Generating station celebrates 75 years

In 1950, the lights flickered on for the first time when the Noblesville Generating Station at 21225 Riverwood Ave. began operations.

The station, a Duke Energy power plant that generates electricity, recently celebrated its 75th anniversary.

Public Service Indiana Resources, a predecessor of Duke Energy, built the station, which had two Westinghouse steam turbines and three Riley Stoker coal-fired boilers that delivered 90 megawatts of electricity.

Today, the station uses a natural gas combined cycle, which integrates the natural gas process while still using the original Westinghouse steam turbines.

“The plant is part of our Indiana fleet of generating sources that serve more than 920,000 customers in portions of 69 of Indiana’s 92 counties,” said Angeline Protogere, a spokeswoman for Duke Energy.

Casey Jeffers, the station’s operations superintendent, has been with the plant since 2017 and Duke Energy since 2007.

“There have been a lot of dedicated individuals throughout the years,” Jeffers said. “We all wear many hats and just have a good solid team here.”

Heath Reynolds, 50, began working at the station in 1998. He had just returned from the Navy and his father-in-law, Joe Hunter, who retired from the station in the early 2000s, suggested he try to find work at the plant.

Reynolds, a senior production team member, has witnessed the plant’s transformation over the years, such as when it went from a coal-burning plant to a natural gas combined cycle in 2003.

Reynold’s son, Blake Reynolds, 23, started working at the plant in August. He remembers visiting the station as a boy.

“My dad (has been) an operator here my entire life,” Blake said.

“It was really cool,” Blake said. “I had never been around a big industrious plant like that. I remember looking at all the gauges in the control room. A lot of them are not used anymore, but it was cool to see.”

County honors employees, approves election software

The commissioners also discussed bridge rehabilitation projects, a new election management system and the status of Community Development Block Grant funds.

The final commissioners meeting of the year is at 1 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Hamilton County Government and Judicial Center in Noblesville.  WHAT HAPPENED: The commissioners honored employees who have been with the county for 30, 35, 40 and 45 years.  WHAT IT MEANS: Each employee received a pin at the meeting. Chris Stice, Dani Sheller, Daniel Trowbridge, Kerry Graham, Kim Christman, Paul McGriff and Steve Bilby were honored for 30 years; Bill Clifford, Dianna Lynch, Mark McCauley and Russ Milkey were honored for 35 years, Steve Dillinger and Jennifer Hayden were honored for 40 years; and Lynette Duvall was honored for 45 years.  WHAT HAPPENED: The county reviewed two bridge rehabilitation projects.

 WHAT’S NEXT: The new system, Integra, will be used to assign poll workers and do their claims, among other items.

 WHAT IT MEANS: The commissioners planned to review bid openings for rehabilitation projects on the bridge on Hazel Dell Parkway over Cool Creek in Clay Township and the bridge on Cumberland Road over Mud Creek in Fall Creek and Delaware Townships. However, neither project has received a bid.

Hamilton County Highway Director Brad Davis said the jobs are small and a combined project, and he expected at least three bids. He said the time of year could play a factor.

 WHAT HAPPENED: The commissioners reviewed what Community Development Block Grant funds have been used for since October 2024. CDBG funds are federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development given to states and local governments to create “livable” communities for low- to moderate-income people.

 WHAT’S NEXT: Davis said the highway department will contact contractors to see if they can move the projects forward. Construction on the Hazel Dell Parkway bridge is expected to address deterioration and include a bridge deck overlay, concrete patching and installing channel scour countermeasures. Construction on the Cumberland Road bridge is expected to address areas of deterioration.  WHAT HAPPENED: The commissioners approved an agreement regarding election management software for poll workers.  WHAT IT MEANS: Hamilton County Clerk Kathy Williams said the current software was created in-

Kanger began the role Dec. 15.

Junior guard provides motor for the Eagles

By Mark Ambrogi mark@yourearecurrent.com Zionsville Community High School junior Kenzie Chapman has an abundance of energy.

“She makes us go in every aspect of the game,” Eagles girls basketball coach Jennifer Drudge said. “She has a motor that never stops anytime we’re trying to break the press. The really special thing about Kenzie isn’t just the way she can score and the way she can distribute, it’s her ability to play hard every single possession of every single day. It doesn’t matter if we are in practice or in a game, she competes to win every single possession. When she gets tired, she finds something within herself to go even harder.”

Drudge said Chapman has outstanding leadership skills.

