“Many Hoosiers have been struggling with rising property taxes, and families across the state have justifiably sought relief,” Shonkwiler said. “As a low-tax conservative, I understand their frustration and feel their pain. While the legislature sought to combat this issue during the legislative session, I worked alongside my colleagues as we balanced direct tax relief with funding local priorities and ultimately passed Senate Enrolled Act 1. The legislation that was passed is still a work in progress toward meaningful tax relief, and I will continue seeking input from my constituents and working with my colleagues to provide permanent property tax relief for all.”

Despite the challenges, Jensen said the city is committed to providing citizens with the expected level of resources.

“I’m an optimistic person and love the city that I get to be mayor of,” Jensen said.

“We know that certain circumstances need to be addressed, and it will be a challenge for us going forward.”

Volunteers help organizations on Go All IN Day

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com More than 1,250 volunteers joined United Way of Central Indiana April 25 for Go All IN Day, a day of community SERVICE service across across seven Hoosier counties.

United Way of Central Indiana is a nonprofit that helps grow and support systems that accelerate financial stability for people living in or near poverty. Volunteers helped approximately 80 community organizations complete projects across Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Marion, Morgan and Putnam counties.

United Way’s Chief Fundraising and Engagement Officer Penny Keller said the organization started Go All IN Day five years ago to engage the community and promote volunteerism.

“The goal behind Go All IN Day is to have a big day that brings the community to-

gether and celebrates helping out,” Keller said. “There are projects across all seven counties that elevate volunteers and their importance and also provide opportunities for organizations in the community to make a real impact.”

In Hamilton County, volunteers from Fishers High School, Fischer Homes and Indiana Farm Bureau, among others, helped pack, sort and stock the food pantry at Grace Care Center in Noblesville. The Grace Care Center serves 500 to 600 families weekly through its food pantry.

Grace Care Center Foundation Executive Director Cara Augspurger said the center relies on nearly 300 weekly volunteers to keep the pantry operational.

“Go All IN Day is great because we get to have so many volunteers tackle some special projects that we don’t always have time to do,” Augspurger said. “We try to create a beautiful, dignifying shopping experience for families experiencing some tough times, and by having things looking shelf ready, ready to greet individuals, it’s just another way to provide that different dining experience.”

Jack Laurie Group marks 75 years

By Sara Palmer northindy@youarecurrent.com This year marks a major milestone for Jack Laurie Group. Founded in 1950 by a flooring installer with ANNIVERSARY a vision, the company is celebrating its 75th anniversary, with commemorative events but also with gratitude and a forward-looking spirit.

The story began in 1948 when Jack Laurie, a young entrepreneur at 25, trained at Armstrong Flooring’s Installation School.

Two years later, he launched Jack Laurie Floors out of a 250-square-foot garage in Fort Wayne. Initially focused on installing Armstrong vinyl asphalt tile, the company steadily grew, expanding to carpets, sheet vinyl and rubber flooring.

By the 1970s and ‘80s, the company had a loyal workforce and an increasingly strong reputation in the Fort Wayne commercial flooring market. Expansion continued into the ‘90s and early 2000s under the leadership of Jack’s son, John Laurie, who became president in 1995. Major milestones included a second location in Indianapolis in 1999, launching residential and specialty surfaces divisions and earning accolades such as the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the Indiana Growth 100 Award.

The company grew rapidly, acquiring multiple businesses, launching new service lines, including painting, epoxy and resinous flooring, and establishing training and apprenticeship programs. By 2024, Jack Laurie Group had nearly 450 employees and generated more than $75 million in annual revenue, with plans to reach $120 million and expand statewide.

“We’re all incredibly proud and thankful for reaching the 75-year milestone,” CEO John Laurie said. “There have been many keys to reaching this level of success, but if I had to pick just one, I would say the company’s dedication has been a driving force. Dedication to our employees, our customers and the communities we serve.”

The company that began with one man in Fort Wayne now completes more than 4,000 projects annually, with team members across Indiana. For Laurie, the company’s story is one of resilience.

“We have battled through 10 recessions,” he said. “We would pivot, implement changes, have difficult conversations and make tough decisions. Our ‘stick-to-it-

ness’ is what I’m most proud of.”

