The City of Fishers’ annual Spark!Fishers festival June 27 included a street fair in the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater and surrounding areas and a community parade that led from Municipal Drive to 116th Street to Holland Drive, ending at Holland Park. The festival capped the celebration with fireworks. A June 26 planned concert and drone show were rescheduled to July 31 because of rain.

Area mayors and police chiefs kicked off the Regional Mayors’ Public Safety Partnership Summit June 26 with discussions about how to efficiently work together to improve public safety.

Zionsville Mayor John Stehr said between 30 and 40 people traveled from Boone and Hamilton counties for the first meeting Stehr at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis.

The summit was spearheaded by Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam and Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett following comments Finkam made Willis about Indianapolis leadership needing to do more to prevent repeat criminals. The comments came after a man, who had dozens of charges in Marion County, allegedly stole a car in Carmel before crashing it.

Finkam described the meeting as a first step that will be followed by discussions with prosecutors, judges and state legislators.

“We had a productive conversation about how we can make our region safer for our residents,” Finkam stated in a press release.

Stehr said a topic of conversation was the disconnect between crime statistics and public perception. Crime is going down, he said, though the public doesn’t think so.

“You need to tell the story and what’s really happening,” he said.

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said the meeting was a positive step forward and the first of several that will take place this year.

“I think there are maybe three more meetings between now and the end of the year,” he said. “We have different topics that we’ll be addressing in each of those, so that we can kind of chunk this out and get more in depth on each of those subjects.”

Upcoming topics include law enforcement, the judicial system, the correctional system and the legislature. While the first meeting involved

mayors and police, Fadness said future meetings can include prosecutors, judges and lawmakers.

“I think we’re pretty well informed as mayors and police chiefs about what we’re doing to try to address crime within the confines of our abilities,” he said.

The next few meetings will be more about us learning about the other aspects of the criminal justice system, and hopefully from that Finkam educational experience, we can gain some deeper insight into what some of the options are to improve.”

Westfield Mayor Scott Willis said he looks forward to finding solutions.

Fadness “It’s definitely a problem,” he said of repeat criminals. “I don’t know if I would frame it in the sense of it’s a Marion County problem — I think it’s bigger than that, quite frankly.”

Willis said one way to tackle the problem is through better information-sharing technology, so regional and statewide law enforcement can help each other.

Noblesville Deputy Mayor of Development Sarah Reed and Noblesville Police Department Captain Dennis Coffey attended the summit on behalf of the City of Noblesville. Reed said the summit reflects the strong partnership that keeps central Indiana moving forward.

“By coming together to understand crime trends and best practices better, share information and hear directly from our police department leadership about what is or is not working and the gaps that need to be filled, we’re strengthening the safety of every community in our region,” Reed said.

The group will meet three more times this year. The goal is to develop an action plan by the end of meetings.

The next meeting is set for August and will focus on understanding gaps and barriers in the legal system.

Dog park, rooftop studio on track at community center

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Membership has sold out at the notyet-opened dog park at the Fishers Community Center, and the City of Fishers plans to open the new amenity in the fall. To that end, the Board of Public Works and Safety voted June 23 for a contractor to install new sod in the field designated for the dog park.

Director of Recreation and Wellness Jake Reardon-McSoley told the board that the center has tried to get grass established by seeding the area, but that hasn’t worked out.

“It’s very important to have a really strong stand of grass before we open it to the community, and we actually have a sold-out dog park membership base,” he said. “This would be kind of pivoting and now giving the reins to our own City of Fishers DPW team and allowing them to kind of run with putting sod down and kind of doing it their way.

We would then be on track for opening, as we’ve communicated publicly, this fall.”

LLC calls for spraying the entire 92,000 square feet with weed killer to eliminate existing vegetation. After that has set for 10 days, the area would be dragged and raked to loosen the ground and remove excess material before new sod is installed. The work will include a drainage system.

The board also approved an approximately $2 million contract for a new rooftop exercise studio — part of the Fishers Community Center’s second phase of development. Reardon-McSoley said the contract is with the same team that designed and built the center before it opened last fall.

“The good news is the construction will be fully funded by surplus funding we had from the original agreement,” he said. “So, this would just be approving that design and construction, hopefully starting this fall.”

