Former Conseco executive Rollie Dick remembered for generosity, volunteering

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com Longtime Zionsville resident, businessman and civic leader Rollie Dick, 94, died Jan. 3, according to close family friend Brian Kelly. The former Conseco executive, Central Indiana Business Hall of Fame inductee, arts supporter and nonprofit volunteer is survived by his wife, Cheri, and many other family members.

Dick, who resided in Zionsville since the early 1970s, was originally from Sanborn, Iowa, and earned an associate degree from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1950.

He started his career as a Certified Public Accountant, becoming an executive with Conesco, a financial services company now called CNO Financial Group; and later was a consultant at MH Equity Investors. He also previously partnered with Donald Trump on the 1998 purchase of the General Motors Building in New York City, which they sold in 2003.

Dick told Current in a 2013 interview that he grew up “dirt poor,” which taught him the value of giving his time.

In his 20s, he volunteered with a community theater organization and said the experience started him on the path to becoming a regular supporter of the performing arts, as well as supporting educational opportunities for disadvantaged communities. He was a founding board chair of the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel “You should become involved with organizations you have a passion for,” Dick said in that interview, “There are very few organizations that I write a check to where I don’t have some involvement. It’s not just the joy in writing the check but seeing the good that’s done with it.”

In 2021, Dick was honored at the Payne & Mencias Palladium at Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel for his support of a renovation project there. His portrait hangs in the Palladium’s Founders Club hospitality space. Cheri Dick is the former executive director of the Allied Solutions Center’s Civic Theater.

Dick also was a member of the Great American Songbook Foundation’s Board of Directors, serving in various leadership roles. He was unanimously elected by both boards to serve as a Legacy Member.

“Neither of our organizations would be where we are today if not for the wisdom, guidance and generous support of Rollie Dick,” McDermott stated. “He was a wonderful colleague and friend who lived a long and remarkable life.

He will be greatly missed.”

Former Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard worked closely with Dick on bringing the Center to Carmel. Brainard said he wanted an anchor for downtown Carmel that focused on the arts, and Dick was a key player in making that project a reality.

“Rollie stepped up and joined the board and became chair of the board and really built the board into an organization that could manage what today

is almost a $400 million asset,” Brainard said. “Rollie was absolutely critical to the success of the Center for the Performing Arts. Our city is better today because Rollie chose to invest his time, energy and heart here, and understood the community as something you build one thoughtful decision at a time.”

While a Zionsville resident, Dick had strong business, civic and personal ties with Carmel. Brainard said Dick “showed us that leadership doesn’t always require a spotlight — just integrity, persistence and care for the common good.”

In addition to other honors, in 2017, Rollie and Cheri Dick were recognized as Benefactors of the Year for Central Indiana by the Ivy Tech Foundation after they funded half of the expansion project for the school’s Associate Accelerated Program, which helps students earn an associate degree in a shorter time frame.

Comprehensive plan tabled until next month

By Spencer Durham spencer@youarecurrent.com A vote on the Town of Zionsville’s comprehensive plan won’t take place until at least February.

The Zionsville Town Council voted Jan. 5 to spend this month further examining the plan that would serve as a roadmap for future town developments.

“This is a pretty big bite to take,” Council President Jason Plunkett said.

“I wanted us to have an opportunity to review everything in advance of the next meeting.”

The all-encompassing document covers land use — i.e., what type of developments can go where — along with road improvements and economic development.

There are some concerns regarding land use of the more rural areas of Zionsville, particularly on the west side of town.

The Perry Township area west of I-65 is designated for employment use, like manufacturing and professional offices.

Boone County Commissioner Scott Pell said it runs counter to the desires of residents near Fayette, who prefer to stay rural. Pell raised the issue at last month’s Zionsville Plan Commission meeting.

Councilor Tim McElderry said there are a couple items to review before a vote.

“There were literally opportunities to address at the planning commission level and they didn’t get to it,” he said, adding there were some distractions at last

month’s planning commission meeting.

Diversifying the town’s revenue streams is a focus running through much of the comprehensive plan.

Zionsville is mostly funded via income and property taxes. However, recent state legislation will suppress how much taxing units can collect in property taxes which are used by municipalities to fund infrastructure projects.

