Orr expressed concern about actions of HSEA leadership and some of their supporters during the negotiations process, such as statements about the district “disrespecting” teachers. He said he hoped everyone could move forward together and “return to an apolitical foundation that made HSE exceptional for decades.”

The new contract does not include an increase to base salaries for teachers. Details published on the district website show that employee health insurance contributions are the same as a previous agreement teachers rejected in October. The new contract added new one-time health savings account contributions, and employees can stay on their current health plans through the end of February.

District administration released a statement Dec. 30, noting that this year’s negotiations “occurred amid declining enrollment, rising health insurance costs, higher employer costs related to the state teacher retirement system and the impact of SEA 1 legislation.”

Senate Enrolled Act 1 is the state’s new property tax law, which resulted in reduced revenue for local government bodies, including public schools.

“This approval brings closure to an important process and allows us to move forward together,” Superintendent Patrick Mapes stated. “We appreciate the commitment shown by everyone involved and remain focused on supporting our staff and students in the year ahead.”

COMMUNITY Trial rescheduled again in fatal crash case

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Court proceedings for Fishers teenager Trey Williams, who faces charges of felony reckless homicide, reckless driving and carrying false identification, have been rescheduled numerous times since he pleaded not guilty in early June. His trial is now set for early February.

Williams, 18, who initially was detained as a juvenile because he was 17 when the alWilliams leged crimes took place, drove one of the vehicles involved in a March 1 crash on Florida Road that killed 18-year-old Mason Alexander, a former Hamilton Southeastern High School student-athlete.

Alexander A Hamilton County magistrate ruled May 30 to waive Williams to adult court. During a hearing a few days later, Hamilton County Judge Andrew Bloch set a trial for Oct. 6.

Since then, final pretrial hearing and trial dates have changed three times.

The most recent pretrial hearing set for Dec. 31 has been rescheduled for 2:30 p.m. Jan. 21, with a jury trial now tentatively set for Feb. 9.

Alexander graduated from HSE early and was a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a cornerback on the football team. He was home for a visit and was the passenger in the defendant’s 2016 BMW. According to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, the BMW was traveling south on Florida Road from 113th Street. At the same time, a 2015 Toyota RAV-4 was headed north on Florida Road near Geist Park. The BMW tried to pass a car in front of it by entering the oncoming lane just before a hill crest.

The RAV-4 and the BMW both swerved to avoid a collision, and the BMW ended up hitting a tree and catching fire.

Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene.

Longtime deputy picked for top prosecutor role

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com Before becoming a prosecutor, Josh Kocher planned to become a biblical archaeologist. He got an undergraduate degree in the field, but ongoing tensions in the Middle East kept him from pursuing his plans.

So, he went to law school. As it turns out, the two careers aren’t all that different.

“When you take a step back and think about it, there is a pretty strong correlation between a criminal case and an archeological site, especially when you get into things like murder cases,” Kocher said. “You’re analyzing it for crime, for evidence, artifacts, and piecing together what happened.”

Kocher became Hamilton County’s prosecuting attorney Dec. 30 during a Republican Party caucus. The caucus didn’t reach a quorum, so party chair Mario Massillamany appointed Kocher — the only candidate in the running — to the role.

The position opened when county prosecutor Greg Garrison announced in early December that he would resign because of health concerns. Garrison, a former talk radio host who largely avoided media appearances during his time in office, did not respond to a request for comment.

Kocher said Garrison, who was elected in 2022, always intended to only serve a single term, although he didn’t initially plan to step down early. Approximately a year ago, Kocher launched a campaign to run for county prosecutor in the 2026 election.

Kocher, a 2006 graduate of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, joined the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office in 2006 as a deputy prosecutor. He became chief deputy prosecutor in 2023 and briefly served as interim prosecutor between Garrison’s Dec. 20 departure and the caucus.

The North Central High School graduate said he doesn’t plan to make any drastic changes to how the office is run but that there may be some “little course corrections.”

