,409 permits year-to-date in 2026, a 3 percent increase from 6,225 permits at the same time in 2025, according to a news release.

The results come as national single-family construction slows. Nationally, the National Association of Home Builders reports single-family permitting was down 4.2 percent yearover-year through June, with declines reported across all four regions.

“Central Indiana continues to demonstrate resilience even as builders and buyers navigate a challenging housing environment,” stated Chris Hancock, CEO of BAGI. “We are encouraged to see the region remain ahead of last year’s permit pace through July, particularly as national

data continues to reflect the impact of affordability and construction cost pressures.”

NAHB reported builder confidence edged up one point to 35 in August but remained below the neutral threshold of 50. Elevated mortgage rates, construction costs and broader economic uncertainty continue to weigh on the market.

“The strength we are seeing in portions of central Indiana reinforces the continued demand for new housing in our region,” Hancock stated. “Creating more opportunities to build and maintain a healthy housing supply will continue to be critical as our communities grow.”

 State Court of Appeals upholds ruling — The conviction of a Richmond man by a Boone County judge was upheld by the Indiana Court of Appeals.

Superior Court I Judge Matthew Kincaid sentenced Evan Geeslin to three years in prison on conspiracy to commit sexual misconduct against a minor in August 2025. Geeslin was arrested after an undercover child predator operation.

He communicated with an undercover officer who he thought was a 14-yearold girl. Geeslin argued he should have been given a competency exam before trial. The appeals court unanimously determined Geeslin had the ability to understand the proceedings.  Volunteers sought for reading program — Boone County Mentoring Partnership is looking for volunteers for its ReadUP program, a literacy initiative that pairs adults and third graders in Lebanon elementary schools together to help the students with reading. 73rd Fall Festival set for Sept. 11-13

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com The Zionsville Lions Club’s biggest event of the year, and what is often rated as the best event in town, returns Sept. 11-13 at Lions Park.

This year’s Fall Festival has an “Out of this World” theme focusing on outer space. Attendees can expect a well-attended parade, plenty of family-friendly activities throughout the weekend, the 21-years-and-older Lions Lounge and a car show.

The Fall Festival kicks off the evening of Sept. 11 with the VIP Carnival for children with special needs and their families. The inclusive event is meant to give children with disabilities a carnival experience.

“It’s at their pace,” Fall Festival Chairman Tim Reinhart said.

The carnival is from 6 to 11 p.m. and draws families from across Indiana. A free dinner is provided.

Sept. 12 will be the biggest day of the festival. Reinhart said more than 10,000 people are expected to attend on the Saturday of Fall Festival. The day starts with the parade at 10 a.m.

The parade heads down Mulberry Street to Ash Street then Main Street.

There will be about 80 entries in the parade.

“Half the community is in the parade and the other half is watching,” Reinhart said. “It really does feel that way.”

Headlining the parade are Grand Marshals Jim and Nancy Carpenter.

The local philanthropists donated the

land that became Carpenter Nature Preserve, which opened earlier this year.

New this year is the 9/11 Field of Honor, marking the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the U.S. The Lions Club, through a Discover Boone County grant, placed 2,997 flags representing each person who died from the attacks.

Flags have special ribbons around them recognizing first responders who died.

Carnival rides by Poor Jack’s Carnival will be from noon to 11 p.m. Sept. 12 and noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 13. Wristband day — $25 for unlimited rides — is Sept.

The Zionsville Fire Department will have a demonstration at 3 p.m. Sept.

12 featuring firefighter survival techniques. There also will be a bite demonstration from 4 to 4:45 p.m. presented by the Zionsville Police Department with K-9s Mika and Ski. Mayor John Stehr said he’s participating in the demonstration.

Lions Lounge opens at 5 p.m. Sept.

12 with a trivia contest. The first 20 participants get free entry into the lounge.

The beer garden will have a live band — the Impalas, which plays music from the 1970s through the 90s — and beer on tap and wine. The Impalas will perform from 7 to 11 p.m.

The Scoop, Greek’s Pizzaria, Georgia’s Kitchen, Red Barn Elephant Ears and Norvell’s BBQ highlight this year’s food options.

The American Dream Car show will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 13.

Fall Festival is free to attend; however, it costs $8 to park at Lions Park.

CONSERVATION COMMITMENT Carpenters to serve as grand marshals for Fall Festival parade

By Kaitlin Fallowfield news@youarecurrent.com Nancy and Jim Carpenter will serve as the grand marshals for the Zionsville Lions Club’s Fall Festival Parade Sept. 12, thanks to their tireless work in conservation.

The service club nominated the couple after their dedication to restoring nature resulted in the Carpenter Nature Preserve, a 215-acre site that was once home to the Wolf Run Golf Club. Zionsville Lions Club member Todd Settle said he nominated the Carpenters because their shared values for the public good align with the club’s, and the nature preserve is a perfect example.