The community center’s architects are Williams Architecture and the developer was Hagerman GM Rec Center, LLC. The Fishers Community Center opened Nov. 1, 2025, after about a year and a half of construction. For more, visit FishersCommunityCenter.com.

Jessica, a survivor who keeps her last name private for safety reasons, said community members could be saving someone’s life by helping them connect to Prevail.

“It can be easy to pass judgement, but you really don’t have any idea what someone’s dealing with,” she said.

“Take time to educate yourself and show up with empathy, kindness and compassion.”

Looking ahead, the organization is focused on building partnerships.

“Partnerships are so critical and important, and 40 percent of our referrals come from law enforcement,” Wanninger said. “Building up those partnerships, whether it’s with law enforcement, the prosecutor’s office, county officials or other nonprofits, allows us to be more accessible in our community. We are exploring an opportunity with one of our local law enforcement organizations right now to have a staff member housed out of the police station, so that might be a great way for us to be more present in the community, but also help decrease overhead costs at the same time.”

“It’s about constantly assessing programmatically what those needs are,” Wanninger said. “We’ve reinstituted our domestic violence task force, and that’s where we’ve brought our law enforcement, prosecutors and other key individuals together to see how we can better respond to domestic violence situations within our community and county. We have our SART team, which is our sexual assault response team, and again, that’s individuals coming together to collaborate and educate each other about how can we do better on responding to those things as well. I think we just have to continue to educate and learn.”

USA Parkway road-widening project moving forward

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com The City of Fishers is moving forward with plans to widen USA Parkway in the Fishers District area — one of the primary roads leading to and from the Fishers Event Center and various retail, residential and restaurant developments.

An approximately $2.5 million contract with Calumet Civil Contractors was approved June 23 by the Board of Public Works and Safety. Construction will start this month, with completion expected this November, according to the city’s project dashboard.

Fishers Engineering Director Hatem Mekky told the board that the project will widen USA Parkway from USA Drive next to the former Navient building to the IKEA Way intersection.

“It takes it from a wide one-lane with a bike lane — 20 foot — takes it to 24 feet,” he said. “Hopefully, this is Phase 1 of the construction. Phase 2 is (widen-

ing) it from USA Drive all the way down to 106th Street.”

In other matters, the board approved a new, temporary four-way stop at Southeastern Parkway and Connecticut Avenue, replacing the two-way stop that currently affects only Connecticut Avenue traffic.

The city received a grant to convert that intersection to a roundabout in 2029. In the meantime, due to crash history and sight-line conditions, the four-way stop was deemed important.

Rich Bassett from the Fishers Engineering Department told the board that the switch will take a few weeks and drivers will have advance warning.

“We’re not just going to change the signs at the intersection because of Southeastern Parkway and the traffic flow and the sight lines,” he said.

“We’re actually going to put advanced warning beacon flashers for Southeastern Parkway to alert them in the changing condition and some additional visual cues, as well.”

The next Board of Public Works and Safety meeting is set for 9 a.m. July 14 at the Fishers Municipal Center.

Perfection: ’26 FHS grad never missed a school day news@currentinfishers.com When Maegan Semesky walked across the stage at graduation in May, she celebrated more than earning her diploma. The 2026 Fishers High School graduate completed her entire K-12 education without missing a single day of school.

Semesky stated that it started with a little luck and eventually became a personal challenge, according to a news release from Hamilton Southeastern Schools Corp.

“I just got lucky to never really need to miss school,” she stated. “Then it became a competition with one of my friends. Once it became a competition, neither of us wanted to miss.”

When FHS Principal Kyle Goodwin noted her perfect attendance during a senior celebration, many students were surprised to learn she had never missed a day.

“Everybody was like, ‘What?’” Semesky stated.

Semesky stated that she wasn’t immune to getting sick. Instead, she managed to avoid illnesses that would have kept her home during the school week.

“I did get sick,” she stated. “But usually it happened on Fridays, during the weekend or right before a break.”

Her perfect attendance continued through the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, including periods of virtual and hybrid learning.

Semesky stated that one of the things she will miss most about high school is seeing her friends. While at FHS, she participated in activities and clubs, such as yearbook, orchestra, National Honor Society, Key Club, French Club, Baking Club and photography.

