Library brings back ‘Comic Book in a Day’

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com The arts organization Noblesville Creates, in partnership with the Hamilton East Public Library, will present the 13th annual Comic Book in a Day Challenge Jan. 16-17.

Sponsored by Moonshot Games and Citizens State Bank, the event invites creators of all ages and experience levels to create comic stories.

The event will offer virtual and in-person competitions. The in-person event will feature two divisions — a four-hour youth competition for participants 12 and younger and a seven-hour teen and adult competition for ages 13 and older.

Participants will develop an original comic from concept to completion, guided by professional artists. This year’s event will be hosted by Erik Lundorf and Victor Dandridge, comic professionals who will help contestants navigate creative roadblocks, share practical tips and foster collaboration among participants.

Dandridge was recently announced as the new deputy director for Noblesville Creates.

“Victor’s first big initiative is spearheading the event and working on finding ways to take it to the next level,” said Aili McGill, executive director of Noblesville Creates. “So, connecting us with conventions, comic bookstores and other comic professionals throughout the Midwest to emphasize how cool that day is.”

Featured artists and judges Stuart Sayger, Gavin Smith and Jackie Crofts will be on-site talking with contestants and visitors, demonstrating techniques, selling artwork and prints and reviewing submissions.

Artwork created during the competitions will be scanned and compiled into a trade-paperback style comic anthology. Every registered contestant will receive a printed copy featuring their work once production is complete.

A highlight of the evening is a Drink & Draw session with Emmy Award– winning artist Joe Wos. “It’ll be a neat experience for any adults in our network who are particularly excited about comics and either want to draw and compete themselves or want to watch other artists compete,” McGill said.

 Fly Fishing Festival set – The Heartland Fly Fishing Festival will take place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds Witham Pavilion. The event features seminars and guest speakers from Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Exhibitor booths feature guide opportunities and the latest gear, and instructors will be on site at the indoor casting pond with fly rods assembled and ready to try. A 58-year-old Fishers woman has been sentenced to 33 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to wire fraud. Theresa Szwast also was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and $2,172,679.87 in restitution.

According to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Indiana, Szwast embezzled more than $2 million from her employer, an Indianapolis-based nonprofit insurance statistical agent, over the course of 17 years. From 2008 to 2022, Szwast served as the organization’s chief executive officer, granting her access to its banking and accounting systems.

According to the news release, Szwast diverted company funds to pay personal expenses, such as credit card bills, golf equipment, wine and luxury travel — including an 11-day stay at the Four Seasons in Hawaii.

“She carried out the scheme through 13 fraudulent wire transfers to herself, averaging more than $33,000 per transaction and reaching as high as $66,000 in a single transfer,” the news release stated. “She also wrote 219 checks to herself. This theft occurred despite her annual salary of approximately $188,000.”

As part of her responsibilities, Szwast oversaw the company’s annual audits conducted by a Certified Public Accounting firm. The news release states that in 2008, she began falsifying audit

reports using the firm’s letterhead and forging a CPA’s signature. She then presented the fabricated financial statements to the Board of Directors to conceal her theft.

“Theresa Szwast’s conduct was not only criminal, but it was also profoundly greedy and selfish,” stated Tom Wheeler, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. “She betrayed the trust placed in her and created an illusion of stability for investors. Her deception forced dedicated employees to reconstruct accurate records and restore funds, disrupting their work on the core mission, all while enjoying her own lavish lifestyle. This sentence reflects the seriousness of her crimes and the lasting harm she inflicted, showing once again that those who abuse positions of trust for personal gain will be held accountable.”

FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy O’Malley stated that diverting funds for personal luxuries is a serious abuse of trust.

“The defendant chose to take funds meant to support the organization and use it for her own benefit,” he stated.

“The FBI will continue to investigate and disrupt financial fraud schemes and hold accountable those who misuse their positions.”

The FBI investigated this case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Meredith Wood. The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Walton Pratt.

