Hunger study shows food needs throughout central Indiana news@youarecurrent.com A survey of food assistance needs in central Indiana shows that the rate of “very low” food security throughout the region — regardless of county line — is 37 percent of the population.

The study was conducted by Indy Hunger Network in partnership with Central Indiana Community Foundation, Indiana University Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the City of Indianapolis Office of Public Health and Safety. This year marked the first time the survey broadened its scope beyond Marion County to include all nine central Indiana counties, according to a news release.

In addition to the 37 percent “very low” food security rate, the survey found that more than half of central Indiana households experienced some level of food insecurity during the 2024–

25 study period.

“Hunger doesn’t look like you think it would,” stated Kate Howe, executive director of Indy Hunger Network. “It’s your employees, your neighbors, the people you pass by every day. This study shows it’s more prevalent and pervasive than many realize.”

This year’s larger sample size included 1,300 respondents from all nine central Indiana counties. About half were Marion County residents. About 60 percent of all respondents were employed, 86 percent lived in a household with at least one wage earner and 6 percent reported they were unemployed.

“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Marion County and surrounding counties have such similar rates of food insecurity,” stated Jennifer Bartenbach, president and CEO of CICF. “We are the most interconnected region in the state. But luckily that also means when

we empower more of our neighbors to afford and access healthy food, the entire region prospers. With major funding cuts underway, now is the time for philanthropy to help expand some of that access.”

According to the news release, federal funding cuts and freezes stand to worsen trends captured in the survey, placing added strain on low-wage households, the food assistance system and communities. The study’s data will be used to align resources, strengthen provider networks and guide investments.

Chris Center rebrands to Kindling Minds news@currentnoblesville.com The Chris Center, a nonprofit that works to strengthen youth mental wellness in Hamilton County and Marion County schools, announced that it has rebranded to Kindling Minds.

Kindling Minds was created in 2021 as The Chris Center by Nancy Elbert. It was named after Elbert’s brother, Chris Elbert.

“We knew we needed a name that more accurately reflects our mission, work and future, and we also wanted a name that stays true to Chris Elbert’s memory and legacy of compassion, community and empathy,” Kindling Minds Executive Director Sandra

Moreira stated. “Kindling Minds does all that.”

Moreira said that although the organization has rebranded, it has the same mission to help teens and pre-teens in central Indiana build resilience and improve mental wellness through research-informed programs rooted in connection — with animals, nature and art.

“We have a new name, but we have the same staff, board and volunteers who truly spark connection and ignite hope,” Moreira stated.

Kindling Minds has three programs in Marion and Hamilton county schools, including Noblesville, Westfield, Fishers and Carmel. It served

nearly 700 teens and preteens in 2024.

The organization’s PAWS Wellness Support Program teaches and models skills for stress-reduction, joy and social connection through registered dog/ handler teams and encourages students to use the power of the human-animal connection in their lives.

Its Mindful Arts Program builds mindfulness, connection, self-expression and self-regulation through creative artmaking.

Through a partnership with Stone Farm, Kindling Minds’ Alpaca-Assisted Wellness Program teaches lessons about mindfulness, stress-reduction, empathy and social connection.

Hallett Sports & Entertainment has announced that President Larry McQueary stepped down from his position effective Oct. 31. Hallett owns the EHCL hockey team Indy Fuel and the Fishers Freight Indoor Football League team, both based out of the Fishers Event Center.

According to a news McQueary release, McQueary plans to pursue new opportunities outside of the organization.

“We thank Larry for his contributions and leadership during his time at Hallett Sports,” CEO Sean Hallett stated. “He has played a pivotal role in growing the business to where it is today.”

McQueary was involved in the Indy Fuel’s relocation to the Fishers Event Center, which recently kicked off the team’s second season at the venue.

Overcoming fear

Art Center features solo show

northindy@youarecurrent.com Artist Sonnie Laviolette spent years avoiding painting. Although she studied visual design and marketing, she never took a college painting class and in the two decades she worked as a graphic designer in advertising, she explored all kinds of media but was always scared to take up a paint brush.

About 10 years ago, the Carmel resident conquered her fear and took a painting class at the Indy Art Center, eventually winning Best of Show earlier this year in the Indy Art Center’s annual student show. That led to her first solo show, “Abstract Connections,” which runs through Dec. 14 at the Indy Art Center, 820 E. 67th St., Indianapolis.

