Council celebrates 50 years since 1st meeting

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel City Council Jan. 5 celebrated the 50th anniversary of its first meeting.

During the regularly scheduled meeting, the council recognized members of the first Carmel City Council: David Coots, Walter Dean, Minnie Doane, James Garretson, Stan Meacham, Jane Reiman and Fred Swift. The surviving members of the first council — Coots, Garretson, Reiman and Swift — attended and received a token of appreciation from Mayor Sue Finkam.

City Council President Matt Snyder thanked the original council members for their work laying the foundation of the city.

“These people didn’t witness history,” Snyder said. “They made it.”

Later in the meeting, the council unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the original city council members.

Carmel’s journey to becoming a city began in 1974 when residents voted in a referendum to transition the municipality from a town. The first city election was in 1975, and the newly elected councilors took their oath of office on Jan. 5, 1976.

Carmel plans to continue celebrating its 50th anniversary as a city with several other events and recognitions throughout the year.

Indy woman briefly escapes CPD custody

Wills continued to resist and attempted to pull herself into the driver’s seat of the police vehicle before fleeing on foot into a nearby restaurant, Songbird Social House. She was detained again with the assistance of off-duty officers at the scene.

Police transported Wills to a hospital, where she was treated and released.

Investigators worked with jail staff to confirm Wills’ real identity and discovered she had numerous active warrants in Indiana and other states.

Hamilton County charges include organized theft, escape, resisting law enforcement, identity deception, auto theft, possession of marijuana and disorderly conduct.

An initial hearing in the case was set for Jan. 8.

Paperwork has been filed to extradite Wills to Kentucky to face unrelated charges there.

Speakeasy plan advances, townhomes vote split

By Ann Marie Shambaugh AnnMarie@youarecurrent.com The Carmel Plan Commission’s Committee of the Whole met Jan. 6 to review proposals for a new speakeasy, a townhome development and an expansion of an assisted living facility.

The full plan commission will vote on the three projects at a future meeting.

SPEAKEASY APPROVED WITH CONDITIONS The Moher Speakeasy is proposed as a second tenant in the Boneyard building at 904 W. Main St., a site that previously housed Scott Pools and Bergman Automotive.

Two years ago, local restaurateur Kevin Paul announced plans to open The Boneyard Bar & Restaurant, but construction is yet to begin. The Moher Speakeasy is proposed on the west side of the building, along with a 12-foot expansion to accommodate it.

The expansion would lead to a oneway traffic pattern on the west side of the building, meaning a vehicular exit point must be added on the north side of the site. That would take drivers through property owned by The Signature, an adjacent development.

Paul said he is in discussions with owners of The Signature about the requested exit point. He said if they don’t approve it, the building expansion would be eliminated or reduced.

The committee members gave a positive recommendation to the plans, pending an agreement from The Signature owners regarding the exit point.

COMMITTEE SPLIT ON TOWNHOMES

The six committee members at the meeting were evenly split on whether to give a positive recommendation for a plan to rezone 4.4 acres to accommo-

date 27 townhomes on the east side of Illinois Street.

The proposed development by Pulte Homes is between Forte Sports Medicine and Orthopedics to the north and a plastic surgery center and insurance building to the south. Pulte Homes is petitioning for the site to be rezoned from Meridian Corridor to a planned unit development, meaning development standards would be specific to the project.

Commissioner Adam Campagna said he felt the proposal seems “forced.”

“There is no other residential for sale units along the 31 corridor in Carmel,” Campagna said. “This seems it’s being pushed into something not suited for this type of development.”

Commissioner Dubbie Buckler said she typically is not supportive of high-density development, but in this case it makes sense.

“I think this is a good use,” she said.

“It addresses the housing need we have in Carmel and is located in a place it’s not going to be visually unappealing to people around it.”

The committee voted to return the proposal to the full plan commission without a recommendation.

RESTORACY EXPANSION GETS POSITIVE RECOMMENDATION The committee voted to give a positive recommendation to amend a PUD to allow the Restoracy of Carmel assisted living facility to add two buildings.

The facility operates six cottage-style homes on 4.76 acres on City Center Drive. It plans to add two more on 1.8 acres east of the existing site.

