Filing period closes for Westfield Washington Schools board candidates

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com The filing period has closed for candidates interested in running for open school board seats, and voters will have two competitive races for Westfield Washington Schools Board of Trustees in November.

At the close of filing June 18, the atlarge seat had two candidates, Republican incumbent Amber Huff Willis and Democrat Gabriel Crawford-Paree.

District 2 incumbent Bill Anderson, Republican, will run unopposed to retain his seat.

For District 4, incumbent Republican Rebecca Ogle will face challenger Steven Castle, who is unaffiliated with a political party.

ANDERSON Anderson, an IT project manager, was first elected to the WWS Board of Trustees in 2018 and was reelected in 2022. He has served as board secretary, vice president and president during his tenure.

In response to a message from Current, Anderson said he enjoys serving the community Anderson of Westfield and wants to continue to work toward the future of Westfield schools.

“Westfield Schools have prepared students for their future lives very well for a lot of years,” he said. “We have one of the highest College Readiness scores in the state. Westfield schools are great first and foremost because of the families in our community who are committed to education. I am running to represent them.”

Anderson cited the completion of projects such as the aquatic center, the early learning center, the new tennis center, Shamrock Station and new

school buildings that are in progress.

He said his top three issues are continuing to serve the children in the community and keeping them safe; carrying out a long-term vision to provide educational opportunities for students and implementing a long-term plan to retain and attract the “best and the brightest” to Westfield Washington Schools.

Anderson added that the district has been improving options for students who do not plan to go to college, with plans to expand those programs.

CASTLE Castle stated in a news release that the primary obligation of a public school system is to provide an education that will prepare all students to live in a complex, interconnected and diverse world.

“A school board has an obligation to make decisions that honor the education and experience Castle of well-qualified support staff, teachers and administrators in providing that education,” he stated.

Castle, originally from Iowa, previously taught special education in his home town and worked as a behavior consultant to school districts in northeast Iowa. He later moved to the Chicago area and took on various roles in that same field, finishing his career as director of special education in Mundelein, Ill. He stated that after retiring in 2015, he and his wife, Gail, moved to Westfield to be closer to family, adding that two of their grandchildren attended Westfield Washington Schools. Although he’s officially retired, Castle stated that he still works as an advocate for parents of children with special

needs.

“My 38 years in public education and my 10 years as an advocate have taught me the importance of listening, tolerance, kindness and cooperation,” he stated. “In these current times, with our public schools under almost constant attack, I believe listening, tolerance, kindness and cooperation need to be brought into focus. Westfield Washington Schools have an outstanding reputation. I would honor the opportunity to build on and improve that reputation.”

CRAWFORD-PAREE In a statement sent to Current, Crawford-Paree said he grew up in Fishers and moved to Westfield in 2022 with his wife, in part because of the high quality public school system for their future kids.

“My background is in engineering, which provides me with a strong basis in Crawford-Paree collaborative problem solving,” he stated. “I believe my public education here in Hamilton County was the backbone of getting where I am today.”

He started attending school board meetings to get acquainted with the district and said he would like to improve board agendas, so that the public is better informed of what the board will be discussing. He said it also seemed difficult for the public to submit statements, speak at meetings or get information from their school board representatives.

“Alongside this, when the Statehouse supermajority made their changes to school funding and the school board election process last year, that was what pushed me over the edge to run,” Continued on Page 5

he stated. “The Republican party in my view has taken a stance against public education in the state. I filed to run as a Democrat, not because I want to bring partisanship to the school board, but because the Republicans have made basic support of public education a partisan issue.”

He said running as a Democrat is a flag indicating where he stands on public education.

Crawford-Paree said his primary campaign issues are to promote transparency and community engagement with the school board, support and retain teachers, and protect and shield the school system from partisan attacks.

Willis first was elected to the WWS Board of Trustees in 2015 and is completing her third term. According to her profile on the board website, she is a lifelong Westfield resident and attended WWS, graduating in 1999. She graduated from Miami University in 2003, and her children now attend Westfield Willis High School and Cornerstone Preschool.