“I almost didn’t go, but once I walked in the door, I was hooked,” she stated in a news release. “I had a calmness after that, but at the same time, my creativity has really exploded. I’ve been told I’m a much nicer person when I paint.”

Seasonal slowdowns expected in housing market news@youarecurrent.com New home permits are expected to take a seasonal pause as winter approaches.

According to a breakdown of new home permits issued in the nine-county Indianapolis region by the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis, new home permits increased 1 percent in September 2025 over September 2024.

According to the latest data, 7,911 permits were issued across central Indiana through September 2025 — up slightly from 7,797 during the same period in 2024. Although activity eased slightly this fall, the region continues to outperform broader U.S. housing trends, which showed a dip in both housing starts and permits heading into the fourth quarter.

“After a strong summer, we’re seeing the market take a natural pause as builders recalibrate for the end of the year,” BAGI CEO Chris Hancock stated.

“Our members are focusing on deliver-

ing quality, well-timed inventory and maintaining disciplined production in response to fluctuating interest rates and affordability pressures.”

According to BAGI, a slowdown mirrors broader trends reported by the National Association of Home Builders.

Builders across central Indiana have focused on strategic pacing and diversification — like quick-move-in and custom homes — designed to meet fluctuating buyer demand.

“Permits are an early signal of builder confidence,” Hancock stated. “While national data shows a pause, central Indiana’s consistency demonstrates our market’s underlying strength — supported by population growth, local economic activity and buyers who remain committed to homeownership.”

Year-to-date new home permits include 925 in Westfield; 242 in Carmel; 304 in Fishers; 541 in Noblesville; 163 in Zionsville; 331 in Brownsburg; 68 in Lawrence; and 1,218 in Indianapolis.

Social Cantina’s sixth location opened Nov. 10 in Broad Ripple, bringing a new option for Mexican cuisine to College Avenue.

The new restaurant at 4573 N. College Ave. is owned by Bloomington-based Finney Hospitality Group and offers 4,500 square feet of dining space with a patio and outdoor mural by local artist Kimmy Wachtel.

The restaurant had a soft opening Nov. 7 and was filled with people sampling the menu of classic Mexican dishes, along with unique twists like the November Taco of the Month — Thanksgiving dinner tacos.

Guerin Catholic captures Class 2A state title

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com With a state title on the line, Guerin Catholic High School senior goalkeeper Ryan McGrath couldn’t help thinking of his late father.

“Honestly, (the) first (penalty kick), I was crying in the goal,” he said. “It was a really emotional moment for me. I wanted to get the job done because I know he’s up there watching McGrath me.”

McGrath composed himself to help the Golden Eagles win the IHSAA Class 2A state championship Oct. 31 at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis.

The 2A No. 2 Golden Eagles edged Bishop Chatard 1-0, winning 12-11 in penalty kicks. It set a record for most penalty kicks in IHSAA state finals history. The Golden Eagles (18-4) won Class A titles in 2013 and 2014.

McGrath’s father, Chris McGrath, was the Golden Eagles’ coach from 2016 until his death from COVID-19 complications at age 53 in 2021.

“Ryan dedicated the season to his dad,” said Guerin coach Jim Alvarez, who was an assistant under Chris McGrath. “Ryan’s a great kid. To be able to coach him and see him put so much into this season, he embraced it.”

McGrath, a Noblesville resident, even stepped in and made a penalty kick himself.

“I’m happy I converted mine, but I really wanted to save one at the end of the day,” he said. “I really wanted to get it done.”

Golden Eagles senior Christian Zermeno converted his penalty kick right before McGrath’s save.

The Golden Eagles had topped Chatard 4-2 Sept. 6. This time, the Trojans held Guerin scoreless in regulation and two seven-minute overtimes.

Alvarez said the Golden Eagles said a prayer all season to have the courage to be great.

“It doesn’t mean you do great things, it means you (do) the little things to get there,” Alvarez said. “It’s about the process. We practice PKs, but these are high school boys and you never know

when they step up and take a kick what is going through their mind.”

Alvarez said that the penalty kicks were by far the most in a game he’s coached.

“I think the longest I’ve coached a game in PKs is six,” he said. “You’re just hoping either they miss or the goalie makes the save. Ryan finally made the save. It was not easy on the coaches, but it was awesome. Kudos to Chatard. They played their tails off.

We probably outshot them 3-to-1 but couldn’t put them away.”

