Judge rules $500K settlement with Carmel employee should be public

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Five years after paying a city employee $500,000 to avoid a lawsuit, a Hamilton County judge ordered the City of Carmel to release the settlement agreement publicly.

Since 2021, City of Carmel officials had argued that because the settlement was part of a personnel file, it was among types of public records exempt from being released. But last month, Superior Court Judge Darren Murphy ruled that he did not agree.

“The public has a paramount interest in understanding allegations against its government and the resulting liability arising from official acts or omissions,” Murphy wrote in his ruling. “This interest is especially compelling where public funds, whether expended directly or indirectly, are used to resolve claims stemming from those acts or omissions.”

The ruling stemmed from a 2020 harassment complaint filed by a female city employee against then-City of Carmel Corporation Counsel Doug Haney. By the Haney end of the year, Haney had resigned and the Carmel City Council had launched an investigation into the city’s handling of the matter.

In August 2021, the council took a vote on whether to subpoena then-Mayor Jim Brainard to produce the settlement, but a 4-4 tie meant the measure did not pass. Mayor Sue Finkam, who was then a city councilor, voted in favor of the subpoena.

At the time, several councilors argued that access to the settlement would allow them to fully investigate the matter to better protect all employees from similar situations. Those who opposed the subpoena said they wanted

to protect the privacy of the employee who made the complaint and felt the issue had already been resolved.

Around that same time, Current in Carmel and the Indianapolis Star filed public information requests for the settlement, which were denied. Both newspapers filed complaints against the city with then-Public Access Counselor Luke Britt, who issued a nonbinding opinion stating the city should release the amount of the settlement.

After the city still refused to do so, the Indianapolis Star sued the City of Carmel in August 2022. Nearly four years later, Murphy issued his ruling and ordered the city to pay the newspaper’s legal fees.

“Transparency in government actions and liability is essential for ensuring citizens are properly informed and represented,” the ruling stated.

“Such disclosure not only promotes accountability but also reinforces the community’s trust in its government to act responsibly on their behalf.”

The City of Carmel provided a copy of the settlement agreement to Current May 11 shortly after Current filed another public information request for the information. In the settlement, the city and Haney “deny any wrongdoing whatsoever.”

In addition to paying the employee $500,000, which was covered through an insurance policy, the settlement required Haney to stay 100 feet away from the employee. It also required the city to transfer her to a different role where she would make no less than $125,000 annually.

to do so.”

When asked for comment about the ruling, a City of Carmel spokesperson sent Current a statement.

“The City of Carmel had an obligation to vigorously defend the agreement entered into by the previous administration,” the statement reads. “With a court now ordering release of the information, we are moving past this chapter and will continue to foster a supportive workplace alongside our ongoing commitment to fiscal responsibility and transparent government.”

In an April 23 social media post responding to an Indianapolis Star story about the ruling, Finkam stated that her predecessor’s administration “did not properly handle an employee complaint.”

“A settlement agreement reached before I took office was not publicly released, and included a confidentiality provision that kept Carmel residents in the dark for far too long,” Finkam stated. “It also obligated the city to continue litigating against disclosure. From day one, I have fought for transparency so taxpayers can see how decisions are made and how their dollars are spent, and that commitment has not changed.

I have consistently pushed for as much openness as legally possible on this matter.”

Brainard declined to comment on the ruling.

Italian restaurant, condos coming to Monon Square

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Eleven single-story luxury condos and a new restaurant concept by Tony Lazzara are planned within the buildings starting to take shape at Carmel’s $100 million Monon Square North development.

Members of the project team, which includes Stirsman Property Group, J.C. Hart Company and the Carmel Redevelopment Commission, presented an update on its progress during a May 7 gathering at Circle Real Estate.

The two- and three-bedroom condos, which start at $1.8 million, will be in a five-story building along Veterans Way just west of Range Line Road. Called Eleven, the building will include covered parking, 10-foot tall ceilings, private storage rooms, custom cabinetry and other amenities. The building will have a club room and fitness center.

“These are going to be hands down the best condo units in the entire state,” said Jason O’Neil, an advisor with Circle Real Estate.