President and Chief Operating Officer Dave Foellinger echoed that sense of pride.

“We’ve always been a company that delivers our service through people,” he said.

“Beyond just being a commercial flooring company, we are a people development company.”

Foellinger watched the company grow from 40 employees to more than 400, with a culture grounded in core values — integrity, accountability, candor and teamwork.

“When you build a company with people who share these same values, and when those core values are non-negotiable, the quality and operational excellence flows through every part of the company’s daily operations,” Foellinger said.

That culture resonates with employees like Tyler Burns, business unit leader for Jack Laurie Group’s residential division.

“For me, the core values show up in the small, everyday things,” Burns said. “It’s people being honest about mistakes, stepping up to help without being asked and having real conversations — even when they’re tough. There’s a sense of ownership and trust that comes from everyone holding themselves to a high standard.”

The company will mark its 75th anniversary with a series of events for employees, families, vendors and customers. It began with a rebranding initiative in January, including a new logo and a refreshed look that reflects the company’s forward momentum.

Holy Pig Drop set for May 10

Patrick Propst, a minister at Faith Community Church, said the events center around the Holy Pig Drop at 3 p.m.

A field will be marked off and divided up into squares, which can be purchased for $25 per square. A pig will be released into the field, and the winning square will be determined by the first place the pig relieves itself. The winner will receive a cash prize of 10 percent of total sales, or up to $1,000.

“The whole purpose around it is to take a hard topic like mental health, addiction, depression and suicide and find a quirky way to bring them out into a public space so they can be talked about,” Propst said.

Other events at the park May 10 are a bake sale, fundraising dinner and mental health fair from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be a flag football game at Noblesville East Middle School May 9 between the Noblesville Police Department and Noblesville Fire Department. Admission is $10.

“The idea was to put a few things around the pig drop to create community and connection, but also to have the mental health fair as part of it with a variety of educational and support resources,” Propst said. “The fire and police departments will have a flag football game but also talk about how mental health affects those officers and their departments.”

SMC Corp. of America joined Noblesville Mayor Chris Jensen, Noblesville Tree Board members, volunteers TREES and neighbors April 25 to plant trees in the Wellington Northeast subdivision, a 2025 Noblesville Tree Planting Grant recipient.

Noblesville has been named a Tree City USA recipient by the Arbor Day Foundation for 35 consecutive years.

Last year, the city and SMC, the largest private employer in Noblesville, partnered to create a tree-planting grant program to coincide with Earth Day and Arbor Day. This year marks the second year of the grant program, which the Noblesville Tree Board leads.

SMC donated $2,500 to the tree planting grant program, which the City of Noblesville matched through Jensen and the common council.

Holly DeLong understands why the Indianapolis 500 and the month of May activities mean so much to 500 FESTIVAL so many people in the state.

“Growing up in Indiana, you always hear about the 500 Festival and just the Indy 500 in general,” DeLong said. “I wanted to be part of something that brought people together DeLong and unified people from all walks of life in a world that feels so divided. This is a great opportunity to bring people together and really make your mark and inspire the next generation.”

The 2021 Noblesville High School graduate is one of 33 500 Festival Princesses, whose selections are based on communication skills, leadership and commitment to service. Applicants must attend an accredited Indiana college or university DeLong, a senior majoring in marketing at Indiana University, learned about the Princess Program on her own.

“I went through my own journey of discovery (about the program), and I wanted to get involved,” she said. “I’ve always loved the electric atmosphere of the Indy 500, so I thought there is no better way to get involved.”

DeLong said the 500 Festival gives the Princesses the ability to create their own outreaches.

“I’ve loved getting involved with Habitat for Humanity. It’s a great organization to be part of,” she said.

DeLong especially looks forward to the May 24 AES 500 Festival Parade the day before the race.

“It’s a great way for us to celebrate and get excited and geared up for what’s to come that weekend,” she said.

DeLong has only been to the race once but has attended the parade several times.

“I’m really excited to see it from a different perspective this year,” she said.