“I believe wholeheartedly in giving back to the community in which I was raised by getting involved,” she stated. “I am a member of the Westfield Education Foundation, a Hamilton County Leadership Academy Alumnus, a member of the Westfield Business Development Committee, a member of the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis, Westfield 4-H Club Leader and most importantly, a member of Northview Church.”

She previously has been involved with the Downtown Westfield Association, the Westfield Chamber of Commerce and other organizations.

OGLE On her campaign website, westfieldschoolboardcandidates.com, Ogle stated that she was born and raised in Sheridan, attended Franklin College and moved to Carmel after earning her degree in accounting in 1996. She said her family moved to Westfield when her oldest son was 6 months old because of Ogle the school system.

“Our youngest son, Elliott, has been the biggest beneficiary of our school system, able to keep pace with his classmates despite struggling with mental health issues and a three-year battle with leukemia,” she stated. “The administration, teachers and resource assistance at Carey Ridge provided more than just educational support to our family during his time there.”

Her younger son now is a junior at Westfield High School and her oldest is at Franklin College, studying business and playing football.

Ogle stated that she is a certified public accountant, a certified fraud examiner, certified construction industry financial professional and a chief financial officer for a professional safety consulting company in Indianapolis.

“My professional experience allows me to bring business expertise plus sound accounting and finance best practices to board discussions and decisions,” she stated. “As one of the largest businesses in Westfield, it is important to have a proven financial professional serving on the board.”

County GOP calls for election fraud investigation

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Hamilton County GOP officials are calling for a criminal investigation into 10 fake signatures found on a petition to place former Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard on the November ballot for Indiana secretary of state.

Hamilton County GOP Massillamany Chair Mario Massillamany said in a June 18 statement that Indiana State Police and the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office should investigate and prosecute the person who submitted the fraudulent signatures.

The petition is part of an effort to collect the required voter signatures to add Ballard to the November election ballot.

“The irony cannot be overstated,” Massillamany stated. “Greg Ballard is running for the very office charged with protecting Indiana’s elections and a volunteer on his campaign has been caught committing election fraud. If you cannot run an honest petition drive, you have no business running the office that safeguards our elections.”

Ballard’s campaign released a statement in response, noting that the “rogue individual” has been removed from the campaign.

“This is the system working exactly the way it’s supposed to,” the statement added. “It’s why all signatures are verified by the counties and why each signature gatherer has to sign each petition sheet attesting to the validity of the signatures on it.”

Ballard’s campaign stated that the 10 signatures represent about .02 percent of the more than 35,000 collected and turned in at that time.

Ballard served two terms as mayor of Indianapolis from 2008 to 2016. He is

running as an independent candidate.

Hamilton County Elections Administrator Beth Sheller confirmed that a nominating petition had included some potentially fake names.

“We had someone who dropped off many pages of petitions,” she said in an email. “During the certifying of these signatures, we found one page that appears to possibly Ballard be fraudulent.”

Sheller said Indiana State Police picked up the petition about two weeks before the county GOP’s statement was released.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joshua Kocher said in a June 18 email that he was aware of Massillamany’s statements related to the collection of signatures for a political candidate’s ballot access.

“The integrity of the election process is fundamental to our maintaining public trust in our democratic institutions,” Kocher said. “As with any allegation of criminal conduct, our office will review any information provided and work with the appropriate investigative agencies to determine if criminal charges are appropriate in Hamilton County. It would be inappropriate to comment further on any specific investigation at this time.”

Massillamany urged election officers throughout the state to carefully scrutinize all Ballard petition documents and called on the Indiana Election Division to flag and audit petition pages from the person who collected the fake signatures.

In a June 23 announcement, the Ballard campaign stated that it had submitted about 64,000 petition signatures to county clerks — more than the 37,000 required —and would continue collecting signatures through the end of the month.

Westfield boys golf repeat as state champs

By David Jacobs david@youarecurrent.com Conditions were far from perfect at Prairie View Golf Club for the second and final round of the June 16-17 IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals, but that did not stop Westfield from winning the team and individual titles.

Top-ranked defending champion Westfield shot a two-day total score of 592 to edge No. 8 Center Grove, which shot 593, to win its second consecutive state title. Guerin Catholic was third with 596.

Westfield senior Hudson Kutchma won the individual championship with a two-day 142 after winning a twohole playoff against Guerin senior Eli Wessel.