Residents are expected to begin moving into Eleven in the first quarter of 2027, according to Gary McNutt, partner at Wedgewood Building Company, which is designing the interior.

The first restaurant tenant to be announced at Monon Square North is Tre Ragazzi, an upscale restaurant by Lazzara, who owns Anthony’s Chophouse on Main Street. Tre Ragazzi is Italian for “three boys,” according to Lazzara, who has three sons.

“It’s going to be an elevated seafood

Italian restaurant with housemade pastas (and) a lively bar atmosphere,” Lazzara said. “We’ll even have a pasta window area where you can see our chefs making the pasta daily.”

Tre Ragazzi is set to be open for lunch and dinner six days a week.

David Stirsman, owner of Stirsman Property Group, said developers are also in discussions with two other restaurants that are considering locations at Monon Square North.

“They’re both new concepts to Indiana,” Stirsman said. “They’re both multiple-store operators, but they’re not a chain. One trends toward fast casual, and one fits nicely between (Tre Ragazzi) and the fast casual restaurant.”

Monon Square North is also set to include office space, 371 apartments and two garages with a total of 469 parking spaces.

Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam said the development will help fill a need for additional office space and for-sale residential space in the city’s central core.

She said she frequently receives calls from businesses looking to relocate to the area.

“Do you know how much it physically pains me to say we have nothing (available)?” she said. “This is a very, very, very sought after space. We used to be competing against Electric Works in Fort Wayne and Mass Ave in Indy. We’re not competing against them anymore.

Carmel senior wins youth service award

Shen co-founded Infinity Squared Mathematics, a nonprofit that provides resources and mentorship to underserved students across the world. She is also an adjunct research assoShen ciate with the Indiana University Department of Biostatistics.

At CHS, Shen is the president of the chemistry and math clubs and is a student representative for Riley Hospital for Children’s Dance Marathon.

“Those who work with Allison see her as a trusted voice who consistently demonstrates integrity and good judgment,” Hamilton County Commissioner Christine Altman said at the ceremony. “Whether she is tutoring a peer in advanced calculus or managing global chapter offices, she shows up in her clearest and most focused self.”

The ceremony was presented by the Hamilton County Commissioners and the Hamilton County Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs as part of its ongoing effort to recognize outstanding service by youth in the community. A selection committee of employees determined the winner.

“I’m always inspired by the way these students step up and lead with integrity,” said Monica Greer, executive director of HCCOAOD. “Their commitment to serving others and making healthy choices is shaping a stronger, more positive future for Hamilton County.”

Other nominees were Molly Sivertsen of Noblesville High School, Josslyn Lee of Fishers High School, Melanee Forrester of Hamilton Heights High School, Mason McDonald of Hamilton Southeastern High School, Norah Stites of Sheridan High School and Katelyn Bolduc of Westfield High School. Firefighters battle blaze in parks storage building

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Carmel firefighters battled a blaze in a Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation storage and maintenance building that began shortly before 6 p.m. May 13.

First responders saw “a significant fire column” as they neared the scene in the 1400 block of E. 116th Street, according to Carmel Fire Department spokesperson Tim Griffin.

Firefighters accessed the building through the adjacent CCPR administration building drive. They discovered “heavy fire” in a corner of the building, Griffin stated.

Shortly after firefighters entered the building, a partial collapse occurred toward the back of the structure.

“Due to the collapse conditions and deteriorating structural integrity, command made the decision to withdraw crews from the building and transition operations to a defensive strategy,” Griffin stated.

No one was inside the building when the blaze began, and no firefighters were injured during the response. Griffin said firefighters do not yet know how the fire started.

The maintenance building contained mowers and a variety of chemicals and other maintenance equipment. Hamilton County Emergency Management will assist in monitoring and cleaning chemical runoff if necessary.

Park fun run series returns

Featured trails will be marked with a banner and have signage directing participants along the course.

“There are parks that are well-known and popular, and some that might be a little bit off the beaten path for some of our visitors,” said Kari Berger, CCPR resource development coordinator. “It’s a fun opportunity to explore our parks, get some fresh air and spend time with people that you love.”

Judicial center expansion begins

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County officials broke ground May 11 on the expansion of the Hamilton County Government and Judicial Center in downtown Noblesville.

