FEMA administrator visits flood site

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Indiana municipalities rebuilding and recovering after recent severe floods might receive federal financial support sooner than initially expected.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is piloting a program that streamlines upfront payments to communities for eligible flood recovery projects in Indiana rather than reimbursing them for costs. FEMA Administrator Cameron Hamilton detailed the plan alongside Indiana Gov. Mike Braun and Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam at a press conference and disaster site tour Aug. 31 in Carmel.

The payments would be based on cost estimates rather than actual project costs. The program is expected to speed financial assistance to recovering communities and save taxpayer dollars in the long run.

“Generally speaking, the longer these disasters take, the more significant you find an escalation of cost,” Hamilton said. “Every 12 months, you have an escalation of 10 to 15 percent of recovery cost. That’s not serving your constituents. That’s not serving the American people best.”

Hamilton said it’s too early to know which projects will qualify for the pilot program. He encouraged local officials to thoroughly document damage so FEMA officials can quickly make an informed decision.

FEMA has previously used this model in select cases and will review its impact in Indiana to determine whether the program should expand, Hamilton said.

Braun said the storms and related flooding impacted more than half of Indiana’s 92 counties, which he described as “something we’ve never confronted before.” He said he spoke with President Donald Trump shortly after the worst of the flooding occurred Aug. 15 and was surprised to see a Major Disaster Declaration issued 10 days later.

Finkam thanked Braun, Trump and other elected officials for their efforts to assist Carmel in the aftermath of the flood.

“I’ve stood in backyards with people who’ve lived here for nearly 50 years, saying, ‘I’ve never seen it like this. I’ve never had this type of damage to my home, and I don’t know how I’m going to move forward,’” Finkam said. “The test pilot announced today is great news to our residents who are trying to figure out how they can rebuild and stay in Carmel, the place they love, and in many cases have grown up in and never left.”

Finkam said city officials were set to meet for an after-action report Sept. 4 to discuss their response to the crisis.

Resort-style community proposed at 106th, Illinois

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com First, he planned to build a three-story office building. Then, it was a senior apartment community. Now, developer Steve Pittman is proposing luxury apartments on 6 acres on the southwest corner of 106th and Illinois streets.

Carmel-based Pittman Partners and Indianapolis-based Millstone Ventures are working together to develop Venture at Meridian Trails, a 154-unit resort-style luxury apartment community. They are petitioning the City of Carmel for a zoning change to a planned unit development, meaning development standards would be specific to the site.

Pittman said his plans for the site changed as he realized age-restricted properties “were not leasing well.”

He said most people 55 and older are healthy and prefer to live in a community with tenants of all ages.

“What was happening in the age-restricted projects, they were becoming projects where people should have been in assisted living, but they were delaying going to assisted living,” Pittman said. “So, you go into an age-restricted project and many times you’d see people that had walkers and were on oxygen, and (potential tenants) want to live around other healthy, robust people.”

The detective traced the flagged content to Alte’s account and obtained a search warrant to search his devices.

Investigators discovered CSAM showing young girls, with at least one victim appearing to be only 1 or 2 years old, the affidavit states. They also found “hyper realistic” AI-generated images of naked, pregnant girls.

Alte admitted to investigators during a May interview that he has had an addiction to “amateur teen pornography” for 15 years and that he has been “scared to talk about the addiction or get help.”

Current contacted Caroline Knickrehm, an attorney representing Alte, for comment but did not receive a response.

Alte is charged with six counts of possession of child pornography and four counts of possession of child sex abuse material.

A bail review hearing is set for Sept.

9, and a jury trial is set for Dec. 7.

Mother-daughter duo take on ‘Amazing Race’

By Mark Ambrogi Mark@youarecurrent.com For Riley Tejcek and her mother, Ann-Marie Tejcek, “The Amazing Race” has always been must-see TV. “I’ve been a fan of the show forever,” said Riley, a 2015 Carmel High School graduate. “I’ve literally seen every single season. It’s just a great family show, but it’s a competitive show. My mom and I always said that our dream was to go on ‘The Amazing Race,’ and we talked about that forever.”

So, Riley, a U.S. Marine stationed in San Diego, applied a few years ago and didn’t hear back.

“I was stubborn enough as soon as I got back from deployment in Iraq (in November 2024), I said ‘Mom they’re casting again. Let’s give it another shot,’” said Riley, who had a baby boy last month. “Actually ending up hearing back this time was awesome.”

This time Riley was accepted and will appear on the 39th season of “The Amazing Race,” which begins Sept. 30 on CBS. Riley chose her mother over her father, John, and her sister, Delaney, as her partner.

“We get along really well and we’re both highly competitive, and we’ve got complementary styles in our approach to challenges and difficult things,” Ann-Marie said.

Riley said a mother-daughter team has never won before, and they wanted to make history.

The filming for Season 39 took place in 2025 between Sept. 22 and Oct. 17, but participants can’t discuss results until their run on the aired show is over.

Ann-Marie works at Eli Lilly and Co. and does a lot of global travel for work.

“Being able to watch the show also allowed us to connect with my mom, because we would see some of the countries she traveled to, which I think was fun because we always bragged that my mom got to go to some cool places,” Riley said.

Ann-Marie, 57, played high school sports. Riley, 29, played softball at Carmel High School and George Washington University. She also has competed for Team USA bobsled.

“You have to have a balance of athleticism and problem solving, puzzle solving, those kinds of things,” Ann-Marie

said. “Riley is a professional athlete, but I bring some of the street smarts and life experiences with me in my academic background.”

Riley said she put her mother on a full workout training plan.

“My dad was the spy to make sure she was actually doing it,” Riley said. “But my mom doesn’t give herself enough credit. She is constantly in the gym.

She’s also the mom that goes skydiving with me. She’s riding ATVs and going on hikes and walks.”

The family previously had some TV experience, having appeared on “Family Feud” in April 2025. Ann-Marie, John, Riley and Delaney were joined by John’s brother, Jim Tejcek.

The Season 39 competition began in Vancouver.

“Starting in Canada was a huge treat, because my mom and I, being fans of the show, know they usually start somewhere in the U.S., so the fact that we started international right off the bat threw us for a loop,” Riley said. “So, getting to explore Vancouver was incredible, and thankfully they all spoke English.”

Riley said there was plenty of bonding time with her mother.

“The surprising thing was you are surrounded by other teams, but the one person you have 24 hours a day by you is your teammate,”Ann-Marie said. “It was an unbelievable experience as a mom to be able to have the honor of spending that much time with my daughter.”

