Atwell Suites hotel in Saxony moving forward By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com A planned four-story hotel in Fishers’ Saxony neighborhood that’s been on hold for two years is back on track after submitting new design plans. The Fishers Planned Unit Development Committee unanimously approved the architecture and site plan for Atwell Suites, an InterContinental Hotel Group brand planned at the northwest corner of E. 134th Street and Olio Road. Senior Planner Christy Cashin told the committee Sept. 2 that the hotel is part of a larger mixed-use project by petitioner Striving Legacy Fishers LLC. She noted that the developers have proposed two public art murals along the east and west of the building. Mindy Westrick Brown, representing the developer, said they appreciated the time to regroup and resubmit the proposal, which she said will lead the way for future development in that area.

“The murals were a great idea from staff, as well,” she said. “There’s some local heritage there with the railroad and the limestone accents. We were able to, with staff’s recommendation, add some lighting accents as well, which we think really make all sides of this pop. Given that it is a prominent corner, it needs to look good on all four sides, and so we were able to work with staff’s feedback.” The boutique hotel will offer 124 suite-style rooms, along with coworking and lounge spaces, a small patio and limited food and drink options. The project was put on hold in August 2024 when it became clear at that time that PUD Committee members were going to reject the plans. Committee members expressed concern about the design not meeting city architectural standards. Developers said they had to follow IHG branding. The site already is zoned for mixeduse development.

Bank pulls plans for new building on 116th Street By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Citizens State Bank has withdrawn a rezone request for a proposed new standalone building on 116th Street near Olio Road in Fishers. Senior Planner Christy Cashin told the Fishers Plan Commission Sept. 2 that the company abandoned plans for the new building a few days after an Aug. 17 Fishers City Council meeting, when the council tabled the proposed rezone. Councilors had expressed concern about drivers making left turns into and out of the site and wanted to change the proposal to a right-in, right-out access. Citizens representatives said that wouldn’t work for them. Following lengthy discussion that indicated the proposed rezone would fail, Mayor Scott Fadness suggested tabling the motion so city staff could negotiate options with Citizens and bring the issue back to the council. Citizens State Bank’s original proposal also had called for a drive-thru window, but the business changed the design to accommodate concerns that such a service would cause traffic issues.

The resubmitted design, which also modified the architecture from a modern style to a more traditional residential look, received a favorable recommendation in early August from the Fishers Plan Commission. However, some commissioners expressed interest in a right-in-right-out restriction, which carried over to the later council meeting. Citizens State Bank has offices in downtown Fishers near the Fishers Municipal Center. The proposed 4,400-square-foot standalone building on 116th Street was planned for a .83acre lot next to the Kroger on Olio Road, a site previously intended for a new Drive Planning Investment Firm office. The only structure on the lot now is an unoccupied house.

Jeff’s Bagel Run is opening its first Indiana franchise in Fishers at Allisonville Road just north of the 116th Street intersection. A post on the national chain’s website indicates that the new store at 11745 Allisonville Rd. is “coming soon.” A spokesperson said the restaurant should be open by the end of this year. Including the soon-to-open Fishers store, the franchise has 49 restaurants in Illinois, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Florida, Texas, Colorado and Nevada. Jeff’s Bagel Run started in Florida in 2019. According to the website, the founder, Jeff Perera, was unemployed and his wife asked him to make a bagel. He didn’t know how, but looked it up and started baking. Their first shop opened in Ocoee, Fla., in 2021 and they grew from there. “Every bagel is made from scratch in each store,” the website states. “The bagels are proofed overnight, boiled and baked throughout the day. No shortcuts. No freezers. The same process, every single day.” The menu offers different bagel varieties, both sweet and savory, along with spreads, coffee and other beverages. Rezone OK’d for Fishers District development By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com The Fishers Plan Commission gave a favorable recommendation Sept. 2 for a proposed rezone of about 3.5 acres for Phase II of The Yard at Fishers District — a piece of recently announced plans for a Fishers Fieldhouse, new headquarters for JD Sports America and new homes. Senior Planner Christy Cashin said the planned unit development rezone before the commission was for the residential portion of the proposal. The site plans show townhomes, two larger mixed-use buildings that combine residential and commercial, public outdoor spaces and a dog park. Buckingham Companies is the master developer for the Fishers District expansion, which is near the Fishers Event Center. In earlier presentations, officials said the residential piece, called Contrast | Fishers, will offer 167 apartments and 98 townhomes. Buckingham plans to break ground on the project this year with anticipated completion late 2028. JD Sports, a sports fashion retail

