36 luxury homes proposed within Village of WestClay

Thirty-six new luxury homes could be built on mostly vacant land surrounded by the Village of WestClay in Carmel.

Christopher Scott Homes is proposing to build the three- and four-story dwellings north of W. Main Street and west of Dumbarton Street. The project, known as Hampstead, would replace two homes on 9 acres. The proposed site is surrounded by residential properties.

Hampstead is proposed as a planned unit development, meaning development standards would be specific to the site. PUDs are subject to review and a vote from the Carmel Plan Commission and Carmel City Council.

The proposed homes are expected to sell for $1.5 million to $2 million and include three or four bedrooms, elevator access, rooftop terraces, optional attached garages and other amenities, according to documents filed with the City of Carmel’s Department of Community Services.

“The proposed single-family residential homes represents a well-considered and contextually appropriate addition to the surrounding area,” the document states. “Similar housing types exist nearby, and the development is designed to complement and enhance the established pattern of single-family residences while introducing a refined and cohesive architectural character.”

The Hampstead development would also include a pocket park and a retention pond with a fountain.

The earliest the proposal could be presented to the plan commission is July 21.

In 2023, a Carmel Plan Commission hearing officer approved plans for a 4,500-square-foot tavern to be built within the Proscenium I development.

Construction never began, and now developers are proposing an office building with a coffee shop there instead.

The 7,000-square-foot building on a quarter acre would house Novo Development Group, which partnered with the Carmel Redevelopment Commission on the $85 million Proscenium I project near Range Line Road and Carmel Drive. Novo is currently based elsewhere in the Proscenium.

Since opening the Proscenium in 2020, Novo has worked with the CRC to develop a second phase east of Range Line Road and is planning to build a third phase east of Carmel City Hall.

City partners with Change.org

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The City of Carmel is participating in a pilot program with Change.org to help identify how local government can best support area businesses.

Through the Civic Dialogues initiative, Carmel residents may submit ideas on this topic online through July 6. Change.org will gather the data and form a group of residents to discuss top ideas and draft an action plan to implement them. The final result will be shared with local officials.

Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam said she will review the proposals and determine whether the city will make changes.

“Our local business community is the heartbeat of Carmel, and ensuring its

continued success requires an ongoing, collaborative effort,” Finkam stated in a press release. “The Civic Dialogues initiative ensures that everyone has a seat at the table and a meaningful opportunity to actively shape the future of our city.”

There is no cost to the city to participate in the program.

Duncan Lockard, general manager of Civic Dialogues at Change.org, said local collaboration can make a difference.

“Change.org will host an online space where residents can not only share their own ideas on what would be good for the city, but support and build on others’ ideas as well,” Lockard said.

Mayors plan regional public safety summit

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com A week after calling out Indianapolis officials for a “lack of leadership” in allowing repeat offenders to commit crimes in nearby communities, Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam is partnering with Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett to create a Regional Mayors’ PubFinkam lic Safety Partnership Summit.

The mayors announced the summit June 5 by issuing a joint statement.

“Crime takes a toll on every community,” the Hogsett statement reads. “Individuals who commit crimes often move among jurisdictions, creating challenges that no single community can solve alone. As mayors, we are committed to working together to address this critical issue on behalf of those we serve.”

Mayors and police chiefs from municipalities in Hamilton, Boone, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Morgan and Shelby counties will be invited to participate in the summit, which is expected to convene multiple times a year.

“As leaders of some of our nation’s most vibrant and dynamic communities, we look forward to expanding efforts that are already improving safety in our region and exploring solutions that benefit all who live, work, play and visit here,” Finkam and Hogsett stated.

Additional details will be released at a future date.

The No. 3 Greyhounds topped No. 6 Evansville Memorial 4-1 June 6 in the IHSAA state championship. They edged No. 5 Center Grove 3-2 in the quarterfinals and No. 15 Delta 4-1 in the semifinals, both June 5. Previously in the postseason, Carmel (18-2) topped No. 13 Zionsville, No. 1 Guerin Catholic, No. 4 Park Tudor and No. 12 South Bend Saint Joseph.

“They fully developed their games and who they are as people, and I think that’s a huge thing that really helped them come out on top,” first-year Greyhounds coach Kiersten Carlson said.

Sophomore Annie Mann got the clinching point at No. 3 singles. “(Mann) has put in so much extra work,” Carlson said. “She hit before school almost every single morning.