“You really just come here every day and hope you are making a difference,” she said. “It’s one thing to have a parent send a kind email or the administration come in and see you do a good lesson.”

But Cronkhite, 40, got a larger affirmation that her work was appreciated as she was selected Teacher of Year first at West Clay and then for all of Carmel Clay Schools. She advanced to the top 25 Indiana Teacher of the Year candidates and then made the cut to top 10. She learned Aug. 28 she did not make it to the final three.

“I am super proud and humbled to even be recognized,” she said.

This is Cronkhite’s 19th year teaching.

She was a student teacher at West Clay while attending Butler University and then returned after graduating.

“We had an alternate day kindergarten program then, so they needed a teacher to teach 2 1/2 days here and 2 1/2 days at Mohawk Elementary,” said Cronkhite, who later earned a master’s degree from Ball State University.

She did that for two years and then taught full-time kindergarten at West Clay. She is in her 10th year teaching first-grade students.

“They are still enjoying school, still liking their teacher and still finding excitement and joy in things,” she said.

“So that 5, 6, 7 age range was kind of a sweet spot for me. From kindergarten to first grade jump, there is so much independence that happens. They’re becoming more curious and have more inquisitive questions and have a little more humor. I like this age group a lot.

Honestly, second grade is probably the oldest grade that I would go to voluntarily. I just enjoy this group of curious kids who still don’t argue and talk back yet.”

West Clay Principal Jill Schipp said Cronkhite has great passion for her students.

“She does such a great job at looking at every single student individually and providing what they need,” she said.

“She’s a great leader on her team and also in the building. Just a joyous personality and wonderful attitude every

Schipp said there was a consistent theme in nominations from parents and colleagues about Cronkhite’s dedication and positivity.

“She is able to carry kids through their growth from academics to the love of reading and loving being a lifetime learner,” Schipp said. “Kids come in at very different levels of academics, and she’s able to capture where they are and just really plant seeds of loving to learn and loving to read and having a very positive outlook on school.”

Cronkhite lives in Noblesville with her husband, Dustin, and two dogs.

“I don’t have children of my own, so maybe that’s why I’m so gung-ho about this job because I don’t have biologicals to stress over,” she said.

City, CCS to present homecoming pep rally news@youarecurrent.com The City of Carmel and Carmel Clay Schools are partnering to present a pep rally to celebrate Carmel High School homecoming, the city’s 50th anniversary and the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The free event is set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at Midtown Plaza, 365 Monon Blvd. CCS students, families, alumni and other members of the Carmel community are invited to attend.

“Homecoming is always a special tradition, but pairing it with our 250/50 milestone makes this year even more special,” Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam stated. “Our partnership with Carmel Clay Schools highlights the strong bond between our city leadership, our schools and the neighbors who make Carmel such an exciting place to live.”

The pep rally will include family-friendly activities, such as face painting and bracelet making. A hype video created by and featuring CHS

students will teach attendees the school fight song.

Several officials, including Finkam, CCS Superintendent Thomas Oestreich and CHS Principal Tim Phares will give remarks. WISH-TV reporter Anthony Calhoun will emcee the event.

“The contagious spirit of CHS homecoming always lights up our high school and families, culminating with Friday night’s big game and the student dance over the weekend,” Oestreich stated. “We are thrilled to host an event with the city that allows all of our Carmel families and Greyhounds, young and old, to come together for an evening of festivities.”

The homecoming parade will take place at noon Oct. 2. CHS will compete against Ben Davis High School at 7 p.m.

Growing to love Carmel Commentary by Peter Beering Fifty-seven years ago, we stayed at the Carmel Motel. It was one of the few near the north side of Indianapolis, then a growing city nicknamed “Indianoplace.”

Staying there was not my decision. The IU School of Medicine hired my father, then a young physician, to be an assistant dean. There was no other place to stay.

Carmel of 1969 was a very different place than contemporary Carmel – more agriculture than anything else, and the “else” was almost entirely along the White River. Little did I know how important Carmel would become, let alone how we would grow together.

After stints in the Marion County Prosecutors Office and the Indianapolis Department of Public Safety, I became an executive with the Indianapolis Water Company. Without a residency requirement, we moved to an innovative development in west Carmel, The Village of WestClay. We

still call it home.

Twenty-six years ago Jim Keckley, Ron Carter and a number of others decided to establish a farmers market.

After several years of discussion, my daughter and I became one of the vendors.

Mission Coffee is celebrating our 21st year as a vendor at the market.

With several businesses incubated in Carmel, we have grown to love what Carmel has become. Carmel has had outstanding leaders, including women mayors long before women were common in such roles. Carmel has also excelled in collaboration with public and private partners. It was former Mayor Jim Brainard’s bold vision that started Carmel on its path. Thanks to him and all those who helped make Carmel what it is, and best wishes to his successors as we forge ahead.

Shamrocks golfer’s added strength boosts game

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Westfield High School senior Sophie Raines had never picked up a golf club until age 13.

“But I’d ride in the golf cart with my dad a little,” she said.

Raines, a standout on the WHS girls golf team, has come a long way since then.

“We’ve played in eight tournaments, around 90 players, and she’s been top 10 in eight of those nine,” Shamrocks coach Josh Bryant said. “She won the Twin Lakes Invitational. She’s been in the top five multiple times. She has developed into a really nice high school player who is capable of playing at the next level. Over the offseason, she’s really gained a lot of strength.”

Raines has worked on swinging the club faster, which Bryant said has added distance.

“She’s hitting it farther,” Bryant said. “She’s scoring better and it’s really a byproduct of the work she has put in.”

Raines is averaging 74 strokes for 18 holes.

“She’s very mentally tough and she likes to compete,” Bryant said.

Raines tied for fifth in the Fall State Preview golf tournament Aug. 10 at Carmel’s Prairie View Golf Club.

She placed eighth in the Indiana High School Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame tournament Aug. 29 at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin. The Shamrocks

were third in the team standings.

“I definitely would say I gained some confidence, especially because I didn’t play my best at the preview tournament,” she said. “The added strength and distance has really helped a lot. I feel like it puts a lot less pressure on your longer irons and maybe hybrids when you have to hit them into the green.”

Raines and Bryant agree ball striking is her main strength.

“I would say even over distance because you can always rely on how you’re going to hit the ball,” Raines said. “I would say my overall tempo has improved significantly over the year as well as putting.”

