Less than three weeks ago, Blue Woods Creek quietly flowed into the White River in southeast Carmel, surrounded by mature trees and city infrastructure. But after the surging river crested Aug. 16, the floodwaters reversed its course and carved a new path into Martin Marietta’s Sand and Gravel Pit, filling the quarry with more than 8 billion gallons of water as it eroded the creekbed and surrounding area and destroyed a Hazel Dell parkway bridge. Quickly constructed dams kept the river from fully diverting into the quarry and destroying major sewer lines along the way. Now that the river has receded, the area that once surrounded the creek is 30 feet lower and has a vastly different topography.

Quarry draining expected to take at least 90 days

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com As billions of gallons of water from the flooding White River cascaded into Martin Marietta’s Carmel Sand and Gravel pit Aug. 17, City of Carmel officials wondered if the quarry would ever be operational again.

At the time, it appeared almost certain that the entire river would reroute into the pit and fill it before overflowing back into the riverbed again. The surging flood had already reversed the flow of Blue Woods Creek — which typically flows into the river — before forging a new path into the quarry, creating a waterfall of erosion that destabilized and destroyed the Hazel Dell Parkway bridge south of 106th Street and lowered the ground 30 feet below it.

But as the waters began to recede, city officials — with help from the Indiana National Guard — quickly constructed a series of makeshift dams to prevent further erosion. By mid-day Aug. 19, it appeared they would keep the river within its banks, sparing the quarry from becoming a permanent 9-billion-gallon lake.

Now, officials believe the pit can be drained back into the White River, a process expected to take at least 90 days and include multiple government agencies.

“Everybody’s in uncharted territory right now,” Carmel Utilities Director Lane Young said. “But I think we have a good plan to help them get (the water) back into the river.”

Young said the water will need to

be tested before and throughtout the process.

“It was an operating mine (Aug. 14),” Young said. “There’s equipment down there. There’s stuff that got washed away. There’s fuel for that equipment.

The petroleum products would rise to the top. So thus far, we’ve not seen any sheen. So, they’re hopeful that whatever containers they were in have held.”

In a statement, a Martin Marietta spokesperson said the company is “actively evaluating the impact of the flooding” alongside federal, state and local authorities. That impact includes Carmel employees unable to return to their workplace for the foreseeable future.

“As we continue this work, we remain focused on the well-being of our Martin Marietta team members and their loved ones,” the statement reads. “We understand the uncertainty some of our employees are experiencing as a result of this historic flooding. We are in communication with our team members and union partners to develop a plan that will help our employees and facilitate a return to work as conditions allow.”

The unavailability of the quarry is also affecting the timeline of area construction projects.

“It’s a whole story in itself how much has come out of this quarry to build Central Indiana and beyond,” Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam said. “The (Indiana) Speaker of the House said that the LEAP district now has a call out for 200 miles around it for the product it can’t get here anymore. We’re going to rebuild, and we need that product, too.”

County officials provide flood recovery update

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County officials provided updates on temporary housing assistance for displaced residents, debris removal, cleanup efforts and the status of potential federal disaster assistance Aug. 24 at the Hamilton County Judicial Center as the county moves into long-term recovery following historic flooding.

Hamilton County Emergency Operations Executive Director Chad Knecht said data collected Aug. 20 showed an excess of $32 million in damages to homes and infrastructure, not including the Hazel Dell Parkway bridge over Blue Woods Creek in Carmel, which was deemed a total loss.

United Engineering is the contracted engineer for the redesign of the bridge.

The design phase will be 60 days, with the goal to have the bridge reconstructed by the end of 2027.

Hamilton County Commissioner Christine Altman said the county also is assessing the park systems throughout the county, as well as Potter’s Bridge in Noblesville, the only remaining covered bridge in Hamilton County.

“Water touched the underside of that historic bridge,” Altman said. “Our bridge personnel at the county have looked and done some preliminary assessments. We believe Potter’s Bridge will be fine.”

CrowderGulf, a disaster recovery and debris management company, has been contracted to perform debris collection.

Residents are asked to place debris in separate piles on the curb.

“It is very important that we separate this waste to get (Federal Emergency Management Agency) reimbursement,” Altman said.

The county also continues to work on short-term housing for residents who were displaced from their homes.

“Where we’re going is trying to get our community back together and whole again, and that involves making sure we have long-term plans for housing for our residents that were displaced,” Knecht said.

The county’s flood relief helpline remains active at 317-645-3261.

CCS may cancel school on election days

By Ann Marie Shambaugh and Jessica Todd AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com At least one school district in Hamilton County is considering canceling classes on election days to accommodate a plan to use some campuses as polling locations. Other districts expect to proceed without adjusting school calendars.

The county’s four largest districts had preKreag Williams viously stopped using schools as polling sites, citing student safety and logistical concerns. State law requires they be available for use on Election Day at no charge, but county election officials found other locations and hadn’t pushed the issue.

That changed with the county’s revived plan to switch from precinct-based voting to a vote center model, which would allow ballots to be cast at any county vote center on Election Day. The county election board failed to advance the proposal in 2025, but this year it is expected to be approved.