“Their service of the community is very out front,” he said. “We’re tickled to have them as marshals of the parade.”

Settle called the Carpenters “stalwarts of the Zionsville community for many years.”

Jim and Nancy Carpenter, founders of the Wild Birds Unlimited business, have lived in Zionsville since 1987. The couple raised their two daughters and have remained in the community, enjoying Boone County’s natural wildlife through birdwatching and hiking with their dog, Joy. Both biologists, they said their love for nature was instilled in them by their grandparents.

When the Wolf Run Golf Club property came up for sale, there was a proposal to turn the acreage along Eagle Creek into a mixed-use development with 360 single-family homes.

Nancy Carpenter said they couldn’t let that happen. They toured the property with then-Zionsville Mayor Emily Styron, who shared their vision for a public park.

“Jim and I got very excited about it and said, ‘OK, we’ll buy it before developers buy it,’” Nancy Carpenter said.

The couple purchased the property, spending $5.5 million of their own money to preserve it.

“We kept trails mowed throughout the property. We chainsawed trees that fell on the trails. We put up bluebird boxes. We just tried to encourage nature, with pollinator meadows and things like that,” Nancy Carpenter said.

“Well, you know, Mother Nature took her course, and it just grew and grew.

Trees started growing, and you could really see how this could be a beautiful nature park.”

The couple sold the property in 2023 to Zionsville for $4.52 million, on the condition the land remain a public park in perpetuity. The town became the recipient of the largest single infusion of conservation funding in state history from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources when a $3 million grant through the Next Level Conservation Trust was awarded to the preserve. The DNR also awarded a $500,000 grant from its Land and Water Conservation fund.

Although their conservation efforts have benefited the local community in spades, their resume extends far beyond Boone County.

The couple is involved with the Hoosier National Forest and Indiana Forest Alliance. They have raised money for the Amos Butler Audubon Society to purchase thousands of acres in Costa Rica for conservation. They bought around 48 acres of land in Brown County they then donated to the Nature Conservancy to become part of Hoosier National Forest. Nancy Carpenter said they own 1,000 acres in Colorado, which they lease to ranchers for cattle grazing.

“We keep it, and we don’t let it be hunted heavily, so the animals, especially during hunting season, the elk and the deer and the antelope, feel comfortable,” she said. “It’s kind of a resting

place.”

Styron and Nancy Carpenter founded the Zionsville Parks Foundation, which is working with the public parks department to study and design Phases 2 and 3 of the preserve. The Zionsville Parks Foundation raised more than $1 million for the nature preserve, and fundraising continues. The nature preserve opened in May. The couple said they were surprised to be nominated for the parade. Although they are not members of the local Lions Club, which is the largest in the state with more than 200 active members, they said they admire the club’s work in building and maintaining Lions Park.

“That park right in the middle of town has just been fabulous,” Jim Carpenter said.

The grand marshals will lead the parade at 10 a.m. Sept.

MORE ON CARPENTER NATURE PRESERVE Work is ongoing at Carpenter Nature Preserve — and will continue in the coming years — as a second phase is planned that will include more preservation efforts and, eventually, more infrastructure, including trails, so visitors can enjoy more of the property.

The Indiana Stream and Wetland Mitigation Program plans to restore up to 10,000 linear feet of land along Eagle Creek and tributaries within the property. The DNR will also help take care of the area for 10 years.

Children with disabilities and their families will get first dibs at enjoying the Zionsville Lions Club’s Fall Festival.

The 19th annual VIP Carnival is from 6 to 11 p.m. Sept. 11. Special needs children and their families enjoy a free meal and free rides throughout the night. Dinner will provided by Chick-fil-A and the Lions Club.

“It’s at their pace,” Fall Festival Chairman Tim Reinhart said.

The Lions Club expects more than 2,000 reservations. The event draws people from across the state.

“We have people come as far as northwest Indiana, Fort Wayne,” Reinhart said, as well as Chicago.

Live animal demonstrations by Silly Safari are also part of the VIP Carnival. Reinhart said the carnival is meant to give children with disabilities a true festival experience.

“It’s made just for them,” he said. “Those … hours, the kids are able to enjoy a festival.”

A capital campaign for a Lions Park expansion will go live during the Zionsville Lions Club’s Fall Festival Sept.

11-13.

The volunteer organization will make public its plans to raise $2.6 million for the development of 5 additional acres at Lions Park. It purchased the additional acreage in 2024, located north of the pickleball courts.

More open space is eyed for the park.