This has caused widespread concern among communities across the state as they grapple with less income.

Zionsville’s plan said attracting more businesses will be instrumental in sustaining “high quality of services.”

500 Festival theme: ‘Racing Through History’

By Mark Ambrogi mark@youarecurrent.com “Racing Through History” seemed to be the perfect 500 Festival theme for 2026 as two milestone events are set.

This will be the 50th running of the IU Health 500 Festival Mini-Marathon May 2 and the 70th 500 Festival Parade May 23. The Indianapolis 500 is May 24.

“We want to honor the legacy that’s behind our milestone events and celebrate the traditions that have gone into both of those as well as the community that’s participated,” said Lindsay Labas, senior vice president of marketing and communications for the 500 Festival.

The theme was announced Jan. 6.

“We’ll start to tie that into all of the promotions that we do related to all of our programs and events that take place during the month of May,” Labas

said.

The 500 Festival Parade float will feature graphics that depict the theme.

“The float always changes what it looks like based on the theme for the year,” Labas said.

The theme also celebrates initiatives like the Princess Program, Education Program and KidsFit Program.

Labas said the 500 Festival’s story is built on decades of community, collaboration and shared experiences.

“As we celebrate how far we’ve come and those who paved the way, we invite the community to be part of this historic year by participating in our events, creating new memories and continuing the story of the 500 Festival together,” Labas stated.

By Jessica Todd jessica@youarecurrent.com Grit & Grace Nation, a nationwide nonprofit that equips girls ages 8 to 18 with leadership skills, is continuing to grow its Indiana chapter through skills-building, mentorships and community service.

The Indiana chapter meets monthly at different locations on the north side of Indianapolis. Chapter members, led

by Westfield resident Melissa Asbury, recently made fleece blankets for Noblesville Fire Station 73 to give to children in emergencies.

“In December, we had about 18 or 19 girls make blankets for kiddos and babies and donate them for little ones that get their pajamas cut off due to an emergency,” Asbury said. “We wanted to give them something to give them hope and warmth in those moments.”

The Indiana chapter also recently supported the Shepherd Community Center in downtown Indianapolis by assembling hygiene kits with essentials like soap, toothbrushes and tampons.

Each group meeting offers different learning or service opportunities. “(This month) we are partnering with (Pence Media Group founder) Nicole Pence, and she is doing a branding session for the girls,” Asbury said. “In February, we’ll be partnering with Kayla Sullivan, who is a previous Fox 59 reporter, and helping the girls project their voice.”

Grit & Grace Nation, founded by Emmy-winning journalist and former Fox 59 news anchor Fanchon Stinger, has 16 chapters across the nation. The Indiana chapter has members from Hamilton, Hendricks, Boone and surrounding counties.

Noblesville resident Jayna Wallace, 15, has been involved with the Indiana chapter for four years.

“Initially, I thought it would be a nice thing to do because of the opportunities presented — like meeting a ton of different people and getting to experience a lot of things,” Wallace said. “But it’s also just a really great environment with people who genuinely care about what you have to say and don’t shut down ideas. That’s a rare thing for an organization that deals with kids.”

participate.

“If you want an environment where you feel like you’re going to be heard no matter what you say, and you want a lot of great opportunities to express yourself, no matter what your interests are, I’d say it’s a great environment for young girls,” Wallace said.

Girls who participate also have a chance to win scholarships — $10,000 for middle school students and $25,000 for high school students.

Girls can also join an online leadership academy led by Stinger and leadership trainer Stacy James when the turn 12.

“They hold Zoom calls on Monday nights for approximately an hour and a half with the girls, and that is all straight leadership,” Asbury said. “They go a lot deeper with the girls in terms of lessons, application and getting to know the girls, so that way they can help further mentor them individually.

My daughter is involved in that, and I’ve seen a huge change and confidence boost in her.”

Asbury, who has led the Indiana chapter for two years, said she plans to continue teaching girls about being courageous and navigating hardship.