The $70 million project will add more than 100,000 square feet, including seven new courtrooms, upgraded security and expanded public space. The three-story addition also will consolidate multiple county offices and provide room for future growth.

The first floor will house county offices, while the second floor will serve as the new home for the additional courtrooms. The third floor will remain unfinished for later buildout as caseloads continue to rise.

“The expansion is to provide the judges the tools they need to efficiently decide cases both criminal and civil,” Christine Altman, president of the Hamilton County Commissioners said.

“As an attorney, I’m well aware that festering disputes and the inability either to prove guilt or to prove that you’re not guilty weighs heavily on the soul. It is our responsibility to make sure that people are able to air their disputes and resolve their differences as quickly as possible.”

Built in 1992, the judicial center has been remodeled several times to ac-

commodate new staff and departments.

County officials say post-COVID-19 pandemic case filings have pushed the courts beyond capacity.

“We currently have seven superior courts, one circuit court, seven fulltime magistrates and one part-time magistrate,” Altman said. “In January, we’ll be adding two more judges. We’re clearly out of space, and we have been for the past 10 years.”

Hamilton County Superior Court Judge David Najjar said the project reflects not only the county’s growth, but its commitment to justice, service and innovation.

He said the growth brings the responsibility of ensuring the courts remain accessible, efficient and equipped to meet the needs of everyone seeking resolution, protection or guidance.

“Courtrooms are more than just rooms in an office building,” Najjar said. “They are spaces where the Constitution is upheld, rights are protected, disputes are resolved, families find paths forward and the rule of law is made real in people’s lives. This new facility will allow us to continue that work more effectively with the dignity and accessibility the public deserves and demands.”

Construction is expected to be complete in 2028.

Lacrosse player charged with battery after CHS game A lacrosse player from Michigan has been charged with felony battery after allegedly punching a Carmel High School student in the face after a May 2 game in Carmel.

Luke Fisher, 18, punched a juvenile member of the CHS lacrosse team as he was celebrating with teammates, according to a probable cause affidavit.

“The juvenile victim advised that the punch was delivered with so much force that it caused his head to snap back and forth in a whiplash like motion,” the affidavit states, adding that the student began feeling ill and had to “immediately sit down.”

The victim’s parents took him to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed he sustained a concussion. The student said it “hurt to think” and that he had a headache and felt foggy, the affidavit states.

Fisher, a Birmingham resident, is a member of the Detroit Country Day School varsity lacrosse team, according to the school’s website. The school did not provide a statement before press time.

A Carmel Clay Schools spokesperson told Current the district is aware of the incident but is not involved in the legal proceedings.

Facing teams from around the globe, the TechHOUNDS advanced to the final match, competing in front of more than 50,000 attendees at one of the largest STEM events in the world.

“This is an incredible accomplishment,” Coach Larry Griggs said. “Our students competed with the best in the world and proved they belong there.

I’m most proud of their grit, teamwork, and the way they represented Carmel.”

When Rich came across a small blurb in Carmel Topics back in 1993 inviting the public to attend a meeting about a new theatre group in Carmel, he decided to attend. He had no idea how meaningful that decision would become — not just for him, but for our family and the entire community.

That new theatre group would become Carmel Community Players, and over the years it has grown into something truly special. Since those early days, CCP has performed more than 1,000 times, staging more than 150 full-length shows, including dozens of youth productions, along with many cabarets, talent shows and fundraisers.

In those early years, CCP quickly became a vital part of Carmel, performing several shows each year in nearly a dozen venues and participating in events such as the Carmel Farmers Market, the Christmas Living Nativity at St. Vincent’s and CarmelFest.

As Carmel’s oldest community theatre, CCP remains the only all-volunteer theatre in the city to produce a full season each year.

More than 1,000 volunteers have devoted nearly 200,000 hours to entertain more than 70,000 patrons. With no paid staff and a strong spirit of volunteerism, CCP has kept ticket prices affordable —

currently around $20 — ensuring quality live theatre remains accessible to all.

Early CCP productions were staged mainly at schools and churches, as well as outdoors at the Carmel Civic Gazebo.

From 1994 through 2008, most shows were held at the former Carmel Performing Arts Center or at the intimate Studio 15.

