Braun talks business at OneZone luncheon By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Indiana Gov. Mike Braun told area business owners Dec. 10 that Indiana’s geographic location, business-friendly environment and fiscal health give the Hoosier state a leg up to maintaining its economic viability. Braun was the special guest during the OneZone Chamber annual meeting and luncheon, and spoke for about 30 minutes with OneZone President and CEO Jack Russell in front of a crowd of chamber members at the FORUM Event Center in Fishers. Braun said that while Indiana has great opportunities, leaders still need to put in the work to make sure the state benefits. He added that he wants the business community to step up and not rely on state government to solve everything. “Businesses are going to be the main beneficiaries of child care. They’re going to be the main beneficiaries of preschool,” he said, adding that he wants the business community to be involved in creating and financing solutions to

those kinds of needs. “That’s kind of what I preach. I want to make sure that government is doing everything it can, short of paying for it, when the beneficiaries are going to be clearly Main Street and bigger companies.” Braun said Hamilton County is one of the state’s success stories, economically, but there are other counties that are struggling. “You need to keep doing what you’re doing,” he said. “Help us see how we can get more counties to take what you’ve got that’s working, and then I’m always going to be a business partner with you to make sure you keep heading

in the direction that you seem to have done pretty well on your own.” He said energy is and will be the big issue moving forward, driven by the need for data centers. He said the amount of energy one center needs surprised him. “When you start hearing megawatts, gigawatts — and one data center can take one gigawatt of electricity,” he said. “I wondered how many gigawatts are we producing? I figured, just by common sense, surely one data center couldn’t be more than 1 percent. I was astounded — we only produce 20 gigawatts of electricity for all households and existing businesses (in Indiana).” Braun said he wants the state to keep utility rates low for residents but also find a way to bring data centers to rural areas that need the potential economic boost. As part of her exploratory efforts, Ditlevson launched a District 31 Community Priorities Survey. Ditlevson is the second Fishers Republican to express interest in the Senate District 31 seat. Hamilton Southeastern Schools Board of Trustees President Juanita Albright declared her candidacy Dec. 4.

HSE Schools redistricting plans finalized By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com After some final tweaks to affect fewer students, the Hamilton Southeastern Schools Board of Trustees voted unanimously Dec. 10 to approve new boundary maps for the district’s elementary and middle schools for the 2026-27 school year. The redistricting process began several months ago and is a response, in part, to lower enrollment as well as changing demographics. A recommendation from Woolpert consultant Andrew Bishop was presented during the board’s November meeting, but those maps were adjusted before the Dec. 10 meeting and again at the meeting before the board gave final approval. Several parents spoke during the Dec. 10 meeting, thanking the district for making those changes, which will allow their children to remain at their current schools. Leah Burke said she was impressed with the collaborative process. “My neighborhood was going to be split in … the redistricting proposal presented last month,” she said. “Some neighbors and I came last month and spoke about how splitting neighborhoods would not just negatively impact us, but really the Fishers community at large — how that would not be good for us — and some other families expressed unrelated concerns about their own impacts. What I can tell you is, we were heard. You all asked several great questions. We

had a conversation.” Other speakers noted that even with adjustments in the revised map, their school boundaries would change, adding that their communities have changed schools multiple times in the past decade due to prior redistricting. In response, the board agreed to move a couple more lines in the map through an amendment proposed by Board Member Suzanne Thomas. She noted that changing the lines might mean another redistricting sooner than otherwise and added that Fishers

is continuing to grow. With more people moving in and as the population shifts, she said, the district will have to make more adjustments. Bishop previously said that he hoped the redistricting plan would last seven years. He agreed that making adjustments to the recommended plan could shorten that time frame. Superintendent Patrick Mapes added that while new homes are planned throughout the community, it’s difficult to predict how many new residents moving in will have school-aged children. “We’ve heard from a demographer who says birth rates nationally and in Hamilton County have slowed down,” he said. “We know there is the opportunity for subdivisions and homes to go in, but you know, who’s going to move into them and do they have any children? We’ve seen a lot of our community turn into retirement communities and they don’t have kids who are coming to our schools.” He said it makes sense to base new boundary maps primarily on current student populations, rather than what may or may not happen in the next few years. The goal of redistricting is to better balance school populations. Several HSE Schools elementary buildings have been significantly below capacity, while others were at 90 percent capacity or more. INCOG plans 2nd expansion By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com A Fishers-based biopharmaceutical company is moving forward with plans to expand its business for a second time following the Fishers City Council’s approval of an economic development agreement. The council voted unanimously Dec. 15 for a 10-year tax abatement on INCOG BioPharma Services’ planned $80 million expansion, which will add 350 new jobs, bringing the company’s total employment to about 700. The company already has a third expansion in the works that would bring total employment to 1,000 by 2030. Economic Development Director Megan Baumgartner told the council that the company has been a reliable and committed partner with the city. “In 2020, the initial commitment that they made to the city was a $60 million investment, 250 jobs,” she said. “In 2024, they came back with an additional, so Phase 2 for them, which was the first expansion of an additional $40 million and additional 175 jobs.

