Mayors conclude first public safety summit

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Area mayors and police chiefs kicked off the Regional Mayors’ Public Safety Partnership Summit June 26 with discussions about how to efficiently work together to improve public safety.

Zionsville Mayor John Stehr said between 30 and 40 people traveled from Boone and Hamilton counties for the first meeting at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in downtown Stehr Indianapolis.

“I think we (all want) public safety to be as strong as it can be and partnership is the best way to achieve those goals,” he said.

The summit was Fadness spearheaded by Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam and Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett following comments Finkam made about Indianapolis leadership needing to do more to prevent repeat criminals. The comments came after a man, who had dozens of charges in Marion County, allegedly stole a car in Carmel before crashing it.

Finkam described the meeting as a first step that will be followed by discussions with prosecutors, judges and state legislators.

“We had a productive conversation about how we can make our region safer for our residents,” Finkam stated in a press release. “Great people with a wealth of experience and responsibility were working together and generating strong ideas.”

Stehr said a topic of conversation was the disconnect between crime statistics and public perception. Crime is going down, he said, though the public

doesn’t think so.

“You need to tell the story and what’s really happening,” he said.

Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said the meeting was a positive step forward and the first of several that will take place this year.

“I think there are maybe three more meetings between now and the end of the year,” he said. “We have different topics that we’ll be addressing in each of those, so that we can kind of chunk this out and get more in Finkam depth on each of those subjects.”

Upcoming topics include law enforcement, the judicial system, the correctional system and the legislature.

While the first meeting Willis involved mayors and police, Fadness said future meetings can include prosecutors, judges and lawmakers.

“I think we’re pretty well informed as mayors and police chiefs about what we’re doing to try to address crime within the confines of our abilities,” he said. “The next few meetings will be more about us learning about the other aspects of the criminal justice system, and hopefully from that educational experience, we can gain some deeper insight into what some of the options are to improve.”

Westfield Mayor Scott Willis said, he looks forward to finding solutions.

“It’s definitely a problem,” he said of repeat criminals. “I don’t know if I would frame it in the sense of it’s a Marion County problem — I think it’s bigger than that, quite frankly.”

Willis said one way to tackle the problem is through better informa-

tion-sharing technology, so regional and statewide law enforcement can help each other.

“We just want to keep our community safe, and when you have criminals with records, especially around weapons possession and violent crimes, that are roaming the streets in central Indiana, that’s a problem,” he said. “There’s no easy answer, but we have got to figure out a way.”

Noblesville Deputy Mayor of Development Sarah Reed and Noblesville Police Department Captain Dennis Coffey attended the summit on behalf of the City of Noblesville. Reed said the summit reflects the strong partnership that keeps central Indiana moving forward.

“By coming together to understand crime trends and best practices better, share information and hear directly from our police department leadership about what is or is not working and the gaps that need to be filled, we’re strengthening the safety of every community in our region,” Reed said.

“Noblesville is proud to collaborate with our neighboring cities and towns as we work toward a more coordinated, effective and proactive public safety approach for all who call central Indiana home.”

Hogsett stated the summit allows area leaders to work together to develop “creative, collaborative means to solve some of the most complex issues of our time.”

The group will meet three more times this year. The goal is to develop an action plan. The next meeting is set for August and will focus on understanding gaps and barriers in the legal system.

Roundabout coming to 116th, AAA Way

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Work to construct a long-awaited roundabout will soon begin at 116th Street and AAA Way. The intersection is expected to close for approximately three months beginning July 13. Access to businesses

in Merchants Square and surrounding areas will be maintained throughout the project.

The city announced in 2024 that it planned to begin the project that summer and complete it in the fall. City of Carmel Engineer Bradley Pease said the project timeline shifted “due to a number of issues,” including “complex

utility relocation challenges.”

“Thanks to a creative technical solution developed by the city’s engineering team, we were able to clear the final utility hurdle and move the project into construction this summer,” Pease said.

Work is expected to be complete in October.

Michele Kirby, a nurse and mother of five CCS students, will fill the District 3 seat.

Incumbent Greg Brown decided not to seek a second term.