Hamilton County Councilor Tim Griffin has announced his intent to seek reelection in 2026.

The Republican from Carmel was first elected to the District 1 seat, which includes most of Carmel and some of Fishers, in 2022.

“To me, there is nothing more important than making a positive impact on the community in which I live, work and raise my Griffin family,” Griffin stated.

“As I seek a second term, I will continue to listen to and advocate for the best interests of our residents.”

A 22-year member of the Carmel Fire Department, Griffin said he will keep public safety his No.1 priority for Hamilton County. In his second term, he plans to prioritize increasing mental health resources, improving infrastructure and keeping taxes low while maintaining the county’s AAA bond rating and rainy-day fund.

“Tim Griffin has a record of service and commitment to our community,” stated Mario Massillamany, chairman of the Hamilton County Republican Party. “He ensures our families, our tax dollars and our quality of life are protected. I am confident Tim will continue to be the effective leader our residents demand and deserve, and I fully support his re-election to the Hamilton County Council.”

In addition, he has been endorsed by the Hamilton County Professional Fire Fighters Local 4416, Carmel Professional Firefighters Local 4444 and Carmel FOP Lodge 185.

Griffin has called Carmel home since childhood. He and his wife, Teresa, have five daughters. As a family, they enjoy being active in their church, traveling to soccer tournaments and high school track meets and attending events around Carmel, for which Griffin often serves as the emcee.

FHS student named 2026 Lilly Scholar news@currentinfishers.com Hamilton County Community Foundation recently announced five area recipients of the 2026 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship for Hamilton County. Among them is Fishers High School senior Savannah Greenbaum.

Other recipients from Hamilton County are: • Alexandra Behringer (Carmel), Cathedral High School • Soro Dustova, Westfield High School • Breah Ellis, Westfield High School • Yasemin Yildirim, Noblesville High School In the online announcement, Greenbaum stated that she has wanted to pursue a career in medicine since she was 8 years old. “(I) aspire to one day be a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon,” she stated.

“Undergraduate and medical degrees are not only academic undertakings, but significant financial commitments. It is such an honor to be a Lilly Endowment Scholar, as I know that I can achieve this goal and be a part of a community of motivated, passionate students in Indiana.”

Each Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship provides full tuition, required fees and up to $900 per year for required books and equipment for four years of full-time undergraduate study leading to a baccalaureate degree at any eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university. Scholars also join the Lilly Scholars Network, which connects them with resources and opportunities to lead on campus and in their communities.

According to the announcement, Lilly Scholars are recognized for their community involvement, academic achievement, character and leadership.

“Our 2026 Lilly Scholars are the kind of young people who see a need and step up,” HCCF President Danielle Stiles-Polk stated. “They have shown real leadership, follow-through and a heart for service in Hamilton County.

This scholarship will open doors on their campuses, and we are excited to see how they keep learning, leading and giving back here at home.”

HCCF Board Member Tonya Hyatt, who served on the selection committee, stated that the applicant pool this year was strong.

“Our committee took a careful, multistep look at academics, recommendations, community involvement, character, leadership and interviews,” she stated. “The finalists made this a tough decision. These five recipients stood out for their consistency and the way they already make a difference for others.”

Since its inception in 1997-98, Lilly Endowment has supported the program with tuition grants totaling more than $505 million, benefiting more than 5,400 Indiana students. Two Hamilton Southeastern Schools Corp. students were recognized with the Superintendent’s Impact Award, announced during the annual Mudsock basketball game Dec. 19 at the Fishers Event Center.

According to a news release from the district, Blair Satterfield and Ellie Taylor were named the 2025 recipients of the award — now in its second year.

The award recognizes students who exemplify “Honor, Scholarship and Excellence” through leadership and service.

“The Superintendent’s Impact Award was created to recognize individuals who don’t just succeed, but who lift others through their leadership, character and commitment to excellence,” Superintendent Patrick Mapes stated.

“Blair and Ellie represent the very best of Hamilton Southeastern Schools and their impact will be felt long after their time here.”