If that happens, the vote center model will go into effect for the 2027 municipal elections. County officials expect to have 57 vote centers, compared to the 102 precinct polling locations in this year’s elections.

So, officials have been searching for facilities large enough to accommodate anticipated increased traffic at each site, and they believe school campuses are a good fit.

“Our world-class schools already serve as natural hubs for our neighborhoods, making them ideal vote center locations equipped with the familiarity, parking, accessibility and physical space needed to efficiently handle the turnout on election day,” Hamilton County Commissioner Mark Heirbrandt said. “This will also result in streamlined costs, saving taxpayer dollars.”

Hamilton County Clerk Kathy Kreag Williams said county commissioners met with local school superintendents to discuss the vote center plan.

“Right away, more than half of them were excited to work with us and get it done,” she said. “With the others, we

talked it through and we had meetings with them and found the schools that would best work.”

Officials at Carmel Clay Schools were among those not immediately on board.

CCS Superintendent Thomas Oestreich said the district’s top priority is student safety and that opening campuses to the public for voting introduces “significant security and operational challenges.”

“We are currently evaluating the impact, but we do not believe Oestreich it is possible to accommodate the required number of polling places across our district without altering our school schedule,” Oestreich said. “Our administration is working closely with the school board to determine the necessary operational adjustments, which will likely include closing impacted school buildings, resulting in no school for some or all grade levels.”

Other districts expect to accommodate vote centers without significantly altering their schedule. Marnie Cooke, a spokesperson for Noblesville Schools, said the district was willing to collaborate with the county when approached with the vote center proposal.

“We have a plan to ensure public voting would take place in areas of our buildings that are securely isolated from students and staff,” Cooke said.

Emily Abbotts, a spokesperson for Hamilton Southeastern Schools, said HSE will focus on keeping students safe should the proposal pass.

Kreag Williams said county and school district officials worked together to determine which sites to use as vote centers. She declined to provide a list, as contracts are pending approval.

The Hamilton County Election Board is expected to vote on transitioning to the vote center model at a public meeting set for 10 a.m. Sept. 29 at the Hamilton County Judicial Center, 1 Hamilton County Square. Members of the public are encouraged to comment on the proposal at the meeting.

Man shot by police facing multiple felony charges

An Indianapolis man shot by Carmel police Aug. 6 on U.S. 31 is facing multiple felony charges.

Two officers fired their weapons at Jacob Berry, 18, after he exited his pickup truck and pointed a “hunting style” rifle at them, according to a probable cause affidavit. The officers, who have been cleared of wrongdoing, were not injured.

Police began searching for Berry’s vehicle after his father called 911 to report that Berry had threatened to harm himself or commit suicide by cop, the affidavit states. An app on the father’s phone showed that Berry was traveling from Sheridan southbound on U.S. 31.

An officer who located the vehicle reported Berry was traveling at speeds of up to 110 mph in Carmel. Berry stopped on the side of the road near 116th Street and stepped out of the vehicle, with an officer close behind him. Then, Berry pointed the rifle at the officer and stepped toward him.

That’s when the officer fired several shots at Berry, who dropped the rifle and fell to the ground, the affidavit states. When Berry attempted to reach for the rifle again, the officer and another officer who had arrived on scene both fired at him.

“During this second round of shots, Berry attempted to pick up a rifle for a third time,” the affidavit states. “How-

ever, (he) was unable to retrieve the rifle. Berry was struck again and laid back on the ground, with the rifle at his feet and did not attempt to pick it up again.”

Officers approached Berry to provide medical attention, which included tourniquets, bandages, chest seals and wraps, the affidavit states. Medics transported Berry to Ascension St. Vincent hospital in Indianapolis, where he received treatment for multiple gunshot wounds. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Detectives attempted to interview Berry in the hospital four days after the shooting, but he declined to make a statement and requested an attorney, the affidavit states.

Investigators obtained warrants to search Berry’s vehicle and a memory card in a dashboard camera, which contained a conversation between Berry and a woman believed to be his mother.

The affidavit states that Berry told her, “If you call the cops, I’m pointing this rifle at them and I’m dying.”

The Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office charged Berry with two counts of aggravated battery, two counts of intimidation and two counts of pointing a firearm at another. His bond is set at $100,000.

Current reached out to Berry’s attorney, Timothy Hixson, for comment but did not receive a response.

The Indiana State Police investigated the incident.

CVS robbers sentenced

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Two men who robbed a CVS pharmacy on Carmel’s Range Line Road in June 2023 will spend several years in prison.

U.S. District Judge Sarah Barker Evans on July 28 sentenced Mikhal Hamilton, 26, to 13 years behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release. A federal jury found Hamilton guilty on several counts in March.

His accomplice, David Washington, 24, of Arcadia, previously pleaded guilty and received a nine-year sentence followed by five years of supervised release.