“I’m a grandfather, and I need to look at how I spend my time at this season of my life,” Brown said. “When I was first on the board … it was nearly a full-time job. I really want to put that kind of effort in with my grandchildren.”

Kirby has served as a PTO president at Forest Dale Elementary School and Carmel Middle School and has volunteered in various other roles to support the district.

“By attending a wide range of academic, athletic and extra curricular activities throughout the district, it has allowed me to see the incredible work happening in our schools and understand the diverse experiences of our students,” Kirby said.

“These experiences have reinforced my commitment to ensuring every student in our community has access to a high quality education and resources needed to succeed.”

This marks the first school board election in which candidates may declare a party.

REFERENDUM ON BALLOT Although the three Carmel Clay Schools board of trustees races are unopposed, the Nov. 3 ballot will include another measure that will have a big impact on the district.

Last month the school board voted to advance an eight-year referendum that would generate nearly $62 million annually for CCS. The referendum rate is not to exceed 42.74 cents per $100 of assessed property value.

If approved by voters, the referendum would replace a 19-cent operating referendum and a 5-cent school safety referendum already in effect.

Carmel attorney oversees recounts

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com Carmel-based attorney Evan Norris is overseeing the recount process for three state-level elections.

Norris, a Republican Zionsville Town Council member, was chosen as recount director May 26 by the Indiana Recount Commission, a biparNorris tisan group composed of one Republican, one Democrat and Secretary of State Diego Morales. Norris is an attorney with Drewry Simmons Vornehm in Carmel. He focuses on construction litigation and law, according to his bio on the firm’s website. Norris said he’s also familiar with election law.

The races in question are Senate Districts 15 and 23 and House District 57.

As recount director, Norris must follow a series of guidelines while the State Board of Accounts and Indiana State Police conduct the official recounts. He is not involved with the actual review of ballots.

“My role is essentially overseeing the process and that it runs as efficiently, accurately and as quickly as possible,” he said.

Norris has experience with the Indiana Election Commission which is what led to him getting involved. He could not comment on the specifics of the recounts.

The Senate District 23 recount has garnered much attention. Sen. Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette) appeared to narrowly defeat Paula Copenhaver, a Donald Trump-backed challenger, in the May primary. Deery, who opposed the President’s congressional redistricting efforts last year, won by three votes, according to certified results.

The Senate District 15 was decided by 15 votes as Sen. Liz Brown (R-Fort Wayne) hung on against Darren Vogt, who filed a petition for recount.

The House District 57 recount was initiated by candidate Greg Knott. The Republican primary was called for Wes Bennett, of Plainfield. Other candidates were Rob Stiles and Tina Turner. The district includes Mooresville and parts of Plainfield and Hendricks County.

Norris is in his first term on the town council and was elected in 2023.

Commentary by Sue Wolfgang In 1976, the year our nation celebrated its bicentennial, Carmel became a city, and the government structure changed from a town council to a mayor and city council. That’s where this story begins.

I have lived in central Carmel my entire life. In 1975-76, I was a senior at Carmel High School, getting ready to celebrate with my graduating class, dubbed “The Spirit of ‘76” and marked by red, white and blue tassels.

My best friend, Sharon Ealy (Kibbe), and I were good kids. We didn’t drink or smoke. We didn’t cheat or do drugs.

We didn’t skip school. Ever. That is, until Al Pickett was to be sworn in as the very first mayor of our brand-new city.

That day in December of 1975, we both skipped school, without permission, to be part of the celebration.

Honestly, we had only to cross the street to where the public library was at that time, but we justified it with the knowledge that some of our band friends were “legally” there as part of the CHS Fife & Drum Corps. So, we believed our attendance was absolutely justified. And it was truly a privilege to witness Gov. Otis Bowen swear in the first Carmel mayor, city council, clerk-treasurer and judge.

Fast forward to 2026. Carmel is celebrating 50 years, our nation is celebrating 250 years, and that same graduating class is having its 50th reunion in September. Life has taken many turns, but Sharon and I are still best friends.

And here’s the “full circle” slant to this story. Sharon ended her employment career working as Mayor Jim Brainard’s executive assistant for nearly 14 years. I worked for Carmel for 26 years, serving my last four years as the first elected clerk after Carmel became a second-class city. We retired from the city at the same time a couple of years ago.