The Shamrocks’ other scorers were seniors Ryan Cesare and Mitchell Keene, junior Brayden Worthington and sophomore Keaton Kott.

Cesare made the winning putt after the Trojans triple-bogeyed the 18th hole to end the rain-soaked tournament as Westfield parred on the last two holes to secure the win.

Leading up to the 18th, Kutchma had bogeyed holes No. 16 and 17 to cede the lead to Wessel.

“I knew on (the) 16th (hole that) I went long,” Kutchma said. “I knew I had to try and make par, but I made

bogey. I saw Mitchell Keane, and that cheered me up and kept me going.”

With Kutchma a hole ahead of Wessel in the final pairings, the senior was able to get onto the green in two shots and two-putt to save a birdie and tie things up at 2-underpar.

As Wessel’s group concluded play, he didn’t make birdie, which set up a playoff with Kutchma in a full downpour.

“Coach (Josh) Bryant always tells me that I play better in the rain,” Kutchma said. “As a golfer, I feel like I’m just a kid that never gives up.”

The victory marks the first time a school produced back-to-back individual champions since Jeremy Wilkerson of South Bend Clay won consecutive titles in 1994 and 1995, and the first time since Anderson did it in 1952 and 1953 that a school swept the individual and team championships in consecutive seasons.

Will Harvey won the individual title last year for the Shamrocks. “(The double) just means a lot,” Kutchma said. “I was thinking (about the) team all day. Whatever I could do to help, I was glad I could make a birdie on the last hole to support my team.

They’ve all been my buddies and best friends along the way. Will (Harvey) won it last year, so it was nice to see him running after me. It meant a lot.”

Westfield kicks off Citizens on Patrol program

The Westfield Police Department has launched its new Citizens on Patrol program, which trains civilian volunteers to patrol trails, parks, public spaces and community events, identify suspicious activity and report safety concerns.

The program is designed to strengthen public safety through resident engagement, visibility and proactive crime prevention, according to a news release.

“Public safety is strongest when it is a shared responsibility between law enforcement and the community we serve,” WPD Chief Shawn Keen stated.

“Our Citizens on Patrol volunteers are dedicated residents who have stepped forward to support Westfield in a meaningful way. Their visibility … will help us strengthen neighborhood connections, identify concerns more quickly and continue building the trust that is essential to effective policing.”

trained volunteers who are not sworn law enforcement officers. They do not conduct enforcement activities, make arrests or carry weapons. They serve as observers and ambassadors, reporting

concerns and assisting with community engagement efforts, the news release stated.

To be eligible for the program, participants must first complete the Westfield Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy. Program members also are trained in CPR, AED, de-escalation techniques and police radio operations.

COP patrols are conducted on foot and by golf cart, with volunteers working alongside WPD and maintaining communication with on-duty supervisors.

OBITUARY Dan Schwinghammer, 81, of Westfield, passed away on June 17, 2026. He was born, July 2, 1944, in St. Cloud, MN to Willard and Bernice (Henkemeyer) Schwinghammer.

He grew up on the family dairy farm and attended Crosier seminary, Onamia, MN. He then continued his education receiving a Bachelor’s degree at St. John’s University, Collegeville, MN, and his Master’s degree at Spaulding University, Louisville, KY. Dan was married to Judy Knettel on June 10, 1967. One month after their marriage, Dan was drafted into the Army and attended U.S. Office Candidate School at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. Immediately thereafter, he was assigned to Field Artillery Officer duty in Korea.

After his tour on active duty, Dan continued his military service with the U.S. Army Reserve for a cumulative total of 37 years and retired as a Colonel. Units that he commanded during this time period included C Battery 4/76 Field Artillery (Korea); 212th Supply and Service Battalion (Jeffersonville, IN); 123rd Support Group (Indianapolis); Eighth U.S. Army Augmentation Command (Korea/ Indianapolis); 6035 Garrison Support Unit (Indianapolis). He also commanded Miliary Intelligence units that supported varied intelligence agencies.

Dan was employed by the Department of Defense for over 30 years. He served as Command Executive Officer for the Army Reserve and also was a logistics instructor for the Armor School at Ft. Knox, KY. He received the Legion of Merit for exemplary

military service and also Distinguished Civilian Service Award for duty with the Department of Defense.