She has worked 1-on-1 with me. It’s so exciting to see all the extra work pay off.”

A Mann comeback was the reason the Greyhounds made it to the final. Trailing 5-3 in the third set against Center Grove’s Ragan Small in the quarterfinals, Mann came back to win 7-5.

“Our team had a lot of close matches all season, and there’s been a lot of people to pull through for us,” Mann said.

“I haven’t been the one to have a pressure match to get us to that last point, so I felt I owed it to my team. I just love our team, they’re all so supportive.”

Also getting points for CHS in the final were senior Alex Widjaja at No. 2 singles, seniors Gabby Hall and Maddie Littell at No. 1 doubles and junior Brylie Price and sophomore Shravya Pillutla at No. 2 doubles. Both doubles teams were unbeaten, with the No. 1 team advancing in the state doubles tourney.

Widjaja’s twin sister, Oliv, lost a tight match at No. 1 singles.

“When I found out that we won state already, I was just relaxed for the rest of my match,” Oliv said. “We won my freshman year, but I’m so grateful we get to experience it again and close out my high school tennis career with a bang.”

Alex Widjaja was up 5-2 in the second set but lost the next two games before holding on for a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Memorial’s Emery Folz.

“I got a few flashbacks in my head, because in last year’s regional round I was the deciding match and I was up in the match and lost it (to Brebeuf Jesuit),” Alexis said. “Those thoughts were floating in my head. I thought you have to battle through it, and that’s what I did.”

Carlson said the seniors were so valuable in the season’s success.

“They’ve meant so much,” Carlson said. “They’ve been leaders from Day 1.

I had a lot of questions coming in, and I could always lean on my four seniors on varsity, which made a huge difference. I give a lot of credit to their maturity and their leadership.”

Carlson, a 2018 CHS graduate, played on three state championship teams.

Carmel extended its record to 14 girls tennis state titles.

Carmel girls repeat as state track champions

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youcurrent.com The Carmel High School girls track and field team doesn’t have superstars.

But it does have a winning combination.

The Greyhounds repeated as IHSAA state champions June 5 with 49.5 points, 14.5 points ahead of second-place Bloomington South. It was Carmel’s fourth girls track state title.

“It’s amazing, winning one is hard enough, let alone back to back — just a great team effort,” Greyhounds coach Aaron McRill said. “Our team is basically built as a team. We have to get points everywhere. We don’t have one individual to get 30 points. We leaned a little heavy on our distance kids this year. We had some field event kids step in that weren’t expected to score. We scored in the pole vault and discus, which was awesome.”

Junior Ellie Cooley finished eighth in the discus, and junior pole vaulter Kate Hammond, seeded 15th, was tied for seventh.

“We lost some athletes who graduated after last year, but we were still able to come back and compete,” Larkin Taylor said. “I feel our distance runners were super strong. We had some good field events. It all just came together.

It’s been super to do it two years in a row and win twice in cross country, too.”

Carmel’s only first place came in the first event as the 3,200-meter relay of seniors Sadie Foley and Kaitlyn Oshimura and juniors Annabel Pollert and Taylor set a state record in 8 minutes, 49.46 seconds.

“They had it their goal to do that, and they went out and ran away with their thing,” McRill said. “It was fantastic.”

Foley, who will compete for Indiana University next season, finished second, and Taylor was third in the 1,600 meters.

Foley finished seventh in the 1,600 as a freshman, 12th as a sophomore and fifth as a junior.

Oshimura was third and Taylor sixth in the 800 meters.

Taylor said she struggled doing the three distance races in the regional.

“So, I was a little nervous coming into it at state,” Taylor said. “It ended up being good and I placed well in all. I had a PR in the 800 as well.”

Taylor said she will miss training with Foley.

“We race well together and build off each other,” Taylor said.

Foley will be missed by the coaches as well.

“Sadie has been amazing the past four years,” McRill said. “She is one of those athletes you are blessed to coach.

She does everything you ask. She’s humble. She works very hard. She ultimately cares about the team over her performance.”

Foley said the team has great balance.

“Last year we won this meet and didn’t win a single individual event,” she said. “You have to lean on your teammates and rely on each other.”

In the boys track and field state finals June 6, the Greyhounds didn’t fare as well, finishing in a tie for 17th. The highest finish was third place in the 3,200 relay.