Seniors, coaching help Guerin Catholic win state title

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Dave Schrage spent 38 years coaching college baseball, including head coaching stints at Notre Dame, Butler and four other NCAA Division I programs.

Two years after retiring from Butler in 2022, he applied for the Guerin Catholic High School coaching position. The Noblesville resident didn’t expect to get the job after suffering a heart attack a week after applying, but he was wrong.

Schrage guided the Class 3A No. 2 Golden Eagles to their first state baseball title as they topped No. 1 Andrean 9-3 in the championship game June 19 at Victory Field in Indianapolis.

“I feel like God put me here for a purpose,” Schrage said. “I want to carry out that purpose, which is to have our players grow in their faith, learn some baseball, learn how to play for each other and enjoy the experience. It was a joy to see all the hard work the players put in come to fruition. They were a tight-knit group that cared about each other, were talented and worked hard.”

Senior right-handed pitcher Tate Troxell, who is headed to the University of Alabama, struck out 12, allowed only four hits and one earned run in six innings against Andrean.

“We knew we were capable of accomplishing what we did,” said Troxell, who finished with a 9-0 record and a 1.23 ERA. “We came out there and I think shocked everyone in that ballpark. We got out to an amazing start, scoring three in the top of the first, making my job on the mound so much easier.”

The Golden Eagles (28-3-1) scored nine runs in the first four innings.

Senior Nolan Ratcliff had two hits and tied a 3A state record with four RBIs. “Pitching with a lead gives me so much more confidence and cushion to attack hitters and get ahead early,” Troxell said.

For Troxell, it was the perfect way for the nine seniors to go out.

“It means everything to us seniors,” he said. “Most of us had started varsity all four years, and to finally accomplish this goal after coming up short before is a pretty sweet ending to our high school careers.”

Junior infielder Ben Canada said the team was motivated after losing to Jasper 5-0 in the 2025 semistate championship game.

“After losing, we all committed to each other that we would find a way back to this position since we were returning so many starters and big contributors,” Canada said.

The Golden Eagles outscored opponents 37-9 in the seven postseason games, including three shutouts.

“First and foremost, our pitching staff in the postseason was incredible,” Canada said. “Our defense has been amazing all year, and we have the offensive firepower to beat anyone. Combine those three aspects, and we had so much confidence and belief in each other to do our part.”

Canada had two hits in the title game to raise his final batting average to .382.

Canada, who has committed to Northwestern University, will be one of the key returnees.

Senior pitcher Luke Gremelspacher, who finished with a 7-0 record, was named the 3A Mental Attitude Award winner.

After a 10-year absence, the popular PBS “Antiques Roadshow” returned to Indianapolis June 1, attracting people from Chicago, Cincinnati and even Texas, in addition to area residents, including some from Carmel and Fishers.

Fishers resident Diane Turner was among the approximately 2,000 people attending the event, during which participants brought a maximum of two antiques or collectible items to be appraised by experts.

“I am bringing my husband’s greatgreat grandfather’s pocket watch, that is currently not working,” Turner said before heading into the Newfields Museum garden, where appraisal tents had been set up. “He thinks it’s just a spring.

It’s very old, obviously. It was given to his father and then it was given to him.”

She said her husband was told that his ancestor had carried it during the Civil War. Her second item was a decorative cameo made with marble and brass, stamped “Made in France” on the back.

Turner said it had belonged to her stepmother. She wasn’t sure what the value was of either item and was eager to learn more about both.

The people in line at Newfields waited cheerfully to get into the event, chatting as they carried totes and pulled carts filled with potential treasures from home. Among them were Chuck and Sandy Cowan, who drove the previous night from Chicago. Sandy said they brought her uncle Jack’s “junk,” which now counts as antiques — matching vases with stylized dragons wrapped around the bases.

“They’re antique dragon vases from Japan, I understand, because they’re three-toed,” she said. “And Uncle Jack used to have them on the mantle. He smoked Pall Mall, and (when I was) a kid he’d go behind to take a puff and blow it behind the dragons, and it looked like they were breathing fire and smoke.”