“My goal is for us to be the most professional prosecutor’s office and to continue to maintain the special place

that Hamilton County is,” he said. “It is a very safe place to live. We have a very good quality of life here. I want to keep it that way.”

In recent years, the prosecutor’s office has become more aggressive in seeking waivers to try certain juvenile cases in adult court, Kocher said. He plans to continue those efforts.

500 Festival theme: ‘Racing Through History’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com “Racing Through History” seemed to be the perfect 500 Festival theme for 2026 as two milestone events are set.

This will be the 50th running of the IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon May 2 and the 70th 500 Festival Parade May 23. The Indianapolis 500 is May 24.

“We want to honor the legacy that’s behind our milestone events and celebrate the traditions that have gone into both of those as well as the community that’s participated,” said Lindsay Labas, senior vice president of marketing and communications for the 500 Festival.

The theme was announced Jan. 6.

“We’ll start to tie that into all of the promotions that we do related to all of our programs and events that take place during the month of May,” Labas said.

The 500 Festival Parade float will feature graphics that depict the theme.

“The float always changes what it looks like based on the theme for the year,” Labas said.

The theme also celebrates initiatives like the Princess Program, Education Program and KidsFit Program.

Labas said the 500 Festival’s story is built on decades of community, collaboration and shared experiences.

“As we celebrate how far we’ve come and those who paved the way, we invite the community to be part of this historic year by participating in our events, creating new memories and continuing the story of the 500 Festival together,” Labas stated.

Classical Academy students support area food pantry

By Samantha Kupiainen news@youarecurrent.com For the third consecutive year, The Classical Academy on the border of Fishers and Indianapolis conducted a canned food drive to support White River Christian Church Food Pantry in Noblesville — collecting more than 15,000 items. The food drive takes place each December, with different “houses” competing to see who can collect the most.

The Classical Academy’s house system assigns students to one of four houses when they’re in seventh grade — similar to the house system in the “Harry Potter” books. House names are Alexandria, Antioch, Philippi and Whitby, drawing inspiration from historic cities.

“It gives them a place to belong, and you build school spirit and culture, and they compete for a House Cup every year. One of the things we do throughout the year is a canned food drive competition, which goes toward points for the House Cup,” said Nathanael Jenkins, assistant dean of the upper school at The Classical Academy. “It’s also part of why we do houses, which is living unto something greater than yourself.

That’s part of the mission of The Classical Academy.”

The first two years of the canned food drive, the school collected about 3,000 items and the competition was only for upper school students. This year, for the first time, the school included the lower school in the canned food drive competition. Combined with increased donations from the upper school, the House Canned Food Drive brought in

more than 15,000 items this year.

“Not only has adding the lower school increased our numbers, but the upper school has also doubled their giving,” Jenkins said. “It was really great to see.

Our whole school got excited and involved in this act of charity.”

Because of students’ excitement, Jenkins extended the canned food drive by a week.

At the conclusion of the two-anda-half-week canned food drive, sixth-graders won the lower school division with nearly 1,800 items donated, and Philippi won the upper school division with more than 3,000 items.

In addition to canned food, the school collected socks, feminine hygiene products and other high-need items for local charities.

Jenkins said he hopes to see student giving increase in future drives as the school continues to grow. Through the canned food drive, he hopes to teach students that it’s better to give than to receive.

“I hope they can participate in the joy of giving as a Christian school,” he said.

“I think our kids felt that excitement this year — we would have a bi-weekly chapel service and we would give an update on where all the giving was and when everyone would see their classes’ totals up on the board. There was cheering and excitement and when I decided to extend the canned food drive, the kids broke into a spontaneous round of applause.”

Senior guard develops into reliable scorer for NHS

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Noblesville High School senior guard Ally Hutchinson knew the Millers’ young team would need her to pick up her scoring.

Hutchinson, who averaged 5.3 points per game as a junior, has an average of 13.5 ppg in the first 13 games for the Hutchinson Millers (7-6).