 Jim Irsay Acts of Kindness Day — The Rotary Club of Carmel and Kiwanis Club of Carmel are partnering to launch the Jim Irsay 1976 Acts of Kindness Day in celebration of Carmel’s 50th anniversary as a city. Carmel contestants prepare for Miss Indiana, Teen events

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youcurrent.com Madelyn Steurer grew up watching the Miss America competition each year with her grandmother.

She thought last year was her final Miss Indiana event, but then organizers raised the age eligibility from 27 to 28.

So, Steurer will get to participate a third time when it is presented June 17 to 20 at STAR Bank Performing Arts Center in Zionsville. She was a Miss Indiana contestant in 2018 and 2025.

Steurer qualified by winning the Miss Capital City title. Sadie Cohen, who will be a Carmel High School senior in August, won the Miss Capital City’s Teen title and will compete in Miss Indiana’s Teen for the third consecutive year.

Steurer, who has lived in Carmel for two years, works in influence marketing.

“I’ve worked in luxury fashion and marketing for four years now, so pageantry is a really cool synergy,” she said.

Steurer said she loves having a platform to empower young women. Her community service initiative is Inspire Her Empire, which pairs girls with mentors.

“Typically, (the girls) come from underprivileged backgrounds and haven’t really had that kind of experience in their life,” she said. “We work on confidence building and identity building skills with their girls to be able to help them understand you can always achieve big dreams, even if you think they’re really far out of reach.”

Steurer, who gree up in Jeffersonville, has a degree in marketing, Italian

and French from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree in French from Notre Dame.

Cohen was second runner-up in 2024 and 2025. She also was Miss Capital City’s Teen in 2024.

“Miss America opportunity is the largest scholarship organization for women, so that’s the obvious driving point because it does so much good for many young women,” she said.

However, Cohen, who sings for the talent portion, said the people she has met are the No. 1 thing she enjoys about the event.

“You get to connect with so many different girls that you would have never met before,” she said.

Her community service initiative is “Sadie Smiles for Seniors,” which she said is designed to create meaningful connections across generations.

What do I love most?

EDITOR’S NOTE: Throughout the year, Current, in partnership with the Carmel Rotary Club, will publish columns from community members reflecting on Carmel’s 50 years as a city.

Commentary by Ron Carter When I was asked about writing this article for Carmel’s 50th anniversary as a city, my first thought was, “How do I choose?”

I love the schools, parks, the shopping, the police and fire services, the biking infrastructure, the streets, service clubs and the Center for the Performing Arts. I love the people and the volunteer spirit that is so prevalent in our city. I love the roundabouts and the roundabout art that makes Carmel, most probably, the world’s largest outdoor sculpture park. And there is much more to love.

You might think the Monon Trail would top my list, but it places second behind the Carmel Farmers Market.

I wrote an article for the market’s newsletter in 2023 about its founding 25 years prior. Here is an excerpt that helps explain this gem in our midst.

“Yes, a quarter century of helping our vendors build their own businesses. Of watching their children learning how to interact with customers by looking them in the eye. And learning how to get up early, set up a booth, and count change. What a pleasure it has been for all of us to watch those budding little entrepreneurs grow up, go off to college, get married, and, in some cases, take over the business from Mom and

CHS band raising funds to march in Rose Parade

Fundraising is an essential element every year for the Carmel High School band.

It’s even more imperative for the CHS Band Boosters this school year with an appearance in the Rose Parade set for Jan. 1, 2027, in Pasadena, Calif.

“We have kids that qualify for financial aid, so we want to be able to pay for their trip,” said Kasey Mills, vice president of fundraising for Band Boosters.

“We have to get all the equipment out to California, so that’s an added cost.”

There will be a car wash from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 27 at CHS. Mills said a bake sale will be added to the car wash.

Mills said the band will partner with Custom Fundraising Solutions for a mattress sale from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 9 in CHS Freshman Cafeteria.

The other big fundraiser is Community Night from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 23.

“The band performs, and there will be another bake sale for that,” she said.

Car raffle tickets will go on sale starting at a CarmelFest booth July 3-4. The winner can choose the car from D-Patrick Ford or $25,000 in cash.

The band’s drumline will perform to open Carmel PorchFest at noon Sept.

Taste of Carmel returns The Carmel Education Foundation will present Taste of Carmel, an annual fundraiser featuring more than 40 Hamilton County eateries, Aug. 27 at 502 East Event Centre. Guests can sample fare from restaurants, breweries, wineries, caterers and more.