From 2009 through 2019, CCP called the Carmel Community Playhouse in Clay Terrace home.

Since 2019, CCP has performed primarily at The Cat Theatre. While it has been a welcome venue, the Players continue to search for a more permanent home of their own.

OBITUARY Daniel Francis Fels, 67, of Holmes Beach, Florida, passed away on April 26, 2026, in Bradenton, Florida, after a brief illness. He was born on July 15, 1958, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Dan graduated from Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana, in 1977.

He spent many years working in the hospitality industry in Indiana and South Florida before later building a career as an independent contractor in the communications technology field.

Dan was an adventurous man of wide-ranging interests and deep commitments. He was a passionate sailor, a skill he learned from his father, and he found lasting community and purpose on the water. His love of sailing led him to join the Tampa Sailing Squadron in Apollo Beach, Florida, where he served the club in numerous leadership roles, including two terms as Commodore, and terms as Vice-Commodore, Rear Commodore, and Director. In recognition of his dedication and service, he received multiple awards and was recently honored with a unanimous vote for Life Membership.

In addition to sailing, Dan enjoyed golf and bowling, and he valued time spent with family and friends above all else.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, William F. Fels III and Mary V. (Duffy) Fels.

He is survived by his loving wife, Wendy (Perelman) Fels; his children, Shan Menozzi, Ryan Owens, and Sarah (Owens) Emmanuel; his grandchildren; and his siblings, William F. Fels IV, Deirdre (Fels) McDaniel and her husband Curt McDaniel, and Michael Fels and his partner April Deshong.

Guerin Catholic pitcher develops into strikeout king

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Guerin Catholic High School senior pitcher Tate Troxell has become an imposing figure on the mound.

“Tate has continued to get stronger, and he works very hard to keep his body in great shape,” Golden Eagles baseball coach David Schrage said. “He has consistently been our No. 1 pitcher and averages close to two strikeouts per inning. His out pitch is his slider, and his fastball is in the 90s-plus (mph).”

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Troxell has a 4-0 record with a 1.31 earned run average and 48 strikeouts in 26.2 innings for IHSAA Class 3A No. 2 Guerin Catholic.

He had an 8-2 record with a 1.00 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 56 innings in 2025.

He is ranked the No. 3 right-hander and sixth overall college recruit in Indiana

by Perfect Game USA. “I stayed consistently hitting 90 mph (my) junior year (and) was up to 94 in the summer of 2025,” said Troxell, who wants to add 10 more pounds by next season.

He started playing baseball when he

“I really learned what worked well for me, not only pitching but how crucial the weight room was and getting my body in shape and mobile,” he said.

Guerin Catholic lost to Jasper in last year’s Class 3A semistate championship game.

“It was our first time getting exposed as a team to high stakes baseball, win or go home,” he said. “We made a good run but fell short of our goal. It has only made our team more hungry for a state title, as we know we are capable of making it there with the right mindsets.”

Troxell, who committed to the University of Alabama before his freshman season, said he had multiple scholarship offers. His other two top college choices when he committed were University of Mississippi and Texas A&M University.

“I fell in love with the campus of Alabama and pretty much knew right away this is where I wanted to go,” said Troxell, who will report to Alabama in early July. “I felt very welcomed by not only the coaching staff but the community in Tuscaloosa. It has such an electric culture feel, where all sports are notorious for winning. My (goals) before getting there are to win a state championship with Guerin Catholic and finish off my high school career on a high note. I also want to get myself in the best position and shape upon my arrival at Alabama.”

Drivers feeling at home in Carmel as they prepare for Indy 500

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Christian Lundgaard got some needed momentum heading into his fifth Indy 500.

The Carmel resident got his second IndyCar victory and first since 2023 by winning the Sonsio Grand Prix in an Arrow McLaren Chevrolet May 9 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

“It feels awesome,” he said. “I hope that it doesn’t take another three years for another one.”

Lundgaard made his debut in the Grand Prix at IMS, finishing second in 2021 in his first IndyCar race. He earned IndyCar Rookie of the Year in 2022, his first full season.

“I never looked back since joining IndyCar,” he said. “It’s the place I want to be, the place I want to compete.”