company that owns The Finish Line, has been headquartered in Indianapolis. It plans to move those offices into The Link building that formerly housed Navient financial services, with renovation work expected to begin in 2027. Another part of the project led by Buckingham is a new Fishers Fieldhouse, a 180,000-square-foot facility that will serve as the headquarters and practice facility for Indy Ignite professional volleyball team, along with youth basketball and volleyball leagues and tournaments. The Fishers Fieldhouse is expected to break ground this fall, with an anticipated opening in late 2027 or early 2028. The overall development, announced in June, is estimated to cost $169 million. Economic development agreements were approved mid-June by the Fishers City Council, providing a decade of tax abatements for JD Sports’ new American headquarters as well as city-issued bonds for Buckingham Properties. The rezone is expected to go to the Fishers City Council Sept. 21 for final approval.

Man charged after shooting, police chase By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com A Fishers man faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly shooting a firearm from his truck in front of two Lawrence Township elementary schools Sept. 2 around the time that students were let out for the day. Brenden King, 32, has been charged in Marion County Court with felony criminal recklessness, resisting law enforcement, possessing a firearm on school property, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and reckless driving. A jury trial is scheduled for December. According to the probable cause affidavit filed by Lawrence Police Department investigators, officers were sent to 63rd Street and Lee Road at about 3:45 p.m. Sept. 2 after a report of a man firing shots. The man had driven away before officers arrived, but an Indiana State Police trooper spotted the truck at 79th and Fall Creek. “The Ford pickup drove by him on the right in the ditch, off-roading into the grass,” the PCA stated. “The truck then pulled back onto the roadway in front of the car directly ahead of his police car. (The trooper) maneuvered around traffic to make a traffic stop on the Ford pickup. The truck then pulled back into the ditch driving erratic and dangerous. He then observed the truck driving into trash cans and anything else in the truck’s way while driving off the roadway.” The trooper terminated the chase due to heavy traffic. Investigators used license plate readers to track the vehicle.

Residents also called in reports of a similar trick driving erratically in the area of 79th and Sunnyside. Another officer directing traffic in a school zone at Oaklandon and Fox Road saw the truck speeding past. “The truck then drove through a construction zone where a new (roundabout) is being built,” the PCA stated. “There were construction workers working in the area at the time that also saw the truck drive through the roundabout.” The truck then was seen by another officer on Pendleton Pike, who reported it had front end damage and shredded tires. The truck still did not stop for police, but briefly stopped at a red light before continuing when the light turned green. “The vehicle eventually came to a stop near Sheila Drive and Pendleton Pike, where the driver eventually exited the vehicle,” the PCA stated, adding that the driver was arrested and placed in handcuffs. “Officers observed a rifle bag in the back seat of the truck in plain view. They also observed a black handgun in plain view in the front seat of the truck.” The PCA states that officers were able to get security video from the elementary schools showing the truck in the area and the driver shooting out the window. Officers also retrieved shell casings from the area in front of the schools. The PCA stated that King had bloodshot and glassy eyes. Police obtained a warrant for a blood draw to test for substances.

Bringing nature home Commentary By Stephanie Carlson There is something about September that makes us ready for a change of season. Mornings become cooler, days grow shorter, our landscape shifts from bright summer blooms to an autumn palette, and we find ourselves pondering pumpkins, mums and cozy evenings outside. Fall decorating doesn’t have to mean filling the house or front porch with a store-bought scenery. Some of the most beautiful ways to welcome the season can be found right outside our doors. Cut a few hydrangea blooms. Gather interesting branches, grasses and seed heads from the garden. Fill a bowl with small gourds or pinecones. Add a living plant to a room that needs a pop of green. Simple touches do more than decorate our homes — they help us stay connected to nature as we begin spending more time indoors. That connection is at the heart of a movement called biophilic design. It sounds complicated, but the concept is actually very simple: Humans have an inherent connection to nature, and the spaces where we live and work tend to feel better when nature is part of them. Biophilic design can be as simple as placing a plant near your desk, opening the blinds to let in natural light, incorporating wood or stone into your home, displaying flowers cut from your garden or rearranging furniture. That’s important at home, but it matters in our workplaces, too. After all, many of us spend most of our waking hours inside. As we bring nature indoors this fall, it’s also time to think about what’s happening outside.