Taste of Carmel moved from March to August this year to align with the beginning of the school year.

“Taste of Carmel is a celebration of what makes Carmel such a special place to live: excellent schools, incredible local businesses and a community that truly believes in supporting students and investing in the future of Carmel,” CEF CEO Jennifer Penix said. “As we celebrate CEF’s 60th anniversary, we’re excited to bring people together to celebrate the start of the school year while helping create opportunities for students to grow, thrive and prepare for their future.”

This year, CEF will mark its diamond 60th anniversary. Guests are encouraged to celebrate by wearing elevated attire, including items that sparkle, shimmer or shine.

OBITUARY Richard Allen Roberts, 74, of Carmel, Indiana, the former owner of Roberts Painting, passed away June 1, 2026, after a long illness. He was born on March 29, 1952, in Indianapolis, to the late Richard Earl and Sarah (Abston) Roberts.

Rick was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was known as a straight shooter, always honest regardless of whether the truth was what you wanted to hear. He had a great sense of humor, and his favorite jokes brought joy and laughter to those around him.

His values were deeply rooted in hard work and integrity. Rick instilled those values in the lives of young kids for which he was a mentor.

He was willing to help anyone in need and had a generous spirit.

Rick was a proud member of the Carmel Dads Club. In 1984, he started his own business in Carmel, Roberts Painting.

Rick found happiness in golfing, trips to the beach and vacations to Destin, Fla. These moments were made even more special by sharing them with loved ones. His preferred refreshment, Bud Lite, was often part of these gatherings.

Rick is survived by his loving wife, Debbie; children, Steven (Andrea) Roberts (grandchildren Harper Roberts and Axel Roberts); Tim (Lori) Roberts (grandchildren Parks Roberts and Payton Strayn); and Shawn Soumilas (grandchild Ian Soumilas); brother, Bill Abston; and step-brothers, Charlie Roberts and Kenny Roberts.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Richard Roberts; his mother, Sarah “Sally” (Abston); and a grandson, Zachary Soumilas.

A memorial gathering took place June 13 at Flanner Buchanan, Carmel, where a service immediately followed.

OBITUARY Patricia Agnes (Dean) Frey, age 92, passed peacefully into eternal life with Jesus Christ on May 28th 2026.

Born on December 16th, 1933 in Washington, Pa, she was the youngest daughter of O.E. and Ellen (Schneck) Dean. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Washington. Pat was always a wiz with numbers so she took a clerk job with Household Finance Corporation after graduation. Soon, a handsome, AllAmerican fraternity guy from Washington and Jefferson College caught her eye at a local dance. She told her friend that night she was going to marry him and in 1957, Pat married William Frey and enjoyed 63 years of being a loving wife until Bill’s passing in 2020. Pat’s biggest source of pride and her greatest legacy were her 5 children, 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren and she was a beloved “Nana” to all.

While Pat was a dedicated mother, she also was business saavy with an entrepreneurial spirit. She enjoyed many jobs outside the home throughout the years including doing taxes for H&R Block and becoming manager, creating “Patco”, a real estate photography company, and spending many years hosting clients at her home as a sales consultant for Doncaster clothing. She loved to watch the stock market and had a knack (and a lucky streak as anyone who has played bingo, bridge, backgammon or attended a raffle with her knows) and her favorite claim to fame and subject of family lore besides her hole in one on Woodland’s 16th hole was when she decided to buy Microsoft on its IPO back in 1986 for $21 a share.

Pat enjoyed being a member of Woodland Country Club and made many long-time friends there in her golf leagues and nights with the “Friday Night Crazies.” Her bowling

league created many more friends and great memories. In recent years, you could still see Pat and her impeccable French manicure at Woodland every Friday for bridge. Her friends were a constant source of support and laughter throughout the years and she cherished them dearly. She was also a devoted member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church for many years.

After years of flooding, Carmel residents demand solutions at town hall

Worrell said the city is working to identify funding to address the issue.

Snyder said the recently completed project was designed in 2014 and not updated before it was built. He proposed a $2 million project — also funded through the proposed stormwater fee increase — to level the ditches with permeable gravel and install an oversized culvert.

Snyder said city councilors are “committed to fixing the issues” raised during the meeting.

“You have gotten nothing but lip service (in the past), and I absolutely expect you to challenge us in a couple months and say, ‘(Remember the) town hall,’” he said. “Hold us accountable.”