“Girls are going to go through a situation that’s going to test their character, and that’s the point they have to demonstrate grit and grace,” She said. “That’s what we try to teach at every single one of the lessons. A lot of times, the girls get so comfortable they start opening up about things, and it becomes a thing where other girls are pouring into the girl that’s going through a struggle. Over time, the girls start to develop a sisterhood.”

Zionsville wastewater plant meets town’s capacity

A website for the “Starkey Neighbor-

hood Action Group” raises concerns about the treatment facility’s ability to handle Zionsville’s waste as the town grows. The website, which doesn’t provide contact or group information other than a single email address, calls for the community to contract out its wastewater treatment to TriCo Regional Sewer Utility, which has facilities in Hamilton and Boone counties.

tails about the treatment plant, noting in a memo to Current that the facility — built in 1985 — was expanded in 2003 to treat up to 2 million gallons of wastewater daily, double the original facility’s capacity.

“Today, it treats an average of about 1.15 million gallons per day, meaning it is operating at roughly half of its designed capacity under normal conditions,” the memo stated. “Independent engineering reviews completed in 2021 and 2023 confirmed that the plant is functioning within its intended limits and is not currently strained or at risk of being overloaded.”

The memo noted previous studies included a potential need for future expansion or regional partnerships, but measured wastewater flows into the plant have remained below projections despite the town’s growth.

“That’s partly because not all parts of Zionsville are connected to the town’s system; some areas are served by other utilities or by septic systems,” the memo stated. “The town uses real-world data, not just projections, to guide planning decisions.”

One of the concerns noted by the Starkey Neighborhood Action Group website is a recent 28 percent increase to wastewater rates. The increase was the first rate hike since 2010. According to a 2024 rate study presented to the Zionsville Town Council, it was needed to help with increasing operation costs, and to fund upgrades and replace outdated equipment.

In a 2024 memo to the council regarding the rate increase, Public Works Director Lance Lantz stated, although it wasn’t needed immediately, increasing the plant’s capacity is a likely future project.

“Recent studies have determined that the plant will ultimately need to increase its dry weather capacity from 2 million gallons per day to 2.5 MGD, and its wet weather capacity from 4 MGD to

7 MGD to accommodate the increasing demands within our service territory,” Lantz wrote. “The current capital plans call for achieving these capacities over the next 10 years.”

In 2022, prior to the rate study and subsequent rate increase, Lantz detailed the facility’s capacity to the council. In a recording of that meeting available on the town’s YouTube page, he said during dry weather, the plant had plenty of capacity, reaching just over half of its 2-million-gallon daily limit. However, during heavy rain events, the flow gets closer to 80 percent.

Lantz didn’t sound the alarm at that meeting but noted the city should plan to expand the plant’s capacity at some point to accommodate future growth as well as existing homes that need to switch from septic to the city’s wastewater system.

“Septic systems are not the best and we want to always make sure we make provisions to provide alternatives for people to septic,” he said. “(And) particularly focus on eliminating the older septic systems.”

According to the memo from town officials, the planned upgrades should improve the plant’s ability to handle flow during wet weather, even without increasing capacity.

“The town is currently investing in upgrades that improve reliability, safety and performance, especially during heavy rain events, such as improving how grit and debris are removed before wastewater enters the treatment process,” the memo stated. “A future capacity increase is part of longer-term planning, but it is not an immediate necessity based on current trends.”

The Starkey Neighborhood Action Group website alleges potential environmental harm from the waste treatment facility and concerns about overflow in case of flood events. Town officials state in the memo to Current key facilities are elevated to protect against flooding; treatment ponds contain treated, disinfected water and are designed to handle extreme weather; biosolid handling follows all state regulations; and the plant is inspected by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

There was no response to an email from Current to the Starkey Neighborhood Action Group requesting information about the organization.

Construction is ongoing at Crossbridge Point in Zionsville on a series of homes for adults with disabilities.

Through a partnership with ILADD — Independent Living for Adults with Developmental/Intellectual Disabilities — Old Town Companies is constructing 17 homes and an activity center designed to support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to help them pursue independent lives.

Founded in 2019, ILADD helps adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities access housing, enrichment opportunities and social programs that promote independence and belonging.

The 17 homes at Crossbridge Point fit that mission and are designed with front porches, accessible floor plans and walkable connections.