“Ally has worked very hard to improve at becoming a consistent scoring threat for us,” Noblesville coach Donna Buckley said. “She has really made that jump this year. She has been a great leader for this young team. She has had some big moments for us, including a 31-point performance against Chatard.

We are excited to see what the rest of her senior year has in store for her and excited to see her do great things at Earlham College.”

“Going into this season, I was well aware we were losing some major points from our senior class,” she said “I wasn’t going to wait for someone else to make up those numbers. I knew it had to be me. So, I worked all summer on trying to expand my game beyond my shooting to become a threat from all levels of scoring.”

The 5-foot-10 Hutchinson said she has made the most improvement in her ability to get to the basket.

“Last year, you could say my main role was a spot-up shooter ready for kick-outs,” said Hutchinson, who averages 4.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. “This year, I’ve expanded my game to create more opportunities for myself and my teammates.”

Hutchinson said her goal was to be a leader on the court.

“Without our senior class, we were

down some incredible leaders,” she said. “I think back to my time playing with Reagan Wilson and the impact she had on me as a leader, so I stepped up to try and take that role and fit in nicely. Off the court and during practice, I think my leadership is very prominent and effective, but I could work on leading the team on the court as well as I do in practice.”

A two-year starter, Buckley said Hutchinson also played a key reserve role as a sophomore as the Millers reached the semistate championship before losing to Lake Central.

Hutchinson competed in basketball, golf and track and field growing up.

“I gave both varsity track and golf up my sophomore year when I realized basketball was my passion,” she said.

Hutchinson said academics initially drew her to Earlham.

“But the deciding factor was the relationship I built with the coach (Joe Adams),” she said. “I was never questioning the way he felt about me joining his program, and his dedication to catching every game of mine he could was impressive.”

IU HEALTH FISHERS IU Health Fishers welcomed the first baby of 2026 just after 3 a.m. on Jan. 1.

Riker Horban, the son of Taylor Malone Horban and Brian Horban, weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces and measured 21.5 inches.

“Overall, my team here was great. I loved it,” stated Taylor Horban, who was induced two days earlier.

She said she and her husband look forward to introducing Riker to their young twin girls.

Hospital stays inspire Walmart’s LEGO donation

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel resident Steven Graves and his late wife, Lorie, appreciated how much LEGO sets helped their autistic son.

Calem Graves, a 15-year-old Carmel High School sophomore, was diagnosed with autism at age 3.

“Our son has spent time at Riley (Hospital for Children) and CMN (Children’s Miracle Network) hospitals due to medical procedures and surgeries,” Graves said.

“Our son really likes LEGO (sets). We found he would always stay focused and be calm during these medical procedures. It gave him something positive to focus on. We had seen firsthand how that small moment of creativity can change a hospital stay.”

At that time in 2023, Graves worked for Walmart in the company’s return network.

“I noticed that we received LEGO sets that would come back into the return center that we couldn’t put back in the merchandise flow,” he said. “It was just damaged boxes. The (unused) LEGO sets themselves weren’t damaged. I was wondering if these sets could help other kids, too. My wife and I talked about it, and she thought it was a great idea as well. What began as a pretty simple idea turned into a bigger program.”

er of automation, said Walmart leadership recognized the value in the program, but it took time to set it up.

Graves is glad his wife knew the LEGO donation project was on target to be completed by Christmas before she died of cancer on Oct. 1, 2025, at age 50.

“It was something she was passionate about, and it was one of the last conversations we had,” Graves said.

“She was excited about it. It was nice to let her know that something we could do for other families and kids was going to happen.”

Christmas was Lorie’s favorite holiday. Her husband put up Christmas lights in August, and many of their Waterstone neighbors followed suit with their own

holiday decorations, so she could enjoy them one last time.

“As much as our community gave back to us, we want to make sure to give back to them,” Graves said.

“I’m sure there is someone from Hamilton County or Carmel that will get an opportunity to have a better stay with something as simple as a LEGO set.”

Geist Half registration open news@currentinfishers.com The City of Fishers has opened early registration for the 18th year of the Geist Half Race Series, set for Sept. 12.