An area called the Great Lawn, a large, open green space, is considered for the new land. It would be a place for picnic tables, walking paths and outdoor activities like flying kites, according to Fall Festival Chairman Tim Reinhart.

Reinhart said the Lions Club is still fleshing out the full plan but includes removing invasive plants from the new area as well as adding new trees. The club has held sessions with the community to receive input in what residents want in the park.

A needs assessment showed residents and park users want to see the park grow to accommodate people of all ages and abilities. Respondents said they would like to see additional programs, events and amenities that appeal to

teens and adults, especially those without children.

About $1.6 million of the total campaign is eyed for park upgrades. Phase 1 included improving the shelterhouse, which has been well received.

“The rentals for the shelterhouse exploded,” Reinhart said.

Another $1 million will go toward a legacy fund meant for yearly upkeep.

“It’s definitely a six-digit figure we spend each year on upkeep,” Reinhart said.

Lions Park is privately owned by the Lions Club.

“We are all very proud of the park,” Reinhart said.

Middle school band becomes vital part of parade

By Alex McCarthy alex@youarecurrent.com Through the years, the involvement of middle school musicians has become one of the highlights of the Fall Festival Parade, both for the students and the community.

When Josh Weirich, the seventh and eighth grade band director at Zionsville Middle School, arrived at the school 26 years ago, he wanted to find a way for the band to become more involved in the community. He quickly identified the annual Fall Festival Parade as an opportunity. That first year, there were about 75 students in the middle school band. That number has grown to about 350 students between Zionsville Middle School and Zionsville West Middle School.

12. Marching onto the bricks of Main Street is always a special experience for Weirich and the students. Weirich recognizes faces of former band members in the crowd, along with friends and family.

“It’s kind of a magical feeling because it feels like the entire town is there,” Weirich said. “When you enter downtown and step onto the brick street and the crowd is lined up on either side, I feel like I’m part of this Norman Rockwell painting. It’s like the best of America right there. People are waving flags and cheering, and there’s big crowds.

And so one thing they never forget is the crowds and the enthusiasm that we get when we’re marching all the way from the high school to downtown.”

Preparation for that moment starts about six months in advance when Weirich and the other band directors select the music they’ll play that year. The other directors include Chris Murray and Evan Schroeder from Zionsville Middle School and Liz Leatherberry and Candi Granlund from Zionsville West Middle School.

For this year’s “Out of This World” theme, they considered songs from classic space films and television like “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.” Young students might not feel as connected to those older movies, though, so the directors selected music from the 2014 action film “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

The directors also have to match the pace of the song to a comfortable marching pace. It can’t be too slow and

can’t be too fast. After they settle on the song, the two middle school bands begin practicing the song separately. They send each other recordings of their performances to keep track of each other,

but they don’t play it together until an hour before the parade.

Tim Reinhart, chairman of the festival, said seeing the students perform is a vital aspect of the parade.

“The tent is completely full, standing room only for that,” Reinhart said.

“This is the highlight of the afternoon.”

Parade integral to Fall Festival theme

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Whether it’s cartoons or cowboys or a night at the movies, the determination for the Zionsville Lions Club’s Fall Festival theme always connects to the main event: the downtown parade.

Tim Reinhart, chairman of the Fall Festival, said it’s a year-round project for the committee that selects each year’s theme. The 73rd Fall Festival, set for Sept. 11-13, is going into space this year with “Out of This World.”

“We try to come up with a fun theme that people can easily decorate the parade floats and costumes,” Reinhart said.

So, expect aliens, astronauts and other astronomical figures at this year’s parade, set for 10 a.m. Sept. 12. The route starts at Zionsville Community High School and ends on Main Street.

Reinhart said the parade has about 80 entries.

said the timing was merely coincidence for the Fall Festival theme. Themes are typically set a year in advance and announced at the previous year’s event.

Reinhart said there hasn’t been a decision yet.

“We’re going to have to start recycling some of these. It’s hard to keep coming up with new ideas,” he said.

ZCHS graduate enjoys Miss Fall Festival reign

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Shaylee Barnes has won several competition titles through the Miss Indiana system, but it took some time to get one she really coveted.

The 2021 Zionsville High School graduate had always wanted to be Miss Fall Festival because it’s her hometown crown.

She first competed for Miss Fall Festival Teen at age 12.

She was unsuccessful at least three times in the teen portion and one time as Miss Fall Festival before finally winning it in 2025.

“It took me 10 years, but I finally won,” Barnes said. “Getting to represent Zionsville at the state competition was amazing, because I got to talk about my hometown. I know so much about it, because I’ve lived here almost my whole life. It definitely has a special place in my heart more than other titles. But I am always grateful for any opportunity I’ve had.”

Barnes, who has competed in Miss Indiana five times and Miss Indiana’s Teen three times, graduated from Indiana University in 2025. She is working on a master’s for a biomedical science degree at Marian University.