A senior at Hamilton Southeastern High School, Satterfield is a student athlete and leader who was recently honored as the 2025 IHSAA Theresia Wynns Mental Attitude Award recipient.

A four-year varsity soccer starter and team captain, Satterfield has earned All-State, Academic All-State and the Senior SAGE Award. Beyond athletics, she has served in student government and leadership organizations and gives back through community service and

entrepreneurial efforts.

Taylor, a 2025 graduate of Hamilton Southeastern High School, earned first place nationally in Agricultural Communications Proficiency at the 98th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis. During her time at HSE, Taylor served as a chapter and district FFA officer and led the expansion of the school’s FFA media program across social media, print and in-person outreach.

Now a freshman at Purdue University, Taylor is dual majoring in Agricultural Communication and Agricultural Sales and Marketing while remaining active in campus leadership organizations.

Wildcats forward’s mental toughness provides boost

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurent.com Lawrence North High School senior basketball player Brennan Miller’s confidence and mental toughness have helped improve his game.

“I have a more hungry mentality this year,” he said.

Miller, a three-year starter, averaged 20 Miller points and 12 rebounds per game in the first six games for the Wildcats (6-0). As a junior, the 6-foot-7 forward averaged 13 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

“He has improved greatly in his overall strength, stamina, ability to score multiple ways and defense,” Lawrence North coach Chris Giffin said. “Leadership and character are huge strengths of his. He is the best possible leader and captain.”

An Indiana Junior All-Star, Miller said his goals include becoming an Indiana All-Star and top 1,000 career points.

“I’ve always been vocal but just more so,” he said. “There are teachable points for the younger guys.”

Although he typically plays power forward, Miller also occasionally plays shooting guard and small forward.

Miller was a middle hitter on Law-

rence North’s volleyball team in 2025, the first year boys volleyball was an IHSAA sport. Miller, who never played organized volleyball before last year, said he plans to play again in the spring.

“They just told me what I needed to do,” he said. “In volleyball, you have to communicate a lot. I think it helped me rebounding as far as seeing the ball and helping with my reflexes.”

Miller, who began playing basketball at age 3, played soccer when he was younger. He competed on the Wildcats’ track and field team as a freshman.

Miller has signed to continue his basketball career at NCAA Division I Southern Illinois University Edwards-

ville and plans to major in business administration.

“I had some offers from MAC (Mid-American Conference) schools, but the key that separated SIU Edwardsville was the family aspect, and they had a plan for me that I understand to really fulfill myself and grow there,” he said.

SIU Edwardsville coach Brian Barone said Miller has a variety of skills.

“He has a tremendous motor with the ability to play multiple positions,” Barone stated. “Brennan can play both inside and outside on both and will only improve on that as he develops.”

Miller’s older sister, Aerial Miller, played for Lawrence North under Giffin, who was the girls basketball coach before taking the boys job in the 2022-23 season.

Brennan Miller has written two books, “3-on-B — 3 Keys to Early Success” and “Fuel for Fire: A 30-day Prayer Journal.” The books are available on Amazon.

“A lot of kids have come up to me and read my book, and it’s inspired me to do more things outside of basketball,” he said.

A new business on 96th Street in Fishers offers an active indoor gaming experience for groups and individuals.

Activate Indianapolis, 8600 E. 96th St. in Fishers, off I-69 on the border with north Indianapolis, celebrated its grand opening Dec. 13 and is the “world’s first interactive gaming facility,” General Manager Aubaine Rutland said.

The business has 12 “micro-arenas,” each featuring a different genre of game. Each arena has up to eight different games within that genre, she said, and each game has up to 10 levels.

“There are over 100 things to do inside our hub — that’s what we call the area where all our games are located,” Rutland said. “It’s kind of an interesting concept, as far as combining technology and fitness. I think ‘Activate’ is the best name for it, because you are activating your mind and your body while you’re playing. There are some more logistical games, as well as some games that get your blood pumping. It’s great for

you’re throwing balls at screens to blow up the asteroids,” she said. “It’s a great stress reliever. It’s a lot of fun.”