The new homes would house up to 12 people in both buildings. They would be designed in a similar style to the existing homes.

CHS grad’s football posters track IU games since 2009

As an Indiana University senior, Jon Terzini saw a notice from the athletics department about designing posters for the football program.

“I thought, ‘You know what? I could do that and make some beer money,’” Terzini said. “I submitted a trial piece, and they loved it and said, ‘The job is yours if you want it.’”

The 2004 Carmel High School graduate has been creating posters for every football game since 2009. The work has progressed beyond beer money.

“There are some perks with it, but it’s not paying my bills by any means,” he said. “I love doing it all the same.”

With the No. 1-ranked Hoosiers’ memorable season, the red and white posters have drawn a lot more attention.

“I don’t think a lot of people knew they existed before the last two years, because they really didn’t follow the program,” he said. “It’s been a fun memorabilia for people to collect. I’ve gotten emails from people saying, ‘I’ve collected all the posters in my basement.’ They send me pictures with the entire wall taken up by these posters.

It’s super fun to see that.”

The free posters are delivered at various businesses and spots in Bloomington before each game.

Prior to the College Football Playoff national semifinals in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta Jan. 9, Terzini was working on a potential national championship poster.

Although he lives in Nashville, Tenn., the 40-year-old Terzini is an IU football season ticket holder.

“I’ve been through a lot of rough years as an IU football fan, as most have,” he said. “If you watched them before these last two years you realized that they have been mostly bottom feeders in the football department. So, this season, specifically, means a lot, because after last season (11-2) people weren’t sure if it was going to be just like a one-off fluke. No one expects them to be doing it again, and here we are doing it again. It’s been amazing to see them continue that success.”

Terzini attended Rochester Institute of Technology for photography but then transferred to IU after one year and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design. He runs an apparel design business called HomeTown Riot.

CHS band members march in Rose Bowl parade

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com The Carmel High School Marching Greyhounds will perform in the Tournament of Roses Parade in 2027. The annual event is followed by the Rose Bowl college football game.

Eight students, including five who return next year, got a taste of that experience by participating in the Rose Parade Jan. 1 in Pasadena, Calif., as members of the Bands of America Honor Band.

The honor band was under the direction of Richard Saucedo, retired CHS band director. The band members were selected by Music for All. For junior trumpet player Connor Sudduth, who plans to major in music education, performing under Saucedo’s direction was special.

“Carmel has such a strong tradition of excellence, and Mr. Saucedo brings a lot of energy and passion to rehearsal,” Sudduth said. “It’s inspiring to learn from someone who has had such a big impact on our program.”

The honor band was chosen from schools from across the U.S. The students spent the week rehearsing, performing at the Tournament of Roses Bandfest and preparing for the parade.

The parade was held in a steady rain,

but Sudduth said that didn’t dampen the mood.

“Once you’re out there, none of that really matters,” he said. “You’re focused on the music, the people around you and being part of something much bigger than yourself.”

The CHS students were able to interact with bands from across the U.S., including the Brownsburg High School band, and international ensembles.

“One of the best parts was getting to meet members from other programs,” Sudduth said. “It takes a lot of work to get there, so even though everyone came from different places, there was a shared sense of achievement.”

Along with Sudduth, the CHS students participating were Ansley Thornton (trumpet), Jack Auer (baritone), Ike Dwyer (baritone), Dominic Abbey (tuba), Madison Brown (tuba), Jack Yates (tenor saxophone) and Lizzy Abbey (color guard).

Dominic Abbey, Auer and Thornton are seniors. Yates and Dwyer are juniors and Lizzy Abbey is a sophomore.

“It was impressive to see what the Honor Band was able to accomplish in just five days together,” Sudduth said.

“It makes me really excited to perform with our Carmel program after spending an entire season working together.”

Hospital stays inspire Walmart’s LEGO donation

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Carmel resident Steven Graves and his late wife, Lorie, appreciated how much LEGO sets helped their autistic son.

Calem Graves, a 15-year-old Carmel High School sophomore, was diagnosed with autism at age 3.

“Our son has spent time at Riley (Hospital for Children) and CMN (Children’s Miracle Network) hospitals due to medical procedures and surgeries,” Graves said.