At approximately 5:30 a.m. on June 25, 2023, Hamilton and Washington pointed a gun in the face of an employee at the CVS on Range Line Road and demanded she open the safe. After she did so, they filled bags with pill bottles before fleeing in a blue Chevrolet Impala parked nearby, according to a U.S. Department of Justice press release.

Hamilton threw pill bottles out of a

window as Carmel police chased and stopped the vehicle. Police discovered pills, pill bottles and two handguns inside the car.

CPD worked with the FBI to investigate the case.

“When you point a gun at people during a robbery, someone can get hurt or killed — plain and simple. These guys stormed into a CVS and terrorized employees and customers just to get their hands on drugs. That kind of behavior puts innocent people at risk, and there’s no excuse for it,” FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O’Malley stated. “Now they’re doing federal time — and that’s exactly what happens when you use a gun to commit a violent crime. The FBI is going to keep working with our partners to find violent offenders and get them off the streets.”

Hamilton’s previous criminal history includes felony convictions for synthetic identity deception and carrying a handgun without a license, according to the DOJ.

Amazon Now special use permit approved

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com An Amazon Now delivery facility proposed in Carmel is one step closer to opening.

Carmel Board of Zoning Appeals Hearing Officer Dennis Lockwood approved a special use permit Aug. 24 for the online retail giant to operate a small-scale storage and distribution facility at 12208 Hancock St. Amazon Now delivers groceries and essential household items to customers in 30 minutes or less. The 6,800-squarefoot facility in Carmel is significantly smaller than Amazon’s traditional distribution facilities, which are more than 150,000 square feet on average, according to Nathan Eady, Amazon senior manager of economic development and public policy.

“We’re just taking up essentially a double suite within an existing light industrial building (in Carmel), and it functions much more like a small grocery store that is delivery only,” Eady said at the hearing.

Eady said Amazon doesn’t plan to make any exterior modifications to the building. Inside, it will update bathrooms to be ADA compliant and install shelving and refrigeration for its inventory.

Before approving the permit, Lockwood questioned how the facility, which only has 14 parking spaces, will accommodate 750 to 1,000 trips a day.

Eady said Amazon Now doesn’t have its own commercial fleet but contracts flex drivers to meet demand, much like DoorDash or Uber Eats. He said most of the time two or three drivers can meet demand, but at peak service hours — which typically occur around breakfast and dinner hours — six or seven drivers might be on duty.

“Right now, we are dispatching one driver for every customer order at a 1-to-1 ratio, and we’ve very conservatively modeled the traffic to reflect that,” Eady said. “But we think pretty soon we’ll be able to have two or three orders taken by a single driver, and then we’ll be able to bring those traffic volumes back down.”

HSE senior’s decision to play volleyball pays off

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Hamilton Southeastern High School senior volleyball player Brooklyn Sigler was faced with a difficult choice.

“After giving up soccer and gymnastics, I had to decide between basketball or volleyball,” said Sigler, an outside hitter who started playing volleyball at age 10. “After getting cut from my middle school volleyball team (Fall Creek Junior High) in both seventh and eighth grade, I knew I had a choice — give up on volleyball and play basketball like the rest of my family, or play volleyball and work for it. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, but my heart was telling me to choose volleyball.”

Sigler, whose brother Logan played basketball for Fishers High School and now plays for DePauw University, said she was told she could either be a practice player on the 14-and-under top team for Rev club and work for playing time, or start on the 14-under second team.

“I knew I was capable of earning a spot on the (the top team), so I pushed myself in every practice and trained as hard as I could,” Sigler said. “Eventually, I earned my spot as the starting outside hitter. That next year, I arrived at HSE and the rest is history. I’ve kept that chip on my shoulder throughout my high school career. I love having the underdog mentality

The 5-foot-11 Sigler, who has made a verbal commitment to play volleyball for Ohio University, had 209 kills last season.

Sigler, who is in her second season on varsity, said the team’s primary goal is to win the IHSAA Class 4A state title.

“However, beyond winning, I want to see myself and my teammates grow and improve throughout the season,” she said. “I want to push myself to become the best player and teammate I can be while encouraging everyone around me to do the same. Most importantly, I want this season to be filled with laughter, love, competition and memories that we’ll carry with us beyond the season.”

Local school leaders weigh state voucher costs

With numerous school districts proposing referendums and cutting costs in the wake of the 2025 state property tax law, school funding has become a topic of interest — including Indiana’s school voucher program, which cost about $500 million in the 2024-25 school year.

Some area public school officials said that although they support school choice, they’re concerned education funding has not kept up with inflation, let alone the expanded voucher program, which adds to the overall cost of statewide education. However, a school choice advocate said Indiana’s voucher funding protocols are a model for other states.

Hamilton Southeastern Schools Superintendent Matt Kegley said each district in Indiana is affected differently by school choice scholarships, commonly called vouchers, and he respects the state’s decision to provide that funding.

At the same time, he said, vouchers can affect what’s available to the public school system overall.

HSE Chief Financial Officer Tim Brown likened state education funding to one big pie.