Rutland said the business has been well received so far and is a fun, active indoor experience for people any time, but particularly when the weather isn’t cooperative.

“We had a group come in — I believe it was Saturday,” she said — the day it snowed about 5 inches. “They were supposed to do something outdoors that day. And they were like, ‘Yeah, we’re not doing that.’ So, they came here instead and they had a great time.”

Activate Indianapolis can host groups for birthdays and other celebrations, she said, adding that a lounge area can be used for serving cake when everyone is done playing games.

“I would really like people to know just how much fun it is, just how different it is from other entertainment centers that are around the Indianapolis and the Fishers area,” she said. “It’s really in a league of its own and it’s just a blast.”

BEYOND THE SHORTAGE Fishers doctor honored for helping reduce statewide nursing gap

By Rasha Aly news@currentinfishers.com The COVID-19 pandemic swept through in early 2020, putting a strain on hospital staff and waiting rooms across the state. Indiana already had been facing a nursing shortage, and the pandemic exacerbated the problem.

A Fishers resident decided to do something about it. Hannah Maxey drew a blueprint to help find a solution, and for that effort, Gov. Mike Braun recently awarded her the Circle of Corydon award.

“Dr. Maxey is a true champion for the entire health workforce in Indiana,” Matilde Upano, a retired nurse, wrote in a letter recommending Maxey for the award.

“She tirelessly oversees the health and well-being of the nursing workforce, champions policies that positively impact patient care and drives innovative changes that lead to improved outcomes for the community she serves.”

For 12 years until her retirement, Upano was a nurse practitioner at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health’s Pediatric Anesthesia Department.

Her words helped Maxey, 46, the founding director of the Bowen Center for Health Workforce Research & Policy, receive the Circle of Corydon award — a prestigious state award and the only one signed jointly by the state’s executive and legislative branches.

Upano worked with State Rep. Victoria Garcia Wilburn (D-Fishers) to nominate Maxey, whose work led to the Indiana Legislature approving several bills that helped close the state’s nursing-shortage gap.

The bills allowed more qualified internationally educated nurses, or IENs, to come to the state and fill those vital positions. The first was approved in 2022 and expanded pathways for IENs. Through 2023, the number of actively practicing nurses increased from about 480 to 760.

“In just two years, we saw a jump of nearly 300 … that’s a huge jump,” said Maxey, who also is an associate professor in family medicine at Indiana University’s School of Medicine.

Maxey said state licensing exists to protect the public, ensuring that only qualified people, skilled in certain professions such as nursing, are allowed to provide the service. Sometimes, though, requirements for licensing approval are redundant or outdated. She discovered that was the case with Indiana’s nursing license process.

Maxey’s research showed that the prerequisite Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools exam was unnecessary and a barrier to licensure.

She provided lawmakers with a cost-benefit analysis that provided evidence-based data supporting policy changes for IENs Maxey said she was honored to receive the award.

The mother of two said she moved to Fishers in 2003.

At the time, she worked as a dental hygienist with the Marion County Public Health Department, which included caring for marginalized communities. She used that opportunity to become fluent in Spanish.

Through her work, she became aware of how state policies impact communities and how policies vary across different states. She decided to study health policy, earning a master’s in public health and a doc-

This meant IENs who worked as registered nurses in other states could become a nurse in Indiana simply by applying for a nursing license in Indiana.

• Senate Bill 132, passed in March 2024, which allowed IENs who worked in other states to become nurses through examination.

• SB 473, passed in 2025, which allows IENs who do not yet have a Social Security number to apply for a provisional license.

torate in health policy and management — both from the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at Indiana University. She was the school’s first doctoral graduate.