“It’s an accelerated one-year program that will help me get into Marian’s doctor of osteopathic medicine program,” she said.

Barnes, who will participate in the Fall Festival parade Sept. 12 and all three days for Fall Festival, will then help crown the Miss Fall Festival Oct. 3 at Hoosier Village Retirement Community in Zionsville. That winner will advance to the Miss Indiana competition in June 2027.

“I’ve gone to a lot of the Lions Club meetings, which was so special because they’ve always supported the Miss Indiana girls so much, so it was nice to be able to work with them,” Barnes said.

“I just went to their Fall Festival kickoff meeting and got to sing there. I went to a couple of their events in the (Lions Club) park. It’s always fun and rewarding to walk around the park and meet people and also see people I interact with in my daily life. I get to see them at the Miss Fall Festival and tell them what that opportunity and experience

“I got to see a lot of kids I teach at Village Dance Studio (in Zionsville),” she said. “They got to see me in a different aspect of my life, so that’s always so fun.”

Gus Macker tourney to support cancer research

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournaments always evoke special memories for Dr. Greg Durm.

“I played in Gus Macker mostly when I was probably between 10 and 15 years old,” Durm said. “I grew up in Elwood, I’ve almost been a lifelong Hoosier. I played in Gus Mackers all over the area.

Don’t think I ever had the opportunity to win one, but certainly had a great time over many years. I played in another one with cousins when I was a bit older, but I don’t think I’ve played in a Gus Macker in a couple of decades. I think it’s actually taken a bit of a hiatus in central Indiana.”

Durm, a thoracic oncologist and Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center researcher, is helping to bring it back. The Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament is set for Oct. 3-4 at Pacers Athletic Center in Westfield. The tournament is sponsored by Republic Airways.

Proceeds from the tournament will support research at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“It’s an iconic tournament and we’re happy to have the opportunity to collaborate with them,” said Durm, who played for Elwood High School.

As a clinical researcher, Durm said he mostly runs and designs clinical trials.

“We were trying to think of ways to improve funding for cancer research because ultimately we just want to provide the best care for our patients and really kind of drive innovation of cancer research in the future,” he said. “So, we wanted to think of ways we could do this to collaborate with the community and engage the community in a way that was unique and true to Indiana.”

Durm said basketball seemed the ideal way to do that.

“In Indiana, basketball is in our blood,” he said. “It’s our culture. We felt this is a perfect opportunity to merge cancer research and basketball.”

Durm presented the idea to the fundraising department and it came up with the plan to partner with Gus Macker.

Durm, who is serving as honorary head coach for the tournament, said the response has been positive.

particularly people who are playing for loved ones, family, friends, colleagues, just to support them and come out for them,” he said. “I’m confident we’re going to get enough people and I’m hopeful that this will be an annual event if we can get enough support for this year.”

Durm, 43, said he is trying to put a team together and determining if he will have time to play.

“I’m also trying to see if my kids, if they have the ability to, will play as well,” Durm said.

Durm reached the 1,000-point scoring milestone in high school. He had wanted to play in college but couldn’t pass up a full ride scholarship to the University of Notre Dame.

“I still play basketball now once a week, mostly with friends my age,” he said.

Durm said in the future they might look to have the tournament outdoors where Gus Macker tournaments are usually played.

“But in October, the weather can be unpredictable, so we decided on indoors,” he said.

The event, which has room for 100 teams, is open to anyone age 8 and older with four-person teams. There are men’s and women’s divisions. Registration is open until Sept. 14. To register, visit cancer.iu.edu/gusmacker.

Trying arson suspect as adult misguided Editor, In the case of the fire at Kogan Antiques on Main Street in Zionsville, I see the Boone County prosecutor is interested in trying the young man who has been arrested as an adult and not a juvenile.

Why, I ask myself, why?

The individual was 17 years old when he allegedly committed the crime, and has since turned 18. Many of us know it takes until about the age of 25 for the brain to be fully mature — particularly the prefrontal cortex which handles executive functions like decision-making and impulse control.

Surely, this young man — if he is guilty — did an awful thing, especially if his action was driven by hatred of Jews.

However, I would bet my last dollar his intention was to burn the flag and not the whole building.

Does trying this young man as an adult best serve the community and the individual? Or will it insert him into an often callous and cruel criminal justice system, and pretty much ruin his life?

I have no idea if the owner of the building which was burned feels strongly about trying the young man as a juvenile or an adult, but I would ask both of you to demonstrate mercy instead of taking what may be a more-popular position.

What decision would you hope a prosecutor would make if this was your son?