“Every time you cut a slice into that pie, that is less overall funding for a traditional public school like our school district,” Brown said. “What has happened over the years is the income thresholds by which families can qualify for these choice scholarships has been expanded by a pretty significant amount, where maybe going back to the 2021 school year, that amount was in the $48,000 to $50,000 range for a family of four, to where it sits today at over $244,000.”

Brown said as the income threshold for qualifying families increased, so did the number of students within HSE boundaries using scholarships. But that doesn’t mean those students left HSE or would have ever attended public school.

He said the students may well have gone to private school no matter what and voucher funding was “the icing on the cake.”

Westfield Washington Schools Superintendent John Atha agreed many voucher students likely would not be public school students anyway. He said when the program first was introduced in 2011, he was principal at the private Bishop Chatard High School in

“My experience is, we did not have a lot of families who were (choosing public schools) start using vouchers,” he said. “We just had families who were already in with us, who maybe got some relief.”

That means more students in the funding pool for education dollars. Atha cited a 2023 Indiana University study that showed about 70 percent of Indiana voucher students already attended private school.

“And those dollars have to come from somewhere,” he said. “What’s happened is, they have not expanded total spending on education — which is the state’s responsibility — to match the spending on the vouchers, especially for the added students who were already in private education.”

Carmel Clay Schools Associate Superintendent Roger McMichael said several changes in state funding for public education over the past 15 years — including expansion of the voucher program — have been implemented “at the expense of public schools.”

“I would like to see the State of Indiana get behind its traditional public schools,” McMichael said. “There’s not a lot of conversation about what’s best for a child. (When the voucher program launched), it was for kids in a failing school who can’t get out. Now the conversation is, ‘Everybody gets a voucher.’

This whole conversation is about money.

It’s not about the interest of the child.”

Some of the schools receiving voucher funds are for-profit entities, McMichael said. Many of them are not held to the same set of standards as public schools, which are required to publish their budgets, answer to publicly elected school boards and provide special education services.

“Private schools don’t have to play by those rules,” CCS Superintendent Thomas Oestreich said. “I understand that families make decisions they believe are the best for their children, and I respect that. I respect choice. However, choice without accountability is not an efficient way to spend taxpayer dollars.”

Institute for Quality Education President and CEO Betsy Wiley countered that Indiana’s funding system for school choice scholarships is great just the way it is, and actually is a model for other states.

“The job is to fund and educate all of Indiana’s kids, and so (lawmakers) have been strong supporters in all of their policies in terms of dollars following the child to the school that they go to,” she said. “That philosophy held true in the establishment of the voucher program and how that funding took place.”

Wiley noted that the money follows the child no matter what school they choose, including another public school that isn’t their home district. She said the general belief that tax money should go to public institutions is an idea teacher unions have promoted. However, Wiley said, the funding belongs to the

students and their education.

She supports universal vouchers, with no income threshold.

“I believe that every student in the state of Indiana should be given access to their education funding that the state has allocated,” she said, noting that if students from wealthy families attend public school, they’re funded and nobody complains.

In response to concerns about reduced funding for public schools, Wiley — who was former Gov. Mitch Daniels’ deputy chief of staff and worked many years in the Statehouse — said she has never heard anyone in public education suggest that education is adequately funded.

“Every time, it’s, ‘We need more money,’” she said. “I think that it’s an interesting question because there’s not really data out there that suggests more money equals greater academic outcomes.”

She said the appropriate level of education funding is something for state lawmakers to determine, but the state should stick with its model of funding the education of all students, regardless of where they go to school.

BY THE NUMBERS The Indiana Department of Education website has details about the school choice scholarship program, including how many students within each public school district use school vouchers to attend a private school or another public school.

Westfield Washington Schools reported that for the 2025-26 school year, 776 students used a voucher to attend a non-WWS school — an increase from the 2024-25 level of 302.

According to the state DOE’s annual report on school vouchers, at HSE Schools, 1,400 students within district boundaries used school choice scholarships to attend a different school in the 2024-25 school year.

Brownsburg Community Schools Corp. had 765 students use vouchers; Carmel Clay Schools had 541 students; MSD of Lawrence Township had 1,655; Noblesville Schools had 582; and Zionsville Community Schools had 166.

Ukeladies spread music, joy

By Mark Ambrogi Mark@youarecurrent.com The Ukeladies began as a way for a group of women to share their love of music.

Six years later, they regularly perform at senior living centers as well as farmers markets, adult day cares and other venues.

The group started with three members — Theresa Miller, Lisa Hobson and Susan Breivogel — during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

“We thought we would play with our grandchildren, but we quickly learned our grandchildren don’t want to play the kind of music we want,” Miller said.

The group shifted to the goal of playing a concert by Christmas 2020 for Zionsville resident Lisa Hobson’s mother, who was in a senior care facility. With COVID-19 restrictions, many senior center residents were isolated.

“We’re obviously not musicians,” she said. “We just enjoy the music and playing together. We thought it was something we could share with other people, especially those who were a captive audience in the care facilities.”

Another ukulele group disbanded and some of those members joined. The group rehearses at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Carmel, where Miller and a couple other women attend.