Along with studying health policy and policy research, Maxey also studied epidemiology. After graduating, Maxey said IU administrators chose her to create and organize the Bowen Center in 2014. Funded by the state, the center is part of IU School of Medicine’s Department of Family Medicine and is nationally recognized for its expertise in health workforce policy research.

Upano, a four-time president of the Philippine Nurses Association, said she and others had been trying for a long time to get the Indiana State Board of Nursing to drop an extraneous licensing exam. According to the Philippine Nurses Association of America, about 60 percent of IENs arrive from the Philippines.

By 2019, though, the requirement still hadn’t been removed. That’s when Upano connected with Indiana University and reached out to Maxey for help.

Maxey researched the topic and testified in early 2020 at the International Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation, shedding light on the nursing workforce issue.

At the time, the pandemic had just started, and nursing shortages became a huge challenge for many states. Maxey said the shortage and the pandemic became the catalyst to get the new nursing workforce policy passed.

Maxey is also a sought-after international expert.

She recently traveled to Dublin, Ireland, to give a presentation on “Regulatory Champions of Workforce Data: Lessons from the U.S. and Ireland and Implications for the Global Health Workforce” with the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities.

Besides researching nursing, health policy and licensing, she analyzes data and researches policies related to: • Entry-level roles for high school graduates and others with an education up to a bachelor’s degree to support mental and behavioral health services • The current school-based mental health workforce, who the professionals are in these roles, what qualifications they have and whether there are enough staff to meet students’ needs • The types of doctors most needed to improve the health of people in communities and how graduate medical education can expand to prepare physicians for those roles ON THE COVER: Hannah Maxey of Fishers received the Circle of Corydon award for her research and advocacy work that helped bring more nurses to Indiana. FHS graduate creates 1st film

“I found this passion for filmmaking in 2017 and once the passion took off, it never left,” Kapsalis said. “I always knew whether I was 22 or 92, I would be doing film work full time.”

A 2020 Fishers High School graduate, Kapsalis is producing his debut film, “Trade Off” through his production company, Boiling Cactus Productions.

It was filmed in June 2025 during a seven-day period in Fishers, Bloomington and Muncie.

“This is the biggest and would be the first type of larger production for me and for the studio as well,” he said.

Kapsalis wrote the script and was the director and executive producer for the 80-minute film. He said he plans to finish the film by the end of February and prepare it for film festivals in the fall.

“The film is about two close friends, Ledger and Rash, who are moronic in their own sense,” he said. “They both have an investment opportunity that they are presented with. They are two very unserious characters who get themselves into very serious situations. It has that contrast of comedy and light-heartedness and then these real situations where they tense up and the audience will tense up. These guys aren’t thinking about their next move. They are just go, go, go. One of them acts more impulsively and is very persuasive.”

Kapsalis said the characters are mean to each other with a brotherly dynamic.

There are 14 actors in the film, with Christian Elijah Leighty as Ledger and Austin Veal as Rash. They are both Indianapolis residents. Kapsalis said they have both worked on different independent productions throughout Indiana.

Miles Anderson, a veteran British stage and screen actor, has the other key role.

Anderson, who has numerous film and TV credits, had roles in “La La Land” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth” with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand.

The assistant director is Ben Johnson, Kapsalis’ good friend and a Fishers High School graduate.

“The project to me is more than just about the film, it’s uplifting the arts community in Indiana,”Kapsalis said.

“We have 15 different artists creating merchandise for the film that we will sell for the film — pins, hats, stickers, as well as local artists creating our posters. We have an Indianapolis jazz band, 2LIFETAVERN, creating our score.”

Kapsalis said 80 percent of the $15,000 budget went to paying cast and crew.

ence running different independent film sets.

“Independent filmmaking is something I’m very comfortable with as well as my crew,” he said.

After graduating from FHS, Kapsalis originally planned to attend Columbia College Chicago. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to take classes at Indiana University.

“I decided that college was not the space for me to grow, so I dropped out of college after one semester at IU,” he said.

Kapsalis worked at remote jobs in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. He began living in Indianapolis in 2023 and started the production company in June 2023.