The Shamrocks placed third at last year’s IHSAA girls golf state finals. Raines placed 36th individually. This year’s state finals are set for Oct. 2-3 at Battle Ground Golf Club near Lafayette.

“My goals for myself and the team is to just continue to be consistent and believe and trust yourself on every shot,” she said.

Growing up, Raines competed in volleyball, tennis, swimming and track before focusing on golf. She plans to continue her golf career in college and major in business and minor in pre-law.

“Currently, my top choice is DePauw University,” she said. “It fits my major really well and overall the program fits me well.”

Be Like Finn: Foundation spreads kindness, support

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Two years after he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2022, Finnegan Davidson was cancer free, but the treatment for his aggressive form of cancer proved too hard on his young organs and he died in 2024 at the age of 12.

Through their Friends of Finn Foundation, Finn’s family wants him to be remembered for his kindness and courage, and to help other young cancer patients and their families as they navigate the difficult path of treatment and recovery. A fundraiser to support the foundation’s mission is set for Sept.

25 at Grand Park.

“Throughout his journey, he was amazing and he showed us what true kindness, courage and generosity looked like,” Finn’s mother, Tamara Davidson of Westfield, said. “He was going through the thick of it and he was always just thanking everybody and telling them how much he appreciated everything they did. We lost him (when) he was 12 — it’ll be Sept. 20 of

this year — to the effects of the treatment. He was still cancer free and his transplant was still 100 percent, but the treatment was just so harsh on his body and his organs. Up until the end, the day that he came off the ventilator and

was awake, he just was, ‘Thank you for taking care of me. Thank you for taking care of my parents.’ He was just a sweet, sweet, very genuine, thoughtful kid.”

Davidson said the foundation was Finn’s idea — a way to give other kids with cancer some of the things that helped him, like fun hospital sheet sets, blankets, Squishmallow toys and personal slushie makers.

“That was Finn’s big thing,” she said. “He wanted them all to have a slushie machine, an individual slushie machine, because he knew that’s what helped him the most getting through his treatment.”

She explained that chemotherapy causes blisters along the esophagus, which makes eating painful.

“It’s horrible, and the (slushies) were

the only thing that he could eat,” she said. “A lot of kids just don’t eat anything, but they really helped him. So, he was like, ‘This is the miracle cure.

Every kid needs to have one, Mom.’ I’m like, ‘Okay, buddy, we’ll make it happen.’”

Davidson said they’ve also provided gift cards for food delivery services, so parents can eat something other than hospital food, and helped out with car payments or rent for families that had to put jobs on the back burner while they navigate their child’s care.

The Be Like Finn Night fundraiser to help pay for that support is set for 6:30 to 10 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Pacers Athletic Center at Grand Park. Davidson said the $30 ticket price includes dinner and music by Indianapolis-based Naptown Hepcats. There also will be an auction and raffle drawings.

“Finn taught us a lot,” Davidson said.

“The biggest takeaway … is that he taught us that you don’t have to be big to make a big difference, and you can choose kindness every single day, no matter what you’re going through.”

Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournaments always evoke special memories for Dr. Greg Durm.

“I played in Gus Macker mostly when I was probably between 10 and 15 years old,” Durm said. “I grew up in Elwood, I’ve almost been a lifelong Hoosier. I played in Gus Mackers all over the area.

Don’t think I ever had the opportunity to win one but certainly had a great time over many years. I played in another one with cousins when I was a bit older, but I don’t think I’ve played in a Gus Macker in a couple of decades. I think it’s actually taken a bit of a hiatus in central Indiana.”

Durm, a thoracic oncologist and Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center researcher, is helping to bring it back. The Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament is set for Oct. 3-4 at Pacers Athletic Center in Westfield. The tournament is sponsored by Republic Airways.

Proceeds from the tournament will support research at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“It’s an iconic tournament and we’re happy to have the opportunity to collaborate with them,” said Durm, who played for Elwood High School.

As a clinical researcher, Durm said he mostly runs and designs clinical trials.

“We were trying to think of ways to improve funding for cancer research, because ultimately we just want to provide the best care for our patients and drive innovation of cancer research in the future,” he said. “So, we wanted to think of ways we could do this to collaborate with the community and engage the community in a way that was unique and true to Indiana.”

Durm said basketball seemed the ideal way to do that.

“In Indiana, basketball is in our blood,” he said. “It’s our culture. We felt this is a perfect opportunity to merge cancer research and basketball.”

Durm presented the idea to the fundraising department, and it came up with the plan to partner with Gus Macker.

Durm, who is serving as honorary head coach for the tournament, said the response has been positive.

“We’d love to see more teams sign up, particularly people who are playing for loved ones, family, friends, colleagues, just to support them and come out for them,” he said. “I’m confident we’re going to get enough people and I’m hopeful that this will be an annual event if we can get enough support for this year.”

Durm, 43, said he is trying to put a team together and determining if he will have time to play.

“I’m also trying to see if my kids, if they have the ability to, will play as well,” Durm said.

Durm reached the 1,000-point scoring milestone in high school. He had wanted to play in college but couldn’t pass up a full ride scholarship to the University of Notre Dame.

“I still play basketball now once a week, mostly with friends my age,” he said.

Durm said in the future organizers might look to have the tournament outdoors where Gus Macker tournaments are usually played.

“But in October, the weather can be unpredictable, so we decided on indoors,” he said.

The event, which has room for 100 teams, is open to anyone age 8 and older with four-person teams. There are men’s and women’s divisions. Registration is open until Sept. 14. To register, visit cancer.iu.edu/gusmacker.

NCAA donates AEDs

By Mark Ambrogi Mark@youarecurrent.com Give the NCAA an assist on its donation to Bolt for the Heart.

With the NCAA men’s basketball Final Four in Indianapolis last spring, the NCAA needed additional automated external defibrillators, which are used to restore a normal heartbeat during a cardiac arrest.

Since the Final Four doesn’t return to Indianapolis until 2029, an NCAA representative asked Bolt for the Heart President Pierre Twer if he could find a home for them. Twer offered to donate the 12 AEDs to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Tanya Terry and she graciously accepted.

“The number of police cars on the streets of Indianapolis is 800-ish plus or minus,” Twer said. “This gets us to 462 (AEDs), so we’re more than halfway there.”

Twer presented the AEDs to Terry Aug. 27 at Hotel Carmichael in Carmel.