Lundgaard, who is fourth in the series points, said it’s helpful to live near the Arrow McLaren Racing headquarters in Indianapolis.

“I live here full time,” said the 24-year-old Danish driver, who joined Arrow McLaren in 2025. “I go home for Christmas and I’ll spend two weeks home in July. My life is built around here, not just from the race team, but my girlfriend is from here. Obviously, my family doesn’t come here often, so I spend a lot of time with her parents and the rest of the family. It’s awesome to go to the shop every day and say hello to everybody, pick some brains and improve and have the crucial conversations. We find bits and pieces to fine tune and develop. It comes down to my everyday life is now here.”

Lundgaard used to train on the Monon Greenway but got concerned after IndyCar driver David Malukas injured his wrist in a mountain bike accident in California.

“I try to take precautions. But at the end of the day, you can get injured at any time, you can go out on the race track and get hurt,” he said. “I have a gym at home, which makes life a lot easier. I play a lot of golf around here,

which is tough in the winter.”

Lundgaard is a member of The Bridgewater Club in Westfield.

“There’s a lot of positives (heading into the 500),” he said. “I’ve finished all four 500s. I have nothing to lose and more to gain is my mindset. It is just maximizing the whole month. I find it hard to think we’ll have the same conditions as last year. I think it should be a little warmer, which should make racing a little more interesting. Our cars are pretty good in heat.”

Lundgaard’s best 500 finish was seventh last year. His previous best 500 finish was 13th in 2024.

“All the cars I drove at Rahal Letterman were fighting to make the race, and I’m in a very different situation now with Arrow McLaren,” he said.

“We had to undo some of the bad things I picked up on in the Rahal car. We knocked most of that off last year, and we started in testing this year better than we left off last year.”‘A

Peng Sun is only 30 but has already been a hair stylist for 16 years.

“In China, we don’t have to go to high school after middle school, so I was 14 and went to (work at a) hair salon at entry level,” he said.

Now Sun, who goes by Jack, has accomplished a goal of opening his own salon. Hair Sense debuted April 30 at 1685 E. 116th St. at the Muse at the Corner in Carmel.

“I love this location,” he said. “It’s really in the middle of Carmel. We’re next to Ben & Jerry’s. There are apartments upstairs. I didn’t realize how many people walk around in this area. There’s a parking garage, so it’s really easy for clients.”

Sun, who lives in Noblesville, said the salon draws clients from other nearby areas as well.

“In the back of my mind, I wanted to go out on my own,” he said. “That’s the dream for every stylist. The name comes from style with sense.”

“We keep building the team,” he said.

Drug court celebrates four new grads news@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County’s Drug Treatment Court recently recognized four graduates during a ceremony in the Historic Courthouse courtroom.

The program provides a treatment-based alternative for nonviolent offenders working to overcome substance-use disorder.

Among the graduates was Kimber Osborne, who has been sober since Aug. 27, 2024. Osborne began using opiates as a teenager and spent years navigating addiction and multiple treatment attempts. After relapsing during the COVID-19 pandemic and facing three arrests in three months, she entered the program ready for change.

“I was scared in the beginning — it was so hard,” Osborne stated. “But I needed the structure and accountability. This program, along with my sponsor and support system, helped me surrender and truly commit to recovery.”

Osborne is now working, pursuing an MBA in business at Indiana Wesleyan University and plans to continue participating in recovery groups.

Jason Landers also graduated after achieving sobriety in August 2024 following his arrest two months prior.

Landers described his life before entering the program as chaotic and isolating, marked by substance use that led to legal trouble and instability.

“When I was arrested, I actually felt relieved,” Landers stated. “I had no hope and no way out. This program gave me a chance when I didn’t think I’d get one.”

structure, committing to therapy, meetings and personal growth. Early morning meetings helped him connect with others in recovery and today, he continues to stay involved in the recovery community, serving as a sponsor.

“You have to be willing to change your whole mindset,” Landers stated.

“This isn’t just about getting out of legal trouble — it’s about changing your life.”

Participants in Drug Treatment Court commit to intensive supervision, substance use treatment, random drug testing, home visits and education or employment requirements. The program typically takes 18 to 24 months to complete and is designed to support long-term recovery.