Kapsalis, whose father Dan Kapsalis won a state title as Carmel High School soccer coach in 2006, played soccer growing up and one season for FHS. He played the Frisbee game ultimate with friends during his final two years in high school.

Keeping up appearances Commentary by Terry Anker British television comedies can deliver a wry and uproarious approach to ensuring a good belly laugh. Certainly, American television takes the lead as the most important and watched by those us of seeking a weekly smile. But as anyone who giggled as “The Young Ones” fumbled through the “rebellious” punk scene of the 1980s, when Rick tried to keep order, even as he claimed to be a modern anarchist, or grinned as Mr. Humphries pushed boundaries with clever double-entendres standing behind the men’s counter in the hilarious 1970s “Are You Being Served” will tell you, the Brits may have lost an empire but not their sense of humor.

A standout in the 1990s told the story of the beleaguered Hyacinth Bucket, a decidedly working-class woman with aims of more, who confronted constant setbacks on the road to fulfilling her hopes of “Keeping Up Appearances.” Like so many of us, she discovers it is much easier to seek than to accomplish. Even as we accumulate

status, relationships, real estate, or virtually any object, the acquisition is only the beginning. Even as Mrs. Bucket’s perfectly pressed pleats and painstakingly selected biscuits were invariably overtaken by a boorish relative or unintended faux pas each week, she still marched directly into the headwind, confident that she could make her ambition a reality.

What is it that bolsters some of us to fight the fight with a seemingly endless font of energy while others are fatigued at the slightest inconvenience?

How many times have we made the bed, washed the dish, combed our hair and called our mother? If we have to pick up their shoes one more time, divorce may be required! When it comes to appearances, is the aspiration more motivating than the upkeep?

I’ll never guess what I got you for Christmas Commentary by Dick Wolfsie Every year around this time, I choose a favorite holiday column from the past 25 years and share it with my readers. This might be my all-time favorite.

It’s a true story This story begins when the UPS truck pulled up to our curb. My wife Mary Ellen and I saw the driver struggling with a huge carton the size of a big-screen TV. He maneuvered it to the front porch and left it leaning against the door. I went outside to look at it.

Labels can be misleading. Some of our credit cards are in my name, and some are in Mary Ellen’s, so when a delivery is made, we’re not sure who ordered it or who the gift is ultimately for. If the wrong person opens it, there goes the surprise meant for Christmas morning.

“It says it’s for me,” I told her. “But I have absolutely no recollection of ordering anything so big. Maybe you ordered it, Mary Ellen.”

That started the strangest conversation in our 45 years of marriage.

“Dick, I know what it is. It’s that special item I mentioned two months ago that I wanted for Christmas. You said you found it in a catalog. Don’t you remember? I’m so excited! Thank you.”

“I have absolutely no idea what it is.

Can you give me a hint?”

“No, I can’t give you a hint. That would ruin the surprise.”

“Ruin the surprise? Ruin the surprise? The gift is for you! It’s supposed to be your surprise. But you already know what it is. I’m the one who

doesn’t have a clue.”

“It doesn’t seem right to tell you.

That’s not in keeping with the spirit of giving, Dick.”

“OK, how about if you whisper softly in my ear and I promise I won’t tell you what you said.”

It scared me a little that, for a brief moment, this actually made sense. It was driving me crazy that I couldn’t remember what I bought her.

“Is it a high-tech item?” I asked.

“Not really,” she said.

“Do you plug it in?”

“No.” “Is it artwork?”

“No, not even close. But I don’t want to play anymore. If you guess it, I’ll have nothing to look forward to on Christmas morning. I want to see the expression on your face when I open it.”

Later that morning when Mary Ellen went out grocery shopping, I opened the box. Let me tell you, it was a really neat present. I don’t think I have ever been happier with something I bought my wife. Before Mary Ellen got home, I resealed it, then gift-wrapped it and placed it under the tree. Of course, now we both knew what was in the package.