Terry said the partnership is more than just a donation. “(It) represents the lives that potentially will be saved and have been saved by programs like this, equipping our of-

Women to discuss faith, finances at free event

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Women from Indiana and beyond will soon gather in Carmel to explore how their faith impacts their finances.

The annual Better Together women’s conference is set for 5 to 9 p.m.

Sept. 22 at Ritz Charles, 12156 N. Meridian St. The free event includes Campbell a keynote address, breakout sessions, dinner, worship and opportunities to connect with other attendees.

“Better Together exists to fill what we perceived as a gap of information, but also confidence and spiritual discipleship,” conference co-founder Anna Campbell said. “The event is centered around an opportunity for women to come together in community and grow in confidence around finances, money and generosity, and to do that within a faith-based context.”

Campbell, a Fishers resident, is chief operating officer of the National Christian Foundation’s Indiana chapter.

NCF, a nonprofit that helps Christians steward their finances, is presenting the conference.

The conference will cover issues related to a great wealth transfer expected in the next 10 to 15 years, as more than $100 trillion is expected to be moved to a spouse or the next generation.

“Women have a really specific role in

that, typically having a longer lifespan than men and also coming up as a next generation of business owners, entrepreneurs and inheritors,” Campbell said. “Women cross into all sorts of these different categories when we talk about wealth, and so it’s just a unique opportunity for us as women to consider where God has placed us and equipped us.”

Author, speaker and Awtrey podcaster Rachel Awtrey will give the keynote address. A Birmingham, Ala., resident, Awtrey is a military spouse and mother of two boys.

“She has this unique perspective of communities coming around her and living into that practical generosity of sustaining her and her family through some of those (difficult) seasons,” Campbell said. “She shares honest and practical stories about growing in your faith.”

Attendees may choose one of three breakout sessions. They cover cultivating wellness, living with open hands financially and raising generous kids.

“This isn’t a financial seminar,” Campbell said. “It’s more of a space for women to consider the spiritual implications of wealth and resources and to really consider their own journeys of generosity and stewardship.”

‘BEYOND DESPERATE’ Dozens of flood victims face long, uncertain road to recovery

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com It’s been a few weeks since floodwaters receded from dozens of homes in east Carmel, but a long recovery is just beginning for the occupants.

Some can live in their homes, while others are staying with loved ones or in temporary housing. At least one family is living in a camper in their driveway.

Matthew Weber has been renting an apartment since 6 feet of water surged from the Mitchner Ditch into his home in the Northwood Hills neighborhood, but he returns often to Weber oversee remediation and restoration efforts.

“It’s depressing,” Weber said. “I don’t enjoy it at all. Every time I come in here, I just want to leave.”

All of the belongings, floors and walls have been removed from the three-bedroom home where Weber has lived since 2019. He has no idea when he will be able to return. He suspects it will be at least a year.

Amal Anthony and her family are still able to live in their nearby house, although the once-flooded living room has been gutted and the crawl space and Anthony ductwork severely damaged. They’ve been without air conditioning since the Aug. 15 flood.

Still, she feels her family is fortunate compared to the plight of many of her neighbors. They were able to move many of their belongings on the lower level to higher ground and evacuate with their dogs to a family member’s home before the worst of the flooding.

The couple across the street was out of town when the floodwaters rushed in. After getting their permission, Anthony’s husband entered the home to rescue their cats and grab a few treasured belongings. Now, that couple is residing in a camper in their front yard.

and some large fish swimming in a puddle that remained in their yard. They discovered that the surging water overturned a fuel tank in their crawlspace, meaning some of the restoration work can’t occur until environmental remediation takes place.

Anthony, who works from home, has been surprised by the amount of time and effort required to deal with the aftermath of the flood.

“Somebody has to manage all this, the phone calls and applying for the state aid and the FEMA aid, and you have to upload 200 documents for everything,” she said. “It is a full-time job

managing that.”

Anthony and Weber both have flood insurance, but they’ve been frustrated by its limitations. They said most costs must be paid up front, and much of the damage and loss isn’t covered.

Now that the immediate danger has passed, both said financial assistance is the greatest help community members could provide.

“I don’t think everybody — and certainly not most people I know in this neighborhood — is in a position where we’ve got $30,000 sitting there unused,” Anthony said.

Weber, who described the overall situation as “beyond desperate,” agreed.

“I hate to say it, but it comes down to we need money,” he said. “It’s the only way to put these houses back together.”

The City of Carmel and several community partners collected donations for flood victims Aug. 27 at the Rally for Relief at Lucas Estate. Donors drove through the site and contributed $20,825 in cash, 5,000 pounds of nonperishable food, 20 pallets of cleaning and recovery supplies and $225 in gift cards. Event partners included OneZone, the Hamilton County Harvest Food Bank, the Hamilton County Community Foundation and Lucas Oil. “When our neighbors need support, this community steps up without hesitation,” Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam stated.

Elections shouldn’t cancel school Editor, According to an article in the Sept.

1 edition of Current in Carmel about public school campuses operating as vote centers, “Officials at Carmel Clay Schools were among those not immediately on board. CCS Superintendent Thomas Oestreich said the district’s top priority is student safety and that opening campuses to the public for voting introduces ‘significant security and operational challenges.’”

I am most discouraged to read that our superintendent puts safety first in schools and not education.

When I was in grade and middle school a polling place was in my school and I considered it an important part

of my civic education. The recurrent appearance of voting machines and the experience of neighbors showing up in numbers to vote led to me being a lifelong voter, only missing one election in 55 years (when my absentee ballot arrived in Munich on election day).

Having the machines to look at, to have them explained to me and to see the friendly and orderly process not only made me a voter, but also a poll worker.

I earnestly urge the Carmel Clay Schools board not to cancel school on election day but rather make it an inschool celebration of the democratic process.

Practical immigration reform Editor, Rather than make immigration a partisan issue, let’s work to find a practical solution. Both Biden and Trump get villainized for their policies, but it is really up to Congress to pass legislation to fix the problem. Unfortunately, they continue to argue while abdicating their responsibility to the presidency.

I would recommend three practical steps: 1. Secure our borders to stop further illegal immigration.

2. Create a path toward citizenship for the people who entered our country illegally.

3. Update our immigration laws to

allow more people to legally enter our country each year.

I believe the two-party system is dying. There are now more independents than Republicans or Democrats. The majority of Congress in both parties know and agree on what they need to do, but always first ask, “Is this good for me? Is this good for my party?” And finally, “Is this good for our country and the people I represent?”