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com As redevelopment has transformed Carmel from a bedroom suburb to a bustling urban-style community in recent decades, some longtime residents feel their neighborhoods have been left behind.

Dozens of residents from some of the city’s oldest subdivisions near Carmel’s central core attended a town hall meeting June 3 at the Carmel Clay Public Library to express frustration about longstanding flooding issues, aging infrastructure and a road that’s been proposed for decades but never built.

Members of the Carmel City Council organized the event, and many of them attended. Councilor Ryan Locke said feedback gathered at the meeting would be presented to the mayor’s office, which he believes has focused too many resources on attracting new residents at the expense of those already living there.

“Over the course of the last two and half years of us on council, we’ve seen a lot of things that put our residents not first,” he said.

Allie Missler, who has lived in Concord Village for 30 years, said she has documented correspondence with city officials dating back more than two decades tracking flooding problems caused by failing infrastructure. She said her family has lost trees, fencing and a pergola to floods and has spent thousands of dollars trying to address the issue.

“We’ve always been told our neighborhood was on the list. We were told engineering was studying the issue. We were told improvements were coming.

We were told to wait until next year,” she said. “At some point, next year must become this year. Meanwhile, the flooding has continued.”

City Engineer Bradley Pease said the city is considering a $1.2 million project to replace the concrete streets in the neighborhood with asphalt, with work possibly beginning sometime this year.

He said the city does not have enough funding to do more than that in the immediate future.

City Council President Matt Snyder said he views the plan as a “Band-Aid.”

“Repaving your road is a waste of money,” he said. “It needs replaced, and the sewer needs replaced at the same time.”

Snyder estimated that it would cost $20 million to rebuild the road with updated infrastructure underneath it, and he proposed raising the residential stormwater fee citywide from $6.85 to $10 per month to cover it.

“With that slight adjustment we can knock this project out,” he said, as well as address infrastructure issues in other parts of town.

Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam told Current June 8 that she does not support Snyder’s proposal.

“At a time when affordability is a chief concern for many members of our community as the cost of daily living continues to rise, I do not support substantially increasing stormwater fees at this time,” Finkam said. “My focus remains on responsible infrastructure planning while protecting taxpayers and utility ratepayers from unnecessary financial burdens.”

RICHLAND AVENUE EXTENSION Snyder also said he supports moving forward with a longtime proposal to extend Richland Avenue south from where it ends near Carmel Elementary school to City Center Drive. He said the extension has been discussed by city officials since the 1980s and has been in the com-

prehensive plan since 2000.

Kristina Wheeler, a member of the Carmel Clay Schools board of trustees, attended the meeting and said when Carmel Elementary was rebuilt five years ago, it was oriented to allow space for the extension. She said she supports the plan for several reasons.

“I get really concerned when we have a school at a dead end, from a traffic control perspective (and) from a safety perspective,” Wheeler said.

The roadways extension would require the removal of at least two homes, and Missler said the uncertainty surrounding the project has had “real consequences” for area homeowners.

“We deserve clarity, we deserve certainty, and we deserve a timeline,” Missler said.

NEWARK VILLAGE CONCERNS Residents in the nearby Newark Village neighborhood expressed disappointment with a recently completed project to improve drainage and other infrastructure.

They said the project resulted in ravine-like ditches that have created an eyesore and led to worse problems than the neighborhood experienced before.

City Councilor Jeff Worrell agreed with the residents’ assessments.

“It does not meet Carmel’s standards in my opinion,” he said. “I hate saying that, but it is true.”

PROPOSED HOTEL LACKS CITY SUPPORT Carmel City Councilors acknowledged at a June 3 town hall meeting that a private developer has proposed building a hotel to replace a parking lot and aging Park Lane apartments just west of the Carmel Clay Public Library, but they said they don’t support the plan and don’t expect it to gain traction.

Councilor Rich Taylor said he believes building a hotel next to a school is a “ridiculous location.”

“I’m completely against the project,” he said.

City Councilor Jeff Worrell said that anyone can propose a redevelopment project, but that does not mean it will occur.

“Anybody in America can try and put property under contract and can buy it, but it will not work in this case unless the developer can get support and incentives from the city,” Worrell said. “As far as I know, from talking to the mayor as well as the (Carmel) Redevelopment Commission, there is no reason for the City of Carmel to support this project.”

Capital Group announced June 4 that it will expand its operations in Carmel and add up to 200 jobs by the end of 2028.