Dan and Judy treasured their time together and spent their retirement focusing on family. They found solace in cultivating beauty in the flower garden under Judy’s guidance, enjoyed working on fitness together, (especially swimming) baking sourdough bread, and cooking healthy meals. Their most precious times were interacting with their daughters and grandchildren, and great grandchildren. The activities were varied and extensive to include hiking, board games, cribbage, Mexican train, Old Maid, wood working, and sharing time together.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, and who was a loyal companion and supported him faithfully throughout his military career.

He is also survived by two loving daughters, Caren (James) Roach and Kristen (Adam) Carroll; six grandchildren, Brittany (Stephen) Slaton, Brooke, Ashley, and John (Savannah) Bock, and Ally and Avery Carroll; two great grandchildren Sophie Bock, and Theodore Lucas; siblings, Bob (Joan), William (Cindy), Tim, Ruth (Chuck), Loren (Kari), Paul (Barb), Charles, David (Michele), Tom (Kim), Jerry (Lia), and Joan.

In addition to his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his brothers, Tom, Jim, Roger, Peter and Johnny; sisters Mary and Margaret.

A private family service with Military Honors will be held in Marion National Cemetery.

ROCK THE FOURTH Westfield expands Independence Day celebration in honor of America’s 250th

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Westfield’s multiday celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday will culminate with a bigger-than-ever Westfield Rocks the Fourth celebration, set for 4 to 10:30 p.m. July 4 at the Grand Park Sports Complex.

Director of Community Engagement Matt Deck said planning for the 2026 celebration started about two years ago when Mayor Scott Willis assumed office.

“He is a 30-year veteran of the Marine Corps and retired as a colonel, and patriotism in this country is very important to him,” Deck said. “He wanted to make sure that Westfield really stood out when it came to celebrating this event.”

To that end, the city tied in its Thursday Farmers Market July 2 with a patriotic theme, and added a parade on July 3 — a day that most people will have off from work because the Fourth of July falls on a Saturday. The main festivities on July 4 open at 4 p.m. at Grand Park Sports Complex and kick off with a 5 p.m. concert by the Flying Toasters, ending at 7 p.m.

“At roughly 7:05, we’ll have an honor guard and the national anthem … and then at 7:15, we will have our annual Frank’s Franks Hot Dog Eating Contest,” Deck said, noting that Peter Rush is the returning champion — again. “I believe he has won at the last — I can’t tell you exactly how many, but at least the last five or six years — so, we’ll be excited to have him back.”

New this year will be the addition of two large screens on the main stage to help everyone in the audience better see the entertainment.

“And then we’re going to take our big Parks video screen and put it … in between where the stage is and our vendors are and our Kids Zone is, so that it can also display what’s going on on the stage,” he said, adding that there also will be a mobile camera interacting with people in the crowd, getting their impressions. “I think we have created a much higher level of connectivity with the audience by putting these three large screens, and then having a mobile camera that can roam about. It’s just going to create a greater connectivity, especially for a footprint as large as ours, which occupies a full parking lot and really almost four full-size football fields.”

The event footprint includes a large Kid Zone with activities and entertainment for the younger set, including inflatables, face painting, a watermelon-eating contest and various performances. Parents can register ahead of time for kid zone wristbands at westfieldin.gov/399/Westfield-Rocks-The-4th.

Deck said there also will be more than 20 food vendors in Parking Lot C, including Frank’s Franks, ribs, gyros and a variety of beverages. He said the annual

event usually draws up to 13,000 people, and he expects this year’s to exceed that number.

At 8 p.m., the party will pick up with The 1985 taking the stage, playing hits from the 1980s until around 10 p.m.

“That’s when the big fireworks and drone show start,” Deck said. “Typically, those shows are about 20 to 22 minutes. This year, the show is going to be around 27 to 28 minutes long. So, attendees will get

a longer drone display, they’ll get a longer fireworks show and we have had to create a bigger fallout zone because they will be using even larger mortars for even brighter and better explosions in the night sky.”

Deck said Westfield’s fireworks and drone show is a signature moment for the Fourth of July every year, and is known in Hamilton County and beyond.