She encouraged younger students to get involved and credited HSE Schools for helping her build connections and discover opportunities.

“I feel like HSE Schools prepared me by giving me the connections and resources I needed,” she stated. “I’ve made really good friends and my counselors helped me think about my future and what I wanted to do.”

This fall, Semesky will attend the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where she plans to major in chemistry with an emphasis in biochemistry, and pursue a minor in graphic design.

 GOP picks Nix for House District 32 run — Fishers resident Paul Nix was selected by the Hamilton County GOP as the Republican candidate for Indiana House District 32, the seat held

by Democrat Victoria Garcia Wilburn.

The county Republican Party chose Nix during a June 26 closed-door caucus.

Nix ran unsuccessfully for the seat in 2022, losing the Republican primary for the then-new seat that includes portions of Fishers, Carmel and Indianapolis. ‘Divas’ create community

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Katie Zarich discovered a passion for cycling while attending Indiana University, but following the deaths of two close cycling friends, she found herself riding less often.

“I kind of lost people to ride with because I wasn’t tapped into a cycling network,” said Zarich, an Indianapolis resident who lives in the Eagle Creek neighborhood. “For a while, cycling had some scariness for me because I had lost those people in my life.”

That was until she found the IU Health Momentum Indy Divas, a women’s cycling group.

The club meets each Thursday at Bicycle Garage Indy in Carmel before riding together in groups based on ability level. Each group is named after a female singer. The Dolly group is for beginning riders. The J.Lo group is for the elite riders.

Zarich, who is the On-Highway Communications Director for Cummins, Inc, leads the Madonna 31 group. The group typically rides at a speed of 17 to 19 mph.

The group, the first in Indiana, was inspired by a similar group in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Zarich said women from all over suburban Indianapolis ride with the Divas. One woman comes up from Columbus.

“People really value it and value the sense of community and will prioritize it in their lives,” Zarich said.

Some Divas will appear in races during the 16th annual Momentum Indy, a three-day cycling event July 10-12 in the Indianapolis Bottleworks District. The event features both competitive races and inclusive rides. Being

a Diva comes with a complimentary entry to Momentum Indy’s Honor Major Taylor Fondo, a bike ride honoring Marshall “Major” Taylor, a Black competitive cyclist from Indianapolis who was known as the World’s Fastest Man. Taylor died in 1932.

Zarich said the Divas have between 200 and 300 women.

“Our numbers have continued to grow,” she said. “Any given Thursday, probably roughly 100 or more women ride their bikes together.”

Being a Diva also means one will likely see a familiar face at other riding events, like Momentum Indy.

“I know if I show up at a different organization’s ride, I’ll see my Divas,” Zarich said. “It ensures I always have someone to ride with.”

Zarich stressed the group is open to any skill or ability level.

Area nonprofit advocates for caregivers

By Piper Bailey piper@youarecurrent.com In 2011, Geist-area resident Amanda Clark-Wahl was 29 when her fiancé, Joe Clark, was diagnosed with colon cancer — only two months before their wedding. The Clarks began sharing their journey with chemotherapy and the early stages of parenthood on their blog “Cocktails and Chemo,” a nod to their former date nights being replaced by treatments.

Clark-Wahl left her position as a broadcast journalist in Orlando, Fla., in 2014 to care for Joe, who died on Nov. 16, 2014, and their 1-year-old daughter, Mira. She turned her blog into a nonprofit two months later before moving to Indiana in 2016.

“There was something about pouring my pain into this purpose that really kept me going,” Clark-Wahl said. “It was crazy and it was hard. I look back now and think I don’t know how we’ve done it all these years, but I know that it did give me a lot of purpose during that time when I was feeling pretty lost.”

She began by sending care packages

that consisted of support resources and comfort items caregivers may not buy for themselves.

The nonprofit was renamed to Cocktails & Caregivers in 2021 and has expanded to include all caregivers no matter their loved ones’ disease or affliction. Besides care packages, the organization runs two private Facebook groups; awards one-time, needs-based grants; and hosts events.

Longtime Hendricks County resident Kaila Dickinson, Cocktails & Caregivers’ executive director, has more than 12 years of experience working for nonprofits and joined the organization in October 2025. The mission resonated with her because of her family’s experiences when her mother was a caregiver for a loved one.