One of the biggest mistakes we make in our gardens is believing everything needs to be perfectly cleaned up before winter. Instead of cutting every perennial and ornamental grass to the ground, consider leaving some standing through winter. Seed heads can provide food for birds, stems can offer habitat for beneficial insects, and ornamental grasses look beautiful when covered in frost or snow. Fall is a wonderful time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials. Cooler temperatures reduce stress on plants while the soil remains warm enough for roots to become established. If you envision tulips, daffodils and other spring bulbs next spring, now is the time to plant. Let your garden change with the seasons. Bring a little of it indoors. Plant something that attracts butterflies. Put a tree where you can see it from your favorite chair. Grow herbs near the kitchen and add greenery to the place where you work. Although none of these things are complicated, together they can change the way a space feels. That’s what Rooted in Nature will be about. CHS setter benefits from high volleyball IQ By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel High School senior setter London Evans was born to be a volleyball player. “I loved it from the beginning,” Evans said. “I grew up peppering with my sisters and tagging along to their practices that my mom coached.” Evans’ mother, Erin, played at Indiana University. Her oldest sister, Emerson, plays for Marian University, and her sister Lauren played two seasons at Butler University before transferring to Belmont University this season. Although her father, Brian Evans, was a Big Ten Most Valuable Player for the Indiana University basketball team and is a former NBA player, London Evans said it wasn’t hard to give up basketball after sixth grade. “There was never a doubt that I loved volleyball more,” said Evans, who was coached by her mother until age 12. As a junior, Evans had career-highs in assists (473), digs (476) and kills (221). First-year CHS coach Kati Weir said Evans has been a tremendous leader. “She sets an example both on and off the court and runs an exceptional offense,” Weir said. “As a setter, she has a high volleyball IQ, and her decision making has played a huge role in building confidence in our

hitters. It’s been fun to see her willingness to take on whatever role is best for the team and gives us the best chance to be competitive. Whether she is swinging and setting, just setting or back on the serving line, she is competing. That standard is contagious and I’ve enjoyed watching that continue to grow in our program.” The 6-foot Evans, who has been a setter since she started playing, said Weir has done an exceptional job helping her find her role on the team. “We all have roles unique to us and they’re all equally important for our success as a team,” Evans said, “At my position, being a vocal leader is a big thing, so that’s what I aim to be each time I’m on the court with my teammates.” As of Sept. 7, the Greyhounds had a 9-2 record. “This year has been a lot of fun so far,” Evans said. “We all love playing for coach Weir and we are really excited about what we are building. ‘IT’S NEVER IF — IT’S WHEN’ Fishers residents honored with American Red Cross award

By Arianna Hunt arianna@youarecurrent.com On a chilly Sunday after Valentine’s Day, 19-year-old Alexander “Zander” Wright of Fishers worked his usual weekend shift as a front desk associate at the Westfield LA Fitness. Between scanning members in and making phone calls, Wright took a quick break to look at his phone. That was when Terri Charles of Carmel approached him and frantically said they needed help in the pool — a moment that would lead to Wright and City of Fishers Aquatics Manager Paula Hardin receiving American Red Cross Lifesaving Awards. “My first thought was someone dropped their phone in the water, so I was not highly concerned,” Wright said. That changed the moment he saw Terri’s husband, Rick Hamilton, unresponsive in the water. After completing initial emergency assessments, the then-college freshman alternated between performing CPR and using an AED for several minutes before EMS arrived. “When I started working on him … I knew he wasn’t going to die,” Wright said. “No matter how long it would take me, I knew he wasn’t going die.” As a longtime lifeguard at Geist Waterfront Park in Fishers, Wright participated in daily training, often led by Hardin, to prepare for emergency situations — never realizing the full impact those skills could have. “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart … for what you did. You saved my life, buddy. You kept me going. And from what the doctors tell me, if it wasn’t for you, I’d have been dead,” Rick said in a video to Wright recorded from a hospital bed. About a month later, the unimaginable occurred when Wright’s co-worker came up to him and said, “It’s happening again.” In the cycling room, Wright found patron Mark Fischer on the floor with no pulse. This time, Wright was not optimistic about the outcome. “I was like, ‘He’s not going to survive,’” Wright said. “Statistically, he’s

not going to survive. But obviously, you can’t give up in that situation. I had to do everything I could.” Even after learning Fischer survived, Wright worried that the incident could have left permanent cognitive trauma. It wasn’t until an Aug. 7 ceremony when he received the Lifesaving Award for Professional Responders that Wright received news that Fischer was OK. “There were people there that I had never met, and my mom walks in and she goes, ‘Look who I found,’”Wright said. “And my mom goes, ‘It’s Mark’s wife.’ And she hugged me and was crying on my shoulder and it was so relieving because I hadn’t seen Mark since that incident.” Seeing both affected families in one