Local nonprofit HAND Inc., which provides affordable housing and advocates for housing options in and NONPROFIT around Hamilton County, recently announced it is relaunching its volunteer program with a communitywide workday May 15.

The 100 Hands for HAND Volunteer Kickoff will take place at three HAND-owned housing communities in Carmel and Noblesville. Volunteers will help with outdoor beautification projects like planting, mulching and cleanup.

Kerri Hubble, HAND Inc. marketing and fundraising manager, said the workday also marks the launch of HAND’s annual 100 Hands for HAND fundraising campaign, which aims to inspire 100 individual donations throughout the year.

“The campaign begins with people giving their time to support HAND’s mission of providing quality housing where everyone can thrive,” Hubble stated.

HAND Inc. is coordinating volunteer registration in partnership with IMPACT Noblesville, a countywide initiative to promote service and community connection.

Volunteer locations that still have available slots to fill are: • Plum Tree Gardens (Noblesville) – 9 a.m. to noon • Pebble Brook Gardens (Noblesville) – 1 to 4 p.m.

“We’re thrilled to restart our volunteer program with such a meaningful event,” stated Andrea Davis, executive director of HAND. “This is about bringing the community together, creating pride in our neighborhoods and setting the tone for a year of collective impact.”

INDOT — Contract crews have begun work on an intersection improvement project at Ind. 38 and Moontown Road/Hinkle Road in Hamilton County. The project includes the installation of traffic signals and turn lanes. Moontown Road is closed at Ind. 38 through late May. Hamilton Southeastern softball pitcher continues dominance

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Hamilton Southeastern High School junior Grace Swedarsky is one of the most dominant softball pitchers in the state.

But she understands there are more aspects to the game besides wins and losses.

“For the rest of the season, the goals I have for myself are to stay connected with everyone on the team and also just have fun and a good time,” she said. “My goals for the team would be that we play together and for each other and have a good time together because it is just a game and we should be having fun.”

Swedarsky helped lead the Royals to last year’s Class 4A IHSAA state title with an 18-2 record, a 1.05 earned run average and 270 strikeouts in 140 innings. She had 13 strikeouts in a 2-1 victory over New Palestine in the 4A title game. She was named MaxPreps Indiana Softball Player of the Year. As a freshman, she was 12-5 with a 1.35 ERA. So far this season for the Royals (9-5), the right-hander is 7-2 with a 0.88 ERA and

and technique so that she can step on the mound feeling calm and ready,” Pusti said.

“Her leadership is greatly, and positively, improving. She is finding a confident voice when addressing the team and enjoys being able to motivate her teammates.”

Swedarsky said she has made the most strides with her athleticism.

“Being a pitcher, you don’t have that much fielding, but I have been putting in a lot of time working on it to prepare for anything coming my way,” she said.

Swedarsky said the Royals might have more versatility this season.

“This year, I feel like we have a lot more athletes that can play multiple positions, so that allows for us to be more flexible,” she said. “Although not bad, last year (we) had more athletes that specialized in a specific position.”

The highly-recruited Swedarsky, who plays for coach Jeff Bennett’s Indiana Magic Gold team during the travel softball season, committed to Virginia Tech University in the fall of 2024.

“I feel like it had the best balance of softball and academics, because I want to major in aerospace engineering,” she said.

“Virginia Tech is also a home run-hitting team, and (having) that extra run support as a pitcher is important.”

HAMILTON COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION HONOR JOHN BUNDY

Hamilton County Parks and Recreation hosted a dedication ceremony at the White River Campground April 22 to honor the late John Bundy, who founded White River Rescue Inc. in 2000 after a pollution event devastated the river’s aquatic life. Community members, local officials and environmental advocates attended the ceremony to honor Bundy on what would have been his 76th birthday. During the ceremony, a commemorative plaque was unveiled at the campground, recognizing Bundy’s advocacy, restoration work and dedication to protecting the river’s ecosystem.

FOCUS ON WELL-BEING Riverview Health doctors work to grow, expand medical care services

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com Doctors at Riverview Health, an independent community-based health system, are focused on the future of overall health in Hamilton County.