And here tonight, we have their third phase, second expansion, with an additional $80 million in investment and 350 new jobs.” The agreement also called for the city to provide $1 million from its stormwater grant fund for the company to improve drainage while adding additional parking. INCOG BioPharma Services, Inc. founder and CEO Cory Lewis told the council that the upcoming expansion is not the last and they plan to have about 1,000 employees by 2030, with a total new investment of $200 million – made possible in part by state incentives. INCOG, which opened in 2022, specializes in sterile injectable biopharmaceuticals. For more about INCOG, visit incogbiopharma.com. In other matters, the council chose new officers for 2026. Council President Pete Peterson nominated Councilor John DeLucia to be the new president and the motion passed unanimously. Councilor Tiffanie Ditlevson was voted in as the new vice president.

Hamilton Southeastern High School is the new high school champion and Fishers Junior High took first in the middle school competition. Fishers High School graduate earns national teen title By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Vani Sharma always enters a pageant with realistic goals. “Anytime you go into a pageant, you never know what’s going to happen because it’s very subjective,” she said. “I always go in having small goals, whether it’s making a new friend that day or doing my best in the competitions, really not focusing on the result but focusing on those small moments along the way. At the end of the day, you’re going to remember most the memories that you made with the people you spent time with during the 10 days.” Following that process worked. The 2024 Fishers High School graduate, representing Indiana, was named National American Miss Teen Nov. 30 in Orlando. “Walking away with a national title was just so incredible,” she said. “I felt so confident on the stage. It felt so full circle to be on the stage I’ve basically grown up on. Indiana hasn’t walked away with a national title in over a decade, so that made it so much sweeter.”

Sharma, a 19-year-old sophomore at Indiana University majoring in marketing and accounting, began competing in National American Miss pageants in 2016. This was her fifth time at nationals, representing Fishers three times and Indiana twice. Sharma was the fourth runner-up in the National Miss Preteen competition in 2019. “We did our final walk in our gown and then they cut to the top 12,” Sharma said. “We did our personal introduction and then they were cut to top five.”

The top five contestants were then asked the same questions, but Sharma said they were given white noise headphones backstage, so they couldn’t hear the other contestants’ responses. The question concerned how the contestants deal with social media. “How can we stay away from that negativity and choose a positive space to be in?” she said. “They always say if there had been a different panel or set of judges, the results could be totally different.” Sharma also competed in optional categories of actress and runway.

“I was fortunate to take away the runway winner for National American Miss while I was there, so that was a nice treat,” she said. “You get to expand your skills through optional competitions.” Sharma’s platform is EASE, which stands for educate, achieve, smile and empower. She earned a $5,000 scholarship for winning the title. There will be an upcoming national photo shoot with other pageant winners for branding and promotion. Sharma will participate in a summer tour in 2026, attending other state pageants. “We have smaller trips throughout the year for personal development and gaining a lot of skills,” she said. “We’re fortunate to have a lot of sponsors and they all provide guidance throughout the reign. It’s a chance to use your title to make a difference. I’m excited to do a lot of service projects, which is something I’m passionate about.” She will crown her successor in November 2026. In 2027, she can compete for National American Miss or compete for titles in other organizations.

HSE senior girls basketball player keeps growing game By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurent.com Hamilton Southeastern High School senior basketball player Kayla Stidham was faced with a difficult decision. The 6-foot Stidham chose to transfer from the New Palestine school system to HSE in eighth grade. “I wouldn’t be where I am without HSE,” she said. “It has helped me grow as a person and player. It was also one of the hardest decisions leaving everything I knew to start something brand new, but it was one of the best decisions I’ve made.” Stidham, who will play for Bowling Green State University next season, is averaging 14.9 points and a teamhigh 7.1 rebounds per game through 11 games for the Royals (9-2). She averaged 10.5 ppg last season and 11.9 ppg as a sophomore. “My individual goals are to continue doing the little things like rebounding and diving for loose balls,” Stidham said. “As a team, I hope we are able to make another run. We have a lot of young girls who all work super hard and