There are 15 members in the Ukeladies, but not everyone makes every performance or rehearsal. Some might be traveling or spending the winter in a warmer location.

“Most of the women are in their mid70s,” said Miller, a 74-year-old Carmel resident.

Miller said she arranges the performances and provides song sheets for the

residents to make the experience more interactive. The group usually performs twice a month, with additional gigs at Christmas time.

The group plays music primarily from the 1960s and early 1970s.

“We create five setlists each year,” Miller said. “We’ll mix it up. We’ll do some soul songs, Motown, the old rock stuff, the Beatles, Elvis (Presley), anything we can actually perform and fits our voices.”

Hobson and Breivogel were among the women who took ukulele lessons at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts.

“Theresa is really good at recruiting members,” Hobson said.

Carmel resident Holly VanSlambrook, who has known Miller for years, is one of the members who just sings.

“She ran into my husband and asked if I wanted to sing with the group,” VanSlambrook said. “I’m trying to play the ukulele at home. I’m not confident enough to bring it to rehearsal. I’ve been so amazed by the impact it has at these senior facilities. I think it has to do with the fun, loving, light-heartedness of the group. We’re all older like them and we do music that evokes memories. We’ve had people come up and say this is the most fun I’ve ever had here and comments like that.”

Miller said some residents will get up and sing with the group.

“We love it when they dance,” she said.

Miller said the Ukeladies are working on updating their group Facebook page.

The growth of the City of Carmel has closely mirrored the growth of the Carmel Clay Historical Society, and both have followed a remarkable journey.

CCHS was founded just before the U.S. celebrated its bicentennial in 1976 – the same year Carmel became a city.

As someone who grew up in this small town in the 1950s, I remember the tremendous pride our community experienced when Carmel took this step.

I felt that same spirit the year before, when third graders encouraged adults to “Save the Depot.” After about 150 people formed the Carmel Clay Historical Society in 1975, the aged Monon Depot was restored and became our first historical museum.

Over the past 50 years, our city grew beyond anything we imagined, with outstanding schools, venues, playgrounds, parks, beautiful streets and memorable events. During that same time, CCHS has expanded into an impressive three-story museum connected to the beloved historic Monon Depot, offering a wide range of exhibits, presentations and events for a variety of visitors.

For both the City of Carmel and the Carmel Clay Historical Society, the support and generosity of our active, connected community members have been the foundations of our success.

When citizens are engaged, ambitious and hardworking, great things happen.

His response was always the same.

“That’s not my strength, that’s not what I do,” he said. “I just blew it off.”

To him, it seemed like bragging.

However, as the Carmel resident’s Christian faith grew stronger, he finally became convinced his story might help others.

Among those who swayed him was his late friend and homebuilder Paul Estridge. After Burrell was on Estridge’s podcast, “Survive and Advance,” Estridge said he should share his story more.

“Paul said, ‘Do you ever think maybe that’s why the good Lord kept you around to share that story to help others?’” Burrell said.

The final push came when a man came to cut his lawn who knew an author, David T. Lee, from his church who might help. “Bart’s Heart: A Journey of Family, Friendship, Football and Faith,” which was co-written by Lee, a medical doctor, was released in late June.

Along with his faith, Burrell leaned on his athletic background. The 1977 Carmel High School graduate, along with close friend Mark Herrmann, helped lead the Greyhounds to their first state basketball title as seniors. The two then went on to Purdue University where quarterback Herrmann and his favorite receiver Burrell led the Boilermakers to three consecutive bowl victories.

“I just went back to my football days and said, ‘OK, if you’re going to win, you’ve got to think you’re going to win,’” he said. “If you go into the game thinking you’re going to lose, you’re probably going to lose. So, I had to stay positive.”

Burrell, 67, approached his medical journey like it was the biggest game of his life because, of course, it was. Burrell figured he was a perfectly healthy person before his health issues began in 2000. He began having trouble breathing, and it kept getting worse.

Burrell, who retired from his wealth management position with Merrill Lynch in April, was diagnosed with amyloidosis, a disease where abnormal proteins build up in the organs. Without treatment, he was told he likely had less than six months to live.

“You create a protein you can’t get rid of. Mine went to the heart, so it’s called cardiac amyloidosis,” he said. “I ended up having a stem cell transplant in the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (Minn.). It’s a very rare disease, it’s like the same odds as getting struck by lightning.”

The average life expectancy for cardiac amyloidosis is one year and three months.

Fifteen years later, Burrell started to have heart problems from the damage that was done. His cardiologist had moved to the Mayo Clinic in Jackson-

ville, and Burrell learned he needed a heart transplant in the fall of 2021.

“The Mayo Clinic had stopped doing heart transplants for several years because they weren’t successful, but they wanted to start doing it again,” he said.

“They thought I’d be a good candidate because I’ve been going at least once or twice a year for checkups, so they knew me very well. In retrospect, they knew I would do what they told me to do and they knew my wife, Nancy, was a good caregiver.”

Doctors determined he also needed a liver transplant because blood had backed up there.