Alvarez credited senior leadership for the championship.

“We’ve had good teams the last couple of years but haven’t been able to take the next step,” he said. “One thing we focused on is being a team, not a group of individuals. No matter who was out there, a freshman or sophomore, the seniors continued to push.”

Golden Eagles senior Chris Jurewicz, who didn’t play because of an injury, received the Mental Attitude Award for Class 2A boys soccer.

“I felt bad for him,” Alvarez said.

“He had a hip injury and came back two weeks ago. He was playing significant minutes before (the injury). I felt bad for kids like that who couldn’t get in (the game), but he’s a great kid and he’s all about the team.”

STRATEGIC VISION Central Indiana Community Foundation maps out plan to empower community

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Since it began in 1997, Central Indiana Community Foundation has expanded its focus from supporting its two founding agencies — the Indianapolis Foundation and the Hamilton County Community Foundation — to providing its own services to the communities of Marion and Hamilton counties and, now, launching its first strategic plan to guide CICF’s mission beyond those borders.

President and CEO Jennifer Bartenbach said she launched the strategic planning process after she began her new position with CICF two years ago because she wanted to help the agency further establish its own identity.

“That’s what excited me about this role — I was able to create … our strategic plan for the community and redefine central Indiana and what that really means,” she said. “More people live in the eight surrounding counties than in Marion County, and that’s the first time that’s ever really been the case. And so, central Indiana is — we’re defining it as those nine counties — and it’s one of the fastest economic engines in the Midwest.”

A large part of the strategic plan, launched this year, focuses on bolstering central Indiana’s nonprofit organizations, which are vital to maintaining their communities.

“No matter who’s the political party in office, there’s a breakdown in our housing sector, there’s a breakdown in our food sector, there is a breakdown in our arts and culture, in our parks, in our trails,” Bartenbach said. “There’s a funding problem that exists, and philanthropy and nonprofits have to fill that gap and that need. When the social service sector can’t meet the needs of our homeless population, of our sick, of all of those, the nonprofits are what come into play and we’re seeing, right now, that it’s even more critical.”

She noted that the nonprofit ecosystem in central Indiana is robust — it’s responsible for $44 billion in annual economic activity and employs 10 percent of the region’s private sector.

Bartenbach said one part of the strategic plan helped map out how CICF can better facilitate connections throughout the region.

“For example, we are working on a survey of food assistance needs in central Indiana that used to be done by the Indy Hunger Network only in Marion County,” she said. “We reached out and said, ‘What would it take to include all nine counties in that?’ Because hunger is a problem in central Indiana, not just in Marion County.”

The results will be shared with community foundations in the nine counties to provide valuable data as they decide

where to focus resources.

The other three sections of CICF’s plan focus on the culture of giving, the nonprofit ecosystem, and people and potential. Each of the sections has related work plans to, for example, keep philanthropic giving inside of the region; help nonprofit leaders understand that they aren’t competing against each other for donations; and provide technical assistance, advice and training for nonprofit leaders to help them lead more effectively.

Since then, CICF has grown and evolved, but marketing director Kelsey Singh said it still supports the entities through the CICF Collaborative, which now also includes the Women’s Fund of Central Indiana and other philanthropic organizations.

Community foundations work to benefit their communities in different ways, Singh said. For example, community members can have philanthropy accounts through a foundation, which

works with the individual to better focus where an account’s funds are distributed.

“The community foundation knows the community really, really well, so they can give guidance to the community member,” she said. “They can talk to them about, like, ‘What are your values?

What are your interests? What are you hoping to accomplish?” And then they can kind of match them with organizations that have a need and that are doing good work.”

Community foundations also can provide grants to community organizations, with funding from different sources such as direct donations, endowments and service fees from individual philanthropy funds.

“We ask that (they) register in advance, so that we have an idea of what (they) need, so we have the right staff on hand,” she said. “Is it marketing? Is it accounting? Are you looking for fundraising support?”

The top concern has been funding and how to increase donor bases, she said.

CICF also reviewed and gave advice about marketing materials and helped some nonprofits adjust their budgets when federal funding was cut.

In addition to 1-on-1 meetings, CICF is hosting group office hours to help nonprofits connect and learn from each other.