It is time for independent candidates to rise and end the dependency on the two parties and their struggle to be in power.

Veteran CFD official back at work after heart attack

By Sara Palmer news@currentincarmel.com When John Moriarty talks about his nearly 45 years with the Carmel Fire Department, he doesn’t talk about himself for long.

Instead, he talks about arriving in Carmel in 1981 with $600 and a beat-up truck. He talks about meeting the love of his life, Lori Ann, just one month after joining the department. He talks about the firefighters who became family, the city that welcomed a 21-year-old firefighter beginning his career, and the community that he says gave him everything.

“I owe it all to the city of Carmel,” Moriarty said. “This community gave me a chance of a lifetime.”

So, when the veteran firefighter suffered a heart attack on Dec. 31, 2025 — his 66th birthday — it wasn’t the thought of his own mortality that stayed with him most.

It was seeing his wife cry.

“That bothered me more than anything,” Moriarty said. “To see her cry.”

While removing Christmas decorations from CFD’s Santa Tours fire truck with Lori Ann, she noticed something he hadn’t.

“Honey, you look awful white,” she told him.

Although he had spent nearly 45 years recognizing emergencies in others, Moriarty initially believed his symptoms were severe heartburn. He first noticed a burning sensation across the front and back of his chest, which gradually intensified into a sensation he described “like a vice” tightening around him. Assuming it would pass, he wanted to go home and lie down.

Lori Ann had other plans. She insisted they go to the hospital.

“I’m thinking, ‘I’m interrupting all these co-workers,’” he said. “Here I’m walking in with probably just heartburn.”

Instead, an electrocardiogram at Ascension St. Vincent confirmed he was having a heart attack.

Rather than panic, Moriarty watched nurses and physicians move with calm precision. One nurse stayed beside Lori Ann throughout the ordeal, explaining each step.

said.

Dr. Ezequiel Munoz, a cardiologist involved in Moriarty’s care, credits his recovery to recognizing the warning signs and seeking immediate treatment.

“The prompt recognition of his symptoms played a major role in his recovery and made the procedure safer and more straightforward,” Munoz said. “His return to the fire department after such a significant cardiac event speaks volumes about his commitment to his community and his sense of duty.”

Moriarity was back at work a week later, in time to meet with the newest class of CFD recruits.

Inspired by his father, an Indianapolis firefighter, Moriarty spent more than 36 years on the front lines, eventually serving as a captain before hip replacements led him to step away from shift work. His retirement lasted only 16 days.

Department and city leaders asked him to return, creating his current role as division chief of community relations.

Today, his work has changed little. He continues to represent CFD throughout the community, educating residents, attending events and building relationships. He continues serving the department and the community that has shaped his life, though with an even deeper appreciation for each day.

If anything has changed since his heart attack, it’s his desire to use the experience to help someone else recognize the warning signs he almost dismissed.

For Moriarty, sharing one of the most difficult days of his life is simply another way to serve.

“If I can educate the public on it more, that’s my goal,” he said. “I just hope and pray that it can help someone else out.”

On Aug. 28, it celebrated its move into a new headquarters on the fifth floor of Hamilton Crossing VI with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Kincaid’s Meat Market opened in June at 2159 Glebe St. The shop aims to provide a selection of fresh protein, local products and personalized butcher services to the neighborhood.

Joseph Dugdale, who co-owns and operates Kincaid’s with his brother Jonathan Dugdale, said they had been interested in opening a WestClay location for years but had been waiting for space to become available on Glebe Street.

Joseph Dugdale described the business expansion from its Indianapolis and Fishers locations as an opportunity to fill a gap in neighborhood offerings.

The shop sells a variety of products ranging from everyday staples to

specialty cuts. Its USDA Prime filet is among its most popular items. Club Down sirloin, American and Australian Wagyu and Japanese Kobe beef are also customer favorites. Kincaid’s carries imported cheeses and pastas as well as local offerings, including Angelo Italian Market’s pastas, Heidi Ho Baked Good’s banana bread and B’s Bagels’ salads.

“Over time, we realized that we wanted the freedom to create something that was truly our own, something that reflected our ideas, our customers and the kind of experience we wanted to bring to the Carmel community,” Aparna Prasad said. “For us, the rebrand is much more than changing the name or signage. We have been gradually transforming the shop into a broader cafe and dessert experience, with a strong focus on products that are freshly made and a little different from what customers typically find in one place.”

The change gives the Prasads more freedom to develop the concept.

Yacht Rock Revue to cover classics at Ruoff Music Center

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com In 2024, Yacht Rock Revue opened for Train and REO Speedwagon at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville.

The following year, the band headlined at Everwise Amphitheater in Indianapolis.

Now, Yacht Rock Revue is back as the headliner at Ruoff for its PRIMETIME tour. The concert is set for 8 p.m.

Sept. 12.

“This is our biggest tour to date, which seems to defy logic given our age and the number of years we’ve been doing this,” said Nicholas Niespodziani, the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist. “But it just keeps getting bigger and it’s really fun. We’ve expanded in some places to venues that are much bigger than I ever imagined, including Ruoff, which I knew in my days in Indiana as Deer Creek.”

Niespodziani, who grew up in Columbus, graduated from Columbus East High School in 1996. He met his business partner and co-leader Peter Olson in fourth grade. Along with vocals, Olson plays guitar, keyboards and percussion.

“We’ve been friends ever since,” Niespodziani said. “We both went to Indiana University. We have four IU grads in the band, so our Indiana ties are strong and we definitely feel that love every time we come back home.”

Niespodziani and Olson formed Yacht Rock Revue in Atlanta in 2007.

They were members of Y-O-U, an indie pop rock band that started at IU. “We got some songs and commercials and went on some tours, but never really got our big break,” Niespodziani said. “So, when Yacht Rock started, Y-O-U kind of got folded into that vibe.”

Although Yacht Rock Revue has a few original songs, its setlist is mostly covers of rock classics by groups and performers such as Christopher Cross,

“The demand seems to be inelastic for this music,” Niespodziani said.

“I think partly because the guys are retiring, partly because the music is so great and timeless and just evokes a good time every time you hear it. And I think part of it is that our band is pretty unique in terms of the level of talent and the kind of commitment that we bring to this.”

Yacht Rock Revue has played a variety of venues this year. Niespodziani said the usual audience capacity is 3,000 to 5,000.

“Sometimes it’s bigger and sometimes it’s smaller,” he said.

He said the band has a large following in the Indianapolis area.