“Our son really likes LEGO (sets). We found he would always stay focused and be calm during these medical procedures. It gave him something positive to focus on. We had seen firsthand how that small moment of creativity can change a hospital stay.”

At that time in 2023, Graves worked for Walmart in the company’s return network.

“I noticed that we received LEGO sets that would come back into the return center that we couldn’t put back in the merchandise flow,” he said. “It was just damaged boxes. The (unused) LEGO sets themselves weren’t damaged. I was wondering if these sets could help other kids, too. My wife and I talked about it, and she thought it was a great idea as well. What began as a pretty simple idea turned into a bigger program.”

Walmart recently donated 173 pallets of LEGO sets to Riley and 49 other Children’s Miracle Network hospitals across the U.S. Graves, who is now a senior manag-

er of automation, said Walmart leadership recognized the value in the program, but it took time to set it up.

Graves is glad his wife knew the LEGO donation project was on target to be completed by Christmas before she died of cancer on Oct. 1, 2025, at age 50.

“It was something she was passionate about, and it was one of the last conversations we had,” Graves said.

“She was excited about it. It was nice to let her know that something we could do for other families and kids was going to happen.”

Christmas was Lorie’s favorite holiday. Her husband put up Christmas lights in August, and many of their Waterstone neighbors followed suit with their own

holiday decorations, so she could enjoy them one last time.

“As much as our community gave back to us, we want to make sure to give back to them,” Graves said.

“I’m sure there is someone from Hamilton County or Carmel that will get an opportunity to have a better stay with something as simple as a LEGO set.”

Senior guard develops into reliable scorer for NHS

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Noblesville High School senior guard Ally Hutchinson knew the Millers’ young team would need her to pick up her scoring.

Hutchinson, who averaged 5.3 points per game as a junior, has an average of 13.5 ppg in the first 13 games for the Hutchinson Millers (7-6).

“Ally has worked very hard to improve at becoming a consistent scoring threat for us,” Noblesville coach Donna Buckley said. “She has really made that jump this year. She has been a great leader for this young team. She has had some big moments for us, including a 31-point performance against Chatard.

We are excited to see what the rest of her senior year has in store for her and excited to see her do great things at Earlham College.”

“Going into this season, I was well aware we were losing some major points from our senior class,” she said “I wasn’t going to wait for someone else to make up those numbers. I knew it had to be me. So, I worked all summer on trying to expand my game beyond my shooting to become a threat from all levels of scoring.”

The 5-foot-10 Hutchinson said she has made the most improvement in her ability to get to the basket.

“Last year, you could say my main role was a spot-up shooter ready for kick-outs,” said Hutchinson, who averages 4.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. “This year, I’ve expanded my game to create more opportunities for myself and my teammates.”

Hutchinson said her goal was to be a leader on the court.

“Without our senior class, we were

down some incredible leaders,” she said. “I think back to my time playing with Reagan Wilson and the impact she had on me as a leader, so I stepped up to try and take that role and fit in nicely. Off the court and during practice, I think my leadership is very prominent and effective, but I could work on leading the team on the court as well as I do in practice.”

A two-year starter, Buckley said Hutchinson also played a key reserve role as a sophomore as the Millers reached the semistate championship before losing to Lake Central.

Hutchinson competed in basketball, golf and track and field growing up.

“I gave both varsity track and golf up my sophomore year when I realized basketball was my passion,” she said.

Hutchinson said academics initially drew her to Earlham.

Ice fest, winter games to return

The Festival of Ice, featuring ice carvers from Indiana and beyond, is set for Jan. 16 and 17. From 4 to 8 p.m. the first day of the event, the ice carvers will spread throughout the Arts & Design District to showcase their skills.

The following day, they will be at Carter Green from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to create ice sculptures. People’s Choice voting will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In addition, visitors can warm up Jan. 17 by taste testing and voting on their favorite chili from several Carmel Fire Department crews.

The Carmel Winter Games will feature friendly competition Jan. 24 at the Ice at Carter Green. Events include human curling on inner tubes, an ice trike relay and human hungry hippos.

Earth Day Art Contest returns Commentary by Cindy Muse The Carmel Green Initiative Earth Day Art Contest is accepting entries from local students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

The contest is free to enter. Entries are due by 5 p.m. Feb. 11.