Town should speak up on LEAP water Editor, Jeni Jenkins was right in her letter. Zionsville can’t stay quiet about LEAP’s wastewater plans. Zionsville is still on the list of possible discharge sites, including near Carpenter Nature Preserve. Eagle Creek is where our drinking water comes from. This isn’t just Lebanon’s problem. It’s ours too.

Having a permit doesn’t mean the water is safe. It just means a company followed some rules. Lebanon Utilities will do most of the testing itself, not the state. We still don’t know who all will use LEAP or what will be in their wastewater.

Zionsville doesn’t have to wait to act. The Zionsville Town Council should: 1. Speak up and ask the town attorney to formally submit comments to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s water quality office, requesting outside testing and strict limits on harmful chemicals like PFAS before any permit is approved.

2. Ask Boone County and state health officials to study the risk. County, local and

state health departments can look at impacts beyond IDEM’s pollutant rules but need a formal request from the town or our state legislators to act.

3. Start testing our water now, before anything is discharged, working with the Boone County Health Department and state-certified labs. Testing should happen multiple times a year. Even theoretical problems need to be baselined and caught early.

4. The town should get a cost estimate from certified labs and put it to residents. A steady, independent testing program would cost our town a modest amount for recurring samples throughout a year.

That’s a small price for real protection we control, not just trusting someone else’s word.

Our leaders have a choice: ask hard questions now, or explain later why they didn’t.

The town council should place this on an agenda so residents can be heard before a decision is made for us.

Music video celebrates Zionsville’s talent

By Alex McCarthy alex@youarecurrent.com On Aug. 30 in Zionsville, people who happened to be out on Main Street were treated to a free live performance. A young girl in a gold-colored birthday hat and her family gazed at the performance, leftovers still in their hands from dinner. Zionsville Mayor John Stehr was out walking his labradoodle Johnny Cash when he stopped by to watch.

They had front-row seats for the filming of a music video for “Brick Street Baby,” an original song written

by Dan Discenza to honor Zionsville.

The video will premiere at 5 p.m. Sept.

12 in the Entertainment Tent at the Zionsville Fall Festival, Discenza said.

At the front of the group were 13-year-old performers Gavin Tedja and Piper Lageman, leading a crowd of a few dozen participants through the music video’s choreography. Everyone wore forest green shirts to match Zionsville Community High School’s colors.

Discenza runs a social media channel called Zionsville Today, which highlights local residents. He got the idea earlier this year to create a song for the town. It took him a couple months, during which he cycled from an old-fashioned Broadway number to a rap song to what it ended up being — a Justin Bieber-esque pop song that Tedja could sing.

“A lot of it came from knowing the talent that we have at ‘Zionsville Today’ and in the town at large,” Discenza said.

That talent was evident Sunday.

Discenza is a film producer who has worked in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville. His sister, Julia Discenza, works as a director in New York and Michigan and came to town for the shoot. Lageman grew up in Hollywood, where she was a child actor before moving to Zionsville in 2020.

“I actually prefer living in a small town,” Lageman said. “Everyone is so much nicer. You’ll just be walking

down the street and someone will smile at you.”

The music video was a communitywide effort. Numerous local businesses sponsored the project and allowed Discenza to shoot video all over town.

Erica Carpenter, owner of Fivethirty Home and president of Main Street Zionsville, helped secure the block of Main Street for a couple hours of filming. She also appeared in the video and said she’s pleased at the way the video highlights how special Zionsville is.

“Main Street is more than just the bricks,” Carpenter stated in an email.

“It’s what makes Zionsville unmistakably Zionsville. That’s why I love the ‘Brick Street Baby’ video and seeing it come to life.”

Young cheerleaders from the Zionsville Youth Football League made a mark on the video with their exuberance and ability to quickly learn the choreography. Their coaches, including Rebekah Butler, danced alongside

them and said it was a great way for the children to share their talents.

“It’s fun to show town pride and teach the kids that they live in a really awesome place and they should be proud of it,” Butler said.

Discenza, who moved to Zionsville about a year and a half ago, said he’s been amazed at how much Zionsville has to share. He hopes the video, which will be on “Zionsville Today’s” social media channels about a week after the Fall Festival premiere, goes viral so more people can see how much the city has to offer.

“I’ve lived in New York, lived in LA, lived in Nashville, lived in all these places that are big, exciting cities, and they don’t even really compare to the feeling of living in a Zionsville, to be in this really close, intimate community where you feel like it’s beautiful and really well taken care of,” Discenza said. “It’s a paradise in a lot of ways.”

Brownsburg graduate set for Opera in the Park

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Ron Dukes started out as a football player at Brownsburg High School.

However, the 2013 BHS graduate soon discovered his true calling as a singer.

“You have to take a fine arts credit to graduate, so I took choir,” he said.