Riverview President/CEO Dave Hyatt spoke at the Noblesville Chamber of Commerce’s State of Health luncheon April 23 at Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville to discuss how Riverview continues to expand its services as the county’s population grows.

Hyatt said Riverview Health’s mission focuses on the three values: compassion, belonging and excellence. He said Riverview Health has 1,750 team members — nearly 400 more than it had four years ago. Five hundred medical staff members represent 35 specialties, two hospitals, five emergency departments and 26 locations.

“As we grow as an organization, we have recently codified our values on what’s important to us as we go forward,” Hyatt said. “If we don’t protect our culture, we’re at risk of losing it.”

The World Health Organization estimates that 80 percent of health outcomes are driven by social determinants of health rather than access to care, according to Hyatt.

“That’s where we come in,” Hyatt said.

“Hamilton County leads the U.S. in social determinants of health, and that’s a lot of credit to many different partners that have worked countless hours, days and years to make Hamilton County so special. We still have a lot of work to do. It takes everybody in the community working together to drive those health outcomes.”

Hyatt said the challenge for staff at Riverview Health is maintaining access to care for residents as the county grows.

He said Hamilton County needs 34.5 more primary care providers to meet community demand.

“In Noblesville, the estimated population by 2045 (is) 140,000,” Hyatt said. “When people talk about competition in health care, I’m not too worried about it because the volume is coming, and it’s going to take all of us working together to take care of these folks. We consider primary care (as) the quarterback of our patient’s

journey in health care to help them figure out what specialists they need to go to.”

Dr. Timothy Imler, a gastroenterologist, said he launched a speciality GI program at Riverview Health in September 2023.

“If anybody has ever tried to see a gastroenterologist for any reason, it’s usually a four- to six-month wait to get into any kind of subspecialty appointment,” Imler said. “We’ve been able to cut this down to get people in within two weeks just by opening up access to service and having a small system that can navigate these (services) better.”

Imler said the GI practice is at Riverview

Dr. John Martin, a general surgeon, explains how technology is expanding services at Riverview Health.

Health’s Westfield facility on the fifth floor, and the sixth floor is being renovated to be a full-service endoscopy center.

“We are still in expansion mode,” Imler said. “Gastroenterologists are a huge need, and with the (predicted) growth in Hamilton County, we’re going to get a huge deficit.”

Dr. John Martin, a general surgeon, is working to expand digestive health care at Riverview with the help of robot-assisted surgery.

“As the population is getting bigger, all of the health problems that come with having more people around are also coming as

well,” Martin said. “We operate on a lot of things, (like) gallbladders (and) appendixes, and a lot of times it is silent, surgical issues that affect people’s ability to do their jobs, to go about their life and to eat the foods they want to eat. We have the ability to treat these things, and we do it with technology.”

Martin uses a DaVinci Robot at Riverview. The DaVinci device is a surgical system used for minimally invasive surgery that allows surgeons to perform procedures with precision.

“I can (move) around inside without having to have a big, traditional surgery where I cut from stem to stern,” Martin said. “I sit at (a) console on the side, and then the robot articulates my movements inside the patient. People recover so much faster from the operations that we are doing.

We can do these surgeries, and people are going home the same day or the next day.”

With more advanced technology, Martin said area residents now have more surgical options close to home.

THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE At the State of Health luncheon April 23, Riverview gastroenterologist Dr. Tim Imler said colon cancer is the thirdmost common cancer in the U.S. and the fourth deadliest for men.

Westfield resident Jason Hemmerling, who teaches construction at Westfield High School, was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in March 2023 at Riverview Health. He finished chemotherapy in September 2023 and has been cancer-free since.

Hemmerling said Riverview Health remains competitive with other heath care centers he has visited in the Indianapolis area.

“Westfield School District has a partnership with Riverview, so I went there to get checked out,” Hemmerling said.

“They did some investigation and an X-ray, and they found I had a tumor in my colon that was blocking anything from passing through. That same day, I went into emergency surgery to have that tumor removed.”

Hemmerling said going to Riverview was the “best decision” of his life.