Art education plays a significant role in a child’s development, according to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. More broadly, it fosters economic development and sustainability where we live. The City of Carmel has a long-standing commitment to the arts and uses it as an influential economic tool, as well as to engage and inspire our community and visitors.

Since 2010, Carmel Green Initiative has engaged more than 5,400 students in its Earth Day Art Contest, which asks participants to design a postcard-size illustration of environmentally friendly ideas.

By asking children to draw solutions — ranging from picking up litter to installing solar panels — the contest helps students visualize abstract environmental issues.

Students create art addressing simple solutions such as turning off lights, using native plants and trees, walking, biking and picking up litter. Others demonstrate bigger ideas such as solar in schools, the need to protect our earth

and what happens if we do not.

Phillips July 30, 1948 — December 23, 2025 Carmel, IN In Loving Memory of Sherry Cole Phillips It is with deep love and sadness that we announce the passing of Sherry Cole Phillips of Carmel, Indiana, on December 23, 2025, at the age of 77. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, adoring grandmother, cherished friend, and a woman whose heart and faith touched everyone she met.

Sherry leaves behind her devoted husband, David, of 56 years. She was the beloved mother and best friend to her two daughters, Marie (Zach) Cain and Bonnie Lynn Ehman; grandchildren, Julia Cain, Claire Cain, Jude Ehman, Witt Ehman and Bear Ehman. She is preceded in death by her parents, Philip “Pete” and Roselyn (Foxx) Cole.

A proud Jackson, Tennessee, native, Sherry graduated from Jackson High School in 1966, dazzling crowds as the Feature Twirler in the marching band and as First Runner-Up in the 1965 Miss Jackson Pageant, going on to marry her high school sweetheart, David, on July 26, 1969. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Lambuth College and specialized in Hematology. Her career took her from medical laboratories in Little Rock and Boston to a research scientist position at Roche Diagnostics in Indianapolis, but her true gift was the way she enriched the lives of those around her, in each city her family called home.

To all that knew her, Sherry was a source of sincere warmth, gentle wisdom and hospitality. She brought joy and laughter into every gathering, and made friends feel like family. She tended her beautiful gardens with care, delighted in walks on the beach collecting seashells, always looked forward to lunches with her neighborhood “sisters” and cherished quiet moments with her grandchildren. She embraced life’s adventures, traveling to the Caribbean, Europe, and across the U.S., always sharing her love, stories and playful spirit with those she cared for.

Above all else, Sherry was a woman who loved deeply and authentically. Sherry lived by the golden rule and embodied the love of Christ. Her life was a testament to purpose, grace, and a heart fully open to love. Sherry’s legacy is one of faith, devotion, unconditional love and Southern charm. She made everyone feel seen, valued, and cherished, and those who knew her will carry her spirit in their hearts forever.

Her funeral service were held at Carmel United Methodist Church, Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

’26 500 Festival theme: ‘Racing Through History’ “Racing Through History” seemed to be the perfect 500 Festival theme for 2026 as two milestone events are set.

This will be the 50th running of the IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon May 2 and the 70th 500 Festival Parade May 23. The Indianapolis 500 is May 24.

“We want to honor the legacy that’s behind our milestone events and celebrate the traditions that have gone into both of those as well as the community that’s participated,” said Lindsay Labas, senior vice president of marketing and communications for the 500 Festival.

The theme was announced Jan. 6.

“We’ll start to tie that into all of the promotions that we do related to all of our programs and events that take place during the month of May,” Labas said.

The 500 Festival Parade float will feature graphics that depict the theme.

“The float always changes what it looks like based on the theme for the year,” Labas said.

The theme also celebrates initiatives like the Princess Program, Education Program and KidsFit Program.

Former Conseco executive remembered for generosity

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Longtime Zionsville resident, businessman and civic leader Rollie Dick, 94, died Jan. 3. The former Conseco executive, Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame inductee, arts supporter and nonprofit volunteer is survived by his wife, Cheri, and many other family members.

Dick, who resided in Zionsville since the early 1970s, was originally from Sanborn, Iowa, and earned an associate degree from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1950.