“I ended up really liking singing. Then I got a scholarship to take three voice lessons the following winter. That was my first real exposure to classical music.

I didn’t even know you could major in opera and make any sort of career with opera. So, that was really eye-opening for me. That was a turning point where I decided I could make money with my voice and be an opera singer.”

Dukes will perform Sept. 11 in Indianapolis Opera’s Opera in the Park. The free concert begins at 7 p.m at MacAllistar Amphitheater at Garfield Park in Indianapolis. Gates open at 6 p.m. The concert is hosted by soprano Angela Brown and conductor Alfred Savia.

“Being featured as a guest artist in a company from where I’m from is always an honor and a pleasure in itself,” Dukes said. “I’m really looking forward to performing with Angela Brown. Her career speaks for itself and singing with a singer of that caliber is an honor. All of my friends are in the chorus, so I get to hang put with my friends and make great music.”

Dukes, a bass singer, will perform a duet from “Porky and Bess ” with Brown, an international opera singer who lives in Indianapolis.

Dukes is based in Greenwood but travels to perform with opera groups across the U.S. In the past, he had mostly been in chorus work with Indy Opera.

“My first role debut with Indy Opera is in ‘La Traviata,’ which was one of the first productions I was involved with (Indy Opera), so it’s kind of full circle moment,” said Dukes, who will play Doctor Grenvil, which Indy Opera will present Nov. 13-15 at The Tarkington at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel Joseph McBrayer will participate in an Opera in the Park concert for the third time. He previously performed at the concert in 2019 while he was at Indiana University and again as a Indy Opera resident artist in 2020

McBrayer said he enjoys collaborating with Indianapolis Opera General Director David Starkey and Savia.

“I’m such a fan of Angela Brown and it’s great to be on stage with her and hear her sing,” McBrayer said.

McBrayer will sing an aria from “La Traviata.”

“I did that aria in grad school at IU and I’ve done the show a couple of times,” he said.

In addition, he’ll sing “Is Anybody There?” from the musical “1776.”

“It’s a bit more Golden Age musical theater than operatic, but I know the direction we are wanting to take with it – a bit more operatic than how they would do it on the Broadway recording,” he said.

McBrayer will return to Indy Opera to perform as Sancho in “Man of La Mancha,” which is set for April 30 and May 1, 2027, at The Tobias Theater at Newfields in Indianapolis.

McBrayer is based in Milwaukee, where he performs with Florentine Opera and Brew City Opera.

“My wife, Hayley, who is also a signer, is from the (Milwaukee) area,” he said.

“She was one of Indy Opera’s resident artists in 2020.”

McBrayer said Opera in the Park exposes a new crowd to opera.

“It’s a nice thing for families to do and there might be a few familiar tunes that people have actually heard before,” he said. “You don’t have to have to get dressed up. I know plenty of people don’t get dressed up to go to the opera anymore, and I think that’s fine. But there’s still that stigma that you have to put on a three-piece suit, put on your best and pay a lot of money to go to a theater to experience opera, and you don’t. Opera in the Park is a great example of that and I’m happy to be part of it again.”

The annual St. George Orthodox Church Middle Eastern Festival celebrates the Arab heritage of the church founders, featuring Middle Eastern food, music, dancing and more.

This year’s 29th annual festival in Fishers is set for Sept. 18-20, with most activity taking place in the church parking lot. Father Anthony Yazge said a DJ will spin tunes Sept. 18 and a live band will perform Sept. 19 and 20.

Throughout the festival, baked desserts like traditional baklava, kanafe and cookies will be available for purchase in the church basement, which also will house vendors offering goods and clothing from the Middle East.

A children’s play area and outdoor food tents will be set up in the church parking lot. Food tents will offer menu items like shawarma — marinated chicken served in a pita with pickles and a creamy garlic sauce — and kafta, which is ground beef mixed with parsley, onions and spices, also served in a pita. The booths also will have the popular lamb shanks, falafel and stuffed grape leaves, along with honey balls — fried dough served with sweet toppings.

In previous years, the festival included professional dabke dancers. This year, though, Yazge said the church’s dancers have gained enough experience to do all the performances themselves.

“We have a number of dance troupes

that’ll be dancing Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” Yazge said, adding that the festival program will be available on the church website about a week before the event. “That will also list the schedule of the dancing and the performing and everything that’ll happen throughout the festival.”

The festival is free to attend and kicks off at 5 p.m. Sept. 18 at the church, 10748 E. 116th St. The event opens again at noon Sept. 19, running through 10 p.m., and wraps up Sept. 20, with activities from noon to 4 p.m.

Parking will be at the nearby Hoosier Road Elementary School, 11300 E. 121st St. A shuttle will bring people to and from the festival.