“Every person I encountered through the Riverview network was absolutely unbelievable,” Hemmerling said. “From security guards up to the highest level of the pyramid, I did not encounter one

grumpy person. “Everybody was truly helpful and interested in taking care of me and not just getting me through the process.”

Hemmerling said the quality of care and proximity in the community makes Riverview different from other area hospitals.

“Everything I needed was right there,” Hemmerling said. “I can run over to a place less than a mile from work and get CT scans done. I’ve had everything I needed right at hand. I didn’t have to go to Texas or Indianapolis. Everything was right there.”

Compiled by Zach Ross The new 1933 Lounge in Carmel features an interior design that blends sophistication with a welcoming atmosphere, according to Craig Huse, CEO and co-owner of parent company Huse Culinary. In a recent Q&A, Huse detailed the vision behind the space, the intentional layout and key design elements that aim to create a distinct yet inviting experience for patrons.

What was the overarching vision or design concept for the interior of the 1933 Lounge?

Our vision for the 1933 Lounge in Carmel was to blend timeless sophistication with the welcoming warmth of a neighborhood retreat. We wanted to create an environment that felt both elevated and approachable – a place where guests could relax with a handcrafted cocktail or enjoy a full dining experience in a setting rich in character and detail.

Shea Design out of Minneapolis helped bring that vision to life through classic materials, thoughtful finishes and a layout that invites guests to settle in and stay awhile.

While you have two other locations with this restaurant concept, the Carmel location feels distinct. What feeling did you aim to evoke in customers through the interior design?

With Carmel, we wanted to lean into the building’s high ceilings and comfort with polish.

As guests walk in, they’re met with natural light, layered textures and an immediate sense of intimacy. It’s refined but not intimidating – familiar but special. Each 1933 Lounge has its own personality, and in Carmel, the design evokes a sense of calm sophistication that fits both the community and the space itself.

Could you describe the layout and flow of the space? The different areas within the restaurant feel cohesive yet retain their character?

The layout was very intentional. We created distinct zones – the bar, a multiuse private event/ dining area, patio, and dining and cocktail lounge SEE 1933 LOUNGE ON PAGE 21

areas — each with its own vibe using various design elements and materials.

We focused heavily on sightlines to the bar and spacing to ensure guests could move comfortably through the space without disrupting the experience of others. The bar located deep into the space allows for both energy and intimacy, allowing guests to enjoy a quiet dinner, cocktails and conversations with friends or a lively evening out.

What were your key priorities when selecting the furniture, including tables, chairs and booths?

We wanted comfort without compromising on style. Every piece was selected to support relaxed visits – high-quality materials, plush upholstery and solid craftsmanship.

Booths were designed for a cozy, enveloping feel, while chairs and barstools offer structure and support without being overly formal.

Durability was also key, given the number of guests we anticipate, but we didn’t want anything to feel utilitarian. Everything had to contribute to the mood of the restaurant and lounge.

What role does lighting play in establishing the overall ambiance?

Lighting is one of the most powerful design tools influencing mood, and we approached it very intentionally.

During the day, the natural light floods the space, highlighting the textures and details of the design.

In the evening, layered lighting – pendants, sconces, accent lights – creates a warm, flattering glow that enhances the richness of the materials and makes the space feel intimate and inviting. It’s about setting a tone that reflects our restaurant mood intent and evolves with the time of day while remaining consistently welcoming.

He said his wife questioned his sanity at the time, but the experiment has worked out well, with the Fishers restaurant maintaining its quality and popularity over the decades.

Peterson, who owns Crown Technology just across 96th Street from the restaurant, used to travel regularly for work, so he often ate in restaurants. (Photo by Leila “My contention was to give people what they are looking for — good food, Kheiry good service, good ambiance,” he said. “And treat them the way you want to be treated. Many times, I’d take customers out to be entertained and it was like (the restaurant was) doing me a big favor. People are spending $70, $80, $90 check average — you’ve got to have something half decent for them and make them feel like they got their money’s worth.”

Peterson said he recruited an experienced chef as a partner, and they hired a good sous chef and manager to help get the new venture off the ground.