“She’s positive, whether she walks into a gymnasium, or a classroom, or a church, she’s making it a better place,” she said.

Through the first eight games, Chapman averaged 12.3 points, 4.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game for the Eagles (5-3).

“I’m able to see the floor better.”

Chapman has primarily played the point guard spot the last two seasons.

She played more shooting guard as a freshman. “(The different positions) definitely

come with their challenges and positives to each one,” she said. “I think playing off the ball is fun because you are coming off screen. Being the ballhandler, you kind of step into more of a leadership role. As a point guard, you have to run the sets and make sure everybody’s in the right position. Learning how to get others involved as well is something that’s challenging. Over the years, I’ve gotten to be in the point guard position.”

Chapman, who plays for the Indiana Basketball Club, is shooting 37 percent overall from the field and 27 percent

from 3-point range. Last season, she averaged 12.5 ppg while shooting 41 percent from the field and 34 percent from 3-point range.

“The beginning of this season from the 3-point line hasn’t been as good as it was last year yet,” she said. “My 2-pointers have been relatively good this season. I’m just working on getting my 3-point percentage back up.”

Chapman’s main goal for the season is for the Eagles to win the Class 4A sectional.

“We just have to really focus and be disciplined during the season,” she said.

“As far as individual stats, I want to have less turnovers than I did last year, just one or two turnovers per game. I want to average double digits for points and be more consistent with that.”

Chapman has offers from Indiana University Indianapolis. the University of Evansville, Cleveland State University and the University of Southern Indiana.

She also has received interest from Loyola University Chicago, Northern Illinois University and Illinois State University.

County department relocates

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com A renovated building is providing new opportunities for the Hamilton County Soil & Water Conservation District.

The county department has moved to 1721 Pleasant St. in Noblesville, formerly the Humane Society and low-cost spay and neuter clinic.

According to HCSWCD Urban Conservationist Claire Lane, the move was essential because of the expansion of programs and services in the last decade.

“Our old building is going to be demolished because of the Reimagine Pleasant Street project, so the move is part of this big revitalization of this whole area,” Lane said. “(The county) really listened to our needs of what we needed to function better and provide more services. It’s been a long time coming.”

Lane looks forward to upcoming changes.

look when the new year starts, but the biggest thing for us is just the space to host people, host meetings and host our own workshops,” Lane said. “We haven’t been able to do any of that, and it’s really been a limitation as far as what we could offer, particularly related to education. So, being able to do that inhouse has everybody really excited.”

HCSWCD also is developing a conservation academy and launching a mobile soil health trailer in 2026.

When parenting time gets messy, a little structure goes a long way. For separated or divorced parents, peace is a plan, not a miracle. Here are five mediation-tested strategies that consistently help my clients navigate the season with less stress and more cooperation.

LOCK IN THE CALENDAR EARLY Confirm holiday schedules in advance. Send one clear message with your proposed dates and a deadline for response. Example: “I propose we confirm by Nov. 15. By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com Noblesville High School graduate Reid Crandall is not a dancer, but that’s about to change.

Crandall, 45, is a contestant in the Riley Hospital for Children “Reason to Dance, Reason for Hope” competition, a ballroom dance contest modeled after the television show “Dancing with the Stars.” The event is March 13, 2026, at the Indiana Roof Ballroom. Competitors raise money for the hospital through their participation.

Crandall, a partner and vice president at BBC Pump and Equipment Co. in Indianapolis, learned about the competition from a co-worker who participated last year.

“I guess part of the deal when you sign up is to try to find somebody to take your place the next year,” said Crandall, who grew up in Noblesville but now resides in Fishers. “He reached out to me and said, ‘Hey, you want to do this?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely not. When do we start?’”

Crandall practices with his professional dance partner, Justis Linder, who works with the event through the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Carmel. They will perform two dances in the competition.

It is Linder’s fourth year participating.

Linder “I have loved being a part of such an incredible cause,” Linder said. “I’m looking forward to partnering with Reid to create some fun routines.”

The primary goal of the competition is fundraising for Riley.

“My company is sponsoring me in it, and then I am also trying to raise money to benefit the cause,” Crandall said.

“There’s sponsorships and tables and tickets that I can help sell, and then also just trying to get people to make small donations in my name.”

Several awards are given at the competition, including for the most money raised. The event is televised at Riley so

patients can vote.

“We have to try to keep it kid-centric so the kids can judge,” Crandall said.