The Cowans said they were big fans of “Antiques Roadshow,” and coming to an event in person was a bucket-list item.

That was the case for many attendees, who signed up for a lottery-style drawing to get free tickets. About 20,000 peo-

Gail and Steve Castle of Carmel were in front of Turner waiting for an expert to look at their vintage Gruen wristwatch. They’d already had their horse lithograph appraised, learning it could fetch about $900. It was made by artist George Ford Morris, known for his horse paintings.

Their watch had belonged to Steve Castle’s father.

“I’m going to guess that he purchased it probably in the 1930s and it’s been repaired and cleaned and stuff through the years,” he said. “I have no idea what it’s really worth. I’ve looked them up online, but it’s really hard to tell. So, I thought, ‘OK, let’s bring that to the roadshow and see what they say.’”

Both have been longtime fans of the show and in the past tried unsuccessfully to get tickets to a live event. This time, though, they got in.

When the expert looked at Turner’s silver pocketwatch, he confirmed it was a Civil War-era model, so the backstory could be accurate. If it were properly restored, he said, the watch could be worth up to about $900, but finding someone with the parts and expertise would be challenging and expensive. As is, he told Turner it was worth between $150 and $200.

Markets reduce food miles Commentary by Anjani Dent As temperatures rise, farmers markets become Saturday morning destinations. The sun shines, the smell of baked goods lingers, and crowds form around fruit and vegetable stalls. But farmers markets do more than provide goods — they help you reduce your carbon footprint.

Multiple studies estimate that, on average, food travels 1,500 miles before reaching your plate. The produce you see at your local grocery store was likely transported across multiple states, or even countries. According to a 2022 study by Nature Food, “global food miles,” a measure of how far food travels from the point of production to a plate, are responsible for 3 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions in a single year.

But it doesn’t stop there. Trucks, planes and warehouses require refrigeration to preserve perishable goods during transportation. This process uses large amounts of electricity, contributing to further emissions. According to a 2022 study in the Journal of

Cleaner Production, refrigerated transport and storage account for 15 percent of global food related emissions.

In contrast, farmers markets align produce availability with local growing seasons, which lessens the need for storage and transportation. Cucumbers, zucchini and peppers dominate summer because they thrive in warm weather. Winter supplies root vegetables, leafy greens and winter squashes because they thrive in cool temperatures. By buying from the farmers market instead of the grocery store, you can reduce the amount of food-related carbon emissions.

Reducing food miles requires thinking globally and buying locally. The shortest distance between you and a sustainable future is the nearest farmers market.

OBITUARY With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dennis Anthony Paul, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who departed this world on June 16, 2026, at the age of 80.

Born on May 2, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan, Dennis was the cherished son of Anthony Felix Paul and Betty Jane Chase, both of whom preceded him in death.

On August 27, 1968, Dennis married the love of his life, Susan Bouchard, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, beginning a remarkable journey together that spanned nearly 58 years. Their marriage was built on love, laughter, unwavering devotion, and a shared commitment to family. Together, they raised three children: Kevin (Megan, and the late Lainie Paul), Kristopher (Andrea), and Karleigh (Alan), who were the pride and joy of their lives.

Dennis proudly served his country in the Army National Guard from 1966 to 1972.

Following his military service, he pursued a career as a hairstylist, beginning at Jacobson’s and later Leon’s, both in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. In 1983, Dennis and Susan moved to St. Clair, Michigan, where they pursued their entrepreneurial dream by opening Denis & Suzan Hair Design. For more than three decades, they owned and operated the beloved business, building lasting relationships and touching countless lives through their work, kindness, and dedication.

After retirement, Dennis and Susan relocated to Marshall, Michigan, before eventually settling in Carmel, Indiana. There, Dennis continued to enrich the lives of those around him and remained an active member of American Legion Post 155.

Nothing brought Dennis more happiness than his family, especially his cherished grandchildren: Brock, Leyton, Avery, Kallen, Trevor, and Tara. He loved following their lives

and accomplishments, taking special pride in their participation in hockey, softball, football, basketball, lacrosse, track, and gymnastics. Whether watching from the stands when he could, hearing the stories afterward, or simply sharing in their excitement, Dennis took immense pride in the people they were becoming.