The Los Angeles-based fund-managing firm will invest $13.5 million to expand its operations at 12811 N. Meridian St. “The Indianapolis area has been a fantastic home for Capital Group for more than 30 years, thanks to the strength of the local community and the exceptional talent in the region,” stated Ryan Rue, head of American Funds Service Group at Capital Group, in a press release.

“We’re excited to continue growing here as we invest in our people, expand our capabilities and support our clients for the long term.”

Capital Group has already begun the hiring process for additional client services and operations roles. It will close its office in Hampton Roads, Virginia, at the end of 2027 and is offering relocation services to employees transferring to Carmel.

Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam is appreciative of Capital Group’s commitment to the community.

“From their landmark solar project to the impactful work of their Capital Cares program, they are a vital part of our city’s fabric,” Finkam stated. “We are proud that a world-class firm with such a disciplined, long-term vision continues to grow and invest in our city.”

Capital Group installed 4,230 solar panels on canopies over the parking lot in 2024 at its Carmel office. The project aimed to offset approximately half of the site’s annual electrical load.

Graeter’s opens in The Farm

Graeter’s held its grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony June 3. The shop is part of The Farm at U.S. 421 and Sycamore Street near the Carmel border.

The store features a patio and indoor dining area and a menu with more than 25 ice cream flavors, sorbet, sundaes, frozen drinks, shakes, pies and cakes.

“The most unique feature (about this location) is that it’s with a plethora of really nice restaurants,” said Chip Graeter, a fourth-generation co-owner and chief of retail operations. “I don’t know if we have any stores that have that breadth of good quality eating right next door.”

Graeter attended the grand opening with his aunt, Kathy Graeter, who cut the ceremonial ribbon.

Performers having ‘Shrek’ of a time

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com For Quincy Carman, this is a perfect way to start her summer.

Carman is performing as Fiona in Civic Theatre’s Junior Civic’s musical version of “Shrek Jr.” June 19-24 at The Tarkington at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“Ever since I was little I have loved the show, so it’s very cool that I get to play one of my dream characters,” said Carman, who will be an eighth-grader at Carmel’s Creekside Middle School in the 2026-27 school year. “I think all the music is very fun and creates a good match. The message is it’s OK to be weird, be yourself, don’t judge a book by a cover. Those are the main ones.”

Carman said “I Know It’s Today” and “I Think I Got You Beat” are her two favorite songs in the show, which she saw Junior Civic perform in 2019.

This is the largest role she has had.

“Memorizing is very tricky but I’m trying my hardest,” she said.

Evan Cohen, who will be a freshman at Carmel High School in August, plays Shrek.

“Before I auditioned, I liked listening to Shrek’s solos and music from the main version,” he said. “Some songs are cut in the junior version, but I think the music is really good and pulled me into really wanting the role.”

It’s the biggest role Cohen has had, too.

“I’ve never had this many lines before, so I have to memorize a lot,” he said.

Cohen will be painted green before each performance. Carman also has to be painted green for part of the performance. Ari Yuckman, who plays the Donkey, will be a freshman at CHS. “Travel Song” is one of Cohen’s favorites because it’s from two perspectives.

“One character is singing and he is annoying Shrek, and then Shrek is singing about how annoyed he is with Donkey,” Cohen said. “I like ‘I Think I

“I Think I Got You Beat’ is a one-upmanship between Shrek and Fiona on whose life has been more difficult.

Fiona has been trapped in a tower and Shrek’s been shunned.

“That’s the song where Shrek and Fiona realize they aren’t as different as they thought they were,” director Shelby Myers said. “You start to see the kindling of a relationship. That’s the turning point in the musical.”

The cast features approximately 35 performers. Most are 14 or younger.

“There’s definitely scenes where we have everyone on the stage at the same time,” Myers said. “What’s great about this show is that there are so many opportunities for different groups of kids to have featured moments in the show. It’s such an ensemble show. It’s so much about community and togeth-

erness. Shrek’s story, in particular, is all about loneliness, what do we need from each of us as human beings.”

Myers said the message of the musical is relatable.

“The finale of the show is ‘This is Our Story,’” Myers said. “It’s about storytelling and it’s about the journeys we all go through. It’s about the assumptions we have as we go into life and how life can flip that right back around. It’s about how we are princesses and ogres at the same time. People are complex, and that’s what makes us beautiful. It’s celebrating diversity and inclusion.”