“We really see people from all over Hamilton County, and really the state of Indiana,” he said.

“Our fireworks show has really created a wonderful reputation. There’s a lot of communities that do stuff during the day, but we feel that our fireworks and drone show, which is always on July 4 and always in the evening, has really established itself as one of the preferred activities every year around our country’s birthday.”

Red, White & Bloom kicks off America 250

By Hannah VanLandingham hannah@youarecurrent.com The kickoff event for the City of Westfield’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary is called Red, White and Bloom — the July 2 Westfield Farmer’s Market. The patriotic-themed event will run from 5 to 8 p.m. and will feature special themed products, Fourth of July specials, family-friendly activities and renditions of Americana hits from the live musician on-site.

“I’m looking forward to seeing people create memories while they’re at the market,” Westfield Markets Manager Molly O’Connor said. “In addition to shopping with our local vendors, we’ve added some fun experiences this year, including beautiful floral photo oppor-

tunities provided by Westfield Flower Box, and a vintage VW photo bus that will print photo strips live on-site. I think families, friends and visitors are going to have a great time capturing those special moments together.”

Much thought is put into the organization of each market, she said, in hopes of creating a positive experience for vendors and patrons.

New Westfield store to offer gourmet popcorn

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Ed Koczan used to play “shopkeeper” when he was a kid and he’s made that childhood dream a reality with his new store, Pop Junction, a small-batch specialty popcorn shop in the heart of Westfield.

Koczan, a Westfield resident since 2012, has worked in sales and marketing and said he started looking for business opportunities a few years ago. He considered a variety of options, from construction to LEGO resale. But then, he said, he and his wife were watching a documentary about a popcorn business.

“I told her, ‘I would totally go do that,’ and she’s like, ‘Well, why don’t you go do that?’” he said. And so it began.

First, Koczan needed to find a space, which is challenging in a popular and growing city like Westfield. One spot was leased before he could even look at it, another wasn’t quite what he wanted. He said he had stopped at Rivet Coffee Bar on Jersey Street for a coffee and spotted a “for lease” sign on a house just down the street — a former bakery.

Within 36 hours, he signed a lease for 203 Jersey St. Koczan invested in some sweat equity to renovate the interior and ordered all the specialized equipment needed to start his popcorn shop — including the same kind of industrial popper Skinny Pop uses. The difference is, he has one popper compared to the 40-plus the na-

tional brand has in constant use.

“We came up with the name Pop Junction to kind of align with the nature of the proximity to Grand Junction Plaza,” he said. “The concept model is … small-batch gourmet popcorn, producing everything on-site.”

Popcorn products will include popular flavors such as movie butter, cheddar and caramel, along with unique options offered on a rotation, like dill pickle. Koczan said the store also will sell retro candy like Big League Chew bubble gum and wax lips, as well as chilled classic sodas in glass bottles.

“The folks at Grand Junction Plaza have done a great job with putting on events here,” he said. “Between concerts, movies in the park, the farmers market is here weekly, and all the other community events — I’m about 100 feet away from that, so I want to try to have something so families that come in, you can kind of grab-and-go — grab a drink, grab some candy, grab some popcorn and go enjoy the park, or wherever you’re going.”

Popcorn has a nostalgic appeal, he said, and it’s an affordable indulgence for families.

As of mid-June, Koczan was putting the finishing touches on Pop Junction with the hope of a soft opening before the July 4 holiday. He said he’s excited to welcome customers to his store, adding that the City of Westfield has been supportive and helpful as he got his new business off the ground.

Local pediatricians address summer safety news@currentinwestfield.com Community Health Network-Westfield pediatricians Dr. Amanda Asbury and Dr. Michael Zimmerman recently answered the following questions from Current about how to keep kids and the whole family safe during the summer months.

WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SUMMER-RELATED INJURIES/ILLNESSES? • Fractures • Head injuries and concussions • Sunburns • Heat-related illness • Insect and tick bites • Drowning WHAT TREATMENT/PREVENTION DO YOU SUGGEST? For fractures, treatment depends on severity and may include immobilization with a splint, walking boot or cast. More complex fractures may require surgical intervention. To prevent fractures, wear appropriate protective gear for sports. Trampolines can be an

especially dangerous source of fractures especially in young kids. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children, especially those younger than 6, avoid trampolines.