“It’s like a high school reunion for me,” Niespodziani said. “Even the kids who wanted to beat me up come see the show.”

Niespodziani said there is an acous-

tic set in the middle of the concert.

“Peter and I harken back to our high school days and usually in that little set, I throw in some things specific to the region that we’re playing in,” he said. “So, I’ve got some good Indiana stuff planned for the Ruoff show.”

The band will include an original such as “Tropical Illusion.”

“We hope to catch their ear with ours, but when you are going up against 30 of the greatest songs ever written (it’s tough),” Niespodziani said. “Every other song would be like the encore for the band that we’re covering. So, it’s a tall order to throw our own (song) in there, but we do a little bit of it anyway.”

Free film workshop focuses on sound design

By Alex McCarthy alex@youarecurrent.com James Moriarty, producer and host of the Carmel Film Forum, said filmmaking is “the hardest medium there is.” It involves a diverse set of skills and a whole team of people to make a good film, and one of the most underrated yet vital skills is sound design.

“Without good audio, you’ve got nothing,” Moriarty said.

With that in mind, the Carmel Film Forum’s annual workshop Sept. 12 focuses on sound production. Brian Hansen, a professional location sound mixer with more than 25 years of experience, is leading the workshop, titled Learning Production Sound for Digital Creators and Filmmakers.

The free workshop includes two sessions. The first will focus on basics, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Carmel Clay Public Library. The second session is from 5 to 7 p.m. at Flowing Well Park, where participants will put their skills to the test in the field. More information is avail-

Moriarty said the workshop is for flmmakers and creators of all skill levels. Since the Carmel Film Forum was founded in 2017, the film landscape has expanded to include digital creators who make short films and videos for social media.

“Now that there’s all these content creators out there, we think we can up their game a little bit as well so they can then participate in this project and learn a little bit about how audio works,” Moriarty said.

The Carmel Film Forum’s annual workshop is funded in part by a Carmel Arts Grant with support from the Indy Film Fest and Round Table Recording Company. Moriarty said Carmel is a perfect place for artists because of the community’s passion for art.

“They focus on the arts and they put their money where their mouth is and support projects like this from everything to theater to painting to all kinds of stuff,” Moriarty said.

Artomobilia cars range from ‘oddball’ to ‘sentimental’

By Alex McCarthy alex@youarecurrent.com You only needed to stand by Jeff Lane’s cars for a few minutes to hear the astounded comments.

“Does that thing take flight?” a young man asked a friend as he gestured to the 1932 Helicron, a propeller-driven French car in Lane’s collection.

“I don’t even think I could drive that,” a small boy said to his parents as they passed Lane’s replica of the 1964 Peel P-50, the Guinness-record smallest production car ever made.

This was the scene at the 19th annual Automobilia event in Carmel Aug. 29.

Each year, the festival features about 500 cars from across the country, and draws around 20,000 visitors. Lane was the featured collector this year, bringing a handful of eccentric cars up from his Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, Tenn.

“Oddball cars is our general theme,” Lane said.

Lane grew up in Detroit and inherited a car obsession from his father that blossomed into collecting bizarre vehicles from all over the world. In addition to the Helicron and the Peel, he brought a few others including the 1963 Amphicar 770, a convertible that can navigate on land or water thanks to twin propellers.

Every vehicle, whether it had propellers or was simply an attractive luxury car, came to Artomobilia with a story to tell.

Zionsville residents Mark and Kelly Maucere’s 1965 Ford Mustang was a tribute to Kelly’s father Bobby McLain.

McLain adored cars and his Mustang in particular, but over the years the car “started to fall apart,” Mark explained.

When McLain was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, his family made it a goal to restore the car so he could ride in it again.

They accomplished that, allowing McLain to once again ride in his beloved Mustang. This year was the first time they brought the car to Artomobilia.

“It’s very special, a very sentimental piece for us,” Mark said. “...It’s just our little way of honoring him.”

Indianapolis resident Claire Johnson’s car also told a story about her father, Brett Johnson. Brett has been involved with Artomobilia for several years and is a Porsche enthusiast. When Claire needed a car in college, her dad encouraged her to look around for a Porsche Boxster. She found one in Ohio, and before she knew it, Brett had gone and gotten it for her.

As she sat behind her 1999 Porsche Boxster and looked around, Claire reflected on the expansion of the annual event.

“I like to see how the event’s grown over the last couple years,” Claire said.

“It was a lot smaller when we first started to come here. But now, it’s really big.”

29th annual Middle Eastern Festival set

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com The annual St. George Orthodox Church Middle Eastern Festival celebrates the Arab heritage of the church founders, featuring Middle Eastern food, music, dancing and more.

This year’s 29th annual festival in Fishers is set for Sept. 18-20, with most activity taking place in the church parking lot. Father Anthony Yazge said a DJ will spin tunes Sept. 18 and a live band will perform Sept. 19 and 20.

Throughout the festival, baked desserts like traditional baklava, kanafe and cookies will be available for purchase in the church basement, which also will house vendors offering goods and clothing from the Middle East.

A children’s play area and outdoor food tents will be set up in the church parking lot. Food tents will offer menu items like shawarma — marinated chicken served in a pita with pickles and a creamy garlic sauce — and kafta, which is ground beef mixed with parsley, onions and spices, also served in a pita. The booths also will have the popular lamb shanks, falafel and stuffed grape leaves, along with honey balls — fried dough served with sweet toppings.

In previous years, the festival included professional dabke dancers. This year, though, Yazge said the church’s dancers have gained enough experience to do all the performances themselves.

that’ll be dancing Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” Yazge said, adding that the festival program will be available on the church website about a week before the event. “That will also list the schedule of the dancing and the performing and everything that’ll happen throughout the festival.”

The festival is free to attend and kicks off at 5 p.m. Sept. 18 at the church, 10748 E. 116th St. The event opens again at noon Sept. 19, running through 10 p.m., and wraps up Sept. 20, with activities from noon to 4 p.m.

Parking will be at the nearby Hoosier Road Elementary School, 11300 E. 121st St. A shuttle will bring people to and from the festival.

Brownsburg graduate set for Opera in the Park

However, the 2013 BHS graduate soon discovered his true calling as a singer.

“You have to take a fine arts credit to graduate, so I took choir,” he said. “I ended up really liking singing. Then I got a scholarship to take three voice lessons the following winter. That was my first real exposure to classical music.