“The graduates’ success reflects their commitment to change and the effectiveness of the program,” stated Superior Court Judge David Najjar, who oversees the program. “This program truly helps individuals rebuild their lives.”

Santana set for high-energy tour with Doobie Brothers

His Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band, Santana, has been refining its Afro Latin blues rock sound for nearly 60 years.

“It’s been a long life filled with blessings, miracles and a lot of incredible and positive opportunities,” the legendary guitarist said.

Santana will join the Doobie Brothers on the “Oneness” tour, which includes a 7 p.m. June 21 concert at Noblesville’s Ruoff Music Center.

Santana said the band has a strong chemistry with the Doobie Brothers.

“It’s alchemy with both bands with the resonant vibration, frequency and sound that both bands bring, especially when we jam together,” he said.

“We both bring the audience unity, harmony, oneness and a high-inspirational energy. We give people a deep sense of self-worth. People get up and dance, cry, laugh, and they go home and they make love because we ignite all the energy in the show. So, we tested it before (with the Doobie Brothers in 2019), and it works. We were trying it again at a different level, and this time it’s with Mr. Michael McDonald, because last time he wasn’t there but now he is.”

After a nearly 40-year absence, McDonald rejoined the Doobie Brothers in 2019 for their 50th anniversary tour and has remained with the group.

At 78, Santana maintains an ambitious schedule.

“I learned a long time ago to balance my life, so I don’t have one interview that I remember that I can read back and I said this is my last tour,” he said.

“I have never said that, and I will never say that. I do say I am rolling up my sleeves. I’m ready to go on the road and bring unity, harmony and oneness.

It helps that Santana’s wife, Cindy Blackman Santana, is the band’s drummer.

“When I look back and see the drummer, and she has this incredible divine smile, I just melt like ice cream,” he said. “I’m very grateful to God and to (singer-musician) Lenny Kravitz, because of Lenny Kravitz I discovered Cindy. Cindy is not only an incredible human being, a tremendous drummer, but she’s my wife, she’s my lover, she’s my partner.”

Santana has had a residency at the House of Blues in Las Vegas since 2012.

“The House of Blues is more like a laboratory to create a different kind of chemistry,” he said. “We try different African songs, different music from Bob Marley, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton.

On the road, we like to see crowds all the way to the rafters. I’m always

keeping an eye on those who know how to do it extremely well, like AC/ DC and Bad Bunny. It’s inspiring to see unity, harmony and oneness, all-inclusiveness. Those are the real artists like Michael Jackson and Prince. They bring this energy that people are not afraid to rub shoulders and smile with each other.”

Santana’s 2025 album, “Sentient,” includes new music, previously unreleased and revisited collaborations with Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Miles Davis and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels.

“The thing about Santana that I learned since the ‘60s is we have room to include everyone we love,” Santana said. “I learned a lot from (record promoters) Bill Graham and Clive Davis about presenting yourself and leaving a willingness to play with everyone who gets in front of you and complement, that’s the key word.

It’s not to compete or compare, it’s to complement.”

Santana burst through during the Summer of Love in the San Francisco music scene in 1967 and performed at Woodstock in 1969.

“I’m encouraged that I’m living in a time where I’m watching humans evolve to the next level of graduation,” he said. “I have never seen so many billions, not millions, billions of people marching together for one particular cause, whether it was a cause of ‘No Kings,’ or a cause for ‘No ICE,’ but it was literally billions and billions of people in America and around the world. That is encouraging to me as a hippie. I saw that, naturally, because we used to protest Vietnam. But to see it on another level in 2026, it’s really inspiring and encouraging to see that we as human beings are learning to not be afraid of one another and (show) a willingness to embrace and accept the fact that we really are all one.”

IWS celebrates America

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Indiana Wind Symphony Music Director Jay Gephart wanted the 2025-26 season’s final concert to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday.

“But we’re also reminded of the very special holiday of Memorial Day that is that weekend,” he said.

The IWS’s “American Tapestry” concert is set Strutz for 7:30 p.m. May 23 at the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“We have a guest soloist and two guest vocalists singing with us in the concert, so I think it’s going to be a spectacular Memorial Day weekend concert,” Gephart said.