“Everybody always asks about the patient, they never ask how the caregiver is doing,” Dickinson said. “I’ve seen the exact moment where someone (asked), ‘How are you holding up?’ The look on my mom’s face, and the moment of relief and appreciation of someone asking her (about herself) was crazy.”

of the Our Tribe and Keeping Caregivers Close grants that help families overcome financial barriers.

“We get the opportunity to pour back into the people that don’t get poured into,” Dickinson said. “(We get to see how) caregivers look and feel arriving versus when they leave. They’re leaving feeling more hopeful and less alone.”

Southside Indianapolis resident Amy Hatch followed the Clarks’ blog because their story resonated with her. Her husband, Bob, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2008 two weeks after the birth of their youngest daughter.

Bob completed his treatments and was in remission until 2017, when he had a recurrence. Hatch was sent an anonymous care package through Cocktails & Caregivers.

“One day, I received a package, and it literally just brought me to tears,” she said. “It’s part of an organization you don’t ever want to become a part of, but you’re so thankful and so blessed, and so understood.”

After Bob died from a glioblastoma in September 2020, Hatch received a sympathy card from the organization.

In 2024, a close friend nominated her to attend Cocktails & Caregivers’ biennial Blue Tie Gala, the organization’s largest fundraiser.

For Clark-Wahl, helping caregivers has become part of a legacy she shares with her daughter, 12-year-old Mira. “(Mira) attends the galas now,” ClarkWahl said. “Something that has been really neat to be able to show her (is) you can have a sad story, but you don’t have to be a sad story. It’s been nice to have this nonprofit to just teach her about the power of giving back and turning your pain into purpose.”

Commissioners OK security contract, funding request

accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board.  WHAT IT MEANS: The county’s health department is the second in Indiana to receive the accreditation.

Hamilton County Health Department Administrator Jason LeMaster said it has taken about two years of work, and thanked the department’s accreditation coordinator Keirsha Davis.  WHAT HAPPENED: The

commissioners approved a contract with Live Nation, which owns and operates Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville.  WHAT IT MEANS: The contract allows off-duty sheriff deputies to help provide security and other law enforcement activities at the venue.  WHAT HAPPENED: The commissioners approved a request from Hamilton County Community

Corrections for the allocation of restricted opioid settlement funds for two community corrections programs.  WHAT IT MEANS: The two programs are a participant drug testing program, estimated to cost $90,000, and the Riverview Health Medication Delivery Partnership Program, estimated to cost $330,968 for the first year, $344,322 for the second and $365,148 for the third.

Company embraces IU players

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com For Erik Braden, partnering with the national championship Indiana University football program made a lot of sense.

Last year, Fishers-based Braden Business Systems partnered with Purdue University basketball player Braden Smith, who was traded to the Indiana Pacers after he was drafted in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls.

“This year, we’re partnering with Indiana University and I’m an IU graduate myself from the Kelley School of Business,” said Erik Braden, CEO and managing partner for Braden Executive Systems. “We try to track folks that are aligned with our brand, culture and community values. We really want to give back. Last year, we had Braden Smith and we brought him down to Gleaners (Food Bank) and I think we raised over $150,000 for that cause. It’s a branding opportunity for us and helps elevate us in the community.”

Through the NIL program, Braden Executive Systems is partnering with two Indiana University football players — quarterback Josh Hoover and running back Khobie Martin, a Fishers High School graduate. They recently participated in a United Way of Central Indiana event at a summer camp in Indianapolis.

“We’re welcoming Josh with open arms to Indiana,” said Braden, whose company provides IT, cybersecurity and document solutions. “Hopefully, he can run it back with (IU) Coach (Curt) Cignetti and the crew.”

Hoover said it’s been a good opportunity to meet people.

“We had a great community event a couple weeks ago and met some kids,” he said. “I’m enjoying it and Braden is an awesome group to work with. We’re always looking for great character companies and Braden fits that mold.”

Hoover played his first three full seasons with Texas Christian University before transferring to IU. He has thrown for 9,629 yards and 71 touchdowns in his college career.

Hoover embraced his role coming into the national championship team, whose last quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, won the Heisman Trophy.

better and play for some great coaches, be around great teammates and awesome fans,” he said. “I’m excited for the challenge. Every year, you have to go out there and prove it. Obviously, Coach (Cignetti) is trying to bring in who he thinks is the best fit for the program.