“The goal isn’t just to provide housing, but to support day-to-day life, routines and relationships,” a news release from Old Town Companies stated.

“Lots are being developed into 1,000to 1,600-square-foot homes, plus a 3,000-square-foot clubhouse for ILADD programming. In partnership with the city, additional builders, vendors and the Johnson Family, Old Town has committed an equivalent value of $2 million in resources toward completing

this project.”

According to the news release, Crossbridge Point is a reminder meaningful inclusion starts with thoughtful partnerships.

“When local nonprofits, municipalities and businesses work together, they can create places where every person has the opportunity to live as independently as possible and still feel deeply connected to their neighbors,” the news release stated.

The community celebrated the groundbreaking of Crossbridge Point in December.

“Breaking ground at Crossbridge Point isn’t just the start of construction — it’s the start of a vision becoming reality,” ILADD Executive Director Andy Kirby stated during the ceremony. “This project represents growth, opportunity and a future we’re proud to help shape.”

He emphasized the need for housing options that blend independence with connection, safety and belonging “We want to create communities that flourish, and flourishing communities are diverse,” stated Rebecca McGuckin, chief culture officer at Old Town Companies.

A YEAR OF DEVELOPMENT Zionsville Redevelopment Commission recaps progress made in 2025

By Leila Kheiry leila@youarecurrent.com During the past year, the Zionsville Redevelopment Commission closed on four properties and anticipates closing a fifth in the Creekside Corporate Park commercial development area, negotiated a development package for 420 Main St. — a vacant lot formerly the site of a Citgo — and completed the first phase of the community’s hotel market analysis.

Deputy Mayor Justin Hage recently presented a summary of the commission’s accomplishments to the Zionsville City Council, noting construction is ongoing on one of the Creekside projects — Frooz Vision LLC’s new multitenant medical office building.

“Frooz Vision is going to be an ophthalmology and … eye surgery center,” Hage said. “Construction is well underway and I think that is in the framing process. I think we’ll see the opening of that in 2026.”

The project is on 5.68 acres of Creekside Corporate Park, 106th Street off Zionsville Road. The property is a “conservation” office park for corporate headquarters and office buildings, according to the town’s website. About 38 percent of the property is preserved as woodlands, with 42 acres designated for low impact development.

Other new developments at Creekside include: Crider & Crider office headquarters on 2.49 acres. The site is being cleared and graded for construction.

A new headquarters for Exclusive Autosports, a professional racing team in Indianapolis that operates teams in the USF Pro Championships. The 3.35-acre site was two lots and has been replatted to combine them into one developable lot.

Intelligent Living Solutions, a multitenant building on 2.09 acres. Developers broke ground on the project in December.

Jaffe Realty’s planned multitenant medical and general office building, a 20,000-square-foot, two-story building. The commission expects to close the sale of the lot in 2026.

the town and a PUD for the park was first approved in 2015. The property includes a nature trail that connects to the Village. Since 2015, other lots within Creekside were purchased and developed by Group 1001, DK Pierce, Graham Rahal Performance, Rahal Letterman Lanigan and Ducati.

In addition to its Creekside development plans, Jaffe Realty also is working with the commission on plans for the former Citgo lot downtown.

The mixed-use project is planned on a 2.4-acre lot at 420 S. Main St. on the southwest corner of Main and Sycamore streets. Plans for the two-story building call for a fine-dining restaurant space on the first level, along with office space and an outdoor patio.

The commission approved a Letter

of Intent to move forward with the proposed development. Depending on the progress of planned road and utility work, it could be built sometime in 2027.

In his presentation, Hage highlighted the town’s hotel study, conducted by consultant Hunden Partners.

“I think this is an exciting opportunity for developers and landowners to think about options for hotels in our town,” Hage told the council. “This really gave an overview of, essentially, the market drivers of demand, what the existing supply is, and gave some general recommendations related to options. The … recommendations were an upscale boutique hotel in the range of about 80 to 120 rooms. And, I think one really important part that also

came from that — and I think we all probably know this — is there’s a lack of meeting space here in the Town of Zionsville.”