Beyond family, Dennis found happiness in life’s simple pleasures.

He loved boating, camping, and spending time with family and friends. Known for his quick wit, warm smile, generous spirit, and kind heart, Dennis had a unique gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. His humor, support, and genuine love for others left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

A private ceremony will be held in his honor, respecting the family’s wishes during this time of remembrance. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hillsdale College in tribute to Dennis’s belief in the value of education, personal responsibility, and lifelong growth.

Dennis’s life was a testament to hard work, resilience, faith, and love. He believed in treating people with kindness, finding joy in everyday moments, and putting family above all else. Whether gathered around a campfire, spending a day on the water, or enjoying time with those he loved most, Dennis found happiness in the moments that mattered.

His legacy lives on through the family he cherished, the friendships he cultivated, and the many lives he touched throughout his eighty years. Though he will be profoundly missed, his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him. May we honor his life by loving generously, laughing often, and cherishing the time we share with one another.

Rest in peace, Dennis. Your work here is done, your legacy is secure, and your love will remain with us always.

Carmel High School grads win state innovation competition

The 2026 Carmel High School graduates won the STARTedUp Challenge innovation pitch state competition June 12 at Butler University. Koya and Khan’s project, Occlusense, is a device designed for use in a hospital setting to assess IV pump alarms and reduce the burden on nurses.

They have received a provisional patent for their prototype and have been collaborating with nurses at Ascension St. Vincent and engineers at Baxter to improve their product. They were awarded $25,000 in seed money for their startup and $10,000 each for their college tuition. Khan will attend Yale University to study molecular biology and women’s and gender studies. Koya is headed to Harvard University to study neuroscience.

How hormones affect vision Commentary by Dr. Kennedy Penny Most people know that hormones can influence mood and energy levels — but your eyes are surprisingly sensitive to these internal shifts as well. Throughout life, natural hormone shifts can cause noticeable changes in how your eyes feel and how well you see.

One of the most common effects comes from changes in estrogen and progesterone. These are the hormones that help regulate the moisture levels in your eyes. When their levels fluctuate — during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, perimenopause or menopause — you may notice your eyes feeling dry, irritated or unusually tired. This happens because hormone shifts can reduce tear production or change the quality of your tears, making your eyes feel gritty or strained.

Hormonal changes also can temporarily affect vision clarity. For example, during pregnancy, an increase in fluid retention can slightly alter the shape of the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye. This may cause blurry vision or make contact lenses feel uncomfortable.

Usually, these changes resolve after pregnancy, but they can be surprising if you’re not expecting them, and are important to monitor.

Thyroid hormones also play a key role in eye health. Overactive or underactive thyroid function may cause symptoms such as dry eyes, light sensitivity or puffiness around the eyes. In some severe thyroid conditions, the tissues around the eyes can swell, leading to a feeling of pressure or changes in how the eyes move.

While most hormone-related eye changes are temporary and manageable, it’s important to pay attention to anything that persists or feels unusual. If you’re noticing ongoing dryness, blurry vision or discomfort, scheduling a comprehensive eye exam can help you understand what’s going on and keep your eyes healthy and comfortable.

Those efforts were highlighted during a recent gathering at the shop’s roastery and production headquarters on Gradle Drive in Carmel. The event included a discussion on sustainability in the coffee industry from farm-level production to shop-level consumption led by Lucas

Wuestefeld, the shop’s sustainability manager, PC Campbell, its head roaster, and Brian Hensley of Finca Terrerito coffee farm, ICR’s new sustainability partner in Honduras. “(Finca Terrerito) and the coffee itself, they are kind of trailblazers in the region in terms of regenerative ag,” Wuestefeld said. “All of their practices are leading the way in a lot of ways. itself has put in a lot of work to quantify the impact they are having, even going as far as hiring biologists. The farm has bird species that have not been seen in the region before their practices.”

ICR also introduced its new garden space, which features raised vegetable beds made from reused pallet wood and burlap coffee bags. In addition, the backyard garden uses compost collected from ICR coffee grounds throughout the

winter.