Burrell said combined liver and heart transplants are extremely rare in the U.S. He asked his medical team if that was because they were unsuccessful.

“They said, ‘No, it’s because you have to be sick enough to qualify for the organs, though healthy enough to survive a 15-hour surgery. You’re in that window of opportunity now and you don’t want to miss it,’” he said.

Burrell had the transplants in March 2022.

“I’m fortunate that I feel good now,”

An internal medical doctor, David Lee turned to writing after retiring in 2022.

“My second book had just been released, and I started praying the previous day for God to tell me what he wanted my next book to be about,” said Lee, who wrote two inspirational books about a fictional Ohio State football player.

A friend from church, who had heard Burrell’s story and encouraged him to write his book, told Lee that Burrell was interested in writing his memoir.

“I think he recognized his story could be an inspiration to others, especially those who have a chronic disease, and how he used his faith, his friendships and family to help get him through all the difficulty he had with the treatment,” Lee said.

Longtime friend and former Carmel High School and Purdue football teammate Mark Herrmann said his friend’s story is an uplifting one.

“His ultimate goal was to highlight his journey and the challenges and obstacles that he faced, and was able to come out on the other side,” he said.

Herrmann said Burrell’s toughness helped him pull through.

“He’s as coachable as anybody,” he said. “He just followed the orders of the doctor to the nth degree and he was going to do anything to beat this.”

Congress can help flood victims Editor, Following the recent flood, many of us had the opportunity to visit with families across Hamilton County whose lives were instantly upended. Stories of generous neighbors, caring community organizations, selfless public safety officials and responsive local government are common themes, as is often the case when tragedy strikes here in Indiana.

As we move into the recovery phase, elected officials at every level ought to be looking for ways to make policy changes based on the lessons learned through the harrowing experiences so many of our neighbors have faced.

One such common-sense policy change, which can only be made by Congress, would create a new exception to the National Flood Insurance Program’s 30-day wait period. In the flood’s aftermath, we spoke with several new homeowners who fell into this coverage gap, designed to stop people from gaming the system by buying coverage right before a known storm. Sounds reasonable, perhaps. But in practice, families

who had purchased their properties less than 30 days before the flood, had paid their premium in full and were then blindsided by the storm are now left holding the bag through no fault of their own.

That means Hoosiers are paying for protection they can’t use, and that’s simply not fair.

It is important to note that in order for their residents to qualify for NFIP policies, states like Indiana must conform their laws and administrative rules to those of the federal program.

This federal program, established in 1968, is voluntary for states, and national standards do help make critical flood insurance available. Still, the last major update to the NFIP came nearly a decade ago, and closing a loophole that lets insurers off the hook when responsible homeowners need them most is just common-sense policy.

OK to question referendum Editor, Carmel’s excellent schools are one of our community’s greatest assets. But supporting public education should not require automatic approval of every request for additional taxing authority.

Recently, discussion surrounding the proposed CCS operating referendum has become unnecessarily charged.

Residents asking questions have been characterized as being “against kids,” unwilling to support public schools or “pulling the ladder up” behind them.

That framing discourages exactly the conversation voters should be having.

Two things can be true at once. SEA1 changed the financial reality for CCS. It also changed the financial reality for taxpayers. Before asking households to backfill lost government revenue with an additional tax levy, voters deserve to know: What expenses have been reduced or reprioritized? Is this a temporary funding gap or a long-term structural one? Voters should also under-

stand the full eight-year commitment, not simply the first-year estimate.

Superintendent Tom Oestreich has said CCS will not initially levy the maximum, with Current reporting that the rate is expected to steadily increase during the first five years. Meanwhile, CCS is considering approximately $56 million in separate capital projects.

Yes, capital and operating funds are separate. But capital decisions create operating expenses. New and expanded facilities require heating, cooling, cleaning, staffing, maintenance and repair for decades. Those future costs matter when requesting more operating revenue.

Taxpayers don’t experience government budgets one at a time. We pay the cumulative bill. Supporting our schools should never require setting aside reasonable questions about spending, priorities and long-term costs.

Annual eye exams matter Column by Jeremy Ciano When most of us think about annual checkups, we usually picture the family doctor or even the dentist every six months. For a lot of folks, annual eye exams often get pushed aside — especially for those who don’t wear glasses and assume their vision is “fine.” But an annual eye exam is one of the simplest, most affordable ways to protect both your sight and your overall health.

Vision changes occur gradually, so subtle shifts are easy to miss day-to-day.

A yearly exam catches those undetected changes early, whether it’s the need for an updated prescription or the first signs of something more serious. Conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy often develop with no early symptoms. Left unchecked, they can cause permanent vision loss. When caught early, most are manageable.

Comprehensive eye exams do a lot more than simply check whether you can read the bottom line on a chart, like

at the BMV or basic school screenings.

Because the eyes are the only place in the body where a doctor can directly view blood vessels and nerve tissue without surgery, an exam can reveal early warning signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a host of other systemic pathologies.