I’m excited to get to be part of that and do my part for the team.”

Hoover has become a fan of Martin.

“I love the way he works,” he said.

“He’s one of the best guys in the world off the field. He’s a great character guy.

That’s our whole team — a bunch of great guys that love football.”

Martin said partnering with Braden is an amazing opportunity.

“It’s cool to come back to my community and be able to support businesses,” he said. “We had an event with kids and charity in Indianapolis, passing out ice cream. I love giving back to the community.”

Martin rushed for 506 yards and six touchdowns last season, including 42 yards against Oregon in the College Football Playoff semifinals in Atlanta.

“We had a really good season and I had a bunch of great leaders in the room to learn from,” he said. “In my first year coming in, I got to learn from Justice Ellison. He’s such a great leader.

That made me realize being in college and the program, it’s not just about football anymore.”

Last season, he learned from Hoosier runnig backs Kaelon Black and Roman Hemby, who are now in the NFL. “I want to take the lessons instilled in me to become the best player I can be,” he said. “I’m ready to showcase what I can do.”

North Central Indiana Beekeepers share sweet community

By Kaitlin Fallowfield news@youarecurrent.com Tracy Pielemeier recalled the wave of guilt she felt when she passed the beehives in her backyard.

She knew the boxes were full of honey, but it was too late in the season to harvest it. It was 2012, and, up to that point, all she knew about beekeeping was a one-day class she’d taken to get started and the two years her dad kept hives on her property.

She was sure the hives were doomed.

“So fall came, winter came, and I walked past those beehives on my way to the barn multiple times every day, going, ‘I’m a terrible person. I’ve killed them. I can’t believe I’ve killed them,’” Pielemeier said. “In the spring, they came busting out of those hives.

They were every bit alive and happy. I couldn’t believe it.”

She asked a local beekeeping business to help her harvest, and her colonies produced more than 100 pounds of the sticky-sweet nectar. When the Westfield resident reached out for community in the hobby, she found it in the Central Indiana Beekeepers Club, which meets in Holliday Park.

She found the group welcoming and knowledgeable, but the drive to Nora for meetings was becoming arduous.

When Pielemeier announced she wanted to start a beekeeping club closer to home, she was surprised to find an enthusiastic group ready to establish one with her, and in 2014, the North Central Beekeepers Club began in Hamilton County — a regional club that’s open to anyone interested in beekeeping, regardless of experience level. It has members from Westfield, Fishers, Noblesville and Carmel.

Club member and Fishers resident Dave Zbieszkowski got hooked on beekeeping about nine years ago, when a coworker showed off his rooftop hives.

“I wasn’t necessarily afraid of insects,” he said.” I grew up outdoors and I went up and checked them out one time on a roof, and I was like, ‘Wow,

that’s kind of cool.’ So, I ended up getting bees the next year, and I started going to the club meetings. The club’s a great resource. That’s really where you’re going to learn a lot and be able to talk to other people and connect with other beekeepers.”

He said the beginners’ class is particularly helpful for people who are thinking about starting their own hives, noting that most people will be bee killers before they become beekeepers.

Zbieszkowski admitted that he had his

own trials initially, but this winter, all his hives survived.

Zbieszkowski enjoys sharing his beekeeping experience and leads workshops on the topic at the Fishers AgriPark. Starting this year, he is managing three hives at the AgriPark in addition to his other hives. He’s also the 4H project leader for beekeeping and the central Indiana regional director for the statewide beekeeping organization.

their experiences through networking and presentations. In a way, the group has formed a hive of its own. What started as roughly a dozen members in 2014 has become a regular gathering of 40 to 60, who meet monthly at Cool Creek Park Nature Center.

Like others in the club, the hobby has turned into a business for Pielemeier.

When harvesting honey, she realized there was no food-grade equipment to capture honey.

“We were frustrated that there wasn’t anything clean and food-grade to bring your honey out of the hive and hold it to extract at your convenience,” she said. “The old-school method was just to pull the whole wooden box off and bring it in, but the box has no bottom, so wherever you sit it, it’s going to leak and ooze and get dirt on it and grass bits and all that.”