“We do have intentions to partner with local compost services as time goes on,” Wuestefeld said.

The garden has six raised beds, approximately 3 feet by 12 feet, that are being used by employees to grow a variety of vegetables and fruits for the staff to enjoy.

Participants at the event received reusable GaeaStar ceramic cups, which will be available later this year as a new to-go cup alternative at the cafe. The cups are 3-D printed and are reusable and dishwasher safe.

“One of our mantras is to leave it better, whether that’s interaction with our customers or long-term business relationships with farms, or our producers around the world, we want to leave better relationships and better impact on the world around us” Wuestefeld said.

Delta partners with Habitat

By Brittney Dial Testin news@youarecurrent.com Greater Indianapolis Habitat for Humanity partnered with 100 Delta Faucet Co. employees June 22 to build the walls of a home for a seven-member family from Afghanistan that recently resettled in Indianapolis.

“This is what we call a panel build, and essentially it’s assembling the walls prior to them going to the job site,” said Jim Morris, CEO of Greater Indianapolis Habitat for Humanity. “It’s kind of like putting together a jigsaw puzzle that’s all pre-cut, and it allows the Delta Faucet employees to come out from the office, in their parking lot essentially, and help do that, help put the walls together, then we take it to the job site and raise the walls for the eventual home.”

The panel build took place at Delta Faucet Company’s headquarters in Carmel at 55 E. 111th St. The panels will be transported to the family’s new home in Devon Creek, an Indianapolis neighborhood at 46th Street and Millersville Road. The community will provide 10 affordable, three-to-four bedroom homes in Devon Creek, Greater Indianapolis Habitat for Humanity’s first neighborhood development in Marion County in

Kroger to purchase Giant Eagle

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Grocery store chain Kroger has reached an agreement to acquire food retailer Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion.

Cincinnati-based Kroger plans to spend $1.25 billion in cash and assume $400 million in outstanding liabilities to acquire Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle, according to a press release.

Giant Eagle has 197 supermarkets and 11 standalone pharmacies in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland, including Market District stores in Carmel and Westfield. It generates approximately $9 billion in annual sales.

“Giant Eagle is a well-run, high-quality regional grocer with a strong reputation for fresh products, pharmacy, private label and customer loyalty,” Kroger CEO Greg Foran stated in a press release. “We evaluated the opportunity carefully, and the strategic fit is clear.

The sale has been approved by Kroger’s board of directors but is pending regulatory approval. The transaction is expected to close in 2027.

Kroger operates more than 2,700 stores under a variety of names, including in Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield, Zionsville and Brownsburg.

Songbook has strong CHS connection

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel High School will be well-represented at the Songbook Academy.

A combined record number of seven former and current CHS students are among the 40 finalists from across the nation participating in the summer intensive program from July 11-18 at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts. The week includes Broadway performers acting as mentors and instructors.

Participating for the first time are Hannah Sevening, Ian Jones and Annabelle Kim. Krishaa Motycka, Grady Griffin and Aarthi Eswaran are all returning to Songbook Academy for the second consecutive year. This will be the third time for Sadie Cohen, who will be a senior in August.

“My attitude is similar to my attitude on Miss Indiana’s Teen week,” Cohen said. “I just need to go in and have fun. Not only because it’s something that I’ve just done my whole life, but it brings me so much joy.”

Cohen developed a deeper appreciation for jazz her first year at Songbook Academy.

“Musical theater songs are more straightforward, but with jazz there is much more freedom, you can make every single song your own,” she said.

At Songbook Academy, Cohen said participants can work with mentors and pianists to adjust the song.

All seven CHS participants were in Ambassadors, the school’s mixed show choir, last year. Motycka and Griffin also are in Select Sound, an a cappella group.

Motycka said the Great American Songbook is her favorite genre of music.

“I had an awesome experience last year,” she said. “It actually inspired me to go into jazz studies at Indiana University. I’ve always kind of appreciated that music, but I didn’t have a good understanding of jazz as a whole, like the Songbook style music. I would definitely say last year opened my eyes

to the world of jazz.”

Griffin is eager to renew connections with participants he met last year.