Yacht Rock Revue to cover classics at Ruoff Music Center

“This is our biggest tour to date, which seems to defy logic given our age and the number of years we’ve been doing this,” said Nicholas Niespodziani, the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist, “But it just keeps getting bigger and it’s really fun. We’ve expanded in some places to venues that are much bigger than I ever imagined, including Ruoff, which I knew in my days in Indiana as Deer Creek.”

Niespodziani, who grew up in Columbus, graduated from Columbus East High School in 1996. He met his business partner and co-leader Peter Olson in fourth grade. Along with vocals, Olson plays guitar, keyboards and percussion.

“We’ve been friends ever since,” Niespodzian said. “We both went to Indiana University. We have four IU grads in the band, so our Indiana ties are strong and we definitely feel that love every time we come back home.”

Niespodziani and Olson formed Yacht Rock Revue in Atlanta in 2007. They were members of Y-O-U, an indie pop rock band that started at IU. “We got some songs and commercials and went on some tours, but never really got our big break,” Niespodziani said.

“So, when Yacht Rock started, Y-O-U

kind of got folded into that vibe.”

Although Yacht Rock Revue has a few original songs, its setlist is mostly covers of rock classics by groups and performers such as Christopher Cross, Seals & Crofts, Hall & Oates, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers.

“The demand seems to be inelastic for this music,” Niespodziani said. “I think partly because the guys are retiring, partly because the music is so great and timeless and just evokes a good time every time you hear it. And I think part of it is that our band is pretty unique in terms of the level of talent and the kind of commitment that we bring to this.”

Yacht Rock Revue has played a variety of venues this year.

He said the band has a large following in the Indianapolis area.

“It’s like a high school reunion for me,” Niespodziani said. “Even the kids who wanted to beat me up come see the show.”

Niespodziani said there is an acoustic set in the middle of the concert.

“Peter and I harken back to our high school days and usually in that little set, I throw in some things specific to the region that we’re playing in,” he said.

“So, I’ve got some good Indiana stuff planned for the Ruoff show.”

The band will include an original such as “Tropical Illusion.”

“We hope to catch their ear with ours, but when you are going up against 30 of the greatest songs ever written (it’s tough),” Niespodziani said. “Every other song would be like the encore for the band that we’re covering. So, it’s a tall order to throw our own (song) in there, but we do a little bit of it anywhere.”

What inspired these two homes, and how do they fit Wild Air’s “luxury meets nature” theme?

Wedgewood’s goal with the 2026 Home-A-Rama was to show consistent, efficient design solutions. This is a constant with Wedgewood and our focus on design was able to be enhanced with the location and theme of Wild Air and the overall feel of the community. Both homes bring the outdoors in, with a focus on the use of various materials, multiple places to entertain, while not losing sight of the main goal and how today’s family lives on a day to day basis.

How did Wild Air’s shared spaces (trails, dog park, fitness, coworking) influence your floor plans?

We focused, as we always do, on maximizing use not only of each individual lot that our home is built on, but how families live and entertain. Our designs this year encourage utilizing the outdoors. Whether that is physically being outside, or creating site lines and views of nature from virtually every part of the home.

What feature in each home are you most excited for visitors to see?

The overall spacious feeling of the two Wedgewood designs this year is critical to the foundation of what Wedgwood brings to every design encounter with our customers. We try to do our best to design intentionally and to utilize the entire space without having to overbuild or just add square footage to the homes. I truly am excited to see how customers react to the utilization of space.

What subtle detail in either home are you especially proud of?

For us at Wedgewood, yes, we take tremendous pride in what we build, where we build and how we build it. We have created tremendous partnerships over the years and that is a critical piece to what people can see and feel. But bigger than that, what customers don’t typically see until working with us in depth, is our team and true passion behind the scenes. It’s hard to experience what Wedgewood really means until you go through the detailed, customer focused process that we take tremendous pride in.

If you lived in either home, which room would you spend the most time in?

This has been a fun question to answer. Each time I have been in the home during the build and pre-show process, not only do I get different answers from the people I am walking with, but I find myself feeling differently each time as well. But in both cases, I can see the outdoor spaces and the integration into the way the home lives everyday is going to be a true talking point this year.

What are your favorite indoor-outdoor design elements?

Both Wedgewood homes in the 2026 Home-A-Rama push you to focus on the outdoor spaces. Whether you can physically be outside or simply enjoy the views, the feeling of Wild Air is solidified in our design and how the lines between nature and the indoors are blurred.

What inspired these two homes, and how do they fit Wild Air’s “luxury meets nature” theme?