She now travels to events to show off her Hive Butler, a special tote designed to help store, manage and transport the boxes.

After 14 years, Pielemeier said she finds zen in beekeeping, and she sees the bees’ intelligent design as confirmation of her faith. More than that, Pielemeier said the people she has met through the hobby remind her what’s possible in a connected community.

“I have met lots of beekeepers in many, many places, and they are all universally motivated, interested, helpful, kind, and generous. I am astonished at the community,” she said.

“Beekeepers are my tribe, so I’m so thankful to have found them.”

The North Central Indiana Beekeepers Club meets at 6:30 p.m. every third Thursday of the month at the Cool Creek Nature Center in Westfield.

BAGI reports stable residential building activity news@youarecurrent.com The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis recently reported that single-family building permit activity across central Indiana remained stable through May 2026, despite continued affordability challenges and economic uncertainty in national housing markets.

The nine-county region recorded 4,290 permits year-to-date in 2026, a slight decrease compared to 4,304 permits at the same time in 2025, according to a news release.

The regional trend reflects a balanced market. Nationally, housing affordability remains a challenge, with the National Association of Home Builders reporting that prospective buyers continue to face elevated housing costs as interest rates remain high during global uncertainty.

Musical farce set for Red Barn Theatre

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Red Barn Theatre Artistic Director Michael Taylor is convinced audiences will embrace the season finale.

“It’s a newer show with a very contemporary feel that is based in the Renaissance times,” Taylor said. “It’s the story of the creation of the first musical. It’s funny. It’s a great way Taylor to end the season.”

Red Barn will present “Something Rotten!” July 9-12 and July 15-19 at the Frankfort venue.

The musical will feature a cast of 23 — the largest that Taylor has had in his 10-year tenure as artistic director.

“We’ve pulled together a cast that is very talented,” said Taylor, a Hamilton Southeastern High School graduate.

“I think people are going to really love seeing and watching this cast.”

The cast includes Noah Johnson as Nick Bottom and Ben Brickner as Nigel Bottom.

Nick is a frustrated playwright who is obsessed with Shakespeare, and Nigel is his younger brother.

“The younger brother falls in love with a Puritan girl, whose father is (against) them coming together,” Taylor said.

Kody Horrocks plays Portia, the Puritan girl. Samara Rose Shavrick portrays Nick’s wife, Beatrice.

“It’s a show I’ve seen (on Broadway) and really loved,” Taylor said. “When I’m looking for shows, I’m trying to find shows that have a nice variety or feel different. It’s very costume heavy.

When I looked at shows, I thought this is the year to do it. We have enough local talent that can fill in the ensemble.

I was able to bring in enough professional talent to fill in the leads and put together a strong cast.”

Taylor said some cast members are from area high schools.

“Some others are local but at the college level,” he said. “They are no

Taylor was directing rehearsals for “Something Rotten!” while acting in “Wait Until Dark,” which was scheduled to end July 5 “Fortunately, I don’t have any lines in the musical,” Taylor said.

Matthew Reich plays William Shakespeare, an arrogant, fictionalized version of the playwright, known as The Bard.

“The music is very clever,” Taylor said.

Red Barn Associate Artistic Director Luke McLaughlin, a Frankfort resident, portrays the soothsayer Nostradamus.

“It’s a really silly, fun part that fits right into my farcical wheelhouse,” McLaughlin said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun bringing this character and this story to life.”

Taylor has seen “Something Rotten!” on Broadway. McLaughlin saw a production in Fort Wayne several years ago.

“It has been a show I’ve brought up a number of times to Michael when we are thinking about the season,”

McLaughlin said. “The dance numbers are a ton of fun, the jokes are constant, and for those who love musical theater, there are plenty of references that audiences will recognize and enjoy.

Michael and I love a good farce, but it is always fun to do a show that can transcend that mold. Though ‘Something Rotten!’ has a ton of farcical elements, it’s a story with a lot of heart and worldly advice. I think the main characters’ struggles are relatable, and the lessons they learn along the way elevate this story into a truly special musical.”

McLaughlin said cast members range in age from the 50s to 14 years old.

“We have performers from all across the country — New York, Florida, California, Nebraska, Illinois, Colorado, Missouri and, of course, a nice mix of local talent that our audiences have come to love and recognize over the years,” McLaughlin said. “Personally, I think this is the strongest vocal and dancing ensemble we’ve ever had, and I’m super excited to see the finished product.”