HSE coach Brian Satterfield said Stidham has improved in several areas throughout her high school career. “She has become a more well-rounded player,” he said. “When she first joined the program, she was mainly an offensive threat. This year, she leads the team in rebounds and has recorded four

double-doubles so far. Her improvement defensively has also been a huge plus for our team.” Stidham is shooting 38 percent from the field, including 31 percent from 3-point range. She shot 43 percent overall and 40 percent on 3-pointers last season. Satterfield said opponents are focusing more on Stidham and Kennedy Holman this season with the graduation of top scorer Maya Makulusky, the 2025 Indiana Miss Basketball. “In the past, the defense would focus on Maya, and that allowed Kayla to get better quality looks,” he said. “Kayla

has begun to get a better feel for this and has slowly been bringing up her percentages. She hasn’t settled for just jump shots and has been aggressive going to the rim and the basket. With these improvements, she made it more challenging for someone to guard her.” Stidham said her biggest improvement has been in becoming a more complete player, not simply a shooter. “I’ve been working on being more physical and getting to the basket while also working on the defensive end,” she said. Her leadership ability has grown as well. “Helping the underclassmen work through the struggles and stresses that come in high school has been a big point — not just on the court, but also off the court,” she said. Stidham’s mother, Lisa Shepherd-Stidham, was the 1997 Indiana Miss Basketball from Richmond High School. The former Penn State University player was inducted into Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023. Stidham said she always had a goal of being an Indiana All-Star.

HOOSIER HYSTERIA Local youth compete in regional adaptive basketball tournament

By Marney Simon news@youarecurrent.com The basketball courts at Pro Net Sports in Fishers are always full on weekends. But Dec. 13-14, the sounds of dribbling and buzzer beaters were accompanied by the whirl of wheels, as young athletes with RHI Racers adaptive basketball program hosted the 2025 Hoosier Hoops Classic wheelchair basketball tournament. RHI Racers varsity and junior teams each took home the gold at the end of the two-day tournament, toppling teams from Missouri, Ohio and Michigan. RHI Racers are part of the adaptive sports program through the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana. Based in Indianapolis, the adaptive sports program provides opportunities for individuals with physical disabilities in central Indiana to participate in adaptive sports and recreation, including basketball, golf, lacrosse, tennis, hockey, baseball, soccer, waterskiing and more. “We have a clinic once a year in the summertime that RHI will put on,” junior team coach Ed Landreph said. “We go to different clinics (and) we get the word out. We’ve only got one (adaptive basketball) team in Indiana. There are definitely more kids out there that are in wheelchairs that could definitely learn how to play.” Landreph and his wife, Kristen, have two children in the league. The family travels from Muncie each Saturday for practice and said adaptable sports like wheelchair basketball are similar to travel sports — it’s about commitment, time and a lot of travel. “It’s the game of basketball. The only thing is they’re not walking. They’re still dribbling. They’re still shooting the ball. They’re still passing,” Ed Landreph said. “They’re still playing with their friends and it’s no different than regular basketball.” That includes the same kind of aggressive play that is normal among Hoosiers when it comes to basketball. “You flip over a lot,” said player Jon-

athin Perez, 12, of Indianapolis. Now in his sixth year with RHI Racers, Perez said he likes the relationships he’s made along the way and said it’s one of his favorite parts of the league. “It’s to meet new friends on the other teams and just build better relationships with them,” he said. Teammate Easton Gaynor, 13, of Zionsville echoed the sentiment. “I like meeting new people,” he said. “Every Saturday we have a two-hour practice, but after practice I don’t work too hard.” Gaynor, who has spina bifida, is in his third year in the league. Elon Taylor, 13, of Bloomington said the league provides access to his favorite pastime in a competitive way. “I like that it takes my disability in a sport that I love and combines it into

one,” he said. “I like the speed. I don’t train as much as I want to, but I’ll get some shots in like 20 minutes every day maybe.” Although the game is played in a wheelchair, not all participants are full-time wheelchair users. All children in the league have a lower-extremity disability ranging from limb loss to spina bifida. “It’s all about being active and being involved, just like your peers,” Kristen Landreph said. “Because individuals may have a disability, but that doesn’t stop them from doing what everyone else does. You just kind of have to think outside of the box and then look to see what’s available and you have to find what’s right for your family, what’s right for your child. You may try out basketball and say, ‘This isn’t right for me.’ But you may try out tennis and