“Hopefully, we will create something to appeal to them so it’s not just raising funds for them, but something fun for them, too.”

Although he looks forward to competing, Crandall said it’s “terrifying.”

“I don’t have much experience, but to be fair, the people who have competed in the past have not had much experience, either,” Crandall said. “That’s part of the fun — having people work with professionals to see how much they can learn in a short amount of time.”

The cause also is close to his heart, as his stepson, Ewan, spent a month at Riley after he was born prematurely.

“I didn’t know him at that time, but my wife, Holly, and Ewan spent a lot of time there because he was born early and had some difficulty breathing,” Crandall said. “He couldn’t figure out how to keep breathing and eat at the

same time. They spent time with the child life therapists and professionals that are there, which is half of what this event is raising money for.”

The Child Life Program at Riley is funded through donations and provides families therapeutic interventions to support kids during medical procedures, illnesses and hospitalization.

“This is my chance to give back to something that helped my family in the past,” Crandall said.

Through the competition, Crandall wants to make a positive impact not only for Riley patients, but also his three children.

“I want to have fun with it,” Crandall said. “I think a lot of folks can understand there’s a lot of anxiety around performing in front of people and doing something that you are really not proficient at. One thing I’d like to do for my kids is show them they can do hard things if they just put their mind to it.”

He also hopes to continue to bring

Although former Noblesville resident Reid Crandall has little dance experience, he is no stranger to music.

Crandall developed his love for music as a student at Noblesville High School. He bought his first guitar at his grandparents’ Noblesville music store, Zinn Music, which closed in 1999. He also formed a rock band after graduation.

“I was in a band called Blue Sky Goodbye,” Crandall said. “I started it when I was in school down at Indiana University with a couple of friends I knew from NHS and some other people we met down there.”

The band recorded a demo, got signed to an independent label and put out a record. After Crandall graduated from the Kelley School of Business in 2003, the band hit the road.

“We toured the country for a couple of years, and it was fun and challenging,” Crandall said. “All good things come to an end. I had to settle down and be an adult, but not before many successful tours, two record releases and playing alongside acts both widely recognizable and completely unknown.”

Not-so-scary doctor visits Commentary by Carrie Starnes For some kids, a trip to the doctor can be scary. A little preparation can go a long way in easing their fears before a routine check-up, vaccination or something more involved, like a blood draw.

Here are a few tips that aim to ease medical visits for the youngest patients.

BE HONEST For a child, honesty is the best policy in building trust and allowing them to confront the realities of the medical setting. If your child has concerns about blood draws or injections, call the office to see if there are options to make them more comfortable. Give your child honest answers if they have questions about a medical visit. If you know they will get a needle poke but tell them they won’t, this can keep them from feeling safe in a medical environment.

PLAY Play allows kids to explore their emotions and what they might experience during a medical visit. One approach is role-play. Let your child be the “doctor” for a favorite stuffed animal. Pretend to give the stuffed animal a check-up or a

shot. This helps kids process emotions that may arise during a medical visit and allows you to find ways to ease your child’s fears during medical visits.

DISTRACTION Bring a favorite book, toy or even a tablet for games or videos during the appointment. Focusing on something fun can make procedures feel less overwhelming.

TAKE A VIRTUAL TOUR Visit the hospital or doctor’s office online if available. Show your child pictures of the lobby, exam rooms and even the people who work there. Seeing the environment ahead of time can reduce the fear of the unknown.

These strategies can help with everything from dental cleanings to more complex visits. The goal isn’t to eliminate every worry — it’s to help kids feel safe, informed and supported.

Beltone, a global hearing care brand with clinics in Noblesville and Fishers, has launched its third annual Hear for the Holidays campaign.

Through Dec. 31, people can nominate themselves or someone they know for the chance to receive a free pair of hearing aids provided by the Beltone Hearing Care Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to removing barriers to hearing care.

Over the past 10 years, the foundation has given away more than 8,300 hearing aids at no cost to recipients. During last year’s Hear for the Holidays campaign, the foundation donated more than 1,250 hearing aids.

“The season brings so many opportunities for connection, and hearing loss can make them harder to enjoy,” stated Attilio Ciochetto, Beltone hearing aid specialist. “When hearing improves,

every small interaction starts to feel a little brighter and more meaningful, and this program helps make that happen.”

According to the announcement, the ability to have clear hearing during the holidays offers improved connections, holistic health benefits, emotional wellness and safety and awareness.
