5 Smart Reasons for Keeping Your Dog on a Leash Does your dog practically do cartwheels when you pick up the leash or mention the word walk? While fenced backyards and leash-free dog parks can provide places for our dogs to run wild, there are good reasons to keep your pet leashed in public places, including our parks, no matter how wellbehaved your dog is. Here’s why: 1.
It’s the Law – the Town of Zionsville has a leash ordinance. Leash laws are in effect for the safety of your dog and those around them. This can be the most compelling reason to leash your dog – it is required!
2.
Cars – It’s devastating for all involved when a dog gets hit by a vehicle. Even well-behaved dogs may suddenly run in the path of a moving car or not be seen by someone backing up in a parking lot.
3.
Greetings and Salutations – When your pup is leashed and greets another leashed pup, the dogs are usually on good behavior. Many people are frightened of dogs, just as not every dog is friendly to other dogs. The Zionsville Parks and Recreation Department supports the Yellow Dog Project (https://ultimatepetnutrition. com/yellow-dog-project). Having your dog on a leash means you are respectful of others.
4.
Loss Prevention – Dogs who accompany their people on leashes are less likely to get lost. For example, you can stop your dog from chasing after a cat. They won’t go on solo exploratory missions and you’ll know exactly where they are and what they’re doing.
5.
Preventing Them from Eating Something They Shouldn’t – We know dogs explore the world with their mouths and some of them are very food-oriented. Eating garbage, items from strangers and non-edibles can lead to upset stomachs and disease.
Did you know? Zionsville is getting a dog park! Construction on the 3.5 acre-dog park at Heritage Trail Park is expected to be completed by the end of 2020.

In The Know Oak Street Sewer The construction of the sanitary sewer along Oak Street has been temporarily halted at Lakeview Drive and westward due to the discovery of a Vectren gas line that was not previously identified, or a proper location accurately represented. The excavation at the intersection of Lakeview Drive and Oak Street has been protected using steel plates until a plan to avoid the conflict of the gas line has been developed. All parties are working on a solution to allow this important project to continue. The sewer will be located on the north side of Oak Street and will extend west of Cooper Road traveling east to just west of Irish Hill.
North-South Connector Z’Gravy Chase The annual Z’Gravy Chase takes place on Thanksgiving morning at 8 a.m. and benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Boone County. This year runners and walkers can participate live (capped at 1,000 spots) or virtually and the course options include a 2-mile run/walk, a 4-mile run/walk or a 5K virtual run/walk. All proceeds benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Boone County helping them continue their work of offering programs that enrich the lives of local youth. Registration is available online: https://zgravychase.org.
As part of the North-South Connector project, CR 875 East between CR 550 South and CR 575 South is closed to traffic through November 30, weather dependent. his project involves a new roadway segment that will connect the intersection of CR 850 East/Cooper Road with CR 875 East to the north. The design includes a roundabout at the intersection of CR 850 East/Cooper Road and Oak Street and a roundabout at the intersection of CR 875 East and Whitestown Road.

CURBSIDE PICKUP FOR FALL LEAVES Our Street Department crews drive leaf vacuum trucks through town in the fall. Just follow these simple steps to help keep them moving efficiently: Please move your leaves into long narrow piles right up against the curb. The vacuum’s hose won’t reach farther into your yard. LEAVES ONLY. Remove all sticks, pine cones, gravel, etc. that could clog things up. Park your vehicles off the street, if possible, so the trucks can get to the curbs easily and clear more yards faster.
This service runs throughout the fall so you don’t have to wait and prep all at once. There is no designated pickup day or regular schedule for your neighborhood.
REMEMBER: BURNING LEAVES IS ILLEGAL IN ZIONSVILLE. WE WILL RECYCLE THEM FOR YOU.