The series features race distances for various levels of runners and walkers, including a family-friendly 5K; the popular 10K race; and the more challenging 13.1K half-marathon, which includes 800 feet of elevation gain.

“Each race features a waterfront course along Geist Reservoir, and all participants receive a medal, race shirt and drink ticket to redeem at the postrace party,” the city stated in a news release. “New in 2026, kids can run or walk in the 5K race for only $20, making it more economical for families to participate.”

Youth pricing will not increase throughout the registration period.

Adult registration costs increase as the date of the race approaches.

The 2025 race series attracted 2,500 participants from 26 states. It also was the site of a successful Guinness World Record bid for the fastest half-marathon in a four-person costume, when

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT Fishers celebrates opening of new White River Park

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Representatives from the City of Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern Schools gathered on a snowy December morning to celebrate the completion of the new 120-acre Fishers White River Park, which features about 2.5 miles of trails, scenic overlooks and access to the river for which it’s named.

Development work at the park, west of the intersection of Allisonville Road and 96th Street, began in February 2025 — delayed a few months because of weather — and work was completed in less than a year. The park is the result of a partnership between the city and CRG Residential, developer of the adjacent River Place mixed-use development, which donated an additional 25 acres for the park.

The completed site is a “passive” park, providing a quiet place for people to experience nature. In addition to the trails — which are a mix of paved, gravel and natural tread — development work involved adding an access road, parking, bathrooms and a kayak launch.

During the December ribbon-cutting ceremony, Fishers Director of Recreation and Wellness Jake Reardon-McSoley admitted to the group gathered that it’s a little unusual to open a park in the middle of winter.

“I would tell you, here in Fishers, this is by design as we continue to work to elevate our culture of health,” he said.

In a separate statement provided by the city, Reardon-McSoley added that Fishers embraces the outdoors throughout the year.

“This park was intentionally designed to showcase the beauty of the White River in every season,” he stated. “Whether you’re crossing the Bur Oak Bridge, exploring a trail or enjoying the views, there’s something for everyone here.”

CRG Development CEO Chris Reid recalled how the partnership with the city began.

“It started out a few years ago with Mayor (Scott Fadness),” he said. “We had an opportunity to purchase all the land here. Part of our deal with the city was to contribute this land as a developer. I’m a Fishers resident, so this place means a whole lot to me.”

Kelly Brown, water quality manager with the White River Alliance, told the group at the ceremony that the park will help protect water resources in central Indiana.

In addition to recreation and trail connectivity, Fishers White River Park will provide a space for environmental education. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department partnered with Hamilton Southeastern Schools and Friends of the White River to pilot a hands-on study experience for sixth-grade students that “brings in-class learning to life by exploring

the river by float, learning about water ecology and testing water quality,” according to the city’s news release.

At the ceremony, HSE Schools Superintendent Patrick Mapes stressed the value of the park for educational opportunities.

“We’re very fortunate this past fall that Riverside Intermediate had all their sixth-graders on the White River on a hands-on learning experience, understanding what the environment is around them — and now we have even a larger piece of land,” he said.

Fadness told the group that he had already walked the new trails with his children.

DEVELOPMENT PROCESS Before starting development and design for the new Fishers White River Park, city officials launched a community survey and hosted several open houses to understand what residents wanted.

“It was pretty clear what our community was interested in for this park — that was really an opportunity to showcase natural beauty and not necessarily create any more manicured sports fields or other amenities,” Reardon-McSoley said in a 2024 interview. “And so, that’s what we started working on for concepts and designs and really wanted to reflect the spirit of what we heard from our residents.”

He noted that the site would have been too challenging to develop for any use other than a park. The terrain is “rugged” and design work included grading to provide traffic and pedestrian access.

There are potential future plans for the park. Some residents have lobbied for a disc golf course, and students in the most recent cohort of the annual Fishers Mayor’s Youth Academy suggested adding a zip line.