If you do allow older children to jump, ensure that an adult is present, netting is zipped up and only one jumper is allowed at a time.

After head injuries/ Asbury concussions, a gradual return to play and school is recommended, with close monitoring for symptom recurrence. Avoiding a second head impact during recovery is critical. Prevention includes wearing properly fitted helmets for biking, skating and contact sports. Children under 16 should avoid ATVs and high-risk motorized activities.

To treat sunburns, apply cool compresses or give a cool bath and use soothing moisturizers or aloe-based lotions.

If blisters form, leave them intact and monitor for infection. To prevent sunburns, wear sun-protective clothing, apply sunscreen with an SPF greater than 30 to all exposed skin and reapply

every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. For infants under 6 months, minimize direct sun exposure and rely on shade, protective clothing and wide-brimmed hats rather than sunscreen.

Heatstroke is a medical emergency. If a child has an elevated temperature — above 104 — and is not acting like themselves, call 911 and Zimmerman immediately immerse in cold water.

Oral antihistamines or topical hydrocortisone can relieve itching from insect bites. Check for ticks after outdoor activities in places where ticks live, especially in or near woodlands. Pay special attention to the armpit, hairline, ears, groin and behind the knees. Ticks should be removed promptly using finetipped tweezers. The risk of Lyme disease transmission increases after 36 to 48 hours of attachment. To prevent tick bites, wear permethrin-treated clothing and apply DEET-containing insect repellent to exposed skin (approved for children older than 2 months). Tuck

To prevent drowning, multiple layers of protection — barriers, supervision, swim lessons, life jackets and CPR training — are recommended because no single strategy prevents all drowning.

HAVE YOU NOTICED INCREASED INJURIES RELATED TO E-BIKES? E-bike injuries have increased over the last 10 years, although this is not surprising given the dramatic rise in use over that time period. What is more notable is that e-bike injuries tend to be much more severe than injuries on traditional bikes because of the greater speed involved, and e-bikes often are ridden on the same surface as motor vehicles. Helmet use and closed-toe shoes are essential for all e-bike riders.

FIREWORK INJURIES Fireworks are a significant source of burns, eye injuries and hand/finger injuries. It is important to teach children to stay an appropriate distance from fireworks and to have appropriate supervision.

Indy Opera set for final Lobster Palooza

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com This will be Indianapolis Opera’s 16th annual Lobster Palooza and will be special because it’s the last one.

Indianapolis Opera General Director David Starkey said the rising cost of lobsters the last several years will force the organization to find a new signature fundraiser. Lobster Palooza is set for 6 p.m. July 11 at Basile Opera Center, 4011 N. Pennsylvania St., Indianapolis “Lobster is a traded commodity around the world, so it is very volatile to global economic influences, which is a very interesting novelty of lobster,” Starkey said. “So, in our 16 years there have been periods where lobster is very available, it’s very affordable and there are times where it’s very expensive. It’s very expensive now and that doesn’t align very well when you are trying to raise money.”

Starkey said Indy Opera is welcome to new ideas people have presented to the organization.

“We need to put this theme aside and welcome the next theme, which is going to be around a festival idea, but build upon this great excitement that we have been able to influence for these last 16 years,” he said. “There’s still a lot of people that remember it fondly, but we need to grow into sort of the next evolution of how we partner with people.”

Starkey said there will be pictures and stories from the past about how Lobster Palooza started.

The first Lobster Palooza was held in the back parking lot of the Basile Opera Center under a circus tent, the former site of GreekFest.

“Seventy percent of the people that visit our building will remember they attended GreekFest sometime in their lifetime,” Starkey said. “One of the things about (Indy Opera) doing Lobster Palooza outside and putting up the massive circus tent was to reflect on that festival environment that used to be on the property.”

Jimmy James’ mother was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, which was formerly in the neighborhood. The church and GreekFest moved to Carmel in 2009.

Muffi James was on the Indy opera company board for more than 20 years.

The event was held at Daniel’s Vineyard in 2021 and 2022.

Indianapolis Opera purchased the building at the end of 2020 and started a renovation. But the previous owner sold the parking lot separately.