room brought to light the full weight of his training. “It was crazy, because honestly, to me, I’m just doing CPR. But that whole room of people — their lives would be different entirely if I didn’t step in and save them,” Wright said. “And it’s something that’s so easy for me to do that had such a large impact.” None of those lives would have been saved without Hardin, who received the Lifesaving Instructor Award, one of the highest awards presented by the American Red Cross, recognizing instructors who teach lifesaving skills that help save or sustain lives. Wright had two unprovoked seizures earlier in his life, which medically classified him as having epilepsy, but when

he applied to be a lifeguard, Hardin welcomed him anyway. “Paula accepted me and allowed me to lead the junior lifeguard camp,” Wright said. “And had it not been for that, and had it not been for the daily training, things could have gone very differently.” This summer, Hardin addressed lifeguard shortages by offering discounted certification courses at the Fishers Community Center. The program, which includes CPR and AED training, certified 120 lifeguards through the summer. “It’s the thing that I always tell my staff — It’s never if it happens; it’s when it happens. It may not ever happen to you, but it could happen to your coworker two years down the road. And we just always need to be prepared for that,” Hardin said. Editor, John Blackman’s (Aug. 25) letter was wrong on many points, but more importantly, it was wrong to frame immigration as a partisan issue. Reasonable people on both sides agree our immigration system needs reform. Fear-mongering will not help anyone. The Biden statistic cited is misleading when border “encounters” are presented as undocumented immigrants who entered and remained here. Encounters include people detained, expelled or removed and can include the same person more than once. Why don’t proponents of mass deportation discuss the Obama administration? Millions were removed during those eight years. Earlier this year, I met a farmer at the Statehouse during House Republican Intern Parents Day. Her son was an intern. When she asked why I was there, I explained that I opposed legislation expanding cooperation with ICE. We agreed immigration reform was needed. She told me about her farm’s main hand, who worked for her family more than 20 years, married and raised a family. His employers had spent years and considerable money helping him navigate a path toward citizenship. Farmers understand how important immigrant labor is to our food supply. Consider Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Houston homebuilder and father of three. ICE stopped his work van and an agent fatally shot him. DHS acknowledged that Araujo was not the intended target. The government’s account of why the officer fired remains under investigation. There is also an economic reality. A 2026 Cato Institute study estimates that immigrants living here illegally reduced government deficits by at least $1.7 trillion between 1994 and 2023. Why not fix the system? Make it practical for people to maintain legal status, pay taxes and follow the rules. Immigration reform doesn’t have to be partisan; it can be orderly, practical and humane. Spine center ‘tops out’ By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com On a blistering hot afternoon, a group of physicians, partners and local officials gathered at the construction site for the new Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine facility in Fishers to sign a beam that was then raised and installed in the frame of the building, marking the “topping out” of the facility, set to open in 2027. Guests took turns signing the beam Sept. 3 before a short ceremony at the construction site, 13680 Jack Walker Lane off 136th Street close to the Southeastern Parkway roundabout. During a short presentation before the beam was raised, Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said it’s an exciting time for Fishers, with a lot of growth in the area surrounding the new facility. He said roadwork was ongoing, but should improve traffic flow in the long run. “The Southeastern (Parkway) roundabout, over the next 90 days, will go through a transformation,” he said. “It should make it more efficient and, frankly, easier to understand how to get around it. We’re excited about that.” He said he also was excited to have Goodman Campbell be part of that growth. Dr. Jean-Pierre Mobassar of Goodman Campbell said the new center was part of the company’s strategic growth in Indiana. He thanked contractor Cornerstone, along with the builders and architects. “We are grateful to the City of Fishers for making this possible and welcoming us into this community,” he said. “We want to grow with you and take care of the people that live here and make it easier for them to be a part of our care.

Palladium to host Gramm farewell tour By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com At 76, Lou Gramm is tired of spending time in airports and not enough time with his cars. “I’ve been touring for 54 years, and I just think that takes up most of my summers and I miss my family during those times,” he said. “I also miss my biggest hobby, which is muscle cars. I live in Rochester (N.Y.), so the summertime is the only time I could drive those cars. We’re touring in the summer and when we get back in December, I just have to keep them in storage until the next time I can drive them.” Gramm, the original lead vocalist for Foreigner, is bringing his farewell tour to the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel for a 8 p.m. concert Sept. 26. “I’m a little tired of traveling because traveling is not as good as it used to be,” he said. “I’m concerned about airlines who cancel flights at a whim and let the dice roll where it may, and people are forced to stay overnight at an airport hotel and you miss an important meeting.” Gramm said it has made traveling more stressful. “We’ve had some really close calls,” he said. “We’ve had delays in flights we should have caught and we’ve ended up getting to the venue about 20 minutes before we’re supposed to go on.” Although it happened more than 20 years after the band’s eligibility, Gramm said it was gratifying for Foreigner to finally be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. However, he said he wished it had been before original members Ian McDonald and Ed Gagliardi had died. In addition, guitarist and founder Mick Jones was not in good enough health to be at the induction ceremony as he has been battling Parkinson’s disease for several years. “I enjoy looking back,” he said. “There were some good times, and even the times that aren’t so good are