Children can benefit even more than adults. Undiagnosed vision problems can affect a child’s reading, focus and classroom performance — issues sometimes mistaken for behavioral or learning difficulties. A simple annual exam can rule out vision as the culprit and help set a child up for success in school.

Don’t wait for a problem to arise, make your eye doctor appointment part of your annual health routine, and give your vision the attention it deserves.

Evolution Motorwerks opens on 3rd Ave. SW

He said there were times when his father called his mother and asked what their son had taken apart that day.

Klimek followed that drive to attend college for automotive technology. He has spent the past 25 years in the field with positions from technician to operating partner and now shop owner.

The Zionsville resident opened Evolution Motorwerks Aug. 3 at 1020 3rd Ave. SW, Building A, in Carmel. The shop’s ribbon cutting and open house is set for Sept. 8.

“We like the location because of its close proximity to the center of Carmel, minutes from the Monon Trail, Civic Square, Main Street and the Arts & Design district,” he said. “Being located off of Third Avenue, the location is easily accessible with less traffic than say Range Line Road. We also enjoy the comfort of knowing Carmel is one of the safest cities in America. However, our location also offers a gated lot under video surveillance in the event a client’s vehicle must stay outdoors overnight.”

Klimek said one of his best friends and former colleague Scott Haselrig owns and operates a Zionsville shop called Revolution Motorwerks.

ATI takes on 1970s version of ‘Beehive’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurret.com For Rachel Dudt, it’s fitting that she returns to perform in Actors Theatre of Indiana’s season opener.

Dudt appeared in “Beehive: The ’60s Musical,” which opened the 2025-26 season. She will return in the sequel, “Never Can Say Goodbye: The ’70s Beehive Musical,” Sept. 4 to 20 at the Studio Theater at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

ATI is the third organization to present the show.

“We had such a good response from ‘Beehive,’ the ’60s version,” Dudt said.

“This is kind of an extension of that moving into the ’70s. I think this will be even more engaging with everybody because there’s such a variety. You have folk rock, hard rock and you’ve got disco. There’s a little something for everybody in there.”

Dudt will perform songs by Blondie, Ann Wilson of Heart and Helen Reddy.

In the ’60s version, she sang songs by Janis Joplin and Carole King.

“We’re not necessarily doing impersonations like we did last year,” Dudt said. “It’s just a little more of a flavor of the artists instead of being completely costumed as them as a tribute.”

Dudt said she has always loved Heart and gets to sing “Barracuda.”

“Heart has one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time, especially in the ‘70s when women weren’t really headlining groups,” Dudt said. “So, it’s cool we end Act 1 with a whole Heart medley.”

Performing Reddy’s “I Am Woman” is another special moment for Dudt.

“The arrangement is really cool and gets everybody involved, and it’s kind of like the female anthem of the ’70s,” she said.

Dudt said the ’60s version was more of a chronological depiction of that decade, and this version is more about the diversity of the musical genres.

“You get the folk rock with Linda Ronstadt and the glam rock with Blondie and some hard rock with

Kira Rangel performed in ATI’s “Beehive” last year, too. Rangel performed Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin songs in last year’s production.

“This time we’re all in basically every song, and there’s a lot of mashups, too,” said Rangel, who is based in the Quad Cities area in Iowa. “There’s sections by genre, so there’s rock, bohemian, country and, my favorite, funk.

It just takes you down memory lane, and with the costumes, it’s like you’re about to be transplanted to another time again.”

Rangel said she sings “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack, “Up the Ladder to the Roof” by the Supremes and “Le Freak” by Chic.

“I’m excited because we’ve never done it before. We get to try new

things and make it our own,” she said.

“This is the music I would hear Sunday morning when my mom was cleaning the house. That’s how I knew it was time because she would be blasting all these artists.”

Debbie Hill wasn’t in ATI’s “Beehive” last year, but this is her third ATI show. The Fortville resident was in “Sunset Boulevard” earlier this year and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” in 2019.

Hill said her parents listened to the show’s style of music.

“I’m enjoying a deep dive in and getting to sing a lot of female harmonies,” Hill said. “I’ve always been a big fan of Linda Ronstadt, so I’m excited there are two of her songs in there.”

Hill sings Ronstadt’s “Poor, Poor Pitiful Me” and takes the lead on one of the Supremes’ song.

B&B’s ‘27 season revealed

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.co Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre’s 2027 season features some old favorites along with three shows making their debut at the Indianapolis venue.

“This is one of the most exciting seasons we have had since the (COVID-19) pandemic with all-time crowd favorites like ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘Grease’ mixed with the Disney powerhouse ‘Frozen,’” Beef & Boards owner Doug Stark said of the Sept. 1 season announcement. “This season is going to keep our production staff working overtime.”

Shows making their Beef & Boards debuts are “The Bunco Squad,” “Frozen” and “On Your Feet.”

The season begins Jan. 7 with a comedy based in Indiana. “The Bunco Squad” follows a group of friends who roll dice together in Seymour for a night of Bunco, but it’s not always sure they will get the opportunity to actually play the game. “‘The Bunco Squad’ is very funny, and don’t we all need a good laugh to start the year?” Stark said.