I didn’t even know you could major in opera and make any sort of career with opera. So, that was really eye-opening for me. That was a turning point where I decided I could make money with my voice and be an opera singer.”

Dukes will perform Sept. 11 in Indianapolis Opera’s Opera in the Park. The free concert begins at 7 p.m. at MacAllistar Amphitheater at Garfield Park in Indianapolis. Gates open at 6 p.m. The concert is hosted by soprano Angela Brown and conductor Alfred Savia.

“Being featured as a guest artist in a company from where I’m from is always an honor and a pleasure in itself,” Dukes said. “I’m really looking forward to performing with Angela Brown. Her career speaks for itself and singing with a singer of that caliber is an honor. All of my friends are in the chorus, so I get to hang put with my friends and make great music.”

Dukes, a bass singer, will perform a duet from “Porky and Bess ” with Brown, an international opera singer who lives in Indianapolis.

Dukes is based in Greenwood but travels to perform with opera groups across the U.S. In the past, he had mostly been in chorus work with Indy Opera.

“My first role debut with Indy Opera was in ‘La Traviata,’ which was one of the first productions I was involved with (at Indy Opera), so it’s kind of a full-circle moment,” said Dukes, who will play Doctor Grenvil Nov. 13-15 at The Tarkington at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

Joseph McBrayer will participate in Opera in the Park for the third time. He previously performed at the concert in 2019 while he was at Indiana University and again as an Indy Opera resident artist in 2020.

“I’m such a fan of Angela Brown and it’s great to be on stage with her and hear her sing,” McBrayer said.

McBrayer will sing an aria from “La Traviata.”

“I did that aria in grad school at IU and I’ve done the show a couple of times,” he said.

In addition, he’ll sing “Is Anybody There?” from the musical “1776.”

“It’s a bit more Golden Age musical theater than operatic, but I know the direction we are wanting to take with it – a bit more operatic than how they would do it on the Broadway recording,” he said.

McBrayer will return to Indy Opera to perform as Sancho in “Man of La Mancha,” which is set for April 30 and May 1, 2027, at The Tobias Theater at Newfields in Indianapolis.

McBrayer is based in Milwaukee, where he performs with Florentine Opera and Brew City Opera.

“My wife, Hayley, who is also a signer, is from the (Milwaukee) area,” he said.

“She was one of Indy Opera’s resident artists in 2020.”

McBrayer said Opera in the Park exposes a new crowd to opera.

“It’s a nice thing for families to do and there might be a few familiar tunes that people have actually heard before,” he said. “You don’t have to have to get dressed up. I know plenty of people don’t get dressed up to go to the opera anymore, and I think that’s fine. But there’s still that stigma that you have to put on a three-piece suit, put on your best and pay a lot of money to go to a theater to experience opera, and you don’t. Opera in the Park is a great example of that and I’m happy to be part of it again.”

Martin, a doctor of audiology at Professional Hearing Services in Fayetteville, has slight hearing loss. When someone nearby would loudly flip through their program or when the orchestra would play music over someone speaking on stage, she would miss a word here and there. When Walton Arts Center began using a new assistive listening system called Auracast (at Martin’s suggestion), Martin attended the musical “Water for Elephants” and could hear everything.

Auracast is now available at the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts’ Payne & Mencias Palladium in Carmel, bringing the “life-changing” technology to Indianapolis-area residents with hearing loss. Attendees can either check out a headset prior to a show or access the service by using the Bluetooth function on their hearing device. Those wishing to use the technology but unsure how to access it can ask their medical provider for assistance.

Dr. Suzanne O’Connor, owner of Professional Hearing Services, Inc. in Indianapolis, said she believes the Palladium is the first major venue in Indiana to use the service. Many of her patients

struggle to hear specific voices or music when they’re in noisy public places.

“That signal-to-noise ratio, the difference in sound between the noise, the environment and what they want to pick out of that noise, is such a struggle,” O’Connor said. “That’s been the holy grail of our field. Well, this opens that up so they can go to performances like (at the) Palladium.”

She and Dr. Amanda Rosinko at Professional Hearing Services began talking about Auracast about a year ago, agreeing that venues in the area should start using it. They brought the idea to Allied Solutions Center staff, including Chief Operating Officer Jeff Steeg. The Palladium already had an assisted listening system in place, but both Steeg and O’Connor said it wasn’t a perfect system. Auracast is much more effective at connecting to devices and maintaining a strong signal throughout a show, they said.

Making performances more accessible has been a major focus at Allied Solutions Center venues in recent years, Steeg said. He recounted a visit from an accessibility advisor a couple years ago that identified various ways for the venues to improve. Now, the venues have services such as more railings and automatic doors in addition to implementing Auracast.

“The big thing that I took away out of that whole process was we have to meet people where they’re at, and we don’t necessarily know where they’re at,” Steeg said. “So, in implementing these various things and updating our technology with the Auracast system, we are providing more opportunities for patrons to come and experience a performance or an event in as easy a way as they can.”

If someone would like to check out a headset, they can go to coat check at the west entrance of the Palladium and ask the staff member or volunteer there for an Auracast headset. Once they are in the performance hall, they have to turn the device off and back on again, and it will connect to the Auracast signal.

O’Connor and Martin are strong advocates for Auracast. Martin experienced firsthand how much it improves the theater experience for people with hearing loss, and O’Connor said it will allow people to finally come back to the theater if they’ve struggled to hear shows in the past.

What inspired these two homes, and how do they fit Wild Air’s “luxury meets nature” theme?

Wedgewood’s goal with the 2026 Home-A-Rama was to show consistent, efficient design solutions. This is a constant with Wedgewood and our focus on design was able to be enhanced with the location and theme of Wild Air and the overall feel of the community. Both homes bring the outdoors in, with a focus on the use of various materials, multiple places to entertain, while not losing sight of the main goal and how today’s family lives on a day to day basis.

How did Wild Air’s shared spaces (trails, dog park, fitness, coworking) influence your floor plans?

We focused, as we always do, on maximizing use not only of each individual lot that our home is built on, but how families live and entertain. Our designs this year encourage utilizing the outdoors. Whether that is physically being outside, or creating site lines and views of nature from virtually every part of the home.

What feature in each home are you most excited for visitors to see?

The overall spacious feeling of the two Wedgewood designs this year is critical to the foundation of what Wedgwood brings to every design encounter with our customers. We try to do our best to design intentionally and to utilize the entire space without having to overbuild or just add square footage to the homes. I truly am excited to see how customers react to the utilization of space.