Guest soloist Kelleen Strutz will perform George Gershwin’s “Concerto in F” on piano. Cherrssa Lawson, who joined the IWS for a holiday concert in December 2024, is one of the vocalists. Lawson will present a gospel performance of

“The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Briton Weise will sing “God Bless the USA.” The first act opens with “Fanfare 250’ that was composed for the anniversary

The second piece is “American Overture for Band,” with IWS founder Charles Conrad as conductor. Conrad is making his first appearance on stage with the symphony since retiring following the 2023-24 season.

Conrad Gephart said the second half of the concert features Taylor’s powerful arrangement of George Root’s “The Battle Cry of Freedom.”

There will be an audience participation piece titled, “The Ultimate Patriotic Sing-Along.” The lyrics will be in the concert program.

Conrad will receive the James B. Calvert Award, which recognizes an outstanding music educator from Indiana, at the conclusion of the concert. IWS has presented the award since 2004.

Area vocalists featured editorial@youarecurrent.com Forty of the nation’s most talented high school vocalists have been selected to participate in the 2026 Songbook Academy, a weeklong summer intensive that immerses young performers in the gold standard of storytelling through song and helps them develop as artists under the guidance of Broadway stars, entertainment professionals and leading arts educators.

Now in its 17th year, the Songbook Academy is the flagship education program of the Great American Songbook Foundation. The 2026 Songbook Academy will take place July 11-18 at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. The program includes workshops, masterclasses, and performance opportunities that help participants hone their vocal and stage skills, particularly in song interpretation, while building friendships and professional connections that last a lifetime.

Finalists include seven from Carmel High School: Sadie Cohen, Aarthi Eswaran, Grady Griffin, Ian Jones, Annabelle Kim, Krishaa Motycka, and Han-

Songbook Foundation founder and five-time Grammy nominee Michael Feinstein and a soon-to-be-announced celebrity guest mentor will offer real-time feedback to 10 randomly selected participants July 13 during the Public Masterclass. Then, July 16, the Songbook Showcase will feature all 40 students in solo performances, along with special appearances by Feinstein and Broadway star Mandy Gonzalez.

The week culminates July 18, with the Songbook Academy in Concert with all 40 singers.

Many reasons to fear ICE Editor, The May 5 Current article featuring the voices of Carmel residents in support of the local ICE office states that “law-abiding immigrants” have no reason to be afraid of ICE. I disagree. My first-person experience working with immigrants is why.

Obama’s administration deported more than 2 million immigrants and that President George W. Bush devised the “catch and release” approach: undocumented immigrants who were caught were arrested, fingerprinted, assigned a court appearance, and then released.

Few showed up for the court date.

Most recognize that President Joe Biden overcorrected for President Donald Trump’s harsh immigration policies, but few recognize that he swung back and was regaining border control at the end of his term. Fewer still recognize that a 2024 bipartisan bill, which would have improved immigration policy, was voted down by Republicans.

Few Americans understand America’s complex immigration policy, but most understand and recognize injustice.

Don’t let bobcats go extinct Editor, Never in my lifetime did I think I would see the Indiana Department of Natural Resources push a proposal that could cause the extinction of a native, beloved species in Indiana. But that’s exactly what’s happening.

Last year, the DNR allowed hobbyist trappers to kill more than 250 bobcats.

There was no justification for this other than recreational opportunity for the tiny number of Hoosiers who wanted to kill bobcats for trophies or to sell fur.

It was the first recreational trapping season for bobcats since bobcats were protected decades ago after nearly becoming extinct in the state due to excessive trapping and hunting.

Now, it seems history may repeat itself. A politically motivated proposal would increase the number of bobcats that could be trophy hunted and recreationally trapped to 400 annually. The DNR’s own data shows that killing that many bobcats could reduce the bobcat population by up to 100 percent within 10 years – meaning, no more bobcats.

All while they still have no idea how 2025’s trapping season impacted our bobcat population.

This harmful proposal must be stopped. I encourage fellow Hoosiers to call Gov. Mike Braun and submit a respectful comment to the DNR’s Rulemaking Docket webpage.