“I made some close connections with some people. I’m just excited to grow more because last year I feel like I grew so much,” he said.”There are so many tools and techniques that I’ll be able to use for the rest of my career.”

Griffin said he enjoyed the collaboration part in the group numbers.

“I sing a lot of pop styles but I also like jazz and musical theater, too,” said Griffin, who is headed to Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., to major in vocal performance.

Sevening will be a freshman at DePauw University, where she plans to major in psychology and theater and minor in musical theater. She said she wants to become an entertainment or environmental lawyer.

“I was really just excited for the opportunity to work with so many talented people and be able to get direction from people who are professionals in the field,” she said. “I’m hoping to work on a little more jazz because I’m so used to singing musical theater.”

Eswaran, who will be a CHS senior, said her Songbook experience broad-

ened her musical tastes.

“I used to like more of the new stuff, but I really enjoyed performing the Great American Songbook musical theater songs,” she said. “It really opened my eyes to some new genres.”

Jones, who will be a CHS junior, wants to learn more jazz songs and older Songbook tunes.

“I”m more used to the traditional musical theater songs,” he said. “I’ve been working with some Michael Bublé and songs from that genre. I’ve gotten in contact with a bunch of other people who don’t go to Carmel or don’t even live in Indiana — just getting to make those connections is already pretty awesome.”

Like Jones, Kim wants to expand her jazz knowledge.

“I feel I can grow as a performer by learning from other people who are musically talented,” Kim said. “I’ve never had experience with jazz music.

That is part of why I auditioned because I want to explore that jazz world more.”

Musical farce set for Red Barn Theatre

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Red Barn Theatre Artistic Director Michael Taylor is convinced audiences will embrace the season finale.

“It’s a newer show with a very contemporary feel that is based in the Renaissance times,” Taylor said. “It’s the story of the creation of the first musical.

It’s funny. It’s a great way to end the season.”

Red Barn will present “Something Rotten!” July 9-12 and July 15-19 at the Frankfort venue.

The musical will feature a cast of 23 — the largest that Taylor has had in his 10-year tenure as artistic director.

“We’ve pulled together a cast that is very talented,” said Taylor, a Hamilton Southeastern High School graduate.

“I think people are going to really love seeing and watching this cast.”

The cast includes Noah Johnson as Nick Bottom and Ben Brickner as Nigel Bottom.

Nick is a frustrated playwright who is obsessed with Shakespeare, and Nigel is his younger brother.

“The younger brother falls in love with a Puritan girl, whose father is (against) them coming together,” Taylor said.

Kody Horrocks plays Portia, the Puritan girl. Samara Rose Shavrick portrays Nick’s wife, Beatrice.

“It’s a show I’ve seen (on Broadway) and really loved,” Taylor said. “When I’m looking for shows, I’m trying to find shows that have a nice variety or

feel different. It’s very costume heavy.

When I looked at shows, I thought this is the year to do it. We have enough local talent that can fill in the ensemble.

I was able to bring in enough professional talent to fill in the leads and put together a strong cast.”

Taylor said some cast members are from area high schools.

“Some others are local but at the college level,” he said. “They are no longer little high school kids. They’ve matured into excellent performers.”

Taylor was directing rehearsals for “Something Rotten!” while acting in “Wait Until Dark,” which was scheduled to end July 5.

“Fortunately, I don’t have any lines in the musical,” Taylor said.

Matthew Reich plays William Shakespeare, an arrogant, fictionalized version of the playwright, known as The Bard.

“The music is very clever,” Taylor said.

Red Barn Associate Artistic Director Luke McLaughlin, a Frankfort resident, portrays the soothsayer Nostradamus.

“It’s a really silly, fun part that fits right into my farcical wheelhouse,” McLaughlin said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun bringing this character and this story to life.”

McLaughlin said cast members range in age from the 50s to 14 years old.

“Personally, I think this is the strongest vocal and dancing ensemble we’ve ever had, and I’m super excited to see the finished product,” McLaughlin said.

Pursuant to Ind. Code §5-22-17-6, Owner reserves the right to specify in the contract with the successful bidder one or both of the following: 1. 2. Early performance of the contract will result in increased compensation; Completion of the contract after the termination or designated completion date(s) will result in a deduction from the compensation.