What subtle detail in either home are you especially proud of?

For us at Wedgewood, yes, we take tremendous pride in what we build, where we build and how we build it. We have created tremendous partnerships over the years and that is a critical piece to what people can see and feel. But bigger than that, what customers don’t typically see until working with us in depth, is our team and true passion behind the scenes. It’s hard to experience what Wedgewood really means until you go through the detailed, customer focused process that we take tremendous pride in.

If you lived in either home, which room would you spend the most time in?

This has been a fun question to answer. Each time I have been in the home during the build and pre-show process, not only do I get different answers from the people I am walking with, but I find myself feeling differently each time as well. But in both cases, I can see the outdoor spaces and the integration into the way the home lives everyday is going to be a true talking point this year.

What are your favorite indoor-outdoor design elements?

Both Wedgewood homes in the 2026 Home-A-Rama push you to focus on the outdoor spaces. Whether you can physically be outside or simply enjoy the views, the feeling of Wild Air is solidified in our design and how the lines between nature and the indoors are blurred.

What inspired these two homes, and how do they fit Wild Air’s “luxury meets nature” theme?

We wanted the homes to have two very different personalities while both feeling at home in Wild Air. Keeneland (Lot 16, Stop 7) is a refined woodland retreat inspired by New England shingle-style architecture, while Marvie (Lot 24, Stop 2) is a warmer, more playful take on a classic Craftsman. Both are really about thoughtful design, comfortable luxury and creating a connection to the outdoors.

How did Wild Air’s shared spaces (trails, dog park, fitness, coworking) influence your floor plans?

Wild Air is very lifestyle-driven, and we wanted the homes to reflect that. We focused on spaces for gathering, wellness, working from home and spending time outdoors. Keeneland’s lower-level wellness space – with the gym, custom built-in sauna and cold plunge – is probably the clearest example of that.

What feature in each home are you most excited for visitors to see?

At Keeneland, we are excited for visitors to experience the way we took advantage of our wooded lot by creating a well-appointed outdoor living space. We have a large covered outdoor patio with motorized drop-down screens, a fireplace, built-in grill center and two seating areas. Beyond that is an uncovered patio with a hot tub and remote fire pit overlooking the woods. At Marvie, we love how so much personality is packed into a smaller footprint. We have gathering space for days, a porch swing overlooking the pond, and a cute reading nook in the loft to cozy up with a book.

What subtle detail in either home are you especially proud of?

The millwork at Keeneland. There are

so many little details that you may not immediately notice, but together they give the house so much character and make it feel established rather than brand new.

At Marvie, it is the way we tied in timeless Craftsman architecture both inside and out, while giving the home a very modern feel in the way it lives.

If you lived in either home, which room would you spend the most time in?

At Keeneland, it’s a toss-up between the kitchen/dining and outdoor living.

Both hold so many potentials for entertaining with the cathedral ceilings and ample space for eating, drinking and

relaxing with your friends and family. At Marvie, it would probably be the porch swing or reading nook.

What are your favorite indoor-outdoor design elements?

Both homes have wonderful outdoor living spaces with fire features. Retractable screens and large sliding doors allow you to invite nature inside or seamlessly flow from kitchen/living/dining to the outdoors. We also have an outdoor fountain in front of Keeneland, which is just heavenly for enjoying your morning coffee on the porch while greeting your neighbors.

We wanted the two homes to feel distinct while reflecting the relaxed luxury that defines Wild Air. The home on Lot 22 was designed around comfortable main-level living, with an open kitchen, dining area and great room that connect directly to the covered porch. Lot 13 has a larger, family-focused layout, with additional bedrooms and a loft upstairs, along with generous gathering spaces throughout the home.

Both homes combine refined architecture and high-end finishes with natural materials, large windows and strong connections to the outdoors. They feel luxurious, but they’re also warm, comfortable and designed for everyday living.

How did Wild Air’s shared spaces (trails, dog park, fitness, coworking) influence your floor plans?

Wild Air encourages residents to be active, connected and engaged with the community, so we designed both homes to support that lifestyle. Each includes a private study for working from home, dedicated exercise space, functional mudroom areas and open gathering spaces where family and friends can come together.

The neighborhood amenities allow the homes to focus less on separating people and more on creating comfortable spaces that complement an active lifestyle.

What feature in each home are you most excited for visitors to see?

In Lot 22, I’m most excited for visitors to experience the connection between the great room, kitchen and covered rear porch. The sightlines and flow make the entire main level feel open and inviting.

The lower level is another highlight, with a family room, media lounge, game room and fitness area that make it a true extension of the home. In Lot 13, the kitchen and prep kitchen will be a major feature. They provide a beautiful central gathering space while keeping the working side of the kitchen organized. I also think visitors will appreciate the home’s four-car garage and the way the upstairs loft creates a separate living space for children or guests.

What subtle detail in either home are you especially proud of?

I’m especially proud of how carefully the transitions between spaces were planned. The homes feel open, but each room still has its own purpose and character. Details like the prep kitchen in Lot 13, the placement of the studies and mudrooms, and the way the windows frame outdoor views may not be the first things visitors notice, but they make a tremendous difference in how the homes live every day.

I would probably spend the most time in the great room and kitchen area. That is naturally where everyone gathers, whether you’re cooking, watching a game or entertaining friends. With the covered porch just outside, it becomes one large indoor-outdoor living space that can be enjoyed throughout much of the year.

What are your favorite indoor-outdoor design elements?

The covered rear porches are my favorite elements because they feel like true outdoor rooms rather than additions to the house. Large windows and doors bring in natural light, preserve views and create an easy transition from the kitchen and great room to the porch. We also used natural colors, stone and warm architectural materials to help the homes feel connected to the Wild Air landscape.

The goal was to make the outdoor surroundings part of the experience from the moment you enter the home.

What inspired these two homes, and how do they fit Wild Air’s “luxury meets nature” theme?

We wanted the homes to feel timeless, grounded, and connected to their surroundings. The English Country home

offers a warm, collected elegance, while the Traditional European Farmhouse celebrates handcrafted materials and natural textures.

Both show that luxury can feel refined without feeling removed from nature.

How did Wild Air’s shared spaces influence your floor plans?

Wild Air encourages residents to move beyond their own front doors, so we designed the homes to support that lifestyle. Flexible workspaces, organized entry spaces and open gathering areas make it easy to transition from working at home to enjoying the trails, fitness center and neighborhood amenities.