The living truth?

Commentary by Terry Anker “Dead men tell no tales.” The proverb is so well known among us as to become a part of our common lexicon.

Most scholars agree that a variant was introduced by English moral and religious writer Thomas Becon in the late 1500s. Some 100 years later, the exact quote began to appear in print. By 1883’s release of Robert Louis Stevenson’s epic “Treasure Island,” protagonist Jim proclaims “Dead men don’t bite” to Isreal Hands in a swashbuckling battle scene. Eighty-four years later, Walt Disney opens his “Pirates of the Caribbean” attraction.

A ghostly gang of pirates, including Blackbeard himself, chant the expression as millions of parkgoers float past skeletons and shipwrecks. While indoor boat trips around a fictional island gave us a respite from the hot amusement park sun, it also reinforced a blunt human truth: Eliminating witnesses eliminates testimony.

Whatever they know dies with them.

By the revamp of the “Pirates” films in the 2000s, America had become

a different place, but the veracity of death as a final arbiter remained unchanged. Happily, most of us will not know lives of danger on the high seas.

Instead, we apply the adage in our own ways. If we are done listening, we might proclaim, “You are dead to me.”

We move across country, cut them out of the will and remove them from the narrative. What they were no longer exists to us.

Still, death is the most final. As our parents die, we lay unfettered claim to the past. How we define them to future generations becomes reality. A deceased progenitor never disagrees with our assessment. They don’t defend their view and they cannot correct the record. If we tell the tale of the dead men, are we truthful or mired in our own perspective, temptation and bias?

Health warning from the ‘mayo’ clinic Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Over the years, my wife Mary Ellen and I have had some basic disagreements about condiments, but here’s a product that I had not anticipated would cause dissent in my marriage: mayonnaise.

Ketchup? Sure, there were always possibilities for a tiff here. You never hear a man say to his wife, “With all that ketchup on the burger, sweetheart, you can’t possibly appreciate the fine texture and flavor of the grass-fed beef.”

Women, on the other hand, will say, “If you put ketchup on my chicken Kiev, I will rip your ruby-red tongue right out of your mouth.”

Mustard? Yes, I could make an argument for mustard. Over the years, I have tried to improve most of my wife’s cooking with a healthy dose of this condiment. What would her pork Milanese have been without mustard? Uneventful. What would her beef Bourguignon taste like without a glob of Dijon? I shudder to think. What about that sesame-encrusted salmon without a dollop of you-know-what? Yes, Mary Ellen and I have clashed over mustard.

But a fight over mayonnaise? Who would have predicted this?

It all started one morning last week when I accidentally put the mayonnaise jar in the pantry instead of putting it back in the fridge the night before.

Without hesitation, Mary Ellen tossed the jar in the garbage with this denouement, “It’s no good. We have to throw it out.” I begged to differ. Literally, begged. I just couldn’t accept the product’s ruin in just a few hours. My own mother never refrigerated mayonnaise.

It went in the pantry. My brother and sister clearly remember this. That’s why when we now reminisce about our favorite childhood sandwich, we call it the Bacon, Lettuce and Ptomaine Poisoning Sandwich (by the way, I have a master’s in English and never realized there was a silent P in that word. Thank you, spell check).

The next day, desperate for a smear on my BLT, I fished the mayonnaise out of the garbage, slathered it on my sandwich, then put the jar in the fridge.

When Mary Ellen discovered what I had done, she panicked and pointed to the container: “REFRIGERATE AFTER OPENING.” Suddenly, my eye caught an 800-number on the label, a hotline for people with emergency mayonnaise questions. I assumed it was the Turkey Hotline people who were bored with nothing to do for 11 months.

“Hello, Mayo Hotline. Can I help you?”

“Yes, I have a question about food poisoning.”

“First of all, this is the mayo hotline, not the Mayo Clinic. And, yes, I know what you’re going to ask. I get husbands all day long with this question. Yes, it’s perfectly safe. But you should throw it out, anyway. A man can’t win a mayonnaise argument.”

I didn’t tell Mary Ellen about my phone call. I wasn’t in the mood to argue.

It would have been Hellmann’s to pay.