“I’ll tell you, when you get back in the trails, you don’t feel like you’re in the city,” he said. “You feel like you’re in an entirely different place. That place-making is key to our overall efforts here in the City of Fishers to make this one of the best places to live in America. I hope everyone enjoys this park.”

According to the city’s news release, one key feature of the park is its direct connection to Fishers Heritage Park north of the property.

“Trail connections from the north end of Fishers White River Park lead into Heritage Park, where the new Bur Oak Bridge spans the White River and extends west to Carmel’s Hazel Landing Park, creating a seamless regional recreation link,” the news release stated.

Fadness stated that this investment reflects the city’s commitment to creating a connected system of parks and trails and provide access to outdoor activities no matter the weather.

“Fishers White River Park expands access to the White River and creates new opportunities for residents and students to explore, stay active and connect with nature year-round,” he stated. “Today is the realization of a commitment we shared with the community to prioritize our natural environment.”

Funding for Fishers White River Park came from two grants: $4.7 million through then-Gov. Eric Holcomb’s Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative, also called READI grants; and an additional $1 million from the Office of the Hamilton County Commissioners to support park and infrastructure development.

The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis reported in late December 2025 that single-family building permit activity across central Indiana remained stable through November, with total permits year-to-date remaining closely aligned to 2024 levels.

According to an announcement from BAGI, the region recorded 9,356 permits for the year through November, compared to 9,378 during the same period last year — a marginal year-overyear difference that reflects a stable market.

“Central Indiana’s housing market is transitioning into a more cautious phase,” stated BAGI CEO Chris Hancock. “Builders are responding to economic conditions with discipline, scaling production appropriately, staying aligned with local demand and prioritizing long term market stability as we move (into) 2026.”

In November 2025, Hamilton County led the field in new home permits, totaling 172. Marion County followed with 125, Hendricks County had 85 and Boone County totaled 53.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, national single-family permits and housing starts have declined yearover-year in recent months, while analysis from the National Association of Home Builders shows builders across the nation continuing to pull back amid higher financing costs, slower buyer traffic and ongoing economic uncertainty.

“While national markets have experienced sharper pullbacks, central Indiana has remained comparatively steady on a year-to-date basis,” Hancock stated. “Population growth and relative affordability compared to larger metropolitan areas continue to support baseline housing demand in our region.”

Teresa Reynolds and the Slicktones set for Local Mix Music Series

“My dad was always spinning his deep collection of jazz records, but MTV was also taking over the mainstream and exposing me to all kinds of genres and artists,” she said. “My eclectic taste definitely shows up in my music, which I describe as a blend of ‘90s pop R&B, with jazz, soul and disco.”

Reynolds will bring her unique brand of music to The Tarkington in the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Reynolds and the Slicktones, who are making their Allied Solutions Center debut, will participate in the Local Mix Music Series at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22.

“We play mostly in Indianapolis, so I think this is a great chance to play for some folks that maybe haven’t gotten to see us yet,” she said. “There’s something for everyone with the Slicktones, so Carmel audiences are in for a treat.”

Reynolds formed the Slicktones in 2021.

“We’re like a family at this point,” she said. “When I formed this group, I knew that Mina Keohane, my pianist, and Poncho Hedrick, my bassist, had to be part of it. I’d been fans and friends of theirs for a while, then we added Matthew Dupree on drums and vocals and Joshua Ginder on guitar, and I knew we had stumbled onto something really special. For our upcoming show at The Tarkington, we’ll have some special guests joining us, with Fred Miller on guitar, Melissa Gallant on harp, D’yshe Mansfield singing background vocals and Shannon Kaminski tap dancing.”

The group has performed in venues such as The Mousetrap and Jazz Kitchen and played at festivals and parks concert series.

School in 1999. After graduating from Ball State University, she moved to New York City to pursue theater.

“I had just gotten a degree in acting from BSU, so when I arrived in the city, I hit the ground running,” she said. “I was cast in a show, ‘Platanos and Collard Greens,’ which was featured in the New York Times and became the longest-running off-Broadway show starring a minority cast.