“Grease,” which was last performed at Beef & Boards in 2019, starts Feb. 11.

The show, set in 1959, relives days of hot rods, diners and drive-ins. Memorable songs include “Greased Lightnin’,” “You’re The One That I Want” and “Summer Nights.”

Next starting April 8 is the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic “South Pacific,” set during World War II. “South Pacific” won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score. The score features “Some Enchanted Evening,” “Nothing Like a Dame” and “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair.”

“Frozen” follows with a May 21 start.

The musical is based on Disney’s Academy Award-winning animated film

“Frozen,” which tells of the perpetual winter brought on by Princess Elsa in her mountain kingdom Arendelle, and the efforts of her sister Anna and her friends to break the icy spell.

The story of “Always…Patsy Cline” and the country singer’s friendship with a fan named Louise Seger begins July 22. There are more than two dozen songs, including hits such as “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Sweet Dreams” and “Walking After Midnight.”

“On Your Feet,” the musical celebrating the true story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, opens Aug. 26.

Stark said “On Your Feet” is the show he looks forward to the most.

“The Latin rhythms grab each of us and make you join the conga line, whatever your age,” he said.

“Les Misérables” makes its return Oct. 7, 2027 to the Beef & Boards stage.

The classic musical was last performed there in 2013.

She said the expansion of services and the organization’s increased community outreach are two reasons for the recent increase in demand. The organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year is “Dancing with Our Stars,” which takes place at 6 p.m.

“A lot of our clients are at or below poverty levels, so we financially support their meals through a program that we call Sponsor a Meal, SAM for short,” Hudson said. “This event helps fund

that cause.”

The 12th annual “Dancing with Our Stars” features several locals dancing with professional dancers. Carmel resident Natalie O’Hara attended last year’s event as an audience member, and said she was “touched by it” because her parents volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years. She understands that the mission of the organization is about more than just food.

“I specifically remember that my dad would talk to people and make sure he had a friendly conversation with them so that they would not feel lonely,” O’Hara said.

When a friend nominated her to be one of the featured performers for this year’s event, O’Hara couldn’t say no.

She has been training with her partner, Zhivko Yankov, since May, and said there’s been a bit of a learning curve.

“My background was more with dance team-type dancing, so this ballroom thing was definitely different for me,” O’Hara said.

Atlanta band’s concert set

By Alex McCarthy alex@youarecurrent.com With a quartet of multi-instrumentalist songwriters, Atlanta rock band Improvement Movement writes songs in a variety of ways. Sometimes members split into groups and write in pairs.

Sometimes they simply jam for a while and see what comes of it.

Their newest album, “Your Perfect Real Life,” involved another key writing partner — the audience. The band’s recent experiences on the road heavily inspired the album, which was released Aug. 21 on ATO Records. Bassist Marshall Ruffin said many people come up after shows to tell them how their music impacted their lives.

“That’s a gift that people are giving us, just the explanation as to how our art affected their lives,” Ruffin said.

“And then there’s no way for it not to inform the next batch of music that we make, whether indirectly or very directly in some ways.”

They’re returning to one of the venues that inspired them, with a Sept. 18 show at Turntable in Broad Ripple.

“It’s very cool, and the canal is beautiful,” drummer Tony Aparo said. “(Indianapolis) feels like a good place for creative folks to be hanging out.”

That pattern of bonding with audiences and communities is vital to their goals as musicians. WHEREAS, pursuant to Indiana Code 13-26 TriCo Regional Sewer Utility (Utility) is a regional sewer district that owns, operates, manages and controls a sewage works and related facilities to collect, convey, treat and dispose of wastewater from residences, businesses, industries and institutions located within the boundaries of the Utility’s service area; and WHEREAS, Indiana Code 13-26-11 authorizes the Utility’s Board of Trustees to adopt by ordinance a just and equitable fees for sewer services rendered by the Utility, and may adjust its fees by ordinance after notice and public hearing; and WHEREAS, based upon a financial analysis conducted by Utility staff as a result of House Enrolled Act 1348, the Board of Trustees desires to implement a fee for FOG Facilities.

Now, therefore, be it ordained by the Board of Trustees of TriCo Regional Sewer Utility, Indiana: Section 1. Every FOG Facility whose premises are served by the sewage works shall be charged the monthly FOG fee of $45 per pretreatment device.

The fee is established to enable the Utility to recover from FOG Facility users the increased costs of operating and maintaining the sewage works.

Section 2. Prior Schedule of Monthly User Charges This ordinance shall be supplementary to Ordinance 05-12-2025. Nothing in the Ordinance shall be construed as limiting the applicability of the Utility's various use ordinances or other definitions or terms contained in other Ordinances.

Section 11. The invalidity of any section, clause, sentence, or provision of this Ordinance shall not affect the validity of any part of this Ordinance which can be given effect without such invalid part or parts.

Section 12. The revised rates shall become effective November 1, 2026, and thereafter.