We wanted the homes to have two very different personalities while both feeling at home in Wild Air. Keeneland (Lot 16, Stop 7) is a refined woodland retreat inspired by New England shingle-style architecture, while Marvie (Lot 24, Stop 2) is a warmer, more playful take on a classic Craftsman. Both are really about thoughtful design, comfortable luxury and creating a connection to the outdoors.

How did Wild Air’s shared spaces (trails, dog park, fitness, coworking) influence your floor plans?

Wild Air is very lifestyle-driven, and we wanted the homes to reflect that. We focused on spaces for gathering, wellness, working from home and spending time outdoors. Keeneland’s lower-level wellness space – with the gym, custom built-in sauna and cold plunge – is probably the clearest example of that.

What feature in each home are you most excited for visitors to see?

At Keeneland, we are excited for visitors to experience the way we took advantage of our wooded lot by creating a well-appointed outdoor living space. We have a large covered outdoor patio with motorized drop-down screens, a fireplace, built-in grill center and two seating areas. Beyond that is an uncovered patio with a hot tub and remote fire pit overlooking the woods. At Marvie, we love how so much personality is packed into a smaller footprint. We have gathering space for days, a porch swing overlooking the pond, and a cute reading nook in the loft to cozy up with a book.

What subtle detail in either home are you especially proud of?

The millwork at Keeneland. There are

so many little details that you may not immediately notice, but together they give the house so much character and make it feel established rather than brand new.

At Marvie, it is the way we tied in timeless Craftsman architecture both inside and out, while giving the home a very modern feel in the way it lives.

If you lived in either home, which room would you spend the most time in?

At Keeneland, it’s a toss-up between the kitchen/dining and outdoor living.

Both hold so many potentials for entertaining with the cathedral ceilings and ample space for eating, drinking and

relaxing with your friends and family. At Marvie, it would probably be the porch swing or reading nook.

What are your favorite indoor-outdoor design elements?

Both homes have wonderful outdoor living spaces with fire features. Retractable screens and large sliding doors allow you to invite nature inside or seamlessly flow from kitchen/living/dining to the outdoors. We also have an outdoor fountain in front of Keeneland, which is just heavenly for enjoying your morning coffee on the porch while greeting your neighbors.

What inspired these two homes, and how do they fit Wild Air’s “luxury meets nature” theme?

We wanted the two homes to feel distinct while reflecting the relaxed luxury that defines Wild Air. The home on Lot 22 was designed around comfortable main-level living, with an open kitchen, dining area and great room that connect directly to the covered porch. Lot 13 has a larger, family-focused layout, with additional bedrooms and a loft upstairs, along with generous gathering spaces throughout the home.

Both homes combine refined architecture and high-end finishes with natural materials, large windows and strong connections to the outdoors. They feel luxurious, but they’re also warm, comfortable and designed for everyday living.

How did Wild Air’s shared spaces (trails, dog park, fitness, coworking) influence your floor plans?

Wild Air encourages residents to be active, connected and engaged with the community, so we designed both homes to support that lifestyle. Each includes a private study for working from home, dedicated exercise space, functional mudroom areas and open gathering spaces where family and friends can come together.

The neighborhood amenities allow the homes to focus less on separating people and more on creating comfortable spaces that complement an active lifestyle.

What feature in each home are you most excited for visitors to see?

In Lot 22, I’m most excited for visitors to experience the connection between the great room, kitchen and covered rear porch. The sightlines and flow make the entire main level feel open and inviting.

The lower level is another highlight, with a family room, media lounge, game room and fitness area that make it a true extension of the home. In Lot 13, the kitchen and prep kitchen will be a major feature. They provide a beautiful central gathering space while keeping the working side of the kitchen organized. I also think visitors will appreciate the home’s four-car garage and the way the upstairs loft creates a separate living space for children or guests.

What subtle detail in either home are you especially proud of?

I’m especially proud of how carefully the transitions between spaces were planned. The homes feel open, but each room still has its own purpose and character. Details like the prep kitchen in Lot 13, the placement of the studies and mudrooms, and the way the windows frame outdoor views may not be the first things visitors notice, but they make a tremendous difference in how the homes live every day.

I would probably spend the most time in the great room and kitchen area. That is naturally where everyone gathers, whether you’re cooking, watching a game or entertaining friends. What are your favorite indoor-outdoor design elements?

The covered rear porches are my favorite elements because they feel like true outdoor rooms rather than additions to the house. Large windows and doors bring in natural light, preserve views and create an easy transition from the kitchen and great room to the porch. We also used natural colors, stone and warm architectural materials to help the homes feel connected to the Wild Air landscape.

The goal was to make the outdoor surroundings part of the experience from the moment you enter the home.

I’m proud of how intentionally the materials were selected and carried throughout both homes. The grain of the wood, the texture of the plaster, and the transitions between rooms may feel subtle, but together they give each home its character.