“In 2023, we redesigned the event to be part of the restored building, the historical renovation of it, and to incorporate the 1-acre footprint that we are on today,” Starkey said.

Starkey said the new theme will be announced later.

“I know we’ll have a festival environment in the summer and we’ll have singers,” he said.

 Carmel to become Songbook City — The City of Carmel is transforming into Songbook City next month to recognize the Carmel-based Great American Songbook Foundation and its work to preserve and celebrate the history of popular music. Founded in 2007 and headquartered at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts, the Songbook Foundation is known for its preservation efforts through the Songbook Library & Archives and its annual Songbook Academy summer intensive. Running from July 6 to 31, the Songbook City activation will include the temporary substitution of select street signs with the names of music legends, such as songwriter Cole Porter and vocalist Ella Fitzgerald. This year’s Songbook Academy, which starts July 11 includes three public events at the Payne & Mencias Palladium, all of which will also be livestreamed: There will be a free public masterclass at 2 p.m.

Indy Shorts features variety

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The Indy Shorts Film Festival will have something for the tastes of all filmgoers.

“We have a wide range of world-class short films,” Heartland Film Artistic Director Greg Sorvig said. “You are going to get a grab bag of different types of things, whether it’s a comedic short film made right here in InSorvig diana or animated films that are meant for kids and some not meant for kids.”

Heartland Film announced June 25 Indy Shorts will feature 266 films across 40 theme programs, such as horror, comedy, love and dating, music and sports. The screenings, set for July 21-26, will be at the Indy Art Center, Living Room Theaters and Newfields.

The films are 40 minutes or less, Sorvig said.

“We’re coming off a historic run with the most Oscar-nominated shortlisted films that we organically had at our festivals,” Sorvig said. “Every year we think, ‘How do we get bigger, how do we continue to grow?’”

“The Sinners” was Oscar-nominated as a live action short through Indy Shorts last year and went on to win the Academy Award.

Sam Davis, “The Sinners” director, will be honored with the Pioneering Spirit Award during Indy Shorts.

“It’s an honor we give somebody in the prime of their career,” said Sorvig, a Carmel resident. “(The award goes to) someone who meets our mission and is doing big things. We were extremely proud to have that film last year. We’re going to bring it back and have an encore of Oscar Shorts outdoors at the Amphitheater at Newfields. It’s a great homecoming for Sam and everybody else.”

Sorvig said there is a fun, Willy Wonka-type theme.

“With everything else going on in the world, you can kind of escape into this shorts candy factory,” he said.

“You can see some great movies and do all that right here in Indiana. We just want films that can do more than entertain, something that can ignite

imagination or conversation, films that are very thoughtful and maybe expand on the expected genre. There are some big names in there, maybe people you’ve seen in movies or TV shows. Then there are ones that are true independent films with shoestring budgets.”

Sorvig said the magic of short films is that the filmmaker doesn’t need a huge budget to produce.

Comedian-actress Janeane Garofolo appears in “My Bird is Sick.” Comedian and actor Tony Cavalero stars in two U.S. premiere films, “American Rampage” and “Please and Thank You.” Carmel filmmaker Ashton Gleckman’s world premiere of “Sylvia” focuses on the death of Sylvia Likens in 1965 in Indianapolis. Likens, 16, was tortured to death by her caregiver Gertrude Baniszewski and her children and some neighbors.

“Ashton does a really great job of bringing her legacy to this film and making sure people remember her,” Sorvig said.

Filmmakers are competing for more than $35,000 in cash prizes, including three $5,000 Grand Prize Awards. The three Grand Prize winners also will receive their Oscar qualifications in their designated categories at the July 25 awards program.

As a homeowner who pays property taxes every year, which already increase every year due to “trending,” saying “yes” to the school district is ludicrous.

With more and more students pouring

into the schools from the surrounding nonproperty-tax-paying apartment communities, having the wallets emptied out of actual homeowners isn’t the solution.

We have four children. Two of whom went through WWS, and two through private schools, so we know the value of both pathways. Perhaps WWS needs to focus on ways to cut expenses and trim the administrative budgets rather than going to the homeowners’ well each and every time they feel less than stellar.