A Performance Bond and Payment Bond with good and sufficient surety, acceptable to the Owner and Architect/Engineer, shall be required in an amount equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the Contract Price, conditioned upon the faithful performance of the Agreement. The surety of the Bonds may not be released until one (1) year after the Owner’s final settlement with the Contractor.

Retainage will be as required by Ind. Code §36-1-12 et seq. A three (3) year Maintenance Bond in an amount equal to ten percent (10%) of the Contract Price shall be required upon completion of the Project.

All out-of-state entities must have a certificate of authority to do business in the State of Indiana.

Owner reserves the right to (1) cancel this solicitation pursuant to Ind. Code §5-22-18-2 and/or (2) reject any offers, in whole or in part as specified in the solicitation when Owner determines in accordance with applicable Indiana laws including but not limited to Ind. Code §36-1-12-4, that such action is in the best interests of the Owner. Owner reserves the right to delay the opening of the Bids pursuant to Ind. Code §36-1-12-4. To the extent permitted by applicable law, the Owner reserves the right to waive any of the terms, conditions or provisions contained in this Notice to Bidders or the Bid Documents or any informality, irregularity or omission in the bid process or in any Bid which waiver is deemed in the Owner’s discretion to be to the advantage of the Owner and which does not afford any Bidder a material competitive advantage over other Bidders. The Owner shall have the right to accept any Alternates in any order or combination or accept on the basis of the Base Bid alone, unless otherwise specifically provided in the Bidding Documents and to determine the lowest responsible and responsive Bidder on the basis of the sum of the Base Bid and Alternates accepted.

Liberty, belonging and 250 years Commentary by JR Sandadi Carmel is one of the most diverse cities in Indiana. Walk through our neighborhoods, browse the Farmers Market, sit in a Carmel classroom or boardroom — and you’ll find families whose roots stretch from Mumbai to Nairobi, Lahore to Lagos, Taipei to Tehran.

That diversity didn’t happen by accident. It happened because people chose this community — and because this community, at its best, chose them back.

As America marks its 250th anniversary, I want to share about the local Hindu community and what we bring to this moment.

In Hindu tradition, the bindu is the sacred point at the center — the place where all lines of a yantra converge, where infinite diversity flows from a single source. It is, at once, the smallest mark and the most complete one.

We think of America something like that: a point of convergence where people from every corner of the world arrive carrying different traditions, different memories, different faiths — and find, beneath all of it, something shared.

The First Amendment promised that the government would neither impose nor obstruct a religion — but constitutional text and constitutional culture are different things, and the distance between them has always been the real story.

But the history is honest, not only warm. then had to fight the Supreme Court for the right to be called American. He lost that case. He didn’t leave. He spent the rest of his life teaching Americans about the tradition their courts had turned against him. There’s a particular kind of faith in a country required to do that.

In 1956, Dalip Singh Saund — a Hindu from Punjab who had once picked crops in California’s Imperial Valley — became the first Asian American elected to the U.S. Congress. The values that carried him through decades of exclusion were the same ones that made him effective in office: seva, selfless service; satya, truth; a belief in the dignity of every person he represented.

You can see those same values in Carmel today. Several years ago, when the Al Salam Foundation proposed building a mosque on Carmel’s west side and voices of opposition grew loud, Carmel showed up. The Palladium was packed to the brim — Hindu Americans, Christians, Jews, neighbors of every background — and together they made clear that this community does not turn away its own. That’s not a Hindu American story. That’s a Carmel story.

When the local synagogue was vandalized, our community stood on that sidewalk in solidarity. When a candlelight vigil was held for the victims of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Carmel’s interfaith community gathered together, shoulder to shoulder, to mourn and to affirm that an attack on any community is an attack on all of us. These aren’t gestures. They’re what seva looks like on a Tuesday night in Hamilton County.

The Carmel Interfaith Alliance brings together voices across our traditions — Hindu, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and more — not to paper over our differences but to stand together on what matters most: the dignity of every person, the freedom of every conscience. That work is the bindu in practice. Different lines, one center.