Peterson’s steakhouse opened in 1999 at 7690 E. 96th St. in Fishers, the site of a former Frisch’s Big Boy. “We had our ups and downs, but never have we fallen on bad times, except COVID,” he said. “Everybody went through that. We won a lot of awards — the Wine Spectator awards — and people come here for wine dinners and really appreciate it.”

He said the secret to success is caring about customers, and if the restaurant gets something wrong, to make it right immediately.

“But we don’t have that many complaints. We get a lot of compliments and are kind of spoiled a little bit, but we would never take it for granted,” he said. “I always keep trying harder and harder.”

Peterson said he’s more interested in maintaining a good reputation than making money and has never been tempted to expand beyond the single restaurant bearing his name.

Peterson’s daughter, Carrie Benko, who oversees day-to-day operations at the restaurant along with her job as president of Crown Technology, noted that the restaurant’s staff is a big part of its success. They are well trained, and many have been there for a long time, providing quality, consistent service to customers.

Peterson’s is open for dinner six nights a week and, although certain favorites are always on the menu, the offerings change every spring and fall. Executive Chef David Foegley, who previously was an executive and corporate chef with Huse Culinary — owners of St. Elmo, Harry and Izzy’s and 1933 Lounge — has worked at Peterson’s for about nine years.

He makes a lot of steaks, of course, but Foegley said he also enjoys “tinkering” with the menu and focusing on Midwest regional ingredients.

“Duck in Indiana is one of the biggest things that is produced,” he said. “So, I’m doing a duck pot sticker with a ginger broth (and) I’m doing a grilled pork chops with a guava barbecue.”

Those items and more, including chicken and cornmeal waffles with hickory syrup and a “fire and ice” seafood tower, are featured on the new spring menu.

Wild Eggs features new adult beverages

By Mark Ambrogi The Wild Eggs restaurant in Carmel can now serve its specialty alcoholic drinks in addition to beer and wine.

Wild Eggs opened at 1438 Main St. with a two-way license in 2016 serving beer and wine.

Michelle Heffernan, vice president of marketing for Wild Eggs, said a couple of months ago the restaurant had the opportunity to acquire a three-way license for beer, wine and liquor.

“We have been hoping for the three-way liquor license for a long time,” Heffernan said.

Drinks include several different mimosas with sparkling wine and orange juice. Flavors include pomegranate, strawberry lemonade, orange pineapple and peach.

Wild Eggs also offers Wild Screwdrivers, a Bloody Wild Eggs in Carmel now offers Bloody Mary drinks.

Wild Eggs in Carmel is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Wild Eggs has seven restaurants in Indiana, including Carmel, Fishers, downtown Indianapolis, Avon and Greenwood.

Nationally, Wild Eggs has 17 restaurants, including 15 corporate owned.

There is one franchisee with two locations in Lexington, Ky., that is working on opening a third location in July.

Hamilton County businesses join viral chocolate craze

By Jessica Todd The Dubai chocolate craze has arrived in Hamilton County.

Dubai chocolate, a chocolate bar typically consisting of chocolate, knafeh and pistachios, was first created by Fix Dessert Chocolatier in Dubai in 2021. It was popularized over the last year after videos promoting the treat went viral on social media platforms such as TikTok. Several Hamilton County businesses, such as Yafa Golden Coffee in Noblesville, Melt n Dip in Fishers and Noga International Market in Westfield began selling versions of Dubai chocolate within the last year.

“It all started with the bars,” Assistant Manager Abdullah Ali said. “Dubai chocolate bars started going crazy in the Middle East, and through TikTok, it reached America.”

Ali said the business opened in the summer of 2024, and Dubai chocolate helped draw customers.

“The demand wasn’t super high at first, but once we started pushing it out through our social media pages, it was like boom,” Ali said. “In our treats, we use premium pistachio cream, fresh strawberries, Belgian chocolate and knafeh — shredded dough.”

Noga International Market at 3026 Ind. 32, a grocery store offering baked goods, coffee and international foods, also sells Dubai chocolate.

The store’s owner, who simply goes by the name Bebo, said posting about it on social media also drew crowds to the small market.

“Social media was not an environment we knew about, but once we saw Dubai chocolate getting popular, we started selling small and large Dubai chocolate bars and posting on Facebook about it,” Bebo said.