The study highlighted the town’s growth over the last 10 years and its expected continued growth, along with commercial demand linked to the Indianapolis Executive Airport, local events, sports tourism and proximity to major business corridors.

Consultants provided three options for officials to consider. The first is an 80-room hotel with about 7,000 square feet of function space — ballroom and meeting space combined. The second calls for 100 rooms and 8,500 square feet of function space; and the third calls for 120 rooms and 10,000 square feet of function space.

Zionsville currently has one hotel — the eight-room Brick Street Inn in the Village.

The next phase involves working with developers to identify potential hotel projects.

Teresa Reynolds and the Slicktones set for Local Mix Music Series

“My dad was always spinning his deep collection of jazz records, but MTV was also taking over the mainstream and exposing me to all kinds of genres and artists,” she said. “My eclectic taste definitely shows up in my music, which I describe as a blend of ‘90s pop R&B, with jazz, soul and disco.”

Reynolds will bring her unique brand of music to The Tarkington in the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel. Reynolds and the Slicktones, who are making their Allied Solutions Center debut, will participate in the Local Mix Music Series at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22.

“We play mostly in Indianapolis, so I think this is a great chance to play for some folks that maybe haven’t gotten to see us yet,” she said. “There’s something for everyone with the Slicktones, so Carmel audiences are in for a treat.”

Reynolds formed the Slicktones in 2021.

“We’re like a family at this point,” she said. “When I formed this group, I knew that Mina Keohane, my pianist, and Poncho Hedrick, my bassist, had to be part of it. I’d been fans and friends of theirs for a while, then we added Matthew Dupree on drums and vocals and Joshua Ginder on guitar, and I knew we had stumbled onto something really special. For our upcoming show at The Tarkington, we’ll have some special guests joining us, with Fred Miller on guitar, Melissa Gallant on harp, D’yshe Mansfield singing background vocals and Shannon Kaminski tap dancing.”

The group has performed in venues such as The Mousetrap and Jazz Kitchen and played at festivals and parks concert series.

School in 1999. After graduating from Ball State University, she moved to New York City to pursue theater.

“I had just gotten a degree in acting from BSU, so when I arrived in the city, I hit the ground running,” she said. “I was cast in a show, ‘Platanos and Collard Greens,’ which was featured in the New York Times and became the longest-running off-Broadway show starring a minority cast.

Later, I wrote, produced and directed theater and sketch comedy, but then music fell into my lap.”

During her 14 years in NYC, she performed regularly with David Ippolito, known as That Guitar Man, who played weekly concerts in Central Park.

“The New York Times called him the most famous person you’ve never heard of,” Reynolds said. “He could be playing for a few hundred people to a 1,000. I started singing with him in

2009 and performed with him until I left.”

Reynolds also traveled and sang backing vocals for Gloria Gaynor for four years starting in 2014.

“Performing with Gloria Gaynor was incredible,” Reynolds said. “One of my first gigs with her was in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in front of 10,000 people, and I was pinching myself the whole time. Sharing the stage with her, Chaka Khan and Nile Rodgers on New Year’s Eve in Dubai was one of the greatest thrills of my life.”

Reynolds returned to Indianapolis in 2018.

“After being in Indianapolis for several years, I’ve finally gotten back into theater again with the Indianapolis Black Theatre Co. and just wrote a solo musical, ‘Facing It Face to Face with Dollface,’ which will be performed as part of the Black Solo Festival at the end of the month at the District Theatre in Indianapolis,” she said.

Reynolds writes original songs for her band. Her brother, TJ Reynolds, helps with production.

“The Slicktones take the live instrumentation, and we make it our own,” she said. “It’s a real team effort.”

Reynolds started a small business, Teresa Reynolds Arts & Events, to help boost opportunities for other local artists.

“The first big event I did was the For the Culture Fest in 2022,” she said. “It was a free daylong festival celebrating the diversity of music, arts and culture in Indy’s Black community. I’m always looking for chances to collaborate with and uplift the creators I’m surrounded by here in town. One project I’m currently working on is the development of the Crooked Creek Cultural Campus, a brand-new theater, arts and cultural space on the west side of Indianapolis.”