worth looking back at because you learned something.” For Gramm, fate has intervened. Before joining Foreigner, Gramm was a member of Black Sheep, which had two albums and was invited to tour as the opening act with Kiss. A truck accident in late 1975 destroyed their equipment and the band was unable to make the tour because it didn’t have the money to quickly replace the equipment. During that time, Jones asked Gramm about joining his new band. Gramm first checked with Black Sheep members and they gave him their blessing to move on. Although he said he feels his talent played a big part in his success, he also feels he was in the right place at the right time. “I think fate intervened just as much and set my career where it is,” he said. Fate also intervened in 1997 when Gramm discovered he had a benign brain tumor, which required a 19-hour surgery. “It was very scary,” he said. “I did think for a little while that I was going to lose my life, but I also stayed deep in prayer and asked God if he wanted to take me, take me, or if he wanted me to continue to live and do the things I do. I would be OK either way as long as I knew that is what he wanted.” Gramm said the experience strengthened his Christian faith.

Family is important to Gramm as well. He is joined in his band by his brother Ben. “It’s been awesome,” Gramm said. “He’s not only a great dummer, but he’s a great guy to hang out with. We’re closer now than ever.” Besides his own farewell tour, Gramm has made some guest appearances with Foreigner. “I’m having a lot of fun playing shows with Foreigner,” he said. “It’s not the original Foreigner. It’s the new Foreigner and they’re great guys and great musicians.” Gramm said he has no problem with Foreigner continuing to play without any original members. “The audience really likes the band and I just think it’s a great situation for everyone,” he said Gramm said he’d be remiss if he didn’t say one of the reasons is it helps the music he helped create live on. Gramm’s concert consists of a couple of his solo songs and Foreigner hits, such as “Cold as Ice,” “Hot-Blooded” and “I Want to Know What Love Is.” He enjoys performing all the songs, but one is extra special. “I co-wrote most of them, so they’re like my kids,” he said. “But I’ve got to say ‘Juke Box Hero’ is the one. The annual Center Celebration supports the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts’ efforts to educate and uplift people of all ages. For new Gala co-chair Carl Butler, that mission is personal. Butler, a longtime Carmel resident, grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago in a family with modest means. His family recognized his talent as a flautist, though, and used what they had to support him. That led to a scholarship to Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, which then led to him earning a degree from IU’s Maurer School of Law. None of it would have been possible without music, and he wants to ensure that the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts’ educational programs continue to help young people like himself. Every time a young person gets a new opportunity as a result of the Center’s programming, Butler knows that it can be life-changing. “These are not small moments; they are the moments that shape who people become,” Butler stated via email. The Center Celebration takes place at 5 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Payne & Mencias Palladium in Carmel. The Bacon Brothers — featuring actor Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael, a composer — will headline the evening. Artistic Director Michael Feinstein will host the event, which will include cocktails, dinner, a live auction and two after-parties.

Tickets are still available at thecenterpresents.org/Gala. Butler and Jeff Goens are the newest co-chairs for the gala, joining David and Annette Greene. Butler and Goens are attorneys who have been concert season subscribers at the Center since its opening. Butler and Goens are more than just patrons, as they also play in the Indiana Wind Symphony, one of the Center’s six resident arts companies. Butler, who also serves on the Center’s board of directors, plays flute and Goens plays alto saxophone. They’ve performed on the Palladium stage several times, and Butler recalled the awe he felt when he played there for the first time. “I remember sitting on that stage thinking how absolutely gorgeous the hall was, and what an incredible blessing it was to have such a world-class venue right here in central Indiana,” Butler stated in an email. The Greenes are in their second and final year as co-chairs, and David recently joined the Center’s board of directors. One of his main motivations was to help young people get opportunities in the arts like Butler got when he was young. “Over the years, I’ve come to truly believe in the value (the Center) brings to our community,” Greene stated via email, “not only through its incredible programs and performances, but through its commitment to making the arts accessible and meaningful to so many people.”