He started his career as a certified public accountant, becoming an executive with Conesco, a financial services company now called CNO Financial Group; and later was a consultant at MH Equity Investors. He also previously partnered with Donald Trump on the 1998 purchase of the General Motors Building in New York City, which they sold in 2003.

Dick told Current in a 2013 interview that he grew up “dirt poor,” which taught him the value of giving his time.

In his 20s, he volunteered with a community theater organization and said the experience started him on the path to becoming a regular supporter of the performing arts, as well as supporting educational opportunities for disadvantaged communities. He was founding board chair of the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel.

“You should become involved with organizations you have a passion for,” Dick said in that interview, “There are very few organizations that I write a check to where I don’t have some involvement. It’s not just the joy in writing the check but seeing the good that’s done with it.”

In 2021, Dick was honored at the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel for his support of a renovation project there. His portrait hangs in the Palladium’s Founders Club hospitality space. Cheri Dick is the former executive director of the Allied Solutions Center’s Civic Theater.

Jeffrey McDermott, president and CEO of the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts, stated in a Jan. 4 message to center board members that Dick also was a member of the Great

American Songbook Foundation’s Board of Directors, serving in various leadership roles. He was unanimously elected by both boards to serve as a legacy member.

“Neither of our organizations would be where we are today if not for the wisdom, guidance and generous support of Rollie Dick,” McDermott stated. “He was a wonderful colleague and friend who lived a long and remarkable life.

He will be greatly missed.”

Former Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard worked closely with Dick on bringing the Center to Carmel. Brainard said he wanted an anchor for downtown Carmel that focused on the arts, and Dick was a key player in making that project a reality.

“Rollie stepped up and joined the board and became chair of the board and really built the board into an organization that could manage what today is almost a $400 million asset,” Brainard said. “Rollie was absolutely critical to the success of the Center for the Performing Arts. Our city is better today because Rollie chose to invest his time, energy and heart here, and understood the community as something you build one thoughtful decision at a time.”

Although a Zionsville resident, Dick had strong business, civic and personal ties with Carmel. Brainard said Dick “showed us that leadership doesn’t always require a spotlight — just integrity, persistence and care for the common good.”

NOT SLOWING DOWN New PrimeLife director eager to advance nonprofit’s mission

However, she believes her favorite job is just getting started.

The Westfield resident became the executive director Jan. 5 of PrimeLife Enrichment, a nonprofit that operates programming for senior citizens from Hamilton County and beyond at its facility in Carmel.

Thompson learned about PrimeLife from a neighbor who raved about her membership there. When she saw it was seeking an executive director, Thompson — between jobs at the time —decided to pay a visit.

She was immediately impressed.

“There is true attention to this stage of our lives with the utmost of respect,” said Thompson, 61. “I walk around and there’s just warmth and joy and friendship. I think it’s just the coolest place in the world.”

Thompson replaces Gary Wagner, 76, who retired at the end of December. He joined PrimeLife in 2018 as its chief development officer and became executive director in 2020.

During Wagner’s tenure at the top, PrimeLife membership more than tripled, and the nonprofit increased the size of its fleet providing free or low-cost rides for seniors. In addition, PrimeLife landed “on the radar screen of local government,” Wagner said, leading to new connections and potential grant opportunities.

A top priority for Wanger — and now Thompson — is identifying a long-term sustainable funding solution, as many nonprofits are facing cuts in government grants and other sources.

Another major challenge is space, as Thompson said PrimeLife has nearly outgrown its building at 1078 3rd Ave. SW. She is working with the nonprofit’s board to determine how to address the issue, whether by opening another facility or moving to a larger location.

is transitioning from one perfect fit to another in the executive director role.

“They’re both very strong leaders with good experience behind them,” Claerbout said. “They both have a love for the seniors, and that’s harder to find.”

Thompson said she saw how staying social and active helped her parents live fulfilling lives well into their final years. Her mom died at age 82 and her dad at 91.

“I realize just how valuable that is, and I want that for myself — and for everyone,” Thompson said. “I want all of us, no matter your age, to recognize that we can have vibrant lives our entire life, but we have to be intentional about that.”

Thompson, a 2025 graduate of the Hamilton County Leadership Academy, describes herself as a collaborative and strategic leader. She intends to spend much of her initial time at PrimeLife listening to feedback from members.