ADAPTIVE SPORTS IN CENTRAL INDIANA Although basketball may be the unofficial sport of Indiana, the RHI Adaptive Sports Program at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana has a variety of sports — competitive and recreational — for individuals with spinal cord, orthopedic, neuromuscular and visual impairments. The program began in 1996 with an

adaptive water ski clinic and grew to include everything from competitive basketball and golf to boxing and yoga. The program includes competitive and noncompetitive sports for all ages, with 30 to 40 recreational clinics offered yearly. Learn more at rhirehab.com under the Our Programs tab.

say, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is my thing.’ It’s not having kids mold into one particular thing — it’s just about trying and experiencing and finding out what you like and what you don’t like.” Ed Landreph said young athletes who participate in regular league play at Pro Net Sports in Fishers made a point during the tournament to watch the action. “When they walk by, they’re just looking at it and saying, ‘It’s so cool.’” he said. “You can just hear them talking about how cool these kids are, but it’s no different than regular basketball. When I ask my own friends at work if they want to come watch us play, when they show up they can’t believe how physical it is, how everyone plays together. It’s really physical, especially the varsity team. They’re allowed to press and they hit each other hard. It’s no different than any other sport.” The RHI Racers participate in events throughout the year. The teams travel to Cartersville, Ga. in January for their next tournament. Award-winning Carmel musician stays busy with songwriting, performing By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com Singer-songwriter Tay Bronson likes to have fun with his songs. The 54-year-old Carmel resident, who describes his style as traditional country, released a new single Nov. 19 called “Golf Cart” that is available on all streaming platforms. The song is a tongue-in-cheek ode to a rolling neighborhood parade of golf carts. There is a music video on Bronson’s YouTube channel. Bronson’s song idea came from visiting his girlfriend’s permanent campsite at Indian Lakes in northern Indiana. “It’s more like Indian ponds because they are tiny little lakes,” he said. “It’s like glamping and people are driving around on golf carts. Having my cynical sense of humor, I got up one morning and I didn’t want to use the toy hauler bathroom, so I went to the bathroom and there’s a lot of golf carts lined up with dads doing the same thing I was doing.” Bronson sent a text message to his girlfriend about his situation and the different types of golf carts. Then he decided to turn it into a song. “The song killed it at the campground, so I had to make a video that is just as funny as the song,” Bronson said, Bronson had friends from the campground follow him around. “I was acting like a goofball on the back of the golf cart playing the song,” he said. Besides the recent release, Bronson’s 2024 album, “Bad Apple,” was named the Male Album of the Year in August at the International Singer-Songwriter Association Awards ceremony in Atlanta. “It’s kind of like the minor leagues to the Country Music Awards or Grammys,” he said. “I was tickled pink to have my album recognized as Album of

the Year. There are 35,000 members in the organization.” Bronson’s band is called Tay Bronson and the Tackle Box. The band includes keyboardist Jason Barth and drummer Matt DeVore, both Carmel residents, who were previously Push Down & Turn with Bronson. Bronson, Barth and DeVore own Carmel-based Premier Group, a home automation company, which they started in 1999. “We were thinking if we start our own business, we can work four days a week and still have gigs on the weekend with Push Down & Turn,” Bronson said. Bronson was the primary songwriter and bassist for Push Down & Turn, an alternative rock band, “We formed the band (in 1991) when we were at school at DePauw University,” he said. “We had a run of like 10 years. We had a bus and we would load up and keep rolling. We sounded like Matchbox Twenty and Counting Crows or something like that.” Bronson compared touring life to being in the Army.

“We would go to the gig, and they would feed us and give us beer and you weren’t spending money,” he said. Band members would return to their homes and realize they weren’t making that much money. Push Down & Turn was on the HORDE — Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere — Tour in 1997. “We won a spot through a Battle of Bands and we got five dates on the tour,” Bronson said. “There were different bands, but the main headliner was Neil Young and Crazy Horse.” The Push Down & Turn hasn’t played regularly since 2003, but it performed a reunion show at The Vogue Theatre in Indianapolis in 2016. ‘“We were going to try to do a reunion show every few years, but that got put on the back burner,” he said. The Tackle Box also includes bassist Scott Nelson and pedal steel player Joe Alterio. Bronson also performs smaller singer-songwriter concerts. Bronson’s debut album was “Drinks & Memories,” which features 12 songs built on his life experiences. For more, visit taybronson.com