Later, I wrote, produced and directed theater and sketch comedy, but then music fell into my lap.”

During her 14 years in NYC, she performed regularly with David Ippolito, known as That Guitar Man, who played weekly concerts in Central Park.

“The New York Times called him the most famous person you’ve never heard of,” Reynolds said. “He could be playing for a few hundred people to a 1,000. I started singing with him in

2009 and performed with him until I left.”

Reynolds also traveled and sang backing vocals for Gloria Gaynor for four years starting in 2014.

“Performing with Gloria Gaynor was incredible,” Reynolds said. “One of my first gigs with her was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in front of 10,000 people, and I was pinching myself the whole time. Sharing the stage with her, Chaka Khan and Nile Rodgers on New Year’s Eve in Dubai was one of the greatest thrills of my life.”

Reynolds returned to Indianapolis in 2018.

“After being in Indianapolis for several years, I’ve finally gotten back into theater again with the Indianapolis Black Theatre Co. and just wrote a solo musical, ‘Facing It Face to Face with Dollface,’ which will be performed as part of the Black Solo Festival at the end of the month at the District Theatre in Indianapolis,” she said.

Reynolds writes original songs for her band. Her brother, TJ Reynolds, helps with production.

HSEA is teachers Editor, At (the Dec. 30 Hamilton Southeastern Schools Board of Trustees) ratification meeting, board member Ben Orr used his vote to voice concerns against HSEA. He claims to be “mindful of extraordinary challenges that our teachers face each day” and claims to have “sincere respect and unwavering support” for teachers.

Directly after that, he used the remainder of his statement to denigrate HSEA, dismissing their concerns through (unfair labor practice filings) and bargaining, and talking down about everything the union has stood for.

Mr. Orr, who do you think the union is composed of? It may well surprise you that the union, HSEA, is teachers. The president is a teacher. The vice president is a teacher.

The entire bargaining staff is teachers, including some of the most amazing teachers my children have ever come across. The attempt at mansplaining falls flat when the organization you are attempting to tear down is made up of our teachers.

Do you have integrity?

True support of teachers does not look or sound like this. True respect and unwavering support is louder from the onset, holds administration to account on behalf of teachers and takes opportunities to applaud staff, not tear them down.

It is unfortunate that, on top of this, Mr. Orr seems to misunderstand the most fundamental elements of this contract — pay scale. He routinely mentioned having the highest in Hamilton County. I suppose that’s correct, for exactly two years. After that, Carmel offers larger raises and compound pay. After seven years, Noblesville passes HSE and Westfield keeps pace. We are not the best anything. We aren’t even in the middle. Our wage growth becomes the slowest.

I would hope, if he truly respects teachers, Mr. Orr understands that teachers don’t take jobs based on starting salary. They take it for longterm potential, including benefits, and, believe it or not, the reputation the district has for the treatment of its staff.

Editor, Integrity can be defined as a life revealed. It is more than being honest. It defines you in a way that needs no further explanation or performance.

As a society, have we stopped expecting integrity of ourselves and leaders? Do we question motives of those who show goodness?

Integrity can be measured by the connection or disconnect of our words from the life we actually live. If our words are distant from our deeds, then trust collapses.

Jesus spoke clearly that life cannot be divided into what one does at home, at work and in public.

While we might call it being complex, it is really hypocrisy. Do we use God when he is convenient to be used as a prop for a particular policy? Do those who proclaim God is on their side follow his

commands to be truthful, merciful and humble? If not, then what we hear is not faith, but manipulation. Maybe this is what Christian nationalism really is — an effort to control and manipulate.

We often hear that integrity is being the same person when no one is watching. Will being honest, decent and truthful cost you approval with your friends and neighbors or perhaps an election? Are our current leaders and those running for office showing integrity?

The life you lead reveals how you treat others and that defines the real you. Talent may impress, words may persuade and money may dazzle our dreams. But integrity is lasting … this is truly what our society needs now and forever.