As for Wagner, in retirement he plans to spend more time with his grandchildren, volunteer, play golf and write.

“I have to practice what I’ve been preaching and stay active,” he said. “I’m not going to sit around and watch daytime television.”

Wagner will also remain involved with PrimeLife, this time as a member of the board. He said working at the nonprofit was the best job he ever had, and he’s not ready to fully cut ties.

“What I will miss the most, besides the friendships, is the fulfillment that I received from the mission of PrimeLife,” Wagner said. “It’s a unique organization, and one that I will never probably ever get out of my consciousness.”

Kurr Med Spa expands, adds Champagne room

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Kimberly Espich came up with a new business idea while in the process of expanding Kurr Aesthetics and Med Spa. She and her husband, Chad Helm, purchased the building next door to its existing location at 222 W. Main St. in the Carmel Arts & Design District in June. The upstairs rooms of the new building are used for expanded services.

Starting with the idea of having a spot for clients to have a drink after treatment, Espich decided to open a separate business called The Champagne Society in the downstairs space.

“We’re thinking of little private get-togethers, a little baby shower and tasting for our clients,” Espich said.

“We are planning to open to the public but thought let’s get our feet wet right now with private parties. One neighbor came by and said her dream has come true, Champagne in a neighborhood little bar.”

The Champagne Society has a beer and wine license and will have a light menu, possibly with charcuterie and caviar. It is set to open to the public Jan. 23.

“We’re doing mainly Champagne, because our whole concept is you can’t go anywhere in the city, to my knowledge, and get true Champagne by the glass,” Espich said. “You might be able to order one type. We hope to be where we’ve got a menu of 10 Champagnes and you can get what you want by the glass. When you go to a restaurant, you usually have to buy a bottle or have a prosecco.”

Espich said there is comfortable seating for 25.

Kurr Med Spa opened in 2007 in Carmel. With the expansion, it has grown from seven treatment rooms to 12.

Teresa Reynolds and the Slicktones set for Local Mix Music Series

“My dad was always spinning his deep collection of jazz records, but MTV was also taking over the mainstream and exposing me to all kinds of genres and artists,” she said. “My eclectic taste definitely shows up in my music, which I describe as a blend of ‘90s pop R&B, with jazz, soul and disco.”

Reynolds will bring her unique brand of music to The Tarkington in the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Reynolds and the Slicktones, who are making their Allied Solutions Center debut, will participate in the Local Mix Music Series at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22.

“We play mostly in Indianapolis, so I think this is a great chance to play for some folks that maybe haven’t gotten to see us yet,” she said. “There’s something for everyone with the Slicktones, so Carmel audiences are in for a treat.”

Reynolds formed the Slicktones in 2021.

“We’re like a family at this point,” she said. “When I formed this group, I knew that Mina Keohane, my pianist, and Poncho Hedrick, my bassist, had to be part of it. I’d been fans and friends of theirs for a while, then we added Matthew Dupree on drums and vocals and Joshua Ginder on guitar, and I knew we had stumbled onto something really special. For our upcoming show at The Tarkington, we’ll have some special guests joining us, with Fred Miller on guitar, Melissa Gallant on harp, D’yshe Mansfield singing background vocals and Shannon Kaminski tap dancing.”

The group has performed in venues such as The Mousetrap and Jazz Kitchen and played at festivals and parks concert series.

School in 1999. After graduating from Ball State University, she moved to New York City to pursue theater.

“I had just gotten a degree in acting from BSU, so when I arrived in the city, I hit the ground running,” she said. “I was cast in a show, ‘Platanos and Collard Greens,’ which was featured in the New York Times and became the longest-running off-Broadway show starring a minority cast.

Later, I wrote, produced and directed theater and sketch comedy, but then music fell into my lap.”

During her 14 years in NYC, she performed regularly with David Ippolito, known as That Guitar Man, who played weekly concerts in Central Park.

“The New York Times called him the most famous person you’ve never heard of,” Reynolds said. “He could be playing for a few hundred people to a 1,000. I started singing with him in

2009 and performed with him until I left.”

Reynolds also traveled and sang backing vocals for Gloria Gaynor for four years starting in 2014.