Melt n Dip at 9840 E. 116th St. also has had several videos go viral on social media for its Dubai chocolate strawberry cups — a combination of strawberries, Belgian chocolate, creamy pistachio butter and crunchy knafeh. No one from the restaurant responded to requests for comment.

Noblesville resident Lauren Royalty plans to open her boutique, Hearts & Hems, at 98 S. 9th St. off the downtown RETAIL square in Noblesville June 7.

Royalty, who teaches second grade in Beech Grove, started the women’s clothing boutique in her Noblesville home in 2001.

“I started out selling clothes in my living room,” Royalty said. “From there, I moved to a mobile boutique and did the Noblesville Farmers Market. I had a small storefront in Fishers once, and then I scaled back by running it online while teaching.”

The boutique will offer modern, trending women’s clothing and accessories. The store also will have a charm bar where customers can create jewelry.

“I’m really trying to focus on affordable clothing,” Royalty said. “I’m excited about the charm bar because I love jewelry. I will have a spot where people can sit and create their jewelry. It’s not going to be a spot where people just shop, but a place where they can hang out with their friends or family and make jewelry.”

Royalty also wants the store to have a positive impact on the community.

MUSIC Feinstein will perform “Celebrate the Songbook” with the ICO at 8 p.m. May 10 at the Payne and Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“They are world class in their musical ability, so I’m certainly looking forward to making music with them,” Feinstein said.

“I do enjoy collaborating with Indy-area groups because there is so much talent and it’s always educational for me to collaborate because I learn in the process.

That’s one of the reasons I love the Songbook Academy because I learn so much from the students and it’s always, for me, about learning.

“The concert is one that I’m particularly excited about doing because this is the first time I will have really been able to mine the wonderful treasure trove of music in the Songbook archives and bring it to life locally. So, it’s going to be quite an exciting evening and there will be a lot of stories and anecdotes that put the songs in context, which I think will make it fun for everyone, even the people that might not know the classic music. And to hear the swing arrangements and the beautiful string writing is life changing. So many people listen to music in a canned form, they mainly listen on devices, and to hear the acoustic sound is pretty extraordinary.”

Feinstein said some of the featured songwriters include Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, Harry Warren, Irving Berlin and George Gershwin. “(They are) all in beautiful symphonic arrangements, some of which are held in the Songbook archives,” Feinstein said.

I’ve performed it in so many cities, and the last Tony Bennett tribute shows will be (this month), and then I’ll move on to another project,” he said. “I think I’ve done this show about 75 times, and the interesting thing for me is that it never gets old. I think the enthusiasm of the audience for him and his songs makes it fresh for me.”

Since Feinstein’s last concert at the Center in April 2024, the venue has added a naming rights agreement for the Center and Palladium.

“As the Center’s artistic director, I am absolutely encouraged by the recent support in the naming rights for both the Center and the Palladium,” Feinstein said. “To have such support is perhaps rarer these days because the amount of philanthropy or philanthropic experience has changed with so many changes in our world. And yet we have such stalwart supporters and visionaries who understand how important the arts are and how they change lives with music, dance and all the other disciplines, and that is something that has always inspired me about being the artistic director at the Center, that there are so many people that are clear about what the arts bring to our lives. So, after all these years, being connected to the Center and the City of Carmel is still a tremendous blessing.”

Multi-Arts day set for May 18

Hancock, executive artistic director of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre, goes by Gregory Glade as an artist. Then Mangos met artist Scott Osborne, whose studio is around the corner from Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre.

“Here, we have a nice neighborhood, so I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to have a multi-arts day?’” Mangos said. “It’s a fun day of serious art.”

“Multi-Arts in the Neighborhood” is set for noon to 3 p.m. May 18 at Osborne’s Brown Hound Studios, 435 Gradle Dr. From 3 to 4 p.m., the Mélange Series is returning to GHDT, 329 Gradle Dr., with three new artists, a dancer (Audrey Springer), visual artist (Gabby Mojica) and vocalist (Ashley Nicole Soprano). Together, they collaborate to create art at The Florence, GHDT’s black box theater.