While the younger actors are performing “Shrek Jr,” Civic Theatre’s Young Artists Program will present “Revue!” at 6 and 8 p.m. June 22 at the Studio Theater at Allied Solutions Center.

Grammy-winning artist Clark set for concert

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Brandy Clark had trouble believing a New York Times panel had named her one of the 30 greatest living American songwriters.

“It was a surprise to me then, and I actually thought when they called me they were calling to interview me about someone else,” she said. “I didn’t believe I was on the list for a bit. I had my publicist double-check because it’s such a weighty list. I think the great thing about it for me is I want to spend the rest of my life proving that I deserve to be on it because it is a big honor.”

Clark will perform at 7:30 p.m. June 21 at Hendricks Live! in Plainfield. Indianapolis singer-songwriter Kara Cole will open for Clark.

Clark won a Grammy Award for Best Americana Performance for her song “Dear Insecurity,” which featured Brandi Carlile. “Dear Insecurity” won the Song of the Year from Americana Honors & Awards.

Carlile produced Clark’s self-titled album in 2023.

“I won my first Grammy on that record,” Clark said. “It was so fun to work with her and it taught me a lot. It did get me back to my roots, not just to the (Pacific) Northwest, but just of songwriting, and reminded me of why we all write songs to begin with. It got me back to that sort of place.”

When she was young, Clark’s parents enjoyed the country music of that era while her grandmother favored older country artists.

“There are a couple songs on that new album that tip their hat to that oldschool country sound,” she said. “Then there are more progressive songs.”

Clark was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Country Album for her 2013 debut album “12 Stories.” She had already been writing songs for artists such as Sheryl Crow, Miranda Lambert, Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker for several years.

Clark’s next album will come out in late July, but the first single, “American Roots,” was released June 5.

Clark will perform new songs and some favorites, such as “She Smoked in the House.”

“I love that people always want to hear that song, and ‘Hold My Hand’ is one that always has to get played,” she said.

Clark grew up next door to her maternal grandparents.

“I feel like my influences go back further than most people my age because of my grandparents,” she said.

“My parents were definitely listening to the country that was on commercial radio at that time. I’ve always felt fortunate for those influencers like Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. There were artists like Kenny Rogers on the radio when I was a kid,

so it was a good hodgepodge of music to grow up in.”

McEntire recently asked her to write a song called “Trailblazer” for McEntire, Miranda Lambert and Laney Wilson.

“That was incredible because those are three female singers and songwriters that I absolutely love,” Clark said.

“So, getting to collaborate with them was such a big deal. I’m always proud when someone covers my songs.”

Clark was joined by collaborators Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne on the Times list. She and McAnally created a pop-country score for a Broadway musical called “Shucked” in 2022.

“Shane is one of the greatest collaborations of my life,” she said. “He’s a best friend, so the work we’ve done together means a lot more because of that. We’ve gone through a lot. We’ve written hits.

We’ve had misses and we wrote a musical together. We’re turning that into a movie, so we are writing potential new songs for a musical movie. Shane’s always been my biggest cheerleader and I’ve been his.”

Academy kids head to NYC

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel’s Midwest Academy students are getting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take the stage on Broadway.

Midwest Academy, which serves students with learning differences such as ADHD, autism and language-based processing challenges, is taking 21 students to the Arts for Autism, a one-night benefit performance June 22 at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City.

Broadway performers join performing arts students from across the U.S. for the benefit. It’s the 10th anniversary of the program and Midwest’s first appearance.

Alicia McClure, a Midwest music and theater arts teacher, said the school was invited to submit a video and sent one from a “Frozen Jr.” production in 2025.

“We have a piece we take with us and do two group numbers and we have 13 Broadway performers that work with us over the weekend (June 20-21) on the group numbers,” McClure said.

The performance piece is “Everybody Rejoice” from “The Wiz,” which was an

encore song when Midwest Academy presented “The Wizard of Oz Jr.” in March.

Ethan Hurry, who played the Scarecrow in the March production and is a 2026 graduate, said he has been part of each musical production at Midwest.

“I’m a big fan of the acting,” said Hurry, a Whitestown resident. “I think it’s really cool playing a different character.”

Indianapolis resident Layla Callahan, who wlll be a junior in the 2026-27 school year, played Glinda in the school production.

“I’ve always wanted to go to New York, it’s one of my dreams,” she said.