“That is just a tangible example of what we’re doing right now, while people are feeling lost and trying to figure out where support can come from,” Bartenbach said, adding that CICF just launched a pilot leadership training program for nonprofit executive officers who are new to their leadership roles. “We worked with the Lilly School of Philanthropy to develop a yearlong training … around new executive directors and we brought a big group together. I’m actually sitting on it. One, just to see how it goes. Two, because I’m a new leader. It’s from large nonprofits to smaller nonprofits. It’s men, it’s women — it’s a very diverse group.”

Bartenbach stressed that CICF serves central Indiana primarily by providing valuable guidance and helping groups connect with each other so everyone can succeed together.

“Regional collaboration attracts more attention from funders,” she said. “It accesses more state and federal resources.

There’s a community foundation in every county in the state of Indiana. We’re not trying to be them, right? We know that they’re the experts, but we can help bring them together.”

Carmel dancer ready for second stint as IBC’s Sugar Plum Fairy

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Emily Geon is eager for her second turn as the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Indiana Ballet Conservatory’s presentation of “The Nutcracker.”

“I learned that it’s really important to have fun while you are doing it,” said Geon, a Carmel resident who is a high school junior who takes online classes.

“I think I was kind of stressed going into the technique part of it last year.

This year, I’m trying to focus more on the facial expressions and just having fun making the artistry.”

IBC’s production of “The Nutcracker” is set for Nov. 29-30 at the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Performances are 2 and 7 p.m.

Nov. 29 and 1 and 6 p.m. Nov. 30.

Geon plays the Sugar Plum role in the afternoon shows. Clara Crane, a Westfield High School junior, plays Sugar Plum in the evening shows. She played Sugar Plum in a special performance in Wabash last year.

“This has been my dream role and I’m excited to do it with my IBC family and just to get to perform at the Palladium,” Crane said.

Crane, who is in her 14th year as an IBC dancer, said she is trying to improve on last year’s performance.

Nora Woloszyn of Brownsburg, a fifth-grader, plays Masha.

“I like that we get to dance with the Nutcracker and I like all my costumes and fun ballet moves,” she said.

Meredith Drucker, a sixth-grader from Carmel, also has two shows as Masha.

“This is my first time dancing en pointe,” she said. “I’m looking forward to dancing with the Nutcracker and my friends.”

Kubicek, in his first year with IBC, has performed in “The Nutcracker” with other dance organizations.

“I like that it’s a full production. I haven’t done that for five or six years,” he said.

Charli Klink, a Westfield resident and online high school freshman, performs as the Spanish lead. She said the most challenging part is learning all the parts of the role and coordination.

She is the Spanish lead in the afternoon shows. She also plays the Snow Waltz, Arabian and Young Ladies.

Starla Karlsson, a Carmel resident who moved to the U.S. from Sweden when she was 4 years old, has been with IBC for eight years. The online

high school junior is playing the Spanish role for the third time, “I’ve been getting more comfortable with it every year,” Karlsson said. “I’ve been working on connecting with the audience.

Alyona Yakovleva, IBC’s founding artistic director, is eager to see how the dancers perform.

“Every year, each performance is different because of the cast, the new Mashas, new Sugar Plums,” she said.

“With the Carmel Symphony, it’s a completely beautiful experience for the entire community. I think we all try to polish and elevate ‘Nutcracker’ every year to a higher level.”

Tuttle concert set for Vogue

Molly Tuttle’s new album, “So Long Little Miss Sunshine,” is a departure from her bluegrass music.

Tuttle, who said she tries to be a chameleon with her music, will perform on “The Highway Knows Tour” at 7:30 p.m.

Nov. 20 at The Vogue in Indianapolis.

“This is my fifth album, so I feel like I’m at the place where I have quite a bit of material for the live shows, which is fun,” Tuttle said. “These shows have been really dynamic. Going on this musical journey that spans from playing bluegrass music around one mic to rocking out a little bit on some of the newer stuff off the new record, which expands into rock, Americana and country a little more.”

Tuttle, who plays guitar, toured with Golden Highway for three years. She said they decided to take a break while she released a solo record.

“So, it’s a new band lineup and new instrumentation,” she said. “We’re still playing a lot of the Golden Highway material. Some of it we revamped with

different instruments.”

Tuttle and Golden Highway won Grammy Awards for the albums “Crooked Tree” in 2022 and “City of Gold” in 2023. “So Long Little Miss Sunshine” has been nominated for a 2026 Grammy for Best Americana Album.

Her song, “That’s Gonna Leave A Mark,” is nominated for Best Americana Performance.