“Performing with Gloria Gaynor was incredible,” Reynolds said. “One of my first gigs with her was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in front of 10,000 people, and I was pinching myself the whole time. Sharing the stage with her, Chaka Khan and Nile Rodgers on New Year’s Eve in Dubai was one of the greatest thrills of my life.”

Reynolds returned to Indianapolis in 2018.

“After being in Indianapolis for several years, I’ve finally gotten back into theater again with the Indianapolis Black Theatre Co. and just wrote a solo musical, ‘Facing It Face to Face with Dollface,’ which will be performed as part of the Black Solo Festival at the end of the month at the District Theatre in Indianapolis,” she said.

Reynolds writes original songs for her band. Her brother, TJ Reynolds, helps with production.

“The Slicktones take the live instrumentation, and we make it our own,” she said. “It’s a real team effort.”

Reynolds started a small business, Teresa Reynolds Arts & Events, to help boost opportunities for other local artists.

“The first big event I did was the For the Culture Fest in 2022,” she said. “It was a free daylong festival celebrating the diversity of music, arts and culture in Indy’s Black community. I’m always looking for chances to collaborate with and uplift the creators I’m surrounded by here in town. One project I’m currently working on is the development of the Crooked Creek Cultural Campus, a brand-new theater, arts and cultural space on the west side of Indianapolis.”

Editor, The endless conveyor belt of traffic inching toward Carmel’s beloved Christkindlmarkt this year offers a preview of what’s to come: Congested routes full of frustrated drivers and their orchestra of horns.

Just below this struggle were some 10,000 people per day, floating across Carter Green with mulled wine, past vendors selling cuckoo clocks and hot chocolate — a Hallmark movie scene, more or less.

And this juxtaposition gets at what comes next: Even as Carmel designs some of the most inviting, walkable places in the state, traffic to and from those pedestrian-friendly areas is going to get worse. Carmel can reestablish itself as the leader among Indy’s suburbs by prioritizing alternatives to car trips. A year-round version of our charming holiday trolley is a start. It teases for a few weeks each winter how seamless trips to and from our urban core could be. Imagine leaving the car at home and skipping the parking search.

Cities smaller than ours have implemented alternatives to car trips that save folks time and money while sparking the kind of developments we need — namely, those close to a variety of transportation options, walkable areas and bike paths — to ensure the holiday traffic of late doesn’t become the norm.

New wheel tax a predictable result Editor, Carmel recently passed a wheel tax, claiming the city does not have enough money to maintain and repair its roads.

While that may be true today, it is not an accident — it is the predictable result of decisions made over many years by the mayor, city council and the Carmel Redevelopment Commission.

Carmel has aggressively used tax increment financing to subsidize development. Under TIF, when development increases property values, the new property tax revenue is diverted away from the city’s general fund and committed to development projects, often for decades.

These decisions are approved by the CRC and enabled by the city council, with the mayor’s support. The result is less money available for basic services like road maintenance, even as new

development increases traffic and accelerates wear on existing roads.

This situation is not caused by Senate Enrolled Act 1. That law applies statewide, and many Indiana communities are maintaining their roads without imposing a new local tax. Carmel’s funding shortfall is the result of local policy choices — specifically, how much future tax revenue city leadership chose to commit to development incentives.

When large portions of a city’s tax base are locked into TIF districts, fewer dollars are left for core responsibilities.

Rather than reevaluating those priorities or reducing reliance on subsidies, city leadership has chosen to shift the burden to residents through a new tax.

This isn’t about opposing growth. It’s about accountability.

Laws of average Commentary by Terry Anker January is laden with annual retrospectives listing those who have passed during the last calendar year. The lists’ popularity stands as testimony to the role that the famous, and infamous, hold in our collective culture. We are saddened to learn that our favorite Mouseketeer, whom we’ve not seen in anything for 40 years, has passed, aged 79. It reminds us, perhaps, of our own mortality, all the while sweetened by a bit of nostalgia. Like us, most have lived long and storied lives with rises and falls, career-ending moves and resurrecting ones, and all the personal drama that one can fit into just under a century. But some on the list, too many, really, die shockingly young. Cancer and accidents are often held as causation, but so are suicide and self-destructive drug use. How can this be?
